I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AS I WAS RIGHT UP THE STREET FROM THEM. THEY SCANNED FOR THE SERVICE CODE AND IT TOLD THEM THERE WAS A MIS-FIRE IN THE #6 CYLINDER. THEY CHECKED THE SPARK PLUG COIL AND SAID IT WAS FAULTY AND REPLACED IT. WHEN I PICKED UP THE TRUCK FROM THE DEALER THE CHECK ENGINE WAS STILL ON. THEY TOOK IT BACK INTO THE SERVICE BAY AND AFTER 20 MINUTES CALLED ME OVER TO TELL ME THERE WAS COOLANT LEAKING INTO THE #6 CYLINDER AND WAS DETERMINED THAT THE ENGINE BLOCK WAS CRACKED. THIS TRUCK HAS NEVER OVER-HEATED AND THEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN IT. AFTER CHECKING THE INTERNET FOR OTHERS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM, I FOUND THERE WERE A FEW OTHERS AND THE MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT HE HAS SEEN IT BEFORE IN THIS ENGINE BLOCK. I CAN'T AFFORD A NEW TRUCK, SO I AM STUCK WITH PAYING FOR NOT ONLY THE COIL REPLACEMENT BUT ALSO THE NEW OR REFURBISHED ENGINE BLOCK ($5,000+). IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE NHTSA COULD LOOK INTO THE INTEGRITY AND ENGINEERING OF THE ENGINE BLOCK IN THE 2005 4.0L V6 ENGINE IN THE TOYOTA TACOMA. *TR
HI, I HAVE AN OPEN FILE WITH THE TOYOTA CORPORATION AT 1-800-331-4331, MY NAME IS [XXX] AND I LIVE IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA. CASE # [XXX]. IN SEPT. OF 2012 MY TRUCK WAS AT 61,000 MILES AND I TOOK MY VEHICLE IN FOR MAINTENANCE AND THEY CHECKED A RECALL ON THE SPIRAL CABLE AND TOLD ME THAT MY TRUCK DIDN'T QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL BECAUSE OF THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE PART. I DIDN'T MIND I WASN'T HAVING ANY PROBLEMS. HOWEVER, AT 65,000 MILES IT IS NOW NOT WORKING PROPERLY AND THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME TO FIX IT. I'VE TRIED TO REASON WITH THEM AND POINT OUT THAT ITS OBVIOUS THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WHEN A TRUCK WITH 65,000 MILE, GARAGED YEAR AROUND AND NEVER IN AN ACCIDENT WOULD BE HAVING PROBLEMS. I HONESTLY THOUGHT SAFETY SYSTEMS HAD LIFE TIME WARRANTIES. I AM EXTREMELY CONCERNED THAT THEY ARE WORKING VERY HARD TO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO FIX THE PART AND HOPE YOU CAN HELP ME WITH THIS FORMAL COMPLAINT AGAINST THE TOYOTA CORPORATION AND THE KENDALL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP LOCATED IN FAIRBANKS, ALASKA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 14V604000 (SUSPENSION) AND 13V337000 (SEAT BELT) HOWEVER, THE PART TO DO THE REPAIRS WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS BEING INSPECTED, IT WAS FOUND THAT THE FRAME WAS PERFORATED DUE TO RUST. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 138,000.
LIKE MANY OTHER TOYOTA TACOMA OWNERS, MY AIRBAG DASHBOARD LIGHT INTERMITTENTLY ILLUMINATED LAST YEAR. AFTER RESEARCHING IT, TOYOTA HAD ISSUED A PRESS RELEASE ACKNOWLEDGING A PROBLEM WITH THE "SPIRAL CABLE" AND INDICATED THEY WERE GATHERING THE PARTS AND WOULD SEND LETTERS TO OWNERS. I NEVER RECEIVED A LETTER AND AFTER INQUIRING, MY VIN WAS EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. AFTER RESEARCHING A BIT MORE, IT APPEARS MANY TACOMA OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE AND WERE EXCLUDED FROM THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. THE AIRBAG DASHBOARD LIGHT NOW ILLUMINATES CONTINUOUSLY. THE DEALERSHIP SAID IT WOULD BE $106 TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM (WE ALL KNOW IT'S A SPIRAL CABLE ISSUE) AND FROM ALL ACCOUNTS, THE SPIRAL CABLE REPLACEMENT COST IS NORTH OF $500 (EVEN THOUGH TOYOTA'S PRESS RELEASE INDICATED IT IS A 30 MINUTE FIX). BY THE WAY, THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE AIRBAG WOULD NOT DEPLOY IN THE EVENT OF A FRONTAL CRASH AS LONG AS THE AIRBAG DASHBOARD LIGHT IS ILLUMINATED. THE COST OF REPAIR IS OUT OF RANGE FOR MOST AND IT WAS OBVIOUS THE DEALERSHIP HAD LITTLE CONCERN FOR THE SAFETY OF THE OCCUPANTS. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND THE NHTSA IS FAILING TO ANALYZE THE DATA AND MAKE A COMPELLING CASE TO TOYOTA TO EXPAND THE AFFECTED RANGE OF VINS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL CAMPAIGN. IT IS YET ANOTHER BLACK EYE FOR TOYOTA FOR DEMONSTRATING A LACK OF CONCERN FOR A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE THAT COULD END UP SERIOUSLY INJURING OR KILLING A VEHICLE OCCUPANT, UNNECESSARILY. GIVEN THE RECENT PUBLICITY OF THE FINE LEVIED AGAINST TOYOTA AND THE GRILLING GM IS NOW TAKING, YOU WOULD EXPECT THE AUTOMAKERS TO STEP UP THEIR GAME. MY OBSERVATION IS THAT THEY SIMPLY DON'T CARE. IF NHTSA IS NOT FORCING THEIR HANDS ON SAFETY ISSUES, IT'S OBVIOUS CAR MANUFACTURERS NO LONGER HAVE INCENTIVE TO DO THE RIGHT THING. NHTSA, WE'RE COUNTING ON YOU TO ANALYZE THIS DATA FOR SAFETY SAKE. *TR
TOOK VEHICLE IN FOR INSPECTION, NOTIFIED THAT THE FRAME HAS EXCESSIVE CORROSION (RUST) ON THE ENTIRE FRAME WITH SIGNS OF METAL SEPARATION. A CRACK WAS ALSO NOTED ON THE PASSENGER SIDE WHERE THE FRONT AND BACK PARTS OF THE C-FRAME ARE WELDED TOGETHER. WHEN THE SURFACE RUST WAS GROUND AWAY, THE CRACK WAS 5" LONG AND THE BOTTOM OF THE C-FRAME HAD TWO LARGE PERFORATIONS. WITH THIS CONDITION, THE VEHICLE WILL NOT PASS THE INSPECTION. THE DEALER CONTACTED REGIONAL REP AND OWNER CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE - BOTH ADVISED NO ASSISTANCE AND THE FRAMES WERE OF A DIFFERENT PRODUCTION LOT THEN THE PRIOR RECALL (2ND GEN VS 1ST GEN). ALSO CITED AGE AND MILEAGE BEING A FACTOR. OTHER THAN THE FRAME, THE VEHICLE IS IN VERY GOOD CONDITION. 2005 TACOMA WITH 131000 MILES SHOULD STILL BE A PASSABLE VEHICLE. *TR
WENT TO GET VEHICLE INSPECTION,DEALER SAID FRAME HAS ROTTED TO A UNSAFE DEGREE AND WILL NOT INSPECT. I CANT USE MY $30,000 TRUCK FOR WORK BECAUSE OF A KNOWN TOYOTA FRAME RUSTING ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A SLIGHT CRASH. THE CONTACT WAS NOT INJURED AND A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DEEMED AS DESTROYED BECAUSE THE FRAME WAS COMPLETELY RUSTED AND THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE COULD BE REPAIRED, IT WOULD NOT PASS A STATE INSPECTION. THE CONTACT SPOKE WITH THE MANUFACTURER BUT NO ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 54,000.
BACK IN JULY OF 2012 I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK FROM MORITZ CHEVROLET USED CARS IN FT. WORTH, TEXAS. I WAS UNAWARE OF THE FRAME RUSTING AT THE TIME. RUST ON A FRAME IS NOT USUALLY AN ISSUE TO EVEN HAVE TO CONSIDER WHILE BUYING A VEHICLE THAT NEW IN TEXAS. I MOVED TO WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA IN JUNE AND ON MY TRIP UP I NOTICED THE TRUCK WAS VIBRATING/SHIMMING. I TOOK MY TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE TO BARREL TOYOTA IN CRANBERRY, PA TO CHECK IT OUT. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN NOTICED IT THEN AND TOOK SOME PICTURES OF THE RUSTED AREAS. I MADE MY FIRST CALL TO TOYOTA AT THIS TIME. NOT MORE THAN A MONTH LATER I HAD TO HAVE A BARRING REPLACED AT GUYS SERVICE STATION, KNOB HILL, PA. WHILE UP ON THE LIFT I WAS ACTUALLY ABLE TO SEE THE RUST DAMAGE FOR MYSELF.I DID CALL MORITZ CHEVROLET AND SPOKE TO THE SALES REP., [XXX], SHE ADVISED ME TO TRADE THE TRUCK IN. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA GLOBAL I WAS TOLD THAT, ALTHOUGH THEY HAD RECALLED TACOMAS UP TO 2004, THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO FOR ME. ALL THAT THEY COULD DO WAS ASSIGN ME A CASE NUMBER. I RETURNED TO BARREL TOYOTA TO SEE IF THEY COULD OFFER ANY HELP OR MAYBE A TRADE IN FOR ANOTHER VEHICLE. THEY REFUSED. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THERE THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH TOYOTA TRUCKS AND WHILE HE COULD DO NOTHING FOR ME, HE COULD RECOMMEND SOMEONE TO WELD IT. HE ALSO INFORMED ME AT THIS TIME THAT I MAY NOT BE ABLE TO GET MY TRUCK INSPECTED AFTER A WINTER HERE IN PENNSYLVANIA. NOW I'M NOT THE SMARTEST PERSON BUT EVEN I KNOW THAT THE FRAMES OF VEHICLES ARE DESIGNED TO COLLAPSE A CERTAIN WAY IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT AND IF YOU WELD IT, IT WOULD COMPROMISE THE INTEGRITY OF THE DESIGN. AFTER MY FRUITLESS RETURN TRIP BACK TO BARREL TOYOTA I SENT AN LETTER TO TOYOTA. STILL NO RESPONSE TO THIS DAY ! AS I WAS LEAVING WORK I SLOWLY DROVE OVER A SPEED BUMP. THE REAR END OF MY TRUCK BEGAN TO BOUNCE LIKE A BOAT IN CHOPPY WATER. I GOT OUT AND LOOKED TO SEE IF I HAD A LOW TIRE. ALL FOUR TIRES WERE FINE SO I KEPT LOOKING. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION TO THE LEFT REAR WHEEL WELL, I NOTICED THAT THE SHOCK ROD HAD BROKEN OFF AT THE THEADED END AND SHOT STRAIGHT THROUGH THE BED OF MY TRUCK. I IMMEDIATELY TOOK THE TRUCK TO GLENN TOYOTA FOR INSPECTION. INITIALLY THEY TOOK GREAT INTEREST UNTIL AFTER THEY LEARNED THAT TOYOTA MANUFACTURING WOULD NOT COVER THE CATASTROPHIC FAILURE. NOW THE TRUCK RIDES LIKE A BOAT IN CHOPPY WATER AND EVEN THE SLIGHTEST BUMP IN THE ROAD CAUSES AN EXAGGERATED RESPONSE IN THE SUSPENSION MAKING IT DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THERE IS NO PREVIOUS HISTORY OF DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE NOR HAS IT BEEN MISTREATED. *TR
BOUGHT A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA, AFTER HAVING A LOOK UNDER THE TRUCK I NOTICED SOME RUST ON THE FRAME, AS I LOOKED CLOSER I FOUND THAT THE RUST WAS SO BAD IT WAS CAUSING THE FRAME TO TWIST, I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA AND IN THE FIRST 2 EMAILS THEY SAID THEY WILL DO NOTHING SO I ASKED TO SPEAK TO SOMEONE HIGHER UP TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE THERE IS NO RECALL YET AND I DO NOT KNOW WHY. OTHER PEOPLE I KNOW WITH SAME ISSUE SAME YEAR AND MODEL TRUCK AS MINE HAVE HAD THERE FRAMES REPLACED BY TOYOTA. THE FRAME ON A TRUCK THAT IS 9 YEARS OLD SHOULD NOT BE RUSTED OUT! HOW LONG TILL THAT MAKE A RECALL? AFTER SOME ONE IS HURT BAD OR DIES? *TR

THE CONTACT NOTICED A BRACKET ON HIS DRIVEWAY AND TOOK IT TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED HOWEVER, THE MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE SUBFRAME WAS CORRODED, THE STEERING LINKAGE AND THE INTEGRITY OF THE WHEEL MOUNT WERE AFFECTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130.000.
IN JUNE 2013 I WAS APPROACHING AN INTERSTATE ENTRANCE RAMP. AS I SLOWED DOWN (FOOT ON THE BRAKE) TO MAKE THE RIGHT TURN ONTO THE RAMP, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED, CAUSING THE REAR END TO "FISH TAIL" AROUND, JUMPING THE CURB ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RAMP AND SENDING THE VEHICLE DOWN THE EMBANKMENT. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP BEFORE HITTING THE FENCE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL. SINCE THIS FIRST INCIDENT IN JUNE 2013, THE VEHICLE HAS HAD THREE MORE INCIDENTS IN JUNE, JULY AND AUGUST OF 2014. THE LAST INCIDENT IN AUGUST OCCURRED AS I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT. AGAIN, I WAS SLOWING DOWN (FOOT ON THE BRAKE) WHEN THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED CAUSING ME TO STRIKE THE PARKED VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME. THE INCIDENTS IN JUNE AND JULY 2014 WERE ALSO SIMILAR PARKING LOT INCIDENTS WITH NO OTHER VEHICLES AROUND. AFTER THE AUGUST 2014 INCIDENT, I STARTED TO "CONNECT THE DOTS" AND TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. HOWEVER, THEY FOUND NO PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. I FIND THIS VERY STRANGE GIVEN ALL OF THE KNOWN ISSUES TOYOTA HAS HAD WITH SUDDEN UNINTENDED ACCELERATION (SUA). *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED A LOUD GRINDING NOISE. UPON INSPECTION, THE FRAME THAT HELD THE ENGINE WAS FOUND TO BE CRACKED. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE ENGINE COULD FALL OUT FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,000.
ON MAY 27, 2013 MY WIFE [XXX] AND I WERE TOWING MY BASS BOAT AND I BLEW OUT THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE AND WAS ABLE TO SAFELY GET IT OFF OF THE ROAD TO CHANGE THE TIRE. IN THE PROCESS OF CHANGING THE TIRE IN MY TRUCK, THE FRAME BENT UNDER THE PRESSURE OF THE JACK AND THE TRUCK, CAME OFF OF THE JACK, LUCKILY I HAD THE TIRE PARTIALLY ON THAT THE LUG BOLTS CAUGHT THE TRUCK. THIS RUSTING AND UNSAFE FRAME ISSUE DATES BACK TO 1/16/13 AT APPROXIMATELY 7:30 AM I WAS CONTACTED BY THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT DURING A REPAIR TO MY CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEY NOTICED THAT I HAD A HOLE IN MY FRAME AND THAT IT WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. I FEEL TERRIBLE NOW, BUT I ALL BUT CALLED THE GIRL SERVICE MANAGER A LIAR AND ASKED THAT SHE TAKE ME A PHOTO OF THE HOLE AND SEND IT TO ME AT WORK. I WANT MY TACOMA FIXED, THE FRAME REPLACED AS I FEEL IT IS UNSAFE AND AFTER HAVING EXPERIENCED THE TRUCK FALLING OFF OF THE JACK AFTER THE FRAME BENT WHILE SIMPLY JACKING IT UP, I CAN'T IMAGINE THAT I AM THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE WITH THIS ISSUE. IN MY RESEARCH I AM FINDING VOLUMES OF COMPLAINTS TO TOYOTA IN KIND REGARDING FRAME ROT AND RUST. I HAVE ALSO NOTICED SOME INSTABILITY WHEN DRIVING, IT SEEMS TO HAVE A CONSTANT SHAKE IN THE STEERING. I HAVE PLACED NUMEROUS CALLS TO TOYOTA'S CUSTOMER SERVICE EXPLAINING IN DETAIL MY SAFETY CONCERN AND THE ANSWER I AM CONSTANTLY BEING GIVEN IS THAT MY VEHICLE IS NOT CURRENTLY PART OF THE RECALL PROGRAM. ANY WAY YOU SLICE IT, I FEEL THIS IS TERRIBLE ON TOYOTA'S BEHALF TO SUBJECT LOYAL CUSTOMERS TO SUCH POTENTIAL AND EMINENT SAFETY HAZARDS AS A WEEK AND INFERIOR FRAME! GOD HELP US IF WE ARE EVER INVOLVED IN AN AUTO ACCIDENT... HOW WELL WILL THESE FRAMES HOLD UP OR WILL WE BE CRUSHED LIKE A SODA CAN? SO MUCH FOR TOYOTA'S SAFETY RATING AT THAT POINT RIGHT? THE TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WHERE I PURCHASED MY NEW 2005 TACOMA 7 YRS AGO, INFORMED ME MY TRUCK WILL NOT PASS STATE INSPECTION DUE TO HOLES RUSTED THROUGH THE FRAME. THE LARGEST OF THE HOLES WAS LOCATED UNDER THE DRIVER'S SIDE ON THE INSIDE OF THE MAIN BOX FRAME COMPONENT. THERE ARE SIMILAR HOLES ALONG OTHER BOX STYLE FRAME PARTS. THESE RUST HOLES ORIGINATED FROM THE INSIDE OF THE BOX FRAME AND NOT FROM WHERE ANY RUST PREVENTATIVE COULD BE APPLIED BY THE OWNER. ANY POST PRODUCTION APPLICATION OF UNDERCOATING OR UNDERBODY OIL BY THE OWNER TO THE INTERIOR OF THESE BOXED AREAS IS NOT POSSIBLE SINCE THEY ARE INACCESSIBLE. THE DEALERSHIP INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO WITHOUT TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS APPROVAL. I CALLED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER RELATIONS LINE AT 1-800-331-4331 AND AFTER A LONG CONVERSATION WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE I WAS TOLD THAT MY TRUCK MODEL WAS NOT COVERED BY EITHER A VEHICLE WARRANTY OR A REMEDIAL ACTION BY TOYOTA. RESEARCHING THIS ISSUE ON THE INTERNET REVEALS THAT TOYOTA TACOMA MODELS HAVE HAD FRAME RUSTING PROBLEMS CONSISTENTLY SINCE THE MID 90'S. MY OPTIONS FROM TOYOTA, ALL AT MY OWN EXPENSE, ARE TO: 1. FIND A FRAME SHOP THAT CAN PATCH THESE HOLES BUT MOST LIKELY THE PATCH WILL ONLY LAST A YEAR. 2. HAVE THE FRAME REPLACED WHICH THE DEALERSHIP ROUGHLY ESTIMATED IT TO BE CLOSE TO $12,000. 3. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE THE MECHANIC SPRAY PAINTED THE FRAME, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REMEDY DID NOT REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR MADE A CRACKING SOUND WHEN I ROTATED IT DOWN TO BLOCK THE SUN. ATTEMPTS TO PUSH IT FORWARD TO THE WINDSHIELD FAILED AND IT DROPPED DOWN VERTICAL BLOCKING MY VISION OF THE ROAD. I WAS UNABLE TO MOVE THE SUN VISOR BACK TO ITS STORED LOCATION SO I HAD TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND REMOVE THE SUN VISOR WITH A SCREWDRIVER. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO OUR 2010 TOYOTA CAMRY. AND WE HAD TO REMOVE THE VISOR ON THE ROAD. THERE IS AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ON THE 2010 SO IT WAS REPAIRED. REMOVING THE FABRIC ON THE TACOMA SUN VISOR I FOUND A METAL PLATE ON THE ROTATING ARM THAT WAS FROZEN AND IT HAD SPLIT THE PLASTIC HOUSING. I FOUND THE SAME DESIGN WITH THE CAMRY SUN VISOR. AND IT WAS ALSO FROZEN AND WOULD NOT FREELY ROTATE. TOYOTA REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE A DESIGN FLAW WITH THE SUN VISORS. THE SERVICE MANAGER WOULD NOT LOOK AT THE EXPOSED INNER WORKINGS OF THE SUN VISOR. WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT THE TOYOTA HOTLINE SAID TO BRING BOTH VEHICLES IN AND THE DEALERSHIP MAY REPAIR BOTH. THE SERVICE MANAGER SAID HE HAD WORKED WITH THEM FOR YEARS AND THEY DO NOT SAY THAT BUT GIVE YOU A REFERENCE NUMBER. THIS IS THE SECOND RUN IN WITH THE SAME DEALERSHIP. WHEN I BROUGHT IN THE CAMRY THEY WANTED ME TO PROVIDE PROOF OF THE AGREED ON EXTENDED WARRANTY FOR THIS REPAIR. I FOUND ON THE TOYOTA FORUMS THAT THERE IS MANY ISSUES WITH TOYOTA'S DRIVERS SIDE SUN VISOR. I TOOK MY 2005 TACOMA IN TO SEVRCO AUTO WINDWARD IN KANEOHE, HI ON 25 APRIL 2013 TO HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED FOR SEVERE RUST PERFORATIONS ON THE FRAME. ON APRIL 29TH, I WAS TOLD THAT MY VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT I WOULD NEED TO SIGN A WAIVER TO RETRIEVE MY VEHICLE. DEALER HAD INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND SENT PHOTOS TO TOYOTA TO SEE IF WARRANTY WORK WOULD BE COVERED. ON MAY 10TH, I WAS CONTACTED BY DEALER AND THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING FOR ME. I SPENT OVER $30,000.00 ON A TOYOTA BECAUSE THEY HAD A REPUTATION FOR RELIABILITY AND CUSTOMER SERVICE. NOW 8 YEARS LATER, I HAVE A TRUCK THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, AND NO RECOURSE FROM THE DEALER. *TR

I WAS DRIVING DOWN A COUNTY TWO LANE ROAD. AS I APPROACHED A SLIGHT CURVE, THE POWER STEERING SEEMED TO FAIL AND THE TRUCK RAN OFF THE EDGE OF THE ROAD. I IMMEDIATELY SLOWED THE VEHICLE, AND WITH LOTS OF MUSCLE I STEERED THE VEHICLE BACK ONTO THE ROAD. I JUMPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE SUCH AS A LEAKING STEERING HOSE OR BROKEN SERPENTINE BELT. NOT SEEING ANY IMMEDIATE DAMAGE, I SLOWLY DROVE THE VEHICLE ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF TO MY HOME. AFTER A THROUGH INVESTIGATION OF THE STEERING SYSTEM, I DISCOVERED THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT THAT ATTACHES THE STEERING COLUMN TO THE RACK & PINION, HAD A FROZEN/BINDING UNIVERSAL JOINT. THIS UNIVERSAL JOINT IS EXPOSED TO THE ELEMENTS AND DOES NOT HAVE A LUBRICATION FITTING. THIS ITEM IS NOT MENTIONED IN THE MANUAL UNDER PERIODIC MAINTENANCE. THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND HAS MOSTLY STAYED ON FOR QUITE A WHILE. TOYOTA ISSUED A RECALL FOR THE SPIRAL/CLOCKSPRING CABLE ON MY VEHICLE IN MARCH 2012, WHICH ADDRESSED THIS PROBLEM. HOWEVER, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE HAS GOTTEN WORSE. I TOOK IT TO A TOYOTA DEALER SHOP AND THEY INDICATED THAT IT WAS PROBABLY THE SPIRAL CABLE, AS WELL. SINCE THAT TIME, TOYOTA JUST ISSUED ANOTHER RECALL (APRIL 2014), AGAIN FOR THE SAME PROBLEM ON THE TACOMA AND OTHER VEHICLES. AGAIN, MY VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE SECOND RECALL. I CONTACTED TOYOTA HQ TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM. THEY NOTED IT, BUT HAVE TAKEN NO ACTION. MY VEHICLE HAS THE PROBLEM IDENTIFIED IN BOTH RECALLS FOR THE SAME VEHICLE, YET MY VIN IS NOT INCLUDED. I'M CONCERNED ABOUT MY SAFETY AND OTHERS SINCE THIS PROBLEM CAN PREVENT THE AIRBAG FROM DEPLOYING IN AN ACCIDENT. I BELIEVE THERE COULD BE A GAP IN THE SCOPE OF TOYOTA'S RECALL FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE TOYOTA TACOMA BECAME DIFFICULT TO STEER, AS THOUGH THE POWER STEERING WAS FAILING. TO NEGOTIATE THE VEHICLE THROUGH A BEND IN THE ROAD I HAD TO EXERT SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF FORCE ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND HAD TO MANUALLY FORCE THE WHEEL BACK TO CENTER. THIS MOMENTARILY INHIBITED ME FROM KEEPING THE VEHICLE CENTERED IN THE LANE. THIS PROBLEM HAS SINCE RECURRED INTERMITTENTLY. ON INSPECTION I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE IMPAIRED STEERING CONTROL TO BE CORROSION OF THE UNIVERSAL JOINT #2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT PART # 45203-04020. ON SEARCHING FOR A REMEDY I LEARNED THIS PART HAS BEEN REDESIGNED TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM, AND THE REPLACEMENT PART IS 45220-04020. APPLICATION OF PENETRATING OIL TO THE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT UNIVERSAL JOINT HAS REDUCED THE SEVERITY OF THE PROBLEM BUT NOT PERMANENTLY RESOLVED IT. IF THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED WHILE A YOUNGER, OLDER OR OTHERWISE PHYSICALLY WEAKER OPERATOR WAS DRIVING THEY MAY HAVE HAD DIFFICULTY KEEPING THE VEHICLE IN ITS LANE. *TR

I'VE INQUIRED ABOUT THE SITUATION 3 TIMES SINCE THEN AND HAVE JUST GOTTEN THE ANSWER THAT ITS UNDER INVESTIGATION. THIS HOLE WHICH I CAN ALMOST STICK MY FIST THROUGH LOOKS TO BE LOCATED IN THE CRUMBLE ZONE, AND IS IN A HIGH STRESSED PART OF THE FRAME. I KNOW TOYOTA HAS RECALLED FIRST GENERATION TRUCKS FOR FRAME ROT, BUT WHY HAVEN'T THEY RECALLED ANY OF THE SECOND GENERATION TRUCKS FOR THE SAME ISSUES. AS THE DRIVER APPROACHED A RED LIGHT, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE. HE PLANNED TO GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, PULL OVER TO INVESTIGATE. THE VEHICLE HAD FOUR NEW TIRES INSTALLED ON 12/27/12, AND OIL CHANGE AND NEW BRAKES INSTALLED ON 12/31/12. AT THE TIME THAT WORK WAS DONE, THE MECHANICS DID NOT OBSERVE ANY ISSUES WITH THE LUGS. THE WHEELS ARE ALLOY AFTERMARKET INSTALLED BY THE DEALER BEFORE THE VEHICLE WAS SOLD. THE VEHICLE HAD JUST EXITED THE HIGHWAY WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED. THE SUN VISORS IN MY TRUCK WILL NOT KEEP IN THE UP POSITION. IT STAYS HANGING BLOCKING MY VIEW. I HAVE ASKED TOYOTA TO REPAIR IT, BUT SINCE IT IS PAST THE WARRANTY PERIOD, THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT. I HAVE A 2005 TACOMA REGULAR CAB. IT HAS ROUGHLY 58K ON THE ODO AND THE FRAME IS RUSTED FROM THE FRONT TO THE BACK INSIDE AND OUT. IN SOME PLACES, SUCH AS THE REAR LEAF SPRING ATTACHMENT POINTS IT IS TO THE POINT WHERE SCALE FLAKING OFF AND ROT APPEARS TO BE TAKING PLACE. THIS IS UNSAFE AND UNACCEPTABLE FOR A VEHICLE PRODUCED IN TODAY'S DAY AND AGE! WHY ISN'T ANYTHING BEING DONE AS WAS THE CASE FOR THE PRE 2004 TRUCKS? AFTER TALKING WITH SEVERAL OTHER 2005+ TACOMA OWNERS, IT APPEARS AS THOUGH THE PROBLEM WAS NEVER SOLVED AND THE NEW 2ND GENERATION TRUCKS HAVE IT JUST AS BAD AS THE EARLY TACOMAS. AGAIN, THIS IS UNSAFE AND I TRULY HOPE TOYOTA IS WILLING TO STAND BEHIND THEIR TRUCKS AS THEY DID WITH THE EARLIER TACOMAS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS AN ECM AIR BAG MALFUNCTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE AND REFERRED HER TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 110,000.

DURING A ROUTINE OIL CHANGE I NOTICED A LARGE RUST HOLE IN THE PASSANGER SIDE FRAME RAIL. THE HOLE IS ROUGHLY 10-12 INCHES LONG ON THE INSIDE OF THE RAIL ROUGHLY UNDER THE PASSANGER SIDE FLOOR BOARD. I HAVE NOTICED ALOT OF SURFACE RUST OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND HAVE TRIED TO SEAL THE AREA..PAINT OR UNDER COAT... NOTHING SEEMS TO STOP THE RUST. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE DEALER WHERE YES THEY DO AKNOWLAGE THE HOLE BUT SAID SINCE THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF WARRANTY THEY WERE NOT PREPARED TO DO ANY THING ABOUT IT,,,SEE YA HAVE A NICE DAY. JUST STARTED MY TRUCK UP TO GO TO WORK AS USUAL AND AFTER ABOUT 1/2 A MILE THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. SO I EXAMINED IT MORE AND PULLED UP AIRBAG OPERATION DATA PASSENGER BUCKLE SW (SEATBELT) UNPLUGGED=UNSET PLUGGED IN=SET D SEAT POS WITH SEATBELT UNBUCKLED=BKWRD BUCKLED=FRWRD DRIVER BUCKLE SW UNPLUGGED=UNSET AND PLUGGED IN=UNSET. I FOLLOWED THE TOYOTA MOTOR SALES USA INC TROUBLE TREE FOR THIS DTC AND CAME TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE NEEDS REPLACED. WENT ONLINE AND GOOGLED THE DTC AND HAVE FOUND SEVERAL COMPLAINTS AND QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS DTC. SEVERAL FAILURES OF THE SPIRAL CABLE. THIS SEEMS LIKE IT IS A MANUFACTURING DEFECT THAT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO FAIL. I FEEL TOYOTA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND CORRECT THE DEFECTIVE PARTS. *TR
LAST YEAR DURING VEHICLE INSPECTION I WAS TOLD MY FRAME HAD RUST. I CHECKED WITH TOYOTA AND THEY HAD A RECALL FOR MODEL YEARS UP TO 2004 FOR FRAME RUST ISSUES. THIS YEAR WHILE MY TRUCK WAS ON THE LIFT FOR MECHANICAL WORK, THE MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE RUST ON MY FRAME WAS GETTING SERIOUS AND THERE WERE SOME POSSIBLE WEAK AREA'S. AGAIN I CONTACTED TOYOTA AND THEY SAID THEY HAVE HAD NO ISSUES NOR SEEN ANY RUST ON THE TRUCK FRAME. I ASKED IF THERE WAS A POSSIBILITY OF A SPLIT YEAR AND THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THAT 2005'S HAD A NEW DESIGN AND FRAME MANUFACTURER. I FILED A CASE WITH TOYOTA CASE #[XXX] JUST SO I WOULD BE ON RECORD. I HAVE ALSO SEEN MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE INTERNET WHEN I DID A SEARCH FOR FRAME RUST 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA. TOYOTA WILL DO NOTHING TO HELP. THE DRIVER SIDE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY FLAT AGAINST THE ROOF. IT APPEARS THE INTERNAL SPRING OR MECHANISM IS DEFECTIVE AND NO LONGER HOLDS THE VISOR IN A CORRECT POSITION. VISOR NOW JUST FLAPS DOWN OBSTRUCTING VIEW. *TR
