I WAS DRIVING MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA ON THE INTERSTATE AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH. I WAS USING CRUISE CONTROL AND I MERGED INTO THE PASSING LANE TO GET OVER FOR A HIGHWAY PATROL THAT HAD A TRUCK PULLED OVER. I ACCELERATED TO PASS ANOTHER TRUCK AND WHEN I WENT TO SLOW DOWN AFTER PASSING THE TRUCK SUDDENLY STARTED ACCELERATING BY ITSELF AND I COULD NOT GET THE BRAKES TO WORK. I THOUGHT SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SO I PUSHED THE BUTTON TO TURN IT OFF BUT IT CONTINUED TO ACCELERATE. I WAS SUDDENLY GOING OVER 90 MPH AND I COULD NOT STOP. I WAS PUSHING THE BRAKES AND NOTHING WAS HAPPENING, JUST FIGHTING AGAINST THE ACCELERATION. FINALLY I PUNCHED THE ACCELERATOR WITH MY FOOT AND IT FELT LIKE IT CAME UN-STUCK OR SOMETHING. I PREVIOUSLY TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR A RECALL TO CUT OFF THE GAS PEDAL SO IT WOULD NOT GET STUCK ON THE FLOOR MAT, SO MY PEDAL HAS ALREADY BEEN SHORTENED. I HAVE OWNED THIS VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW IN 2006 AND HAVE NEVER HAD ANYTHING LIKE THIS HAPPEN. IT WAS AS IF THERE WAS A COMPUTER GLITCH OR SOMETHING AND IT WAS JUST DRIVING ITSELF. *TR
AT AROUND 48,000 MILES, AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK IT TO TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS DIAGNOSED AT BROKEN SPIRAL CABLE. TOTAL COST TO FIX WAS 460 DOLLARS WITH LABOR. SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH 06 TACOMA. *KB
I RECENTLY HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE ENGINE FAN HITTING THE SHROUD ON MY 2006 TACOMA. I TOOK MY TACOMA INTO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THEY INFORMED ME THAT THE FRAME WAS CRACKED AROUND THE WELD WHERE THE DRIVERS' SIDE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKET WAS WELDED TO THE FRAME. THE BRACKET HAS STARTED SINKING INTO THE FRAME WHICH COULD ULTIMATELY CAUSE SERIOUS PROBLEMS TO CONSUMERS LEADING TO VEHICLE ACCIDENTS ETC. I HAVE BEEN DOING RESEARCH AND HAVE HEARD OF THIS SAME ISSUE HAPPENING WITH 2005 & 2006 TACOMAS FROM NUMEROUS OTHER TACOMA OWNERS. THE WELDS AROUND THE MOTOR MOUNT BRACKETS ARE WEAK. THESE SHOULD BE ONE OF THE STRONGEST WELDS ON THE TRUCK. TOYOTA ADVERTISES THEIR TRUCKS FOR OFF ROAD USE YET THEY BARELY HOLD UP TO NORMAL HIGHWAY DRIVING. I HOPE TOYOTA RESOLVES THIS MATTER ACCORDINGLY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THE AIR BAGS ILLUMINATE CONSTANTLY. IN CASE OF A CRASH THE AIR BAY WOULD NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO STATED IT NEEDED A SPIRAL CABLE AND CLOCK SPRING. THERE ARE NO RECALLS OR WARRANTY FOR THIS FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,375
THE TECHNICIAN NOTIFIED ME OF A TIMING COVER OIL LEAK. THE COST TO REPAIR WAS QUOTED AS $2,763.00. THIS LEAK HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A COMMON PROBLEM ON 2006 TACOMA AND DISCUSSED ON SEVERAL AUTO FORUMS. TOYOTA SHOULD INITIATE A RECALL TO FIX THIS HIGH DOLLAR, MANUFACTURER ERROR. *TR
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT ON AND WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $500 TO REPAIR. IF NOT FIXED, AIR BAGS WILL NOT DEPLOY! SOMETHING CALL "CLOCK SPRING" UNDER THE STEERING WHEEL HAS MALFUNCTIONED. *TR
NOTICED RUST ON THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE WITH HEAVIER AMOUNTS NEAR/ON WELD POINTS, & BOLT POINTS. RUST IS ACCUMULATING ON THE STEERING TIE RODS. HEAVY RUST ON REAR DIFFERENTIAL AND VARIOUS STEERING COMPONENT PARTS. I CONSIDER THE AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME AND THE ABOVE MENTIONED COMPONENTS A MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT. IF ANY OF THE COMPONENTS FAIL WHILE I AM DRIVING I COULD CRASH AND INJURE, OR KILL ANOTHER MOTORIST/MYSELF. I SPOKE WITH TOYOTA OF SD SERVICE REP WHO TOLD ME I SHOULD CONTACT TOYOTA. I HAVE A 100,000/10YR EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN AND WANT THIS RESOLVED PRIOR TO THE TIME FRAME RUNNING OUT. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE SRS WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE FAILURE RECURRED WHENEVER THE ENGINE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSIS AND THEY STATED THE SPIRAL CABLE WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN MADE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,950. VEHICLE WAS RECALLED FOR SPIRAL CABLE WHICH COULD RESULT IN AIRBAG LIGHT STAYING ON. TOYOTA HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG AND ARE USING THE SPIRAL CABLE AS AN EXCUSE TO GET YOU IN AND THEN CHARGE YOU FOR FIXING THEIR FAULTY AIRBAG. TOYOTA SHOULD BE RECALLING THE VEHICLES FOR FAULTY AIRBAGS NOT SPIRAL CABLES. THE MORE INVESTIGATION I DO THE MORE I CAN SEE THAT MANY OTHERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND ARE BEING IGNORED BY TOYOTA. *TR
THE FRAME AND MOST OF THE MECHANICAL COMPONENTS ATTACHED TO THE FRAME ON MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA PICK UP ARE RUSTING VERY RAPIDLY, IT HAS APPROX. 45,000 MILES ON IT. AT THE RATE IT IS RUSTING I FEEL IT IS GOING TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE DOWN THE ROAD WITH THE FRAME CRACKING OR A MECHANICAL PROBLEM. *TT

THE CONTACT STATED WHILE PARKING HIS FOOT BECAME STUCK BETWEEN THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE FLOOR MAT; AS A RESULT THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATED AND CRASHED INTO A POLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED AND THE DRIVER DID NOT SUSTAINED ANY INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING NOR WAS THE MANUFACTURER MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000.
TOYOTA DEALER AVOIDING MANDATED ACCELERATOR PEDAL REPAIR TO 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. ON THREE DIFFERENT OCCASIONS MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER HAS EITHER NOT RECEIVED PARTS, OUT OF PARTS OR WILL REQUIRE ME TO LEAVE THEM THE CAR FOR AN UNSPECIFIED TIME (WHILE PROVIDING ME WITH NO ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION). I SUSPECT, BUT HAVE NO PROOF, THAT THIS TOYOTA DEALER ATTEMPTING TO AVOID PERFORMING THE MANDATED REPAIR. I AM READY TO RE-SELL THIS TRUCK BUT WOULD LIKE TO HAVE THIS MANDATED REPAIR PERFORMED. *TR
JUST BOUGHT A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA FROM A TOYOTA DEALER AS A USED CERTIFIED VEHICLE. RECENTLY NOTICED RUST STAINS ON MY DRIVEWAY WHERE I PARK THE VEHICLE. I DECIDED TO LOOK UNDER THE TRUCK. I NOTICED THAT THE FRAME IS COVERED WITH RUST. MOSTLY ON WELDING POINTS AND FLAT SURFACES. I'VE BEEN RESEARCHING ONLINE AND HAVE COME TO FIND OUT THAT THIS WAS ONCE AN ISSUE WITH THIS TRUCK IN THE OLDER MODELS AND WAS STATED TO HAVE BEEN RESOLVED. BUT THE COMPLAINTS I'VE READ SO FAR HAVE BEEN OF THE SAME VEHICLE AS MINE BUILT BETWEEN 2005 - 2007. CALLED TOYOTA DIRECTLY AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED A RECALL OR SAFETY ISSUE. WAS TOLD TO CONTACT MY DEALER. I KNOW RUST IS CORROSIVE AND IS GOING TO SPREAD OVER TIME PROGRESSIVELY GETTING WORSE. I DON'T WANT TO BE DRIVING THE VEHICLE ONE DAY WITH MY CHILDREN AND HAVE THE VEHICLE NOT OPERATE PROPERLY AND CAUSE A AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT. THANKS
DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG LIGHT REMAINS ON. DIAGNOSED AS A FAILED SPIRAL CABLE. TOYOTA MOTORS THROUGH THEIR DEALER SHIP REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY RESPONSIBILITY (ROMAMO TOYOTA, SYRACUSE NY ) INTERNET RESEARCH INDICATES THAT THIS A COMMON PROBLEM AMONGST TOYOTA VEHICLES AND ESPECIALLY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA'S THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I TOOK MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA WITH 68,392 MILES ON THE ODOMETER TO MY LOCAL DEALER BECAUSE OF A TIRE PROBLEM. I MENTIONED THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT BEING DISPLAYED. AFTER THE TIRE PROBLEM WAS ADDRESSED, THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THE TECH FOUND THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WAS ON AND THAT THE COST OF REPLACING THE CLOCK SPRING IS $500. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME THAT THE AIRBAGS WILL STILL FUNCTION DESPITE THE WARNING LIGHT. THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT WAS NOT NOTED ON THE INVOICE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LATCH FOR THE CENTER CONSOLE, LOCATED BETWEEN THE FRONT SEATS FAILED AND WOULD NO LONGER CLOSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZE DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE CENTER CONSOLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE BECAUSE THE FAILURE WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 55,800. THE SRS WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AT APPROXIMATELY 73,500 MILES. TOYOTA DIAGNOSE IT AS A FAILED SPIRAL CABLE. THE COST TO REPLACE IT WAS ~$590 (INCLUDING THE $89 THEY CHARGED TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. AFTER RESEARCHING THE WEB, I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS COMPONENT FAILING FOR THE 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. SINCE THIS IS A SAFETY PROBLEM (AND SHOULD NOT FAIL AT THIS LOW MILEAGE), I AM REQUESTING A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE 2006 TOYOTA 4RUNNER HAS BEEN RECALLED FOR THE SAME PROBLEM. *TR

AIR BAG/SEAT BELT WARNING LIGHT IS ON FOR NO REASON. *KB
LETTER FROM SENATOR SNOWE ON BEHALF OF CONSTITUENT RE PROBLEMS WITH HIS 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS, THE ACCELERATOR BECAME LODGED UNDER THE FLOOR MAT. THE FIRST INCIDENT CAUSED SEVERE DAMAGED TO THE VEHICLE. THE SECOND INCIDENT HAPPENED TO THE CONSUMERS WIFE. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET THE VEHICLE TO A SAFE STOP WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE THIRD TIME THE INCIDENT HAPPENED THE CONSUMER ATTEMPTED TO APPLY THE BRAKE, BUT THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED OUT OF CONTROL AND CRASHED INTO A STONE WALL AND THE VEHICLE FLIPPED OVER AND LANDED ON ITS SIDE. THE CONSUMER STATED TOYOTA CONTINUED TO TELL HIM NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. MONTHS LATER THE CONSUMER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE PROBLEM, ONLY FOR THE CLAIM TO BE DENIED, BECAUSE HE COULDN'T REMEMBER WHAT SIDE THE MATS WERE ON. *JB

USED MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA PRERUNNER TO TOW A VEHICLE A SHORT DISTANCE BEFORE A SHORT CIRCUIT IN TRAILER WIRING CAUSED WIRING FIRE IN PRERUNNER---30 AMP FUSE IN TOYOTA FAILED TO PROTECT CIRCUIT, LEADING TO TOTAL TRUCK WIRING MELTDOWN AND RUIN. FUSE WAS OF THE AMPACITY REQUIRED BY TOYOTA--30 AMPS. TRUCK WAS PURCHASED NEW, NEVER INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT, AND NO CHANGES HAD BEEN MADE TO WIRING OR FUSE SYSTEMS. AUTO ELECTRIC REPAIR SHOP REQUIRED $2800 IN PARTS AND $2000 FOR LABOR TO REPAIR MELTED WIRING LOOMS AND FUSE BOX; THEY SUGGESTED THAT FAILURE COULD HAVE RESULTED BECAUSE TOYOTA USES A 30 AMP FUSE ON A #12 WIRE CIRCUIT THAT WILL MELT AND BURN BEFORE THE FUSE BLOWS. (12 GAUGE WIRE TYPICALLY MUST BE PROTECTED BY A 20-AMP FUSE.) TOYOTA (CORPORATE) REFUSES TO DEAL WITH MY ISSUE OR TALK TO ME ABOUT WHETHER THE FAILED FUSE AND MELTDOWN COULD HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY THEIR INSTALLING A FUSE WITH TOO HIGH AN AMPACITY RATING BECAUSE I DID NOT HAVE THE REPAIR DONE BY A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. IS THERE A DANGEROUS DESIGN FLAW WITH THE PRERUNNER? I AM CERTAIN THAT I DID NOTHING TO MY PRERUNNER (AS ITS ONLY OWNER) TO EXPLAIN WHY THE TRUCK NEARLY BURNED UP AND THE WIRING SYSTEM MELTED DOWN (AND WAS COMPLETELY RUINED) SIMPLY BECAUSE OF A SIMPLE SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE TRAILER I TOWED FOR LESS THAN ONE MILE (BEFORE MELTDOWN OCCURRED). I AM HOPEFUL THAT NHTSA MAY BE ABLE TO USE MY INFORMATION TO APPROACH TOYOTA ON THE POTENTIAL DESIGN DEFECT ISSUE AND, CERTAINLY, TO COLLECT MY COMPLAINT WITH ANY OTHER SIMILAR COMPLAINTS THAT COULD DENOTE A TREND OR SERIOUS SAFETY RISKS WITH THE TOYOTA TRUCK'S WIRING SYSTEM. *TR
BEEN TO DEALER ONCE 2 YEARS AGO ABOUT RUSTING FRAME AND THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD NOT BE ADDRESSED BECAUSE THERE WERE NO PERFORATIONS. I'M SORRY BUT ONCE THERE ARE PERFORATIONS THE VEHICLE HAS LOST STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY MAKING IT UNSAFE AND UNDRIVEABLE.. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT HE COULD REQUEST A DISCOUNT FOR THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,553.
114,00 MILES ON 2006 DEALER MAINTAINED TOYOTA TACOMA EXT. CAB 2WD 4CYL. SRS AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. DIAGNOSED AT TOYOTA DEALER SPIRAL CABLE FAILURE. THEY WANT $750 TO REPLACE THE CABLE. IT'S A SAFETY ITEM AND SHOULD BE COVERED FOR THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. TOYOTA HAS A PROBLEM, THERE HAS BEEN ENOUGH COMPLAINTS FILED,TIME TO DO SOMETHING. *TR
SRS INDICATOR LIGHT APPEARED ON DASHBOARD. I DROVE 100 MILES TO NEAREST DEALER WHO COULD DIAGNOSE AIRBAG ISSUES. I WAS TOLD THE SPIRAL CABLE FAILED AND THEREFORE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. QUOTED $400 FOR PART, PLUS 1.5 HRS OF LABOR, SO A TOTAL NEAR $600. CALLED TOYOTA AND THEY TOLD ME "SORRY!" BUT WOULD DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. I'VE BEEN DRIVING WITHOUT A WORKING AIR BAG FOR ALMOST 2 MONTHS NOW, SIMPLY BC I CAN'T AFFORD $600 FOR SOMETHING I DIDN'T BREAK. MILEAGE WAS NEAR 90000 MILES WHEN SRS LIGHT CAME ON. FROM READING THIS WEBSITE, OBVIOUSLY A RECALL IS NEEDED. TOYOTA JUST ANNOUNCED A SIMILAR ISSUE (SPIRAL CABLE) RECALL FOR THE 2006 HIGHLANDER, SO I'M ASSUMING THE TACOMA IS NEXT IN LINE! IF NOT, IT WILL BE HEFTY LAWSUIT WHEN AIRBAGS AREN'T DEPLOYING BC OF AN "OVERSIGHT" FROM TOYOTA. *TR

THE DEALER STATED THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO A BROKEN SPIRAL CABLE AND ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT UNDERNEATH THE HORN WHICH WOULD COST $ 496 IN ADDITION TO THE $ 88. *JB

TRUCK IS DRIVEN ON STREETS ONLY, AND RARELY USED TO CARRY HEAVY LOADS 2) SHOCK ABSORBER SEAT COMPONENT SPLIT AND THE CONSEQUENCE WAS THAT THE LOAD-BEARING SPRINGS DROPPED FROM TYPICAL PLATFORM. I HAVE A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA AND THE SUN VISOR WILL NOT STAY UP. WHEN THE PROBLEM STARTED IT WOULD BE AT A 30 DEGREE ANGLE FROM THE ROOF AND WHEN I GO OVER A BUMP IT DROPS COMPLETELY DOWN BLOCKING MY VIEW. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HIM THAT THE LUG NUTS HAD EXPANDED MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO USE THE WRENCH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE TIRES BEING REPLACED. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. DEALER SAID THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE AIRBAG SPIRAL CABLE THAT MAKES THE AIRBAG WORK. THEY SAID THEY HAVE A LOT OF THESE THAT THEY HAVE REPLACED. 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA DOUBLE CAB, V-6, 4WD. I BOUGHT THIS TRUCK NEW FROM PALMER'S TOYOTA IN MOBILE, AL. AT 72,000 MILES, THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. TOOK THE TRUCK IN FOR SERVICE AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE SPIRAL CABLE IN THE STEERING COLUMN WAS BAD. THE COST TO REPAIR IS IN EXCESS OF $500! I CHOSE NOT TO REPAIR AT THE TIME - HAVE BEEN DRIVING WITH THE LIGHT ON FOR A WEEK NOW. SERVICE REP SAID THAT UNTIL REPAIR IS MADE, MY AIRBAGS WERE "DISABLED". ON 7 SEPT 2011 JACOBSON TOYOTA, DURHAM, NC, NOTED "HEAVY RUST THROUGHOUT UNDERBODY" ON ITS "25-POINT INSPECTION." ON 14 SEPT 2011, BARKLEY TOYOTA, THE USUAL SERVICE PROVIDER, INSPECTED THE TRUCK, FOUND HEAVY RUST THROUGHOUT THE UNDERBODY, BUT SAID IT WAS UP TO TOYOTA TO FIX ANY PROBLEM. BARKLEY DID NOT EVALUATE SAFETY ISSUES. BARKLEY SAID PHOTOS AND A DESCRIPTION WOULD BE SENT TO TOYOTA AND I MIGHT, OR MIGHT NOT, HEAR DIRECTLY FROM THEM. IDENTICAL PROBLEMS WERE FOUND ON 1995-2005 TOYOTA TACOMA, AND A RECALL WAS ISSUED.
