I NOTICED SEVERE RUST WITH HOLES RUSTING THROUGH THE FRAME OF MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. WHEN I TOOK IT TO TOYOTA DEALER TO HAVE IT CHECKED THE EMPLOYEES THERE WOULD JUST SHAKE THEIR HEADS IN DISBELIEF. THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY TOOK PICTURES, AND THEY WOULD SEND THEM TO CORPORATE. THEY ALSO TOLD ME THAT IT WAS STILL SAFE TO DRIVE BUT THEY WOULDN'T GIVE ME ANYTHING IN WRITING. I AM CONCERNED ABOUT SAFETY, FRAME IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF A VEHICLE, AND WITH RUST 1/4 OF AN INCH THICK FLAKING OFF ALLOVER THE FRAME WITH HOLES RUSTING THROUGH I THINK I HAVE A GOOD REASON. I HAVE NEVER SEEN SUCH RUST EVEN ON TRUCKS 10 YEARS OLDER THEN THIS ONE. I DID NOT GET ANY RESPONSE FROM TOYOTA CORP., AND IT HAS BEEN OVER TWO MONTHS SINCE TOYOTA MECHANICS LOOKED AT IT. WHEN YOU PAY OVER $32, 000 FOR A TRUCK, THE FRAME SHOULD LAST BIT LONGER BEFORE IT TURNS INTO MUD. I WAS NOT AWARE OF THEIR PREVIOUS FRAME PROBLEMS WITH EARLIER MODELS AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. HOWEVER ISN'T IT NEGLIGENCE WHEN YOU RECALL A CERTAIN MODEL YEARS, AND CONTINUE MAKING NEWER MODELS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. DOESN'T ANYONE CONTROL THESE PEOPLE. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY PUT SO MANY PEOPLE IN DANGER. THIS SHOULD GIVE YOU GENERAL IDEA, BECAUSE THE MORE I THINK ABOUT IT THE MORE I GET UPSET. THANK YOU.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE HAVING REGULAR MAINTENANCE DONE, HE WAS NOTIFIED THAT THE FRAME WAS FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN VERIFIED THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO AGREED TO REPLACE THE FRAME FREE OF CHARGE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 123,800 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 129,000.   *TR
MAJOR FRAME RUST ISSUE. FRAME IS RUSTED TO THE POINT OF PERFORATION. BACK ON 6/23/14 TOYOTA ADVISED SPRAYING THE UNDERCARRIAGE, WHICH WAS DONE AT A DEALERSHIP REPAIR ORDER #0840463. WENT BACK TO HAVE THE LEAF SPRINGS FIXED DUE TO RECALL AND TO HAVE THE FRAME INSPECTED. NOW THE DEALERSHIP SAYS THE FRAME RUST RECALL EXPIRED IN MARCH OF 2016 AND IT IS OUT OF THEIR HANDS. NEED TO KNOW HOW TO GET TOYOTA TO FIX THE FRAME SINCE THE SPRAYING DID NOT RECTIFY THE PROBLEM AND IT CONTINUES TO GET WORSE.
MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA HAS DEVELOPED A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE FRAME. I HAVE DOCUMENTED THE RUST WITH PICTURES (CAN BE PROVIDED). THE RUST IS BEYOND NORMAL VEHICLE WEAR, WHICH IS IN FANTASTIC CONDITION OTHERWISE. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THEM TO QUICKLY LOOK AT IT AND DETERMINE IF THE RUST IS A MANUFACTURER ISSUE, SINCE PREVIOUS TACOMAS UP TO 2004 WERE RECALLED OR BOUGHT BACK DUE TO FRAME RUST. THEY STATED THE ONLY WAY THEY WOULD LOOK AT IT WOULD BE IF I PAID A $115 DIAGNOSTIC FEE, AND THAT SINCE IT ISN'T COVERED UNDER A RECALL THEY WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING. THEY DIDN'T OFFER ANY OTHER OPTIONS FOR ME TO CONSIDER. THE TOYOTA FRAME RUST PROGRAM WAS IDENTIFIED IN 2008, AFTER MY VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED BUT NOT INCLUDING 2006 TACOMAS. THE FRAME RUST I HAVE IS CLEARLY RELATED TO THE SAME FRAME ISSUES FROM PREVIOUS YEARS' TACOMAS. BASED ON EXTENSIVE ONLINE RESEARCH, 2005-06 TACOMA (AS WELL AS TUNDRA) OWNERS ARE COMPLAINING AT VOLUME ABOUT RUST ISSUES AS WELL, INCLUDING THEIR FRAMES BREAKING IN HALF, SIGNIFICANT HOLES DEVELOPING, SPARE TIRES FALLING OFF, AND OTHER RELATED SAFETY HAZARDS. I DO FEEL THAT THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE FOR MYSELF, MY FAMILY, AND OTHERS THAT ARE DRIVING BEHIND ME ON THE HIGHWAY. I WASH MY VEHICLE EVERY SO OFTEN AND DO NOT DRIVE IN ADVERSE CONDITIONS. I HAVE MY VEHICLE REGULARLY MAINTAINED AT THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, WHO HAVE NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT MY FRAME RUST BEING ABNORMAL AFTER THEIR INSPECTIONS. I AM WILLING TO GO TO GREAT LENGTHS TO PROTECT MY VEHICLE INVESTMENT, MY AND MY FAMILY'S SAFETY, AND ENSURE THE RIGHT THING IS DONE. THIS INCLUDES PUBLIC DISCLOSURE ON TOYOTA'S FACEBOOK PAGE, REPEATED CONTACT WITH THE DEALERSHIP, AND EXPLORING LARGER PROFILE COMPLAINTS AND PETITIONS. I WOULD LIKE MY FRAME RUST FIXED (FRAME REPAIRED, FRAME REPLACED, OR BOUGHT BACK) BY TOYOTA IMMEDIATELY. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS AT THE LOCAL MECHANIC FOR INSPECTION THE SUBFRAME WAS FOUND SEVERELY CORRODED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,800. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 28,600.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 1996 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY AND INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DISCOVERED THAT THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE LOCAL DEALER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE MANUFACTURER WAS NO LONGER PROVIDING A REMEDY FOR THE DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 220,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH WHEN THE AIR BAGS ERRONEOUSLY DEPLOYED, CAUSING HIM TO CRASH. THE CONTACT SUFFERED HEAD TRAUMA, BACK AND NECK INJURIES AND A BROKEN STERNUM. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE CONTACT HAD PREVIOUSLY TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER 12V092000 (AIR BAGS) BUT NO REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED BECAUSE THE AIR BAG LIGHT WAS NOT ILLUMINATED WHEN TAKEN FOR THE RECALL SERVICE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 72,000.
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT IN DASHBOARD CAME ON CONSTANTLY A MONTH AGO. IT IS STILL ON. *TR
FRAME IS CONTINUING TO RUST AT AN ALARMING RATE. FIRST REPORTED ISSUE IN SEPTEMBER. I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING BACK FROM TOYOTA REGARDING A RECALL. *TR
TOOK MY TOYOTA TACOMA IN TO HAVE SNOW TIRES PUT ON THE VEHICLE, THE TECH. SAID THE FRAME HAD RUST HOLES IN IT AND WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. RUST WAS FLAKING OFF ALL OVER THE FRAME, THIS VEHICLE IS ONLY 7 YRS. OLD THEY ARE SENDING A INSPECTOR TO SEE IF TOYOTA WILL PAY FOR A NEW FRAME. I HAVE A FORD 450 2002 AND IT'S FRAME IS IN MUCH BETTER SHAPE. *TR
AT ABOUT 30 MPH, WE HIT A BUMP, AND THE FUEL TANK STRAP FELL OFF OUR TOYOTA TACOMA DOUBLE CAB. WHEN WE BROUGHT THE VEHICLE TO THE TOYOTA DEALER, WHERE WE HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED SINCE PURCHASING IT NEW IN 06, WE WERE TOLD THAT THE FRAME IS PERFORATED DUE TO RUST AND THAT THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DEALER SUGGESTED WE CONTACT TOYOTA, WHICH WE DID. BOTH THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE AND HIS SUPERVISOR TOLD US THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. THE SUPERVISOR ALSO SAID THERE IS NO ONE ELSE ABOVE HER AT TOYOTA WHO TAKES PHONE CALLS. WE HAVE BEEN LOYAL TOYOTA CUSTOMERS, PURCHASING 8 NEW TOYOTA VEHICLES IN THE LAST 30 YEARS. WE PRESENTLY HAVE 3 TOYOTAS, AND WE ARE APPALLED THAT TOYOTA WILL NOT REMEDY THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ON THE TACOMA. *TR
PURCHASED MY TRUCK FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE ALWAYS TAKEN IT IN FOR THE OIL CHANGE WITH THE DEALER INSPECTION TICKETS SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED. IN THE LAST INSPECTION I WAS INFORMED THAT THE BRAKES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. TOOK IT TO ANOTHER SHOP WHERE THE LEAD MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT MY CAR WAS "UNSAFE" DUE TO SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE LEAF SPRINGS AND FRAME AREA BOLTS NEAR THE LEAF SPRINGS. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO ASK HOW MY CAR HAD GONE THROUGH ALL OF THESE INSPECTIONS AND I HAD NEVER HEARD THAT MY VEHICLE HAD "UNSAFE" LEVELS OF RUST ON THE UNDERCARRIAGE. I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY DO NOT INSPECT THE UNDERCARRIAGE ( !? ). WHEN I ASKED FOR THE BEST COURSE OF ACTION, I WAS INFORMED THAT A CAR WITH RUST ON THE FRAME SHOULD BE JUNKED. I CANNOT BELIEVE I SPENT ALL THAT MONEY FOR WHAT I THOUGHT WAS A QUALITY TRUCK THAT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. *TR
NOTICED A LOUD RUBBING NOISE FROM THE RADIATOR FAN HITTING THE SHROUD IN REVERSE. OPENED THE HOOD TO OBSERVE THAT ENTIRE ENGINE WAS LEANING TO THE DRIVERS SIDE. NOTICED FROM UNDER VEHICLE THAT THE DRIVERS SIDE MOTOR MOUNT WAS COLLAPSED INTO THE FRAME BY APPROXIMATELY 3/4 OF AN INCH. FURTHER OBSERVATION INDICATED THAT THE MOUNT APPEARED TO BREAK AT THE WELD AND THEN TEAR THE FRAME IN FRONT AND BEHIND OF THE WELDS FOR THE MOTOR MOUNT. LOOKED ON-LINE FOR SIMILAR OCCURRENCES AND DISCOVERED THAT MANY OWNERS OF THIS VEHICLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITHOUT ANY RESOLUTION FROM THE MANUFACTURER (TOYOTA). OTHERS ON SIMILAR SITES OBSERVED THAT BETWEEN THE 2006 MODEL YEAR (MINE) AND 2007 MODEL YEARS TOYOTA ADDED A REINFORCEMENT TO THE MOTOR MOUNT INDICATING THAT THEY KNEW OF A PROBLEM BUT WERE NOT WILLING TO ALERT OWNERS TO THE PROBLEM. I HAVE PICTURES OF MY BROKEN FRAME AND A 2007 AND LATER MODEL FRAME TO SHOW WHERE THE ENGINE MOUNTS WERE REINFORCED. *TR
THE FRAME ON MY 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA HAS A RUST HOLE BY THE TRANS CROSS MEMBER. THE FRAME IS ALSO RUSTED VERY BADLY. I DRIVE 150 MILES A DAY ROUND TRIP TO WORK AND ALSO MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE. *TR
AT ANNUAL INSPECTION MECHANIC NOTED RUST HOLES IN THE FRAME AND CORROSION IN CONNECTIONS OF PLATES TO FRAME. THIS IS OF COURSE A SAFETY HAZARD THAT PREVENTS THE VEHICLE FROM PASSING INSPECTION. DEALER INSPECTED AND CONFIRMED THE CORROSION. WE PURCHASED THE TRUCK NEW. WE LIVE ON A DIRT ROAD WITH NO SALT USE, KEEP THE TRUCK GARAGED IN WINTER, AND DO NOT DRIVE IT REGULARLY IN WINTER. IT IS OTHERWISE A SOUND AND TROUBLE-FREE VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V604000 (SUSPENSION). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED TO REMEDY THE VEHICLE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. UPDATED 3/24/15*CN THE CONSUMER STATED THE LEAF SPRING ON THE PASSENGER FAILED. WHEN IT FAILED, IT SHOT OUT UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE TOWARD THE BRAKE AND GAS LINES. THE CONSUMER STATED WHILE DRIVING, HE HEARD A LOUD NOISE COMING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. HE DISCOVERED THE HEAT SHIELD WAS LOOSE, DUE TO THE RUSTING THE PROBLEM. WHILED I WAS DRIVING I WENT OVER A BUMP IN THE ROAD. THE FAN ON MY TRUCK STARTED MAKING A LOUD NOISE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR SHOP TO BE CHECKED. THIS I WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT THE FRAME ON MY 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA WAS CRACKED AND CAVING IN WHERE THE MOTOR MOUNTS ATTACH TO THE FRAME. THIS CAUSED THE MOTOR TO DROP DOWN AND THE FAN STARTED HITTING ON THE SHROUD. ALSO IT PIERCED A HOLE IN MY UPPER OIL PAN WHEN THE MOTOR DROPPED DOWN AND HIT THE RACK AND PINION. UPON RESEARCH THERE ARE MANY MANY CASES OF THIS HAPPENING TO THE 2005 -2006 TACOMA TRUCKS. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT TOYOTA REFUSES TO FIX.
THE FRAME ON MY 2006 TACOMA IS SHOWING MODERATE RUST AFTER 78,000 MILES. I DON'T LIVE IN A COLD WEATHER STATE. I'VE PROBABLY ONLY DRIVEN IT ON SALTED ROADS FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS IN MAYBE 2 OF THE WINTERS I'VE OWNED IT. THE RUST IS WORST ABOVE WHERE THE REAR LEAF SPRINGS ARE, BUT BASICALLY THE ENTIRE FRAME SHOWS SIGN OF RUSTING. THE TACOMA IS TERRIBLE COMPARED TO THE FORD F-250 THAT WE'VE HAD FOR THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME WITH MORE THAN 40,000 EXTRA MILES. THE FORD BARELY HAS ANY RUST AT ALL. I'M WORRIED THAT WITHIN 2 YEARS THAT MY FRAME WILL HAVE HOLES IN IT, AND THE TRUCK WILL NOT BE SAFE TO DRIVE. *TR
THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE GARAGE FOR THE REQUIRED ANNUAL STATE OF MAINE SAFETY INSPECTION. THE RESULTS DISCLOSED SEVERE RUSTING OF THE FRAME, ENGINE MOUNTS, AND CAB MOUNTS. BECAUSE THERE WERE NO PERFORATIONS IN THE FRAME, THE VEHICLE PASSED INSPECTION. THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE TRUCK IS IN IMMINENT NEED OF FRAME REPLACEMENT. *TR
FRAME ON MY 2006 TACOMA IS RUSTING/ROTTING OUT(ALMOST A HOLE BESIDE THE TRANSMISSION). TOYOTA WILL NOT ASSIST. I HAVE PIC'S AVAILABLE. *TR
ON OCTOBER 2013 I APPROACHED A RED LIGHT (NO CAR IN FRONT OF ME) THE ROAD SURFACE WAS WET AND THE ABS KICKED IN. WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKE HARD, THE ENGINE STARTED TO ACCELERATE AND I COULDN'T HOLD THE TRUCK BACK. I WENT THROUGH THE RED LIGHT AVOIDING AN ACCIDENT. I CALLED THE TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT I PROBABLY DID NOT PRESS DOWN ON THE BRAKE HARD ENOUGH. ON JANUARY 2014 THE SAME THING OCCURRED. HERE AGAIN I WAS FORTUNATE THAT ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS NOT IN FRONT OF ME AND THIS TIME I WENT THROUGH A STOP SIGN. I CALLED THE DEALER AND HAD IT CHECKED OUT. THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. MARCH 15TH IT HAPPENED AGAIN. ONCE AGAIN I WAS LUCKY THAT NO VEHICLE WAS IN FRONT OF ME, BUT I NOW BRAKE WAY IN ADVANCE OF A LIGHT OR STOP SIGN BECAUSE OF FEAR. THIS TIME WHEN THE ENGINE STARTED TO ACCELERATE I GOT OFF THE BRAKE AND WENT RIGHT BACK ON AND THE ENGINE STOPPED ACCELERATING. I ONCE AGAIN PUT IT IN THE GARAGE AND THEY FOUND NOTHING WRONG. I THINK THAT THE UNINTENTIONAL ACCELERATION IS TRIGGERED WHEN HARD PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE BRAKES WHEN THE ABS KICKS IN. I'M NOT A ROOKIE DRIVER. I'VE BEEN DRIVING TACOMAS FOR OVER 30 YEARS. THIS IS MY 4TH ONE. AFTER HAPPENING THREE TIMES, IT IS DEFINITELY A PROBLEM WITH THE TRUCK. THIS IS A POSSIBLE SERIOUS ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN. WHAT CAN I DO TO GET TOYOTA TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM? VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND PASSENGER UNLOCKED SEAT BELT TO DEPART VEHICLE. PASSENGER SEAT BELT RETRACTED WHEN PASSENGER DEPARTED VEHICLE AND SEAT BELT LOCKED IN RETRACTOR. SEAT BELT DOES NOT RETRACT OR EXTEND.
DREADED TOYOTA FRAME RUST, THE FRAME IS RUSTING EXTENSIVELY AND I AM WORRIED IT WILL RUST THROUGH. THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS BUT NO ACTION SO FAR. RUST, RUST, RUST...IF IT IS A TOYOTA, IT WILL RUST. *TR
TOOK TRUCK INTO DEALER FOR SERVICE AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME HAD RUSTED TO THE POINT THAT THERE WAS NOW A HOLE IN IT. CONTACTED TOYOTA VIA PHONE AND EMAIL AND WAS TOLD ON BOTH OCCASIONS THAT THERE WAS NOT A "PROGRAM" IN PLACE TO ASSIST OWNERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. PREVIOUS REPLACEMENT PROGRAM COVERED TACOMAS MADE FROM 1998-2004 THAT EXHIBITED THE SAME ISSUES, PREMATURE RUSTING/CORROSION OF THE TRUCKS' FAMES. MY LIMITED RESEARCH HAS SHOWN NUMEROUS CASES WHERE THE FRAMES OF THE TRUCK CORRODES TO THE POINT THAT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A DEFECT WITH THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF THE TRUCK AND ONE THAT TOYOTA HAS BEEN MADE AWARE OF NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT REFUSES TO ADDRESS. IT IS MY BELIEVE THAT THEY SHOULD ASSIST THEIR CUSTOMERS BY REPLACING THE FRAMES THAT HAVE DETERIORATED PREMATURELY. AFTER TALKING WITH TOYOTA AND MULTIPLE DEALERS, I HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO TURN FOR ASSISTANCE. ANY HELP YOU CAN BE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. *TR
COMPLETE LOSS OF BRAKING WHEN PRESSING DOWN ON BRAKE PEDAL. VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPARTMENT AND THEY STATED THE CONDITION WAS CAUSED BY LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID DUE TO EXTENSIVE CORROSION/RUST OF THE BRAKE LINE AND THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF LIFE WHEN BRAKES FAIL DUE TO THE DEFECTIVE MATERIAL THAT IS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE OF THE BRAKE LINE. A RECALL IS NECESSARY AND MUST BE IMPLEMENTED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AS THIS IS SUCH A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WHICH CAN RESULT IN LOSS OF LIFE. PARTS ATTACHED TO FRAME ALSO EXCESSIVELY CORRODED. CONCERNED FOR OVERALL SAFETY AND INTEGRITY OF VEHICLE AT THIS POINT. SUSPENSION AND LEAF SPRINGS POINT OF CONTACT WITH FRAME ARE CORRODED. ALL NUTS/BOLTS ATTACHED TO FRAME ARE ALSO EXCESSIVELY RUSTED AND CORRODED. VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 75000 MILES. IT WAS PURCHASED AS A LONG TERM VEHICLE. TRUCK'S BRAKES FAILED, TOWED TO SHOP. SHOP REPLACED STEEL BRAKE LINES WITH COPPER NICKEL BUT WARNED OF RUST TO FRAME. WHEN TRUCK WAS AT HOME, PUT IT UP ON STANDS, WENT UNDERNEATH, CHECKED FRAME AND FOUND HOLES MADE BY RUST THROUGH THE FRAME. TOYOTA RECALLED EARLIER TACOMA'S (UP TO 2004) FOR DEFECTIVE FRAMES. THIS 2006 TACOMA HAS EXACTLY THE SAME PROBLEM - RUST HOLES IN FRAME. THESE TACOMAS ARE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL OF 2005 AND 2006 TACOMAS AND MAYBE MORE. IN OCTOBER OF 2012 I PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA FROM INTERSTATE TOYOTA IN AIRMONT, NY. THE VEHICLE HAD 79,000 MILES ON IT, HAD AND HAD PASSED THE TOYOTA 160 POINT / CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED INSPECTION. PRIOR TO THE PURCHASE I ASKED ABOUT MISSING REAR WHEEL MOLDING, NON FUNCTIONING OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE GAUGE AND WHAT LOOKED LIKE RUST ON THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE WAS BROUGHT INTO THEIR SHOP AND PUT ON A LIFT. THE MOLDING WAS REPAIRED, THE GUAGE ORDERED AND SHIPPED TO MY HOME, AND I WAS ASSURED BY MY SALESMAN, JUSTIN GOETZ, THAT THE RUST WAS MERELY SURFACE RUST, AND THAT THE VEHICLE WOULDN'T HAVE PASSED THE 160 POINT INSPECTION HAD IT BEEN MORE THEN JUST SIMPLE SURFACE RUST. I WAS HAPPY WITH MY TRUCK AND PURCHASED IT WITH THEIR PLATINUM WARRANTY COVERAGE USING TOYOTA FINANCIAL. SEVERAL WEEKS AGO THE A/C STOPPED WORKING. I GOT AN APPOINTMENT AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP, SHORE TOYOTA, IN PLEASANTVILLE NJ TO HAVE IT FIXED. I ASKED THAT THE A/C BE CHECKED, AND THAT THE FRAME BE CHECKED AS A MECHANIC THAT PERFORMED MY LAST OIL CHANGE HAD NOTED CONCERN ABOUT FRAME RUST TO ME. SHORE TOYOTA REPLACED THE A/C CLUTCH (COVERED UNDER WARRANTY), AND PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT "THE VEHICLE SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN AND TAKEN OFF THE ROAD IMMEDIATELY AS THE VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE!!" I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME WAS SEVERELY RUSTED OUT WITH PERFERATIONS HOLES ON THE LEFT & RIGHT SIDE RAILS. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NO WAY THIS VEHICLE COULD HAVE PASSED A 160 POINT INSPECTION BECAUSE IT WOULD TAKE MUCH LONGER THEN 8 TO 9 MONTHS FOR SO MUCH ROT TO OCCUR. I WAS FLOORED!! I JUST WANTED MY A/C FIXED. I NEVER COULD HAVE IMAGINED THAT MY $20,000+ TRUCK WAS A JUNKER.....THAT I'D BEEN HAD. IT SEEMS THAT THE TACOMA'S THAT HAVE A DRL AND TURN SIGNAL ALL-IN-ONE ASSEMBLY ARE BURNING OR MELTING THE LENS IN FRONT OF THE BULB. MINE CURRENTLY HAS A YELLOWING LENS ARE CRACKED AND THE PLASTIC IS BURNED IN FRONT OF THE BULB. THE TACOMA FORUMS ARE FULL OF DRIVERS WITH THIS PROBLEM. OBVIOUSLY, THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING WITH NO SOLUTION TO REPAIR. TOYOTA STATES THERE IS NO PROBLEM WITH THIS ASSEMBLY, BUT WILL CHARGE $1000+ FOR NEW HEADLIGHT/TURN SIGNAL ASSEMBLIES FOR REPLACEMENT. DURING SOME UNDER BODY INSPECTIONS PRIOR TO PERFORMING SOME BRAKE REPAIR, I NOTICED A CRACK IN THE REAR DRIVERS SIDE FRAME IN FRONT OF THE SHOCK MOUNT. I CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED A PERFORATION AND CRACK ACROSS BOTTOM PORTION OF C-CHANNEL IN FRAME. THE DENIED ANY RESPONSIBILITY AND CLAIMED THE CRACK WAS DUE TO SEVERE OFFROADING, WHICH IS ABSOLUTELY INCORRECT. I ASKED THEM TO PROVE THAT THEORY AND THEY COULD NOT. THEY WOULD ONLY PROVIDE A REFERENCE NUMBER AND THAT I COULD CONTACT THEIR LEGAL DEPARTMENT. I AM NOW STUCK WITH A 6-ISH YEAR OLD VEHICLE THAT CANNOT BE DRIVEN. *TR
ON 5/18/13, WHILE PREPARING TO SERVICE THIS TRUCK, I FOUND THAT THE FRONT FRAME CROSSMEMBER HAD SEVERE RUST DAMAGE. ON FURTHER INSPECTION, I SAW THAT THE MOUNT FOR THE LOWER CONTROL ARM ON THE FRAME HAD COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED; THERE WAS VERY LITTLE METAL LEFT TO HOLD THE CONTROL ARM IN PLACE. THIS WAS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I CHECKED THE SAME MOUNT ON THE RIGHT SIDE AND FOUND THAT IT TOO HAD RUST PERFORATION, THOUGH NOT AS BAD AS THE OTHER SIDE. I ALSO FOUND THAT THE FRAME RAIL ITSELF HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH ON THE LEFT SIDE. I DECIDED TO PARK THE TRUCK. AFTER TALKING WITH TWO LOCAL MECHANICS, WHO BOTH AGREED THAT THIS TRUCK WAS DEFINITELY NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, I CONTACTED TOYOTA CORPORATE IN CALIFORNIA. I WAS TOLD BY THREE DIFFERENT TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVES THAT THIS TRUCK WAS NOT COVERED BY ANY RECALL, AND THAT MY ONLY OPTION WAS TO HAVE IT REPAIRED AT MY EXPENSE. I AM WELL AWARE THAT TOYOTA HAS HAD SEVERE FRAME RUST ISSUES, AND I STRONGLY FEEL THAT THEY SHOULD EXTEND THEIR RECALL TO INCLUDE OTHER MODEL YEARS. ON 3/14/2013 I NOTICED A NOISE THAT SEEMED TO BE COMING FROM THE REAR SUSPENSION OF MY VEHICLE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY MECHANIC, WHO UPON INSPECTION NOTED THAT BOTH REAR LEAF SPRINGS WERE BROKEN.(SEE DOCUMENT) I THEN HAD THE VEHICLE REPAIRED ON 3/22/2013. ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2014 THE NHTSA ANNOUNCED THE RECALL OF MY VEHICLE FOR THE LEAF SPRINGS(RECALL ID 14V604) SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET REIMBURSED BY TOYOTA FOR THE REPAIRS THAT I HAD COMPLETED PRIOR TO THE RECALL. I HAVE CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE SEVERAL TIMES AND EACH TIME THEY HAVE TOLD ME I NEEDED TO SEND MORE DOCUMENTATION. I'VE ATTACHED THE REQUIRED DOCUMENTS I HAVE SENT THEM, INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL INVOICE FOR DIAGNOSIS, THE REPAIR AND A LETTER FROM MY MECHANIC ON LETTERHEAD SUPPORTING THOSE DOCUMENTS. AT ONE POINT IN DECEMBER 2015, THEY TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE I WAS SPEAKING WITH, ACTUALLY CALLED THE MECHANIC TO GET VERBAL SUPPORT OF THESE DOCUMENTS. IN DECEMBER, I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM TOYOTA STATING THAT THE REMEDY WOULD BE PROVIDED IN EARLY 2016. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT ONCE THE REMEDY WAS PROVIDED I COULD THEN RECEIVE REIMBURSEMENT FOR THE REPAIR. YESTERDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2016, I WAS CHECKING THE STATUS OF THE RECALL ON MY TRUCK ON TOYOTA.COM AND IT STATED THAT "THERE WERE NO OPEN RECALLS ON MY VEHICLE AT THIS TIME" I CONTACTED TOYOTA AGAIN AND THEY STATED THAT I DID NOT SEND THE PROPER PAPERWORK AND THAT I HAD TO PROVE MY VEHICLE WAS PART OF THE RECALL. I'VE ATTACHED THE REPAIR ORDER AND LETTER FROM MY MECHANIC AS WELL AS A COPY OF THE RECALL NOTIFICATION AND A LOOK-UP FROM THE TOYOTA SITE THAT SHOWS MY VEHICLE IS COVERED UNDER THE RECALL.
