I was driving my Toyota Tacoma and all of the sudden, without any warning I felt an abrupt bump which caused the bed of the truck to jump a foot in the air. Looking in my mirrors to find out what happened I saw a tire rolling beside my truck past me into the other lane. Thankfully there were no cars approaching. I pulled over and examined my vehicle. I saw my spare was not there. I found the wheel now laying in the middle of the street and realized this was my spare tire that came off. In the street near where the bump occurred I found the spare retention part and a metal part with frayed wires. I put the spare tire and parts in the truck and called the Toyota Corperate and told them what happened. I was informed that my vehicle was not subject to a recall for the spare tire retention system. They informed me that I would need to take it to the dealer for inspection. My tacoma is at the dealer with the parts. They are covering the costs of the repair now after initally telling me I would have to pay to repair it. The spare tire coming off during motion put me, my family and other motorists in danger. I was on my way to fill up my truck for a camping trip where we pull a trailer. I can only imagine what would happen if the wheel came off while I was towing my trailer. Would it cause my trailer to flip over, causing an accident, injury or even death of my family or others?
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA EQUIPPED WITH HANKOOK ROADHANDLER SPORT TIRES, SIZE: P245/75/R16 (NA). WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THERE WAS A VIBRATION IN THE TIRES AND THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE TIRE BLEW OUT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE CONTACT'S RESIDENCE AND AN EYEWITNESS WAS ABLE TO INSTALL THE SPARE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SEARS AUTO (LOCATED AT 693 STILLWATER AVE BANGOR, MAINE 0441) WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE ENTIRE SIDEWALL FAILED DUE TO A DEFECT OF THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE TIRE WAS EXCLUSIVELY MANUFACTURED FOR SEARS. THE TIRE WAS NOT REPLACED. THE APPROXIMATE VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,000 AND THE TIRE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. THE DOT NUMBER WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
DUNLOP ROVER H/T 265/65-17 TIRE BLEW OUT SITTING IN DRIVEWAY. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DRIVEN IN OVER A WEEK. TIRE TREAD ONLY HALF WORN.
THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL BEARING FAILED AT ABOUT 72000 MILES. A YEAR LATER BOTH REAR TIRE BEARINGS FAILED AT ABOUT 77000 MILES. IN BOTH INSTANCES I NOTED AN ABNORMAL LOW PITCHED RUMBLING SOUND COMING FROM THE WHEELS AS I DROVE THE VEHICLE. THE NEED TO REPLACE THREE BEARINGS ON A VEHICLE THAT HAS LESS THAN 80,000 MILES IS CLEARLY ABNORMAL AND SUGGEST A MANUFACTURING DEFECT. NO UNUSUAL LOADS OR ROAD TRAVEL WAS UNDERTAKEN BY THIS VEHICLE. REAR PASSENGER TIRE ABRUPT DELAMINATION FAILURE DURING USUAL HIGHWAY USE OF 16 MONTH OLD GOODYEAR WRANGLER SILENT ARMOR KEVLAR SIDEWALL RADIAL TIRE WITH SLIGHTLY OVER 2000 MILES PAVED ROAD USE WITHOUT PRE-EVENT AIR TIRE PRESSURE LOSS INDICATION OR HAZARD EVENT. THE VEHICLE IS A FLAT BED PICK-UP NEVER USED FOR LOAD BEARING DUTIES. SIMILAR TIRES LISTED AS RECALLED FROM YEAR 2009 MANUFACTURE AS ANNOUNCED IN 2012. TIRE FORENSIC REQUESTED. WHILE ROTATING TIRES, I HAVE HAD THREE DIFFERENT WHEEL LUGS BREAK, ONE APPROXIMATELY 10000 MILES PREVIOUSLY AND TWO ON THE SAME WHEEL ON THE DATE INDICATED ABOVE. THE LUG NUTS WHERE NOT CROSS THREADED. THESE LUGS WHERE BROKEN WHILE TORQUING THE NUTS PER THE MANUFACTURER SPECIFICATION. THE TORQUE WRENCH WAS NOT PROFESSIONALLY CALIBRATED, BUT WAS COMPARED TO A RECENTLY CALIBRATED TORQUE WRENCH, BOTH WRENCHES COINCIDED. GRANTED THE LUGS HAVE HAD A SMALL AMOUNT OF OIL FOR LUBRICATION. HOWEVER, I HAD A GENTLEMAN WHOM WAS A METALLURGIST HIS WORKING CAREER AND DID FAILURE ANALYSIS FOR A OIL COMPANY. BASED ON VISUAL INSPECTION OF THE FAILURE, HE INDICATED THE PART FAILED FROM FATIGUE AND WAS NOT OVER TORQUED. THEREFORE, IF A FATIGUE IS PROVEN BY FURTHER ANALYSIS, MY CONCERN IS THAT THESE PARTS COULD CAUSE FAILURE WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEED WITH DETRIMENTAL RESULTS. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER EXPERIENCING A FLAT TIRE. HE ATTEMPTED TO USE HIS LUG NUT WRENCH WHICH WOULD NOT REMOVE THE LUG NUTS AS NEEDED. ANOTHER VEHICLE CAME ALONG AND OFFERED SOME ASSISTANCE WITH A LARGER LUG NUT WRENCH. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED HIM THAT THE LUG NUTS HAD EXPANDED MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO USE THE WRENCH. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE TIRES BEING REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHERE THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE A FAILURE. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND NOTICED THAT THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE AND THE FRONT AND REAR PASSENGER SIDE RIMS WERE CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 06V061000 (TIRES:BEAD) AND TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION BUT THE TIRES WERE NOT REPLACED UNDER THE RECALL. WHEN THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT THE FRONT AND REAR TIRES WERE CRACKED AROUND THE SIDEWALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE SHOP WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LABEL ON HIS VEHICLE REQUIRES THE AIR PRESSURE IN HIS TIRES TO BE AT 29 PSI. WHEN TIRE PRESSURE IS AT 29 PSI, THE PRESSURE INDICATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATES AND REMAINS LIT. THE VEHICLE DRIFTS ALL OVER THE ROAD AND THE TIRES WEAR OUT QUICKLY FROM UNDER INFLATION. THE TIRE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE AIR PRESSURE FOR THE TIRES SHOULD BE 51 PSI. A MECHANIC AT ANOTHER SHOP STATED THAT 45 PSI IS THE BEST AIR PRESSURE FOR THAT CLIMATE. THE CONTACT AGREED AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE DRIVES THE BEST AT 45 PSI. THE CONTACT DID NOT PROVIDE TIRE INFORMATION BECAUSE HE STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE NOT THE ISSUE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 9,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,950.
I HAVE A 2006 X RUNNER WITH 14000 MILES ON TIRES. TIRE STARTED CRACKING AND CHUNKS COMING OUT OF TREAD. WENT TO THREE FIRESTONE DEALERS. 1ST SAID NO PROBLEM WOULD REPLACE FOR 1200. 2ND DID NOT HAVE TIME YOU LOOK AT THEM. 3RD SAID THE TIRE NEEDED TO COME OF THE TRUCK THERE WAS A PROBLEM. HE PULLED OVER AND NOTICED A BLOW OUT ON THE REAR DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND CRACKS ON THE SIDEWALL. AS OF AUGUST 16, 2007, THE DEALER HAS NOT INSPECTED THE TIRE. THERE IS A RECALL FOR THE TIRE BEAD (NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 06V061000), HOWEVER, THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNAWARE OF ANY RECALL. THE CONTACT FELT THAT HIS VEHICLE SHOULD BE INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND SUBMITTED COMPLAINT NUMBER 918236 TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 15,900.
THE WARNING LIGHT FOR LOW TIRE PRESSURE KEEPS COMING ON AND THE DEALER CANNOT FIX IT AND SIMPLY PUTS MORE AIR INTO THE TIRES. I HAVE CHECKED THE TIRE PRESSURE ACCORDING TO THE LABEL ON THE INSIDE OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE DOOR AND CANNOT DETERMINE IF ANY TIRES HAVE LOW PRESSURE. THIS WARNING LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON AGAIN AND AGAIN. THIS MUST BE A FAULTY VALVE OR A FAULTY TIRE PRESSURE SYSTEM.

THE CONTACT WAS UNCERTAIN OF THE LOCATION OF THE TIRE ON THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHENEVER THE VEHICLE WAS IN OPERATION. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON SIX SEPARATE OCCASIONS FOR THE IDENTICAL FAILURES WHICH THERE WERE NO RESOLUTIONS. THE FAILURES CONTINUED TO OCCUR. ALSO, THERE WAS A REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRE RIMS. IN ADDITION, THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE EXPLODED WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO TRAVEL UNCONTROLLABLY. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO GAIN CONTROL WITH NO INJURIES. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 200. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I JUST RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2005 TOYOTA TACOMA X-RUNNER THAT HAS BRIDGESTONE POTENZA RE050A TIRES ON IT. I HAVE BEEN READING SOME FORUMS AND TALKED TO THE PREVIOUS OWNER LATELY AND I AM UNDER THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THESE TIRES HAVE BEEN CRACKING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE TIRES ARE GETTING REPLACED BY FIRESTONE DEALERS UNDER A DEFECT WARRANTY. I HAVE ALREADY BEEN DIRECTED TO CALL AN 800 NUMBER ON THE ISSUE (WHICH I CALLED) AND THEY ACTED/SAID THAT THEY HAVE NOT HEARD OF THIS ISSUE AND TOLD ME TO GO TO A BIDGESTONE/FIRESTONE DEALER. I WENT TO A DEALER IN TOWN AND THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO A FIRESTONE RETAILER. I'VE BEEN GOING ON THIS BIG RUN AROUND NOW FOR ABOUT A MONTH. THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF CONTROVERSY ON THIS ISSUE AND I AM CONTACTING YOU TO TRY TO GET HEADED IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION OF SOLVING THIS ISSUE. I OWN A 2006 TOYOTA TACOMA WITH 2700 MILES, UPON SEEING (2) OF MY TIRES WITH LARGE BULGES ON THE EXTERIOR SIDEWALLS I TOOK MY TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND ASKED THAT THE DEFECTIVE TIRES BE REPLACED UNDER THE WARRANTY. THE DEALERSHIP REFUSED AND I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING CONCERNING MY TIRES. UPON TAKING MY TRUCK TO A FIRESTONE DEALER(THE TIRES IN QUESTION ARE FIRESTONE) I WAS TOLD BY FIRESTONE MANAGEMENT THAT THESE TIRES WHERE OBVIOUSLY DAMAGED BY IMPROPER INSTALLATION. UPON TEARING THE TIRE DOWN THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY THE LARGE CUTS IN THE BEADS. AFTER CALLING THE DEALERSHIP THEY STILL REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING. THESE TIRES AND TRUCK ARE THE SUBJECT OF A TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL (NHTSA CAMPAIGN # 06V-061).THE RECALL STATES THAT IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL TRUCK WITHOUT INSPECTING FIRST, THIS WAS NOT DONE. IT STATES THAT TOYOTA WOULD CONTACT OWNERS, THIS WAS NOT DONE. IT STATES THAT UPON RETURNING SAID TRUCK THAT ALL TIRES WOULD BE REMOVED AND INSPECTED, BAD TIRES WOULD BE REPLACED @ TOYOTAS EXPENSE,NON OF THIS WAS DONE. INSTEAD I WAS ACCUSED OF DAMAGING THE TIRES BY HITTING CURBS YET FIRESTONE AND GOODYEAR CANNOT FIND ANY SUCH EVIDENCE (BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED AND DOES NOT EXIST). THE SERVICE MANAGER THEN OFFERED TO WORK WITH ME ON REPLACEMENT TIRES.(THERE GOING TO SELL ME REPLACEMENT TIRES? DAMAGED BY TOYOTA???) I WAS ALSO TOLD OVER THE PHONE BY TOYOTA THAT BECAUSE IT WAS A TIRE PROBLEM THAT I COULD NOT CLAIM THIS TRUCK WAS A LEMON, IT WAS A DEALERSHIP PROBLEM. THIS WAS AND IS A BASELESS LIE. THESE TIRES WERE DAMAGED BY TOYOTA AT THE TOYOTA FACTORY UPON INSTALLATION AS NOTED IN THE TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL. I CURRENTLY AS OF FRIDAY HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT I HAVE NO RECOURSE BUT TO WAIT NO MORE THAN 2 BUSINESS DAYS FOR SOMEONE TO CONTACT ME, MAYBE IN 4 DAYS?? WHILE I DRIVE AROUND IN AN UNSAFE TRUCK, OR HAVE NO TRUCK AND NO WAY TO EARN A LIVING(I NEED A TRUCK THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT ONE)*JB
