FRAME RUST 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. *TR
SAME PROBLEM AS CURRENT ACTION #PE09049. FRAME MEMBER HOLDING SPARE TIRE IN 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA ROTTED AWAY. SPARE TIRE APPEARED TO BE HANGING LOW WHILE TRUCK WAS PARKED IN THE DRIVEWAY. I WENT TO INVESTIGATE AND WHEN I SHOOK TIRE TO ATTEMPT TO DETERMINE CAUSE THE SPARE TIRE CAME CRASHING TO THE GROUND, STILL ATTACHED TO PART OF THE FRAME. BROUGHT TRUCK TO TOYOTA DEALER THE NEXT DAY TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE AND THEY NOTIFIED ME THAT THE WHOLE FRAME WAS RUSTED AND IN NEED OF REPLACEMENT, AND UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THAT IS DONE. CONTACTED TOYOTA'S NATIONAL OFFICE, AND THEY ADVISED ME THAT AT THIS TIME THERE IS NO ACTION TO BE TAKEN ON THE TUNDRA, BUT ADVISED ME THAT THEY HAD RECEIVED MANY COMPLAINTS ON THE SAME ISSUE, AND FURTHER EXPLAINED THAT THE SAME ISSUE EXISTED IN EARLIER MODEL YEAR TACOMAS. THEY EXPLAINED THAT IS CURRENTLY UNDER EXECUTIVE REVIEW AND IF ANY FURTHER ACTION WAS TAKEN IN THE FUTURE I WOULD BE NOTIFIED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE DRIVER-SIDE REAR SPRING FELL THROUGH THE FRAME BECAUSE OF CORROSION . HE CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND WAS ADVISED THEY WERE INVESTIGATING THE FAILURE. HE WAS WAITING FOR A RESPONSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 119,200.
THIS IS A FOLLOW UP CONSUMER SENT ADDITIONAL INFORMATION 10/19/09. *NJ ACCORDING TO THE TECHNICIAN'S WORK ORDER, THE REAR PERCHES AND REAR TIRE CARRIER WERE ROTTED AND IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT THE VEHICLE NOT BE DRIVEN. UPDATED VOQ 10/20/09 *JB CONSUMER WANTS TO KNOW ABOUT RECALL FOR SPARE TIRE ON THE TUNDRA. 12/15/09 *NJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE FRAME ON THE VEHICLE HAS SEVERE RUST. UPDATED 12/18/09 THE CONSUMER STATED HE STILL HAS NOT HEARD FROM TOYOTA. THE CONSUMER STATED HE HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY AN AUTHORIZED TOYOTA DEALER AS REQUESTED. UPDATED 03/29/10
I HAD A BRAKE LINE FAILURE ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA, THE REAR BRAKE LINE RIGHT ABOVE THE CROSS MEMBER BLEW. I TRIED TO BRAKE HARD FOR A PEDESTRIAN AND THE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR, LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO AVOID HIM. I WAS CLOSE TO MY MECHANIC SO I JUST LIMPED IT THERE WITH THE E-BRAKE. *TR

I OWN AND OPERATE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA ACCESS CAB TRUCK , IT WAS PURCHASED FOR IT'S HIGH TOWING CAPACITY FOR IT'S SIZE AND BUILD QUALITY. RECENTLY I BECAME AWARE OF RUST ON THE REAR FRAME SEVERE ENOUGH TO WARRANT REMOVING MY SPARE TIRE FOR SAFETY AND ALSO TO CAUSE ME DISCOMFORT WITH THE SAFETY AND SECURITY OF THE FRAME FOR THE TOWING WHICH THE TRUCK WAS PURCHASED FOR. UPON CLOSER INSPECTION I HAVE FOUND THE BRAKE TUBING TO BE VERY CORRODED AS WELL AS MUCH OF THE FRONT STEERING AND SUSPENSION SYSTEM. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND IT IS RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE I CANNOT GET A NEW INSPECTION STICKER. THIS PAST WEEKEND I WAS DRIVING AND THE SPARE TIRE WAS SO BADLY RUSTED IT BROKE LOOSE FROM THE MOUNT AND NEARLY CAUSED ME TO CRASH AS IT JAMMED BENEATH MY VEHICLE. IT THEN BOUNCED BACK AND ALMOST HIT THE CAR BEHIND ME. THIS WAS A VERY NEAR MISS! I HAVE BEEN FIGHTING WITH TOYOTA TO HAVE THEM HELP ME WITH THIS PROBLEM BUT THEY ARE DOING NOTHING. THE VEHICLE SWERVED SOME GOING OVER A HIGHWAY ROAD DIP AT HIGHWAY SPEED WHEN THE SPRING APPARENTLY SEPARATED FROM THE FRAME. THE DRIVER SIDE REAR LEAF SPRING IS CLOSE TO SEPARATING ALSO ON ACCOUNT OF THE SEVERE RUST OF THE VEHICLES FRAME. IT IS SITTING AT A DEALERSHIP IN EAST STOUDSBURG SINCE OCT. 12 AWAITING TOYOTA FIELD REP AND COMPANY TO MAKE SOME KIND OF DECISION. *TR
LET ME ADD MY COMPLAINT TO THE PROBLEM OF 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA FRAME RUSTING PROBLEMS/CONCERNS. EVERY TIME I WASH THE TRUCK MORE AND MORE PIECES OF RUST SHOW UP UNDER THE VEHICLE. I JUST RECENTLY TRADED IN MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA LIMITED AND GOT $8200 TRADE FOR IT. THE VEHICLE WAS IN MINT SHAPE WITH ONLY 74,000 MILES ON IT. I HAVE PICTURES ETC...I JUST TRADED IT FOR A 2009 COROLLA S. THE FRAME WAS SO ROTTED I DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE IN TRADING IT IN. IT WAS JUST FALLING OFF IN CLUMPS OF RUST. THE BRAKE LINES AND BRAKES WORRIED ME TO MUCH AND WAS A SAFETY CONCERN. THE RECALL SHOULD HAVE BEEN WHEN THE TACOMAS HAD THEIR RECALL. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE RUST ID STILL HAVE THAT TRUCK. EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE FRAME OF MY TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS LED TO ME HAVING TO REPLACE MY CALIPERS ON MY FRONT BRAKES, A CORRODED PARKING BRAKE AND BOTH FRONT TIE RODS. AFTER SEEING THE REPORT ON MY LOCAL NEWS, I AM VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY OF MYSELF AND MY FAMILY. *TR

PRIOR TO THE INSPECTION WHILE DRIVING HE HEARD A CLINGING SOUND FROM UNDER THE DRIVER SIDE FRONT SEAT. THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 122,000.
I READ TODAY THAT THE NHTSA IS INVESTIGATING 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRAS FOR SEVERE FRAME CORROSION. I HAVE A 2000 TUNDRA THAT HAS SEVERE FRAME CORROSION. THE TRUCK HAS 215,000 MILES (ALL OF IT IN WISCONSIN). I JUST WANTED TO ADD MY NAME TO THE LIST. *TR DOUG SABATKE MONTICELLO WISCONSIN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. DURING VEHICLE INSPECTION A MECHANIC AND A TECHNICIAN FROM THE DEALER CONCLUDED THAT THE FRAME HAD SEVERE CORROSION. HOWEVER NO REPAIRS WERE MADE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 98000. THE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH HE NOTICED THAT THE CAP BEGAN TO RUB AGAINST THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER EXAMINING THE VEHICLE THE HE NOTICED THAT THE FRAME WAS CRACKED IN HALF. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. DRIVERS SIDE FRONT BRAKE LINE RUPTURE WHEN PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED DUE TO HEAVY CORROSION/OXIDATION. FRONT CROSS MEMBER BROKE OFF FROM FRAME DUE TO HEAVY RUST AND/OR CORROSION. I WELDED CROSS MEMBER BACK TO FRAME AND REPLACED BRAKE LINE. SPARE TIRE SEEMS CLOSE TO BREAKING OFF AS WITH MANY OTHER COMPONENTS DUE TO RUST. 1. MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SRT HAS SERIOUS UNDERCARRIAGE RUST, AND LARGE PIECES OF METAL ARE BEGINNING TO FALL FROM THE FRAME. THE MAIN BEAMS OF THE FRAME ARE BEGINNING TOO DETERIORATE, ALSO THE BRAKE LINES ARE CORRODED AND BRAKE FLUID IS BEGINNING TO SEEP THROUGH THE LINES. 2. RUSTED PIECES OF METAL RANDOMLY FALL FROM VEHICLE, AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE OR SERIOUSLY INJURE OTHER DRIVERS ON THE ROAD. THE BRAKE LINES COULD RUPTURE FROM THE SEVERE DETERIORATION AND LEAD TO AN ACCIDENT. 3. CURRENTLY I AM NOT DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL I GET NEW BRAKE LINES, BUT THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO THE FRAME OF THE VEHICLE EXCEPT RECALLING THE TRUCK. I HAVE A TOYOTA TUNDRA 2000 WITH APPROXIMATELY 90,000 MILES. IT IS SUFFERING MASSIVE FRAME RUST, ESPECIALLY ON THE DIFFERENTIAL AND WELD POINTS. THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF UNKNOWN TO US SOMETIME LAST YEAR (2009). THE FRAME IS A DISASTER IN THE MAKING. 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA RUST ISSUES. CRACKED FRAME DUE TO EXCESSIVE RUST, BOTH CAB MOUNTS ARE RUSTED COMPLETELY, AND COLLAPSED. CAB IS NOW RESTING ON BED. CROSS MEMBERS ARE RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH. HAD TO REMOVE SPARE TIRE SO IT WOULDN'T FALL FROM THE TRUCK. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT HAS A RUSTED OUT AND CRACKED REAR CROSS MEMBER IN THE FRAME. THE FRAME MEMBER HOLDS THE SPARE TIRE IN PLACE AND WHILE CHANGING REAR SHOCKS AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER I NOTICED HOW RUSTED THE CROSS MEMBER AND THE REST OF THE FRAME IS, WHAT IS LEFT OF THE CROSS MEMBER IS CRACKING SO I NO LONGER HAVE THE TIRE UNDER THE TRUCK. A MECHANIC VERIFIED THIS WHILE HE WAS UNDER THE TRUCK REPLACING THE POWER STEERING RACK THAT ALSO RUSTED OUT .MY WIFE LOST THE POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING THE TRUCK. THE MECHANIC TOLD ME HE HAD NEVER SEEN THE POWER STEERING RACK RUST OUT OR THAT MUCH RUST ON THE FRAME OF A TRUCK WITH 88,000 ON IT AND THAT THE FRAME WOULD HAVE TO BE WELDED TO MAKE IT RIGHT. I HAVE FILED A CLAIM WITH TOYOTA ( CLAIM # 0910135009 ) AND WAS TOLD THEY ARE LOOKING IN TO IT. FROM WHAT I'VE HERD AND READ IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WITH THIS PROBLEM.I WOULD HATE TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF SOMEONE LOST THEIR SPARE TIRE WHILE GOING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA SR5 ACCESS CAB 4WD PICK UP THAT HAS 131,000 MILES. FAILED THE STATE SAFETY INSPECTION DUE TO A RUSTED OUT CROSSMEMBER IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. IT WAS ALSO POINTED OUT TO ME THE POOR CONDITION OF THE FRAME IN MANY OTHER AREAS. IT IS OBVIOUS TOYOTA HAS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ON THEIR HANDS WITH FRAME ROT. THE TACOMA'S PROVED THAT. WHY AREN'T THEY INCLUDING THESE TUNDRA'S WITH THE SAME ISSUES? I DO HAVE A SMALL CHILD THAT RIDES IN THE VEHICLE SO I'M VERY CONCERNED. *TR
I RECENTLY NOTICED EXTENSIVE FRAME RUST ON MY TOYOTA TUNDRA. ON SEPTEMBER 28, 2009, I TOOK IT TO THE TOYOTA DEALER FOR A FRAME INSPECTION. THE INSPECTION FOUND SIGNIFICANT RUST AND AS A RESULT OF THE INSPECTION, THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT SINCE THERE HAD BEEN NO RECALL PROGRAM OR OTHER ACTION BY TOYOTA. THE DEALER DID TELL ME THAT TOYOTA DID ESTABLISH A PROGRAM FOR THE TACOMA. IN FACT, THE DEALER USED A WORKSHEET FORM THE TACOMA PROGRAM TO NOTE THE LOCATION AND EXTENT OF CORROSION. ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2009, I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE ABOUT THE PROBLEM BUT THEY DID NOT OFFER ANY RELIEF OR REMEDY. I WAS GIVEN A CASE NUMBER OF 0909141286 AND TOLD THAT A CASE MANAGER WOULD CALL ME. ON SEPTEMBER 30, 2009, A TOYOTA CASE MANAGER CALLED ME BUT SAID AT THIS TIME THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO. I WAS TOLD THAT TOYOTA HAD RECEIVED SIMILAR COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER OWNERS AND WAS INVESTIGATING THE ISSUE. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS NOTHING IN PLACE TO ASSIST ME WITH MY PROBLEM, EVEN THOUGH A DEALER HAD ALREADY INSPECTED MY VEHICLE AND DECLARED THAT IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE DUE TO THE RUST PROBLEM. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE IS NO DATE BY WHICH THE TOYOTA INVESTIGATION WILL BE COMPLETED AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY CAN DO FOR ME IN THE MEANTIME. I NEED MY TRUCK FOR TRANSPORTATION NOW. I AM REQUESTING THE ASSISTANCE OF THE NHTSA TO COMPEL TOYOTA TO PROVIDE A REMEDY TO ME FOR THIS SAFETY DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH SEVERE FRAME RUSTING. MY LOCAL MECHANIC HAS DISCOVERED A THROUGH HOLE IN THE LEFT FRAME RAIL AND A DANGEROUSLY THIN LEFT REAR SPRING SHACKLE SUPPORT. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE HAVING BODY REPAIRS PERFORMED, THE MECHANIC CONCLUDED THAT THE FRAME HAD CORROSION. HE HAS YET TO DETERMINE IF THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRABLE. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 135,000.
I HAVE BEEN AWARE OF PROBLEMS WITH EARLY MODEL TOYOTA TUNDRA FRAME RUST PROBLEMS AND HAVE FOLLOWED WITH INTEREST TOYOTA'S RESPONSE [NONE]HOWEVER, I FEEL OBLIGED TO INFORM YOU THAT ON FRIDAY 25TH THE GAS TANK STRAPS FAILED WHILE DRIVING AND THE GAS TANK FELL OF THE VEHICLE AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO MAKE A TURN SO THE CONSEQUENCES WERE LIMITED. BUT, 30 SECONDS EARLIER AT 55 MPH THIS MOST LIKELY WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A LIMITED CONSEQUENCE SITUATION. *TR UPDATED IVOQ 06/30/10.*JB
I BROUGHT MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA IN TO BE SERVICED AT MY TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. IT WAS DETERMINED THEN TO BE UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THAT THE FRAME IS RUSTED OUT AND THE LEAF SPRING HAS PENETRATED THE TRUCK BED. THIS TRUCK HAS REGULARLY BEEN MAINTAINED AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED. ADDITIONAL RUST PROOFING WAS PURCHASED AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE. OTHER THAN THE RUSTING FRAME, THE VEHICLE WORKS VERY WELL. NOW IT CANNOT BE DRIVEN AND THERE IS NO SUGGESTION THAT IT CAN BE FIXED. I AM AWARE THAT TOYOTA HAS HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE TACOMA MODEL AND THAT TOYOTA HAS REIMBURSED TACOMA OWNERS ONE AND ONE HALF TIMES THE BLUE BOOK VALUE. I AM ALSO AWARE THAT TOYOTA ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA. UNFORTUNATELY, THEY ARE UNRESPONSIVE TO ME. RUSTING FRAME AND CROSS MEMBERS. RUST COMING THROUGH THE BED JUST WHERE IT IS MOUNTED TO THE RUSTY FRAME. BEFORE LONG THE BED LOOKS LIKE IT MIGHT RUST OFF COMPLETELY. THIS IS A TERRIBLE RUST ISSUE. THIS IS MY SECOND 2000 TUNDRA THAT I HAVE OWNED AND IT ALSO HAD TERRIBLE FRAME RUST. *TR
THE FRAME OF MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA IS SEVERELY RUSTED. SO FAR BOTH FRONT END SWAY BARS HAVE FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. OTHER PARTS (SUCH AS THE LEAF SPRINGS) LOOK CLOSE TO FAILURE. THE VEHICLE DID PASS THIS YEARS STATE INSPECTION BUT I WAS WARNED THAT IT MAY BE DIFFICULT TO PASS NEXT YEAR. *TR
I WAS TOLD BY SERVICE TECHNICIAN CHANGING MY OIL THAT I HAD SOME VERY SIGNIFICANT RUST ON THE FRAME OF MY 2000 TUNDRA. I HAVE BEEN FINDING RUST FLAKES ON MY GARAGE FLOOR AND AFTER READING ABOUT PEOPLE HAVING FRAME FAILURES I CONTACTED THE TOYOTA CUSTOMER CENTER TO SEE IF THERE WAS ANY TYPE OF RECALL. THEY TOOK MY INFORMATION AND SPECIFICALLY ASKED IF I HAD HOLES IN THE FRAME? TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE WAS MOST CORDIAL BUT EXPLAINED THAT TOYOTA HAS NOT YET TAKEN ACTION TO ADDRESS HOW THEY MIGHT ASSIST TUNDRA OWNERS WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE SCHEDULED AN INSPECTION FOR MY TUNDRA'S FRAME WITH A TOYOTA DEALER FOR NEXT WEEK. THERE IS RUST ON ENTIRE FRAME AND IT IS VERY RUSTED ON THE SPRINGS AND HOLDERS. EVERY WELDED JOINT HAS FLAKING AND SHOWING SEPARATING LAYERS. I DON'T BELIEVE I WILL BE TOWING OR CARRYING HEAVY WEIGHT TILL I'M ASSURED THE RUST ED PARTS HAVE PROPER INTEGRITY TO SUPPORT WEIGHT AND SPEEDS. I OWN A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK WITH 63,000 MILES. FRAME IS RUSTING OUT..THERE ARE HOLES NEAR THE FRAME SHACKLES THAT ARE RUSTED THROUGH...THIS ALL APPEARED WITHIN A YEAR AND A HALF..CONTACTED LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP AND ALSO LOGGED A CUSTOMER COMPLAINT TO TOYOTA HEADQUARTERS. MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO FRAME RUST. THE STEERING RACK RUSTED THROUGH AND IS NO LONGER ATTACHED TO THE FRAME. I WAS TOLD NOT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE UNTIL IT IS REPAIRED. THE FRAME HAS MANY AREAS THAT ARE IN SIMILAR CONDITION. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA, ACCESS CAB, 4WD TRUCK WITH 160,000 +/- MILES. I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE USED FROM THE ORIGINAL OWNER WHO LIVED IN THE AKRON, OHIO AREA. I HAVE NOTICED SIGNIFICANT SECTION LOSS TO FRAME MEMBERS, CROSS MEMBERS AND CAB SUPPORTS. PRESENTLY, THE FRAME IS COMPLETELY PERFORATED ON THE UNDERNEATH SIDE NEAR THE PASSENGER FRONT DOOR. ADDITIONALLY, THE PASSENGER MIDDLE CAB SUPPORT HAS CORRODED COMPLETELY OFF, THE FRONT DRIVERS CAB SUPPORT HAS RUSTED COMPLETELY AWAY AND THE FRONT BUMPER/IMPACT GUARD HAS COMPLETELY RUSTED OFF. I HAVE CONTACTED THE DEALERSHIP AND CORPORATE HEADQUARTERS TWO SEPARATE TIMES. THEY HAVE RESPONDED PROMPTLY ALL THREE TIMES; HOWEVER, THE ISSUE IS STILL BE INVESTIGATED AT THE "EXECUTIVE LEVEL". ADDITIONALLY, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE ONE OF THE REAR BRAKE LINES AND THE FUEL TANK STRAP DUE TO FAILURE FROM CORROSION. THE VEHICLE IS IN EXCELLENT MECHANICAL SHAPE AND BODY IS NEARLY FLAWLESS. I HAVE PHOTOS AVAILABLE. THE FRAME SEEMS TO BE MOST SEVERELY DETERIORATED AT THE BOXED SECTION NEAR THE TRANSMISSION SUPPORT CROSS MEMBER. UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS (I.E. NOT TOWING/NO PAYLOAD) THIS WOULD LIKELY BE THE POINT IN THE STRUCTURE ASSOCIATED WITH MAXIMUM BENDING. DUE TO THE BOX DESIGN- IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO INSPECT THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF SECTION LOSS; ALTHOUGH, AS PREVIOUSLY STATED THE PASSENGER SIDE RAIL IS COMPLETELY PERFORATED ALONG THE UNDERNEATH SIDE. I CAN ATTEST THAT MY FATHER HAS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH NO DETERIORATION. IT IS UNCLEAR IF TOYOTA USED A DIFFERENT TREATMENT FOR THE LATER MODEL VEHICLES. MOST ALARMING TO ME, IS HOW QUICKLY Y THE CORROSION HAS PROGRESSED. SINCE LAST SEPTEMBER, THE CORROSION HAS PROGRESSED FROM A SURFACE RUST APPEARANCE INTO BUBBLING AND COMPLETE DETERIORATION. *TR

I AM WRITING ON MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA. I JUST NOTICED THE RECALL DUE TO RUST FOUND ON THE REAR FRAME. I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO ALERT YOU RUST FOUND ON THE FRONT SUSPENSION JOINTS. I JUST REPLACED MY FRONT SWAY BAR LINKS DUE TO RUST. THE LINKS SNAPPED OFF AND THIS CAUSED THE TRUCK TO LEAN MORE IN THE TURN OR CAUSE MORE BODY ROLL. THIS I BELIEVE IS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IF YOU NEED TO PERFORM AND EMERGENCY MANEUVER THIS COULD CAUSE THE TRUCK TO LOOSE CONTROL. WHILE I WAS UNDER THE TRUCK REPAIRING THE LINKS I DID NOTICE A LOT OF RUST IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION THAT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD FAIL. THE UPPER CONTROL ARMS HAVE HEAVY AMOUNTS OF RUST. I DID NOT LOOK AT THE SPARE TIRE BRACKET AS MENTION IN THE RECALL BUT I HAVE NOTICE THE RUST IN REAR SECTION OF THE FRAME. THE LOCATION BOTH SHOCKS HAVE HEAVY RUST AT THEIR POINTS OF ATTACHMENT AS WELL AS THE BREAK LINE HOLDERS. I HOPE YOU FIND THIS INFORMATION HELPFUL FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTION. *TR
MY REAR LEFT LEAF SPRING SHACKLE RUSTED OUT AND BROKE ON MY 2000 TUNDRA . I BROUGHT IT TO MY MECHANIC FOR REPAIR AND AS HE WAS REPLACING THE RIGHT SIDE HE CALLED ME TO SHOW A LARGE 6 IN CRACK IN THE FRAME JUST ABOVE WHERE THE TOW HITCH ATTACHES. HARD TO SEE ONCE THE SHACKLE WAS PUT BACK ON. HE TOLD ME THE TRUCK MAY BECOME UNSAFE TO DRIVE AND THAT I CANNOT TOW ANYTHING . HE POINTED OUT, WHERE THE REAR SECTION OF THE FRAME IS FLAKING OFF RUST. *TR
I FOUND HOLES IN THE FRAME OF MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA IN 2007 AND IMMEDIATELY BROUGHT IT TO TOYOTA. THEY SAID IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT TO WATCH IT AND IT WASN'T A BIG ISSUE TO HAVE A LITTLE RUST (THIS WAS DURING THE TACOMA RECALL). SEPT OF 2008 I BROUGHT THE TRUCK IN AGAIN SINCE THE RUST WAS EVEN WORSE THEY SAID AGAIN NOT A BIG ISSUE BUT TO KEEP AN EYE ON IT. IN SEPTEMBER OF 2009 I WAS CHANGING THE OIL AND I SAW THAT THE FRONT SWAY BAR MOUNT HAD TOTALLY RUSTED THROUGH AND HAD FALLEN OFF - IMMEDIATELY CALLED TOYOTA CORP - THEY SAID THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO. MY ISSUE IS THAT THEY HAVE TOLD ME ALL ALONG THAT THIS IS NOT A BIG DEAL! BUT NOW ITS A SAFETY ISSUE ! IT HAS SINCE TAKEN OUT A POWER STEERING LINE AND THERE IS A BRAKE LINE THAT HAS BEEN RUPTURED AS WELL. NOW THAT THE TRUCK IS WORTH NOTHING I WANT TOYOTA TO HELP ME OUT. THEY TOLD ME IT WASN'T AN ISSUE, I BELIEVED THEM, NOW MY TRUCK IS WORTHLESS! AND THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 130000 MILES ON IT! THIS IS NOTHING COMPARED TO ALL MY OTHER TOYOTA TRUCKS... *TR
I NOTICED THE SPARE TIRE DANGLING UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE. WHEN I LOWERED THE TIRE I NOTICED THAT THE ENTIRE CROSS BRACE HAD RUSTED OUT AND LEFT THE SPARE TIRE HELD BY A THIN RUSTED PIECE OF METAL. I REMOVED THE TIRE AND KEEP IT IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK. IF THAT TIRE BROKE AWAY WHILE DRIVING AT 65 MILES AN HOUR, IT COULD EASILY HAVE KILLED SOMEONE. *TR
(1). I PURCHASED A NEW 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA EXTENDED CAB LIMITED AT PRICE TOYOTA IN DELAWARE. IN FEBRUARY 2009 I OBSERVED RUST THROUGH OF BRACKET FROM BED TO FRAME VISIBLE THROUGH REAR WHEEL WELL. REQUESTED THAT MY WIFE REPORT THIS TO LIBERTY TOYOTA IN NJ DURING ROUTINE 5000 MILE OIL CHANGE. SHE WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS "NOT A PROBLEM". (2). IN SEPTEMBER 2009 TRUCK WAS AGAIN TAKEN TO LIBERTY TOYOTA FOR 5000 MILE OIL CHANGE, PURCHASE OF 5 NEW TIRES AND ALIGNMENT. LIBERTY TOYOTA SERVICE TOLD MY WIFE THAT THE TRUCK WAS RUSTED TO THE POINT WHERE THEY COULD NO LONGER ALIGN THE VEHICLE AND NO SERVICE WAS PERFORMED. LIBERTY TOOK PHOTOS OF THE UNDERSIDE OF THE TRUCK AND TRANSMITTED THEM TO TOYOTA. APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS LATER LIBERTY TOLD MY WIFE THAT TOYOTA'S POSITION WAS THAT BECAUSE OF THE AGE AND MILEAGE (9 YEARS AND 110,000 MILES ) THAT THEY WOULD DO NOTHING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. (3). IN LATE SEPTEMBER 2009 I PURCHASED A 2006 TOYOTA TUNDRA CREW CAB 4 DOOR TUNDRA LIMITED AS A REPLACEMENT VEHICLE FOR MY WIFE A TOYOTA RUNNEMEAD, NJ. ON THAT SAME OCCASION THE 2000 TUNDRA WAS PUT ON LIFT AND INSPECTED WITH A POWERFUL LIGHT. OBSERVED VARIOUS RUST THROUGH OF BRACKETS AND AT LEAST ONE FIST SIZED HOLE THROUGH THE FRAME. THIS WAS WITNESSED BY THE TOYOTA RUNNEMEADE SALES PERSON, GENERAL MANAGER, SALES MANAGER, AND SERVICE MANAGER. ALL AGREED THAT THIS WAS WORST CASE OF RUST THEY HAD SEEN, AND WERE OF THE OPINION THAT THE TRUCK WAS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE. (4). IN OCTOBER 2009 I CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND RECEIVED A CASE NUMBER. A FEW DAYS LATER I AGAIN CONTACTED TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THAT "TOYOTA IS STUDYING THE PROBLEM". THIS SOUNDED LIKE A STALL TACTIC AND GAVE ME LITTLE HOPE FOR ANY VOLUNTARY POSITIVE ACTION FROM TOYOTA. AS OF TODAY 11 NOVEMBER 2009 I HAVE HAD NO FURTHER CONTACT FROM TOYOTA. (5). I HAVE PURCHASED OR HELPED PURCHASE 5 TOYOTA TRUCKS FOR MY FAMILY. TOTAL EXPENDITURE APPROXIMATELY $150,000. *TR
MY 2000 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS 5 RUST HOLES IN THE FRAME, WHICH WERE FOUND BY A MECHANIC WHO WAS FIXING A BROKEN SPRING. I AM UNABLE TO GET THIS TRUCK INSPECTED AND IT HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES ON IT! I WAS TOLD BY THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP TO BRING THE TRUCK IN AND THAT DAY A TOYOTA CORPORATION SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE INSPECTED THE TRUCK, TOOK PHOTOS, FILED A REPORT AND SAID IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. TOYOTA CORPORATION PROVIDED ME WITH A RENTAL CAR WHICH THEY WERE PAYING FOR. ONE MONTH LATER THE PERSON FROM TOYOTA CORP. CALLED ME AND TOLD ME I HAD TO RETURN THE RENTAL VEHICLE THAT DAY AND PICK UP MY TRUCK (THAT WAS UNSAFE FOR THE ROAD) OR THEY WERE GOING TO BEGIN CHARGING ME FOR THE RENTAL VEHICLE AND START CHARGING ME STORAGE ON MY TUNDRA. TOYOTA CORPORATION OFFERED ME $2500 TOWARDS A NEW TOYOTA TRUCK DUE TO MY RUSTY TUNDRA. SERIOUSLY!! WHEN ARE THESE TRUCKS GOING TO BE RECALLED AND OWNERS BE OFFERED A REASONABLE COMPENSATION? MY LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME TO HIRE A LAWYER AND HAVE THEM CALL TOYOTA CORPORATION TO REPRESENT ME IN GETTING BOTH A NEW SUSPENSION AND FRAME PUT ON MY TRUCK OR SOME SORT OF SETTLEMENT.
