TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE PARKING THE VEHICLE, THE PARKING BRAKE DID NOT ENGAGE. THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THERE WAS A FUEL LEAK UNDER THE VEHICLE AND THE FRAME WAS SEVERELY RUSTED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE FRAME WAS SEVERELY RUSTED AND NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 09V444000 (STRUCTURE); HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. APPROXIMATELY TWO AND A HALF YEARS LATER, THE CONTACT OBSERVED THAT THE FRAME FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO A DEALER OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 218,572.
TOYOTA TUNDRA CONTINUE TO HAVE CORROSION AND RUST ON FRAME,LAST INSPECTION ON 1/1/12 IN A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THEY CHECK FOR CORROSION AND DID NOT FIND ANY,WHICH IS NOT ACCURATE BECAUSE AS OF 9/1/14 RUST AND A ACTUAL HOLE AND CRACK WAS FOUND BY A CERTIFIED FRAME TECHNICIAN..HE SAID THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT IN YEAR OF 2012 BECAUSE METAL DOES NOT RUST THAT QUICKLY.IT TAKES MORE THAT A COUPLE YEARS TO ACTUALLY CAUSE A HOLE AND CRACKS. TOYOTA JUST DID A VISUAL AND DID NOT LOOK THOROUGHLY , THEY DID NOT WANT TO GO TO THE EXPENSE OF TAKING CARE OF THE PROBLEM LEAVING A UNSAFE VEHICLES ON THE ROADS AND RISKING PEOPLE LIVES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FRAME DEVELOPED HOLES DUE TO CORROSION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN REPAIRED THE SEALANT FOR THE FRAME; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 129,000.
ANY SPEED ABOVE 40MPH PRODUCES A VIOLENT SHAKE/WOBBLE FROM THE FRONT END. GOING DOWN A SLOPE AND /OR APPLYING THE BRAKES MAKES THE PROBLEM WORSE. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 2 YEARS THAT I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE ROTORS, CALIPERS AND PADS AT A CONSIDERABLE COST TO MYSELF. BOTH TIMES THE SYMPTOMS WERE THE SAME AND THE CAUSE WAS THE SAME. THE PLUNGERS ON THE RIGHT FRONT CALIPER STICKS AND CAUSES THE PAD TO MAINTAIN CONTACT WITH THE ROTOR AND OVERHEATING IT CAUSING THE ROTOR TO WARP. THE WARP IN THE ROTOR PRODUCES THE SHAKING WHICH IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE. I DON'T TOW OR HAUL HEAVY LOADS, I DON'T DRIVE EXCESSIVELY FAST NOR DO I USE EXCESSIVE BRAKING, STILL THE PROBLEM RECURS. *TR
THE REAR FRAME AND CROSS MEMBERS ARE SO RUSTY THAT IT IS CAUSING THE BED TO RUST FROM THE FRAME UP. EVERYWHERE THE BED ATTACHES TO THE FRAME IT HAS RUSTED THROUGH. EVENTUALLY THE RUST WILL BE SO BAD THAT THE RUST AROUND THE BOLT HOLES WILL NO LONGER KEEP THE BED ATTACHED TO THE FRAME . THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AND TOYOTA TELLS ME THAT NO RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED FOR THE BEDS OF THE RUSTY TRUCKS. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE TURNING TO ENTER A PARKING SPACE, THE STEERING RACK FRACTURED FROM THE FIREWALL AND WITH AN ABNORMALLY LOUD NOISE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT AFTER THE FAILURE, AN UNKNOWN FLUID LEAKED ALL OVER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO VERIFIED THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY CORROSION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE AND THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH, A LOUD BANGING NOISE WAS HEARD FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER STOPPING THE VEHICLE THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE METAL FUEL TANK STRAP HAD FRACTURED AND WAS MAKING CONTACT WITH THE DRIVE SHAFT. THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER, WHO DISCOVERED SEVERE RUSTING OF THE FRAME. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED IN NOVEMBER OF 2011 AND A CORROSION PROTECTION COMPOUND WAS APPLIED TO THE FRAME BUT IT DID NOT PREVENT THE DEFECT FROM OCCURRING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND NO SOLUTION WAS OFFERED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO VERIFIED THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 170,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO SHIFT GEARS FROM PARK TO DRIVE, THE HOUSING BROKE AWAY FROM THE SHIFT LEVER. AS A RESULT, HE SHIFTER BECAME STUCK IN REVERSE. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT HE WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE BY ENGAGING THE BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE GEAR BOX HOUSING HAD A STRETCH FRACTURE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE WHO DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 137,000.
STEERING RACK ROTTED OUT AND ALL THE POWER STEERING FLUID DRAINED OUT ALMOST INSTANTLY. THANKFULLY I WAS PULLING OUT OF A PARKING SPACE AND NOT ON THE HIGHWAY. I CURRENTLY HAVE EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST, A HOLE IN THE GAS TANK FROM RUST, THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL IS ALMOST ROTTED THREW, THE GAS TANK STRAPS HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPLACED. I AM NOT SURE IF THIS VEHICLE IS EVEN SAFE TO DRIVE ANYMORE. THE DEALER INSPECTS IT REGULARLY FOR THE FRAME RUST BUT THEY HAVE NEVER PROVIDED A FIX. *TR
GAS TANK HAS RUSTED THREW, MAIN CAUSE IS ALL THE RUST FROM THE FRAME DRIPPING ONTO THE TANK AND RUSTING IT OUT. I TOLD THE DEALER IT WAS LEAKING. BUT NO SOLUTION WAS EVER OFFERED. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 TUNDRA SR5 WITH ~65K MILES. THIS MORNING WHEN I TRY TO PULL ON THE DRIVE GEAR SHIFT HANDLE TO MOVE FROM PARK TO REVERSE. THE SHIFT HANDLE SNAPPED OFF UNEXPECTED - BROKE. TOYOTA DEALER WANTS TO CHARGE ~$600.00 TO REMOVE AND REPLACE WITH A USE STEERING COLUMN (IF THE USE CAN BE FOUND), AS THE NEW STEERING COLUMN WILL COST OVER $1K. I BELIEVE THIS IS APPEAR TO BE A FLAWED DESIGN FOR ATTACH THE SHIFT LEVER. THE SHIFT LEVER HANDLE SHOULD BE OUT LIVE THE TUNDRA WITH ONLY ~65K MILES. I NEED HELP TO GET TOYOTA TO COVER THIS DESIGN DEFECT AS THIS COULD RESULT SAFETY AND COSTLY. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC AND LOCATED THE FAILURE AS THE STEERING RACK BEING CORRODED. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE STEERING RACK FAILURE WAS NOT RECALLED AND DENIED ANY ASSISTANCE WITH THE REPAIR. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 128,000.
FRAME RECALL 90M AND A0F I AM GETTING DIFFERENT STORIES FROM TOYOTA DEALERS AND FROM TOYOTA CORPORATE ABOUT THE NUMBER OF YEARS TOYOTA IS WILLING TO INSPECT THE FRAME AND CROSS MEMBER AND COVER THE COST OF REPAIR.

THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V444000 (STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMEBERS: UNDERBODY SHIELDS), BUT WAS ADVISED THAT THE FRAME MOUNTS WERE NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPAIRED AT THE OWNER'S EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 162,052.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRANSMISSION SHIFT LEVER BROKE LOOSE FROM THE COLUMN INTERNALLY AND BROKE INTO SEVERAL PIECES.. THE LEVER WOULD NOT ENGAGE INTO GEAR AND THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE STEERING METAL HOUSING WAS FRACTURED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. I HAVE A 02 TUNDRA SR5 HAVE A SERIOUS PROBLEM W/STEERING COLUMN SHAFT WHEN I TRY TO PUT ON DRIVE THE GEAR SHIFT LEVER BROKE FREE CAUSING UNEXPECTED GEAR SELECT. I HAVE TO REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER IN ORDER TO HAND SELECT THE GEAR THE ALUMINUM SHAFT SUB-ASSY CONTROL BROKE OFF AT THE SCREW ATTACH TO THE COLUMN SUPPORT THIS IS APPEAR TO BE A FLAWED DESIGN FOR ATTACH THE SHIFT LEVER. I HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE HOUSING FOR THE COLUMN SHIFTER AND THEIR SUPPORT. THE OLD PART IS AVAILABLE FOR FURTHER STRESS ANALYSIS / DESIGN MODIFICATION FOR SUBSEQUENCE MODEL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER PREVIOUSLY FOR A REPAIR UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V444000 (STRUCTURE: FRAME AND MEMBERS: UNDERBODY SHIELDS), THE TECHNICIAN INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND ADVISED THAT THE RECALL REPAIR WAS NOT NECESSARY. HE ALSO NOTICED THAT THE FUEL TANK STRAPS EXHIBITED RUST CORROSION AND THEY WERE REPLACED. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED FOR THE MOST RECENT FRAME DEFECT. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 39,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE TIRE AND WHEEL FRACTURED FROM THE VEHICLE CAUSING THE FRONT END TO COLLAPSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE UPPER AND LOWER CONTROL ARMS HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND CAUSED THE WHEEL TO FRACTURE. THERE WERE NO RECALLS ON THE VEHICLE PERTAINING TO THE UPPER CONTROL ARM. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT WAS TRAVELING 30 MPH WHEN HE BEGAN TO SMELL GASOLINE FUMES IN THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT FURTHER INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THAT THE FUEL LINE WAS DRY ROTTEN. THE LEAK HAD CAUSED GASOLINE TO LEAK ONTO THE MANIFOLD AND ALL OVER THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED OF A POTENTIAL FIRE HAZARD. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INSPECTED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 42,500.
TOOK MY 2002 TUNDRA TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER FOR A SECOND TIME TO INSPECT FRAME AFTER BEING TOLD BY AN INDEPENDENT LICENSED MECHANIC THAT MY FRAME WAS PERFORATED/ROTTED, THE REAR END HOUSING WAS LEAKING, THE SPARE TIRE HANGER WAS BROKEN,(TIRE MISSING), ALL HEAT SHIELDS WERE EITHER BROKEN,LOOSE OR MISSING AND FRONT BRAKES WERE IN NEED OF BEING REPLACED AGAIN. FRONT BRAKE ROTORS, PADS AND CALIPERS WERE REPLACED 11/09/07. ALL OF THIS HAD OCCURRED SINCE 05/06/2010 WHEN THE TRUCK WAS LAST ON HIS LIFT. HARR TOYOTA PERFORMED A FRAME INSPECTION AND VERIFIED ALL OF THE ABOVE FAILURES. THEY ALSO DID THE FRAME CROSSMEMBER INSPECTION IN 01/10 AND THE TRUCK PASSED. THEY SPECIFIED THAT THE FRAME FAILURE WAS @LT RAIL/TRANS MT. THEY ALSO SAID THE RT FT SWAY BAR LINK WAS BROKEN, AND NOTICED AN EXHAUST LEAK. THEY DECLARED THAT IN SPITE OF THE FRAME FAILURE IT WAS SAFE TO DRIVE JUST DON'T DO ANY OFFROADING! SO I GUESS THAT HITTING A POTHOLE WOULD NOT BE ADVISED.! THEY TOLD ME THAT THE BRAKES WERE UNSAFE, AND NOT COVERED UNDER ANY RECALL. I AM VERY UPSET AT THE CONDITION/VALUE OF MY TRUCK. I AM ALSO VERY UPSET THAT NHTSA IS LETTING TOYOTA GET AWAY WITH THE "WARRANTY ENHANCEMENT" OF REPLACING THE FRAME ONLY OF THESE TRUCKS. TOYOTA AND ITS DEALERS DENIED THE RUST PROBLEM FOR YEARS. MY PROBLEM STARTED WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY, AND I WAS BLAMED FOR THE FAILURE. IN THE YEARS THAT TOYOTA HAS DENIED A PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA, THE FRAME RUST HAS INFECTED, MOST IF NOT ALL, OF THE TRUCK. BOTH BUMPERS ARE ROTTING OFF. THE GAS TANK HAD TO BE PATCHED (05/2010) BECAUSE IT WAS LEAKING FUEL FROM A RUST SPOT UNDER ONE OF THE SUPPORT STRAPS. TOYOTA WILL REPLACE OTHER COMPROMISED PARTS AT THE OWNERS FULL EXPENSE. IN MY OPINION THEY ARE USING THE FRAME REPLACEMENT TO GENERATE PART SALES AND REPAIR BUSINESS TO HELP DEFER COSTS. NHTSA- PLEASE FORCE A MORE COMPREHENSIVE RECALL! !
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR END HOUSING WAS LEAKING WHICH CAUSED THE TRANSMISSION TO MALFUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE GEAR OIL WAS ADDED TO THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENTIRE FRAME NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 53,900.
NO MAJOR EVENTS BUT THE PAINT BEGAN FALLING OFF MY 2002 TUNDRA IN 2009. I WAS JUST TOLD THE TOP OF THE GAS TANK IS NOW RUSTED OUT AS WELL. $900 TO REPLACE. I HAVE KEPT THIS TRUCK UP WELL. NEVER HAD A GAS TANK RUST OUT IN ANY VEHICLE. *TR
2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. CONSUMER WRITES REGARDING PROBLEMS WITH ACCELERATION *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED AS HE PREPARED TO PULL AWAY FROM A SIDE STREET ONTO A MAJOR ROADWAY, HE REMOVED HIS FOOT FROM THE BRAKE AND PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR. THE VEHICLE MOVED FORWARD AT WHAT HE CONSIDERED IDLE SPEED, BUT DID NOT RESPOND TO HIM PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR. THE CONSUMER PRESSED THE ACCELERATOR REPEATEDLY, BUT THE VEHICLE DID NOT RESPOND. HE THEN OBSERVED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD ILLUMINATED. THE CONSUMER TOOK THE VEHICLE TO HIS MECHANIC WHO INFORMED HIM, THE ACCELERATOR ELECTRONIC RELAY SWITCH WAS BAD. THE COST TO REPLACE THE SWITCH WAS $500.00. THE CONSUMER PAID FOR THE REPAIRS. HOWEVER, MONTHS LATER AS THE CONSUMER PREPARED TO EXIT A SIDE STREET TO MAKE A LEFT TURN ONTO A MAJOR ROADWAY, HE EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE. THE CONSUMER RETURNED TO HIS MECHANIC AND WAS INFORMED THE SAME RELAY SWITCH WAS BAD. THE DEALER WOULD ONLY WARRANT THE PART IF THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED AS WELL. THE DEALER STATED A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY COULD CAUSE THE RELAY SWITCH TO BURN OUT. THE RELAY SWITCH AND THROTTLE BODY WERE REPLACED AT A COST OF $ 1000.00. *JB
2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA RECALLED FOR FRAME RUST ISSUES. TOOK NEARLY 5 MONTHS FOR REPAIRS, EVEN WITH MULTIPLE CALLS TO DEALER AND CORPORATE. VEHICLE NEEDED FURTHER REPAIRS WHEN RETURNED FOR BROKEN RIGHT FRONT STABILIZER BAR. THEN FAILED STICKER INSPECTION BECAUSE OF DRY ROT IN TIRES PRESUMABLY FROM SITTING SO LONG? 1) NHTSA NEEDS TO SET A REASONABLE TIME FRAME FOR VEHICLES TO BE REPAIRED ONCE RECALLED. FIVE MONTHS IS UNACCEPTABLE. (2) NHTSA SHOULD REVIEW WHETHER COMMINGLED OLD RUSTY 'RE-USABLE' PARTS WITH A NEW SOLID FRAME ISN'T IN FACT CREATING ANOTHER ISSUE CAUSING THE OLDER PARTS TO FAIL (THERE ARE MANY REPORTS BY BLOGGERS OF OTHER THINGS BREAKING OR NEEDING REPAIR POST THE FRAME REPLACEMENT . I PERSONALLY FEEL LESS SAFE POST RECALL THAN BEFORE (3) NHTSA SHOULD BE DOING POST RECALL FOLLOW UPS TO ENSURE THAT TOYOTA IS PROPERLY REPAIRING RECALLED VEHICLES, ESPECIALLY TOYOTA'S GIVEN THEIR RECENT HISTORY. THERE ARE REPORTS OUT THERE THAT THINGS LIKE TOW HITCHES ARE NOT BEING REPLACED BECAUSE THEY WERE 'AFTER MARKET' AND IN MY CASE, THE SIDE STEPS WERE SIMPLY THROWN IN THE BACK OF THE TRUCK BECAUSE THEY WERE TOO RUSTY TO RE-INSTALL. THEY ALSO DID NOT REPLACE FRONT AND REAR SHOCKS AND STRUTS WHICH HAVE TO HAVE BEEN COMPROMISED BY THE OTHER RUST ISSUE? AND (4) TOYOTA HAS SOME SEVERE CUSTOMER SERVICE ISSUES THAT IT NEEDS TO ADDRESS. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT NOTICED AN OIL LEAK AFTER PARKING THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD CALL HIM BACK AND DETERMINE IF THEY WOULD ASSIST WITH REPAIRS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 89,000. I NOTICED A LEAK IN THE DIFFERENTIAL OF MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC VERIFIED MY OBSERVATION THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS RUSTED THROUGH. I CONTACTED TWO TOYOTA DEALERS. ONLY ONE WAS RESPONSIVE WITH THE INFORMATION THAT TOYOTA ISN'T GOING TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR. A SEARCH ONLINE REVEALS THAT MY SITUATION IS NOT AN ISOLATED INCIDENT. I AM STUNNED THAT NO GOVERNMENT AGENCY INVOLVED IN SAFETY AND CONSUMER PROTECTION IS ON THIS. THE TRUCK HAS ABOUT 80000 MILES ON IT. THE BODY IS EXCELLENT. THE FRAME IS FAIR AND OF COURSE THE DIFFERENTIAL/REAR AXLE HOUSING IS DUST. I OWN A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND I HAVE HAD APPROXIMATELY FIVE OCCASIONS WHERE I HEARD A CLUNK WHILE DRIVING THE TOYOTA TUNDRA AS IF THE TRANSMISSION WAS SLIPPING DURING THE MONTH OF JULY 2010. ON AUGUST 13, 2010, I WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 75 MPH WHEN I HAD DRIVEN THE TUNDRA APPROXIMATELY 200 MILES, I PULLED OFF OF THE HIGHWAY TO REFILL WITH GASOLINE AND AS I SLOWED DOWN TO THE PUMP, THE TUNDRA BEGAN TO EXCESSIVELY SHAKE AND STALLED. I THEN STARTED THE VEHICLE UP WHICH STARTED WELL AND I CUT IT OFF TO REFILL WITH GASOLINE. ONCE I BEGAN TO TAKE OFF, THE TUNDRA BEGAN TO SHAKE AGAIN AND STALLED, NOT MORE THAN 1/10TH OF A MILE FROM THE PUMP. I STARTED THE VEHICLE AGAIN AND WHEN I PUT THE TUNDRA IN GEAR, THE TUNDRA CONTINUOUSLY STALLED NO MATTER WHETHER IN DRIVE, NEUTRAL OR REVERSE. EVERY TIME I STARTED THE VEHICLE AND PUT IT IN A GEAR, IT WOULD STALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO MY RESIDENCE WHICH WAS APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES. MY FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 89,000 MILES. *TR
I HAVE OWNED A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA 4X4 SINCE 2002. IN JULY OF THIS YEAR I EXPERIENCED A NEAR WRECK WHEN I HYDROPLANED AND WAS UNABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL. WHEN I TRIED TO GAIN CONTROL I FELT AS IF THE TRUCK WAS GOING TO ROLL AND I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE OFF THE HIGHWAY. ALTHOUGH I DID NOT COLLIDE WITH ANYTHING I DID HAVE SOME DAMAGE TO THE REAR AXEL WITH NOISES COMING FROM IT. THE NEXT DAY I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A LOCAL GARAGE TO INSPECT THE VEHICLE AND THEY FOUND NOTHING. NOT STOPPING THERE I CRAWLED UNDER AND I FOUND A BROKEN LINK BOLT ON THE RIGHT FRONT SWAY BAR. UPON INSPECTION OF THE LINK BOLT I FOUND THAT THE LINK HAD RUSTED TO LESS THAN HALF OF IT'S ORIGINAL DIAMETER WHICH LEAD TO ITS FAILURE. TAKING THIS ISSUE UP WITH A TOYOTA DEALER I HAD THEM REPAIR BOTH SIDES OF THE SWAY BAR LINKS. WHEN THE LEFT LINK WAS REMOVED IT TOO WAS FOUND TO BE BROKEN. THE DESIGN OF THE LINKS ARE SUCH THAT WATER AND ROAD SALT CAN SETTLE IN THE BUSHINGS CAUSING THEM TO RUST. THE BROKEN LINKS ARE LIKELY WHY I WAS UNABLE TO REGAIN CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE AND CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE REAR END GEARS AND AXLE. I HAVE HAD THIS VEHICLE IN FOR SAFETY INSPECTIONS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS AND NOTHING WAS FOUND TO BE WRONG. IF PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIANS CAN'T DETECT THIS PROBLEM THAN HOW CAN AN OWNER AND HOW CAN THESE OWNER'S FEEL SAFE WITH THESE UNDETECTABLE PROBLEMS. I LOST THE POWER STEERING, LUCKILY IT HAPPENED IN MY DRIVEWAY. THERE WAS A LINE OF POWER STEERING FLUID DOWN THE DRIVEWAY. I BROUGHT IT TO MY LOCAL AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR PERSON. MY 2002 TUNDRA AND MY SISTERS 2001 TUNDRA HAVE BEEN RECALLED TWICE FOR RUST ISSUES, THE FIRST WAS FOR GAS TANK AND STRAPS, THE SECOND FOR FRAME RUST. WE BROUGHT OUR TRUCKS TO HERB CHAMBERS IN AUBURN MA. FOR THE SECOND TIME WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE FINE. EXCEPTION WAS THEY WANTED ME TO BRING MY 2002 BACK BECAUSE THEY WERE "REPLACING GAS TANK STRAPS IN ALL RECALLS AS A PRECAUTION." THE PROBLEM WITH THIS IS THAT THEY TOLD MY SISTER NO SUCH THING. OUR VEHICLES ARE ONLY 8 YEARS OLD, BOTH GAS FILL DOORS RUSTED SHUT AND WE HAD TO BREAK THEM OPEN TO GET GAS AND THEN REPLACE THE LOCKS, MY BATTERY HOUSING RUSTED AND I ALMOST LOST MY BATTERY. OUR RUNNERS ARE RUSTING, THE SIDE OF MY TRUCK IS RUSTING, WE BOTH FIND RUST LINES ON THE ROAD OR IN THE GARAGE ALONG THE SIDES OF OUR TRUCKS. A BRACKET RUSTED AND SEVERED MY BRAKE LINE WHEN I TOOK A TURN, MY SISTERS POWER STEERING LINE WAS SEVERED BY A RUSTED PART. YET OUR CARS ARE "FINE". I WAS ALSO TOLD THAT "WITH THE TACOMA'S WE LOOKED FOR PERFORATIONS WITH A HAMMER AND A PICK LIKE TOOL BUT WITH THE TUNDRA WE WILL VISUALLY INSPECT FOR PERFORATIONS SO YOU WON'T HAVE TO WAIT LONG." BROUGHT MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA TO A DEALER FOR THE SAFETY RECALL THAT I RECEIVED. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE FRAME WAS OK, AND THE REAR CROSS-MEMBER WAS OK TOO. WELL, I RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE DEALER HAD THE PART FOR ME! I DIDN'T ORDER THE PART OR DID THEY TELL ME THAT THE SPARE TIRE HANGER WAS DEFECTIVE. FRAME HAS CORROSION & PERFORATION. DEALER SAID IT WILL NOT PASS STATE INSPECTION. THIS IS EVEN AFTER THE PHASE ONE & TWO RESOLUTIONS PERFORMED ON THIS TRUCK IN 2010. IN 2011 THE REAR GAS TANK STRAP BROKE. IN 2012 THE SPARE TIRE FELL OFF WHILE ENTERING THE INTERSTATE. THIS CORROSION IS AN ONGOING ISSUE EVER SINCE I BOUGHT IT NEW IN 2002. TOYOTA'S CAMPAIGN IT RESOLVE THIS ISSUE IS NOTHING MORE THAN A BANDAID TO BIDE THEIR TIME FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD. I CONTACTED TOYOTA, 4/2017 AND THEY SAID THE CAMPAIGN TO "FIX" THIS IS OVER. I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA THAT IS LEAKING GAS. INITIALLY I NOTICED A FUEL SMELL WHEN I WALKED BY THE TRUCK WHICH PROGRESSED TO SEEING FUEL ON THE GROUND. IF I PUT TOO MUCH GAS IN THE TRUCK, OVER 1/2 TANK, YOU CAN SEE THE FUEL LEAKING THROUGH THE 4X4 FUEL TANK PROTECTIVE COVER. I HAD THE TRUCK PUT ON A LIFT AND WAS TOLD THAT FUEL WAS LEAKING FROM THE SEAM OF THE TANK. I RECENTLY TOOK MY TRUCK TO TOYOTA IN RESPONSE TO THE RECALL RE:EXCESSIVE FRAME RUST AND MY TRUCK PASSED THAT INSPECTION. I HAVE LESS THAN 51,000 MILES ON THIS TRUCK AND I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE IT ON THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE LIVED IN MA FOR 22 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A FUEL TANK PROBLEM. ON 04/06/10 I TOOK MY TRUCK TO A REQUIRED YEARLY INSPECTION. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON AND THE GARAGE TOLD ME THAT MY VEHICLE HAD FAILED THE EMISSIONS TEST. I HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING OTHER OWNERS REPORTS ONLINE AND HAVE NOTICED THAT MORE PEOPLE ARE REPORTING LEAKING FUEL TANKS. EXTENSIVE RESEARCH INDICATES THAT AFTERMARKET GAS TANKS ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR THIS MODEL/YEAR SO I MUST HAVE TOYOTA EITHER DO THE WORK, OR MINIMALLY, GET THE PART FROM THEM. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE REMEDY WAS TO EXTEND THE WARRANTY FOR SEVEN YEARS OR 90,000 MILES BUT THE CONTACT HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE FOR EIGHT YEARS. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED HIM THAT WITH A RECALL IN EFFECT, BECAUSE THE WARRANTY WAS NO LONGER VALID, THEY WOULD NOT HONOR IT. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 60,300.

I WAS DRIVING IN A LARGE PARKING LOT AT A SPEED NOT MORE THAN A WALK. I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKE PEDAL AND TOUCHED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND THE TRUCK SURGED FORWARD HARD ENOUGH THAT THE THREE PEOPLE IN THE TRUCK WERE THROWN BACK AGAINST THEIR SEATS. THE ACCELERATION WAS SUDDEN AND VIOLENT, AND THE ONLY REASON AN ACCIDENT DID NOT OCCUR WAS THAT THERE WERE NO OTHER VEHICLES OR PEDESTRIANS IN FRONT OF THE TRUCK WHEN THE INCIDENT OCCURRED.
