TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE VEHICLE FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO A FRACTURE ON THE FRAME CAUSED BY EXCESSIVE RUST. THE MANUFACTURER ADVISED THE CONTACT TO SPEAK WITH A DEALER. THE DEALER STATED THAT SINCE THE VEHICLE EXCEEDED ITS WARRANTY THEY WOULD NOT ASSUME ANY RESPONSIBILITY. THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 40,000. TOYOTA TUNDRA 2002 THE LEFT LOWER BALL JOINT BROKE WHILE DRIVING APPROX 30 MPH. THE TRUCK LOST ALL STEERING CONTROL AND VEERED TO THE RIGHT IMMEDIATELY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY MY TRUCK MADE A BAD SOUND FROM THE TRANSMISSION A GEAR GRIND CLUNK NOISE. I PULLED OFF THE FREEWAY ASAP AND PUT IT IN PARK. THERE WAS NO FLUID DRAINING OR ANY THING. WHEN I WENT TO PUT IT IN DRIVE IT WAS HARD TO GO INTO GEAR. BUT IT DROVE OK SO I WENT TO MY APPOINTMENT LESS THAN A MILE AWAY. FROM THERE MY WIFE PICKED ME UP AND WE DID SOME CHRISTMAS STUFF AND GOT BACK TO THE CAR LATER THAN EXPECTED AND I HAD TO DRIVE IT HOME (APROX 5-7 MILES). AT FIRST IT WAS OK THEN CLUNK GRIND JUMP NEUTRAL IN A BAD SPOT ON THE FREEWAY. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT ABOUT ANOTHER MILE TO SAFETY IT JUMPED AGAIN AND NO GEARS. I HAD TO PUSH IT OUT OF HARMS WAY AND JACKED UP MY BACK. I WAS TRYING TO STAY OFF THE OPERATING TABLE FOR MY BACK NOW IF IM ON MY FEET MORE THAN COUPLE OF HOURS I AM BED RIDDEN FROM DAYS TO WEEKS. AT THE BEGINNING OF THE DAY PERFECT VEHICLE WITH 34000 MILES NOW NEEDING A $4500 TRANSMISSION. I CHECKED WITH SOME SHOPS AND A COUPLE OF DEALERS AND THEY ALL SAID THE SAME THING BROKEN MAIN SHAFT, FACTORY DEFECT WEAK MAIN SHAFT. TOYOTA WOULD NOT PAY FOR IT. 2002 VEHICLE. I NOTIFIED TOYOTA THE VEHICLE WAS IN STORAGE IN CALIFORNIA AND WOULD BE STARTED FROM TIME TO TIME TO KEEP MY WARRANTY AS I AM HANDICAPPED AND COULD NOT GET BACK TO IT. NOW THEY HAD NO INFO ON THIS AND I HAD TO PAY TO FIX A 34K MILE TOYOTA FOR A DEFECT AND NOW GET A BACK OPERATION. *TR
2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA FRONT BRAKE SEVERE FRONT END SHIMMY WHEN BRAKING,CAUSED ME TO RUN OFF ROAD INTO GUARD RAIL. TOYOTA REFUSED TO ADMIT TO FRONT BRAKE PROBLEM WHEN IN WARRANTY AND NOW OUT. WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEMS WITH THESE CALIPERS NOT ENOUGH DEATHS OBVIOUSLY TO WARRANT RECALL. *TR
PREMATURE TRANSMISSION FAILURE ON MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP TRUCK. THIS VEHICLE HAD REGULAR MAINTENANCE AND CURRENTLY HAS 67,000 MILES ON IT. THE TRANSMISSION SHOP THAT I TOOK IT TO SAYS THIS PREMATURE FAILURE IS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON 2000 TO 2002 TUNDRAS AND REQUIRES COMPLETE REBUILD OF THE TRANSMISSION. I HAVE NEVER OWNED AN AMERICAN MADE VEHICLE THAT REQUIRED ANY TRANSMISSION WORK UNTIL WELL OVER 100,000 MILES. *TR
THE REAR TRANSAXLE HUB DOES NOT HAVE A BOLT ON COVER, BUT IS WELDED SOLID TO THE AXLE CASTING. I NOTICED OIL ON THE GROUND AND INVESTIGATION REVEALS THE HUB COVER HAS RUSTED THRU, ALLOWING OIL TO RUN OUT. IF ALL OF THE OIL HAD DRAINED OUT AND THE VEHICLE DRIVEN,THE AXLE COULD HAVE SEIZED UP,CAUSING A SERIOUS VEHICLE CRASH AND PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.TOYOTA WAS NOTIFIED VIA LOCAL DEALERSHIP, AND THEY DENIED ANY COVERAGE. BETWEEN THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND THE SAFETY ISSUE,AND THE FACT IT IS NOT REPAIRABLE, MAKES ME WANT TO COMPLAIN. THE LEAK WAS TEMPORARILY PLUGGED WITH EPOXY, BUT HAS RECENTLY FAILED AGAIN. NOVEMBER 23,2013 .CHECKING VARIOUS INTERNET WEB PAGES, THIS APPARENTLY IS A COMMON PROBLEM ACROSS ALL TOYOTA TRUCKS AND MOST YEAR MODELS, NOT JUST TUNDRA.WITH THE FRAME RUST THRU AND CROSS MEMBER RUST THRU RECALL,ALL OF THESE RECALL AREAS ARE WITHIN INCHES OF MY RUST THRU / PERFORATION OF EVEN THINNER SHEET METAL IN A CRITICAL LOCATION. PLEASE REVIEW . *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. AFTER TAKING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED FOR THE BALL JOINT RECALL, THE VEHICLE BEGAN PULLING TO THE RIGHT WHILE DRIVING BETWEEN 25-65 MPH. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE TIRES WERE THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
WHILE DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY I WOULD OCCASIONALLY HEAR A SLIGHT "CLUNK". SOUNDED LIKE IT MIGHT BE THE TRANSMISSION. THIS FIRST OCCURRED AROUND 85K MILES. THEN AGAIN ABOUT A YEAR LATER. AFTER THE SECOND OR THIRD TIME, I TOOK THE CAR A TRANSMISSION SPECIALIST. THEY REPORTED THAT THE OVERDRIVE GEAR BEARING WAS FAILING AND THIS WAS COMMON ON THE EARLY TUNDRAS. APPARENTLY THE NEEDLE BEARING BEGINS TO FALL APART AND EVENTUALLY THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION GOES OUT. REBUILDING THE TRANSMISSION COSTS JUST ABOUT AS MUCH AS REPLACING IT AND THERE WAS ALREADY DAMAGE TO THE GEARS. END RESULT -- I HAD TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION AT 100K MILES. IF THIS IS TRULY A COMMON FAILURE, IT SEEMS THAT TOYOTA PUT THESE TRUCKS ON THE ROAD WITH A TRANSMISSION THAT WASN'T UP TO THE TASK. I RARELY HAUL HEAVY LOADS OR TRAILERS AND CONSIDER MY USE OF THE TRUCK TO BE VERY GENTLE. HARDLY ANYTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE THE EARLY DEMISE OF A TRANSMISSION. *TR
2002 TUNDRA 6 CYLINDER AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WITH 84,900 MILES ON IT HAD TOTAL FAILURE ON I-10 WHILE GOING 70MPH. THE ENGINE CONTINUED TO WORK BUT PUSHING THE GAS PEDDLE DID NOTHING. WE SAFELY PULLED OVER, BUT THE TRUCK WOULD NOT GO FORWARD OR IN REVERSE. I HAD COMPLAINED TO 2 DIFFERENT DEALERS OF A BUMPING FEELING AND OTHER ABNORMALITIES FOR SEVERAL MONTHS, BUT NEITHER DEALER COULD DETECT A PROBLEM. I HAVE MAINTAINED THIS TRUCK AS DIRECTED BY THE MANUFACTURER AND IT IS OTHERWISE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. I HAVE ONLY TOWED A TRAILER ONCE WITH THE TRAILER AND CARGO WEIGHING LESS THAN 2000 LBS. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEMS I COMPLAINED OF TO THE DEALER OCCURRED BEFORE I TOWED THE TRAILER. FORTUNATELY, I HAD THE TOYOTA EXTRACARE EXTENDED WARRANTY (7 YEARS OR 100,000 MILES) WHICH COVERED THE COST OF REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION WITH A RECONDITIONED TRANSMISSION. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE REAR LICENSE PLATE LAMP CAUGHT FIRE WITHOUT THE CONTACT'S KNOWLEDGE. OTHER DRIVERS WAVED DOWN THE CONTACT AND RAN HIM OFF THE ROAD DUE TO THE FIRE IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT STATED THAT IN LESS THAN TWO MINUTES, THE FIRE WOULD HAVE REACHED THE GAS TANK AND RESULTED IN THE COMBUSTION OF THE VEHICLE. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. TOYOTA STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIRS AND THE CONTACT WOULD BE LIABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 102,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA LIMITED EXTENDED CAB 4X4, V-8, HAS A PULSATING BRAKE PEDAL SINCE I TOOK DELIVERY OF IT ON 2/1/02. EVERY YEAR WHEN THE TRUCK WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR THE PA.STATE SAFETY INSPECTION & EMISSION INSPECTION, I COMPLAINED OF THIS PROBLEM AND ON SEVERAL OF MY DEALER INVOICES THIS COMPLAINT IS NOTED. AT ONE POINT I TOOK A TSB,(TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN) INTO THE SERVICE MANAGER AND SHOWED HIM THAT TOYOTA HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT BRAKE PADS,CALIPERS, AND ROTORS ON THE TUNDRA TRUCKS,(2000 THRU 2005).THE ORIGINAL FRONT BRAKE PADS,CALIPERS AND ROTORS WERE TOO SMALL FOR THIS SIZE TRUCK CAUSING THE BRAKES TO HEAT UP AND WARP THE ROTORS. TOYOTA WAS TRYING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BY OFFERING AN UPDATED FRONT BRAKE KIT, WHICH CONSISTED OF LARGER PADS AND CALIPERS. I WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT MY TRUCK ALREADY HAD THIS UPDATED BRAKE KIT INSTALLED. THIS WAS ABSOLUTE LIE ON HIS PART BECAUSE AFTER REVIEWING THE TSB AND LOOKING AT THE PICTURES OF THE OLD STYLE PADS AND CALIPERS VERSES THE UPDATED PADS AND CALIPERS, IT WAS OBVIOUS THAT MY TUNDRA HAD THE OLD STYLE AND TSB WAS DATED 9/12/02 AND MY TRUCK WAS TAKEN DELIVERY OF ON 2/01/02. ON 7/7/08, I TOOK MY TUNDRA TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION AND WAS TOLD BY THE SERVICE MANAGER THAT MY TRUCK NEEDED BRAKE PADS AND NEW ROTORS BECAUSE OF THE PULSATION CAUSED BY ROTORS. HE TOLD ME THAT TOYOTA HAD A PROBLEM WITH THESE BRAKES BECAUSE THEY WERE TO SMALL FOR THIS SIZE TRUCK. MY TOTAL BILL FOR THE PAD,ROTOR,AND INSPECTIONS CAME TO $498.84. WHEN I TOLD THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THE BRAKE TSB ON MY TRUCK THEY SAID IT DID NOT QUALIFY FOR THE TSB AND THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO.. HAVE DOCUMENTED PROOF THAT INDEED MY TRUCK DID QUALIFY FOR THE TSB. I CALLED TOYOTA CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE AND ALL I GOT FROM THEM WAS A LOT NEGATIVE ATTITUDE AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS A DEALER PROBLEM. BASICALLY, THEY TOLD ME TO"GO SCRATCH". THIS BRAKE PROBLEM IS GOING TO LEAD TO HEATED BRAKES THAT WILL NOT STOP THE TRUCK. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT WAS PERFORMING MAINTENANCE ON THE VEHICLE TO REPLACE THE SHOCK ABSORBERS WHEN HE DETECTED THAT THE MAIN FRAME EXHIBITED SEVERE RUST CORROSION. THE CORROSION PROGRESSED OVER A PERIOD OF TIME AND RESULTED IN THINNING AND WARPING OF THE FRAME. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE MANUFACTURER HAS BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT HAD CONCERNS OF THE SAFETY RISK INVOLVED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 92,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
BRAKES WEAR OUT PREMATURELY AND VIBRATE WHEN APPLYING THE BRAKES. NO ACCIDENT, JUST DEFECTIVE MATERIALS OR BAD ENGINEERING THAT SHOULD BE CORRECTED. BRAKES ARE TOO SMALL TO ADEQUATELY STOP THE VEHICLE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL AND PUT LARGER BRAKES IN TO ADEQUATELY STOP THE VEHICLE BEFORE ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. *TR

THE TOYOTA DEALER SAYS THIS IS A PROBLEM DUE TO ME DRIVING HARD ON THE BRAKES. THIS IS FALSE. I AM VERY EASY ON THE TRUCK. NOW SIMULTANEOUSLY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON. THE TOYOTA DEALER SAYS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE COST OF THE PART ALONE IS $1,000.00 ALL THIS AFTER I DEALT WITH A PROBLEM WITH THIS TRUCK IN 2005. BACK THEN, AT 58,000 MILES, THE ENGINE THREW A ROD AND THE ENTIRE ENGINE HAD TO BE REPLACED. IS THIS TRUCK A LEMON OR WHAT? I AM NOT HARD ON MY VEHICLES. I OWN A 1994 HONDA ACCORD THAT HAS 250,000 MILES. I EXPECTED THE SAME FROM TOYOTA. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED IN THE TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHY I AM HAVING TO PAY FOR NEW BRAKES 7,000 MILES AFTER REPLACING THE FRONT BRAKES? WHY IS THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER FAILING? SOMEONE NEEDS TO HOLD TOYOTA ACCOUNTABLE FOR THESE PROBLEMS. TL*- THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA/SR5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH THE LOWER BALL JOINTS SEPARATED FROM THE KNUCKLE, WHICH CAUSED HIM TO CRASH INTO A DITCH. AS A RESULT OF THE CRASH, HE SUSTAINED MODERATE INJURIES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, AND REPAIRED ACCORDING TO RECALL# 05V225000 (SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE CURRENT AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WERE 50,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. HE RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE FOR THE SUSPENSION: FRONT: CONTROL ARM: LOWER BALL JOINT (NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 05V225000). THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE UNABLE TO REPAIR THE RECALL BECAUSE OF AN AFTERMARKET FRONT END LIFT INSTALLED ON THE VEHICLE. AS OF MARCH 21, 200, THE DEALER HAD NOT REPAIRED THE VEHICLE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 48,782 AND THERE HAD BEEN NO FAILURE TO DATE.
LAST YEAR I PURCHASED A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. NOTHING BUT TROUBLE WITH THE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS. BURT TOYOTA, THE DEALERSHIP WHERE IT WAS PURCHASED, ACTS LIKE NOTHING IS WRONG AND WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. NOW, I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH MOST, IF NOT ALL, TUNDRAS. THEY MAKE LARGER ROTORS AND BRAKES FOR THE FRONT AT THE COST OF $2000 WITH LABOR. WHY SHOULD TOYOTA NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SUCH AN CRITICAL PART OF THE VEHICLE? DO WE NEED A FEW DEATHS BEFORE PEOPLE LOOK FURTHER INTO THIS TUNDRA NIGHTMARE? TO DATE, 16 MONTHS, I HAVE SPENT MONEY ON SHOCKS, DRUMS, ROTORS, BRAKE PADS, ALIGNMENTS, TIRES, BALANCING OF TIRES, AND MY TIME SITTING ON MY BUTT WAITING FOR THE WORK TO GET DONE, ONLY TO FIND NOTHING HAS CHANGED. NOW I SEE THE TUNDRA FORMS OF COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME PROBLEMS THAT GO ON FOREVER. WHY IS TOYOTA NOT HELD LIABLE FOR THIS? PLEASE HELP US! *TR

I HAVE HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES ON MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA PULSATING UPON BRAKE APPLICATION SINCE ABOUT 12K MILES I HAVE HAD THE ROTORS TURNED, INSTALLED SLOTTED ROTORS BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK. I AM AT THE END OF MY ROPE. THESE BRAKES SHAKE SO VIOLENTLY THAT THEY ARE STARTING TO SCARE ME TO EVEN USE THE TRUCK. *TR
FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT FAILURE ON 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. I HAVE NOT HAD ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE BALL JOINTS LEADING UP TO THIS EVENT. THEY HAVE BEEN CHECKED OFF IN ROUTINE MAINTANENCE OF THE VEHICLE EVERY 3000-4000 MILES AS BEING IN GOOD CONDITION! FOR THIS REASON AND FOR THE RECALL (SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN 50J LOWER BALL JOINT) THAT WAS ISSUED ON THE SAME EXACT PART THAT FAILED ON MY VEHICLE. AFTER READING THE RECALL I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY THIS SAME PART ON MY TRUCK WAS NOT COVERED WHEN IT APPEARED IN GOOD CONDITION TO THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS, BUT THEN FAILED WHILE DRIVING UNDER NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS? " IN EXTREME CASES, THE FRONT SUSPENSION LOWER BALL JOINT MAY SEPARATE FROM THE KNUCKLE CAUSING A LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, THUS INCREASING A POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH." QUOTED FROM (SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN 50J) THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT FAILED ON MY TRUCK AND I WAS LUCKY THAT I WAS GOING SLOW WHEN IT HAPPENED BECAUSE THE ENTIRE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT END SLAMMED DOWN TO THE TIRE HITTING THE PAVEMENT LOCKING UP THE TIRE PULLING THE AXLE SHAFT OUT OF THE AXLE AND PUSHING THE FENDER INTO THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR! THERE IS NO DOUBT, IF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED AT A HIGHER RATE OF SPEED, THE VEHICLE WOULD HAVE ROLLED CAUSING SERIOUS INJURIES! THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN DRIVEN HARD OR HAS IT GONE OFF ROAD INTO A HOLE, OR THAT ANYTHING, THAT WOULD CAUSE THAT TYPE OF WEAR. FOR THESE REASONS I BELIEVE THAT THIS IS A MANUFACTURER DEFECT OF SOME KIND WHETHER IT WAS THE SCRATCHED SURFACE OF THE BALL PRIOR TO ASSEMBLY AS IN THE RECALL OR SOME OTHER TYPE I DON'T KNOW! TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE COLLAPSED TO THE GROUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE LOWER BALL JOINTS FAILED. THE FAILURE WAS REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V225000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER BALL JOINT). THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE, WHICH WAS ISSUED IN 2005. HE NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER, BUT RECEIVED NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 110,000.

VEHICLE PURCHASED 5/2002. BRAKES PULSATING & VIBRATION WHILE BRAKING HAVE RESURFACED NUMEROUS TIMES, HAD FRONT ROTORS REPLACED AND THEN RESURFACED AGAIN AFTER THE REPLACEMENT, YET THE PULSATING AND VIBRATIONS CONTINUE TO RECUR APPROX 3-6 MILES AFTER ANY REPAIR WORK. PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE REAR DRUM AND FRONT DISCS NOT WORKING COHESIVELY. FRONT DISCS HAVE ALL THE BREAKING BURDEN. NO FAILURES YET OR INJURIES BECAUSE WE ARE SO WORRIED THAT WE BRAKE FAR AHEAD OF TIME TO ENSURE WE STOP ON TIME WITH ALL THE VIBRATION AND SHIMMYING GOING ON. *JB

I HAVE A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH A BRAKING PROBLEM. I HAVE HAD A VIBRATION IN THE TRUCK WHEN BREAKING SINCE WE BOUGHT IT NEW. I BROUGHT THIS PROBLEM TO THE ATTENTION OF THE TWO LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERS, THEY BOTH SAID THAT THERE WASN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKES. I JUST RECENTLY REPLACED THE BRAKES AND HAD THE ROTORS TURNED. THIS DID NOT HELP. IT STILL VIBRATES AND THE BRAKES ARE SPONGY. I AGAIN TALKED TO MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY FINALLY SAID THAT THEY NEW THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES AND IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE TO FIX. OF COURSE THEY TOLD ME THIS AFTER THE WARRANTY RAN OUT. I HAVE SEEN MANY OTHER POSTS ON THIS SAME ISSUE, I BELIEVE AN INVESTIGATION IS IN ORDER.
WHEN APPLYING BRAKES AT SPEEDS ABOVE 50 MPH A SHAKING OCCURS IN THE FRONT BRAKES, STOPPING DISTANCE IS INCREASED AND CONTROLLABILITY IS HARDER TO MAINTAIN. TOOK VEHICLE TO TOYOTA DEALER IN TOWN, AND HE SAID THE BRAKE SYSTEM NEEDED OVERHAULING, AND THAT THERE WERE TWO TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETINS BR004-02 AND BR003-2 DETAILING THE PROBLEM AND FIX. DUE TO THE FACT THAT THE TRUCK WAS OUT OF WARRANTY, IT WOULD COST. *AK
2002 AND 2003 TOYOTA TUNDRA BRAKES WARP EVERY 10,000 MILES. I HAVE OWNED A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA SINCE IT WAS NEW. AT 35,000 MILES, I BEGAN TO EXPERIENCE A BRAKE PROBLEM WITH VIOLENT SHAKING OF THE FRONT END. MY NORMAL MECHANIC TOLD ME THAT IT WAS WARPED FRONT BREAK ROTORS AND THEY WOULD HAVE TO BE GROUND DOWN FLAT. I DID THIS AND THEN EXPERIENCED THE SAME PROBLEM AT APPROXIMATELY 45,000, 55,000 AND 65,000 MILES. I AM NOW NEARING 75,000 MILES AND THE VIBRATION IS STARTING. I ONLY DRIVE ABOUT 10,000 MILES A YEAR AND HAVE HAD HEAVY LOADS ON THE TRUCK ABOUT 5 TIMES IN THE LAST 8 YEARS. MY MECHANIC SHOWED ME A SET OF INSTRUCTIONS THAT MECHANICS HAD FOR UPGRADING TOYOTA TUNDRA BREAKS BECAUSE OF A DESIGN PROBLEM WITH UNDERSIZED FRONT DISC BRAKES AND DRUM BRAKES IN THE BACK AFTER MY LAST BRAKE JOB. I CONTACTED MY TOYOTA DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT BRAKES ARE GENERALLY COVERED AND ARE CONSIDERED ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. HOWEVER, THEY WERE AWARE THAT THE BRAKES ON THE 2002 -2003 TUNDRAS HAD A DESIGN PROBLEM AND DID NOT HOLD UP PROPERLY. THEY CONTINUED THAT THE BRAKES HAD BEEN UPGRADED WITH A LABOR ONLY CHARGE FOR ANYONE WHO CONTACTED THEM WITHIN THE FIRST 3 YEARS OR 36,000 MILES. THEY ALSO STATED THAT THIS BRAKE UPGRADE KIT WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE AS A KIT AND I WOULD HAVE TO PURCHASE THE PARTS SEPARATELY IF I WANTED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THE COST OF THE PARTS IS OVER $2000 WITHOUT LABOR. THE TOYOTA 800 NUMBER TOLD ME I HAD NO OPTIONS BECAUSE BRAKES ARE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE, PERIOD. CURRENTLY, MY ONLY PLAN IS TO CONTINUE TO HAVE MY ROTORS TURNED EVERY 10,000 MILES UNTIL I NEED NEW ONES. HOPEFULLY OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS WILL DO THE SAME OR THEIR SAFETY WILL BE GREATLY COMPROMISED. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE BRAKE SYSTEM HAS A DESIGN FLAW. HE CAN DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL AS HARD AS POSSIBLE BUT THE REAR BRAKES DO NOT ENGAGE. THIS FAILURE CAUSES THE FRONT BRAKES TO OVERWORK AND DAMAGE SEVERAL ROTORS. THE CONTACT CHANGED THE BRAKE PADS FOUR TIMES IN ALMOST FOUR YEARS. THE BRAKES FAIL MORE AT HIGHER SPEEDS (55 MPH) AND IT IS MORE DIFFICULT TO STOP THE VEHICLE WHEN THE ROAD IS WET. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 88,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
CO2 SENSOR. RANDOMLY BREAKS. THERE WAS A RECALL ON CO2 SENSORS SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND BOTH MINE WERE REPLACED AT SEPARATE TIMES (WHEN THEY BOTH WENT OUT). NOW A THIRD CO2 SENSOR (RIGHT REAR) IS BAD AND ACCORDING TO THE DEALER, NOT UNDER A RECALL. FAILURE RESULTS IN "CHECK ENGINE LIGHT." COST $282. *TR
BELOW YOU WILL READ MY COMPLAINT TO MICHELIN ABOUT THE QUALITY. THE SIDEWALL BLEW COMPLETELY OFF THE RIM WHILE TRAVELING AT A LEGAL SPEED OF 70 MPH. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN WITH A PREMIUM TIRE MADE BY THE ABOVE COMPANY. IT ONLY HAD A PUNCTURE WHICH CAUSED IT TO LOSE AIR. THIS WAS VERIFIED BY THE DEALER OF DISCOUNT TIRE IN SANTA FE. HE DID TELL ME THAT NOW TIRES FAIL IMMEDIATELY WHEN THEY LOSE PRESSURE AND BLOW APART. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN! YOU SHOULD AT LEAST BE ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN TO EXAMINE THE TIRE. WITH THIS HAPPENING, THEY ARE EXEMPT FROM REPLACING THE TIRE AS A FAILURE AND GET AWAY WITH SELLING YOU A NEW TIRE PRO RATED!! HOW CONVENIENT!! THESE TIRES WILL KILL SOMEONE IF THEY HAVEN'T ALREADY. AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FAILURE, TRUCK WAS NOT ABUSED, WELL MAINTAINED, TRANS FLUID WAS CHANGED SEVERAL TIMES AND ALWAYS CLEAN. VERY DISSAPPOINTED IN HAVING TO REPLACE. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 30 MILE PER HOUR WHEN MY BRAKE STARTED TO VIBRATE VIOLENTLY. AFTER CAREFULLY INSPECTED, I FOUND THAT THREE STUDS WERE BROKEN, TWO FROM THE FRONT LEFT AND ONE FROM THE FRONT RIGHT. A FRIEND OF MINE, AN AUTO MECHANIC, SAID THAT THE STUDS MIGHT HAVE BEEN BROKEN DUE TO UNEVEN WEAR OF THE ROTORS AND LOOSEN OF THE NUTS. WELL, I HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT MY ROTORS WARPING TOO FAST TO THE DEALER, BUT I WAS TOLD THAT BRAKE SYSTEM IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. I BROUGHT THIS PROBLEM UP SEVERAL TIME, BUT THE SAME THING ANSWER WAS GIVEN TO ME. RECENTLY, I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND TOLD THE SERVICE MANAGER ABOUT THE INCIDENT. THERE I FOUND OUT THAT ALL THE COMPLAINTS I MADE TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WERE NOT DOCUMENTED. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY ONLY DOCUMENTED IF WORK ORDERS WERE WRITTEN. THAT MEANS I HAVE TO PAY THEM TO DOCUMENT. THE MANAGER SAID HE MAY CONSIDERED REPLACING MY BRAKE SYSTEM IF THE PROBLEM WAS DOCUMENTED BEFORE. WHILE MAKING A CALL TO TOYOTA CORPORATION, A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT THERE IS AN UPGRADE BRAKE SYSTEM-CALIPERS, BRAKE PADS, AND OTHER PARTS RELATED TO THE FRONT BRAKE-AVAILABLE FOR FREE OF CHARGE FOR TUNDRAS THAT HAVE HAD BRAKE PROBLEMS. WHEN TAKING THIS PROBLEM TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER, NO ONE SEEMED TO TAKE ANY ACTION. 3 MONTHS LATER, THEY STILL DIDN'T FIX MY CAR. THE SHIFT LEVER BROKE FROM THE STEERING COLUMN WHILE I WAS SHIFTING FROM PARK TO DRIVE. THE METAL SUPPORT SURROUNDING THE STEERING COLUMN BROKE. THE TRUCK WAS TOTALLY DISABLED AND NEEDED TO BE TOWED. THE SHAFT SUB-ASSEMBLY, THE TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY, THE SUPPORT TILT STEERING ASSEMBLY, AND SOME SCREWS, BOLTS AND WASHERS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I ASKED TO SAVE THE OLD PARTS. *NM

THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THERE WAS A SERVICE BULLETIN OUT TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM WHICH CONSISTS OF REPLACING THE CURRENT ROTORS WITH BIGGER ONES, BUT THE REPAIR ONLY APPLIED TO VEHICLES UNDER WARRANTY, THEREFORE NO REPAIRS WERE MADE.

APPROXIMATELY SIX MONTHS LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT THE BRAKES WOULD PULSATE WHEN PRESSURE WAS APPLIED TO THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO THE DEALER AND THEY STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN REPAIRED UNDER RECALL. THE MECHANIC ALSO STATED THAT THE BALL JOINTS AND ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE BALL JOINTS WERE REPAIRED DUE TO A SAFETY RECALL, BUT NOT THE ROTORS. AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE, THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN TO A LOCAL REPAIR SHOP WHERE THE ROTORS AND BRAKE PADS WERE REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER RECALL FOR THE ROTORS; THEREFORE, THEY WERE NOT LIABLE FOR THE REPAIRS. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 86,000.
FRONT BRAKE ROTORS CONTINUALLY WARP ON 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. HAVE HAD ROTORS SURFACED TWO TIMES AND REPLACED PADS THREE TIMES. BROUGHT THIS UP TO DEALER DURING WARRANTY PERIOD AND WAS INFORMED THAT THIS WAS NOT A WARRANTY ISSUE. *TR
MY BRAKES HAVE HAD SQUEALING AND SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. I WAS TOLD IT WAS DIRTY ROTORS AND IT COULDN'T BE FIXED. AT ABOUT 12,000 MILES IT BEGAN TO VIBRATE WHEN BRAKING. I WAS TOLD THE BRAKES WERE SHOWING SOME WEAR, BUT IT WAS NORMAL. AT THE 15K MILE CHECK I AGAIN REPORTED THE VIBRATION. AGAIN I WAS TOLD IT WAS NORMAL WEAR. NOW AT 23,000 MILES I LEARNED OF A TSB ISSUED FOR THE VIBRATION PROBLEM ON MY VEHICLE. WHEN I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER I WAS TOLD I NEED A BRAKE JOB, BUT THE TSB ONLY COVERS VEHICLES UNDER 36,000M AND 3 EARS. MY VEHICLE IS OVER 3 YEARS SO I AM TOLD THE TSB DOES NOT APPLY. *JB
THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT OF OUR NEW TOYOTA TUNDRA TRUCK TURNED ON. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION/REPAIR/REPLACEMENT. ITS REPRESENTATIVE WROTE IN ITS EVALUATION THAT MY SON HAD ABUSED ITS USE AND DID NOT REPAIR/REPLACE THE PART. ONE EVENING, WHILE MY SON AND HIS GIRLFRIEND WERE ON THEIR WAY TO A CLASS FIELD TRIP, THE LEFT LOWER BALL JOINT OF THE TRUCK BROKE OFF WHILE TRAVELING WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT ON A PUBLIC ROAD CAUSING THE LEFT FRONT TIRE TO COME OFF. TRAFFIC STOPPED BEHIND AND ALLOWED MY SON TO MANEUVER IT SAFELY ON THREE TIRES TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE THE TRUCK FLIPPED ON ITS LEFT SIDE. MY SON AND HIS GIRLFRIEND WERE VERY FORTUNATE TO SURVIVE THIS HORRIBLE ACCIDENT WITH MODERATE INJURIES. SOME WITNESSES STOPPED TO HELP THEM OUT OF THE TRUCK. THE PARAMEDICS AND THE SHERIFF CAME TO THE SCENE AND HAD OUR TRUCK TOWED TO THEIR IMPOUND FACILITY. WE TOWED OUR TRUCK FROM THE IMPOUND GARAGE TO A STORAGE FACILITY. MY SON FILED A COMPLAINT WITH THE BUREAU OF AUTO REPAIR AND ONE OF THEIR TECHNICIANS CAME TO THOROUGHLY INSPECT THE TRUCK FOR ABOUT A WEEK AND INFORMED US OF AN IMPENDING RECALL ON THE LOWER BALL JOINT. THAT SAME WEEK, WE GOT A RECALL NOTICE IN THE MAIL FROM TOYOTA CORPORATION REGARDING THE DEFECTIVE LOWER BALL JOINT. ABOUT A MONTH AND A HALF LATER, WE TOWED OUR TRUCK AND MET WITH THEIR REPRESENTATIVE AT ONE OF THEIR ORANGE COUNTY DEALERSHIPS TO INSPECT THE DEFECTIVE PART AND THE EXTENT OF DAMAGE TO OUR TRUCK. WE RECEIVED A CALL FROM THEIR CLAIMS DEPARTMENT REGARDING OUR CASE, I CALLED THE PERSON BACK AND LEFT A MESSAGE WITH HIM. I PLACED ANOTHER CALL TO HIM. UP TO NOW NO ACTION HAS BEEN TAKEN BY TOYOTA CORPORATION REGARDING OUR CASE. *TR UPDATED 09/30/08. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA. WHILE RECEIVING AN OIL CHANGE A TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FRAME WAS CORRODED. THERE WAS ALSO A FUEL LEAK ON THE SEAM OF THE FUEL TANK. THE SERVICE AND PARKING BRAKES WERE REPLACED. THE OXYGEN SENSOR FOR THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD TO BE REPLACED TWICE. THE TECHNICIAN CONCLUDED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NON-REPAIRABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
