PURCHASED A TOYOTA TUNDRA BRAND NEW WITH 16 MILES IN AUGUST 2004. SEVERAL WEEKS LATER I NOTICED A HIGH-PITCHED SCRAPING NOISE OCCURRING FROM THE ENGINE. AFTER TWO TRIPS TO THE DEALERSHIP AND NO RESOLUTION THEY CONTACTED TOYOTA IN FLORIDA AND SENT A SOUTHEAST REGIONAL REPRESENTATIVE TO INSPECT. THE NOISE WAS OCCURRING WHEN THE TRUCK SHIFTED INTO OVERDRIVE WHILE DOING APPX. 30 MPH AND 1100 RPMS. LETTING OFF THE GAS CAUSED THE NOISE TO CEASE. GIVING GAS ALSO CAUSED THE NOISE TO CEASE. THE NOISE ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE SPEED WAS MAINTAINED AT 30 MPH. THE TOYOTA REPRESENTATIVE STATED THE HE THOUGHT THE PROBLEM WAS OCCURRING WITH THE TORQUE CONVERTER AND THAT IT WAS SOMETHING THAT I WAS GOING TO HAVE TO LIVE WITH. HE ALSO STATED THAT THIS WAS THE ONLY REPORTED CASE THAT HE WAS AWARE OF. I TOLD HIM I WAS NOT GOING TO PAY $25,000 FOR A VEHICLE THAT WAS MAKING A STRANGE NOISE AND THAT HE COULD EITHER REPLACE THE TRUCK OR ELIMINATE THE NOISE. HE STATED HE WAS NOT GOING TO REPLACE THE TRUCK BUT THAT HE WOULD "CONSIDER" REPLACING THE TRANSMISSION. *JB
WHILE DRIVING TRACKING DEVICE CAME ON AND OFF ON ITS OWN. VEHICLE ACCELERATED UNCONTROLLABLY. CONSUMER DEPRESSED BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER TO STOP. THEN, CONSUMER DROVE THE VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC INFORMED CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DUPLICATED. *AK
DT: THE FRONT END SHIMMIED AND THE OUTSIDE OF THE FRNT TIRE BEGAN TO WEAR. THE DEALER DID WHEEL BALANCE AND ALIGNMENT BU THE SHIMMYING CONTINUED WHEN DRIVING SLOW. HAD THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AT LEAST 3 TIMES BUT THE DEALE R COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH IT. THE BALL JOINT RECALL DID NOT INCLUDE THE CONSUMER'S VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER THE FIRST TIME ON AUG UST 13, 2004.*AK
ORIGINAL OWNERS OF A 2004 TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB 4WD, PURCHASED NEW. WITHIN 3 YEARS, THE WHEELS BEGAN TO CORRODE. REPORT WHEEL CORROSION TO TOYOTA, THEY REPLY NOTHING THEY CAN DO. IN 2007, WITH 25K MILES, TRUCK WAS RECALLED AND HAD BALL JT REPLACED. AT 60K MILES, PARKING BRAKE MECHANISM WAS FROZEN (CORRODED) AT THE REAR WHEELS. AT APPROXIMATELY 90K MILES, FRONT SUSPENSION LEFT SIDE VERTICAL LINK FRACTURED. REPLACED LINK ON BOTH SIDES, AND RIGHT SIDE HAD DETERIORATED AND FAILURE WAS IMMINENT. WHEEL BACKING PLATES ON ALL 4 WHEELS BEGAN CORRODING. REAR BUMPER AND SUPPORT BRACKETS BEGAN TO CORRODE AT 90K MILES. NOVEMBER OF 2014, VEHICLE IS RECALLED FOR INSPECTION OF FRAME. TOYOTA DETERMINES IT DID NOT NEED REPLACING, AND SPRAY SOME TYPE OF COATING ON THE FRAME. IN OCTOBER OF 2019, AT 140K MILES, ONE OF THE TWO FUEL TANK STRAPS FAILS DUE TO CORROSION, FUEL TANK SUSPENDED BY ONE STRAP UNTIL DISCOVERED. JULY OF 2020, DISCOVER REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL COVER LEAKING DUE TO SEVERE CORROSION OF THE AXLE METAL. ATTEMPT TO TRADE IN VEHICLE AT TOYOTA IN OCT OF 2020, AND THEY PROVIDE A VALUE LESS THAN BOOK VALUE DUE TO CORROSION, AND STATE THEY ARE TAKING A RISK AS THE VEHICLE MAY NOT PASS INSPECTION. CALL TOYOTA CUSTOMER SERVICE TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE OR DISCOUNT TO PURCHASE A NEW TRUCK, AS WE HAD NO INTENTION OF SELLING THE TRUCK WE HAVE CARED FOR FOR 16 YRS, WITH ONLY 150K MILES, AND NOW WITH A BAD AXLE MUST BUY ANOTHER TRUCK ASAP IN 2020. THE TRUCK WAS NOT A DAILY DRIVER, WAS NOT DRIVEN FOR A WORK COMMUTE. IT IS AN EXTRA VEHICLE, OUR "NEW" DEPENDABLE VEHICLE FOR FAMILY TRIPS, VACATIONS, COLLEGE, ETC.., AND THE CONDITION AND CARE IS OBVIOUS IN THE PHOTOS. I WOULD NOT EXPECT TOYOTA TO BUY BACK THE VEHICLE, BUT SOME ASSISTANCE COULD BE PROVIDED TO THE OWNERS FORCED TO PURCHASE ANOTHER TRUCK PREMATURELY. OUR TRUCK NEVER TRAILERED OR LAUNCHED A BOAT. RARELY DRIVEN IN SNOW.
SUN ROOF EXPLODED AND GLASS FELL INSIDE OF VEHICLE. ALSO, DAMAGED OUTSIDE OF CAB AND HARD COVER ON BED OF TRUCK. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 79 DEGREES AND THERE WERE NO VEHICLES OR OBSTACKLES AROUND TO HAVE CAUSED THIS PROBLEM.*AK
A WEEK AGO, REAR WINDOW OF 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAD POPPED OUT OF THE VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING ON AN OFF RAMP. I'VE CONTACTED THE TOYOTA COMPANY, BUT ALL THEY OFFERED IS TO REPLACE THE WINDOW, AND I AM LIABLE TO PAY FOR THE LABOR AND RENTAL CAR. I'VE REPEATLY TOLD THE COMPANY REP. IT'S MANUFACTURER'S DEFECT, BUT THEY WOULD NOT ACCEPT IT. NO INJURIES OCCURED (4 PEOPLE IN THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT), BUT PRETTY SHAKEN UP.*AK
THE 2004 TUNDRA IS AVAILABLE WITH A FULLY EXTENDED CAB, WHICH I OWN. THIS MODEL USES A DIFFERENT ELECTRONIC/MECHANICAL MECHANISM TO SHIFT GEARS THAN OTHER MODELS. WITH 1200 MILES ON THE 2004 TUNDRA I REALIZED THERE WAS A PROBLEM IF YOU SHIFT FROM OVERDRIVE TO 3RD GEAR TO SLOW DOWN WHILE GOING DOAN A HILL, THEN SHIFT BACK TO OVERDRIVE, THE TRANSMISSION WILL FAIL TO SWITCH. THERE IS A BUTTON YOU DRPRESS ON THE STEERING SHIFT KNOB THAT ELECTRONICALLY SHIFTS IN AND OUT OF OVERDRIVE. IF THIS BUTTON IS BRIEFLY TAPPED TO SWITCH GEARS, THIS WILL CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION NOT TO SHIFT BACK. INSTEAD, IT WILL REVERSE SO THAT WHEN THE DASH LIGHT SAYS YOU ARE IN OVERDRIVE YOU ACTUALLY ARE IN 3RD GEAR. WHEN THE LIGHT SAYS ARE OUT OF OVERDRIVE YOU ARE IN OVERDRIVE. THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO REPLICATE THIS PROBLEM. THEY CHECKED WITH FACTORY AND THERE WERE NO OTHER INCIDENTS OF THIS. THE DEALER DID NOT KNOW WHY THEY USED A DIFFERENT SHIFTING MECHANISM FROM ONE CAB DESIGN TO THE OTHER (EXTENDED). THE SERVICE REPORT WAS WRITTEN AND STATES THIS CONDITION AS BEING A NORMAL OPERATING CONDITION AT THIS TIME.*AK
HI, I HAVE (5) ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT BF GOODRICH RUGGED TRAIL,(P265/70R16), RADIAL TIRES ON MY 2002 TOYOTA TUNDRA PICKUP TRUCK THAT HAVE 6,700 MILES ON THEM. AT APPROXIMATELY 4,500 MILES THE TIRES STARTED DEVELOPEING CRACKS BETWEEN THE TREAD OF EACH TIRE AND ONLY GOT CONSIDERABLY WORSE WITH PASSING TIME AND MILES. I CONTACTED BF GOODRICH WHICH TOLD ME TO TAKE THE VEHICLE FOR INSPECTION TO A DEALER THAT TOLD ME IT WOULD COST ME ALMOST $200 DOLLARS TO HAVE THE TIRES REPLACED AND THE OTHER DEALER SAID IT WOULD COST WELL OVER TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS FOR REPLACEMENT.THIS SECOND DEALER TOLD ME I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO OPERATE MY VEHICLE WITH THE CURRENT AND DETERIORATING CONDITION OF THESE TIRES. I CALLED BF GOODRICH BACK WITH THE RESULTS OF MY DEALER INSPECTIONS, AND BASICALLY THEY SAID WHAT THE DELALER SAYS, STANDS. THESE TIRES WERE OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE FROM THE BF GOODRICH FACTORY AND I FEEL THAT IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE ONE FAILS, AND BLOWS OUT WHILE I AM TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY. I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANOTHER FIRESTONE ATX SITUATION AFFECTING MY SAFETY OR MY PASSENGERS SAFETY. I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THESE TIRES THAT MAY BE SUBJECTED TO THE SAME TIRE FAILURE RISKS THAT I AM UNDER. THANKS IN ADVANCE, JOHN M. MELNICK. *AK
TAILGATE OPENS UNEXPECTEDLY, FAILS TO LATCH PROPERLY WITHOUT SLAMMING IT. WE HAVE APPROX. 150 OF THESE TRUCKS, SEVERAL HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A SHORTAGE IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM IN HIS VEHICLE. THE FAILURE AFFECTED THE CRUISE CONTROL, DOOR LOCKS, POWER WINDOWS, AND ALL OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS. HE CALLED THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY; THEREFORE, HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REPAIR COSTS. THERE WERE NO RECALLS AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,000.
THE BRAKES ON MY 2004 TOYOTA TUNDRA DOUBLE-CAB DO NOT WORK PROPERLY (AND NEVER HAVE). WHEN YOU PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THE BRAKES MAKE A LOUD NOISE (NOT THE TYPICAL ANTI-LOCK BRAKE NOISE) AND DO NOT STOP EFFECTIVELY. I'VE ALMOST RAN INTO CARS IN FRONT OF ME. I TOOK IT TO STEVINSON TOYOTA, BUT THEY SAID THE BRAKES WERE FINE. THEY WEREN'T. I TOOK IT PEP BOYS AND THEY REPLACED THE PADS & TURNED THE ROTORS. IT IS BETTER, BUT STILL BAD. I THINK I'LL GET RID OF THE TRUCK. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT WITH THIS BRAKE SITUATION ON THE TRUCK MODEL. *TR
BOUGHT MY TRUCK LAST YEAR OFF A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THEY SAID THEY DID A SAFTY INSPECTION ON THE TRUCK, I WAS RECENTLY JUST TOLD I SHOULD HAVE MY FRAME CHECKED, SO I DID, AND THE FRAME DID NOT PASS BUT DO TO THE PREVIOUS OWNER FORGOT TO GET THE FRAME UNDER COATED IT VOIDED OUT GETTING A NEW FRAME, SO I WENT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT I BOUGHT THE TRUCK AT AND ASK THEM WHY THEY SOLD ME A TRUCK THAT HAS A BAD FRAME BUT TOLD ME THAT IT PASSED THEIR SAFTY INSPECTION, THERE ANSWER WAS SOMETIME THOSE THINGS HAPPENS AND THERE'S NOTHING THEY CAN DO. SO MY ISSUE HERE IS I OWE OVER $10.000 ON A TRUCK THAT I WAS TOLD IS IT'S NOT SAFE TO DRIVE, BUT NOBODY WANT TO FIX SOMEONE SCREW UP. I'M WONDERING IF THERE ANY LEAGAL ACTIONS I SHOULD CONSIDER OR IF SOMEBODY CAN HELP ME RESOLVE THIS ISSUE. THE DEALERSHIPS NAME THAT I BOUGHT THE TRUCK FROM IS, SUMMIT TOYOTA OF AKRON, OHIO. THE 2004 DOUBLE CAB TUNDRA DEFROSTER ONLY WORKS ON OUTSIDE AIR, WHEN IN TRAFFIC THE CARBON MONOXIDE COMES INTO THE VEHICLE MAKING IT DANGEROUS AND UNPLEASANT. THERE NEEDS TO BE A SOLUTION TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD WITH RECIRCULATED AIR. I DO NOT ENJOY DRIVING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE WINDSHIELD FOGS UP AND I HAVE TO USE OUTSIDE AIR TO DEFROST. *LA
