2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA QUAD CAB. FRONT END ALIGNMENT PROBLEMS, EXTREME PULLING TO THE LEFT AND RIGHT, CONSISTENT RATTLING IN THE FRONT END. CONTROL ISSUES AT 5 MPH, EXTREME SHIMMERING OVER 65 MPH. RECOMMENDED PARTS BY SERVICE DEPARTMENT KNUCKLE SUB ASSEMBLY, BEARINGS, RING HOLE, SEALS. VEHICLE LOSES POWER, AND STEERING CONTROL, CAUSED ACCIDENT. MANUFACTURER REFUSES TO HONOR WARRANTY AND REPAIR VEHICLE. PROBLEMS BEGAN AT 2000 MILES, TAKEN IN AT 5009 MILES FOR SERVICE AND REPORTED PROBLEM, 4 ATTEMPTS AT REPAIR WITH NO SUCCESS. *NM
I WAS HEADING UP MY CLOSE FRIENDS SNOW COVERED DRIVEWAY IN MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB 4WD. I HAD THE TRUCK ENGAGED IN 4H MODE BECAUSE OF THE SLIGHT SNOW COVER. AS I WAS 2/3 THE WAY UP I HEARD A POP AND LOUD BANG AND THE TRUCK CAME TO A STOP WITH THE REAR WHEELS SPINNING I LET OFF OF THE GAS THEN STARTED TO SLIDE BACKWARDS INTO A TREE AND THEN INTO A DITCH CAUSING CONTACT WITH THE R/F DOOR AND R/F FENDER REMOVING THE MIRROR IN THE PROCESS. UPON REMOVAL OF THE TRUCK FORM THE DITCH I FOUND THAT THE R/F (PASS SIDE)WHEEL WAS LOCKED UP. AT THIS TIME WE WERE MOVING THE TRUCK OFF OF THE ROAD WAY AND THEN THE WHEEL BEGAN TO MOVE AFTER GOING FORWARD AND BACK A FEW TIMES. I TOOK THE TRUCK TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALER WHERE THEY SAID THAT THE TRUCK HAD A BROKEN R/F CV JOINT. THEY HAVE REFUSED TO FIX ANY BODY DAMAGE BUT REPLACED THE AXLE. AFTER THE AXLE WAS FIXED THE DEALER SAID TOYOTA WANTED ME TO PCK UP THE TRUCK AND DRIVE IT UNTIL THEY HAD MADE A DECISION ON THE BODY WORK. I REFUSED TO PICK UP THE TRUCK DUE TO IT NOT HAVING A MIRROR ON ONE SIDE AND I DO NOT FEEL THE DOOR IS SECURED. THE TRUCK HAS 652 ON IT AND THIS WAS ONLY THE 2ND TIME IN 4WD FOR A TOTAL USAGE OF ABOUT 2 MILES. THE DEALER HAS REFUSED TO LET ME HAVE THE PARTS AND SAID THEY WOULD KEEP THEM ASIDE. I PROVIDED THE DEALER WITH A WRITTEN REQUEST TO HOLD THE DAMAGED PARTS FOR 90 DAYS AS OF 12/16/05. *JB
I HAVE A 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA. AT TIMES, IT DOESN'T SHIFT UP PROPERLY AND THE ENGINE REVS UP VERY HIGH, BUT THE TRUCK DOESN'T ACCELERATE. AT TIMES, WHEN I AM COASTING DOWN A HILL, IT WILL SHIFT DOWN, CAUSING THE TRUCK TO SLOW DOWN. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT THE TRANSMISSION IS COMPLETELY ELECTRONIC AND THAT HAPPENS SOMETIMES. I FEEL THAT THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT. LAST WEEK, I WAS TRYING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN AT AN INTERSECTION. I PRESSED THE PEDAL BUT THE TRUCK DIDN'T ACCELERATE. I COULD HAVE BEEN HIT BY AN ONCOMING CAR. I'VE COME TO REALIZE THE THIS IS A DANGEROUS DEFECT, AS WELL. I HOPE EVENTUALLY, THEY ASSES THIS PROBLEM AND ISSUE SOME KIND OF FIX. *JB
2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA DOUBLE CAB, V8. WHEN COLD ENGINE IDLES HIGHER THAN WHAT I WOULD CONSIDER NORMAL. WHEN STOPPED AT STOP LIGHTS AND THE LIKE IN NORMAL DRIVING THE TRANSMISSION WILL JUMP OR KICK SOMETIMES CAUSING VEHICLE TO MOVE FORWARD...ESPECIALLY WHEN A/C IS ON. WHEN CRUISE CONTROL ON IT WILL DOWNSHIFT TO PASSING GEAR AND ACCELERATE WAY MORE THAN NORMAL, TACH GOES TO NEAR REDLINE, WHEN ENCOUNTER THE SLIGHTEST OF GRADES...ALSO HAPPENS WHEN CRUISE IS DISENGAGED TO SLOW AND THEN RESUMED. TRANSMISSION SHIFTS IMPROPERLY WHEN SLOWING DOWN SUCH AS WHEN SLOWING TO MAKE A TURN...WHEN APPLY THE GAS GOING THROUGH THE TURN THE ENGINE WILL REV BEFORE SLIPPING BACK INTO GEAR. I BEGAN NOTICING THESE THINGS IMMEDIATELY AFTER PURCHASING VEHICLE IN NOV. '05. *JB
2005 TOYOTA V8 TUNDRA. BOUGHT NEW IN 2005. WHEN GOING UP HILL/INCLINE WITH CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED, VEHICLE DANGEROUSLY ACCELERATES CAUSING THE TIRES TO LOOSE TRACTION ON WET OR LOOSE SURFACES. I NOTICED THIS PROBLEM SHORTLY AFTER I PURCHASED IT. I NO LONGER USE THE CRUISE CONTROL FEATURE ON MY TUNDRA. I PREVIOUSLY OWNED A 2000 TUNDRA AND THE SAME THING OCCURRED WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL ON THAT VEHICLE. SEEMS TO BE A MAJOR/DANGEROUS PROBLEM WITH THE TUNDRA. *TR
WE OWN "TWO" 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA DOUBLE CABS THAT ARE EQUIPPED THE SAME. BOTH OF THESE VEHICLES EXHIBIT THE SAME SAFTEY ISSUE. THE ISSUE: WHEN DRIVING WITH CRUISE CONTROL "ON" AT SPEEDS OF 70 MPH, ON SLIGHTLY UPHILL TRACK, THE CRUISE CONTROL WILL COMMAND THE VEHICLE TO MAXIMUM THROTTLE, SHIFING THE TRANSMISSION INTO PASSING GEAR. THIS ACTION ON THE 287 HORSEPOWER VEHICLE, CAUSES THE REAR TIRES TO BREAK LOOSE ON WET ROADS AND CAN CAUSE LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, SENDING IT OFF THE ROAD OR INTO A SPIN. BOTH VEHICLES WE OWN EXHIBIT THIS BEHAVIOR AND IT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO TOYOTA CASE # 200510040775. *NM
I WAS DRIVING IN THE LOCAL STREETS, AND WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN AFTER STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY COLLAPSED WITH NO WARNING. I WAS TRAVELING AT MOST 10 MPH. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER SHOWED ANY SIGN OF FAILURE OR NOISE UNTIL THAT DAY. AFTER I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I GOT OUT OF THE VEHICLE TO INSPECT THE CAR AND FOUND THE BALL JOINT IN UPPER CONTROL ARM HAD COMPLETELY TEAR ITSELF APART FROM THE WHEEL HUB. FORTUNATELY FOR ME, NO SERIOUS DAMAGE TO THE CAR OTHER THAN THE FAILED COMPONENTS AND WORN TIRES DUE TO MY HAVING TO DRAG THE CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE TIRE TO PULL OVER TO SAFETY OCCURRED. I WAS NOT INJURED IN THE INCIDENT, BUT HAD I BEEN DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AT THE TIME OF FAILURE, I WOULDN'T BE HERE TYPING THIS. AFTERWARDS, WE HAD AAA TOW THE CAR TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP TO SEE WHETHER TOYOTA WILL TAKE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FAILURE OF ITS PART.*JB
AIRBAG DID NOT DEPLOY IN A SIGNIFICANT FRONTAL IMPACT. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA. EVER SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED, THE SAFETY BELT SENSOR LIGHT HAS BEEN ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE HAD A FAULTY SAFETY BELT SYSTEM. THE RED SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATES WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STARTED AND REMAINS LIT. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY WANTED TO GIVE HIM A COMPUTER MODULE FOR THE SENSOR. THE COMPUTER MODULE WAS NOT REPLACED BECAUSE THE CONTACT WANTED ALL THREE SENSORS REPLACED, NOT JUST THE SAFETY BELT SENSOR. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 22,700 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 5.
WINDOWS ARE VERY LOOSE AND RATTLE EXCESSIVELY. TRUCK HAS BEEN TO DEALER SEVEN TIMES, THEY DID HAVE A BULLETIN ON THE WINDOW REGULATOR AND REPLACED IT BUT IT WAS NOT THE SOURCE OF THE PROBLEM. DEALER GAVE UP ON THE PROBLEM AND SAID IT COULD NOT BE FIXED. *JB
DT: WHEN THE ENGINE IS STARTED COLD IT IDLES VERY HIGH. WHEN TAKING FOOT OFF BRAKE OR PUTTING VEHICLE IN GEAR IT ACCELERATES QUICKLY. NO ACCIDENTS REPORTED. ALSO, NO OTHER PROBLEMS. TAKEN TO DEALER TO INQUIRE ABOUT THIS, DEALER STATED THAT THIS IS NORMAL. IT SEEMED TWICE AS FAST AS A NORMAL VEHICLE IN IDLE. WHEN THE ENGINE IS HOT THIS PROBLEM GOES AWAY. *AK *NM
THE FRAME AND CROSS MEMBERS ARE DETERIORATED TO THE POINT OF BREAKING. THE FRONT DRIVESHAFT AND STEERING LINKAGE IS EXCESSIVELY DETERIORATED. THE BRAKE AND FUEL TANK BRACKETS ARE ALSO DETERIORATED AND ARE FAILING TO SUPPORT ATTACHED COMPONENTS

I JUST SENT THE FOLLOWING EMAIL TO TOYOTA. I HOPE THAT NHTSA CAN FOLLOW UP AS THIS IS VERY CONCERNING: I WAS HORRIFIED BY THE SPANISH SPEAKING TOYOTA TUNDRA COMMERCIAL I JUST SAW. IT IS INCONCEIVABLE THAT TOYOTA WOULD HAVE A COMMERCIAL SHOWING LITTLE CHILDREN CRAWLING UNDER A CAR TO TRY TO GET A BALL OUT FROM UNDER IT. CHILDREN SHLOULD NEVER GO UNDER A CAR, WHETHER IT IS MOVING OR NOT. THEY CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE! THIS IS ABSOLUTELY SHAMEFUL. TOYOTA SHOULD IMMEDIATELY PULL THIS COMMERCIAL. PLEASE DO NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY OF A CHILD OR CHILDREN WHO CRAWL UNDER A CAR AFTER SEEING THIS COMMERCIAL.*AK
I HAD MY 2005 TUNDRA BED LOADED TO THE MAXIMUM ADVERTISED WEIGHT CAPACITY. ONCE I ENTERED THE HWY AND REACHED A SPEED OF 45 THE VEHICLE WENT OUT OF CONTROL. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR MANY YEARS AND HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF CONTROL LIKE THIS. THE VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD AND FLIPPED UPSIDE DOWN. THE CAB HELD UP GREAT AND EVERYONE WAS WEARING THEIR SEATBELT THEREFOR THERE WERE NOT SIGNIFIGANT INJURIES. ATLEAST ONE OF THE TIRES WERE OFF THE RIM BUT I'M NOT SURE IF THIS WAS A RESULT OF THE ACCIDENT OR A CAUSE.
1. FROM A STOP, AUTO TRANSMISSION SLIPPED OUT OF FIRST GEAR. WHILE TRYING TO BACK UP, REVERSE WOULD NOT ENGAGE. 2. WHILE DRIVING, FOURTH GEAR DID NOT ENGAGE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, THEN IT SLIPPED OUT OF THIRD. AS A RESULT, I WAS ALMOST REAR ENDED DUE TO THE LOSS OF POWER. 3. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. ACCORDING TO THEM, THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AND WAS REPLACED. OLD UNIT NOT AVAILABLE.*AK
TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM DOES NOT WORK AS DESIGNED. FOR THE LAST 24,000 MILES THE SYSTEM HAS NOT WORKED AS INTENDED WITH MULTIPLE FAILURES OF MULTIPLE TYPES. INITIAL FAILURES CLUSTERED AROUND THE PRESSURE IN THE SPARE BEING SET AT A DIFFERENT PRESSURE THAN THE DRIVE TIRES. SECONDARY FAILURES CLUSTERED AROUND THE FACT THAT THE DRIVE TIRES HEATED DURING OPERATION AND WERE SUBSEQUENTLY AT A DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE AND THUS PRESSURE THAN THE SPARE. INCLUSION OF THE MONITOR ON THE SPARE SEEMS A DESIGN FLAW. IF THE SPARE IS NEEDED THAN THEIR WILL ALREADY BE A TIRE ON/IN THE VEHICLE SIGNALING TO THE COMPUTER THAT A PRESSURE EVENT HAS OCCURRED. SINCE THE SYSTEM DOES NOT SIGNAL WHICH TIRE IS LOW THE INFORMATION FROM THE SPARE CAN ONLY BE A PROBLEM. THIRD THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITOR LIGHT STARTED BLINKING. DIAGNOSIS WAS A FAILED TPM SENSOR. CONSULTATION AT TOYOTA DEALERSHIP WITH THREE MASTER MECHANICS AND A SERVICE MANAGER ESTABLISHED THIS AS A CHRONIC PROBLEM IN TOYOTAS, ESPECIALLY IF A TIRE IS EVER REPLACED. THEIR PROFESSIONAL RECOMMENDATION WAS A PIECE OF BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE OVER THE LIGHT ON THE DASH. THEY DID OFFER TO GET THE REPLACEMENT SENSOR IN. EVEN WITH THE VIN THEY WERE UNABLE TO ASCERTAIN WHAT PART IT IS THOUGH. TOYOTA HAS TWO DIFFERENT SENSORS FOR THIS VEHICLE AND THERE IS APPARENTLY NO WAY TO DETERMINE THE PROPER PART UNTIL DISASSEMBLY. HAVING A DASH WARNING LIGHT ON FOR THOUSANDS OF MILES DESENSITIZES DRIVES TO IMPORTANT LIGHTS WHEN THEY ILLUMINATE. IF TOYOTA IS UNABLE TO PRODUCE A SYSTEM THAT WORKS PROPERLY THEY SHOULD PROVIDE SOME WAY FOR DEALERS OR OWNERS TO DISABLE THE SYSTEM. UNFORTUNATELY THE DEALERSHIP INDICATES THAT NO SUCH WORK AROUND IS AVAILABLE. *NM
WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEED OF 20-50 MPH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION WOULD INTERMITTENTLY JUMP OUT OF DRIVE INTO NEUTRAL. THIS CONDITION ALMOST CAUSES\D CONSUMER'S VEHICLE TO BE INVOLVED IN A REAR END CRASH. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO THE DEALER ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS. THE FIRST TIME THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONSUMER THAT NOTHING COULD BE FOUND. ON THE SECOND OCCASION THE DEALER REPLACED THE TRANSMISSION.*AK
LONG DELAY BETWEEN DEPRESSING "DRIVE-BY-WIRE" GAS PEDAL AND ENGINE RESPONDING. MY 2005 TOYOTA TUNDRA HAS AN ELECTRONIC GAS PEDAL. IT'S UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR MAY EXPLAIN SOME OF THE CURRENT "SURGING" PEOPLE ARE SEEING IN OTHER TOYOTAS. THIS IS A 100% SOFTWARE PROBLEM (I AM A ELECTRONIC ENGINEER). DESCRIPTION: WHEN THE ENGINE IS AT IDLE, OR EVEN WORSE, WHEN YOU ARE DECELERATING AT IDLE POWER, AND YOU INCREASE THE THROTTLE POSITION OF THE GAS PEDAL, THERE IS A NEARLY 1-SECOND DELAY BEFORE THE ENGINE RESPONDS TO THE THROTTLE INPUT. IF THE DRIVER, NOT SENSING ANY RESPONSE TO THROTTLE, APPLIES MORE AND MORE THROTTLE DURING THAT ONE SECOND DELAY, WHEN THE ENGINE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE FINALLY DOES RESPOND IT WILL IMMEDIATELY GO TO THE HIGHEST THROTTLE SETTING THE DRIVER WAS SELECTING, CAUSING A HUGE LURCHING FORWARD ACTION OF THE VEHICLE. FOR EXAMPLE, IF THE DRIVER APPLIED THROTTLE IN THIS FASHION: 0SEC=5% THROTTLE; 0.25SEC=10% THROTTLE; 0.5 SEC=20% THROTTLE; 0.75SEC=35% THROTTLE; 1.0SEC=50% THROTTLE. THE ENGINE'S ELECTRONIC THROTTLE WILL RESPOND LIKE THIS: 0SEC=0% THROTTLE; 0.25SEC=0% THROTTLE; 0.5 SEC=0% THROTTLE; 0.75SEC=0% THROTTLE; 1.0SEC=50% THROTTLE. CAUSING THE HUGE LURCH AT 1.0 SECOND. THIS HAS BEEN ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHILE CHANGING LANES DURING STOP-AND-GO TRAFFIC IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA. PLEASE NOTE THAT IF I AM RUNNING AT PARTIAL POWER/THROTTLE, THIS BEHAVIOR DOES NOT HAPPEN, AND THE GAS PEDAL RESPONSE IS PROPER. ONLY FROM IDLE OR DECELERATING. I HAVE COMPLAINED NUMEROUS TIMES TO MY TOYOTA DEALER, TO WHICH THE SERVICE MANAGER FINALLY REPLIED TO ME "YOU THINK THE TUNDRA IS BAD... YOU SHOULD TRY DRIVING THE SIENNA! IT'S WORSE!" SO APPARENTLY THE FOLKS AT TOYOTA KNOW ABOUT THIS AND THINK IT'S FUNNY. I CAN DEMONSTRATE THIS DEFECT AT ANY TIME. I HAVE CHANGED MY DRIVING STYLE TO PROTECT ME FROM THE VEHICLE'S DEFECT. *TR

THE FAILURE PERSISTS AND THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE. THE LOWER BALL JOINT WAS ALSO REPLACED. THE POWERTRAIN AND MILEAGE INFORMATION WERE UNKNOWN. THE CONSUMER STATED THE TRUCK IS NOT RUNNING RIGHT, HE FURTHER STATED TOOK TO THE DEALER AND THEY CHECK THE TIRE PRESSURE AND DO AN ALIGNMENT BUT IT DOES NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH BALL JOINT REPLACEMENT. CONSUMER STATES THEY WOULD NOT GIVE HIM COPIES OF THE OTHER INVOICES HE SIGNED.
