THE BUILT IN TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY WHEN USED WITH ANY TRAILER EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRIC BRAKES. IT IS NOT CAPABLE OF CONTROLLING LOADED TRAILERS SAFELY. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS MATTER TO THE ATTENTION OF TOYOTA AND THE MASTER TECHNICIAN AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP SAYS HE UNDERSTANDS THE PROBLEM AND CAN REPRODUCE THE SAFETY ISSUE UNDER TESTING - BUT AT THIS TIME THE MANUFACTURER HAS NO RECOMMENDED SOLUTION IN PLACE TO FIX THIS ISSUE. PLEASE HELP AS IT IS DANGEROUS. DEFECT WAS ALSO EVIDENT ON A SECOND SIMILAR BRAND NEW VEHICLE TAKEN FROM DEALER LOT FOR TESTING AT MY LAST VISIT TO DEALER.
FACTORY INTEGRATED BRAKE CONTROLLER DOES NOT WORK EFFICIENTLY. WITH THE IBC GAIN UP TO 10, THE TRAILER BRAKES ARE NOT ACTIVATED ENOUGH TO SLOW THE VEHICLE IN A NORMAL OR EMERGENCY SITUATION. THE MANUAL OVERRIDE SLIDE BAR BARELY ENGAGES THE TRAILER BRAKES, IT WILL NOT LOCK THE TRAILER BRAKES AS DESIGNED. VEHICLE BRAKES BEGIN TO GET TO HOT TO SLOW BOTH THE TRUCK AND TRAILER COMING DOWN HILLS, EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!
THE CONTROL BRAKING DOES NOT WORKING PROPERLY WHEN TOWING. I HAVE GAINED SET TO HIGHEST LEVEL WHICH IS 10 AND ON A EMPTY 6X10 TOY TRAILER IT WILL NOT LOCK UP. WHEN JUST PRESSING WITH BRAKE DOES NOT WORK AT ALL ONLY HAS LITTLES TENSION WHEN PRESSING THE BRAKE SLIDER MANUALLY. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS
RE: INTEGRATED BREAK CONTROLLER I WANTED TO EXPRESS A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN I HAVE WITH AN ITEM THAT NOW SHIPS WITH THE 2016 TOYOTA 5.7L TUNDRA'S - THE BUILT IN / INTEGRATED BREAK CONTROLLER FOR USE WHEN PULLING TRAILERS/CAMPERS/ETC. IT SEEMS THAT REGARDLESS OF THE POWER SETTING, NO NOTICEABLE POWER IS SUPPLIED TO THE TRAILER BRAKES, EVEN AT IT'S HIGHEST SETTING. IT FEELS LIKE THE TRAILER/CAMPER IS PUSHING THE TRUCK, WHICH CAN BE A SERIOUS ISSUE WHEN STOPPING. THIS WOULD HAPPEN EVERY TIME I WOULD TOW AND I WAS ALWAYS VERY WORRIED ABOUT CAUSING AN ACCIDENT IF I NEEDED TO STOP QUICKLY OR IF THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE NOT IDEA. I'VE NEVER FELT THIS WITH OTHER BREAK CONTROLLERS. IT'S MY UNDERSTANDING TOYOTA HAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THIS AS BEING AN ISSUE YET. AFTER TALKING TO MANY OTHER TUNDRA OWNERS EVERYONE HAS THE SAME ISSUE, I'VE NOT TALKED TO ANYONE THAT HAS A WORKING INTEGRATED BREAK CONTROLLER IN THEIR 2016. I'VE TAKEN OUT MY INTEGRATED BREAK CONTROLLER THAT CAME IN MY 2016 TOYOTA TUNDRA AND REPLACED IT WITH AN AFTER MARKET BRAKE CONTROLLER OUT SO I CAN PROPERTY BRAKE WITH MY CAMPER ATTACHED. FOR NOW MY ISSUE IS RESOLVED, HOWEVER, I AM HOWEVER VERY WORRIED ABOUT OTHERS THAT MIGHT BE USING THE INTEGRATED BREAK CONTROLLER AND THE HUGE POTENTIAL FOR A SERIOUS ACCIDENT BECAUSE THEIR TRAILER OR CAMPER BRAKES ARE NOT WORKING. PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS BEFORE ANY SERIOUS ACCIDENTS HAPPEN. THANKS!
I'M MAKING THIS REPORT DUE TO THE LAME INTEGRATED BRAKE CONTROLLER (IBC) IN MY 2016 TOYOTA TUNDRA. I'VE BEEN TOWING A CAMPER FOR THE PAST 13 YEARS AND I KNOW HOW TO SET UP A BRAKE CONTROLLER (BC) AND MORE IMPORTANTLY I KNOW WHEN THEY ARE WORKING OR NOT. WITH THE IBC, WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL I GET NO FELT BRAKING FROM THE CAMPER EVEN WHEN SET TO THE HIGHEST GAIN SETTING (10) WHICH CONSIDERING THE GENERAL LIGHT WEIGHT OF MY CAMPER (5,000 LBS. LOADED), THE HIGHEST GAIN SETTING SHOULD LOCK UP MY TRAILER BRAKES. THE IBC SETTING FOR MY CAMPER IS ELECTRIC. I TOOK MY TRUCK AND CAMPER TO THE TOYOTA DEALER SO THEY COULD TEST THE CONTROLLER WHILE HOOKED UP. THE TECHNICIAN HOOKED THE TRUCK UP TO A DIAGNOSTIC COMPUTER AND WENT THROUGH ALL THE SETTINGS BOTH STATIC AND ON A TEST DRIVE. THE COMPUTER SHOWED THAT THE BRAKE CONTROLLER WAS WORKING; HOWEVER, EVEN WHEN SET ON THE HIGHEST SETTING, I COULD NOT FEEL THE TRAILER BRAKES KICKING IN. THEIR CONCLUSION WAS IN SPITE OF NOT FEELING THE BRAKES, THAT THE BRAKE CONTROLLER WAS WORKING. TOYOTA SAYS IT'S OKAY, BUT IF I JACK-KNIFE MY CAMPER, I'M THE ONE WHO HAS TO DEAL WITH THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE ACCIDENT. AS THE RESULT OF HAVING ZERO CONFIDENCE IN THE ABILITY OF THE IBC, I ALREADY INSTALLED AN AFTER-MARKET BC (SAFETY CAN'T WAIT FOR A FIX). I BELIEVE THAT PEOPLE WHO ARE TOWING WITH THIS IBC, PARTICULARLY ANYONE TOWING AN EIGHT OR NINE THOUSAND POUND CAMPER IS AT RISK AS WELL AS THE PUBLIC ON OUR ROADWAYS. THE DEALER TOLD ME MY IBC WAS WORKING FINE BECAUSE THE COMPUTER FOUND NO ERRORS OR INCORRECT VOLTAGE LEVELS. WHILE THAT MAY BE TRUE, IT'S A TERRIBLE BC AND NOT SUITABLE FOR A TRUCK THAT'S RATED TO TOW A 10,000 LB. TRAILER. WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO SAY TO A FAMILY THAT GETS WIPED OUT IN AN ACCIDENT? 'WE'RE SORRY ' BUT DON'T LOOK AT US - THE BRAKE CONTROLLER WAS WORKING.'
TOYOTA TUNDRA WITH FRONT BENCH SEAT HAVE NO AIR BAG FOR CENTER PASSENGER.
WHILE BACKING UP, I TAPPED A POLE STICKING OUT OF THE GROUND AND DENT MY PLASTIC BUMPER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE INTO A BODY SHOP WHERE THEY HAD TO ORDER THE BUMPER AND ASSEMBLY. SEVERAL DAYS LATER WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET, THE RIGHT REAR PORTION OF THE BUMPER FELL OFF. WHAT HELD IT IN PLACE WAS THE ELECTRICAL FOR THE BACKUP SENSOR. I ENDED UP USING TAPE TO HOLD THE BUMPER TO THE PICKUP AND WENT BACK TO THE BODY SHOP THE NEXT DAY.AS THE PARTS HAD COME IN. TOYOTA SAID THAT SINCE I BACKED INTO THE POLE THERE WAS NO COVERAGE FOR THE BRACKET OR BUMPER EVEN THOUGH THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE BUMPER BRACKETS I LATTER LEARNED.. THE BUMPER BRACKETS THAT HELD THE BUMPER IN PLACE WAS PURCHASED FROM A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP. IF I WAS TAPPED IN A REAR END ACCIDENT AND THE BUMPER FELL OFF IT NOW BECOMES A SAFETY ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE. PHOTOS OF THE DAMAGE PRIOR AND THE BUMPER DID NOT FALL OFF. THE BUMPER FELL OFF BECAUSE OF SAFETY DEFECT OF THIS VEHICLE WHILE DRIVING DOWN THE STREET IN THE CITY.
WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT TIME, THE WHOLE LIGHTING INCLUDE HEADLIGHT AND INSIDE LIGHT LIKE ODOMETER SCREEN, NAVIGATION SCREEN COMPLETELY BLACK OUT FOR FEW SECOND SOMETIME NEAR A MINNUTE. ITS ONLY HAPPEN WHEN THE BLINKERS ITS USED.
THE WIPER SPEED, WHILE ON HIGH IS NOT FAST ENOUGH FOR A MODERATE RAINFALL. I WAS CAUGHT IN A SLIGHTLY ABOVE AVERAGE DOWNPOUR ON THE HIGHWAY AND I HAD TO REDUCE MY SPEED BY ALMOST 40MPH TO GET A LITTLE VISIBILITY BACK. ALL OTHER VEHICLES NEAR ME FLEW RIGHT PAST WITH THEIR WIPERS ON HIGH WITHOUT ANY ISSUE. THEY NEED TO SPEED UP THE WIPER MOTOR.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 TOYOTA TUNDRA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER MALFUNCTIONED, WHICH RESULTED IN LITTLE TO NO ASSISTANCE FROM THE TRAILER BRAKES EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE TRAILER BRAKE WAS ONLY OPERABLE ONCE THE VEHICLE WAS SET INTO MANUAL OVERRIDE MODE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE TRAILER BRAKE CONTROLLER WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE BRAKE CONTROLLER WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE STILL OCCURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 550. UPDATED 06/21/16*LJ *TR
THE DRIVETRAIN ON MY 2016 TOYOTA TUNDRA ARE NOT ALLOWING THE WHEELS TO ROTATE FREELY. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEELS ARE LOCKING UP ON THE TRUCK. ON 6 DEC, I PICKED UP MY TUNDRA FROM THE DEALERSHIP'S SERVICE DEPART AFTER HAVING THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE STARTED TO DRIVE SLUGGISH. AS I NEARED MY HOME, I TRIED TO TEST THE 2WD AND 4WD FUNCTIONS OF THE VEHICLE. I ATTEMPTED TO TEST THE REPAIR THAT WAS DONE. THE WHEELS ON THE VEHICLE STARTED TO HAVE PROBLEMS ROTATING FREELY AND LOCKING UP. WHILE IN 4WD THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE. IT APPEARED AS IF THE BREAKS WERE LOCKED ON THE VEHICLE. FOUR DAYS LATER, THE VEHICLE STILL DRIVES SLUGGISH. WHILE DRIVING AT SPEEDS OF 45MPH, I WOULD TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE ACCELERATOR AND THE VEHICLE WOULD ALMOST COME TO A COMPLETE STOP ON ITS OWN. CURRENTLY THE VEHICLE ACTS LIKE IT WANTS TO DRIVE IN 4WD LOW AND HIGH MODE. ADDITIONALLY, THE WHEELS ARE ACTING LIKE THEY DO NOT WANT TO ROTATE FREELY. AS OF 6AM ON 8 DEC, I CANNOT DRIVE THE VEHICLE OVER 25 MPH. THE VEHICLE IS IDLING OVER 4000 RPM AND NOT CHANGING GEARS. THE VEHICLE IS REGISTERING BEING IN 4WD LOW BUT THE SELECTOR SWITCH IS ON 2WD MODE.
WHILE DRIVING BACK FROM FLORIDA ON 30 NOV, I HEARD A HUMMING NOISE COMING FROM THE REAR OF MY TOYOTA TUNDRA. ON 2 DEC 2015, THE DEALERSHIP DID SERVICE ON THE TRUCK TO ADDRESS THE NOISE. THE DEALERSHIP REPLACED THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY AND DID SOMETHING TO THE LSD. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP ON 6 DECEMBER 2015, THE REAR WHEELS STARTED LOCKING UP AND MADE IT DIFFICULT TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I LET THE VEHICLE SET OVER THE WEEKEND. ON 7 DEC 2015, I ATTEMPTED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AGAIN, THE WHEELS WERE STILL LOCKING UP AND THE VEHICLE HAD A BURNING SMELL. I HAVE AN APPOINT TO RETURN THE VEHICLE ON 9 DEC 2015.
I PURCHASED TOYOTA TUNDRA ON 6 NOV 2015. SINCE OWNING THE VEHICLE I HAVE BEEN GETTING 460 MILES TO A FULL TANK OF GAS (38 GALLON TANK). THOSE NUMBERS EQUATE TO 12MPG IN FUEL ECONOMY ESTIMATES. I PICKED THE VEHICLE UP ON 6 NOV2015. THE TRUCK HAD A FULL TANK OF GAS. THE FUEL EFFICIENCY READ 570 MILE FOR A FULL TANK OF GAS. ON 13 NOV I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO FLORIDA. EVERY TIME I FILED UP THE TRUCK WITH FUEL THE FUEL EFFICIENCY READING STARTED TO DECLINE. ON THE FIRST THREE FULL TANK OF GAS, THE READING WAS 540 AND 520 MILES FOR A FULL TANK OF GAS ON 15 NOVEMBER. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP ON OR ABOUT 17 NOV. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT PLUGGED THE VEHICLE UP TO A COMPUTER. THE COMPUTER SENT OUT A REPORT THAT SHOWED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS GETTING 18 MPG. THE SERVICE PERSONNEL TOLD ME THAT I WOULD BE DOING WELL IF I GOT 14MPG. BASED ON THEIR COMMENTS I WAS NOT TO EXPECT ANYTHING OVER 15MPG OVER THE HIGHWAY. ON 25 NOV, I DROVE THE VEHICLE TO FLORIDA. I DECIDED TO MANUALLY TRACK THE MILEAGE IN REGARD TO A FULL TANK OF GAS WITH THE USE OF THE TRIP COUNTER. I TOOK PICTURES OF THE VEHICLE ONLY REGISTERING 12MPG ON A FULL TANK OF GAS. ON A FULL 38 GALLON TANK, I WAS ONLY ABLE TO DRIVE 460 MILES PER TANK. THAT EQUATE TO 12MPG. THE DRIVING CONDITION WAS 74-78 DEGREES; DRIVING ON I95; THERE WAS ONLY THREE PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE. I USED 89 OCTANE GRADED GAS.
BOUGHT NEW 2016 TUNDRA LIMITED 11/16/2015 AND NOTICED THAT DASH LIGHTS DO NOT COME ON DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS UNLESS PARKING LIGHTS OR HEADLIGHTS ARE ON. IN THE OFF/DRL POSITION OR THE AUTO POSITION NO DASH LIGHTS. WHEN I CALLED TOYOTA HELP LINE I WAS TOLD THAT THIS CHANGE WAS MADE BECAUSE IF THE DRIVER CAN SEE THE OUTLINE OF THE NUMBERS ON THE GAUGES THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE ILLUMINATED. HE COULD NOT OFFER ANY REASON FOR CHANGING THIS STANDARD FEATURE. OTHER THAN NOT SEEING THE GAUGES SHARPER AND CLEARER ONE SAFETY DEFECT IS PRESENT. THE TUNDRA HAS GAUGES INSTEAD OF WARNING LIGHTS FOR ENGINE OPERATIONS AND THEY ARE SMALLER THAN THE SPEEDOMETER/TACHOMETER . THE TEMP GAUGE IS LOCATED ON THE LOWER LEFT OF THE DASH AND CANNOT BE SEEN CLEARLY WITHOUT THE DASH ILLUMINATED BECAUSE THAT CORNER IS DARK IF IT IS CLOUDY OR EARLY OR LATE . IF THE ENGINE OVERHEATS ONE WOULD NOT SEE THAT PROBLEM ON THE GAUGE WHICH MIGHT LEAD TO ENGINE FAILURE ,ETC. I HAVE NEVER OWNED A VEHICLE THAT REQUIRED TURNING ON THE PARKING LIGHTS OR HEADLIGHTS TO ILLUMINATE THE DASH..DEALER SAYS THAT SWITCH CANNOT BE CUSTOMIZED. TOYOTA SHOULD ISSUE A FIX FOR THIS MISTAKE.
2016 TUNDRA CREW MAX XPSX PACKAGE, 4X4. VIBRATION IN STEERING WHEEL AT ALL SPEEDS. SOUTHEAST TOYOTA STATES THAT THE PROBLEM IS JUST A OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTIC OF THE TRUCK.
THE INTEGRATED BRAKE CONTROLLER DOES NOT WORK. DEALER HAD NO FIX. WHEN SET FOR ELECTRIC BRAKES, THE MANUAL SLIDER DOES APPLY BRAKES TO THE TRAILER BUT WHEN APPLYING FOOT PEDAL BRAKING, THERE IS NO BRAKES BEING APPLIED TO THE TRAILER. WHILE RESEARCHING THIS ONLINE ON TUNDRATALK.NET, IT APPEARS ALL OF THE NEW 2016 BRAKE CONTROLLERS DO NOT WORK. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR SOMEONE THAT DOES NOT REALIZE THE TRAILER BRAKES DO NOT WORK.
