WE HAVE 25 2007 TOYOTA YARIS'S, 14 OF 25 THE AIR BAG LIGHT STAYS ON. THE LIGHT COMES ON AT APPROX 120,000 BECAUSE OF A SWITCH IN THE STEERING COLUMN, TOYOTA DECLINES TO REPAIR IT, AND WILL NOT GIVE US A STRAIGHT ANSWER WHETHER IT WILL KEEP THE SAFETY DEVICE (AIR BAG) FROM DEPLOYING EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. *TT
AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AT ABOUT 75,000 MILES. ONLY THE DEALERSHIP COULD DIAGNOSE PROBLEM. ENDED UP BEING THE "SPIRAL CABLE". $530 FOR PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE. I WAS GIVEN NO EXPLANATION OF WHY IT HAD GONE BAD OR IF IT WAS A DEFECTIVE ITEM TO BEGIN WITH. WHEN I TYPE IN A SEARCH ON THE INTERNET FOR SPIRAL CABLE, THE MAJORITY OF THE POSTING INVOLVE TOYOTAS. *TR
MY ABS AND BRAKE WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON AT THE SAME TIME ON MY 2007 YARIS SEDAN. THE MANUAL STATES TO CONTACT THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY IN THIS SITUATION. THE ABS IS DISABLED IN THIS SITUATION. THE PROBLEM WAS A LEFT REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSOR SHORTED (CODE P0215). DUE TO EXCESSIVE CORROSION ON THE CONNECTION THE WIRING HARNESS WAS ALSO REPLACED. THE REPLACED PARTS WERE 89544-02070 (SENSOR, SKID CONTROL) AND 89516-52100 (WIRE, SKID CONTROL). THE AMOUNT OF CORROSION ON THE SENSOR AND CONNECTING WIRES ON THE YARIS POINT TO A POTENTIAL DESIGN ISSUE. AS IT TURNS OUT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON 2007 AND 2008 YARIS'S. TOYOTA HAS ISSUED A TBS, THUS THEY ARE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM APPEARS TO DEVELOP WHEN THE CARS ARE DRIVEN IN WINTER CONDITIONS..I.E. SNOW...AS WAS THE CASE WITH MINE YARIS. OTHER OWNERS HAVE HAD ABS SYSTEMS OPERATE IMPROPERLY AS A RESULT AND EXPERIENCED BRAKING PROBLEMS. *TR
CLUNKING NOISE HEARD DURING VEHICLE OPERATION OVER ROADWAY BUMPS OR APPLICATION OF BRAKES. INSPECTED TO FIND FRONT LOWER CONTROL ARM BOLT MISSING FROM DRIVERSIDE SUBFRAME AND EVIDENCE OF CORROSION. THIS BOLT IS LOCATED AT THE REAR OF THIS CONTROL ARM AND PASSES THROUGH THE SUBFRAME. BOLT HEAD AND PORTION OF SHANK WAS MISSING DUE TO CORROSION AND FATIGUE FAILURE. LOWER CONTROL ARM WAS LOOSE, POSING AN UNSAFE OPERATION CONDITION. TOYOTA HAS AN EXISTING TSB ON THIS ISSUE BUT DEALER STATED THAT TSB REPAIR TIMEFRAME IS PAST DUE SO THIS REPAIR WAS PAID OUT OF POCKET. SUBFRAME REMOVED, PORTION OF BOLT EXTRACTED, AND BOTH LOWER CONTROL ARMS REPLACED DUE TO RESULTANT DAMAGES. BUILD UP OF WATER AND SALT IN THE BOLT AREA LOOKS TO ACCELERATE CORROSION AND LEAD TO BOLT FAILURE ON EITHER SIDE THIS CAR. THIS ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RE-EVALUATED FOR A RECALL POSSIBILITY. *TR
2007 TOYOTA YARIS -- ABS AND BRAKE ISSUE (DEFECTIVE SPEED SENSORS) THIS APPEARS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM, AND UNFORTUNATELY, MY VEHICLE IS ALSO AFFECTED. THIS IS MENTIONED IN TOYOTA SERVICE BULLETIN TSB-0120-08, BUT TOYOTA IS UNWILLING TO FIX MY DEFECTIVE SPEED SENSORS WITHOUT CHARGING ~$700. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE AND PASSENGER SIDE SPEED SENSORS IN THE WHEEL BEARINGS WERE CORRODED AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 76,000. UPDATED 04/06/11*LJ
IN DECEMBER 2010, OUR '07 YARIS' ABS LIGHT STARTED TO TURN ON INTERMITTENTLY. AS DAYS PASSED, IT REMAINED ON LONGER AND LONGER UNTIL IT JUST STAYED ON ALL THE TIME. WOULD HAVE LIVED WITH NO ABS EXCEPT FOR THE FACT THAT WE HAD A NEWBORN ON THE WAY. ALSO, THE BRAKE SYSTEM SPORADICALLY SHUTTERED AND MALFUNCTIONED ODDLY UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. SO WE BIT THE BULLET AND GOT IT FIXED IN MAY 2011. TURNS OUT, THE RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR MALFUNCTIONED DUE TO WATER INFILTRATION. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN ISSUE AND DISCUSSED IN POSTS ALL OVER THE INTERNET. OUR YARIS IS A COMMUTER CAR AND HAS NEVER BEEN IN WATER OTHER THAN WHAT LAYS ON THE HIGHWAY WHILE WE DRIVE IN RAIN AND SNOW. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL THE LEFT SIDE GOES. WE COULDN'T AFFORD THE $800 FIX THE FIRST TIME AROUND, BUT WE MANAGED. BUT WE SURE WON'T HAVE THE MONEY FOR THE NEXT FIX. IT JUST ISN'T RIGHT. MY ARGUMENT IS SIMPLE: A SPEED SENSOR IS NOT AN ITEM THAT SHOULD WEAR OUT AND MALFUNCTION IN THREE YEARS. WHAT'S MORE, TOYOTA HAS SINCE REDESIGNED THIS ASSEMBLY-WHAT I TAKE AS THEIR ADMISSION OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE FAULTY DESIGN OF THIS CRITICAL ABS COMPONENT. HOW MANY OTHER YARIS OWNERS ARE OUT THERE RIGHT NOW WHO CAN'T AFFORD THIS EXPENSIVE FIX. THEIR BRAKE SYSTEMS WORKING IMPROPERLY? THEY DO SO NOT JUST BECAUSE OF A FAILED PART DESIGN BY TOYOTA, BUT MORE SO BECAUSE TOYOTA WILLINGLY CHOOSES TO IGNORE THIS WIDESPREAD PROBLEM, REFUSING TO TAKE THE RESPONSIBLE ACTION OF INITIATING A RECALL OF THIS VITAL SAFETY COMPONENT. SADLY, IT WILL LIKELY TAKE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH AND THE SUBSEQUENT LAWSUIT BEFORE SOMEONE AT TOYOTA CARES TO TAKE NOTICE. I TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO SPEAK WITH TOYOTA (LOCAL DEALER AND CORPORATE), BUT THEY OFFERED NO RECOURSE OTHER THAN TO FILE MY COMPLAINT. I WAS TOLD THE SAME AS SO MANY OTHERS:"YOUR WARRANTY IS EXPIRED. SORRY, WE CAN'T HELP YOU." I AM HOPEFUL NHTSA WILL. *KB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE EXHIBITED AN ABNORMAL GRINDING WHEN HE WOULD APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES. HE THEN NOTICED THAT THE DRIVER SIDE E LOWER FRONT CONTROL ARM BOLT WAS CORRODED AND HAD FRACTURED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE SUB FRAME WOULD NEED TO BE DROPPED AND THE CONTROL ARM BOLT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT UNDER WARRANTY THEY COULD NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 60,000 AND THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 59,000.
THIS SHOULD BE A SAFETY RECALL. UNDERNEATH THE 2007 YARIS THERE IS BOLTS HOLDING THE CONTROL ARM TO THE SUSPENSION. SIMPLY PUT THE BOLT HAS RUSTED OUT AFTER ONLY THREE YEARS. THIS IS NOT NORMAL. IT APPEARS THAT WHEN WATER SPLASHES UP UNDER THE CAR AND GETS CAUGHT THERE IS NO WAY FOR THE WATER TO DRAIN. IT JUST SITS ON THE BOLT. IF/WHEN THIS RUSTS OUT THE CONTROL ARM COULD SEPARATE FROM HE SUSPENSION AND CAUSE THE AUTOMOBILE TO LOSE CONTROL. IT IS AN OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW. I URGE YOU AND TOYOTA TO LOOK INTO THIS AND ISSUE A RECALL IMMEDIATELY, AS THERE IS MANY OTHER AUTOS ON THE ROAD WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. IT IS A SIMPLE FIX IF CAUGHT UP FRONT. UNFORTUNATELY FOR FOLKS LIKE ME, WHO ALREADY HAD THIS HAPPEN TO. IT WILL COST HUNDREDS. FORTUNATELY, NOTHING HAS HAPPENED TO ME ME YET. BUT I CANNOT GET SOMEONE TO FIX IT UNTIL NEXT WEEK AND I HAVE TO GET TO WORK. SO I WILL CROSS MY FINGERS THAT IT DOESN'T GET WORSE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS WHEEL SENSOR AND WIRING HARNESS FAILED. THE ABS WARNING LIGHT FLICKERED ON AND OFF AND THE ABS WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. WHENEVER THE ABS DISABLED ITSELF, THERE WAS A LOUD NOISE FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL SENSORS AND WIRING HARNESS. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 49,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE AND EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHTS WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. ONCE THE CONTACT ENGAGED THE BRAKES HE WOULD HEAR A MOANING NOISE AND INTERMITTENTLY EXPERIENCE AN INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON THREE OCCASIONS IN WHICH THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SENSOR NEEDED TO BE REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. WHEN THE LIGHT ILLUMINATED, IT STAYED ON CONSTANTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE GAS CAP WAS THE CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO A MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL TANK FILLER PIPE COVER HOLDER, CHARCOAL CANISTER ASSEMBLY AND CHARCOAL CANISTER FILTER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER AND FILED A COMPLAINT. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 65,000. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 55,000.
THIS VEHICLE WITH AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, BY DESIGN, AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD BY A TOYOTA TECHNICIAN, WILL NOT UPSHIFT UNTIL THE VEHICLE HAS WARMED COMPLETELY. THIS IS NOT ONLY A HAZARD IN TRAFFIC AND IS TORTURE ON THE ENGINE, BUT IT IS A HAZARD WHEN ONE NEEDS TO USE THIS VEHICLE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. FOR INSTANCE SOME ONE NEEDS TO BE TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY. WITH THIS VEHICLE YOU ARE REQUIRED TO WAIT UNTIL IT WARMS UP BEFORE ONE IS ABLE TO TRANSPORT. THERE ARE MANY OTHER SITUATIONS WHICH COULD BE PRESENTED, BUT I AM SURE THAT ANYONE WHO READS THIS DOCUMENT WI8LL UNDERSTAND THE ISSUE. TOYOTA NEEDS TO RECALL AND DESIGN THE VEHICLE TO CHANGE GEARS IF THE COMPUTER DETERMINES THAT THE DRIVER IS DETERMINED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE CONTRARY TO ITS PROGRAMMED DRIVE PATTERN. I NOTICE THAT THE DOCUMENT CL-10283172-6703 HAS PROCLAIMED THE SAME PROBLEM. AS REPORTED THERE, THE COLDER THE TEMPERATURE THE LONGER IT TAKES FOR THE VEHICLE TO WARM UP. THIS WARM UP PERIOD IS MUCH LONGER THAN THE AVERAGE WARMING TIME FOR A VEHICLE. THIS IS A CRITICAL ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE AND ANY OTHERS THAT HAVE THE SAME WARMING REQUIREMENTS. IF ONE WAS REQUIRED TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE IN A MANNER INCONSISTENT WITH ITS PRESCRIBED PROCEDURES, IT APPEARS THAT A BLOWN ENGINE WOULD PROBABLY BE THE RESULT. THIS IS NOT GOOD BECAUSE TOYOTA WOULD NOT WARRANTY THE PROBLEM ALTHOUGH THEY CAUSED. THANK YOU FOR YOU CONSIDERATION OF THIS ISSUE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH WHEN AN OPPOSING VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE DRIVER SIDE OF THE CONTACTS VEHICLE, CAUSING THE TIRES TO PARTIALLY BE LIFTED FROM THE GROUND AND TURNED INTO THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED THREE FRACTURED RIBS, A BROKEN LEFT ARM AND SEVERAL BRUISES TO THE BODY. THE VEHICLE WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND TOWED TO A SAVAGE LOT. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY WITH THE IMPACT OF THE CRASH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
FOUR (4) FAILURES FOR THE SAME REASON, CAR STOPS RUNNING, RUNS OUT OF GAS EVEN THOUGH THE GAS PANEL SHOWS THREE AND FOUR LINES OF GAS AVAILABLE. THE CAR HAS STOPPED RUNNING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD WHILE TRAVELING WITH KIDS. WAS TAKEN TO THE TOYOTA DEALER IN FEB 2008 AND THEY CLAIM THEY REPLACED THE FUEL SYSTEM. AFTER 2008 THE CAR HAS HAD THE SAME DEFECT AND HAS STOPPED IN THREE (3) DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. IT HAS BEEN TOWED FOUR TIMES. I WILL PURSUE LEGALLY AGAINST TOYOTA IF I HAVE TO DO SO. *TR
EXPERIENCED FAILURE OF EXHAUST SYSTEM DUE TO POOR CONNECTION JOINT AND GASKET DESIGN. INTERNET SEARCH REVELED OTHER FAILURES OF EXHAUST GASKET MATERIAL BUT NO TSB WAS FOUND. ENGINE OPERATION RESULTS IN MOVEMENT OF EXHAUST JOINT WHICH WEARS AT THE GASKET MATERIAL. THIS OPERATIONAL WEAR AND EXHAUST HEAT BREAKS DOWN THE GASKET MATERIAL DEVELOPING AN EXHAUST LEAK PRODUCING AN AUDIBLE NOISE AND IN-CABIN SMELL COMPLAINT. THE NOISE IS MOST AUDIBLE DURING ACCELERATION BUT THE IN-CABIN EXHAUST SMELL IS MORE CONSTANT. REPAIR REQUIRES A NEW EXHAUST GASKET ($30), NEW BOLTS ($5), NEW TENSION SPRINGS ($5), PLUS 0.5HR OF LABOR CHARGES. PARTS REPLACED AND TEST DRIVE CONFIRMED COMPLETE REPAIR. NONE OF THE PARTS ARE UPDATED FROM ORIGINAL SO IT IS EXPECTED THAT THIS FAILURE WILL RETURN IN TIME. THERE IS CONCERN THAT THE LEAKING EXHAUST GASES ARE ENTERING THE CABIN WHICH COULD BE A CONTAMINATE RISK FOR THE DRIVER AND OCCUPANTS. FAILURE OF THIS SIMPLE COMPONENT IS IRRITATING TO THE CONSUMER AND IRRESPONSIBLE OF THE MANUFACTURER. CUSTOMER HAS ALREADY NOTED THAT THIS EVENT WILL AFFECT (NEGATIVELY) FUTURE VEHICLE PURCHASE DECISIONS. NOTE: THIS FAILURE DOES NOT ILLUMINATE THE CHECK ENGINE LAMP (CEL). *TR
A/C DRAIN LINE GETS CLOGGED AND DRAINS WATER ON FLOOR. HAVE TAKEN LINE OFF AND CLEANED SEVERAL TIMES. PROBLEM RETURNS. *TR
2007 TOYOTA YARIS. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO CORROSION IN THE ALTERNATOR *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED TOYOTA DID NOT INFORM THEIR CONSUMERS OF THE POSSIBILITY OF CORROSION ON THE ALTERNATOR. EVENTUALLY, THE ALTERNATOR HAD TO BE REPLACED. ALSO, THE DOOR LOCK ON THE DRIVERS SIDE DEVELOPED A PROBLEM WHICH PREVENTED HER FROM USING THE KEY TO LOCK THE DOOR. THE DOOR HAD TO BE LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE. THEN, THE LOCK ON THE HATCHBACK DOOR DEVELOPED A PROBLEM. THE DOOR LOCK COULD NOT BE OPENED WITH THE KEY WHICH MADE THE HATCHBACK DOOR USELESS. *JB UPDATED 04/15/11
THE TRUNK OF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT STAY OPEN ON ITS OWN , THERE ARE NO SPRINGS OR ANY DEVICE TO KEEP IT OPEN ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR IS ON A INCLINE. MYSELF ,MY PARENTS AND BOYFRIEND HAVE BEEN HIT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD BY THE TRUNK LID. VERY PAINFUL. DID QUESTION THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT IT AND WAS TOLD THAT WAS HOW THE CAR WAS MADE. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MPH TRAFFIC CAME TO A SUDDEN STOP. I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO THE 2007 TOYOTA YARIS, 4 DOOR AND INSTEAD OF BRAKING NORMALLY, THE BRAKES LOCKED, CAUSING THE CAR TO SLID 30-40 FEET, STRIKING THE STOPPED CAR IN FRONT OF MINE. THE IMPACT CAUSED SIGNIFICANT FRONT END DAMAGE AND YET NONE OF THE AIR BAGS DEPLOYED. FORTUNATELY THERE WERE NO SERIOUS INJURIES, HOWEVER BOTH THE BRAKING SYSTEM AND THE AIRBAGS FAILED TO WORK PROPERLY. THE ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY AND THERE WERE NO OTHER FACTORS THAT WOULD HAVE AFFECTED THE INCIDENT. *TR
MY 2007 TOYOTA YARIS SEDAN; WHEN I APPLY BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN WHILE AT HIGH SPEED ON ROUGH ROADS,I CAN FEEL LIKE THE SENSATION OF NO INTENTION OF CAR TO STOP,I FEEL THE BRAKE PADS IN FRONT OR REAR BRAKE SHOES LIKE IN A JERKING MOTION,I FEEL THE MOTION IN THE BRAKE PEDAL,I VISUALLY INSPECT BRAKE WEAR OFTEN BECAUSE OF THIS,BRAKE SHOES LINING ARE VERY THIN NORMALLY BY FACTORY, I EVEN BOUGHT NEW BRAKE SHOES AND DID NOT INSTALLED THEM BECAUSE THERE WAS NOT MUCH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OLD AND NEW LININGS,ASIDE FROM THAT I AM CONTENT WITH YARIS ,I AM 60 YRS OLD,DRIVING SINCE I WAS 19,DROVE COMMERCIALLY IN THE PAST, COULD THERE BE A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE SYSTEM OF 2007 YARIS,I NEVER FELT SUCH SENSATION IN BRAKE PEDALS WHILE SLOWING DOWN AT HIGH SPEED ON ROUGH ROADS WHILE DRIVING ANY VEHICLE,COULD YOU LOOK INTO THAT? PURCHASED A 07 TOYOTA YARIS ON 6/7/2010 CERTIFIED WITH 77302 MILES ON IT FOR MY SON. CAR HAS HAD NO INCIDENTS UNTIL 7/25/10 AT APPROX 7:30 - 7:45PM EST. DRIVING CONDITIONS WERE SUNNY AND CLEAR. MY SON AND I HAVE DRIVEN ON THE ROAD MANY TIMES BEFORE AS IT IS VERY CLOSE TO THE HOUSE. WHEN MY SON WAS TRYING TO BEAR RIGHT AROUND A TURN AT THE TOP OF THE HILL WHILE GOING APPROX 25-30 MPH HE COULD NOT TURN RIGHT TO STAY IN HIS LANE. APPLIED THE BRAKES WHILE THE CAR DROVE DIRECTLY INTO A LARGE TREE. THERE WAS NO WAY TO AVOID THE TREE AS THE CAR WOULD NOT ALLOW HIM TO STEER IT. THE POSTED SPEED LIMIT IS 40 MPH FOR THE GENERAL AREA AND 25 MPH SUGGESTED SPEED FOR THE CURVE. ALTHOUGH NO AIRBAGS DEPLOYED, NEITHER DRIVER OR PASSENGER WERE INJURED. DAMAGE TO FRONT END AND THE LEFT QUARTER PANEL PUSHED BACK INTO THE LEFT DOOR SO THE HINGE IS IMPEDED WHEN OPENING THE DOOR. ENGINE WAS PUSHED BACK ON A TILT. THE OFFICER SAID HE COULD NOT SEE ANY OTHER WAY THE ACCIDENT COULD HAVE HAPPENED AS NO ONE WOULD WILLINGLY DRIVE DIRECTLY INTO A TREE ON PURPOSE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP THAT EVENING. ON 7/26 I SPOKE TO THE SERVICE MANAGER (SM) AS DIRECTED BY THE GM. THE SM SUGGESTED I SPEAK TO TOYOTA VIA AN 800 #. I CALLED, GAVE DETAILS AS DESCRIBED ABOVE AND HAVE A CASE NUMBER. I WAS ASSIGNED A CASE MANAGER ON 7/27 AND WAS PROMISED A REGIONAL TOYOTA INVESTIGATOR WOULD LOOK AT THE CAR WITHIN 10-14 BUSINESS DAYS. SHORTLY THEREAFTER I SPOKE TO THE COLLISION MANAGER TO ADVISE HER OF THE ISSUE AND WAITED FOR SOMEONE TO CONTACT ME FROM TOYOTA ADVISING ME WHEN THE INSPECTION WILL TAKE PLACE. ON 8/13 A REP FROM TOYOTA'S EXEC. OFFICE CONTACTED ME AND INDICATED I WOULD NEED TO SIGN AN EDR DATA READOUT AUTHORIZATION AND CONSENT FORM. THEY THINK THE INSPECTION WILL OCCUR ON 8/19 OR 8/20. I HAVE REQUESTED TO VIDEOTAPE THE COMPUTER SCREEN DURING THE DOWNLOAD OF EDR & ECM DATA ALONG WITH IT BACKED UP ON A USB DRIVE AND GET A PRINTOUT AND EXPLANATION FROM THE INSPECTOR. *TR

ON 6/1/10 MY 2007 TOYOTA YARIS WOULD NOT START AND AFTER A FEW TRIES I FOUND GAS POURING FROM THE AREA BELOW THE GAS TANK. THIS ONLY OCCURRED WHEN THE STARTER WAS RUNNING AND APPEARED TO COME FROM A LEAK BETWEEN THE FUEL PUMP AND THE ENGINE. I THEN CALLED LEXINGTON, MA TOYOTA AND THEY ARRANGED TO HAVE A TOW TRUCK PICK UP THE CAR AND TAKE IT TO THEIR GARAGE. TOYOTA THEN CALLED TO SAY THAT THE PROBLEM WAS A BREAK IN THE FUEL LINE FROM THE FUEL PUMP AND THAT THEY WOULD HAVE TO ORDER THE PART AND IT WOULD TAKE ABOUT A WEEK BEFORE WE WOULD GET THE CAR BACK. THEY ALSO SAID THAT THE FAILURE WAS NOT COVERED BY THE VEHICLE WARRANTY. WE HAVE HAD THE YARIS FOUR YEARS AND IT HAS ABOUT 9000 MILES ON IT. WHEN I READ THE WARRANTY DESCRIPTION IN THE TOYOTA MANUAL IT SAYS THAT THE FUEL PUMP, SEALS, AND GASKETS IN THE POWER TRAIN ARE COVERED FOR 60 MONTHS AND 60,000 MILES AND NONE OF THE WARRANTY EXCEPTIONS APPLIED. I QUESTION TOYOTA'S CONCLUSION THAT THIS FAILURE IS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY AND APPEAL THIS DECISION. THE GAS LINE WAS CLEARLY ABRADED WHICH COULD HAVE HAPPENED BEFORE, DURING, OR AFTER MANUFACTURE. THEY CLAIMED THAT THE ABRASION HAD BEEN DONE BY AN ANIMAL IN MY GARAGE BUT, 1) THE CAR IS STORED IN A CLOSED GARAGE, 2) THERE HAS NEVER BEEN ANY EVIDENCE OF ANIMALS IN THE GARAGE, AND 3) ANIMAL DAMAGE IS NOT AMONG THE LIST OF EXCLUDED CONDITIONS. FURTHER, HAD THE GASOLINE CAUGHT FIRE BOTH THE CAR AND HOUSE WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BURNED. I [XXX] PURCHASED A 2007 TOYOTA FROM MOSS BROTHER TOYOTA THAT HAVE A DEFECTIVE TRUNK PART THAT ALLOW THE TRUNK DOOR TO COMING DOWN ON YOUR HEAD WHEN OPENED. SEVERAL TIMES THAT CAR TRUNK HAVE CAME DOWN HITTING ME IN THE HEAD. THIS WAS REPORTED TO THE CAR DEALERSHIP AND TO THE MANUFACTURE REP. I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA YARIS ON MARCH 30,2010 AROUND 1600 HRS AND THE ACCELERATOR STUCK IN THE FULL THROTTLE POSITION AND CAUSED A COLLISON AFTER THE BRAKES FAILED TO HOLD THE VEHICLE BACK FOR APPROX 200 FEET DOWN THE ROAD. THE COLD WEATHER AND SALT USED ON THE ROADS DURING A SNOWY WINTER APPEAR TO WREAK HAVOC ON THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE WIRING HARNESS AND THE REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORS ON THE YARIS SEDANS. A LITTLE INTERNET RESEARCH WILL LEAD YOU TO THE CONCLUSION THAT THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM IN CANADA OR ANYWHERE WHERE SALT IS USED ON THE ROADS IN WINTER. SINCE THIS PROBLEM DOES NOT PRESENT ITSELF ON THE COROLLA IN THE SAME WAY, THEN THERE MUST BE A DESIGN ISSUE ON THE YARIS. A PROPER WATER/WEATHER TIGHT CONNECTION BETWEEN THE WIRING HARNESS AND THE REAR WHEEL SPEED SENSORS WOULD SOLVE THIS ISSUE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE INTERMITTENT CONNECTION CAUSES ERRATIC OPERATION (IF ANY) OF THE ABS ON THESE MODELS. I BELIEVE THERE IS A TSB RELEASED ON THIS SUBJECT, BUT NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS. THE IDENTICAL FAILURE OCCURRED ON THREE SEPARATE OCCASIONS. ALSO, THE FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE TRAVELING ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE BRAKES WERE CLEANED. THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE BRAKES FUNCTIONED NORMALLY. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 34000.
I OWN A 2007 TOYOTA YARIS, PURCHASED AUGUST 2006. THE BRAKE AND ABS INDICATOR LIGHTS STARTING COMING ON INTERMITTENTLY IN DECEMBER 2009 (OFTEN WHEN IT WAS RAINING OR SNOWING OUTSIDE), MY DEALER SAID THAT THIS WAS CAUSED BY AN ISSUE WITH THE RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR, AND SHOULDN'T INDICATE ANY ACTUAL PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKES. HOWEVER, SOON AFTERWARD (JANUARY 2010), I STARTED EXPERIENCING BRAKE PROBLEMS---THE BRAKE PEDAL WOULD SHUDDER OR VIBRATE OCCASIONALLY, EVEN WHEN I WAS DRIVING ON A SMOOTH SURFACE AT LOW SPEEDS. EVEN PUMPING THE BREAKS, I HAD TROUBLE STOPPING AND SLID THROUGH A STOP SIGN MORE THAN ONCE. MY DEALER SAID THIS INDICATED THAT THE ABS WAS KICKING IN WHEN IT SHOULDN'T, AND RECOMMENDED A $600 REPLACEMENT OF THE RIGHT REAR SPEED SENSOR. I GOT THIS REPAIR DONE, AND THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE SOLVED. *TR
2007 TOYOTA YARIS OFF AND ON I HAVE BEEN HAVING BRAKING ISSUES. WHEN I PRESS ON THE BRAKE IT ALMOST HAS AN EFFECT OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM KICKING IN. YET THE EFFECT IS MORE PRONOUNCED. DEFECTIVE DESIGN ON VEHICLE'S ABS HARNESS/CONNECTORS CAUSES IT TO BECOME INOPERATIVE AFTER CORROSION SETS IN, MINE HAPPENED AFTER 2 YEARS AND AROUND 68K MILES. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THE SEAT BELT FINALLY RELEASED ITS GRIP FROM AROUND THE CONTACT. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIANS ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD NEED TO BE DIAGNOSED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED NOR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 110,000.
A BAD CONNECTOR LEADING TO THE ABS SPEED SENSOR FAILED ON OUR TOYOTA YARIS CAUSING TWO WARNING LIGHTS TO COME ON. OWNERS MANUAL STATES TO "STOP IMMEDIATELY AND CONTACT TOYOTA DEALER". ABS SPEED SENSOR WAS REPLACED AT A COST OF OVER $500 BUT IN FACT THE PROBLEM IS A CORRODED CONNECTOR. TOYOTA AND DEALER STATED THAT A TECHNICAL SERIVCE BULLETIN WAS ISSUED REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. I WAS THEN TOLD THAT BECAUSE A "CONNECTOR" NOT A "MODULE" FAILED THIS PROBLEM IN NOT SUBJECT TO A RECALL. HOWEVER, SINCE MANUAL SAYS TO "STOP IMMEDIATELY" WHICH FREAKED OUT MY WIFE THIS CLEARLY IS A SAFETY PROBLEM. ALSO, IT SHOULD NOT TAKE $500 TO REPLACE A FAULTY CONNECTOR. I FOUND A CHAT-ROOM ONLINE WHERE IT BECAME CLEAR THAT MANY OTHERS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. *CN
THE ABS LIGHT WOULD START COMING ON FROM TIME TO TIME. IT WOULD STAY ON FOR DAYS AT A TIME (DURING WHICH TIME I HAD NO ABS), THEN GO OFF FOR NO REASON. THE BRAKE PEDAL STARTED TO SHUDDER AND VIBRATE WHETHER OR NOT I WAS TOUCHING IT. IF IT HAPPENED TO BE VIBRATING WHILE I WAS ACTUALLY BRAKING, BRAKE POWER WOULD BE HEAVILY REDUCED. THIS HAS CAUSED ME TO HAVE TO SWERVE OUT OF THE WAY SEVERAL TIMES SO I DON'T REAR-END SOMEONE. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY WINTER SINCE 2009, AND HAS NOT GONE OFF SINCE LAST WINTER (2011/2012). MANY OTHER YARIS OWNERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THIS SAME PROBLEM HAPPENING. MANY ATTRIBUTE IT TO ONE OR BOTH OF THE REAR WHEEL SENSORS. SOME HAVE HAD THIS REPLACED FOR MANY HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS BY TOYOTA; WHILE IT FIXES THE PROBLEM FOR A WHILE, THE NEW SENSOR BECOMES FAULTY WITHIN A COUPLE OF YEARS (ABSURDLY SHORT AMOUNT OF TIME). I BELIEVE THIS IS DUE TO WATER INFILTRATING THE SPEED SENSOR. A RECALL SHOULD BE MADE TO REPLACE THE REAR WHEEL SENSORS WITH ONES THAT HAVE BETTER WATER PROTECTION. TOYOTA HAS SINCE REDESIGNED THE REAR WHEEL SENSORS ON THE NEW YARIS, BUT FAILS TO OFFER A RECALL ON THE MANY THOUSANDS OF DANGEROUS YARIS' ON THE ROAD. *TT
I WAS DRIVING MY 2007 TOYOTA YARIS WHEN THE HOOK THAT HOLDS THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOOR MAT BROKE LOOSE FROM THE VEHICLE'S FLOOR. THE FLOOR MAT WORKED ITS WAY UP AND JAMMED THE GAS PEDAL WHEN I WAS PULLING OUT IN TRAFFIC. THE ONLY WAY I WAS ABLE TO SLOW THE CAR DOWN WAS TO KICK THE GAS PEDAL SEVERAL TIMES.
