WHEN USING THE CRUISE CONTROL AND GOING UP A HILL, ABS LIGHT AND BRAKE LIGHT COMES ON. NOW IT DOES IT EVEN WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL ON. THOSE LIGHTS COME ON WHEN YOU START THE CAR. THE BRAKES AND FLUIDS HAVE ALL BEEN CHECK AND THERE IS NO DEFAULTS WITH ANY OF THAT.

I WAS DRIVING BELOW THE 30MPH SPEED LIMIT ALONG A CITY STREET AND HEARD A LOUD GRINDING NOISE FROM REAR RIGHT OF THE CAR. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE STREET AND SAW THAT THE BACK RIGHT REAR CORNER OF THE CAR WAS DOWN CLOSE TO THE WHEEL. THE EXHAUST PIPE WAS IN ITS USUAL PLACE. I CALLED A TOWING COMPANY AND THEY FLATBEDDED ME TO TOYOTA IN SANTA FE, NM AT 5PM ON A SATURDAY EVENING. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT TOYOTA THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER HANDED ME THE LARGE SPRING WHICH HAD FALLEN OFF THE CAR. TOYOTA REPLACED THE MISSING UPPER INSULATION DISC AND PUT THE REAR RIGHT SPRING BACK IN PLACE AND I DROVE 5 HOURS HOME. THE INSULATION DISC COULD HAVE FALLEN OUT ONTO THE STREET AND I DID NOT KNOW TO LOOK FOR IT. THE REAR SPRINGS CAN EASILY BE LEVERED OUT OF PLACE WITH A SCREWDRIVER SO MY CAR MECHANIC ATTACHED THE BOTTOM OF THE SPRING TO THE CRADLE IT SITS ON AND WELDED A GUARD TO THE CRADLE SO THAT THE SPRINGS CANNOT JUMP OUT. I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE DRIVING SLOWLY ON A CITY STREET INSTEAD FAST ON THE INTERSTATE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I HAVE FILED A REPORT WITH TOYOTA SO THEY CAN FIX THIS, IN MY OPINION, DESIGN FLAW. *TR

I'VE BEEN IN THREE MODERATE/SERIOUS DIFFERENT ACCIDENTS AND ALL THREE TIMES THE AIRBAG DID NOT ACTIVATE. I WAS LUCKY NOT TO RECEIVE SERIOUS INJURIES BUT I HAVE BUMPED MY HEAD, EYES, AND CHEEKS ON THE WHEEL AND EVEN THE DASHBOARD OF PASSENGERS SIDE.

ENGINE OIL HAS TO REFILLED EVERY 100 MILES WITH 3 QUARTS. THE DIP STICK SHOWS VIRTUALLY NO OIL WHEN THE OIL LIGHT COMES ON.
IN THE WINTER MONTHS SINCE I BOUGHT MY CAR BRAND NEW, RANDOMLY THE ABS WOULD JUST GO OFF DURING NORMAL BRAKING AND THEN STOP WORKING ALL TOGETHER AND THE ABS AND THE E-BRAKE LIGHT WOULD COME ON FOR A WHILE. WHEN I WAS DRIVING HOME ONE MORNING I WAS COMING UP TO A RED LIGHT WHEN THE ABS DECIDED TO STOP WORKING AND I SLID RIGHT THROUGH THE LIGHT, ALMOST GETTING HIT BY ON COMING TRAFFIC. NOW I HAD DISMISSED THE PROBLEM TILL I REALIZED THAT IT COULD CAUSE HARM TO ME OR MY CHILDREN AND THE ABS AND E-BRAKE LIGHT WILL NO LONGER GO OFF WHICH IS CAUSING ME TO FAIL EMISSIONS. *TR

PERIODICALLY MY ABS BRAKE LIGHT WILL COME ON DURING WINTER WEATHER AND THEN IT WILL JUST GO AWAY WHEN IT IS DRY. ON SNOW ROADS MY BRAKES SOMETIMES WILL NOT WORK. ONE DAY DRIVING I DROVE THROUGH A RED LIGHT BECAUSE MY BRAKES WOULD NOT STOP EVEN THOUGH I WAS GOING AROUND 30 AND BRAKED WHILE IN ADVANCE. LUCKY, FOR ME OTHER DRIVERS STOPPED. MY MECHANIC CONFIRMED THAT MY ABS WIRING HAS TO BE REPLACED AND THE HUB. THIS IS A COMMON ISSUE FOR YARIS AND TOYOTA ADMITTED THEY KNOW THIS IS AN ISSUE BUT THEY DO NOT HAVE A RECALL. THIS COULD HAVE EASILY COST MY LIFE OR MY 18 MONTH OLD SON'S LIFE. *TR
ON JANUARY 18TH 2014 , WHILE EXITING HWY 41 ON TO THE ASHLAND AVENUE OFF RAMP IN FRESNO CALIFORNIA THE BRAKES FAILED AND THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED. *TR
BOLT HEAD SECURING LEFT FRONT WHEEL SUSPENSION AND FRAME, WAS APPARENTLY SHEARED OFF BY POTHOLE WHILE DRIVING. LOUD METALLIC POP HEARD. NOT SURE WHY PARTS ARE STILL HOLDING TOGETHER. WILL NEED REPAIR ASAP. *TR

SINCE I BUY THE CAR SOMETIMES WHEN I TURN IGNITION ON IT MAKES THE NOISE THAT IS STARTING ALL LIGHTS ON THE DASHBOARD TURN ON FOR A ALMOST A 20 TO 30 SEC. THEN SOMETIMES WHEN I'M DRIVING THE SPEED GEAR DROPS WITH OUT ME BRAKING ALSO WHEN I TURN RIGHT SIGNAL ON SOMETIMES THE REVERSE LIGHT ON DASHBOARD ALSO TURN ON. ONE TIME ALL LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD WERE BLINKING WENT I TURN SIGNAL ON. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE PERSON THERE TOLD ME THEY DON'T HAVE ANY RECALLS AND NO COMPLAIN THEN CAN'T DO ANYTHING IF THEY DON'T SEE THE PROBLEM. I HAVE A VIDEO THIS. NOW WHEN I HIT THE BRAKE THE RIGHT SIGNAL CANES ON. SECOND TIME I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER THE IGNITION CALL HAD A FAILURE THEY REPLACE COIL 3 AND DASHBOARD LIGHTS DIAGNOSTIC CAME NORMAL AND VEHICLE LIGHTS STILL DO THE SAMETHING. AND IGNITION STILL DOES THE SAMETHING AND IF I GO BACK TO THE DEALER TO DO ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC THEY WILL CHARGE ME 124 DOLLARS IF NOTHING IS FOUND WRONG. THE PROBLEM IS THERE BUT THEY CAN'T FIND IT I SHOW THE VIDEO TO THE GUY IN THE DEALER AND STILL NOTHING. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY AND TOOK A RAMP IN THE RIGHT LANE WHILE IT WAS DRIZZLING. AS I BEGAN TO GO DOWN THE RAMP, I THE CAR BEGAN SHIFT TOWARD THE WALL, AND I BRAKE. THE CAR BEGAN TO SPIN OUT OF CONTROL, AND COMPLETELY HYDROPLANED. WE HIT A DIVIDING WALL SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE COMING TO A STOP ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RAMP. I HAVE EXPERIENCED PREVIOUS ISSUES WITH THE BRAKES DURING WET AND DRY CONDITIONS. SOMETIMES IF I PUSHED HARD ON THE BRAKES, I WOULD FEEL A VIBRATION UNDER THE CAR, AND THE BRAKES WOULDN'T WORK PROPERLY. MY CAR IS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND BOTH OF MY YOUNG CHILDREN WERE IN THE CAR WHEN IT HAPPENED. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT AT 20,000 MILES THE REAR PASSENGER'S SIDE TIRE BEGAN TO WARP AND THE OTHER THREE TIRES BEGAN TO WEAR AT AN UNUSUAL RATE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. ENERGY LEVEL IN BATTERY WAS SUFFICIENT TO START YARIS BUT INSUFFICIENT TO KEEP/GET THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING MOTOR TO OPERATE CORRECTLY. RESULT: MY 80 YEAR OLD WIFE WAS ABLE TO GET OUT PARKING LOT BUT AFTER SHE TRIED TO MAKE RIGHT HAND TURN SHE ENDED UP IN ONCOMING TRAFFIC LANE, FORTUNATELY 2 CARS WERE ABLE TO SWIRL TO THEIR RIGHT HAND SIDE, HENCE COLLISION WAS AVOIDED. ALTERNATOR MUST HAVE KICK IN BECAUSE POWER STEERING STARTED TO WORK AGAIN. EVENT OCCURRED IN MEXICO. *TR
I HAVE A LIGHT ON MY DASH THAT LOOKS LIKE AN ENGINE. HAD THE CAR TESTED AND IT SHOWS THAT IT IS A LITTLE MODULE TYPE DEAL THAT HAS HAD TO DO WITH FUEL EVAPORATION OR SOMETHING ON THAT LINE. SOUNDS LIKE THEY ARE NOTORIOUS FOR GOING BAD. ITS LIKE A $300 PART. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 35,000.
OUR DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 44 IN MISSOURI AT OR NEAR GREY SUMMIT MISSOURI WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL SET ON, WHEN OUR 2008 TOYOTA YARIS STARTED TO ACCELERATE ON IT'S OWN. OUR DAUGHTER HAD TO SWERVE TO MISS HITTING OTHER VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY. SHE ATTEMPTED TO STOP AND THE CRUISE CONTROL DID NOT DISENGAGE. TO AVOID HITTING ANOTHER VEHICLE SHE STEERED THE VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY AND CRASHED HEAD ON INTO TREES. TOYOTA HIRED BOSCH TO HAVE THE "BLACK BOX" ANALYZED. THE COMPANY AND BOSCH CLAIM NO MALFUNCTION OF THE VEHICLE. OUR DAUGHTER CONTINUES TO DISPUTE THEIR CLAIMS AND WE HAVE LOST THE VEHICLE IN AN INSURANCE CLAIM TO AAA OF MISSOURI. IN ADDITIONAL WE HAVE LOST VALUE IN THE VEHICLE, WE ARE PAYING INSURANCE ACCIDENT PENALTIES AND LOST $1000 IN DEDUCTIBLES. WE CONTINUE TO DISPUTE TOYOTA AND BOSCH'S CLAIM THAT THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. SINCE OUR ACCIDENT THERE HAS BEEN ADDITIONAL EVIDENCE OF "TIN WHISKERS" AS POTENTIAL CAUSE OF ELECTRONIC FAILURE. WE BELIEVE WE HAVE BEEN THE UNFORTUNATE VICTIMS OF TOYOTA NEGLIGENCE AND NEED TO REQUEST ASSISTANCE IN FIGHTING THIS ISSUE WITH TOYOTA. *TR
THE DRIVER'S SEAT WOULD NOT STAY PUT. IT KEPT GLIDING BACK AND FORTH ON THE RAIL. WE HAD OUR MECHANIC REPLACE THE SEAT BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT PASS INSPECTION. THERE WAS A RECALL ON THIS AND TOYOTA REFUSED TO PAY US FOR THE WORK WE HAD DONE.

PURCHASED 2008 TOYOTA YARIS SEDAN USED IN 7/09 FOR MY DAUGHTER WITH 16,000 MILES ON IT. SHE'S AT COLLEGE SO I DRIVE IT EVERY OTHER DAY TO WORK WHICH IS ONLY 10 MILES. I BEGAN TO NOTICE A SOUND WHEN I MADE A SHARP RIGHT HAND TURN INTO A PARKING SPOT LIKE THE NOISE OF AN ACTUAL BAR AND ALSO A RATTLE IF I WENT OVER A SMALL DIP IN THE ROAD. I WAS TOLD IT NEEDED NEW TIRES ON 10/12/12 @ 29,645 MILES, I BOUGHT GOOD,SAFE TIRES:GOODYEAR EAGLE LS TIRES 185/60R15. ON 5/10/13 I HAD HER CAR SERVICED AT TOYOTA: OIL CHANGE, TIRES ROTATED, INSPECTION OF AIR FILTER, BALL JOINTS, ETC. AFTERWARDS, AS I WAS DRIVING MY DAUGHTER AND I UP TO MY SON'S COLLEGE GRADUATION IT WAS 80 DEGREES/SUNNY/CLEAR ROADS. 52 MILES INTO OUR TRIP I WAS IN THE SLOW LANE FOLLOWING TRAFFIC AT 65 MPH.WATCHING THE ROAD, BOTH HANDS ON THE STEERING WHEEL. ALL OF A SUDDEN THE STEERING WHEEL JERKED TO THE LEFT AND WE BEGAN TO GO INTO A SKID.I WAS AVOIDING OTHER CARS AS I WAS TRYING TO REGAIN CONTROL OF THE YARIS. IT WAS BUCKLING UNDER ME EACH TIME I TRIED TO CAREFULLY GET US OUT OF THE SKIDS.MY FOOT WAS NOT ON THE BRAKE BUT I HAD CAREFULLY PULLED IT OFF OF THE ACCELERATOR AND I REMEMBER THINKING WHY WASN'T THE CAR SLOWING DOWN, IT JUST KEPT SKIDDING. AFTER THE 4TH SKID IT WENT INTO A COMPLETE 180 DEGREE SPIN WITH US SLAMMING INTO THE CEMENT MEDIAN.I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES AS WE WENT TOWARD THE WALL. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING FOR 35 YRS WITH NO ACCIDENTS AND I HAVE BEEN IN SKIDS BEFORE, ON ICY ROADS & REGAINED CONTROL. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT CAUSED THE STEERING TO MALFUNCTION. I HAVE READ ABOUT FAULTY BOLTS ON THE CONTROL ARM. THE AUTO REPAIR SHOP DID TELL ME THEY REPLACED THE STABILIZER BAR.I HAVE NOTICED SINCE THE REPAIR THE NOISE UNDER THE CAR IS GONE AND THE THROTTLE NO LONGER "SCREAMS" WHEN I TAKE MY FOOT OFF THE GAS GOING DOWNHILLS. WE WERE NOT SPEEDING, NOR DRIVING CARELESSLY. THIS CAR DOES NOT HAVE ABS NOR ANTI-SPIN BRAKES. *TR
DRIVING VEHICLE ON CITY STREETS, AND ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE. BRAKE AND ABS CAME ON, AND ABS SYSTEM ENGAGED. ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY, WEATHER WAS WARM AND SUNNY. ABS ENGAGEMENT MADE IT DIFFICULT TO COME TO COMPLETE STOP, EVEN THOUGH ROAD CONDITIONS WERE DRY. SINCE INITIAL INCIDENT, ABS SYSTEM COMES ON PERIODICALLY WHILE DRIVING AND WHILE BRAKING. TOYOTA HAS DENIED ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR REPAIRS, EVEN THOUGH THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE THAT NUMEROUS YARIS OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED. LATER MODELS FOR THE YARIS HAVE HAD THE ABS DESIGN FIXED TO PREVENT THIS ISSUE FROM HAPPENING. *TR
WHEN THE IGNITION TURNS ON THE CAR PASSES THE INITIAL SAFETY CHECKS. BUT WHEN DRIVING THE " WARNING LIGHT THAT THE DRIVER SIDE AIR BAG HAS FAILED " COMES ON. TOYOTA DOES NOT CURRENTLY HAVE ANY RECALL ON THIS DEFECT. BUT APPARENTLY THE DEALERSHIP KEEPS THE FAILED PART IN STOCK. *TR
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR AT APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH THE ABS AND BRAKE LIGHTS CAME ON. AT THE SAME TIME THE ABS FELT LIKE THEY ENGAGED. AFTER RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM ONLINE I FOUND OUT THAT MANY USERS IN THE US AND CANADA ARE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM DUE TO FAULTY ABS WHEEL SPEED SENSORS ON THE WHEEL HUB. DUE TO THE SALT ON THE ROADS DURING THE WINTER MONTHS, SALT CAN ENTER THE SENSOR AND CORRODE THE TERMINALS. THIS IS DUE TO A POOR SEAL BETWEEN THE CONNECTOR AND THE WIRING HARNESS. WHEN SALT WATER ENTERS THE TERMINALS IT CAUSES THE ABS TO ACT UP. THIS IS TRUE FOR 2007 AND 2008 MODELS ACCORDING TO OTHER YARIS USERS. IT SEEMS THAT THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN TAKEN CARE OF IN 2009 MODELS. BUT FOR OWNERS OF 2008 AND 2007 MODELS PROBLEM EXISTS EVEN AFTER REPLACING THE SENSOR AND WIRING HARNESS WITH NEW ONES. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN SINCE THE ABS SYSTEM CAN ENGAGE AT ANY TIME POSSIBLY CAUSING AN ACCIDENT AND/OR INJURY TO THE DRIVER AND PASSENGERS. *TR
VEHICLES EMERGENCY BRAKE LIGHT AND ABS LIGHT CONTINUED TO COME ON. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE TOYOTA DEALER AND WE WERE TOLD THAT THE REAR WIRING HARNESS AND SENSORS HAD COMPLETED ERODED AND THAT UNTIL THIS PROBLEM WAS REPAIRED THE VEHICLE HAD NO WORKING ABS SYSTEM OR TRACTION STABILITY CONTROL. WE WERE ADVISED THAT TOYOTA IS AWARE OF THE PROBLEM BUT HAS STILL NOT DONE A RECALL. THIS TO ME IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUED THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED. THE DEALER DID STATE THAT THE REASON THE WIRING HARNESS HAD ERODED WAS BECAUSE THE ACTUAL HARNESS IS OPEN ON THE BOTTOM ALLOWING MOISTURE TO GET INTO THE HARNESS AREA. THE COST FOR THIS REPAIR IS OVER $750. *TR

THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, HE LOST CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND IT SLID INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE CONTACT STATED ANOTHER VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE FRONT END OF HIS VEHICLE. THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOW YARD. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED INJURIES TO HIS BACK, NECK, LEFT ELBOW, AND LEFT KNEE. THE CONTACT ALSO SUSTAINED AN INJURY TO HIS LIP AND CHIN WHEN HE STRUCK THE STEERING WHEEL. THE POLICE REPORTED TO THE SCENE AND A REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 61,706. *TR
THE BRAKE AND ABS LIGHTS CAME ON SIMULTANEOUSLY. THEY INTERMITTENTLY CAME ON FOR THE FIRST DAY AND FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS THEY HAVE STAYED ON. I WAS TOLD BY A MECHANIC THAT IT IS LIKELY A CORRODED SENSOR. APPARENTLY THIS HAS BEEN AN ISSUE FOR MANY OF THE YARIS PER INTERNET RESEARCH. I CAN'T AFFORD THE REPAIR RIGHT NOW AND HAVE NEW BRAKE PADS THAT I WAS TOLD BY THE MECHANIC ARE FINE, BUT I'M NOT SURE IF I SHOULD CONTINUE DRIVING IT BASED ON REPORTS OF ACCIDENTS BY OTHER OWNERS. THIS SEEMS LIKE A PREMATURE FAILURE AND SAFETY ISSUE THAT SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY TOYOTA GIVEN THE NUMBER OF OWNERS THAT HAVE HAD THE COMPLAINT. THE ALTERNATOR ALSO NEEDED REPAIRED AT ABOUT 45000 MILES, WHICH SHOULDN'T HAVE HAPPENED AT THAT MILEAGE, BUT A BAD ALTERNATOR DOESN'T NECESSARILY CAUSE THE SAME SAFETY ISSUES AS MALFUNCTIONING BRAKES. DURING DUSK, THE DRIVER NEEDED TO KNOW THE LIGHTS WERE ON, AND A DARK INSTRUMENT PANEL INDICATED THE HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT ON.
