I HAVE A 2002 VW NEW BEETLE. PROBLEM..ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON, THEN GOES OFF. HAD MANY COSTLY REPAIRS. PROBLEM REOCCURS. MECHANIC STATED THAT I MAY NEED A NEW CATALYTIC. HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT CAR MAINTAINS AN 80,000 OR 7 YEAR WARRANTY. IS THIS TRUE AND IF SO HOW DO I GET MY CAR FIXED ASAP BEFORE THIS WARRANTY EXPIRES? CAR HAS 54000 MILES AND IS NOW 7 YEARS. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 VW BEETLE AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS DO NOT WORK BECAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAILED. I KNOW THEY HAVE RECALLED OTHER BEETLES FOR THIS BUT WHEN I CALLED VW THEY SAID IT WAS NOT RECALLED ON MY VEHICLE. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT ABLE TO BE TAKEN OUT OF PARK DURING FAILURE OF THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WAS REPLACED 4 TIMES. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL # 06V183000 WHICH PERTAINED TO THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE HAD DIFFICULTIES STARTING. THE SERVICE DEALER REPLACED THE WIRING HARNESS. THE AIR BAG AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED, AND THE KEY WAS HOT WHEN REMOVED FROM THE IGNITION. THE ELECTRIC WINDOWS MALFUNCTIONED; OPENED AND CLOSED WITHOUT WARNING. THE SERVICE DEALER DETERMINED THE MALFUNCTIONS WERE DUE TO A SEATBELT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE'S AIRBAG WARNING LIGHT SUDDENLY ILLUMINATED WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO DETERMINED THAT THE AIRBAG WAS DEFECTIVE BUT DECLINED TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM BECAUSE THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED. THERE WERE NO REPAIR INVOICES AVAILABLE BECAUSE NO REPAIRS WERE MADE.
IN JUNE I TOOK MY 2002 VW BEETLE TO THE DEALERSHIP BECAUSE IT AGAIN WOULD NOT START. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED ALREADY, A BATTERY CHANGE, AND THEN ANOTHER ALTERNATOR. SO THREE ALTERNATORS SINCE CREATION. I WAS TOLD THAT ANOTHER BATTERY HAD FAILED. SO NOW THREE BATTERIES IN TOTAL. I ALSO TOLD THEM THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE STICKING ON AND BURNING OUT THE BULBS, THAT THEY STAYED LIT SO PEOPLE COULD NOT TELL IF I WAS BRAKING AND THAT THE CRUISE CONTROL WAS NOT WORKING. I WAS TOLD BY CORPORATE THAT MY VIN DID NOT FALL UNDER A RECALL. I ARGUED THAT WHILE MY VIN MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED IT DID NOT NEGATE THE FACT THAT THE CAR HAD THE SAME FAILURE AND CAUSE AS THOSE LISTED AS PART OF THE RECALL. THEY FINALLY AGREED TO WARRANTY THE BRAKE SWITCH FAILURE. I PAID FOR THE NEW BATTERY. HOWEVER, THE CAR WAS RETURNED TO ME WITH OUT WORKING TURN SIGNALS AND HAZARD LIGHTS. THE SERVICE REP FAILED TO RETURN MY CALLS ABOUT IT ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. ONLY AFTER I CONTACTED THE MGR DID THEY CALL ME. THEY SAID TO BRING IT BACK AND THEY WOULD FIX IT. NOW THEY WANT TO CHARGE ME $135 BECAUSE THEY SAY THE SWITCH INSIDE THE DASH FAILED AND IT WAS NOT RELATED TO THE ELECTRICAL ISSUES WITH THE BRAKE SWITCH. FUNNY THE CRUISE CONTROL, ETC WERE RELATED. I WAS TOLD THE BRAKE SWITCH ALLOWED ELECTRICAL TO BE BACK FED INTO THE SYSTEM THAT WAS TOO POWERFUL FOR THE CIRCUITS THUS BURNING THEM OUT. THEY CAN NOT EXPLAIN WHY THE TURN SIGNALS WOULD NOT BE AFFECTED BY THIS NOR WHY THEY RETURNED IT TO ME BROKEN. THIS CAR IS AN ELECTRICAL LEMON! *NM
DT*: THE CONSUMER STATED THE AIR BAG LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS. THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THE SWITCH IN THE SEAT BELT NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. IF THE SWITCH IS NOT REPLACED, THE AIR BAG MAY NOT DEPLOY IN A COLLISION. *JB UPDATES 3/3/2006 - *NM
CLUTCH FAILURE (BEGAN TO SLIP) ON 2002 NB TDI @ 77K MI. *NM
SUNROOF CLOGS CONSTANTLY CAUSING WATER LEAKS INTO THE CAR FROM THE HEADLINER OR DOWN THE SIDE ALONG THE WINDSHIELD TO DOOR FRAME PILLAR. APPARENTLY, THERE ARE MANY VW BEETLE OWNERS OUT THERE WITH THIS SAME ISSUE. I HAD VW FIX IT AND IT WAS CLOGGED AGAIN WITHIN A MONTH. *NM
ANY TIME I TURN ON MY AIR CONDITIONER IT SOUNDS LIKE MY CAR IS GOING TO BLOW UP. COLD AIR COMES OUT, BUT THE NOISE AND THE SHAKING OF MY CAR SCARES ME. IT STARTED ABOUT 4 MONTHS AGO. I WOULD HAVE THE AC ON AND IF MY CAR WAS IDLING THE NOISE WOULD START UP AND MY CAR WOULD VIBRATE, IT FELT LIKE MY CAR WAS IDLING VERY HEAVILY. IT SOUNDED LIKE A JACK HAMMER. NOW, IT HAPPENS JUST WHEN I TURN THE AIR ON, BUT IT'S EVEN LOUDER THAN BEFORE. ALSO I HEAR THE JACK HAMMER SOUND WHEN THE AIR IS NOT ON AND HASN'T BEEN TURNED ON AT ALL WHEN MY CAR IS AT A STOP OR WHEN I TURN THE CAR OFF. I DON'T HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT SO I HAVEN'T EVEN BOTHERED TO TAKE IT IN ANYWHERE TO GET IT FIXED. ON TOP OF IT ALL, I CAN'T PUT MY WINDOWS DOWN BECAUSE IN NOV '05 MY PASSENGER SIDE WINDOW DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRACK. AFTER A COUPLE OF MONTHS I STARTED TO GET THE FEELING THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WAS NOT TOO FAR BEHIND WITH IT DOING THE SAME. SURE ENOUGH, THIS PAST APRIL, IT DID THE DEED. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP ABOUT THIS TO SEE IF FIXING IT WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT BECAUSE MY WARRANTY WAS EITHER 5 YEARS OR 60,000 MILES AND MY CAR BEING ABOUT 62,000 MILES WAS TOLD IT WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX THIS CAR, I'VE BEEN HAVING A TOUGH TIME JUST PAYING FOR THE CAR ITSELF AND FIGHTING WITH VOLKSWAGEN CREDIT ABOUT THIS. *JB
VW NEW BEETLE - IN SHOP FOR 3 MONTHS OUT OF 24 MONTHS OWNED. ENGINE TROUBLE, WINDOW TROUBLE, STARTER TROUBLE AND NOW CLUTCH PROBLEMS. *NM
08/05 PURCHASED VEHICLE FROM LEXUS OF GLENDALE 09/05 EXPERIENCE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH BRAKES. PEDDLE WOULD NOT SPRING BACK INTO PLACE CAUSING CAR TO BE STUCK IN THE ROAD. I HAD TO PHYSICALLY PICK UP THE PEDDLE SO THE CAR WOULD MOVE AGAIN. TOOK BACK TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID THEY CANNOT DUPLICATE PROBLEM AND LEFT IT UNRESOLVED. 10/05 BRAKE PROBLEM OCCURRED MANY MORE TIMES. TWICE WHEN I TAP THE BRAKE TO SLOW DOWN IT WOULD HAVE A LOUD SUCTION VACUUM SOUND AND GO STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR AND GET STUCK LEAVING THE VEHICLE BEHIND ME WITH NO WARNING TO STOP. TOOK TO DEALER...THEY SAID THEY KNEW WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, BUT ARE NOT AUTHORIZED TO FIX UNLESS THEY CAN DUPLICATE. WE ASKED THEY HOW MUCH IT WOULD COST IF WE WANTED TO PAY OUT OF POCKET. THEY SAID THEY CANNOT GIVE US A PRICE BECAUSE IT'S UNDER WARRANTY...?!? PROBLEM UNRESOLVED!!! 10/05 PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN, BUT THIS TIME ON THE FREEWAY. DEALER SAID BRING IT BACK AND WE'LL LOOK AT IT YET AGAIN! WE ASKED FOR OUR MONEY BACK AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD BUY IT BACK AT A FRACTION OF WHAT WE PAID. LEFT UNRESOLVED...LOOKING FOR ALTERNATIVE WAY TO GET OUR MONEY BACK. *NM
JUST AFTER REACHING 35,800 MILES, MY 2002 VW NB SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING ON THE FREEWAY LOST POWER AND SPEED. THE ENGINE BEGAN TO REV ERRATICALLY FROM A LOW OF 1000 RPMS TO 6000/7000 RPMS WHILE THE SPEED CONTINUED TO DROP BELOW 50 MPH. I TOOK THE CAR TO A VA DEALERSHIP FOR THE 35,000 MILE SERVICE AND BOUGHT THE ERRATIC ENGINE BEHAVIOR TO THE ATTENTION THE OF SERVICE MANAGER. HE ADVISED ME THAT HE HAD "NO IDEA WHAT-SO-EVER" (INDICATING SO ON THE SERVICE PAPERS FOR THE CAR) ABOUT WHAT WAS CAUSING THE CARS ERRATIC BEHAVIOR BUT WOULD TEST DRIVE IT TO TROUBLESHOOT THE PROBLEM. I RECEIVED A CALL LATER THAT DAY THAT THEY HAD FOUND THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. THE "FLY WHEEL" WAS "FALLING OUT" OF THE CAR AND WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED ASAP. FURTHERMORE, WHILE TROUBLESHOOTING THE CAR THE MECHANICS HAD ACTUALLY BROKEN THE FLY WHEEL (CLUTCH) RENDERING THE CAR UNDRIVABLE. THE SERVICE MANAGER ADVISED ME THAT IN THE 3 YEARS THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT HAD SERVICED MY CAR THEY HAD NEVER CHECKED MY CLUTCH AS IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE SELF-REGULATING AND THAT HE FOUND IT UNUSUAL THAT THE CLUTCH WOULD FALL OUT WITH SO FEW MILES ON THE CAR. HOWEVER, THE SERVICE MANAGER INFORMED ME THAT THE CLUTCH IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY AND WOULD COST ME APPROXIMATELY $2,000 OR MORE TO REPAIR. I CONTACTED VA OF AMERICA TO INQUIRY AS TO WHY THE CLUTCH IS NOT SERVICED REGULARLY WITH THE REST OF THE CAR AND WHY OWNERS ARE NOT ADVISED OF THE SO-CALLED SELF-REGULATING CLUTCH WHICH IS NOT MENTIONED ANYWHERE IN THE OWNERS MANUAL. THE CONSUMER REPRESENTATIVE STATED THAT EVEN IF THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE NOW AT 35,000 MILES THAT I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN ACTION TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED WHEN IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH SHE COULD NOT SPECIFICALLY STATE WHEN THE FLY WHEEL WAS UNDER WARRANTY OR WHETHER IT IS STILL UNDER WARRANTY. AS YET THE CAR HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. *NM
2002 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE ELECTRIC FAN FAILED.*MR THE STATED THAT AN OBJECT MUST HAVE HIT THE FAN TO CAUSE IT TO FAIL. THE CONSUMER STATED THE FAN WAS PROTECTED ON ALL SIDES BY STEEL AND ALUMINUM. THE CONSUMER STATED THE ONLY WAY TO ACCESS THE FAN WAS TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. *JB
DT : THE KEY WILL NOT TURN IN THE INGITION. HAD TO WAIT UP TO 10 MINUTES IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO START. ONCE IT STARTED IT STAYED LOCKED/PARKED. IT WAS INTERMITTENTLY. CONTACTED THE DEALE, THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM AND COULD NOT T REPLACE PARTS UNTIL THEY DUPLICATE. THIS STARTED ON MAY 15, 2005. ALSO THE TRUNK RELEASE WILL NOT UNLOCK FROM THE BUTTON THAT USED INSIDE THE VEHICLE. DEALER COULD NOT DUPLICATE THIS PROBLEM EITHER. *AK
VEHICLE WAS ON THE ROAD WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE BRAKES DID NOT OPERATE WHEN THEY WERE APPLIED. AS A RESULT, VEHICLE HIT A TELEPHONE POLE. UPON IMPACT, AIR BAGS FAILED TO DEPLOY. *AK
I PURCHASED THIS "LIKE NEW"VW SUPER BEETLE ON DEC 31 04. IT HAD ONLY 17000 MILES ON IT. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION MODULATOR ON IT CHANGED, AND IN THE SHOP 6 TIME FOR A TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN SITTING FOR AN HOUR OR SO IT WILL HESITATE THEN SLAM INTO 2ND GEAR. IT CAUSES ME AND PASSENGERS TO LUNGE FOWARD THEN BACK. I AM TOLD THIS IS A CHARATURISTIC OF VW AND SHOULD JUST IGNORE IT OR GET USE TO IT.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE. OVER THE COURSE OF THREE YEARS, THE SEAT BELT LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED ON THE DASHBOARD. THE FIRST TIME THIS INCIDENT OCCURRED THE FAILURE WAS REMEDIED AT THE VOLKSWAGEN DEALER. THE SECOND TIME, THE ENTIRE SEAT BELT UNIT WAS REPLACED AS A RESULT OF A CRASH. THE CONTACT NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS, BUT VOLKSWAGEN IS UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 50,500 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 30,000.
AT ABOUT 30,000 MILE, THERE WAS A FAILURE OF ELECTRONIC INTSRUMENTATION PANEL DUE TO SOME KIND OF SHORT CIRCUIT, WHICH THEY FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN AT ABOUT 60,000 MILE WITH SAME SYMPTOM, WHICH I COULD NOT FIX IT BECAUSE ITS WARRANTY WAS OVER. BUT, I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT ITS INSTRUMENTATION IS FAULTY PART IF SAME PART HAS A FAILURE TWICE WITHIN 60,000 MILES WHEN OTHER INSTRUMENTATION PANEL LAST MORE THAN 220,000 MILE IN MY OTHER VW JETTA WITHOUT ANY FAILURE AT ALL.*AK
I OWN A 2002 VW BEETLE. THE SEAT BELT LATCH BECAME DEFECTIVE, THUS TURNING THE AIRBAG SYSTEM IN MY CAR OFF. I HAVE 80K MILES ON MY CAR AND THE REPAIR COST ME OVER $350. VW IS REFUSING TO PAY FOR THIS VITAL SAFETY ISSUE STATING THEY ARE NOT REQUIRED TO REPAIR OUT OF WARRANTY ITEMS. ISN'T THERE A LAW THAT REQUIRES AUTO MANUFACTURERS TO REPAIR DEFECTIVE SEAT BELTS? MY CAR CONTINUES TO GET STUCK IN PARK. IT'S LEFT ME STRANDED NEEDING ASSISTANCE FROM STRANGERS. ITS FRUSTRATING AND SCARY TO HAVE THIS HAPPEN.*AK
PROBLEM: VERY HARD TO SHIFT GEARS WHILE DRIVING AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO SHIFT INTO REVERSE. CAR ONLY HAD 35,000 MILES. TOOK CAR TO VW DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. REPAIR PERSON KNEW INSTANTLY WHAT PROBLEM WAS. AFTER TAKING CLUTCH APART, VW DEALER SAID TOTAL CLUTCH FAILURE AND SHOWED ME THE CLUTCH PARTS. VW DEALER REPLACED CLUTCH AND I WAS BILLED $1600. VW SAID NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY BECAUSE WEAR AND TEAR ITEM. (I EVEN PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY FROM THE SAME DEALER WHEN I PURCHASED THE CAR). THIS IS B.S. A CLUTCH DOES NOT FAIL ONLY AFTER TWO YEARS OF NORMAL DRIVING. THIS TYPE OF CLUTCH IS A MAJOR DEFECT AND VW KNOWS ABOUT IT. I CALLED VW OF AMERICA TO REPORT PROBLEM WHICH WAS TOTALLY USELESS. I AM SO DISGUSTED WITH VW NOW, I WILL NEVER BUY A VW AGAIN AND I WILL ALWAYS ADVISE MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY NEVER TO OWN A VW.*AK
TRANSMISSION REPLACED THREE TIMES, STILL NOT WORKING PROPERLY, LUNGES INTO FORWARD AND REVERSE, AND WILL DROP INTO AND OUT OF HIGH AND LOW GEAR WHEN DRIVING. SUNROOF LEAKED BECAUSE THE DRAINAGE TUBING WAS NOT CONNECTED AT FACTORY CAUSING WATER DAMAGE TO LEATHER SEATS AND NOW MOLD IS GROWING INSIDE OF VEHICLE, MAKING IT DIFFICULT TO BE INSIDE AND HAVE HAD ONE SINUS INFECTION ALREADY. *JB
WHILE AT A STOP/DRIVING VEHICLE JERKED FORWARD. DEALERSHIP WAS NOTIFIED, BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. *AK
REAR COLLISION ACCIDENT IN 2004, NOW SEATBELT LATCH MECHANISM NOT WORKING, STRUTS AND WHEEL BEARINGS DAMAGED AND NEED REPLACEMENT ALONG WITH SUBFRAME AND EMERGENCY BRAKE SYSTEM. *TR
I HAVE A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE AND WAS FILLING THE GAS TANK WITH FUEL AT A TEXACO IN BEAUFORT, SOUTH CAROLINA. THE GAS PUMP SHUT OFF WHEN THE TANK FILLED UP, AND I PULLED THE PUMP FROM MY TANK. WHEN I REMOVED THE PUMP GASOLINE BURST OUT OF THE TANK AND COVERED ME IN GASOLINE. THE GASOLINE WENT INTO MY EYES AND ALL OVER MY BODY AND CLOTHES, AND I BECAME CHEMICALLY BLIND FOR NEARLY TWO HOURS. I WAS RUSHED TO THE HOSPITAL AND HAD TO HAVE MY EYES FLUSHED OUT WITH TWO BOTTLES OF SOLUTION PER EYE. THE GAS STATION REPLACED THE NOZZLE OF THE PUMP, BUT STILL COULD NOT VERIFY THAT THE PUMP WAS TO BLAME. THE EXPERIENCE WAS EXTREMELY TRAUMATIC.*AK
THE CLUTCH ON 2002 BEETLE 1.8 TURBO WENT OUT ON MY WIFE ON I-40 IN AMARILLO. THE CAR WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND SHE WAS GOING 30 MILES PER HOUR IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON THE INTERSTATE. SHE WAS ABLE TO MOVE ACROSS TWO LANES AND EXIT THE INTERSTATE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE VW CLUTCHES IN THE 1.8 TURBOS SEEM TO BE HAVING VERY EARLY FAILURE. THE CLUTCH WAS REPLACED FOR $1450.00 AND NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. I HAVE REQUESTED TO SEE THE OLD PARTS. I HAVE READ THAT THE NEW CLUTCH AND FLYWHEEL HAVE DIFFERENT PART NUMBERS THAN ORIGINAL.*AK
VW 2002 TURBO BEETLE HAD AN EPC LIGHT COME ON. THE CAR WAS LOOSING POWER AND WOULD CUT OFF AT TIMES (IN TRAFFIC). I TOOK IT IN AND THEY SAID THAT IT A PROBLEM WITH THE VACUUM ON THE TURBO. THE RECEIPT SHOWS THAT THEY REPLACED A SWITCH. ABOUT A FEW WEEKS LATER, THE CAR STARTED LOOSING POWER AGAIN. I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND BROUGHT IT IN. I WAS TOLD THAT THE CAR'S CLUTCH WAS OUT AND THAT I NEEDED A NEW CLUTCH & FLYWHEEL. THE ESTIMATE WAS $1800 TO REPAIR. THE CAR HAS ABOUT 27,000 MILES (PROBABLY LESS). THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY DOES NOT COVER THE CLUTCH EVEN AT 27,000 MILES. I WAS TOLD THAT IT WAS ONLY A 12,000 MILE WARRANTY FOR THIS TYPE OF REPAIR. THIS IS A MAJOR PART OF THE DRIVE TRAIN AND SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER THE DRIVE TRAIN WARRANTY FOR MORE THAN 12,000 MILES. I HAVE DRIVEN STANDARDS ALL MY LIFE. THERE IS APPARENTLY A PROBLEM WITH THE VW CLUTCHES.*AK
THE VEHICLE WARNING PANEL LIGHT ILLUMINATE FOR NO APPARENT REASON. THE BATTERY DIED. THE VEHICLE INDICATED IT WAS OVERHEATING WHEN IT WASN'T. THE VEHICLE INDICATED IT WAS OUT OF GAS WHEN IT WASN'T. THE VEHICLE HAS HAD CONSTANT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS THAT AFFECT THE LIGHTS, DOOR LOCKS, SEATS, ENGINE AND WARNING LIGHTS. THE CONSUMER HAS STOPPED DRIVING THE VEHICLE. *AK
I WAS DRIVING AT 65 MPH ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE WHEN THE VEHICLE "COUGHED OR SPUTTERED" AND THE ENGINE QUIT. I TURNED THE KEY TO OFF POSITION AND BACK ON AND THE ENGINE RESTARTED. I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE ON DOWN THE HIGHWAY APPROXIMATELY ONE TO TWO MILES WHEN I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION, LIKE A BACKFIRE, COME FROM UNDER THE CAR. THE CAR BEGAN SMOKING IMMEDIATELY A BLUISH SMOKE. I KNEW SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT SO I SLOWED DOWN, TURNED AROUND AND BEGAN HEADING BACK TOWARD THE CITY. THE CAR DID NOT HAVE FULL POWER AND SO I WAS ONLY GOING TWENTY TO THIRTY MILES PER HOUR AND HAD TRAVELED ABOUT ONE HALF MILE WHEN ANOTHER CAR BEGAN PASSING ME AND FLAGGED ME DOWN TELLING ME THAT MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. BY THE TIME I GOT STOPPED THE SMOKE WAS COMING OUT THE HOOD AND OUT FROM THE DASH. I IMMDEDIATELY GRABBED MISCELLANEOUS PERSONAL ITEMS AND CARRIED THEM ABOUT 5O FEET BEHIND THE VEHICLE AND WAS ABLE TO RUN BACK FOR ONE MORE TRIP BEFORE IT LOOKED ENTIRELY UNSAFE TO ATTEMPT ANOTHER TRIP. THE WITNESS CALLED 911 BUT THE CAR WAS COMPLETELY BURNT UP BEFORE THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GOT THERE. *AK
VW 2002 TURBO BEETLE SUDDENLY STARTED TO LOSE POWER, CUT OUT IN TRAFFIC A COUPLE OF TIMES. TOOK IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP AS AN EMERGENCY. WAS TOLD THE CLUTCH WAS BAD AT LESS THAN 25K ON THE SPEEDOMETER? PART NOT COVERED BY POWERTRAIN WARRANTY - "HIDDEN" WARRANTY, SO THEY WANTED $1800 TO FIX. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS FOR 30-YEARS, NEVER HAD A TRANSMISSION OR CLUTCH PROBLEM EVEN ON CARS WITH OVER 200K ON CLOCK. THEY CHARGED ME $300 TO TEAR DOWN CLUTCH, VW MAINTAINED "DRIVER OUTSIDE INFLUENCES." MEANWHILE I GET ON THE INTERNET AND THERE ARE PAGES OF WEB SITES AND HUNDREDS OF LETTERS ON VW 2002 TURBO BEETLES WITH BAD CLUTCHES, GOING OUT AT 5K, 11K, 17K 25K, 36K AND SO ON, BUT VERY EARLY IN HE LIFE OF THE VEHICLE. AFTER MORE RESEARCH, IT TURNS OUT THAT THE ENGINES ARE POORLY DESIGNED AND THE CLUTCH IS TOO SMALL FOR THE TURBO ENGINE AND THUS BURNING UP AT LOW MILEAGE. ALSO PROBLEMS ON 2001 VW JETTA'S WHERE FLYWHEEL IS CRACKING AND LEAKING ONTO CLUTCH AND BURNING UP CLUTCH. VW ARE VERY AWARE OF THE SITUATION AND ARE NOW PLACING LARGER CLUTCH IN NEWER MODELS. HOWEVER, THEY WERE DENYING RESPONSIBILITY AND PLACING REPAIR COSTS ONTO CUSTOMERS. VW CUSTOMER CARE WERE THE MOST ARROGANT AND DIFFICULT PEOPLE I'VE DEALT WITH IN 30-YEARS OF DRIVING. THEY MESSED WITH MY LIFE AND THE LIFE OF OTHERS AND THIS IS UNCONSCIONABLE. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VW OR RECOMMEND A VW TO ANYONE AGAIN. THE VEHICLE IS REPAIRED BUT I AM TURNING IT IN FOR A HONDA. *NM
DOOR LOCKS HAVE NEVER WORKED PROPERLY. THE CAR HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS FOR LOCK PROBLEMS AT LEAST 8 TIMES. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. OFTEN THE DOORS WILL NOT LOCK WITH THE INTERIOR POWER DOOR LOCK. THEY HAVE GIVEN SEVERAL DIFFERENT DIAGNOSIS, WE HAVE BEEN TOLD THEY CAN'T REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM, AND NOW THEY ARE STATING THAT THE CAR IS DESIGNED TO OPERATE SO THAT THE DOORS CANNOT BE LOCKED FROM THE INSIDE UNTIL THE CAR IS STARTED IF THE TRUNK WAS OPENED WITH THE POWER TRUNK RELEASE ON THE KEY. THEY TELL ME I HAVE TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR, USE THE TRUNK RELEASE BUTTON ON THE DOOR AND THEN THE LOCKS WILL WORK PROPERLY. I CANNOT USE THE REMOTE TRUNK OPENER AND I HAVE TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR FIRST!!!! THIS PROBLEM DID NOT START UNTIL WE HAD OWNED THE CAR FOR 14 MONTHS. THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE OTHER PROBLEMS AS WELL. *LA

AND ADVISED ME THAT I WAS OK SO I TOOK CAR HOME AND 3 DAYS LATER IT DID IT AGAIN, I TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT VW DEALERSHIP AND THEY TOOK CAR OVERNIGHT AND THEY FOUND THAT THE HYDL BOOSTER WAS BAD,THEY REPLACED THAT AND THEN I EXPRESSED MY CONCERNS ABOUT THE BRAKES BECAUSE THEY JUST DIDNT FEEL RIGHT TO ME. I WAS ADV THAT OH THE BRAKES ARE GOOD AND SENT ME ON MY WAY. ABOUT 2 WEEKS LATER I DIDNT TRUST TO TK MY CAR TO DEALERSHIP I TOOK CAR TO ACTOR GATOR WHICH WAS GREAT! TO CHECK MY BRAKES AND THEY FOUND PROBLEM AND SHOWED ME HOW BACK BRAKES SHOULD LOOK LIKE AND HOW MINES WAS (THERE WAS HARDLY ANY LEFT ) AND THEY REPLACED BRAKES FOR ME. IM UPSET THAT EVEN THOUGH I PURCHASED A USED CERITIFED VW FROM A VW DEALERSHIP I FELT COMFORTABLE AND I DIDNT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY COULD SELL A CAR WITH NO BRAKES WHICH IS A SAFETY ISSUE.AND THEN A CUSTOMER HAVING TO PAY FOR BRAKES NOT EVEN A MONTH AFTER I GOT IT.

SEATBELT AIR BAG SENSOR- AIR BAG MALFUNCTION LIGHT CAME ON 11/8/03 TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP THEY ORDERED THE PART. BOTH HEADLIGHTS WERE NOT WORKING BY THE TIME I GOT TO THE DEALER, THEY REPLACED THOSE, TURN SIGNALS WERE GOING ON AND OFF ALONG WITH THE HAZARD LIGHTS, WAS TOLD THESE NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. CALLED IN 2 WEEKS AND WAS TOLD THE PARTS WERE ON MANUFACTURE BACKORDER AND THEY WOULD CALL ME WHEN THEY CAME IN. I CALLED EVERY 2 WEEKS THEY PART WERE NOT IN. 3/3/04 SMOG TEST DONE TO REGISTER MY CAR- FAILED SMOG, TOOK CAR TO DEALER CAT CONVERTER OUT, THEY HAD TO ORDER PART SAID THEY WOULD REORDER THE SENSOR, 3/12/04 TOOK CAR BACK IN PARTS NOT IN YET, CALLED EVERY DAY PARTS NOT IN NOW MY REGISTRATION WAS LATE. CAT CONVERTER CAME IN ON 4/2/04 IT WAS INSTALLED DEALER WAS REFUSING TO SMOG TEST FOR FREE THE FINALLY DID BUT WOULD NOT PAY THE FEES FOR MY REGISTRATION BEING LATE. CALLED AGAIN EVERY 2 WEEKS PARTS DID NOT COME IN. 6/30/04 WENT IN OTHER PARTS ON THE CAR WERE BRAKING OFF, EMERGENCY BRAKE HANDLE BROKEN, DISPLAY LIGHTS NOT WORKING, CUP HOLDER BROKEN, AGAIN THEY HAD TO ORDER PARTS, AND THEY NEVER CAME IN. 8/18/04 AIR CONDITIONING STOPED BLOWING COLD AIR, MADE APPT ONLINE FOR 8/23/04 TOOK CAR IN, NONE OF THE PARTS ORDERED ARE IN AGAIN. SERVICE STATED MY AIR CONDITIONING IS NOT COVERED BECAUSE OF A HOLE IN THE CONDENSOR EVEN THOUGH MY WARRANTY STATES IT IS COVERED THEY REFUSED TO FIX IT AND TRIED TO CHARGE ME $95.00 FOR FINDING THE HOLE, I REFUSED TO PAY AFTER ALL I HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE NOVEMBER FOR SEVERAL PARTS INCLUDING A SAFTEY ISSUE, THE DEALER SERVICE HAS BEEN THE WORST I DEALT WITH IN 25 YEARS OF DRIVING. I HAVE SENT EMAILS, PHONE CALLS AND FAXES TO THE DEALER REGARDING ALL MY COMPLAINTS AND HAVE NOT RECEIVED A RESPONSE. *AK

THE EPC LIGHT COMES ON THE DASH. I WAS TOLD THIS IS DUE TO A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH THAT WILL GO OUT. THIS CAUSES CRUISE CONTROL TO GO OUT, BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT WORK, AND DIFFICULTY GETTING YOUR GEARSHIFT OUT OF PARK OR NEUTRAL.*AK
AT AND AFTER 30,000 MILES MANY MECHANICAL FAILURES INCLUDING 2 ALTERNATORS REPLACED, 2 BATTERIES REPLACED, EPC LIGHT HAD COME ON TWICE, BRAKE LIGHT DEFAULTS, SIGNAL LIGHT DEFAULTS. MOST OF THIS WAAS FIXED UNDER WARRANTY, HOWEVER, THE A/C SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING AT 65,000 MILES AND IS NOT A FREON ISSUE. THE A/C WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY.
THE CAR HAS BEEN TO THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT FOR THE DRIVER SIDE TAIL LIGHT BULB TO BE REPLACED TWICE. BULB REPLACEMENT ONLY FIXES THE PROBLEM FOR 2 TO 3 DAYS. THERE IS SOME TYPE OF SHORT AND I KEEP GETTING HIT WITH A SERVICE CHARGE EVERY TIME THE VEHICLE GOES IN FOR THIS. ALSO THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT IS SHOWING SOME BEYOND NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR FOR A VEHICLE WITH ONLY 25K. THE LEATHER SEATING SURFACE IS TEARING AT THE SEAMS AND APPEARS TO BE OF VERY THIN MATERIALS IN THE BOLSTER AREA. *NLM
THE VEHICLE'S SPEED DROPPED DRAMATICALLY, AND THEN STALLED. *JB THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED THE FOLLOWING: THE LIGHTS WOULD COME ON, WOULD NOT COME OUT OF PARK(REPEATEDLY), LOCK UP, SIT FOR HOURS/FROZEN, START BUT NOT COME OUT OF PARK, ABS AND EPC LIGHT PROBLEMS WHICH WAS FIXED UNDER WARRANTY AND WAS TOLD THE OVERLOAD PROBLEMS SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED, WHILE DRIVEN, THE VEHICLE DROPPED DOWN TO 30 MPH AND DOWN TO 20 MPH ON ANOTHER OCCASION, THE MOTOR SOUNDED LOUD AND THE VEHICLE HAD SHAKEN, THE DEALER FOUND THREE FAULT CODE FOR THROTTLE CONTROL AND FAULTY THROTTLE BODY(DEALER ASSURED CONSUMER THAT THE PROBLEM WOULDN'T HAPPEN AGAIN), AND THE CONSUMER WAS TOLD THAT THERE WAS A MISFIRE ON ALL CYLINDERS AND THAT THE PLUG WIRES WERE REPLACED. ON ONE OCCASION WHERE VEHICLE DID NOT COME OUT OF PARK, THE DEALER SUGGESTED THAT THE PROBLEM HAD COME FROM THE BRAKE SWITCH AND ASSURED THAT THE FREEZE UP(S) WERE SOLVED. THE VEHICLE SAT FOR FIVE HOURS, THEN THE VEHICLE FINALLY STARTED AND THE DEALER STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THE WIRING HARNESS TO THE ECM(THE PART HAD TO BE ORDERED). *SCC *JB

OWNER SELF DIAGNOSED PROBLEM AS RADIO KEEP ALIVE POWER WAS PULLING EXCESSIVE CURRENT DUE TO INTERNAL RADIO FAULT. THE RADIO WAS REPLACED AND SOLVED THE ISSUE. IT TOOK AT LEAST 4 VISITS TO THE DEALER TO GET THIS RESOLVED. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE. WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE FAILURE RECURRED MULTIPLE TIMES. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WIRING HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 8,000.
