WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING AT 65MILE PER HOUR....THE MADE IN BRAZIL, SUMMIT TIRE P195/65R15 DRIVERS SIDE REAR TIRE...INSIDE TREAD FAILED. THE BLOWOUT, BROKE FIVE BANDS, AND LOST ABOUT FOUR SQUARE INCHES OF TIRE AT THE BLOWOUT SITE. TIRES ARE INFLATED TO 35PSI, AND SHOWS NO SIGN THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY IMPACT DAMAGE. THE TIRES HAD BEEN REPLACE LESS THEN TWO YEARS AGO, AND HAD ABOUT TWENTFIVE THOUSAND MILES ON THEM AT THE TIME. DAMAGE WAS CAUSED TO THE RIM, WHEEL COVER AND WHEEL LOCKS BY A ROADSIDE TECH. WHOM ATTEMPTED TO CHANGE THE TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO REPLACE TIRE AND HAVE A NEW ONE INSTALLED AT THE TIRE CENTER WHERE IT WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED. THE TIRE TECH. INDICATED THAT THE OTHER TIRE THAT I WANTED REPLACED AT THE SAMETIME WAS A "GOOD TIRE", AND AS NOTED BY MYSELF AND THE TIRE TECH. STILL HAD NOT REACHED THE WEAR GAGE. I EXPLAINED THAT THE TWO TIRES HAD BEEN REPLACED AT THE SAME TIME...AND DUE TO THE BLOWOUT, I DID NOT FEEL THAT THE BATCH MAYBE DEFECTIVE. *TR
THE CAR WOULD INCREASE/DECREASE SPEED INCONSISTENTLY. ADDITIONALLY, THE EXHAUST SYSTEM WOULD SMELL HORRIBLE. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD BE ON/OFF INTERMITTENTLY AND I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR RECALL WORK. I WAS TOLD THAT I NEEDED TO REPLACE THE IGNITION COIL AND THAT IT WAS ALREADY DONE UNDER ANOTHER RECALL. TURNS OUT THAT IT WASN'T DONE UNDER A RECALL- I PAID FOR IT OUT OF POCKET AFTER THE RECALL WAS ISSUED FEBRUARY 03 BY VOLKSWAGEN. I CALLED VOLKSWAGEN TO FIND OUT IF I COULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE COILS THAT I PAID TO INSTALL AND WAS TOLD THAT "MY VEHICLE DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE RECALL." THE PRESS RELEASE CLEARLY STATES THAT"ALL VOLKSWAGENS EQUIPPED WITH THE 2.8L ENGINE" QUALIFIES. NOW- I'M STUCK. I NEED TO PAY FOR NEW IGNITION COILS AGAIN AND NEITHER SET QUALIFIES FOR THE RECALL. A WEB SEARCH HAS TURNED UP MANY OTHER CONSUMERS THAT ARE DEALING WITH THIS SAME ISSUE WITH VW. IT'S A SAFETY HAZARD FOR THOSE OF US DRIVING VW AND OTHERS ON THE ROAD WITH US. THIS IS MY FOURTH JETTA AND MAY BE MY LAST BASED UPON MY EXPERIENCES IN GETTING THIS RESOLVED.*AK
INADVERTENT PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT: WHILE DRIVING ALONG ON THE EXPRESS WAY (I-495 W, LONG ISLAND, NY), MY PASSENGER-SIDE AIRBAG DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON. I DID NOT COME INTO CONTACT WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE NOR DID I NOTICE ANY DEBRIS HITTING MY VEHICLE AT THE TIME OF THE IMPACT. BOTH THE PASSENGER SIDE AIR CURTAIN AND PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG DEPLOYED. ADDITIONALLY, THE ENGINE CUT OFF. UPON PULLING OVER, I WAS ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE WITHOUT ISSUE, AND DRIVE HOME. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. ON TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS, THE REAR BRAKES LOCKED UP. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING 60 MPH AND THE SECOND FAILURE, WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE BECAME ENGULFED IN SMOKE. HE WENT TO THE DEALER TO HAVE THE VEHICLE REPAIRED UNDER RECALL NOTICE # 02V031000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC: ANTILOCK). SINCE THE RECALL REPAIR WAS PERFORMED, HE HAS RETURNED TO THE DEALER TWICE DUE TO THE BRAKE FAILURE. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 127,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. THE CONTACT TOOK HER VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR RECALL # 04V096000 (EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH). SHE WAS CHARGED A DIAGNOSTIC FEE. AFTER THE RECALL WORK WAS PERFORMED, THE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED AGAIN. THE DEALER HAS NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE DEALER GAVE HER A LIST OF REPAIRS THAT NEED TO BE PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. THE TOTAL COST FOR THE REPAIRS WILL BE $2,000. THE PURCHASE DATE AND FAILURE MILEAGE WERE UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 36,860.
I WAS TRAVELING DOWN I40 WEST BOUND ON THE APPOXIMATE DATE. THE PAVEMENT WAS WET, BUT NOT RAINING. I HAVE NOTICED MY JETTA'S STEERING A LITTLE SQUIRRELLY OVER THE LAST MONTH. WHEN I HIT A "LUMP" IN THE ROAD THE CAR DRAGGED TO THE LEFT. I STEERED TO THE RIGHT WHICH SENT THE VEHICLE INTO A SPIN. I SPUN OUT BUT DID NOT HIT ANYTHING. WHEN I TOOK MY JETTA TO THE SHOP, THE OWNER SAID IT WAS A CONTROL ARM AND BUSHING PROBLEM. HE STATED THIS WAS A NOTORIOUS PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. I HAD REPAIRS DONE TO THE LEFT SIDE WHICH AMOUNTED TO $275.44 AND STILL NEED TO GET THE OTHER SIDE DONE. *TR
I HAVE RECENTLY HAD THE IGNITION COIL ON MY 2001 VOLKSWAGON JETTA GLS VR6 GO BAD AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME. THIS CAUSES SUDDEN POWER LOSS WHILE ON THE ROAD AND COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS ON HIGHWAYS OR OTHER HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WHILE DRIVING THE CONTACT'S VEHICLE HIT SOMETHING IN THE ROAD AND FLATTENED THE TIRE ON THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE. THREE OR FOUR DAYS LATER WHILE DRIVING 40- 45 MPH THE DRIVER'S SIDE AIR BAG DEPLOYED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN. *AK
SEAT HEATER IN VW JETTA '01 BECAME VERY HOT (LIKE BURNING CIGARETTE ON BUTTOCKS) ON TWO DIFFERENT DAYS - AND FINALLY STOP WORKING. PER THE DEALER THE ELEMENT DID SHORT OUT - HAS DISCOLORED FABRIC - AND IS NOW BEING REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $275 -- THE COVER WOULD COST AN EXTRA $350+ WHICH I PASSED ON REPLACING. *JB
GIRLFRIEND GOT INTO CAR ON WEDNESDAY MORNING TO GO TO COLLEGE. SHE SHUT THE DOOR AND THE SNOW HAD BLOCKED HER VIEW THROUGH THE REAR WINDOW. SO SHE HIT THE POWER WINDOW BUTTON TO ROLL DOWN FRONT DRIVER SIDE WINDOW AND THE WINDOW FELL DOWN INTO THE DOOR AND WOULD NOT ROLL BACK UP. SHE TOOK THE CAR TO MOTORVATION MOTORCARS TO HAVE THE WINDOW TAPED UP UNTIL IT COULD GET FIXED ON FRI. TEMPERATURE WAS FRIGID AND THIS WAS VERY INCONVENIENT. THIS HAD HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE IN OCT. DURING HEAVY RAINS. HAD NO IDEA THIS WAS AN OCCURRING PROB WITH MORE THAN ONE JETTA. GOT ON THE INTERNET AND GOT CURIOUS TO WHY THIS HAD HAPPENED TWICE AND FOUND THIS WEBSITE. WHAT IF AN INFANT CHILD WAS RESTRAINED IN REAR SEAT GOING DOWN THE INTERSTATE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. PROBLEM SHOULD BE HANDLED APP. AT VOLKSWAGENS EXPENSE. *NM
TURN SIGNAL ON 2001 VW JETTA OPERATES AT RANDOM OR NOT AT ALL. THIS CONDITION BEGAN OCCURRING FOLLOWING THE REPAIR OF A MALFUNCTIONING BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH (RECALLS 06V183000 & 04V096000). SIGNALS FAILED TO TURN ON, OR TURNED ON WITH SPORADIC FUNCTIONING. VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE INDICATED THIS WAS CAUSED BY A SHORTED HAZARD SWITCH. HAZARD SWITCH WAS REPLACED FOR A COST OF US $131.55. DEALER INDICATED A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR THIS PROBLEM (RECALL 04V584000) HOWEVER INDICATED VEHICLE DOES NOT QUALIFY UNDER THE RECALL DESPITE HAVING AN IDENTICAL ISSUE. IF FIND IT UTTERLY RIDICULOUS THAT VOLKSWAGEN WILL NOT COVER THE COST OF REPAIRS GIVEN THAT THE IDENTICAL PROBLEM IS RECALLED FOR OTHER JETTAS. IN ADDITION I FIND IT MORALLY UNACCEPTABLE AS VOLKSWAGEN IS PUTTING DRIVERS AT RISK AS INTERMITTENT OR INOPERATIVE TURN SIGNALS IS A SAFETY CONCERN: FAILURE TO PROVIDE THE PROPER SIGNAL WHEN TURNING OR PERFORMING A LATERAL MOVE COULD LEAD TO A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING. *NM
WHILE DRIVING 2001 PASSAT 1.8 TURBO ON INTERSTATE WHEN STOPPING ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. TURNED CAR OFF, AND HAD IT TOWED TO DEALER, WHO INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A SUBSTANTIAL SLUDGE PROBLEM, AND ENGINE WILL NEED TO BE TORN DOWN AND REBUILT. PURCHASED CAR IN MARCH 2005 ,AND HAD OIL CHANGED BY DEALER, WHO NEVER INFORMED ME OF LETTER ISSUED BY VOLKSWAGEN, MODIFYING INFORMATION IN OWNERS MANUAL ABOUT DECREASING TIME BETWEEN OIL CHANGES AND TYPE OF OIL TO USE.*AK
I HAVE A 2001 JETTA AND IS HAS A CRAYON SMELL IN IT. IT GETS WORST IN THE HEAT. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE CORPORATE OFFICE AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. THERE ARE NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME COMPLAINT ON THE INTERNET HOWEVER IT CONTINUES TO BE IGNORED. IT IS TO THE POINT WHERE I GET A HEADACHE WHEN I'M IN THE CAR. I READ ONE COMPLAINT SAID IT WAS A TYPE OF PLASTIC WAX JETTA USES IN THE VEHICLE AND THAT PRODUCT IS TOXIC. I HAVE EXHAUSTED ALL OPTIONS AND DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE I CAN DO TO GET THEM TO DO A RECALL ON THIS MATTER DUE TO THE NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS. *TR
WHILE LEAVING TO RUN ERRANDS WITH MY 1 YEAR OLD CHILD IN THE CARMY 2001 JETTA GLX VR6 STARTED LOSING POWER AS IF IT WOULD STALL. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND EMISSIONS WARNING LIGHTS CAME ON. WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO MCKENNA VW THEY SAID I HAD A BAD IGNITION COIL, WIRES, AND SPARK PLUGS. WHILE RESEARCHING THE PROBLEM I FOUND THAT THIS IS AN EPIDEMIC LEVEL ISSUE WITH 2001 JETTAS. A VW PRESS RELEASE CONTAINED INFORMATION THAT THEY WERE ISSUING A RECALL, HOWEVER VW REFUSED TO INCLUDE MY CAR IN THE RECALL FOR REASONS THEY WILL NOT DISCLOSE. THEY ARE SELECTIVELY CHOOSING WHICH CARS TO FIX, ALTHOUGH THIS PROBLEM IS VERY WIDE SPREAD AMONG ALL THEIR VEHICLES. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THIS ISSUE AS CONSUMERS ARE GETTING FACED WITH $1100 BILLS FOR EACH IGNITION COIL DEFECT - I BELIEVE MINE HAS 6. THIS IS ONLY THE FIRST ONE, HOWEVER I'VE READ OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT MULTIPLE COILS ARE FAILING CAUSING NEAR-ACCIDENTS.
TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA GLS. THE ENGINE LIGHT STAYS ON CONSTANTLY AND THE DEALERS STATED THAT THE OXYGEN SENSOR AND THE SPARK PLUGS ARE THE CAUSE. THE CONTACT STATED THE SENSORS WERE REPAIRED PRIOR TO THE FAILURE AND A WEEK LATER THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS BEEN ON SINCE THE REPAIR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE IS A SAFETY RECALL, WHICH IT DOES NOT INCLUDE HER VIN. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER AND THE CONTACT IS REQUESTING A PART MALFUNCTION INVESTIGATION WITH THE MANUFACTURER. *AK
FAULTY TRANSMISSION CONTROL MODULE CAUSED TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. CONSEQUENCE: QUOTE OF $5135 FOR THE REPAIR. CAR WAS 6000 MILES OVER WARRANTY. *JB
ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE 2001 TDI WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP IDENTIFIED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY GLOW PLUG. UPON TRYING TO REMOVE THE GLOW PLUG, THE DEALERSHIP BROKE THE PART. NOW, THE ONLY WAY TO REMOVE THE GLOW PLUG IS TO TEAR APART THE ENGINE, AT A COST OF OVER $1,000. DEALERSHIP WILL NOT ALLOW ME TO TAKE THE CAR BACK EITHER. CALLED VW CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY ARE FINE WITH THE DEALERSHIP HOLDING MY CAR HOSTAGE. VW MUST HATE THE CUSTOMER.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY GOING ABOUT 70 MPH WHEN MY DRIVER SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAG DEPLOYED FOR NO REASON. I PULLED OFF THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND CALLED 911, THE OFFICER WHO CAME OUT TOLD ME THAT NO DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE TIRES OR BODY OF THE CAR. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR THIS TO HAVE HAPPENED. I TOOK IT INTO THE DEALER THEY HAVE SENT PICTURES TO VW AND SO FAR NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO FIX THIS, WHICH WAS 3 WEEKS AGO! *JB
TL* - THE CONTACT HAS A RECALL LETTER CONCERNING THE BRAKE LIGHT. THERE IS NO DEALER IN THE CONTACT'S AREA, BUT THERE IS A REPAIR CENTER. THE CONTACT CURRENTLY HAS NOT EXPERIENCED ANY INCIDENTS WITH HIS VEHICLE; HOWEVER WANTS TO PREVENT THE INCIDDENT BEFORE IT OCCURS.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL THE BRAKE LIGHTS FAILED TO ILLUMINATE. A NHTSA RECALL, #04V096000 WAS PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE CONCERNING, THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HOWEVER, THE RECALL DID NOT REMEDY THE PROBLEM. THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WAS ALSO REPLACED ON FIVE SEPARATE OCCASIONS IN ADDITION TO THE RECALL. A REVISED RECALL #06V183000 CONCERNING THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HAS BEEN ISSUED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHEN DRIVING 5-25 MPH ON A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY, THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED AND THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED. THIS OCCURRED WHEN THE VEHICLE HIT ANY BUMP OR POTHOLE ON 50-70 OCCASIONS. WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED, THE CRUISE CONTROL WOULD DISENGAGE ALLOWING THE VEHICLE TO SLOW. THE SERVICE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOT ALERTED. UPDATED 02/06/07. *JB
2001 VW JETTA. ENGINE TUNE UP (REPLACED SPARK PLUGS, SPECIFICALLY) AT 77K; ENGINE LIGHT GOES OFF AND IS IDENTIFIED AS MAF SENSOR. WARRANTY EXTENDED THROUGH DEALER TO 70K. THE CAR DOES NOT HAVE OPTIMUM FUEL EFFICIENCY WITHOUT PROPERLY FUNCTIONING SENSOR. SENSOR WAS CLEANED AT INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, WORKED FOR 4 DAYS, LIGHT WENT OFF AGAIN. THIS PART NEEDS TO BE RECALLED RATHER THAN JUST HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY!! IT'S EXPENSIVE!*JB
DRY ROT OF ALL 4 DOUGLAS TIRES. DURING STATE INSPECTION AT VOLKSWAGEN DEALERSHIP/REPAIR IN NORTH GREENBUSH NY - FAILED INSPECTION DUE TO ALL 4 TIRES BEING DRY ROTTED.
AS I WAS DRIVING THE PASSENGER SIDE AIRBAGS DEPLOYED FOR NO APPARENT REASON. I STOPPED TO CHECK FOR DAMAGE, DID NOT SEE ANYTHING, AND COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING IN THE ROAD. NOW I HAVE A CAR WITH THE HEADLINER AND FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BLOWN APART. I TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC. THEY FOUND A DENT AND TOLD ME THAT WAS THE CAUSE AND I SHOULD REPORT IT TO MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO BE COVERED UNDER MY COLLISION. THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER FOUND THE DENT IDENTIFIED BY THE DEALER SHOWED SIGNS OF AGE AND WAS NOT THE CAUSE. MAKING A JUDGMENT THE PRESENCE OF DIRT, ROAD GRIME AND SOME SURFACE RUST SUGGESTED IT WAS OLDER DAMAGE. IT WAS MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY INCORRECTLY ADJUSTING THE LIFT WHEN WORK WAS DONE UNDER THE CAR. FINDING NO OTHER DAMAGE THAT WOULD CAUSE DEPLOYMENT THEY CLOSED THE CLAIM AND MY CAR WAS NOT REPAIRED. VW REFUSES TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. *JB
TL* - THE CONTACT STATED THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH FAILED THREE TIMES . THE EXTERIOR BRAKE LIGHT FAILED AT 23,000, 40,000 & 42,000 MILES. WHEN THE FAILURE HAPPENED THE EPC LIGHT TURNED ON AND SOMETIMES IT TURNED ON INTERMITTENTLY. THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HAS BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES. *AK UPDATED 1/30/2007 - *NM
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER DRIVING 35 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE BRAKE LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS INDICATING ANY MALFUNCTIONS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO DETERMINED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN RECALL # 06V183000 NOR IN # 04V096000 DUE TO THE VIN. THE CONTACT WAS VERY CONCERNED BECAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHT DEFECT DESCRIBED IN THE RECALLS MATCHED THE PROBLEM THE VEHICLE PRESENTED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE ENGINE INTERMITTENTLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING AND THE BRAKE LIGHTS WERE INOPERATIVE. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE, AND DETERMINED THE SPARK IGNITION COIL AND BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH HAD MALFUNCTIONED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THERE WAS A NHTSA RECALL, # 04V096000, REGARDING THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS ALERTED. *AK UPDATED 10/30/2006 - *NM
I WAS DRIVING MY 2001 VW JETTA AND I BRAKED SUDDENLY. BRAKE LIGHT AND AUDIO ALARM CAME ON. TOOK THE CAR INTO GARAGE FOR REPAIR. WAS TOLD THAT IT NEEDED NEW ABS CONTROL UNIT. THE GARAGE CHECKED FOR RECALLS AND FOUND THAT THIS SAME PART HAD BEEN RECALLED ON OTHER VW MODELS. *NM
WE PURCHASED OUR 2001 JETTA 1.8L TURBO WOLFSBURG EDITION IN JAN OF 2003 FROM A CERTIFIED USED VW DEALER. WHEN WE DROVE OFF THE LOT, NOT 5 MINUTES LATER, THE TURBO SEEMED TO FAIL AND WE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER, EPC LIGHT CAME ON, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON. WE IMMEDIATELY TOOK CAR BACK TO DEALER AND THEY FIXED PROBLEM. EVERYTHING RAN FINE UNTIL SEPT 2003 OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, SHORTLY AFTER WE RECEIVED NOTICE THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL REGARDING IGNITION COILS. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE TO A LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY REPLACED THE COILS FREE OF CHARGE. THIS SOLVED THE LIGHT ISSUE FOR A COUPLE OF MONTHS, THEN IT CAME BACK ON AGAIN, THIS TIME WHEN IDLING FLUCTUATING BETWEEN 700 RPM AND ABOUT 1500 RPM AND STALLING ON OCCASION. WE TOOK THE CAR TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY RAN A DIAGNOSTICS, CLEARED THE FAILURES TO SEE IF THAT SOLVED THE PROBLEM, WHICH IT DID TEMPORARILY...EVER SINCE WE HAVE BEEN RUNNING DIAGNOSTICS TRYING TO DETERMINE WHY OUR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT KEEPS COMING ON, EACH TIME THE PROBLEM IS TEMPORARILY SOLVED. AT FIRST THE MECHANIC THOUGHT IT WAS THE AIRFLOW SENSOR, BUT ONCE THEY LOOKED CLOSER DETERMINED IT WAS A DIFFERENT PROBLEM. WE HAVE HAD CORROSION REMOVED, CONNECTIONS CLEANED, AND OUR LAMBDA SENSOR REPLACED. NOW OUR CAR CONTINUES TO RUN AND IDLE POORLY AND SPORADICALLY, THE CAR STALLS WHEN YOU SLOW, THE TURBO WORKS ON OCCASION, LOSSES POWER WHEN ACCELERATING, WHEN CAR FIRST STARTS IT BARELY MOVES WITH ACCELERATOR FLOORED, BRAKES ARE VERY SLUGGISH, SOMETIMES REALLY HAVING TO PUSH TO GET CAR TO STOP. NO ONE SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. EVERYTIME WE TAKE IT IN MULTIPLE ERRORS POP UP, LAST TIME THERE WAS 17 FAULT CODES, MECHANIC KEEPS GOING DOWN THE LIST OF WHAT TO CHECK HOPING TO FIND THE PROBLEM. THE BILL JUST KEEPS GETTING BIGGER AND NOTHING HAS BEEN SOLVED. RECENTLY THINK THAT THE ORIGINAL ISSUE AND CURRENT ISSUES ARE ONE IN THE SAME AS SYMPTOMS ARE BECOMING MORE SIMILAR. HELP! *NM
CATALYTIC CONVERTOR FAILURE AT 82,000 REPLACED CONVERTOR. *JB
AFTER RECEIVING THE VEHICLE FROM AN AUTO SHOP THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. I HAD THEM JUMP START IT AND THE AIRBAG DUMMY LIGHT CAME ON AS SOON AS THE CAR STARTED. IT BEEPED AND SAID AIRBAG FAULT ON THE DASH. THEN THE TURN SIGNAL SYSTEM STARTED TO SIMULATE THE SOUND OF THE TURN SIGNAL AS IF IT WAS ON. FIRST IT WAS AFTER I COMPLETED THE TURN IT WOULD STAY ON AND SPEED UP OR SLOW DOWN THE CLICKING NOISE. WITHIN A MONTH IT STARTED DOING IT WHILE I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT DOWN THE ROAD. I AM UNSURE IF THE TURN SIGNAL SYSTEM IS WORKING PROPERLY. SOMETIMES THE FLASHERS DON'T SEEM WORK AT RANDOM AS FAR AS I CAN TELL FROM THE DRIVERS SEAT. I HAD A DEALER RESET THE AIRBAG FAULT BUT THEY SAID THAT THEY "THINK" THAT WE NEED TO REPLACE THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH ON THE SIDE OF THE STEERING COLUMN. I'M NOT ABOUT TO SPEND 500 DOLLARS ON SOMETHING THAT THE DEALER ISN'T EVEN SURE OF THEMSELVES. *JB

THE BRAKE SWITCH LIGHT IN MY VW JETTA HAS HAD TO BE REPLACED THREE TIMES. WHEN THIS SWITCH IS NOT WORKING, THE BRAKE LIGHTS OF MY CAR ARE INOPERABLE, LEADING TO A GREAT RISK OF ACCIDENT. I HAVE HAD MY 2001 JETTA VOLKSWAGEN FOR 3 YEARS BOUGHT IT USED IN THOSE 3 YEARS HAVE HAD THE EPC LIGHT COME ON 4 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. ONE OF THE TIME THAT HAD THE DEALERSHIP FIX FEEL UNDER THE RECALL LIST. SINCE THEN IT HAS FAILED 2 DIFFERENT TIMES THE LATEST OF THE 2 ONCE IN NOVEMBER WHEN THE DEALERSHIP MECHANIC STATED WE KNOW ABOUT THE PROBLEM HERE IS THE PHONE TO CORPORATE TO COMPLAIN THAT IS ALL WE CAN DO. NOW IN AUGUST IT HAS FAILED AGAIN WHILE MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY FOR NO REASON. WHEN THE EPC LIGHT COMES ON THE BRAKE FAIL TO WORK AT ALL. LUCKILY MY WIFE WAS NOT IN A CAR ACCIDENT THAT DAY BUT COULD HAVE BEEN SINCE THE BRAKES DO NOT WORK. *NM
I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT ISSUES WITH MY 2001 JETTA. I HAVE REPLACED ALL THE WHEEL BEARINGS AND THE FRONT BEARING TWICE. I HAVE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE THE ENGINE COILS TWICE ON THIS CAR. NOW IN THE LAST 2-3 WEEKS THE CLEAR COAT HAS STARTED TO PEEL OFF THE CAR. THE PAINT IS NOT COMING OFF JUST THE CLEAR COAT. I CALLED THE VW CARE CENTER AND THEY RAN ME AROUND HAVING ME TAKE THE CAR TO A VW BODY SHOP, AND HAVING THE SERVICE MANAGER LOOK AT IT AND NEITHER ONE OF THEM COULD TELL ME WHY THE CLEAR COAT WAS PEELING. THEY BOTH DID RESPOND BY SAYING THE COULD BE SURE BUT IN MAY HAVE BEEN OVER BAKED AT THE FACTORY AFTER IT WAS PAINTED BUT OF COURSE NOBODY WANT TO ADMIT THAT BECAUSE THEN VW WOULD BE LIABLE TO FIX IT. SO IN CALLING THE VW CARE CENTER BACK THE PRETTY MUCH TOLD ME THE CAR WAS 5 YEAR OLD AND IT WASN'T THEIR PROBLEM ANY MORE BUT MINE. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'VE OWNED OTHER CARS AND NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE CLEAR COAT. GRANTED THEY WERE NOT VW CARS. I RECOMMEND NOT TO BUY A VW OF ANY KIND BECAUSE THIS COMPANY WILL NOT STAND BY THEIR FAULT. I OWN A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA WITH A 2.8 ............................................................................................................. LV6 ENGINE AND 5-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION. ON 03 AUG 2006 (MILEAGE: 84028) I HAD THE BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH REPLACED AT MY OWN EXPENSE WHEN THE ECL INDICATOR CAME ON. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN 19 MONTHS I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE SAME BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THE FIRST TIME WAS 10 NOVEMBER 2004 (MILEAGE: 68184) IN WHICH THE REPAIR WAS PERFORMED UNDER NHTSA RECALL #04V-09600 (20 FEBRUARY 2004). IN BOTH CASES THE REPAIRS WERE PERFORMED BY LITHIA VOLKSWAGEN OF THORNTON, COLORADO. THE FIRST SWITCH REPLACEMENT USED PART #1J0-945-511-D, WHICH WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE MOST RECENT REPLACEMENT USING PART #1J0-945-511-F. THIS IMPLIES A NEW BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH WAS DESIGNED BY VOLKSWAGEN BECAUSE OF FLAWS WITH THE DESIGN USED TO RESPOND TO THE NHTSA RECALL. MY COMPLAINT IS THAT THE SECOND INCIDENT OF THIS BRAKE SWITCH FAILURE SHOULD HAVE BEEN COVERED BY EITHER THE FEBRUARY 2004 RECALL THAT REPAIRED THE FIRST INSTANCE OR THE NEW RECALL 06V183000. SINCE THE BRAKE LIGHT IS A CRITICAL SAFETY FEATURE OF THE VEHICLE IT SHOULD BE DESIGNED TO FUNCTION LONGER THAN 19 MONTHS. ITS FAILURE PLACES MY FAMILY AND I AT RISK OF INJURY OR EVEN DEATH DUE TO A REAR END COLLISION BECAUSE OF VOLKSWAGENS INABILITY TO PROPERLY DESIGN A BRAKE LIGHT SWITCH. THIS SAFETY SYSTEM SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO OPERATE THE LIFE OF THE AUTOMOBILE TO PROTECT ITS OCCUPANTS. VOLKSWAGEN SHOULD MAKE A SERIOUS EFFORT TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM PERMANENTLY OR DEMONSTRATE THEIR COMMITMENT TO CUSTOMER SAFETY BY REPLACING THE SWITCH AT MANUFACTURER EXPENSE. WHEN I DISCUSSED THIS WITH VOLKSWAGEN CUSTOMER SERVICE (1-800-822-8987, REF. #60279193) THEY CLAIMED THIS SERVICE WAS NOT COVERED BY EITHER RECALL AND SINCE THE PART HAD PERFORMED PAST THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY IT WAS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO REPAIR THE SWITCH AT MY OWN EXPENSE. *NM
CONDITIONS: NORMAL DRIVING, APPROXIMATELY 25 MILES PER HOUR ON A CITY STREET. FAILURE: FRONT LEFT DRIVERS SIDE COIL SPRING FRACTURED THROUGH. THE LEFT CORNER OF THE CAR DROPPED, THE CAR JERKED SUDDENLY TO THE LEFT. THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN CATASTROPHIC AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS OR IF OTHER VEHICLES WERE PRESENT. VEHICLE IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE IN IT'S CURRENT STATE DUE TO THE LEFT CORNER BEING NOT LEVEL, SPRING MISSING PART OF IT'S LENGTH, STEERING (STRUT) BINDING. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS: VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA WILL NOT REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE PART AND IS NOT INTERESTED IN THE POTENTIAL LIFE SAFETY CONCERNS REGARDING THIS FAILURE. I DIRECTLY CONTACTED THE O.E.M. THE VEHICLE WAS THEN TAKEN TO A SERVICE DEALER, WHERE THE DEALER WAS ALSO UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. THERE IS A NHTSA RECALL # 02V031000 WHICH PERTAINS TO THE HYDRAULIC ANTILOCK BRAKES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DUE TO THE VIN.
I HAVE A 2001 VOLKSWAGAN JETTA. AT LEAST 2 OR 3 TIMES, I HAD MY EPC LIGHT SWITCH CAME ON ON THE DASHBOARD. EACH TIME, I HAD TO PAY OUT OF MY POCKETS TO GET IT FIX. IT TURNS OUT THIS IS A ONGOING PROBLEM FOR VW'S OF ALL YEARS AND MAKES. I'VE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH MY 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA GLX. I STILL WONDER WHY IT'S NOT A LEMON. HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE SWITCH WHICH WAS A RECALL. I ALSO HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. TECHNICIANS MADE DIAGNOSTIC CHECK AND SAID I NEEDED THE HEAT SENSOR CHANGED SO I DID. AFTER A WEEK, CHECK ENGINE LIGHT LIT UP AGAIN SO I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD ANOTHER DIAGNOSTIC CHECK WHICH I PAID FOR AGAIN 78 BUCKS. THIS TIME THE TECH'S SAID I NEEDED THE SPARKS AND WIRES CHANGED BECAUSE IT WAS SHOOTING BLANKS. PRE-PAID FOR THE PARTS AND WHEN THE PARTS ARRIVED, I BROUGHT MY CAR BACK TO GET IT FIXED SO I DID. LATER, I GOT CALL FROM THE SERVICE REPS AND SAID MY IGNITION COIL BROKE SO THEY HAD TO ORDER THAT AGAIN. AFTER EVERYTHING WAS SAID AND DONE. WHILE DRIVING AROUND TOWN PRIOR TO HAVING A FEW DAYS OFF FOR THE 4TH, I NOTICED A SQUEAKY BELT NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL. I CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL AND IT WAS ABOUT HALF FULL. I ADDED FLUID AND THE NOISE WENT AWAY. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE DEALER FOR THE DAY AFTER THE HOLIDAY. THE NEXT DAY ON THE 4TH SMOKE STARTED TO COME FROM UNDER THE HOOD AND THE VEHICLE WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO STEER. ADDING STEERING FLUID DID NOTHING SINCE IT SEEMED TO BE LEAKING OUT SOMEWHERE. I MANAGED TO GET THE CAR HOME AND IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE NEXT DAY. I ASSUMED IT WAS THE STEERING PUMP AND WAS NOT TOO CONCERNED. AFTER EXAMINING THE CAR THE DEALER FOUND THAT IN FACT THE STEERING RACK HAD BURNED OUT. I WAS QUOTED $2000 TO REPLACE THE STEERING RACK, TIRE ROD ENDS, AND POWER STEERING PUMP. MY SECOND OPTION SUGGESTED BY THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS TO BUY A NEW CAR. I DEMANDED TO SPEAK WITH THE SHOP MANAGER WHO FEIGNED CONCERN AND INTEREST IN HELPING ME RESOLVE THE ISSUE. HE PASSED IT TO THE LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE WHO REFUSED TO DO ANYTHING BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE. NOT THE FIRST TIME VWOA WAS LESS THAN HELPFUL I HAD THE WORK DONE AT A LOCAL GARAGE WITH AFTER MARKET PARTS FOR LESS THAN HALF THE DEALER QUOTE. *JB

2001 JETTA 4-CYL 2.0L, DRIVER SIDE POWER WINDOW REGULATOR HAS FAILED CAUSING THE WINDOW TO GET STUCK IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS. THE WINDOW MAKES A LOUD JARRING NOISE WHEN MADE TO GO ALL THE WAY UP OR ALL THE WAY DOWN AS THE WINDOW MOTOR DOESN'T SHUT OFF ON ITS OWN. I AM THE THIRD OWNER OF THIS CAR. THE PREVIOUS OWNER ALSO HAD SEEN THIS PROBLEM BEFORE.*JB
WHILE DRIVING IN SLOW ROAD REPAIR TRAFFIC ON I90 NEAR KIRTLAND/MENTOR OHIO, MY CLUTCH SYSTEM FAILED. WAS DRIVING JUST FINE KEEPING CAR IN 1ST GEAR AND AT A STOP IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC WHEN SUDDENLY THE CAR WAS STAYING IN GEAR EVEN WHEN REMOVING FOOT FROM CLUTCH PEDAL. CLUTCH PEDAL WAS STUCK IN FULL DOWN POSITION. -- COULD NOT EASILY SHIFT GEARS OR GET CAR OUT OF GEAR ONCE THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED, AND WAS FORCED TO KEEP STARTING AND SHUTTING OFF THE ENGINE FOR APPROX. 2 MILES UNTIL I COULD EXIT. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO CLASSIC VW ON TYLER BLVD IN MENTOR. HAVE BEEN TOLD IT IS THE CLUTCH MASTER AND SLAVE CYLINDERS MUST BE REPLACED AND THEN THE BRAKE LINES MUST BE BLED AND REFILLED. REPAIR COSTS WILL BE BETWEEN $700 AND $1000. *NM
