"WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED FROM A COLD START POSITION, THE VEHICLE FAILED TO STOP, WHICH RESULTED IN EXTENDED STOPPING DISTANCE. *AK *SCC. THE CONSUMER STATED THERE WAS DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE AS A RESULT OF THE VEHICLE NOT STOPPING. *JB
LAST WEEK ON 6-20-03 I PULLED OUT ONTO STATE ROAD 2 IN VALPARAISO AND MY 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI WOULD NOT ACCELERATE. I HAD MY 6-YEAR-OLD SON IN THE CAR AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO AVOID BEING HIT. THE CAR IS UNDRIVEABLE. A MECHANIC HAS DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY TURBO DIESEL SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM WAS INSTALLED NEW IN THE 2001 JETTA AND HAD PREVIOUSLY NEVER BEEN INSTALLED IN ANY OTHER VOLKSWAGEN. MY MECHANIC INDICATES THE NEW SYSTEM IS FAULTY AND AS A RESULT, FUEL IS NOT BURNED CLEANLY. THE ENTIRE ENGINE, INTAKE MANIFOLD, AND VALVES ARE CLOGGED WITH CARBON. I HAVE BEEN TOLD I NEED A NEW ENGINE. MY MECHANIC HAS DIAGNOSED THE SAME PROBLEM IN OTHER 2001 JETTAS AND STATES THAT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO HIM TO BE UNIVERSAL IN THIS YEAR AND MODEL. THIS CAR IS ONLY TWO YEARS OLD AND I OWE $15,000 ON IT. IT ONLY HAS 47,000 MILES ON IT. VOLKSWAGEN REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THERE'S A PROBLEM. I FEAR PEOPLE ARE GOING TO BE KILLED IN THIS CAR IF THE PROBLEM IS NOT IDENTIFIED AND RECTIFIED. *JB
JETTA 1.8 T 2001 HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP NOW AT LEAST SIX TIMES TO BE FIXED. EVEN THOUGH COILS WERE REPLACED, THE CAR CONTINUES TO SHUTTER AND STALL AT LEAST THREE DAYS A WEEK. THE DEALER ASKED FOR ONE MORE CHANCE TO FIX THE VEHICLE -- THEY FAILED AND NOW ARE SAYING I MUST BRING THE CAR IN TO "PROVE" THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM OCCURS ABOUT 70% OF THE TIME THOUGH SO MAY NOT DISPLAY SUCH A PROBLEM WHEN AND IF I DO BRING IT IN AGAIN. VW SHOULD BE PROFESSIONAL AND DEAL WITH THIS HUGE NATIONAL PROBLEM BETTER -- THEY EXPECT CONSUMERS TO BELIEVE THAT THEY WOULD SPEND WEEKS AND LOANER CARS TO FIX A PROBLEM THEY NEVER HAVE REALLY EXPERIENCED. YOUR CONSUMER IS NOT STUPID VW! THOUSANDS OF OWNERS WILL NOT BACK DOWN OR HO AWAY. I INTEND TO FILE A LEMON LAW COMPLAINT. *NLM
MY FUTURE DAUGHTER IN LAW OWNS A VOLKSWAGEN JETTA. WENT TO GAS STATION FOR GAS AND COULD NOT FILL THE TANK. TOOK THE CAR TO VOLKSWAGEN DEALER WHERE THEY ARE CHARGING OVER 800. DOLLARS TO PUT IN A NEW GAS TANK, SINCE THE CAR IS RELATIVELY NEW THIS SEEMS LIKE IT SHOULD BE A RECALL. OR AT LEAST UNDER WARRANTY. IF SHE WAS ON THE HIGHWAY SHE WOULD HAVE BEEN STUCK IN THE LANES WITH NO WAY OF FILLING THAT TANK...CAN YOU RESEARCH THESE GAS TANKS FOR THE SAFETY OF PEOPLE. *NLM
THE DRIVER'S SIDE WINDOW WHEN ROLLED UP MADE A LOUD POPPING NOISE. THE NEXT TIME I ATTEMPTED TO ROLL THE WINDOW DOWN IT FELL ALL THE WAY INTO THE DOOR AND DIDN'T COME BACK UP. I FEEL THIS PROBLEM IS A LITTLE RIDICULOUS CONSIDERING MY CAR IS ONLY 2 YEARS OLD.*AK
THE CLUTCH ON MY 2001 VW JETTA 1.8T WENT OUT SLL OF A SUDDEN. THE CAR WAS DRIVING COMPLETELY FINE (GEARS WEREN'T STICKY OR CLUTCH LOOSE) AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE CAR WOULD NOT GO INTO GEAR. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY QUOTED $1600 FOR REPAIR (NEW CLUTCH KIT AND FLYWHEEL). I HAD IT TOWED AGAIN TO A VW SPECIALIST AND HE SAID THE CLUTCHES ON THE NEW VW'S SHOULD LAST AT LEAST 100,000 (AND THAT IS FOR SOMEONE WHO EVEN RIDES THE CLUTCH, HE SAID IT SHOULD LAST EVEN LONGER). VW REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS (EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A WARRANTTY UNTIL 48,000 MILES) SAYING IT WAS DUE TO NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. MY JETTA ONLY HAS 32,000 MILES. SO, WE HAD TO COVER THE REPAIRS OUT OF POCKET. *AK
NAR 06/05/2003 *MR THE CONSUMER HAS HAD ONGOING PROBLEMS WITH THE REAR ROTORS AND BRAKES PADS ON FOUR SEPARATE OCCASIONS. * CB
THE FRONT DRIVER/PASSENGER SIDE POWER WINDOW GLASS CAME OFF TRACK AND FELL INTO THE DOOR. *AK THE PLASTIC TRACK CLAMPS HAD BROKEN AND CAUSED THE WINDOW TO GET STUCK IN THE OPEN OR CLOSED POSITION AND ALLOWED THE WINDOW(S) TO FALL DOWN IN THE DOOR PANEL(S). PER BULLETIN, THIS PROBLEM HAS EXISTED SINCE 1988. *SCC *JB
LOSS OF POWER IN JETTA WITH TDI ENGINE. I EXPERIENCED SERIOUS LOSS OF POWER IN MY 2001 VW JETTA TDI .. THE LOSS WAS VERY SUDDEN AND RESULTED MADE IT UNSAFE TO GET ON THE HIGHWAY. *AK I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND NUMEROUS NEWS GROUP POSTINGS ABOUT FAILING MAF SENSORS ON BOTH THE GAS AND DIESIL ENGINES. I VERIFIED THIS BY DISCONNECTING THE MAF AND DRIVING THE CAR. THERE WAS AN IMMEDIATE INCREASE IN POWER. I THEN HAD THE DEALER CHECK IT OUT WHEN I HAD THE TIMING BELT REPLACED. AT FIRST THE TECH THOUGHT IT WAS BECAUSE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS CLOGGING UP. HE CLEANED IT, BUT THE POWER LOSS WAS STILL PRESENT. HE THEN DETERMINED THE MAF IS THE PROBLEM. I PURCHASED A NEW MAF FOR $250 AND THAT RESOLVED THE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THIS PART CAN COST UP TO $400 FROM THE DEALER. THE DEALER CLAIMS THE K&N AIR FILTER I HAD INSTALLED CAUSED THE UNIT TO FAIL. HOWEVER, K&N SAYS IT IS DUE TO A POOR MAF DESIGN. I'VE SINCE GONE BACK TO A PAPER AIR FILTER. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO KNOW THAT IF THE PROBLEM IS THE MAF DESIGN, THAT VW OFFERS A BETTER MAF REPLACEMENT.
THE TURN SIGNALS HAVE AN INTERMITTENT FAILURE. THEY HAVE TURNED OFF, TURNED OF,F AND THEN RESUMED A FEW SECONDS LATER, OR FAILED TO TURN ON AT ALL.*AK THE VEHICLE IS A 2001 JETTA GLS WITH 40K MILES.
LEFT TIE ROD LOOSENED UP FROM THE OUTER PIECE FROM THREADS STRIPPING. *TT
2001 VW JETTA VR6 - CAR STARTED SHAKING A LOT UPON START UP AND LOST ALL POWER WHEN I TRIED TO PULL AWAY FROM AN INTERSECTION. WAS TOLD IT WAS A COIL PACK THAT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND THAT IT WASN'T COVERED UNDER THE RECENT VW SERVICE BULLETIN BECAUSE MY COIL PACK WAS FROM A SUPPLIER THAT WAS EXPERIENCING LESS PROBLEMS THAN THE ONES THEY ARE REPLACING (DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE PART HAD BEEN ON BACK ORDER FOR 2 WEEKS). THEIR PRESS RELEASES AND WEBSITE SAY THAT THEY ARE NOTIFYING ALL 2001 AND 2002 JETTA OWNERS WHICH IS NOT TRUE. MY CAR IS A 2001 JETTA AND I WAS TOLD THAT MY FAILURE WAS BAD LUCK AND THAT MY CAR AND OTHERS LIKE MINE WOULD NOT HAVE THE PART REPLACED BY VW EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE REPLACING THE SAME PART FROM A DIFFERENT SUPPLIER IN THE SAME YEAR AND STYLE VEHICLE AS MINE. I BELIEVE THEY SHOULD EXPAND THEIR RECALL/SERVICE BULLETIN TO COVER A WIDER RANGE OF JETTAS AS IT APPEARS TO ME TO BE A PART PROBLEM NOT A SUPPLIER PROBLEM. I'VE ALSO HEARD (VIA INTERNET MESSAGE BOARDS AND THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THAT I WENT TO) THAT THIS A COMMON PROBLEM IN 2000, 2001, AND 2002. THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS IF IT HAPPENED WHEN I WAS PULLING ONTO THE MERRITT PARKWAY OR A BUSY INTERSECTION INSTEAD OF OUT OF MY STREET. THE CAR JUST BOUNCES FORWARD A LITTLE BIT, SHAKES VIOLENTLY, LOSES ALMOST ALL POWER, AND DIES.*AK
WHEN MY WIFE WENT TO CLOSE THE TRUNK, THE REAR WINDOW LITERALLY EXPLODED AND THE BIGGEST PART OF THE GLASS WENT INTO THE CAR. *TT
MYSELF AND THREE OTHER PASSENGERS WERE NEARLY HURT ON THE HIGHWAY WHEN MY VW STARTED ACTING UP. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THEN THE POWER DWINDLE. IT WAS VERY SCARY! TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND IT WAS FOUND TO HAVE A DEFECTIVE IGNITION COIL. I CALLED VW AND INFORMED THEM OF THIS AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD REVIEW IT BUT COULDN'T GUARANTEE THAT THEY WOULD COVER THE COST. *NLM
2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA (COMPLAINT NUMBERS 30291114,30343786 AND 03092183) OUR 2001 JETTA STARTED CLICKING AND BLOWING WHITE SMOKE. WE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID IT WAS THE TURBO AND WOULD BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. WE TOWED THE CAR TO THEM ON MAY 19, 2003 AND THEY DID REPLACE THE TURBO. HOWEVER, THEY ADVISED US THE VEHICLE NEEDED A NEW ENGINE BECAUSE IT WAS STILL CLICKING. THEY SAID IT LOOKED LIKE WE HAD NOT BEEN CHANGING THE OIL WHICH IS WHY THE ENGINE WAS CLOGGED. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT THEN GAVE US THE RUN AROUND FOR A FEW MONTHS. THEY WANTED OIL CHANGE RECEIPTS, WHICH WE PROVIDED. THE MECHANIC TOLD US THE TURBO REPLACEMENT WAS DENIED BY VW AND THEY ATE THE COST. HE TOLD US THEY WOULD NOT DO ANY MORE WORK ON THE CAR. ON JULY 09, 2003 WE HAD THE CAR TOWED FROM THE DEALERSHIP.I WENT TO VW AND SPOKE WITH THE NEW SERVICE MANAGER, DONNIE FIELDER. THE NEW SERVICE MANAGER TOLD ME THEY HAD JUST REPLACED A GUYS ENGINE THAT HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS OURS. HE SAID THEY MESSED UP AND REPLACED IT UNDER WARRANTY NO QUESTIONS ASKED AND LATER DECIDED HE HAD NOT CHANGED THE OIL. HE SAID THEY COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR ANOTHER ENGINE AND WOULD NOT TOUCH OUR VEHICLE. I TOOK THE CAR TO ALTERNATIVE IMPORTS ON CHARLOTTE AVENUE. SAM (A.I.) SAID THE ENGINE WAS FULL OF SLUDGE. HE FOUND SEVERAL SIMILAR CASES ON A MECHANICS WEB SITE. HE ALSO FOUND THAT VW DID NOT PROPERLY COMPLETE THE TURBO REPLACEMENT. THE ENGINE IS THE SAME ONE (1.8L TURBO) THAT VW HAS ACKNOWLEDGED, AT LEAST IN THE PASSAT, HAS A SLUDGE PROBLEM. HOWEVER, THEY DO NOT ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE SAME PROBLEM EXISTS IN THE JETTA EVEN THOUGH IT IS THE SAME ENGINE. THEY EXTENDED THE WARRANTY ON THE PASSATS TO 8 YEARS UNLIMITED MILEAGE.
INTERMITTENTLY WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE FLOOR BY ITSELF. CONSUMER HAD TO PLACE FOOT UNDER THE BRAKE PEDAL TO RAISE IT OFF THE FLOOR. THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED NUMEROUS TIMES WHILE DRIVING. VEHICLE HAD BEEN TO DEALER ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, AND THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *AK
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET, AT APPROXIMATELY 25-30 MPH, BOTH THE DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS DEPLOYED FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. THERE WERE NO HOLES OR BUMPS IN THE ROAD AND THE WEATHER CONDITIONS WERE GOOD. APPROXIMATELY 7-10 MINUTES PREVIOUS TO THIS, WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, THE INSIDE LIGHT TURNED ON AND OFF, THE DOOR LOCKS WERE GOING UP AND DOWN AND THE CONTROL PANEL WENT BERSERK. IT STOPPED AS SUDDENLY AS IT STARTED. THIS HAD HAPPENED ONE TIME BEFORE AND THE DEALER WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM. *NLM
I OWN A 2001 VW JETTA WOLFSBURG ADDITION. WHILE PULLING INTO TRAFFIC FROM A STOP, I RAN INTO A POTHOLE (THE SIZE OF A MODERATE SPEED BUMP), WHICH IN TURN DEPLOYED THE PASSENGER CURTAIN AND SIDE AIRBAGS IN THE JETTA. I WAS NOT GOING MORE THAN 5 - 10 MPH, AND THERE IS NO DAMAGE TO THE CAR OR THE TIRES ASIDE FROM THAT PRODUCED BY THE AIRBAG DEPLOYMENT. (THE DEALERSHIP TRIED TO SAY THAT A BUBBLE, WHICH HAD DEVELOPED ON THE SIDEWALL OF ONE OF THE TIRES, SOME TIME AGO, WAS A RESULT OF THE IMPACT. I INFORMED THEM THAT THIS WAS ONE OF THE REASONS I HAD SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPT. FOR THE FOLLOWING MONDAY, A WEEK PRIOR TO THE ENTIRE AIRBAG INCIDENT) I CONTACTED THE NEAREST DEALER, WHO IN TURN STATED THEY WOULD CONTACT THE REGIONAL MANAGER. THEIR RESPONSE TO THIS WAS THAT "SINCE THE SENSOR INDICATED AN IMPACT, THERE WOULD BE NO ASSISTANCE FROM VW IN THE REPAIR OF THE DAMAGE CAUSED", AND THAT I SHOULD CONTACT MY INSURANCE COMPANY. I THEN CONTACTED THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE HOTLINE, AND WAS GIVEN THE SAME ANSWER. *NLM
MY 2001 VW JETTA JUST ROLLED 30000 ON THE ODOMETER. I HAVE HEARD THAT THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THE BRAKE PADS ON THE REAR OF THE CAR. I HAD TO PAY $350 TO GET THE PADS REPLACED AND GET THE ROTORS REFINISHED. I DON'T DRIVE THE CAR UNUSUALLY HARD AND DID NOT EXPECT THE BRAKES TO GO SO QUICKLY. ALSO, THIS PAST WINTER, ALL OF THE SPARK PLUGS WERE SHOT. THIS NOT SURPRISINGLY OCCURRED RIGHT AFTER THE WARRANTY EXPIRED. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS LITTLE PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR SINCE I BOUGHT IT. I AM LEANING TOWARD NEVER LOOKING TO PURCHASE A VOLKSWAGEN AGAIN. *JB
THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR FAILED FOUR TIMES AND WAS REPLACED. A RECALL LETTER WAS RECEIVED, AND CONSUMER WAS NOT SATISFIED. FUEL MIXTURE IN THE VEHICLE WAS STILL DEFECTIVE. ALSO, FRAME ON THE SEATS BROKE ON SEVEN OCCASIONS AND REPAIRED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *AK
I PURCHASED A NEW 2001 TDI JETTA. I HAVE HAD THREE MASS AIR SENSORS REPLACED, TWO OF WHICH WERE COVERED UNDER MY EXTENDED WARRENTY AT APPROXIMATELY 37,000 MILES, THIS LAST ONE WAS NOT. VW REFUSED TO ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR. ALSO, A DEALER PREVIOUSLY TOLD ME BACK IN AUGUST 2002 THAT I NEEDED $700.00 WORTH OF GLOW PLUG SENSORS AND GLOW PLUGS. I HAD THEM REPLACE THE SENSOR FOR $400.00. THEY DID NOT HAVE THE GLOW PLUGS IN STOCK. INCIDENTLY MY CAR STARTED EVERY TIME THIS WINTER IN THE FREEZING COLD. IT TURNS OUT THAT THEY WERE NOT BAD AFTER ALL AND THAT I NEEDED A GLOW PLUG HARNESS FOR $118.00., WHICH I FOUND OUT LAST WEEK WHEN IT BROKE DOWN ON ME AGAIN. IF I HAD REPLACED THE PLUGS I WOULD HAVE WASTED ANOTHER $300.00. LAST WEEK MY CAR DISPLAYED THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS IT DID WHEN MY MASS AIR SENSOR FAILED THE FIRST TWO TIMES. I TOOK IT TO THE FIRST DEALER THAT I COULD GET IN TO AND THEY TOLD ME NEEDED TO CLEAN MY INTAKE MAINFOLD, REPLACE THE FUEL FILTER, AIR FILTER, GLOW PLUG HARNESS AND MASS AIR SENSOR FOR $1200.00. I UNDERSTAND THAT THEY HAVE TO VW HAS TO REPLACE GREATER THAN 50% OF THEIR MASS AIR SENSORS. WHY ARE THEY NOT RECALLED. I DRIVE 100 MILES TO WORK EACH WAY AND THIS CAR HAS BEEN AN EXPENSIVE LET DOWN. I HAVE NO FAITH IN THE VW COMPANY AND ONCE THEY GET YOUR MONEY THEY DO NOT SEEM TO CARE AT ALL. THE CAR IS UNSAFE. I WILL CONTINUE TO PURSUE THEM UNTIL I GET SOME RESOLUTION.
THE CONSUMER STATED THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM HAD NOT BEEN RECTIFIED. *JB
I HAVE A 2001 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA GLS VR6. IN APRIL OF 2003 I EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH MY CAR WHERE ESPECIALLY IN WET CONDITIONS, THE CAR WOULD HESITATE AND MISFIRE THEN THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD BLINK ON AND OFF. IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE IT WAS DIFFICULT TO DRIVE BECAUSE IT WAS LOSING POWER. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS THE IGNITION COIL PACK WAS BAD. THEY EXPLAINED THAT THIS WAS AN EXPENSIVE PART AND THAT IT WOULD COST OVER $1300.00 TO REPAIR AND WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. I DID SOME RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT MANY SIMILAR VOLKSWAGENS WERE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEMS AND THE MANUFACTURER HAD A RECALL OUT ON THE COIL PACK. I CONTACTED VOLKSWAGEN AND THEY CLAIMED THAT MY ENGINE WAS NOT A PART OF THE RECALL BUT THAT THEY WOULD GIVE ME A COURTESY AND COVER THE COST OF THE REPAIRS. IN OCTOBER OF 2005 I BEGAN TO HAVE THE PROBLEM WITH MY CAR AGAIN. I BROUGHT IT BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP AND AGAIN THEY DIAGNOSED THAT MY IGNITION COIL PACK WAS BAD. I AGAIN DID RESEARCH AND READ SEVERAL ARTICLES ONLINE THAT VW WAS RECALLING THE COIL PACK FOR MY PARTICULAR MODEL. I CONTACTED VW AND THEY WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT BECAUSE IN THEIR SYSTEM, MY CAR DIDN'T QUALIFY. I EXPLAINED THAT THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ABOUT 20,000 MILES PUT ON THE CAR SINCE THE LAST OCCURANCE AND TO NO AVAIL WOULD THEY HELP ME OUT. THEY SAY THAT BECAUSE OF THE AGE AND MILEAGE ON MY CAR THEY WOULD NOT DO ANOTHER COURTESY AND BECAUSE MY VIN NUMBER DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR THE COIL PACK RECALL, IT WILL NOT BE COVERED UNDER THE RECALL. I HAVE HAD SEVERAL OTHER FRIENDS WITH VW JETTAS THE SAME YEAR AS MINE AND THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. WHY HASN'T VW LISTED MY CAR IN THE RECALL. HAVING THIS ISSUE TWICE IN THE SHORT LIFESPAN OF THE CAR SIGNALS THAT THERE IS A DEFAULT IN THE PART AND IT SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY THE MANUFACTURER. *NM
BACK BRAKES AND ROTORS HAD TO BE REPLACED ON MY 2001 JETTA GLX V6 WHICH WAS PURCHASED 08/01. I ONLY HAD 23,000 MILES ON THE CAR! AT MY 20,000 MILE SERVICE NO PROBLEMS WERE MENTIONED. MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON TOO. I HAD TO HAVE MY O2 SENSOR REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. THE WARRANTY DID NOT COVER THE BRAKES. I DO NOT RIDE THE BRAKES. 1 MONTH AFTER I BOUGHT THE CAR I NOTICED THAT WHEN I START IT IN THE MORNING IT MAKES A SOUND LIKE AND OLD JUNKY CAR WOULD. I HAD IT TO THE DEALER TWICE FOR THIS AND THEY SAID ITS NOTHING AND THAT'S THE WAY A V6 SOUNDS! IT ONLY DOES IT ON THE FIRST START OF THE DAY. I AM AFRAID IT WILL END UP BEING SOME VERY EXPENSIVE PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE. 9 MONTHS AFTER I HAD THE CAR THE ARM REST CAME APART AND HAD TO BE FIXED UNDER WARRANTY. THE ENGINE AND TURBO SEEM TO STALL OUT UNTIL I LET OFF THE GAS AND REAPPLY. DUE TO THE SPORADIC NATURE OF THIS, THE DEALER CAN NOT RECREATE. I BELIEVE THIS TO BE VERY DANGEROUS, WHEN MERGING ON A FREEWAY I EXPECT MY CAR TO PROVIDE CONTINUOUS ACCELERATION, NOT TO STALL OUT. GIVEN THE NATURE OF HONOLULU'S FREEWAY, IT IS MOST IMPORTANT TO HAVE FULL POWER DUE TO THE SHORTNESS OF THE ON RAMPS. I HAVE ALWAYS USED PREMIUM GAS AS REQUIRED BY VW, AND HAD THE FUEL INJECTORS CLEANED BY A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED AUTO SERVICE CHAIN, TO MAKE SURE I DID NOT HAVE ANY "BAD GAS" DEPOSITS. MY SPEEDOMETER STARTED BOUNCING UP AND DOWN. ONE SECOND IT WOULD REGISTER 25MPH THE NEXT IT WOULD REGISTER 100MPH. IT WOULD DO THAT FREQUENTLY. THE FUEL GAUGE ACTED FUNNY AS WELL. IT WOULD MOVE LEFT AND RIGHT. FINALLY THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING COMPLETELY. THE FUEL GAUGE WORKS OK NOW. I HAVE READ ABOUT WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. THE COOLANT MIGRATION SYSTEM IS FAULTY. THE COOLANT BOTTLE LEAKS FLUID ONTO THE ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS WHICH IN TURN ACTS AS A VACUUM AND THE COOLANT MAKES ITS WAY ALL THE WAY TO THE ECM. AFTER IT REACHES THE ECM IT MAKES ALL THE ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ACT FUNNY. THIS COULD BE DANGEROUS CONSIDERING IT MAY BE THE CAUSE OF AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT WHICH I HAVE HEARD. THE BRAKES GRIND INTO THE ROTORS, WHICH NEED TO BE REPLACED. INJURY DUE TO HEATED SEAT IN JETTA 2001. SERIOUS INJURY TO THE SACRAL NERVE AND SCIATA NERVE RESULTING IN COMPLETE "SADDLE" NUMBNESS FOR 4-5 WEEKS AND SEVERE NUMBNESS IN THE FEET FOR 5+ WEEKS WITH LASTING NUMBNESS IN SOLES OF FEET CONTINUING NEARLY ONE YEAR LATER.

(1) NORMAL DRIVING, REGULAR SCHEDULED DEALER MAINTAINANCE BEFORE THE FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH. THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION BECAME DIFFICULT TO PUT INTO GEAR AND NOISE STARTED TO COME FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. (2) CLUTCH FAILED AND IT BECAME VERY DIFFICULT TO ENGAGE TRANSMISSION. DEALER SERVICE ADVISOR RECOMMENDED LOOKING AT TRANSMISSION AND THEN DISCOVERED THAT THE CLUTCH HAD FAILED. IMMEDIATE DIAGNOSIS WAS THAT IT WAS DRIVER ERROR. LATER THAT DAY, AFTER EXAMINING THE PARTS THAT WERE REMOVED FROM THE CAR IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE SPRINGS OF THE CLUTCH PLATE HAD COME OUT OF THE METAL BRACKETS OF THE CLUTCH. DEALER CLAIMED THEY HAD ONLY SEEN THAT AS A RESULT OF MISUSE BUT DECIDED TO PARTIALLY WARRANTY THE PARTS AFTER DETERMINING THAT I HAD TAKEN EXCELLENT CARE OF THE CAR AND HAD EXHIBITED NO ABUSE OF THE VEHICLE. THIS FIRST INCIDENT TOOK PLACE WHEN THE CAR HAD 23K MILES ON THE ODOMETER AND I HAD OWNED THE VEHICLE SINCE IT WAS NEW. THE SECOND FAILURE WAS AT 73 K MILES IN MARCH OF 2005. THE SAME PARTS FAILED AND THE SAME DIAGNOSIS WAS MADE BY A DIFFERENT VW DEALERSHIP. THE CLUTCH FAILED IN THE SPRINGS BUT SHOWED NO OUTWARD SIGNS OF ABUSE OR EXCESSIVE WEAR. THE CLUTCH HAD APPROXIMATELY 50 K MILES OF USE BUT STILL HAD SIGNIFICANT MATERIAL LEFT ON THE CLUTCH PADS. THE FAILURE OF THE CLUTCH SPRINGS DAMAGED THE FLYWHEEL. AS RESULT I HAD TO PAY FOR A NEW FLYWHELEL, THROWOUT BEARING AND CLUTCH PLATE. AN APPEAL TO VW WAS REJECTED AND THEY SAID THAT THE DECISION WAS THE DEALERSHIP'S AND THAT THEY WOULD STAND BY THAT. I CONSIDER THIESE FAILURES TO BE CAUSED BY WEAK PARTS PROVIDED BY VW OF AMERICA. THIS SECOND FAILURE COST ME $1600.00 IN REPAIR COSTS.

WHEN I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THE FOLLOWING DAY, HE INFORMED ME THAT IT WAS A IGNITION COIL PACK FAILURE AND THAT THIS PROBLEM WAS REALLY COMMON WITH THE 1.8L TURBO ENGINES. HE ALSO INFORMED ME THAT THERE WAS A NATIONAL BACKLOG WITH THE PART AS THERE HAD BEEN MANY FAILURES AND THAT I WOULD HAVE TO WAIT ATLEAST 2-3 WEEKS BEFORE THE PART WOULD BE AVAILABLE. I WOULD CONSIDER THIS FAILURE TO BE A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE IF THE CAR HAD LOST POWER IN A BUSY ROAD OR A FREEWAY IT WOULD HAVE CREATED A DANGEROUS SITUATION.
