HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILURE. *TR
WAS DRIVING ON RESIDENTIAL STREET, APPROXIMATELY 25-30 MPH, AND CAR JUST LOST POWER AND STALLED. AFTER A FEW MINUTES IT COULD START AGAIN - BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE, EVEN IF GAS WAS PUSHED DOWN. AFTER A WEEK AT THE DEALERSHIP - THEY SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE. MY CAR WOULD NOT START BEFORE (AFTER ONLY HAVING THE CAR FOR APPROXIMATELY 7 MONTHS AND APPROXIMATELY 2000 MILES) - AND AFTER HAVING IT TOWED TO THE DEALER, THEY JUST SAID THE FUEL WAS GELLING. BUT THEY DID DO A COMPUTER UPGRADE AND SAID THERE "PARTICLES IN THE FUEL LINE" THAT THEY CLEANED OUT AND SAID I MAY HAVE GOTTEN "BAD FUEL". 1 WEEK AFTER MY 40000 MILE ROUTINE MAINTENANCE CHECK - MY GLOW PLUG LIGHT WENT ON AND I HAD TO HAVE A SENSOR REPLACED.
MY VW JETTA TDI 2009 STALLED IN TRAFFIC IN DEC. 2010, IT WAS ONLY A YEAR OLD WITH 23,000 MILES. THE DEALER SAID I MUST HAVE PUT REG. GAS AND NOT DIESEL. I SAID I HAD RECEIPTS AND HE COULD TEST IT TO PROVE I HADN'T. THE DAMAGE WAS $8,000 FOR A NEW FUEL SYSTEM INCLUDING TANK. IT WAS CALLED A HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP MALFUNCTION WITH FUEL SYSTEM CONTAMINATION. HE SAID THERE WAS METAL SHARDS THAT DISINTEGRATED THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. IT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. NOW AUGUST 7, 2014, THE EXACT SAME THING OCCURRED AND IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY BUT THE DEALER WILL COVER IT AGAIN FOR FREE. CHECKING ON-LINE, I SEE THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL OR WE SHOULD GET A NEW CAR. I ASKED DEALER IF HE COULD GUARANTEE IT WON'T HAPPEN AGAIN AND HE CAN'T! BUT HE SAYS VW WILL ALWAYS FIX IT FOR FREE IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. WHAT IF IT HAPPENS AND SOMEONE DIES IN AN ACCIDENT WHEN IT STALLS ON THE FREEWAY? WILL THEY DO A RECALL ONCE SOMEONE DIES?!!!!! *TR
FIRST TIME THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON WAS ONLY A YEAR AFTER PURCHASE(DECEMBER 2010; MILEAGE 27,341). I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP (SAME DEALERSHIP THAT I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE FROM) IN WA (DUTY STATION AT THE TIME) AND EXPLAINED THAT IT HAPPENED AFTER THE PASSENGER SEAT HAD BEEN MOVED. PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS" PASSENGER SEAT IGNITOR CONNECTOR FAILED." WIRING HARNESS WAS REPAIRED BY THE DEALERSHIP AT NO COST DUE TO VEHICLE STILL BEING UNDER WARRANTY. I WAS THEN DEPLOYED FOR 15 MONTHS AND HAD THE VEHICLE IN STORAGE. UPON MY RETURN, AND DRIVING THE VEHICLE AGAIN, THE AIRBAG INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON ONCE AGAIN IN APRIL 2012 WITH MILEAGE OF 29,052. ONCE AGAIN HAD THE VEHICLE INSPECTED AT VW DEALERSHIP IN TN (MY DUTY STATION AT THE TIME), WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE SAME ISSUE. PASSENGER SEAT AIRBAG CONNECTOR WAS REPAIRED (AGAIN) UNDER WARRANTY BY DEALERSHIP. IN AUG 2014, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE THIRD TIME. I PROVIDED ALL PREVIOUS MAINTENANCE/REPAIR HISTORY TO DEALERSHIP TO LET THEM KNOW THAT THIS WAS A PREVIOUS AND RECURRING ISSUE. ISSUE WAS DIAGNOSED AGAIN AS AN ISSUE WITH THE WIRING AND WITH THE VEHICLE NOW OUT OF WARRANTY, HAD TO PAY FOR THE WORK. AT THIS REPAIR I WAS TOLD THAT THEY COULD SEE WHERE PREVIOUS WORK HAD BEEN DONE AND WAS REASSURED THEY HAD FIXED THE PROBLEM FOR GOOD. IN OCT 2014 THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON FOR THE FOURTH TIME. AFTER THIS, I CONTACTED VW HEADQUARTERS AND EXPLAINED THE ISSUE WHO THEN ASSIGNED A "REGIONAL MANAGER" TO MY "CASE." I DEPLOYED AGAIN SHORTLY AFTER, BUT HAD MY MOTHER WORK WITH THE DEALERSHIP AND VW TO RESOLVE. FINALLY LOOKED FARTHER INTO OTHER THAN THE WIRING AND RESULT WAS HAVING TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE PASSENGER SEAT ($1100). VW REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE REPAIR DUE TO VEHICLE BEING OUT OF WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH ORIGINAL ISSUE BEGAN 4 YEARS PRIOR WHILE UNDER WARRANTY. *TR
TOOK MY CAR IN FOR THE 20000 MILE SERVICE. LAST SERVICE WAS AT 10000 MILES. WAS TOLD I NEEDED REAR BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS 300+ DOLLARS. SOMETHING IS WRONG HERE. I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT MY BRAKES SQUEAKING THE LAST THREE TIMES I BROUGHT IT IN TO THE DEALER. I WAS NEVER TOLD THERE WAS ANYTHING WRONG. I SPOKE TO VOLKSWAGEN CUSTOMER SERVICE THE 800 NUMBER, TOLD THEM THE ISSUES, THEY SAID THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED ON ALL 4 WHEELS WHEN STEPPING ON THE PEDAL, THIS RIGHT HERE TELLS ME SOMETHING IS WRONG, IF BRAKES ARE APPLIED TO ALL WHEELS THEN THE PADS SHOULD WEAR EVENLY, I WAS TOLD I WOULD HAVE TO REPLACE THE REAR PADS AND ROTORS AGAIN BEFORE I HAVE TO DO THE FRONT ONCE. I ALSO HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THE RPM'S SHOOTING UP VERY HIGH WHEN I START THE CAR AND NEED TO HOLD THE BRAKE HARD WHEN I PUT IT IN GEAR OR I WILL LUNGE BECAUSE THE RPMS ARE SO HIGH, AFTER ABOUT A MUINUTE I CAN RELEASE THE BRAKE AND DRIVE BECAUSE THE RPMS HAVE SETTLED DOWN. AGAIN I WAS TOLD THIS IS HOW THE CAR WORKS.
MY 2009 VW JETTA HAS BEEN PREMATURELY WEARING REAR DISC BRAKES AND EXPERIENCED A REDUCTION IN BRAKE PERFORMANCE. MY CAR HAS LESS THAN 20,000 MILES AND I ALREADY HAD TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER FOR NEW REAR PADS AND ROTORS AND IT COST ME OVER $400!!!! THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE THAT PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE WILL NOT TAKE IT INTO THE DEALERSHIP UNTIL MAY 30,000+ MILES. THIS SEEMS TO BE A VERY COMMON ISSUE WITH 07-09 VW JETTA'S AND IT SHOULD BE FIXED BY VW! *TR
(2009 VW JETTA TDI) ENGINE STALLS WHEN TRYING TO TAKE OFF FROM STOP. HAS HAPPENED A TOTAL OF FOUR TIMES, CAR ONLY HAS 32,000 MILES. *TR
THE VEHICLE WAS EMITTING A DIESEL FUEL TYPE ODOR. THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE WAS HEADED BACK TO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY UPON DISCOVERING THE ODOR. ON THE HIGHWAY THE VEHICLE DIED. THE ONLY LIGHT THAT ILLUMINATED WAS THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED INTO THE SHOP. THE DEALERSHIP AT THAT POINT REPLACED A LEAKING COMPONENT WITHIN THE FUEL SYSTEM. MY COMPANY AUTHORIZED THE PART REPLACEMENT. THE PART WAS REPLACED BUT THE VEHICLE STILL DID NOT START. LONG STORY SHORT, WE NEED A CYLINDER HEAD WHICH IS APPROX $7500 SINCE THE LEAKING FUEL HAD CAUSED THE TIMING BELT TO SKIP TIMING. THE VEHICLE AT THIS TIME IS STILL AT THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING OUR DECISION. THE ONLY THREE OPTIONS ARE REPLACE THE CYLINDER HEAD, ENGINE OR DECOMMISSION A CAR WITH LESS THAN 48K MILES. BASED ON THE INFORMATION FOUND ON THE INTERNET THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE HAS SEVERAL INCIDENTS FILED IN REGARDS TO LEAKING FUEL SYSTEM AND STALLING. *TR
GLOW PLUG LAMP STARTED BLINKING; RECEIVED ERROR MESSAGE - "ENGINE FAULT". BROUGHT CAR IN FOR SERVICE WHICH TOOK 4 DAYS. APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS LATER, THE GLOW PLUG LAMP STARTED BLINKING AGAIN AND THE SECOND TIME, THERE WAS AN ERROR MESSAGE THAT SAID "ENGINE FAULT WORKSHOP!" BROUGHT CAR IN FOR SERVICE AGAIN AND IT REMAINED WITH VOLKSWAGEN FOR 5 WEEKS. I WAS TOLD THAT THE ENTIRE DIESEL FUEL PUMP SYSTEM WAS FAILING AND HAD BEEN CONTAMINATED. VOLKSWAGEN IMPLIED THAT THEY THOUGHT I HAD RECEIVED BAD GAS, BUT I AM EXTREMELY CAREFUL ABOUT MAINTAINING AND FUELING THIS CAR AND CAN SAY WITH 100% CONFIDENCE THAT IT HAS ONLY RECEIVED LOW SULFUR DIESEL FROM REPUTABLE AREA GAS STATIONS. THE FUEL SYSTEM FAILURE DID NOT RESULT IN A CRASH - THIS TIME - BUT IT IS ALSO JUST THE LATEST IN A LONG LINE OF EXTENSIVE PROBLEMS THE CAR HAS HAD SINCE IT WAS PURCHASED NEW, INCLUDING STALLING, ELECTRICAL FAILURES, TRANSMISSION FAILURES, EXTENSIVE LEAKAGE, WATER DAMAGE AND OTHER PROBLEMS.
CAR IS 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI 2.0L COMMON RAIL INTER COOLED TURBO DIESEL.L ISSUE OCCURS AFTER DRIVING IN BELOW FREEZING WEATHER, AND ATTEMPTING TO RESTART AFTER WEATHER HAS GONE ABOVE FREEZING (SUCH AS DRIVING TO WORK IN FREEZING WEATHER, TEMPS WARM UP DURING THE DAY, OCCURS ON ATTEMPT TO DRIVE HOME). VEHICLE WILL START, THEN DIE AFTER A VERY BRIEF RUN OF 5 SECONDS OR LESS. RESTARTS WILL RANGE TO VERY LONG CRANKING BEFORE A VERY ROUGH RUN, OR NO CRANKING WITH ALL LIGHTS AN EQUIPMENT GOING OUT DUE TO VERY HIGH AMP DRAW ON STARTER MOTOR. WATER AND OIL IS NOTED DRIPPING FROM THE INTER COOLER PIPING AS IT LEADS TO THE ENGINES INTAKE. PIPING REMOVED TO ALLOW SOME WATER TO DRAIN OUT. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OF 1 REVOLUTION AT A TIME, CAR WILL START TO TURN MORE AND MORE IF A PAUSE OF 30 SECONDS BETWEEN ATTEMPTS IS ALLOWED. SUSPECTED WATER SUCKED INTO COMBUSTION CHAMBER AND HYDRO-LOCKING ENGINE. WATER IS SUSPECTED TO SEEP PAST THE PISTON RINGS INTO THE CRANKCASE WHILE PAUSING BETWEEN START ATTEMPTS. THIS IS PROVEN WITH FROTHY MOISTURE ON THE OIL FILL CAP AFTER EACH INCIDENT. SUSPECTED ISSUE IS MOISTURE FROM EGR SYSTEM GOES INTO INTAKE AIR, AND IS FREEZING IN THE INTER COOLER IN FREEZING WEATHER. WHEN WEATHER WARMS UP WHILE THE CAR IS OFF, THE WATER WILL POOL IN THE INTER COOLER PIPING. UPON ATTEMPTED RESTART, WATER IS SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE CAUSING ANYWHERE FROM SOME ROUGH STUMBLING TO FULL HYDRO-LOCK. INCIDENT HAS HAPPENED 6+ TIMES IN VARYING SEVERITY. ISSUE IS KNOWN TO HAPPEN TO CO-WORKERS CAR WITH THE SAME TURBO DIESEL ENGINE ON THE SAME DAY. NO CODES THROWN FOR ANY OCCURRENCE VIA OBD TESTER. ONE TIME, THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT FLASHED SEVERAL TIMES. *TR
MY 2009 VW JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI HAS WORN OUT THE REAR BRAKE PADS IN LESS THAN 30 THOUSAND MILES, WHILE THE FRONT PADS ARE AT 75%. WHEN THE CAR WAS NEW I NOTICED THAT THERE WAS MORE BRAKE DUST ON THE REAR WHEEL THAN ON THE FRONT. I WAS TOLD THAT THIS CAR HAD A SYSTEM TO BALANCE THE BRAKING BETWEEN FRONT AND REAR. THE EXCESSIVE REAR PAD WEAR IS A GOOD INDICATION THAT THERE IS NO BALANCE BETWEEN FRONT AND REAR BRAKING, AND THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE REAR BRAKING THAT COULD CAUSE THE REAR OF THE CAR TO SKID IN HEAVY BRAKING. *TR

TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA DIESEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WITHIN MOMENTS AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE IT STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. AFTER APPLYING A PRE- HEATER TO THE FUEL LINES, THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE SUCCESSFULLY. THE FAILURE PERSISTED ONLY DURING COLD WEATHER. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 29,000. THE CONSUMER WAS INFORMED HE WOULD HAVE TO ADD FUEL ADDITIVES TO GET THE STARTED. THE CONSUMER STATED NO WHERE IN THE MANUAL DID IT STATE THAT. UPDATED 02/02/11 THE CONSUMER STATED DURING AN UNUSUAL COLD DAY, WHEN HE ATTEMPTED TO START THE VEHICLE, IT IMMEDIATELY DIED. HE STARED IT AGAIN, AND IT RAN FOR A FEW SECONDS, THEN STARTED MISSING SEVERELY AND WOULD DIE AGAIN IF HE HADN'T STAYED ON THE THROTTLE. THE CONSUMER STATED THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP DISINTEGRATES, FILLING THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM WITH METAL BITS, AND NECESSITATING VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIRS. UPDATED 09/16/11*JB
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK, THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION DASHBOARD LIGHT ILLUMINATED WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN, TRAVELING ABOUT 20 MPH, WITH SLIGHTLY LESS THAN 1/2 TANK FUEL FROM THE SAME FILLING. THE LEFT TURN WHERE THE MALFUNCTION OCCURRED WAS THE LAST 1/2 MILE OF MY ~15 MILE COMMUTE TO WORK. IMMEDIATELY AFTER OBSERVING THE MALFUNCTION LIGHT, I COULD HEAR A METAL-ON-METAL GRINDING SOUND COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE ENGINE DID NOT STOP RUNNING THOUGH THE GRINDING NOISE PERSISTED FOR THE REMAINING 1/2 MILE OF MY COMMUTE. AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF IN THE PARKING LOT, I CONTACTED MY VW DEALER AND INFORMED THEM OF THE PROBLEM. THEY RECOMMENDED I TRY DRIVING THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR SERVICE, WHICH IS ABOUT 15.5 MILES FROM MY WORKPLACE. I STAYED AT WORK FOR THE NEXT 3 HOURS, AND AROUND MIDDAY SET OFF TO DRIVE THE CAR TO THE VW DEALER. THE CAR STARTED, BUT THE GRINDING NOISE PERSISTED AND THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITHIN 1 MINUTE OF STARTING. AT THE SAME INTERSECTION WHERE THE PROBLEM HAD ORIGINALLY STARTED, 1/2 MILE FROM WORK, I WAS FORCED TO STOP AT A RED LIGHT. WHILE STOPPED, THE ENGINE OPERATION BECAME VERY ROUGH AND THE ENGINE STOPPED RUNNING. I WAS ABLE TO RESTART AND LIGHTLY ACCELERATE WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED GREEN, BUT THE CAR STALLED AFTER ABOUT 10 SECONDS, THOUGH I HAD ENOUGH MOMENTUM TO GET OUT AND PUSH THE CAR INTO A PARKING LOT. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE VW DEALER. THE DEALER REPORTED THAT THEY FOUND SHARDS OF METAL THROUGHOUT THE FUEL SYSTEM, ESPECIALLY IN THE FUEL PUMP. THEY QUOTED ME VW'S STATEMENT ABOUT GASOLINE CONTAMINATION OF DIESEL FUEL, AND IMPLIED THAT I MAY HAVE INCORRECTLY FUELED THE CAR. HOWEVER, THEY TOOK A FUEL SAMPLE FROM MY TANK AND REPORTED THAT IT WAS NORMAL DIESEL WITH NO SIGNS OF CONTAMINATION. THEY AGREED TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THE CAR HAS RUN NORMALLY SINCE REPAIRING.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI. WHILE DRIVING 55 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHERE THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILED BECAUSE METAL HAD SPREAD THROUGHOUT IT. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 25,500.
DURING ACCELERATION ON A COLD ENGINE (FIRST MILE) THE ENGINE WILL OCCASIONALLY STUMBLE AND LOSE POWER ALL TOGETHER. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS IT HAS SIMPLY TURNED OFF. AS IT IS A STICK SHIFT, I ASSUMED IT WAS MY FAULT AT FIRST. NOW THAT I AM ACCUSTOMED TO THE CAR, IT STILL HAPPENS, PARTICULARLY THE STUMBLING IN THE FIRST MILE. IT FEELS AS IF IT TURNS OFF AND ON... NO WARNING LIGHTS COME ON, BUT IT DEFINITELY HAS NO POWER FOR ABOUT A SECOND OR SO AND THEN LURCHES. IT ONLY SEEMS TO HAPPEN IN COOLER WEATHER. NOW THAT IT IS IN THE HUNDREDS IN HOUSTON, IT DOESN'T HAPPEN. WHEN I TOOK IT FOR AN OIL CHANGE LAST MONTH (JULY 2011), THEY DID A "SOFTWARE UPDATE AS WELL." THAT MAY HAVE SOLVED IT, BUT IT ALSO AM EXPERIENCING SEVERELY DECREASED FUEL ECONOMY. IT WENT FROM AVERAGE HIGH 30S TO LOWER 40S TO THE LOWER 30S AND UPPER 20S AS OF LATE. I WAS TOLD THEY WILL LOOK INTO IT WHEN I BRING IT IN FOR THE NEXT OIL CHANGE.... *TR
VEHICLE LOST POWER AND STALLED AT BUSY INTERSECTION. GLOW PLUG FLASHING AND ENGINE CHECK LIGHT ON. TOWED INTO DEALERSHIP WHO THEN ACCUSED OF "FUEL CONTAMINATION". INCURRED COSTS OF TOWING AND RENTAL BECAUSE OF "CONTAMINATION" CLAIMS. ESTIMATED COST OF PARTS: 9,384.85. VOLKSWAGEN OF AMERICA NOT HONORING THEIR WARRANTY. 27,274 MILES. OVER 10,000 DOLLARS IN COSTS. CAR IS NOT FIXED. *LN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA SPORTSWAGEN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCKS WERE BROKEN. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE LOCKS HAD FRACTURED BEFORE AND WERE REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE PARTS NEEDED FOR REPAIRS WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 28,000. UPDATED 01/18/11 *BF THE CONSUMER STATED THE FRONT PASSENGER DOORS ARE NOT EXHIBITING THE SAME PROBLEM. ON 11/3/2010 I TOOK MY 2009 VW JETTA TDI IN FOR ITS 30,000 MILE SERVICE. I WAS CALLED AND TOLD MY VEHICLE WAS READY FOR PICK UP THAT EVENING. WHEN I ARRIVED THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME HE HAD BAD NEWS, MY FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED. THEY GAVE ME A LOANER CAR AND ASKED ME TO BRING IN MY LAST 4-5 FUEL RECEIPTS. DRIVING AT 20 MPH HEARD A CLANKING NOISE LIKE A SPOON IN THE GARBAGE DISPOSAL COMING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. MFD DISPLAYED ENGINE FAIL AND THE CAR SHUT OFF AND WOULD NOT RESTART. FILLED UP WITH APPROVED DIESEL FROM MOBIL A WEEK PRIOR. STILL HAD A LITTLE LESS THAN HALF A TANK. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO LOCAL VW DEALERSHIP. VW DESCRIBED THE PROBLEM AS FUEL CONTAMINATION. SUBSEQUENTLY DETERMINED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) HAD FAILED AND CAUSED SIGNIFICANT FUEL SYSTEM DAMAGE. VW REPLACED ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM UNDER VEHICLE WARRANTY. RESEARCHED THE ISSUE AND DETERMINED THIS WAS NOT AN ISOLATED ISSUE FOR THIS VEHICLE (2009 VW JETTA TDI). MOREOVER, THE NOTION OF 'CONTAMINATED FUEL' SEEMS TO BE A CATCH-ALL PHRASE THAT DETRACTS FROM WHAT MAY BE THE REAL PROBLEM OF FAILED ENGINEERING AS IT RELATES TO THE HPFP. LASTLY, THE IMMEDIATE SHUTTING OFF OF THE ENGINE MADE FOR A VERY UNSAFE CONDITION DUE TO THE INABILITY TO EASILY STEER OR ACCELERATE TO A SAFE LOCATION. DRIVING A 2009 JETTA SPORTWAGEN TDI ON I-280 WHEN LOW FUEL INDICATOR CAME ON. STOPPED AND REFUELED WITH DIESEL AT A STATION APPROXIMATELY 3/4 MILES FROM I-280. WHILE RETURNING TO THE INTERSTATE SPEEDS (DURING OR SHORTLY AFTER REACHING THEM) THE GLOW PLUG LIGHT BEGAN BLINKING, THE CAR LOST POWER AND WENT INTO "LIMP MODE" AND WAS INFORMED BY ITS COMPUTER THAT THERE WAS AN ENGINE MALFUNCTION AND TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER. WHILE EN ROUTE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS (WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO CONTINUE OF THE CAR WAS STILL RUNNING AND NO RED MALFUNCTION LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED), A MARKED LOSS OF POWER WAS OBSERVED (EVEN CONSIDERING LIMP MODE), AND THE CAR BEGAN SHUDDERING. WHILE ON THE OFFRAMP, DECELERATED TO A RED LIGHT AT WHICH POINT THE ENGINE DIED COMPLETELY AND COULD NOT BE RESTARTED. PROCEEDED TO BE STUCK IN TRAFFIC WHILE WAITING FOR THE TOW TRUCK (IT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNSAFE TO ATTEMPT TO PUSH THE VEHICLE ACROSS THE INTERSECTION OR BACK ONTO THE OFFRAMP GIVEN TRAFFIC CONDITIONS). DEALER DIAGNOSED AS HIGH PRESSURE FUEL SYSTEM HAVING FACTORY CONTAMINATION, THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM IS BEING REPLACED (TANK, LOW PRESSURE FEED PUMP, HIGH PRESSURE PUMP, INJECTORS), ESTIMATED COST OF PARTS $5300, WITH 14 HOURS LABOR. ALTHOUGH UNDER WARRANTY (~30,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER), THIS STILL LEFT ME STRANDED AND IT WOULD BE A VERY EXPENSIVE REPAIR IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN AT 60,000 MILES. THE CAR WAS PUT ON A FLAT BED BY MARTINEZ PD AND TAKEN TO A LOCAL SHOP WHERE NOTHING WAS DONE EXCEPT CALL THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP, DORITO BRO IN WALNUT CREEK CA, REQUIRED THE CAR BE FLAT BEDDED TO THEM. THE CAR WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER SHIP ON 10/27/2010 THE DEALERSHIP THEN INFORMED ME THAT THE BATTERY WAS SHOT AND THEY COULD NOT EVEN TROUBLE SHOOT THE PROBLEM WITH OUT A REPLACEMENT BATTERY. THERE HAD BEEN NO BATTERY FAILURE PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT. THE BATTERY WAS REPLACED AND THE DEALERSHIP COULD NOT TELL WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE CAR. ON 10/28/2010 THEY BELIEVED IT WAS THE FUEL PUMP. THE PUMP WAS REPLACED ON 11/1/2010 AND THE CAR COULD STILL NOT BE STARTED. THE DEALERSHIP AS OF 11/2/2010 HAS OPENED UP ANOTHER TECH TICKET TO TRY TO RESOLVE THE PROBLEM. 11/3/2010 WAS INFORMED BY DEALERSHIP THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED NEW BOLTS BECAUSE THE OLD BOLTS CAN NOT BE REUSED DUE TO THE SENSITIVE NATURE OF THE TDI MOTOR. OUR INITIAL ESTIMATE TO REPAIR (AFTER OUR EXTENDED WARRANTY PAID FOR INITIAL COMPONENT THAT FAILED AND VW PAID FOR 50% OF PARTS) WAS $7100. *TR

DRIVING A 2009 JETTA TDI - THERE SEEMS TO BE A TRANSMISSION ISSUE WITH THE CAR WHERE THE CAR WILL CONSTANTLY JERK FORWARD WHEN STOPPING AT A RED LIGHT OR STARTING ACCELERATION FROM THE LIGHT. AT TIMES, ACCELERATION OR BRAKING ON THE FREEWAY CAUSES THE CAR TO 'SHUDDER'. ALSO, 3 TIMES IN THE LAST 4 MONTHS, THE CAR HAS STALLED WHEN TRYING TO ACCELERATE FROM A RED LIGHT, AND THE CLUTCH DOES NOT 'GRAB' THE GEAR SOON ENOUGH. STALLING REQUIRES ME TO THEN PLACE THE CAR IN PARK, TURN THE IGNITION COMPLETELY OFF, AND THEN RESTART THE ENGINE BEFORE I CAN CONTINUE DRIVING. TAKING THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP MULTIPLE TIMES HAS NOT YIELDED ANY FINDINGS, WITH THE VW DEALERSHIP TELLING ME THAT THE PROBLEMS DO NOT EXIST AND THEY ARE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE ANY ISSUES, AND THAT ALL PARTS OF THE CAR ARE UP TO SPECIFICATIONS. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY UNDER 25000 MILES, AND WAS BOUGHT BRAND NEW FROM THE DEALER. CONTINUOUS COMPLAINTS HAVE NOT GOTTEN ANY. *TR
I RECENTLY PURCHASED A 2009 VOLKSWAGEN JETTA TDI DIESEL CAR WITH A 6 SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND 20,000 MILES. I HAVE NOTICE THAT THE CAR IS EXTREMELY EASY TO STALL WHEN ATTEMPTING TO ACCELERATE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEARS. IT SEEMS THE INJECTION TIMING MAY BE TOO FAR ADVANCED. I HAVE DRIVEN LOTS OF SIMILAR OLDER MODEL DIESEL CARS IN EUROPE AND ELSEWHERE WITHOUT ANY SUCH PROBLEMS. I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. MY 09 TDI WAGON WITH 27K MILES BROKE DOWN ON A ROAD TRIP ONE MONTH AGO. I WAS GOING 70 MPH ON THE DANGEROUS CALIFORNIA GRAPE VINE PASS WHEN I LOST POWER SUDDENLY. THE "ENGINE FAULT WORKSHOP" CAME ON THE DASH SCREEN. I LUCKILY COASTED TO A REST STOP ON THE BUSY AND DANGEROUS HIGHWAY. TO ADD TO THE DANGER WE CAME TO REST UNDER THE LEBEC WILDFIRE OF AUG. 24TH FLYING VEHICLES DROPPED FLAME RETARDANT OVER US. WE WAITED FOR THE VW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AMIDST THE SMOKE AND FLAME RETARDANT DUST FOR 2 HOURS. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER AND IS STILL IN THE SHOP APPROXIMATELY ONE MONTH LATER WITH SOME PART BEING ON BACK ORDER. STILL UNDER WARRANTY, VW IS GOING TO REPAIR THE FAULTY FUEL PUMP THAT IMPLODED AND RUINED THE FUEL SYSTEM IT IS A $ 6000 REPAIR COVERED UNDER WARRANTY BUT I AM VERY CONCERNED WHEN THE WARRANTY WILL EXPIRE IN 3K MILES. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION WE FOUND ON THE BLOGS THAT THIS IS HAPPENING WIDELY AND REPEATEDLY AMONG 09 TDI S WHEN THEY REACH A CERTAIN MILEAGE. FURTHER MORE THEY WILL BE REPLACING THE PART WITH THE SAME FAULTY PART. THE VW SERVICE DEALER REFUSED TO GIVE US THE OLD PUMP OR ASSURE US IT IS A DIFFERENT PART WITH A DIFFERENT PART NUMBER. THE REPRESENTATIVE I SPOKE WITH AT VW OF AMERICA IS AWARE OF THIS WIDESPREAD FAULTY FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. YOU GET THE SENSE THAT VW IS PERFORMING DAMAGE CONTROL AND ALMOST COVERING UP THIS DANGEROUS DEFECT. *TR
