NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving at approximately 35 MPH, the “Triangle with an Exclamation Mark” symbol was illuminated. The contact drove the vehicle back to the residence. The contact stated that while pulling into the driveway the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The contact stated that prior to the failure the vehicle was repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V604000 (Electrical System). The contact related the failure to the recall and the repair completed by a local dealer. The contact was not able to have the vehicle towed to the dealer because the vehicle was unable to be shifted into neutral(N). The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
I purchased a new 2019 VW Jetta GLI. Since the first day I bought the car four years ago, whenever I call someone or receive a call, and my iPhone is plugged in to the USB socket to connect to hands-free calling, the person on the other end hears a very big echo and voice lag. 100% of the time this happens. I end up having to hang up and call just using the speaker on my phone because no one can stand the giant echo reverb they hear on their end. I have brought the car into a few different VW dealerships to have this fixed and they never fix it. I paid $500 to a local mechanic to have the entire hardware unit replaced with a new VW --manufactured unit and the problem still exists. I googled to see if other owners of a 2019 VW Jetta are having this issue and it appears to be a very, very widespread and persistent problem across the entire brand. VW has known about this problem for five years! They do not fix it ever. They need to be forced into fixing it by a government agency like you please! This is a safety and legal issue, since I am not able to use the hands-free calling feature in my car. It is illegal in my state to use a cell phone while driving unless it is a hands-free call. If you google this problem, you will find thousands of owners with this problem. Please issue a recall as it is a safety issue and a legal liability. Thank you! My son was driving 45 miles per hour when he hit the sidewalk with both tires on the passenger side. Due to this, the curtain airbags were activated on both the driver and passenger side as well as the passenger seat bag, which I think should not have happened and this caused my insurance to determine it as a total loss.
During high temperatures, the electronics in my car will shut off after a few minutes of driving. I will receive 2 possible messages on the display. Sometimes it says, “Ignition switch off, safely stop the vehicle,” or “Starter system faulty, please service vehicle.”
When outside temperatures get too hot, the electronics on my car completely shut off. I turn the key and within 1 minute, the electronics shut off and the display reads a message stating "Starter system faulty. Please service vehicle". This is a hazard, as the brake lights shut off as well. This only happens when outside temperatures are hot. Furthermore, my car matches the year, model and even the specific ignition style as a current recall. However, the recall is VIN specific and my VIN is somehow not part of the recall.
The dashboard has light on with error message: Only exit vehicle in P position. Please service the vehicle. The light is on and off randomly during driving. Car is drivable even with the light on, but it will have the warning beep which is distractive for driver. There are multiple recalls from VW for other models/years with same error message. The gear shift sensor is malfunctioning in those recalls.
The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while driving at 30 MPH on a rainy day, the windows were foggy and the contact was not able to view the roadway. The contact attempted to veer to the left when the vehicle slid until it impacted a concrete barrier. The driver's front side and the front and back bumper were impacted, and the tire was torn. No warning lights illuminated. The contact called 911, and a police officer was dispatched to prevent other vehicles from hitting the contact. The police officer helped the contact push the vehicle. No injuries were sustained. A police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and an alignment was performed, the axle was repaired, a new windshield was placed, and a tire was replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was not destroyed. The vehicle continued to experience failures with the windshield, and the fuel pump was also experiencing a failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure, and a report was submitted. The failure mileage was 17,000.
Car with 37540 miles check engine light came on, per the dealership the Evap purge valve and the fuel line needs to be replaced. It looks like there is an open recall “ Emissions Recall Code: 20CQ” for the same car but for some reason it excludes my car.
I'm noticing that the driver side wiper blade is not locked in the arm. It's not getting lost, but I have to reinstall the blade when I clear the snow off the vehicle. No inspection because I don't have a reliable shop that can get it looked at in a timely manner. They want it left over night, but I live over an hour away and I don't have other travel options.
When accelerating from 1st gear to 2nd gear, the gear gets stuck.. Rpms spike high and the car won't go any faster until it gets unstuck. This has caused issues while in traffic, nearly getting ran over by cars behind me. I can't accelerate as normal when pulling onto a road, there's the risk that the transmission gets stuck and I can't move forward. This car is only 5 years old.
I took my car for ignition switch recall but after one month I have same issue tge car won't start
I live in Florida where it is very hot - one day my car doesn't turn on and I get the notice on my dashboard that says "STARTER SYSTEM FAULTY. SERVICE VEHICLE". It wont turn on again. I searched the NHTSA website and it seems there is an open recall already, however for some reason my 2019 Jetta is NOT included, and the dealership refuses to claim it under recall. NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V604000 I am submitting this complaint to include this batch of 2019 Jettas also affected.

Very similar to Recall #: 28H7 of VW. Was driving in hot temperature and dash displayed warning: "Starter system faulty. Please service vehicle" after a warning sound and message "Car Ignition Off. Please stop vehicle for safety." After this, all my electrical went out (from dash to blinkers to head lights to tail lights). However the car could still accelerate and brake.
This is the third occurrence of the vehicle engine shutting off without warning. Each time the instrument cluster displayed "Ignition switched off. Safety stop the vehicle" and "starter system faulty" warnings. After the first occurrence (see detailed report submitted on 07-12-24, NHTSA ID # 11601511) the vehicle was taken to a VW dealership on 07-12-24 in Albuquerque, NM. A detailed account of the problem was explained to the dealership and how all the symptoms matched the documentation on active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7). The dealership immediately said that even though the vehicle was the same year it was not part of the recall, and it would not restart if this was indeed the problem. We completely disagreed on this account as the problem as stated in the Volkswagen recall was related to a polyfuse which by design opens when heated and closes when it cools down. The dealership diagnosed the issue as electrical and replaced the battery ($400) and declared the problem fixed. On 07-30-24 and 07-31-24 vehicle experience same issue as occurred on 07-11-24. Each time the vehicle was parked in +100 F ambient conditions. Vehicle initially starts and when leaving parking lot, the engine suddenly shuts down. Instrument cluster displays same warnings "ignition switch off" and "starter system faulty". Attempts restart the vehicle are unsuccessful, but it appears after the interior of the vehicle has cooled sufficiently it finally restarts and continues to run. Please look into this issue. I see two recently reported issues occurring on 2019 Jetta's that the VIN is not included in the recall. It is not a coincidence when all the symptoms EXACTLY match those in the active Volkswagen recall. Volkswagen should not wait for a body count before action is taken, it is a known problem that is occurring outside of the initially identified recall. Once again this has the potential to result in a dangerous crash if the vehicle should shut itself off without warning.
While driving, the car's electrical system failed and came to a complete stop. Identified as a faulty ignition switch by the dealer's service center. I contacted Volkswagen regarding the issue and provided NHTSA's campaign number of 23V604 for a recall on the 2019 Jetta's for ignition switch failure. Volkswagen took my information but stated the recall did not include my car based on the vin number. I am reporting it here to see if there are other Jetta owners who have reported the same issue. The case number with Volkswagen is #06375019.
On 07-11-24 vehicle was started after sitting in parking lot. When driving vehicle in parking lot the vehicle engine suddenly shut off. Instrument cluster initially had "ignition switch off" then a second warning light showing "starter system faulty". The vehicle was restarted several times and the engine continued to shut off and display "starter system faulty". A short time later the vehicle was restarted and continued to run. At the time outside temperatures were in the high 90's with the indoor car temperature significantly higher as it was parked. A quick internet search revealed active Volkswagen recall #23V604000 (28H7) issued 08-29-23. Volkswagen was contacted on 07-12-24 and at the current time are not recognizing this vehicle as part of the recalled group. I was given case #06334060 for this call. The vehicle is experiencing the EXACT symptoms as stated in the recall notice. The vehicle is in the same year/model as the vehicles in the active recall. I believe that the current recall has not correctly identified all affected vehicles. This has a high potential of resulting in a dangerous situation as the vehicle shuts itself down with no warning.
The power steering on my vehicle malfunctioned, never giving me a warning as stated in the owner manual with a yellow steering light. As I was coming down a hill, the red steering light came on accompanied with a loud beep, and I lost power steering, nearly causing an accident. I had a mechanic look at it and the DTC codes he received were B200FF0 and B200F2 The dealership and independent service center I was recommended are unable to service the car for another 3 weeks. The only inspection done on my vehicle has been by a private mechanic There were no warning lights prior to the failure. The owner manual states a yellow steering wheel will illuminate to warn of an issue, then turn red if it's not addressed. This never happened. It went directly to red, and I lost steering during transit.
Driving on a highway when all of a sudden my car completely shut off and would not turn back on, had to sit in 110 degree weather with my children. everything was completely dead and we could not open the trunk to get our jumper cables.
I keep getting a message on my dash saying ONLY EXIT VEHICLE IN “P” Position. Please Service Vehicle.
The first time stalling while I was driving the car was stalling in the middle of the road. The second time drove to work park the car when I went to start the car it wouldn't start.
There is a yellow triangle caution light keep coming up and it stated that I should park safely and please service vehicle. I think its the shift level causing that warning ️ to appear.
The ignition switch failed while vehicle was in motion. Engine stalled and the electrical system shut off. There is currently a NHTSA recall on this vehicle (NHTSA recall 23V604, 2019 Jetta manufactured between Sept. 3, 2018, and Dec. 21, 2019) however Volkswagen says our VIN number is not included in their recall (VW recall number 28H7)
My starter and gear shift have been malfunctioning, the starter barely turns over and the gearshift sends out a warning to only exit the vehicle in ‘P’ position…
Without any warning whatsoever the entire electrical system goes completely off while driving the vehicle after 5 mins of it being on. This means that the lights including blinker and brake lights go off, air conditioning stops, and the entire dashboard goes off. The engine is still able to run. I am able to use the gas and breaks but I do not know what my speed is or any other information that is typically available via the dashboard. I have tried to do a reset when the problem occurs but that does not help the situation. The safety of myself and others is definitely at risk when this happens since the break lights and turning signal will no longer function at all. I can only use the hazard lights to indicate the hazard this presents. I’ve brought this issue up to multiple Volkswagen dealerships having paid the $200 diagnostics fee every time and they inform me that they are not recognizing the issue. I ask if this has anything to do with a recall that had happened to this car and been “fixed” in 2021 and they do not answer the question. I ask if it is possible that the recall was not fixed correctly and that is why I am having issues and they do not answer the question. I have also emailed customer support at Volkswagen worldwide and they state that my car never had any recalls done which is so incredibly false. I have the paperwork to confirm that it had a total of 6 different recalls done in 2021. I believe one of the recalls was never fixed properly and has only deteriorated worse since 2021.
The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 MPH, the vehicle made an abnormal beeping sound. The message "Faulty Ignition Starter" was displayed, and the vehicle shut off. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after several attempts and continued driving; however, the failure recurred while driving. The contact stated that the failure had recurred several times while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V604000 (Electrical System); however, the dealer and the manufacturer informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under the recall because the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
the ignition switch fails while the car is in motion, causing shut off the engine and electrical system, this lead to almost had crash.
The incident occurred twice the first time the car stopped in the intersection and a notice came up with ignition failure; start vehicle engine: have vehicle serviced. All the electrical systems shut down except for the radio. No lights, monitor, turn signals, everything shut off except the engine kept running. I changed all the spark plugs but that did not solve the problem. When it gets really hot here in Vegas the cars ignition just fails. They have recalled 47,000 of these 2019 Jetta's for this problem but not mine. They want me to dish out money for something that is obviously their problem.
The steering lock has miraculously failed and several other individuals have made this complaint. VW advised this is a known issue but has not issued a recall to have this fixed. Instead, we are forced to pay thousands to fix their mistake when it came to manufacturing
The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated while driving 35 – 45 MPH, the instrument cluster went blank, and the “Safety System Failure - Stop Vehicle” message was displayed. The contact stated that the A/C, radio, and hazard lights became inoperable. The contact pulled over and stopped the vehicle. After five minutes, the vehicle was restarted. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V604000 (Electrical System). The manufacturer was informed about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,413.
The car is making a weird sound when I break. It sounds like liquid is moving around and another sound. The central caution off in my car and the airbags too
VW Jetta should be included in the ignition switch recall. Problem started last year August on a trip out of state. After a day sitting in the hot parking lot on drive back car reported ignition switch failure and all electronics shut off and eventually the car shut off and wouldn't restart until the interior of the car cooled off. Once inside of car cooled down car was drivable again. Contacted dealer they stated they had not serviced another Jetta with this problem yet. They adivised to continue driving and see if problem occurs again. All winter (living in cold climate) it was no problem. In March as things warmed up problem occurred multiple times. Multiple occasions the car shut off in the middle of the road luckily no accidents occurred. Had car serviced at VW dealer, they were able to replicate problem and talked with VW field rep. who said to change the ignition switch. Since replacing the ignition switch my car has not had any issues anymore. I contacted VW Care and asked to add my car to the recall or reimburse my repair cost ($ 320) They refuse and insist that my car does not have the same problem as the recalled 2019/2020 models. I was fortunate that nobody hit me from behind when my car decided to shut off in the middle of a 55 mile an hour road. since the warning lights won't work when this problem occurs. This is a very serious problem and the remedy was to replace the ignition switch. I have the email conversation between the VW CARE rep as well as a copy of my repair bill. The last email I received from VW care states that my car is not part of the recall, that they can not add it to the recall and even though it presents with the exact same problem nothing can be done about it. Please let me know if you need any additional information Sincerely [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
VEHICLE SHUTS DOWN WHILE DRIVING. ALL ELECTRICAL TURNS OFF, DASHBOARD GOES DARK CODE READS STARTER SYSTEM FAULTY, IGNITION SWITCHED OFF, PLEASE SERVICE VEHICLE
Exhaust cam phaser cover bolt backed out. It hit the engine casing which caused the exhaust cam phaser to misfunction.disfunction. The car has not been checked by a dealer but is available for inspection.
The contact owns a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle in a handicapped parking space, the vehicle failed to stop despite the contact's foot firmly depressed on the brake pedal. As the vehicle continued to move forward with the contact's foot depressed to the floorboard, the vehicle drove over the parking barrier, knocked over the handicapped post, and entered the sidewalk. The vehicle eventually decelerated and the contact managed to shift the vehicle into reverse(R) and regain control of the vehicle. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights appeared on the instrument panel during the failure. Despite the property damage and emotional distress suffered by both the contact and the passenger, no injuries were reported and no immediate medical attention was needed. A police report was not filed and the air bags did not deploy as a result of the failure. The incident was reported to the store manager. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back home without incident. The manufacturer nor the dealer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle had yet to be diagnosed or serviced. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
Check engine light is on. When it’s checked it says a fuel emissions leak. Code is cleared and then turns back on a month later.
My son, [XXX] , bought a 2019 Jetta on [XXX] from Westside VW in St. Louis Park, MN. It was marked as a Certified vehicle. On [XXX] the clutch started slipping. Later that day it gave out completely, and had to be towed to Westside. After service looked, they said that the clutch was burned out, and that this is a “wear and tear” item like tires so that he was on the hook for the entire cost of repairs, $3,433.16. When we pushed harder, they indicated that the clutch had actually been replaced just before [XXX] bought the car, when it had 43,111 miles. It failed at 52,829 miles. He has been driving manual transmission vehicles for around 15 years. I first handed down a 2000 Passat 5-speed that I bought new, and he drove that until it fell apart with around 150,000 miles and the original transmission. Later he bought a 2015 Toyota Corolla with a manual transmission, and drove that for over 80,000 miles until it was totaled in 2023. The point is that he is an experienced driver of manual transmissions. Westside claimed that he caused the clutch to wear out in less than six months and 9,718 miles. Clearly there is a problem with the vehicle if it needs two completely-new clutches in that period of time and low mileage. We are very disappointed and dissatisfied with both Volkswagen quality and Westside VW for not standing by their product. [XXX] is terrified that, despite his most cautious driving, the clutch will again fail in six months or so. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I purchased 2019 Volkswagen Jetta RLine Turbo in 2022 with 30 something thousand miles with warranty. The car was and only serviced at Volkswagen dealership since purchased(oil changes, etc.). My daughter mentioned several times to the service people the coolant was empty and needed to be refilled they checked and said it probably do to the heat and use of AC. So we took car in for an oil change at 60,000-70,000 to a Volkswagen dealership in Tampa because oil light came on. They said that the engine oil had sludge all throughout the engine. How no way possible. The car had only been serviced at Volkswagen in Brandon were we lived since we purchased it. I couldn’t believe it. They had just serviced our car at Brandon location not even a month or so. They couldn’t find the problem is all I was told. I have spent over $3500 in 5 mths trying to have the dealership mechanics give us an answer. I spent $24,000 for this vehicle and doesn’t have 75,000 miles. They said it is a failure within engine! Help!!!
-It is not pumping gas correctly, it started out as while I pump gas it will stop frequently. I brought it to the mechanic and they replaced the evap system canister & now (while pumping) it stops even more frequently than before. Now I can only pump about 3/4 full & when I get to "full" it overflows. -I believe it is a safety concern because it is the fuel tank system. -It is available for inspection. -The problem hasn't been reproduced, it has been confirmed that 2019 VW Jetta GLI, 2019 VW Golf Sportwagen's, as well as some Audi's have been recalled for this problem. Has been confirmed that this is how it starts out. -No, there were not any indicators or symptoms prior to the problem beginning. It first started at the end of January of 2024.

when getting into the car the ignition switch failed to start 8 times. This happens every time I enter the vehicle where I live which is a cold climate. The recall is suspected only to affect the car in hotter climates but my car has been affected in the cold. It stalled while I was driving as well and I was able to turn the car back on. On the screen, it said failed transmission. This recall has been mailed to me 5 months ago and is still not yet fixed. I have been paying for my car on time monthly and am struggling to drive my car to the ignition switch failing. The car stalling did not hurt me and luckily no one was behind me. volkswagen has recognized the issue and sent out a recall in the mail but It's taking so long to fix and was not supposed to stall like this. the warning light was that there was failed transmission. my car has been inspected by Fitzgerald and they are unable to do anything about it because there is no remedy for the issue at the moment.
Rear coil spring broke while driving about 50 mph in a straight line. A loud bang was heard in the rear of the car. This was confirmed by the dealer during an oil change. I see that this was a recall for other 2019 VW Jetta models.
Manufacture hasn’t come up with repairs my car turns off complete while driving. I haven’t been able to drive it because I’m scared of being or cause an accident please help

I have already submitted a complaint but today I am submitting another one because I see the vw 2019 jetta recall for ignition switch does not yet have a remedy and today I experienced my engine stalled and the engine light is currently on. This recall increases the risk of crashing which can cause harm and poses a threat to overall safety. A solution needs to be made as I have work and school and overall errands and now am worried about driving a vehicle with a life threatening recall
