DRIVING ON HIGHWAY IN LEFT HAND LANE WHEN VEHICLE LOST POWER AND SUDDENLY DECREASED TO 10 MPH WITH NO PRIOR WARNING. DRIVER VEERED OVER TO LEFT HAND SHOULDER TO AVOID REAR END COLLISION. WARNING LIGHT APPEARED STATING POWER FAILURE! STATE TROOPER WITNESSED INCIDENT. THE NEXT DAY MY VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY REPLACING THE THROTTLE. I ASKED FOR THE OLD PART AND THEY WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO ME. *NM
IN OCTOBER 2003 AND JULY 2004, WHILE DRIVING MY CAR TO WORK EACH TIME WHAT APPEARED TO BE SMALL ROCKS/PEBBLES/STONES HAVE STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD OF MY 2001 VOLVO S60 2.4T IN THE SAME GENERAL AREA AROUND THE REARVIEW MIRROR. BOTH TIMES, THE WINDSHIELD SHATTERED IN THAT REGION AND CRACKS PROPAGATED FROM THE POINT OF IMPACT. THIS APPEARS TO BE A STRESS REGION IN THE WINDSHIELD THAT CANNOT WITHSTAND IMPACTS BY RELATIVELY SMALL OBJECTS. THESE TWO INCIDENTS HAVE RESULTED IN THE REPLACEMENT OF THE WINDSHIELD EACH TIME.*AK
ON HIGHWAY, CAR DECREASE SPEED RAPIDLY, POOR PERFORMANCE WARNING ON DASHBOARD , CHECK ENGINE, STALLS WHEN YOU STOP (LIGHTS, STOP SIGNS, ETC), BARELY MADE IT HOME. NO WARNING!!!!!! THIS HAPPENED JULY 2004 AND CAR WAS UNDER WARRANTY. AIR MASS METER FLOW REPLACED BY DEALER AS IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. SAME PROBLEM HAPPENED JULY 22 2005. SAME PART REPLACED FOR FREE ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS LESS THAN ONE YEAR SINCE THEY HAD REPLACED THE PART. THEY RECOMMEND A NEW THROTTLE BODY FOR $910 NOW THAT CAR IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY. WHY WASN'T THAT PART REPLACED LAST YEAR? THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY WITH CHILDREN IN THE CAR. VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION WHEN YOU SUDDENLY STOP ON A FREEWAY GOING 60 MPH WITH NO RESPONSE FROM THE GAS PEDAL. SINCE I HEARD THIS STORY, I CONTACTED VOLVO 1-800 NUMBER TO ASK WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO AND THEY SAID THEY WILL CALL ME BACK BY THE END OF THE WEEK. THE LOCAL DEALER SAID THEIR PHONE WAS RINGING ALL DAY AND THE SERVICE MANAGER WAS IN A MEETING ALL DAY. I HOPE YOU GET MANY REPORTS AS THIS HAS CERTAINLY BEEN A PROBLEM FOR US.*JB
WHILE DRIVING AT APPROX 40 MPH, I HEARD A POPPING NOISE AND A MESSAGE CAME ON IN THE DASH STATING "REDUCED EMISSION SERVICE". I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE AT A MAXIMUM OF 10 MPH FOR 5 MILES TO MY NEAREST VOLVO DEALERSHIP. MY MILEAGE WAS JUST ABOUT 69,000 MILES. THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED IT AS AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE AND REPLACED THE ETM. THE CAR HANDLED PROPERLY AFTER THE REPAIR, WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER THE 7 YEAR/70,000 MILE EXTENDED EMISSIONS WARRANTY. THE OLD PART WAS RETURNED TO VOLVO CARS NORTH AMERICA. *JB
(1) DRIVING ON INTERSTATE AT MAXIMUM LEGAL SPEED FOR SEVERAL HOURS. (2) ENGINE ABRUPTLY STOPS WITHOUT WARNING RESULTING IN LOSS OF POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. ATTEMPTS TO RESTART ENGINE WHILE MOVING NOT SUCCESSFUL. NEGOTIATE THROUGH TRAFFIC TO SHOULDER OF ROAD, NARROWLY AVOIDING ACCIDENT. (3) VEHICLE SAT ON SIDE OF ROAD FOR APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES AND THEN RESTARTED WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. WERE ABLE TO CONTINUE TRIP AND RETURN HOME. (4) TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP. ENGINE WAS CHECKED, BUT NO PROBLEMS FOUND. (5) THIS HAS OCCURRED TWO TIMES DURING THE FOUR YEARS WE HAVE OWNED VEHICLE .. *NM
WHILE AT A GAS STATION DRIVER OPENED THE GAS TANK DOOR, AND THE DOOR SHEARED OFF FROM THE PLASTIC HINGES. DRIVER WILL TAKE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS. *AK
THE CONSUMER BELIEVES THAT EH VEHICLE WAS INVOLVED IN A FRONTAL COLLISION PRIOR TO HER PURCHASING THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE HAS A CRACKED TRANSMISSION, POWER STEERING LEAK, OIL LEAK AND TWO DEPLOYED AIR BAGS. *JB *NM
TRANSMISSION FAILURE WHILE DRIVING 0 THIS HAS HAPPENED AT BOTH LOW AND HIGH SPEEDS. THIS IS THE FORTH TIME IN TWO YEARS THAT MY VOLVO S60 2.4 HAS HAD THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. THREE TIMES BEFORE IT HAS SUPPOSEDLY BEEN REPAIRED - BUT YET AGAIN IT THE TRANSMISSION HAS FAILED. THREE TIMES IN HEAVY TRAFFIC SITUATIONS - THREE TIMES PUTTING MYSELF IN JEOPARDY. VOLVO SEEMS INCAPABLE OF FIXING THIS VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM.AK
CONSUMER STATED THAT 6 MONTHS AGO HE REPLACED REAR BRAKES AND CALIPERS AT 15,000 MILES. CURRENTLY, CONSUMER TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALER FOR REGULAR MAINTENANCE, AND WAS TOLD THAT HE NEEDED TO REPLACE FRONT BRAKES AND ROTORS. *AK
PIRELLI FOUR SEASONS P6, TIRE SIZE P235/45 R 17, DOT NO. XBCUC236, I HAVE HAD THREE INSTANCES WHERE THE TIRES HAVE EXPERIENCED SUDDEN DEFLATION WHILE PARKING ALONG A VALLEY CURB. NO DAMAGE TO THE TIRES BUT HAD TO HAVE THEM REMOUNTED AND BALANCED. I HAVE ALSO HAD TWO INSTANCES WHERE THE TIRES HAD SUDDEN DEFLATION WHILE DRIVING, ONCE AT 35 MPH AND ONCE AT 70 MPH. IN BOTH INSTANCES, I WAS NOT IMMEDIATELY AWARE OF THE DEFLATION AND THE TIRES WERE RUINED AS THEY WERE DRIVEN FLAT. THERE WAS NO OTHER DAMAGE TO THE TIRES AND THERE HAD NOT BEEN ANY IMPACTS TO THEM PRIOR TO DEFLATION. THE TIRES WERE PROVIDED AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON MY 2001 VOLVO S60. *LA
DT: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING VEHICLE STALLED INTERMITTENTLY. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN TO A DEALERSHIP WITH THE SAME PROBLEMS FOUR DIFFERENT TIMES. THE THROTTLE BODY WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING THE SAME PROBLEMS AGAIN. THE REPAIRS WERE BEING DONE AT CONTACT'S EXPENSE. *AK
FOR BOTH OUR 2001 VOLVO S60 2.4T AND OUR 2003 VOLVO XC90 2.5T AWD, THERE HAVE BEEN UNSUCCESSFUL ATTEMPTS TO REPAIR A TRANSMISSION DEFECT (ESSENTIALLY SAME TRANSMISSION IN BOTH VEHICLES PER VOLVO TECH SUPPORT). BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD THERE IS. *AK INTERMITTENT/UNPREDICTABLE FAILURE TO ENGAGE 3RD IN TIMELY FASHION WITH RESULTANT LOSS OF ACCELERATION AS VEHICLE IS FUNCTIONALLY IN NEUTRAL FOR 0.5 TO 2.5 SECONDS. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, ESPECIALLY WHEN PULLING ON TO A HIGHWAY. WE HAVE EXPERIENCED 2 NEAR COLLISIONS (ALMOST BEING STRUCK FROM BEHIND). VOLVO TECH SUPPORT ACKNOWLEDGES A FLAW IN DESIGN CAUSING SERVO FLUID AIR LOCK IN THE 2001 MODEL. A NEW TRANSMISSION IS SCHEDULED TO BE REPLACED FOR OUR S60, BUT IF THE PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURING IN OUR 2003, WILL THIS CORRECT THE PROBLEM? THE XC90 THEY SAY CAN BE REPAIRED WITH "UPGRADED SOFTWARE" INSTALLATION (WHICH IS SCHEDULED FOR THAT VEHICLE) BUT THIS REMEDY FAILED WHEN PERFORMED ON THE 2001. WE HAVE LET THE DEALER KNOW WE FEEL BOTH VEHICLES ARE UNSAFE WITH THIS PROBLEM AND WE ARE NOW STUCK WITH THEM TRYING TO REMEDY BOTH GLARING SAFETY DEFECTS.
THE MILEAGE ON THE PERELLI P6 TIRES FOR VOLVO S60 T5 IS ONLY 11,000 MILES. DURING A CRUSING ON THE FREEWAY, THE DRIVER HEARD A LOUD "POP" NOISE INSIDE THE CAR. AFTER THE CAR WAS DRIVEN HOME (WITHIN 5 MILES), THE DRIVER NOTICE A FLAT TIRE SHORT TIME LATER. I WENT TO VOLVO'S DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT ON 6/25/03 TO SEE IF I CAN GET SOME ASSISTANCE OR EXPLAINATION ON THE CAUSES OF MY TIRE PROBLEMS. THE SAME THING HAPPENED 2 TIMES BEFORE ON THE OTHER TIRES. I WAS SURPRISED HOW LITTLE HELP I GOT FROM THE SERVICE CONSULTANT WORKING THERE. IT APPEARS THAT THEY DON'T EVEN CARE TO HEAR OR DISCUSS MY PROBLEMS. LATER ON, I FIND OUT INFORMATION FROM NHTSA THAT OTHER DRIVERS ALSO EXPERIENCED PROBLEMS WITH PIRELLI P6. SINCE I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING ON THESE FACTORY INSTALLED TIRES, I DECIDE TO REPLACE THEM THE FOLLOWING DAY.*AK
THROTTLE MODULE FAILED, LEAVING ME PULLING ONTO INTERSTATE, BUT UNABLE TO GO MORE THAN 20 MPH BEFORE CAR DIED. DEALER SAID THAT THEY HAD SEEN 3 OF THESE FAILURES THIS WEEK AND WAS A COMMON OCCURRENCE ON THE S60. *NLM
WHILE DRIVING, SUN ROOF FAILED TO OPEN AND INTERIOR LIGHTS WOULD NOT TURN ON. BROUGHT TO VOLVO DEALER AND SERVICE MANAGER CLAIMED THE EXXON/MOBIL SPEED PASS THAT WAS ATTACHED TO THE KEY CHAIN CAUSED THE ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE SUCH THAT THESE ITEMS COULD NOT WORK. IF THIS IS THE CASE, ISN'T THIS A HAZARD FOR THOUSANDS OF OTHER VOLVO DRIVERS WITH SPEED PASS AND VOLVO CARS? WHAT OTHER ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT COULD FAIL WHILE DRIVING? *CB
I RECENTLY BROUGHT MY VOLVO S60 FOR 15000 MILE SERVICE(MY CAR HAD 16200) AND WAS INFORMED THAT I NEEDED 4 NEW TIRES. HOW SHOCKED WE WERE. THE DEALER INFORMED US THAT THIS WAS PIRELLI AND WE MUST CONTACT THEM. I DID AND WAS TOLD TO SEE A AUTHORIZED PIRELLI DEALER. BROUGHT THE CAR IN WAITED AND THEN TOLD ME THEY WILL ONLY TAKE 20%OFF. WHILE I WAITED FOR TIRE DEALER TO RETURN MY CALL BUBBLES FORMED IN THE TIRES. THIS CAN'T BE SAFE . VOLVO PRIDES THEMSELVES ON SAFE CARS. HOW SAFE CAN THEY BE WITH BAD TIRES. PIRELLI AND VOLVO BETTER WATCH OUT. REMEMBER FORD AND FIRESTONE. THEY ARE ONLY A FEW MILES BEHIND. NO FATALITIES YET!!!*JB

WHILE DRIVING ON I 75, I SUDDENLY FELT AS IF I HAD NO CONTROL OF MY CAR. I SAID SOMETHING TO THE GIRL RIDING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THE CAR. WE WATCHED AS WE DRIFTED SLOWLY INTO THE RIGHT LANE INTO A HUGE SEMI!! AFTER HITTING HIS CAB (THANK GOODNESS WE DIDN'T HIT FURTHER BACK AND GO UNDER THE TRUCK), THE CAR WENT TO THE LEFT AND I STOPPED ON THE LEFT SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY. IT FELT A LITTLE LIKE WHEN YOU HYDRO-PLANE (IT WAS NOT RAINING), BUT I COULDN'T EXPLAIN WHAT HAPPENED. I THOUGHT MAYBE MY RIGHT FRONT TIRE HAD BLOWN OUT, BUT THE ENTIRE RIGHT FRONT HAD BEEN SHREDDED BY THE TRUCK. I WAS CHARGED WITH THE ACCIDENT FOR FAILING TO KEEP MY CAR UNDER CONTROL. I HAVE BEEN SUED FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE ($100,000) TO THE TRUCK AND NOW I AM BEING SUED FOR HIS PERSONAL INJURIES. I SENT YOUR INFO ABOUT THE VOLVO INVESTIGATION TO THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER. I WAS WITHOUT MY CAR FOR WEEKS. I BOUGHT THE VOLVO BECAUSE I WANTED THE SAFEST CAR AND NOW REALIZE THAT MY SON'S GIRLFRIEND AND I EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED THAT DAY. *NM
FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS HAVE BEEN REPLACED 4 TIMES NOW WITH ONLY 17,000 MILES ON VEHICLE (2 LEFT & 2 RIGHT).
UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE TIRE SHREADDED IN THE CENTER, CAUSING THE CAR TO GO OUT OF CONTROL AND INJURING MY WIFE AND MYSELF. I CALLED MICHELIN AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS IS THE NORMAL MANNER IN WHICH THE TIRE WOULD FUNCTION.*AK

THE FIRST ONE WENT @ APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES -MAJOR VIBRATION/LOUD RATTLE COMING THROUGH THE GEAR SHIFTER **HAS BEEN CONSTANT SINCE I DROVE IT OFF OF THE LOT...THEY SAY THAT IT IS NORMAL?? -DESPITE THE LARGE RED WARNING LABEL ON THE TRUCK THAT STATES THAT PRE-MATURE WEAR WILL OCCUR, THE VOLVO MECHANICS HAVE ADJUSTED THE DRIVELINE ANGLES NUMEROUS TIMES. EVEN IF THEY EVER DID GET THE NOISE TO GO AWAY, DAMAGE HAS ALREADY OCCURRED! -TRANSMISSION WILL NOT SHIFT PROPERLY... VOLVO MECHANICS SAY IT SHIFTS NORMAL AND THAT IT IS ALL IN MY HEAD!!!!!!? (TRUST ME, MANY MECHANICS WHO DO NOT WORK FOR THE MANUFACTURER AGREE WITH ME!!) -2 ECM COMPUTERS -3 ON BOARD DISPLAY COMPUTERS -3 SETS OF STEER TRIES (FIRST SET LASTED 90,000 MILES) -2 SETS OF WHEEL BEARINGS. EVEN THOUGH THEY HAVE BEEN ADJUSTED AT THE SPECIFIED INTERVALS! -THE PAINT ON THE HOOD BEGAN PEELING OFF BEFORE I GOT THE TRUCK HOME!! -PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LOCKS MALFUNCTIONED ON THE FIRST TRIP OUT!! -4 NEW BATTERIES HAD TO BE BOUGHT 1 DAY AFTER THE 1 YEAR WARRANTY EXPIRED!!! I HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE BATTERIES PRIOR TO THE WARRANTY EXPIRING, HOWEVER MANY VOLVO MECHANICS TOLD ME THAT THEY TESTED FINE...I HAVE PROOF THAT THEY WERE NOT OK! ...AND VOLVO SAYS THAT THIS IS NORMAL??!!
TUBE SEPARATED FROM TIRE CAUSING 3" BUBBLE ON SIDEWALL. PIRELLI WAS CONTACTED AND DENIED TIRE WARRANTY AS "ROAD HAZARD"; NEW TIRE WAS PURCHASED AND IDENTICAL PROBLEM REOCURRED WITH NEW TIRE IN IDENTICAL SPOT. PIRELLI CONTACTED ONCE AGAIN AND TIRE WARRANTY DENIED AS "ROAD HAZARD". THIS NEW TIRE HAS LESS THAN 2,000 MILES AND BUBBLE ON SIDEWALL IS IN IDENTICAL PLACE (ADJACENT TO WHEEL CLAMP).*AK (TIRESIZE: 17)
CONSUMER STATES WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE AT 25MPH, THE VEHICLE WAS IN A FRONTAL ACCIDENT WITH ANOTHER VEHICLE. CONSUMER STATES THAT BOTH OF THE FRONT AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. DEALER NOTIFIED. TS

MY 2001 VOLVO S60 STARTED SMELLING LIKE GAS INSIDE THE CAR. I TOOK IT TO THE VOLVO SPECIALIST WHO SERVICES MY CAR AND HE SAID THAT IT WAS CAUSED BY A CRACKED FUEL PUMP CASING. HE SAID THAT IN THE LAST MONTH HE HAS SEEN 5 OR 6 2001 VOLVOS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I SEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM IS BECOMING COMMONLY REPORTED AND THAT VOLVO ACKNOWLEDGES THE PROBLEM IN NEVADA AND ARIZONA. I THINK THEY NEED TO INCLUDE SOUTH FLORIDA. I CONTACTED THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE CAR AND THE SERVICE REP SAID THEY HAVE SEEN QUITE A FEW CARDS WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THAT WHILE VOLVO WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME, THEY - THE DEALERSHIP - WOULD REPLACE THE PART FOR ONLY LABOR ($130 X 5 HOURS) AND NOT CHARGE THE $500+ PART. *TR

LAST MONTH, I GOT INTO A CAR ACCIDENT. A FORD ECONOLINE IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION TURNED LEFT WITHOUT SEEING ME AND HIT ME IN THE DRIVER'S SIDE FRONT WHEEL AND ALL THE WAY TO THE BACK. I BROUGHT MY BRAND NEW 2001 VOLVO S60 BACK TO MY DEALER BILL GRAY VOLVO FOR REPAIR. I GOT MY CAR BACK JUST LAST WEDNESDAY (4/18). THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME EVERYTHING WAS FIXED EXCEPT THE MOLDING ON THE WINDOW. WHILE I WAS DRIVING BACK HOME FROM THE DEALERSHIP, I NOTICED THE CAR WAS QUITE A BIT OFF-CENTERED WHEN I WAS ACCELERATING WHICH DIDN'T HAPPENED BEFORE THE ACCIDENT AND THE REPAIR. SO I CALLED BACK THE NEXT MORNING INQUIRING, NOT ONLY DIDN'T THEY WORRIED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM, BUT ALSO ADVISED ME AND MAKE SURE THAT I'M AWARE THAT THIS IS NORMAL FOR FRONT WHEEL DRIVE CARS. DESPITE THE TECHNICIAN'S ADVISE, I WAS STILL VERY WORRIED, SO DUE TO OTHER PROBLEMS THAT DIDN'T HAPPENED BEFORE THE REPAIR , I SCHEDULED TO BRING IT BACK FOR A CHECK ON TUESDAY (4/24). HOWEVER, ON SUNDAY(4/22), AS SOON AS I DROVE OUT FROM MY APARTMENT, I HEARD A CRACK SOUND AND THOUGHT THAT WAS A FLAT TIRE. I STEPPED OUT AND CHECKED THE TIRES, NOTHING WAS WRONG. WHEN I BACKED UP THE CAR, MY FRIENDS SAW PARTS ARE FALLING OUT FROM THE CAR AND THE WHEEL WAS OFF THE AXLE HITTING THE FENDER. THIS ALL HAPPENED ON THE LEFT SIDE OF MY CAR WHICH WAS DAMAGED IN THE ACCIDENT, AND THE DEALER IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE THAT FIXED. THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TOLD ME THIS WAS CAUSED BY BALL JOINT DETACHMENT. HE SAID THIS MIGHT BE AN AFTERMATH OF MY FIRST ACCIDENT. AFTER INVESTIGATION, MY INSURANCE COMPANY TOLD ME THIS DEFECT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY FIRST ACCIDENT BUT MAY HAD BEEN HAPPENING BEFORE IT OR SOMEONE HAS BEEN WORKING ON IT FOR A PERIOD OF TIME TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN. BOTH THE SERVICE AND THE CLAIM REPRESENTATIVES SAID THIS COULD NOT BE IN ANY OF MY ABILITY TO CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN.*AK

I HAVE REPLACED 3 PIRELLI P6 235/45 R17 TIRES DUE TO BUBBLING OF THE SIDEWALL. I COMPLAINED TO THE DEALER ABOUT THIS AND THEY STATED THAT THEY KNEW OF NO PARTICULAR PROBLEM WITH THIS TIRE OR CAR MODEL. I THEN FOUND ON THE WEB THAT SOMEONE HAD ALREADY COMPLAINED TO THE NHTSA ABOUT THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE E-MAILED VOLVO AND PIRELLI AND I AM AWAITING REPLY. HOWEVER, THE SAFETY ISSUE APPEARS SERIOUS ENOUGH TO WARRANT MY CONTACTING THE NHTSA.*AK

WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT IDLE IT SHOOK. THE DEALERSHIP CLEANED THE THROTTLE, BUT THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. *NLM AFTER MANY TIMES OF GOING TO THE DEALER FOR REPAIRS, THE TIMING VALVES WERE FOUND TO BE A PROBLEM IN WHICH THEY WERE FRACTURED.
