TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 VOLVO S60. WHILE AT THE MECHANIC, THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR AND HOSE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE THE FLUID WAS LEAKING. THE MECHANIC NOTICED THAT THE POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LEAKING AGAIN WHILE PERFORMING AN OIL CHANGE. THE CURRENT MILEAGE IS 67,780 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
(1) AT AROUND 6:30AM, SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 2006, I WAS DRIVING IN SAN FRANCISCO GOING DOWNHILL. ONCE I HIT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL, I BEGAN TAKING A LEFT TURN. (2) IN THE PROCESS OF CONDUCTING MY LEFT TURN, MY CAR COMPLETELY STALLED AND ALL POWER STEERING WAS LOST. HAD THERE BEEN PARKED CARS ON THE ROAD THAT MORNING, I WOULD HAVE DIRECTLY HIT THEM DUE TO THE LACK OF POWER STEERING AS I SLAMMED ON MY BRAKES TO STOP FROM HITTING THE SIDEWALK. IMMEDIATELY, THE "REDUCED PERFORMANCE" LIGHT CAME ON AND FORTUNATELY, AFTER 10 MINUTES OF LEAVING MY CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BECAUSE IT WOULD NOT START, I WAS ABLE TO START IT AGAIN AND DRIVE IT BACK TO MY HOME. (3) I TOOK THE CAR TO ROYAL MOTORS, 1525 HOWARD STREET, SAN FRANCISCO, CA AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THERE HAD BEEN AN EXTENDED WARRANTY ASSOCIATED WITH THE ETM FAILURE. HOWEVER, VOLVO HAD INSTRUCTED THEM TO FIRST ATTEMPT TO CLEAN THE ETM AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY FAILURES AFTER CLEANING. I TOLD THE REPRESENTATIVE THAT IF THIS HAPPENS AGAIN, I MAY NOT BE IN SAN FRANCISCO AS I COMMUTE ON THE FREEWAY TO WORK IN PALO ALTO EACH DAY. THEY SAID THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO HAVE VOLVO PAY FOR THE ETM FAILURE. SO, I SIMPLY SAID OKAY AND RECEIVED MY CAR BACK THE NEXT DAY. *NM
DT*:THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE INTERMITTENTLY LOST POWER AND LURCHED FORWARD. THIS HAPPENED WHEN THE GAS PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED AFTER DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THEN, THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD WITH FORCE. THE PROBLEM BECAME CURRENT AND HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. *AK
ON TWO FAMILY-OWNED VOLVO S60 T5'S, ALL THE WHEEL BOLTS HAVE RUSTED (20 PER CAR, 40 TOTAL) TO THE POINT WHERE ON ONE CAR THE WHEEL BOLTS COULD NOT BE REMOVED TO CHANGE THE TIRE IN AN EMERGENCY SITUATION. ALL 2001 S60/V70/V70XC MODELS SEEM TO HAVE THIS PROBLEM WITH WHEEL BOLTS RUSTING. *NM
2001 VOLVO S60 T5 W/MANUAL TRANSMISSION STALLED ABRUPTLY WITH A "REDUCED POWER" MESSAGE ON THE DASHBOARD COMPUTER DISPLAY WHILE ACCELERATING ON A HIGHWAY ONRAMP. THIS WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, AS ANOTHER VEHICLE WAS BEHIND ME AND CAME CLOSE TO COLLIDING WITH MY VEHICLE DUE TO IMMEDIATE DECELERATION W/NO WARNING/BRAKE LIGHTS UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO REACT TO THE UNEXPECTED SITUATION. AFTER PULLING OVER, STOPPING THE CAR FOR A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTING, I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING IT, BUT IT SEEMED TO RUN ROUGH AND "STUTTER" A BIT FOR THE REST OF THE TRIP. DROVE TO LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP FIRST THING NEXT MORNING AND RESULTING DIAGNOSIS & REPAIR WAS "THROTTLE UNIT INTERNAL FAULT" AND REPLACEMENT OF THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM). ENGINE FAULT CODES WERE: ECM 915D, 916D, 904C, 928A & 903F. REPAIRS TOTALED $1,012.03. *JB
I COMMUTE APPROXIMATELY 30 MILES TO WORK. DURING MY COMMUTE ON NOV. 2, 2005 THERE WAS NOTHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY. ALL GAUGES READING WITHIN NORMAL LIMITS. I PARKED MY CAR. WENT INSIDE MY PLACE OF WORK. WITHIN 7 (SEVEN) MINUTES I WAS NOTIFIED BY A COWORKER THAT MY CAR WAS ON FIRE. THE RESULTING ENGINE FIRE TOTALED MY 2001 S60 T5 VOLVO. THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT OF THE ENGINE EXCEPT THE ENGINE BLOCK SITTING UPON THE TRANSMISSION. *JB
I WAS ON A LONG TRIP BACK HOME ON 11/29/05 WHEN I NOTICED MY 2001 VOLVO STARTED SURGING AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES OF THIS IT SHOWED ME A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND A MESSAGE APPEARED SAYING " PERFORMANCE REDUCED ". THE CAR WAS BASICALLY SHUTTING DOWN. I WAS DOING 75 MPH AT THE TIME AND HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER FROM THE LEFT LANE 4 LANES OVER TO THE RIGHT. THIS WAS A LITTLE SCARY DOING 75 MPH. I SAT ON THE SHOULDER FOR ABOUT 2 MINUTES AND TRIED RESTARTING THE CAR. I SEEMED FINE SO I CONTINUED ON. THE SAME THING HAPPENED 2 MORE TIMES ON THE TRIP HOME. THE FOLLOWING MONDAY 11/1/05 I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A RAMSEY VOLVO TO HAVE IT LOOKED AT. THEY TOLD ME THE ETM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I HAD THEM REPLACE IT. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS THAT IT SEEMS AS IF THIS IS VERY COMMON AMONG VOLVO'S WITH THE ETM AND IT IS QUITE DANGEROUS WHEN THEY FAIL. IF AS MANY FAIL AS I SEE ON THE INTERNET I FEEL VOLVO SHOULD RECALL THE ETM AND FIX IT.*JB
I OWN A 2001 VOLVO S60 WITH A LITTLE OVER 18,000 MILES ON THE VEHICLE. ON 10-19-2005, I WAS STOPPED AT AN INTERSECTION WAITING FOR THE LEFT LANE TURN SIGNAL. WHEN THE SIGNAL TURNED GREEN, I PROCEEDED INTO THE INTERSECTION AND NOTICED THAT MY CAR STARTED TO LOSE POWER EVEN THOUGH MY FOOT WAS ON THE ACCELERATOR THROTTLE. I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE ACCELERATOR THROTTLE, BUT THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO LOSE SPEED, THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE VEHICLE LURCHED FORWARD AS IF TO KICK IN AND THE ACCELERATION RESUMED. IT WAS ALARMING, BECAUSE IF I HAD BEEN ON A FREEWAY OR HAD BEEN IN A SITUATION WHEREBY I HAD TO PASS A SLOW DRIVER ON A TWO LANE HIGHWAY, I COULD HAVE BEEN IN SOME SERIOUS TROUBLE. AGAIN, MY CAR HAS VERY LOW MILEAGE FOR A 2001 VEHICLE. I WOULD APPRECIATE BEING INCLUDED IN ANY INVESTIGATION THAT MAY UNCOVER A POSSIBLE DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE REGARDING THIS MATTER. DT: THE CONTACT STATED HIS VEHICLE HESITATED AND SURGED. RIGHT BEFORE THE VEHICLE HESITATED OR SURGED IT LOST POWER. IT STARTED AS AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM BUT IS NOW OCCURRING DAILY. THE RATE OF SPEED DOES NOT SEEM TO BE A FACTOR. HOWEVER, IT DOES OFTEN OCCUR BETWEEN 40 AND 50 MPH. BUT, IT HAS OCCURRED AT LOWER SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE STALLED TWICE. THE FIRST TIME THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART AND WAS TOWED INTO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALER CLEANED THE ELECTRIC CONTROL (ETM), AND THIS SOLVED THE PROBLEM FOR ONE WEEK. THE SECOND TIME THE VEHICLE STALLED THE CONTACT TURNED THE IGNITION OFF AND WAITED TWENTY MINUTES. THE VEHICLE IMMEDIATELY RESTARTED, AND HE WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE HOME. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY IN THE DEALERSHIP AWAITING DIAGNOSTIC TESTING AND REPAIRS. THE DEALER HAS BEEN IN CONTACT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THEY ARE DISCUSSING REPLACING THE ETM AND OTHER PROCEDURES TO FIX THE PROBLEM. *AK
VOLVO S60 2001 THE VEHICLE EXHIBITS A SUDDEN LOSS OF SPEED AND ENGINE POWER. THIS HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING IN HIGHWAY TRAFFIC WITHOUT WARNING. I HAVE HAD THE VEHICLE TO THE VOLVO DEALER TWICE AN THEY CAN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I SUSPECT THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL IS THE PROBLEM. *NM
CAR WOULD SUDDENLY LOSE POWER, CAUSING UNSAFE SITUATIONS IN TRAFFIC. WARNING LIGHT WOULD COME ON ALONG WITH CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND MESSAGE SAYING "REDUCED PERFORMANCE". FAILURE WAS INTERMITTENT AT FIRST AND INSTRUMENT LIGHTS WOULD GO BACK TO NORMAL. *NM
FIRST EVENT--NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION- 33000 MILES 48 MONTHS OLD. STALLED TURNING LEFT THROUGH BUSY INTERSECTION AT RUSH HOUR--LOSS POWER STEERING CAPABILITY ALMOST RAN OFF ROAD TOWARD LIGHT POST--NO ACCIDENT OCCURRED. (MAY, 2005) NO REPAIRS. SECOND EVENT--NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION (35,250)-STALLED GOING THROUGH INTERSECTION OCT. 4 2005. NO ACCIDENT.--ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULATOR CLEANED --{GIVEN OPTION OF CLEANING $220 (WITH NO GUARANTEE) OR REPLACING FOR $970 (STILL WITH NO GUARANTEE)} *NM
STOPPED TO DROP OFF PASSENGER, WHEN ATTEMPTED TO PULL AWAY, TRANSMISSION FAILED TO ENGAGE. TURNED VEHICLE OFF TO CHECK IT. ON RESTART ENGAGED FINE. APPROX 1/2 MILE DOWN THE ROAD, TRANSMISSION FAILED AGAIN WHILE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. COASTED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, TURNED VEHICLE OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES, ON RESTART TRANSMISSION ONCE AGAIN ENGAGED FOR ME TO GO A FEW HUNDRED FEET TO SAFETY. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP WHICH DIAGNOSED THE TRANSMISSION WITH 'INTERNAL FAULTS' WHICH WOULD REQUIRE A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION HAS NEVER HAD ANY WARNINGS THAT THE TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING, NOR HAD IT EVER HESITATED TO ENGAGE PRIOR TO IT'S COMPLETE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE IS 4 1/2 YEARS OLD WITH ONLY 32K MILES. *NM
ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILURE, LOST STEERING AND POWER ON INTERSTATE AT 80 MILES PER HOUR. REPLACED CONTROL, REPLACED ALTERNATOR, FINALLY REPLACED EMT. PART OUT OF WARRANTY I PUT MYSELF AT RISK OF DEATH BECAUSE OF THIS PART FAILURE. PART NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY 80,000 MILES ON CAR. *NM
WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK, A MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE INDICATOR (PERFORMANCE REDUCED." THE ENGINE STARTED "MISSING" BADLY AND WITHIN 30 SECONDS STOPPED, LOSING POWER STEERING, POWER BRAKES, AND THE ABILITY TO ACCELERATE, CREATING A DEFINITE SAFETY HAZARD FOR ME AS WELL AS OTHER CARS ON THE ROAD. I MANAGED TO ROLL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, OUT OF TRAFFIC. AFTER ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES THE CAR STARTED AGAIN. I DROVE HOME AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH THE VOLVO DEALER (VOLVO OF LANGHORNE, LANGHORNE, PA 215-741-1400) FOR THE NEXT DAY. I BROUGHT THE CAR IN AND WITHIN A HALF HOUR, THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A "THROTTLE BODY" (ETM) FAILURE WITH NO OPTION OTHER THAN TO REPLACE IT AS THE CAR WILL NOT RUN PROPERLY IF AT ALL WITHOUT THE REPAIR. THE REPAIR COST $1005.99. THERE IS NO WAY A MAJOR COMPONENT SUCH AS THIS SHOULD FAIL WITH LESS THAN 58,000 MILES (57911 AT THE TIME OF THE REPAIR). A BRIEF SEARCH OF THE INTERNET REVEALED THAT THIS PARTICULAR COMPONENT IS VERY FAILURE PRONE, CERTAINLY WELL OUTSIDE WHAT COULD BE CONSIDERED ACCEPTABLE. THIS IS FOR A VOLVO S60 2.4T BUT IS NOT AVAILABLE AS A CHOICE IN THE FOLLOWING SCREENS. *NM
I EXPERIENCED A PROBLEM WITH THREE OUT OF A SET OF FOUR GOODYEAR AMERICAN EAGLE TIRES PURCHASED AT WALMART IN NORTH CAROLINA ON 09/25/2003. THESE WERE 60,000 MILE RATED (TREAD WEAR RATING 420) RADIAL TIRES SIZE: P205/55R16. THESE WERE FOR MY VOLVO S-60...THE MANUFACTURER'S RECOMMENDED SIZE. I KEPT THE RECOMMENDED PSI @ 38 TIRE PRESSURE. I HAD THEM ROTATED AND REBALANCED SEVERAL TIMES, USUALLY AT ABOUT 5,000/6,000 MILE INTERVALS. DURING MY MOST RECENT SERVICE FOR ROTATION AND REBALANCING ON AUGUST 31, THE WALMART STORE IN ROANOKE, VA BROUGHT THIS DEFECT TO MY ATTENTION. THREE OF THE TIRES HAD DEVELOPED SEVERE AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CRACKS ON THE INSIDE SIDEWALL BETWEEN THE TREAD AND THE RIM CIRCLING THE INSIDE OF THE SIDEWALL AND APPEARED TO BE A "BLOW-OUT" POTENTIAL HAZARD. THE MANUFACTURER'S PRODUCTION CODE WAS: DOT PJT24AHR2403. WALMART ADJUSTED AND REPLACED THIS SET WITH THE SAME TIRE THAT THEY HAD IN STOCK. I REPORTED THE PROBLEM TO GOODYEAR AND WAS GIVEN A CLAIM # 789726. I PHONED THEM TO ASK WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE TO AVOID THIS PROBLEMS OR TO AVOID THIS SAME PROBLEM FOR OCCURRING ON THE CURRENT SET THAT WALMART HAD PUT ON. THEY TOLD ME THAT NOTHING COULD HAVE BEEN DONE OR COULD BE GUARANTEED ON THE NEWER SET. I THINK FURTHER INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE DONE BY NHTSA AS THIS COULD BE A VERY SERIOUS PROBLEM FOR OTHER DRIVERS CAUGHT UNAWARE TO THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE ADVISE. *NM
CAR WAS SURGING WHILE DRIVING. ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE (ETM) WAS CLEANED AT COST OF $88.00. PROBLEM CONTINUED UNTIL CAR LOST POWER AT 65 MPH ON THE FREEWAY. I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE OR DECELERATE. HAD TO SHIFT FROM DRIVE TO NEUTRAL IN ORDER TO SLOW DOWN UNTIL I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY PULL OFF THE ROAD. PROBLEM DID NOT REOCCUR AFTER RESTART OF ENGINE FOR ABOUT ONE WEEK, WHEN IT HAPPENED REPEATEDLY THEREAFTER. FINALLY REPLACE ETM AT COST OF $1,100.00. *NM
THIS IS THE SECOND SERIOUS INCIDENT RECORD. PLEASE REFERENCE ODI NUMBER 10134007; THAT DOCUMENTED THE FIRST INCIDENT.
THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULATOR (ETM) IN MY 01' VOLVO S60, LIKE MANY OTHERS, HAS BECOME FAULTY. WHILE SITTING IDLE OR IN DRIVE, THE RPM'S WILL FLUCTUATE ERRATICALLY CAUSING WHAT SEEMS TO BE BURSTS IN ACCELERATION AND NEAR STALLS. CONSEQUENCES OF THIS DEFECT INCLUDE IMPROMPTU BREAKING TO CORRECT RPM FLUCTUATIONS. THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED A MONTH AGO BY A CERTIFIED VOLVO DEALER WITH A FAILING ETM. MY WIFE AND I ARE SAVING MONEY SO THAT THE REPAIR CAN BE DONE. HOPEFULLY VOLVO RECALLS THE PART SO THAT WE CAN HAVE OURS REPLACED ASAP BEFORE MORE SEVERE COMPLICATIONS OCCUR. *NM
I HAVE A 2001 VOLVO S60 T5 AND I'VE BEEN NOTICING LATELY THE IDLE ON MY RPM SIDE GOING UP AND DOWN RAPIDLY AND THE CAR FEELS LIKE ITS GOING TO TURN OFF. THEN YESTERDAY THE SAME THING HAPPENED AND THE CAR SHUT DOWN AND I TURNED IT BACK ON AND IT BEGIN TRYING TO PUSH ITSELF SO I GOT SCARED AND PARKED IT. LUCKILY IT WAS BY MY HOME AND THEN TODAY I WENT TO RETRIEVE IT AND IT BEGIN DOING THE SAME THING. PEOPLE HAVE BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I SAW SOME MEDIA COVERAGE ABOUT THIS PROBLEM DUE TO THE THROTTLE BODY MODULE. PLEASE HELP AND TRY TO GET THIS PART RECALLED BECAUSE SOMEONE CAN GET SERIOUSLY HURT OR EVEN GOD FORBID PASS AWAY DUE TO THIS PROBLEM. THANK YOU. *NM
I WAS DRIVING ON A BUSY HIGHWAY, AND MAKING A LEFT TURN ACROSS TRAFFIC. WHEN I DEPRESSED THE GAS PEDAL, THE CAR COULD NOT ACCELERATE ABOVE ABOUT FIVE MILES PER HOUR. THE COMPUTER ON THE CAR READ" REDUCED PERFORMANCE" AND I NARROWLY MISSED BEING IN AN ACCIDENT AS LIMPED ACROSS THE HIGHWAY. THE CAR REQUIRED A NEW THROTTLE, AND THE DOWNLOAD OF ACTIVATION SOFTWARE. THE COST FOR THIS REPAIR WAS $736.56. WHEN I HAD THIS PROBLEM, THE MECHANIC TOLD ME OF NUMEROUS PAST PROBLEMS WITH THE THROTTLE ON THIS MODEL AND A PENDING CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT AGAINST VOLVO. I WROTE TO THE VOLVO CORPORATION TO TELL THEM OF THIS PROBLEM, AND THEN LEARNED THAT NHTSA WAS INVESTIGATING THIS VERY PROBLEM. THEY APPARENTLY WON'T DO ANYTHING TO REMEDY THIS UNLESS FORCED TO. I THOUGHT IT IMPORTANT TO GO ON RECORD WITH NUMEROUS OTHER OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS SAME DEFECT. IT SOUNDS LIKE A NUMBER OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE NARROWLY AVOIDED SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. PLEASE TAKE CARE OF THIS SO SOMEONE IS NOT INJURED OR KILLED. THIS PROBLEM CAME OUT OF NOWHERE, AND CERTAINLY PUT ME IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. *NM
DRIVING 01 VOLVO XC ALONG IN RUSH HOUR INTERSTATE TRAFFIC BOSTON. CAR ENGINE CUTS OUT. I SWERVE THREE TIMES NEARLY IN HUGE ACCIDENT! CAR RESTARTED BUT DID IT AGAIN ONE MORE TIME. PROGRESSIVELY DID IT MORE OFTEN UNTIL I REPLACED THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE WHICH VOLVO SAWEDEN IS REPLACING FREE ON RECALL. US VOLVO DENYING PROBLEM. IS THIS A FORD INFLUENCE? *NM
DT: WHILE DRIVING ON HIGHWAY THE OWNER NOTICED A MESSAGE CAME UP WHICH READ PERFORMANCE REDUCED. THE OWNER WAS TRAVELING ABOUT 55-60 MPH WHEN THE CAR LOST POWER AND WOULDN'T GO OVER 30 MPH . HE THEN EXIT OFF THE AND THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF POWER AT A STOP LIGHT. THE IDLE WAS ROUGH, AND AS THE OWNER ATTEMPTED TO GO THROUGH THE LIGHT, THE CAR WOULDN'T GO OVER 10 MPH. THEN THE OWNER PUT THE FLASHERS ON AND EXITED ONTO TO THE SHOULDER. THE OWNER SHUT THE CAR OFF BECAUSE HE COULDN'T CONTINUE ON THE ROAD AT THAT LOW SPEED. THE OWNER SAT THERE FOR ABOUT A MINUTE, AND WAS ABLE TO MAKE IT TO WORK ONLY ABOUT 1/2 MILE AWAY THE MESSAGE WAS STILL SHOWING. THEN AS OWNER WAS DRIVING THE MESSAGE CHANGED TO ENGINE FAILURE. THE OWNER READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT NHTSA INVESTIGATION PE05041. THE OWNER CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND REPORTED THE LOSS OF POWER. MY 2001 S 60 VOLVO SEDAN LOSES POWER DURING ACCELERATION. THE RPMS RACE BUT THE VEHICLE FEELS LIKE IT'S GOING TO STALL. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS VEHICLE BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP 5 TIMES FOR THE SAME COMPLAINT. ON THE FIFTH TIME, THEY REPLACED THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE. THAT WAS ON AUGUST 1, 2005. MY 2001 VOLVO V70XC HAD AN ELECTRONIC THROTTLE FAILURE ON THE HIGHWAY ON 8/01/05 WHICH RESULTED IN AN IMMEDIATE DECELERATION AND TOTAL LOSS OF POWER. MY COMPLAINT IS CONSISTENT WITH THE CURRENT NHTSA INVESTIGATION #PE05041. THE THROTTLE ACCELERATION HAPPENED AGAIN 4 DAYS LATER ON RTE 128 IN BOSTON AND AN ACCIDENT WAS AVERTED AS I GOT GOING BEFORE A CAR RAN INTO ME IN THE BREAK DOWN LANE. MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE MECHANISM FOR $1,300 THIS WEEK BUT DID NOT MAKE ME AWARE OF YOUR INVESTIGATION OR THE CALIFORNIA OR MASSACHUSSETT'S LAWSUITS REGARDING THIS PROBLEM. *JB

MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE MODULE FAILED ON MY 2001 VOLVO V70 AT APPROXIMATELY 48,000 MILES. I WAS LUCKY THAT PERFORMANCE WAS ONLY REDUCED AND I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO THE DEALER FOR THE APPROXIMATELY $1200 REPAIR, BUT I DID CONSIDER IT TO BE A VERY DANGEROUS FAILURE IN THAT THE CAR APPARENTLY CAN CONVERT INTO A "LIMP HOME" MODE WHICH WOULD REDUCE SPEED TO A MAXIMUM OF ABOUT 20 MPH WITHOUT ANY ADVANCE WARNING, WHICH COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS IN EXPRESSWAY DRIVING, OF WHICH I DO A LOT. I OWNED A 1991 VOLVO S60 SEDAN AND I UNDERSTAND YOU ARE INVESTIGATING THIS CAR. FROM TIME TO TIME AS I DROVE IT, IT WOULD UNEXPECTEDLY LOOSE SPEED AND POWER FOR A FEW SECONDS AND THEN RESUME. IT NEVER FULLY STALLED OUT. I HAD MENTIONED THIS AT A SERVICE TIME FOR THE CAR BUT NOTHING WRONG WAS UNCOVERED. RECENTLY MY DAUGHTER WAS DRIVING THE CAR ON INTERSTATE 5 SOUTH OF LA WHEN THE CAR ENGINE CEASED FUNCTIONING WHILE SHE WAS DRIVING IN THE HOV LANE. FORTUNATELY THE DRIVER WAS ABLE TO COAST TO THE SHOULDER THROUGH TRAFFIC WITHOUT GETTING HIT. THE EASILY COULD HAVE BEEN HIT AND SHE COULD HAVE DIED AND WE NEVER WOULD HAVE KNOWN IT WAS A VEHICLE FAILURE. THE CAR WAS TOWED TO A DEALERSHIP WHERE I WAS TOLD THEY EVENTUALLY DIAGNOSED A "FAILED FUEL PUMP". I HAVE NO VALIDATION OF THIS. I DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE THIS CAR AGAIN AND IT WAS LEASE-END SO I TRADED THE CAR IN THAT VERY DAY FOR A NEW CAR. *NM
MY 2001 VOLVO S80 WITH 43,000 MILES WAS LURCHING SO BADLY THAT I HAD TO RIDE THE BRAKE PEDAL TO KEEP THE CAR UNDER CONTROL. ON 6-9-05, I TOOK THE CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALER IN SANTA ANA, CA WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I WAS TOLD THAT THEIR DIAGNOSTIC SOFTWARE SHOWED THAT I HAD A THROTTLE PROBLEM; I WAS CHARGED (AS I'M OUT OF WARRANTY) FOR THE DIAGNOSIS AND CLEANING OF THE THROTTLE. I TOLD THE SERVICE PERSONNEL AT THE DEALERSHIP THAT I UNDERSTOOD THAT CLEANING THE ETM WOULD ONLY BE A TEMPORARY FIX FOR THIS EMISSION PART AND THAT VOLVO NEEDED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEIR ELECTRONIC THROTTLE IS AN INHERENT PROBLEM IN ALL 1999, 2000 AND 2001 SERIES 60, 70, 80 MODELS (WITH GAS ENGINES) AND ETMS NEED TO BE REPLACED. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION, IT'S BEEN SHOWN THAT VOLVO KNEW ABOUT THIS WHOLE ETM ISSUE IN 1998 BEFORE THE FIRST CARS WERE SOLD. A REDESIGN TO ELIMINATE THE FAILURE PRONE POTENTIOMETER THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR WOULD HAVE FIXED THIS ISSUE. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE ETMS IN NEWER MODEL VOLVOS NOW USE A HALL EFFECT SENSOR WHICH IS A NON CONTACTING DEVICE, MEANING VOLVO KNOWS HOW TO MAKE A NON CONTACTING UNIT. PLEASE ADVISE HOW TO GET VOLVO TO RE-CALL THE CARS IN QUESTION AS THEY ARE NOT SAFE. LIKE MANY VOLVO OWNERS, WE BOUGHT THIS CAR FOR IT'S SAFETY. ON VACATION, DRIVING 50 MPH ON FOUR-LANE HWY 17 IN SOUTH CAROLINA WHEN THE CAR SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING LOST POWER AND CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP IN THE HIGHWAY. IT WOULD NOT RESTART. AS TRAFFIC RUSHED BY, MY WIFE AND I HAD TO PUSH THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. AFTER ABOUT 5 MINUTES OF TRYING TO RESTART, THE CAR FINALLY STARTED AND ACTED NORMALLY. WE WERE WITHIN 20 MILES OF OUR DESTINATION, SO WE STARTED OUT AGAIN ONLY TO STALL ABOUT A QUARTER MILE LATER. WE COASTED OFF THE ROAD AND HAD THE CAR TOWED 20 MILES TO THE NEAREST VOLVO DEALER. WE HAD DRIVEN FOR A GOOD PART OF THE DAY THROUGH DIFFICULT CONDITIONS...CONSIDERABLE RAIN AND EVEN A SOME SNOW SHOWERS IN EASTERN OHIO. WHILE DRIVING ON THE OHIO TURNPIKE IN THE VICINITY OF TOLEDO, THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY LOST POWER, THAT IS, THE CAR DECELERATED REGARDLESS OF FOOT-PRESSURE ON THE GAS PEDAL. ALTHOUGH I WAS AT THE TIME IN THE MIDDLE LANE OF A RATHER BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAY, I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY, WHERE THE CAR STOPPED RUNNING ALTOGETHER. I LET THE CAR SIT FOR A MINUTE, AND THEN ATTEMPTED TO START THE ENGINE AGAIN. ALTHOUGH THE ENGINE TURNED OVER IT WOULD NOT RUN. THROUGH INFORMATION PROVIDED BY GEICO INSURANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE FACILITY WERE ABLE TO SUMMON A TOW TRUCK, WHICH DELIVERED THE CAR, AND MY FAMILY TO A VOLVO DEALERSHIP SCHMIDT IN PERRYSBURG, OHIO AT ABOUT 5:00 P.M. ON THAT SATURDAY EVENING. THIS INCIDENT, APART FROM CONSIDERABLE INCONVENIENCE AND COST, PUT MY FAMILY AND ME IN A VERY HAZARDOUS SITUATION. PARTLY BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF A GUARDRAIL, THE VEHICLE CAME TO REST ONLY INCHES AWAY FROM THE LINE SEPARATING THE HIGHWAY SHOULDER FROM THE RIGHT LANE. BECAUSE OF THE HEAVY TRAFFIC MUCH OF IT CONSISTING OF MASSIVE TRAILER-TRUCKS TRAVELING WEST I THINK IT REASONABLE TO SAY THAT THE EXPOSURE TO RISK WAS HIGH. HAD THE WEATHER VERY CHILLY TEMPERATURES, A PIECING NORTH WIND, AND THE EVER-PRESENT THREAT OF RAIN BEEN ANY BETTER I WOULD HAVE GUIDED MY FAMILY TO THE SHELTER OF AN OVERPASS ABOUT ONE QUARTER-MILE TO THE WEST UNTIL THE TOW-TRUCK ARRIVED. FORTUNATELY, OFFICER MACK OF THE OHIO HIGHWAY PATROL ARRIVED AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES, AND ALERTED PASSING TRAFFIC TO THE ROADSIDE HAZARD WITH THE FLASHING LIGHTS OF HIS PATROL CAR. *NM
THROTTLE CONTROL MODULE OF MY 2001 VOLVO S60 FAILED. THE VEHICLE WOULD GO FROM A NORMAL DRIVING CONDITION (ROAD LOAD, APPROX. 45 MPH) TO A REDUCED SPEED OF A MAX. 20 - 25 MPH. AFTER TRAIL AND ERROR, I LEARNED THAT AFTER 5 TO 6 ENGINE RESTARTS, I COULD GET THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE NORMAL, WITHOUT THE REDUCED POWER. BUT OVER TIME THE VEHICLE WOULD GO BACK INTO THE SAME REDUCED POWER MODE. *JB
THE MIRRORS AND DRIVER SEAT POSITION MEMORY DO NOT RESPOND CORRECTLY TO THE KEY REMOTE COMMAND TO UNLOCK THE CAR. THE SEAT WILL GO TO THE MEMORIZED POSITION, BUT THE MIRRORS DO NOT. THE RESULT IS THE DRIVER IS SURPRISED THE FIRST TIME HE LOOKS IN THE MIRRORS IN A TRAFFIC SITUATION. HE CANNOT SEE WHAT IS IN ADJACENT LANES IN ORDER TO MAKE A SAFE LANE CHANGE. THIS COULD CAUSE A CRASH. THE MANUFACTURER HAS REPLACED THE DRIVER SEAT AND MIRROR REMOTE RECEIVER MODULES AND RE-PROGRAMMED THEM. THIS DID NOT SOLVE THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER REPRESENTATIVE HAS RECOGNIZED THE PROBLEM, AND IT APPEARS MANY IF NOT ALL THE CARS DO THIS. *JB
MY 2001 S60 2.4T VOLVO SEDAN HAS HAD NUMEROUS ERROR MESSAGES DISPLAYED OVER THE 4 YEARS I HAVE OWNED IT. MOST TIMES THERE WAS NO PROBLEM IN DRIVING THE VEHICLE UNTIL I COULD SAFELY PULL OVER. THE "FIX" FOR THE ERROR MESSAGE WAS TO SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, SIT FOR A MOMENT AND RESTART. ON TWO OTHER FRIGHTFUL OCCASIONS, HOWEVER, I LOST STEERING ASSIST AND ACCELERATION. BOTH TIMES I WAS ON BUSY INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AND FEARED FOR MY LIFE AS MY CAR LIMPED TOWARD THE BREAKDOWN LANE. IT APPEARS THAT I HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY FORTUNATE IN THAT BOTH TIMES THE CAR LOST POWER AND CONTROL THAT IT STARTED UP AGAIN. I WILL BE SUBMITTING 2 ACCOUNTS ONLINE. MY REPAIR GARAGE CONFIRMED YESTERDAY THAT THERE ARE A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF ERROR MESSAGES CAUSED BY THE "THROTTLE CONTROL" AND THAT I HAVE TO TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE ORIGINAL DEALER. I HAVE MY APPOINTMENT FOR SEPTEMBER 6 AND WAS GIVEN AN ESTIMATE OF $900 TO REPLACE THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL. IT IS NOT UNDER WARRANTY.

I WAS TOLD THAT MY ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND BECAUSE I WAS PAST 50K IT WAS NOT COVERED BY THE WARRANTY. I HAD PURCHASED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO 74K HOWEVER THEY STATED THAT THIS PART WAS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY EITHER. I PAID OVER $1000.00 TO HAVE THE PART REPLACED.
