CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND CAR LOST POWER WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT WOULD NOT ACCELERATE AND DISPLAYED THE MESSAGE "REDUCED ENGINE PERFORMANCE". DEALER INDICATED IT WAS A CRACKED INTERCOOLER HOSE AND THAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. IT WAS REPLACE AND AFTER ABOUT TWO MONTHS THE SAME SYMPTOMS HAPPENED. IT WAS THEN DIAGNOSED AS A BAD ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY. THAT WAS REPLACED AND THE SAME SYMPTOMS HAPPENED WITHIN TWO MONTHS AGAIN. THE CAR NOW DOES NOT ACCELERATE MORE THAN 10 MPH. THE NEXT DIAGNOSIS WAS TO REPLACE THE COMPLETE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS. THE CAR IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE IT STALL OR DECELERATE FROM HIGHWAY SPEEDS WITH NO NOTICE. IT IS VERY SIMILAR TO A RECALL FOR MODEL YEARS UP TO 2002. *TR
PURCHASED THIS CAR IN 2010 WITH 51,000 MILES. SHORTLY AFTER PURCHASE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WITH SERVICE ENGINE SOON MESSAGE. CAR WORKED FINE. THEN BRAKE FAILURE MESSAGE CAME ON, BRAKES WORKED FINE. TOOK VEHICLE TO VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEY FOUND A WAY TO "RESET" SYSTEM. GO IN TRUNK, REMOVE BLACK BATTERY CABLE, TOUCH IT TO RED BATTERY CABLE FOR APPROX 10 SECONDS AND THE SYSTEM WILL. WE'VE RESET THE SYSTEM COUNTLESS TIMES AND IT CONTINUES TO BE A PROBLEM. ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO ALL GAUGES WOULD QUIT WORKING AND CAR WOULD RANDOMLY BRAKE AT ABOUT 45 MPH. PLUS AFTER COMING TO STOP, CAR WOULD BARELY MOVE BUT AFTER IT GOT GOING IT WOULD BE FINE. RESET SYSTEM AND IT WORKED FOR ABOUT 3 MILES AND HAPPEN AGAIN. VOLVO MECHANIC FOUND AWD (DEM) CONTROL MODULE FAILURE. REPLACED THIS AT $1500 FOR THE PART AND AFTER 50 MILES, GAUGES STILL WORK, NO RANDOM BRAKING AND ACCELERATION IS NORMAL. BUT....SERVICE ENGINE MESSAGE AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT BACK ON. WAS TOLD THAT ALL MODULES RELATE TO EACH AND IF ONE IS OUT IT CAN AFFECT THE OTHERS. AT ABOUT $1500 PER MODULE, IT IS COST PROHIBITIVE TO REPLACE ALL THESE, 6 TO BE EXACT. VOLVO NEEDS TO RECALL THESE VEHICLES AND REPLACE THESE MODULES. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE ACTIVATED THE HEATED SEATS AND AFTER A MATTER OF MINUTES, SMOKE BELLOWED FROM THE SIDE OF THE DRIVER'S SEAT. THE SEAT WARMER WAS DEACTIVATED AND THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT A ONE INCH HOLE HAD BEEN BURNED INTO THE SEAT. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN DIAGNOSED BY A MECHANIC. THE MANUFACTURER HAD NOT BEEN NOTIFIED. JUST LEAVING MY GARAGE, WE SMELLED SOMETHING AND IMMEDIATELY SAW SMOKE COMING FROM THE LEFT SIDE OF THE DRIVER SEAT. THE SEAT WARMER WAS ON. WE TURNED THE WARMER OFF AND OPENED THE DOORS. THE ODOR AND SMOKE DISSIPATED BUT THERE IS A 1-1/2" HOLE BURNED IN THE LEATHER. *TR

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V483000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE: DELIVERY: FUEL PUMP). THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 86,100.

THERE WAS A RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 07V226000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE VIN WAS INELIGIBLE UNDER THE RECALL AND THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 106,000.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND CONFIRMED THAT THE VIN FAILED TO QUALIFY FOR REPAIRS UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER:04V029000 (STEERING:LINKAGES). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 135,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS EXPERIENCING SEVERAL ELECTRICAL FAILURES. THE REAR DOOR INDICATOR WAS ILLUMINATED, THE VEHICLE WAS EXHIBITING HESITATION, THE STEERING WAS HARD TO TURN AND THE INTERIOR LIGHT REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE BRAKE, SPARK PLUGS AND AIR FILTER WAS REPLACED HOWEVER, THE FAILURE WAS NOT CORRECTED. THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE ELECTRICAL FAILURES. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 118,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 120,000.
THE PCV "FLAME TRAP" HAS CLOGGED IN MY 2004 VOLVO S60 WITH ONLY 41,000 MILES AND AS IT TURNS OUT, THIS IS A $1200 JOB. I WOULDN'T BE SO DISMAYED HAD I NOT DISCOVERED THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY PREVALENT PROBLEM AND THAT IT IS GUARANTEED TO HAPPEN TO YOUR CAR PRIOR TO 100,000 MILES. THAT THERE IS NEARLY NO AMOUNT OF MAINTENANCE ONE CAN DO TO PREVENT THIS PROBLEM. THE WORST PART ABOUT THIS PROBLEM IS THAT IF IT'S NOT REPAIRED PROMPTLY, IT WILL LEAD TO OIL BURNING AND THE DAMAGING OF VARIOUS SEALS IN THE ENGINE WHICH WILL LEAD TO CATASTROPHIC ENGINE FAILURE. VOLVO HAS EXTENDED ITS WARRANTY COVERAGE FOR THIS PROBLEM ON ITS S40 MODEL CARS WHICH SHARE THE ENGINES IN THE S60, YET HAS NOT ACKNOWLEDGED THIS TO BE A MAJOR PROBLEM IN ITS S60 MODELS. *TR

THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 94,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 95,412.
LIKE MANY OTHERS WHO ARE ON VOLVO WEBSITES HAVE REPORTED I TOO HAD A FIRE ON THE DRIVERS SEAT LEFT SIDE DUE TO MY SEAT HEATER. I NOW HAVE A HALF DOLLAR SIZED HOLE IN THE SIDE OF MY SEAT. THE FIRST SIGN OF THIS WAS A SMELL AND THEN A LOT OF SMOKE. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER QUICKLY AND HAD A TOWEL HANDY TO SNUFF IT OUT, OTHERWISE I WOULD HAVE BURNED HANDS OR OTHER PARTS. I'VE BEEN A LIFELONG VOLVO OWNER, I HAVE TO SAY I'M SURPRISED VOLVO HASN'T AT LEAST WARNED THEIR DEALERS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. I DID SEE ANOTHER DRIVERS SEAT TOTALLY BLACKENED AND BURNT OUT LAST TIME I TOOK MY CAR IN, WAS AMAZED THAT IT COULD EVEN HAPPEN LET ALONE BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE. NOW AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE THIS IS A PREVALENT PROBLEM. *TR
WHEN TURNING A CORNER, THE ENGINE STOPPED, STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD COME ON. THIS HAPPENED A SECOND TIME TWO DAYS LATER. TOOK TO INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND HE CHECKED ALL WORK HE HAD DONE IN THE PAST PLUS CHECKED THE WHOLE CAR OUT AND HE COULD NOT FIND WHY THE CAR STOPPED. TWO DAYS LATER THE CAR AGAIN STALLED OUT WHEN IN TRAFFIC - ENGINE STOPPED, STEERING STOPPED WORKING AND LIGHTS ON DASHBOARD CAME ON. LAST TWO TIMES THIS HAPPENED I WAS DRIVING ON A STRAIGHT ROAD. THIS HAS HAPPENED 5 TIMES NOW IN THE LAST WEEK. ALL TIMES ENGINE STOPPED WORKING, I WAS DRIVING BETWEEN 10 AND 40 MILES PER HOUR. AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM, I FOUND OUT THAT MY VEHICLE HAD BEEN RECALLED AND AT 53,333 MILES THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER. NOW 42,000 MILES LATER IT APPEARS THAT IT IS ONCE AGAIN THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY SINCE I DO A LOT OF HIGHWAY DRIVING AND ALSO LIVE IN AN AREA WHERE CHILDREN HAVE BEEN KNOW TO RUN OUT INTO THE STREET. NOT ONLY IS THERE A POSSIBILITY OF A CAR ACCIDENT, BUT ALSO THE POSSIBILITY OF A CHILD BEING HIT IF I CANNOT TURN THE CAR QUICKLY TO AVOID THE CHILD. AT THIS POINT I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE THE CAR AND FELL VERY UNSAFE EVEN THOUGH VOLVOS ARE KNOW FOR THEIR SAFETY. AFTER READING NUMEROUS REPORTS OF MANY PEOPLE HAVING THIS PROBLEM WITH THEIR 2004 S60 VOLVOS IT MAKES ME WONDER WHY VOLVO IS NOT CORRECTING THIS PROBLEM ON ALL 2004 VOLVO S60S THAT ARE HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. MY MECHANIC IS CHECKING ON THIS PROBLEM AND WILL REPLACE NEXT WEEK IF THIS IS THE REAL ISSUE. SOMETIMES DOORS LOCK FOR NO REASON AT ALL. APPROXIMATE A MONTH LATER AFTER I BROUGHT 2004 VOLVO S60 AT DEC 2011, WHEN I WAS DRIVING IN FREEWAY TO POST OFFICE, WHAT A SUDDEN, THE ENGINE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING, I PRESS THE ACCELERATE PEDAL, BUT IT WAS NOT RESPONSE, BUT THE CAR STILL HV A LITTLE MOMENTUM, THEN IT TURN IT TO THE CORNER AND THE CAR WAS STOPPED. I TURN OFF THE KEY AND RESTART THE CAR AGAIN, IT WORKED.AFTER A YEAR, THE PROBLEM COME BACK AGAIN AND THE FREQUENCY BECOME MORE, UP TIL DEC, 2012, 3 MORE TIMES SAME PROBLEM INCURRED. GOOD AFTERNOON, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE OF THE EMERGENCY BRAKE, WHEREBY THE BRAKE LINING OF THE E-BRAKE IS OF AN "ORGANIC" COMPOUND AND ACCORDING TO THE VOLVO TECHNICIAN "SWELLS" WHEN IT GETS WET, CAUSING THE E-BRAKE TO LOCK-UP. MY BRIDE WAS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD WHEN THIS OCCURRED, CAUSING THE ENTIRE BRAKING ASSEMBLY AND ASSOCIATED PARTS TO BE RIPPED AND BUSTED LOOSE. VOLVO CHARGED US $2100 IN PARTS AND LABOR TO "FIX" THIS. VOLVO TECHS DID SAY THAT THIS HAPPENS ALOT, BUT ALOT AT SPEED (FASTER THAN 25MPH). CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS E-BRAKE LOCK-UP AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. HOW FREQUENTLY HAS THIS HAPPENED? I HAVE PICTURES OF THE AFFECTED PARTS. THIS IS TOTALLY UNSAFE AND VOLVO KNOWS ABOUT IT. *TR
I OWN A 2004 VOLVO S60. I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE AFTER MY MECHANIC TOLD ME MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS DUE TO THIS RECALL. VOLVO SAYS THERE IS NO SUCH RECALL AT FIRST, BUT UPON CALLING THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER I FOUND OUT THAT THERE IS. HOWEVER, THEY SAY IT IS VIN SPECIFIC AND THAT MINE IS NOT COVERED. MY MECHANIC SAYS THAT THIS NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF, FOR THIS PROBLEM CAN CAUSE MY ENGINE TO STALL OUT AT ANYTIME AND CAUSE MY STEERING WHEEL TO JERK AROUND ON THE HIGHWAY. TO ME, THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM, SOUNDS LIKE THAT IT COULD POTENTIALLY KILL ME ON THE ROAD. HOW CAN SOMETHING THAT CAN BE THIS POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS NOT BE VOLVOS RESPONSIBILITY TO FIX? THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR WOULD HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V226000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) THAT COULD POSSIBLY HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE YET THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 81,500.

MY S60 HAS A GEARTRONIC TRANSMISSION (GEARTRONIC IS ESSENTIALLY THE BRAND NAME OF THE VOLVO MANUMATIC TRANSMISSION. WHEN TURNING A CORNER. I NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS ON. THE THIS HAPPENED A SECOND TIME A WEEK LATER, AND THEN SEVERAL ADDITIONAL TIMES. I TOOK THE CAR TO INDEPENDENT MECHANIC AND HE CHECKED IT OUT BUT COULDN'T DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. HE ONLY SPECULATED THAT IT COULD BE THE PVC BOX, BUT THAT THEY WERE NOT SURE IT WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 100K AFTER THIS HAPPENED ABOUT EIGHT TIMES IN THE NEXT 3 MONTHS, I TOOK THE CAR TO VOLVO DEALER. THEY CHECKED IT OUT, AND TOLD ME IT MAY BE THE PVC BOX, BUT THEY WERE NOT SURE THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I TOOK IT TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND WHO SAID IT WAS THE CATALYTYIC CONVERTER. THIS PROBLEM HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR A YEAR. I TOOK THE CAR TO ANOTHER MECHANIC AND HE CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS AND CABIN FILTER. HE TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE VOLVO DEALERSHIP/SERVICE TO HAVE THE COMPUTER RESET. HE SAID, BECAUSE THE CAR LOOSES PRESSURE AND STALLS WHEN YOU MAKE A QUICK TURN. I CALLED VOLVO THEY SAID THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM. I TOOK THE CAR TO VOLVO TO GET AN OIL CHANGE. THEY TOLD ME THE CAR STALLED OUT ON THE MECHANIC 3 TIMES AND THE CHECK ENGIINE LIGHT WAS ON. THEY CHECKED THE CAR ON THE COMPUTER AND TOLD ME THE ENGINE COILS NEEDED REPLACING. THAT WAS THE PROBLEM. I PAID FOR THE ENGINE COILS TO BE REPLACED AND SOME OTHER WORK WHICH TOTALED $1350.00. I PICKED THE CAR UP ON FRIDAY, ON MONDAY, WHILE TURNING A CORNER THE CAR STALLED OUT, NO POWER, NO STEERING, JUST ONBOARD LIGHTS. IT HAPPENED AGAIN ON TUESDAY MORNING. I EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM WHEN THE CAR WAS UNDER RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP FIXED IT, BUT IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THIS PROBLEM IS OCCURING AGAIN. ON TURNING THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTING(SOMETIMES THAT DOESN'T WORK, BUT IF I REMOVE THE BATTERY CABLE AND LET IT SET FOR A BIT AND PUT IT BACK ON THE CAR WILL START), THE FUNCTIONS OF THE CAR RETURN WITH EXCEPTION THAT THE SRS SERVICE AIR BAG URGENT INDICATION REMAINS. THIS PROBLEM CAN TAKE MONTHS TO REPEAT OR ONLY A MATTER OF MINUTES. IT SEEMS TO BE MORE PREVALENT IN HOT WEATHER. AS I WAS LEAVING, ANOTHER SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD A PERSON OVER THE TELEPHONE THEY NEEDED A FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR AND WOULD GET 50% OFF. A FEW DAYS LATER A FRIEND TOOK HER S40 TO THIS DEALER AND WAS TOLD SHE NEEDED A FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR TO FIX HER ACTUAL FUEL SYSTEM PROBLEM (IT DID NOT). THE ODDS OF A PERSON LEARNING ABOUT 3 VOLVOS NEEDING FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR REPLACEMENTS IN THIS MANNER SEEMS PHENOMENAL. NHTSA SHOULD REQUIRE VOLVO TO SUPPLY STATISTICS AND RECORDS (PROBABLY A SIMPLE VOLVO DATABASE SEARCH) FOR ALL VEHICLES RECEIVING NEW FUEL PRESSURE SENSORS AND IDENTIFY WHETHER: 1) THE REPAIR WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL NUMBER R181; 2) THE NON-RECALL FPS CUSTOMER WAS CHARGED FOR THE REPAIR; 3) THE NON-RECALL FPS CUSTOMER WAS NOT CHARGED FOR THE REPAIR. AND, FOR THOSE VEHICLES, THE NHTSA SHOULD REQUIRE VOLVO TO PROVIDE THE PLANT, PRODUCTION DATE, AND CHASSIS NUMBER. RUNNING THE REPORT IN MODEL NUMBER AND CHASSIS NUMBER ORDER (CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER) OF ALL CARS WITH FPS PROBLEM WOULD LIKELY AID THE NHTSA IN DETERMINING WHETHER THE EXTENT OF THE FPS PROBLEM AND ACCURACY OF THE VOLVO'S RECALL CAMPAIGN NUMBER R181. *TR
WHEN I DRIVE MY MANUAL TRANSMISSION S60R VOLVO, AND I SHIFT I HEAR A LOUD THUD IN THE BACK OF THE CAR, I CHECKED EVERYTHING THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE MAKING THE NOISE AND SECURED IT, IT BOTHERED ME SO MUCH I TOOK IT TO THE VOLVO DEALER AND THEY TOLD ME THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY BECAUSE OF THE SUSPENSION SOFTWARE AND THAT THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS, HOWEVER IT WAS NOT APPLICABLE FOR MY VIN. HE SAID THIS WAS THE BEST GUESS HE COULD MAKE, I INFORMED HIM THAT IT ONLY MAKES THE NOISE IF YOU MAKE A PRETTY GENTLE SHIFT, BUT IT CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 VOLVO S-60 AND THE INTERIOR DOOR PANEL ON PASSENGER SIDE FAILED WHICH LEADS TO THE PASSENGER NOT BEING ABLE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S60. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE SPORADICALLY FOLLOWED BY THE VEHICLE STALLING. THE FAILURE WOULD OCCUR MOST OFTEN WHEN DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT THE FUEL SENSOR WAS DEFECTIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED BUT WOULD PROVIDE NO ASSISTANCE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 52,000. UPDATED 12/03/10. *LJ
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2004 VOLVO S60R. THE CONTACT WAS DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 10 MPH, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY STALLED AND THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE ENGINE RESTARTED AND THE VEHICLE BEGAN FUNCTIONING NORMALLY. THE FAILURE CONTINUED TO OCCUR SPORADICALLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE FUEL PUMP NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND ALSO ADVISED THE CONTACT OF NHTSA RECALL CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 09V483000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP). THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE REPAIRED; HOWEVER, THE VOLVO MODEL YEAR 2004 S60R WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE 2004 VOLVO S60 WAS INCLUDED IN THE RECALL DEFECT.
