TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE REAR WINDOWS WOULD OPEN INDEPENDENTLY WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE CONTACT'S ATTEMPTS TO CLOSE THEM. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE WINDOW REGULATOR FAILED. THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR WINDOW REGULATOR WAS REPLACED, BUT NOT THE PASSENGER SIDE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. UPDATED 02/15/12*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED BOTH REAR REGULATORS FAILED WITHOUT WARNING DURING THE PAST YEAR. WHEN THE CONSUMER'S WIFE ATTEMPTED TO ROLL DOWN THE WINDOWS USING THE CONTROLS LOCATED ON THE PANEL, THE WINDOWS DID NOT MOVE, THEY SUBSEQUENTLY SAGGED IN THE WINDOW FRAMES AND CREATED AN OPENING. THE WINDOWS COULD BE PUSHED UN IN THE FRAME BY HAND, BUT WOULD THEN FALL BACK DOWN WHEN DRIVING. UPDATED 02/22/12
FOR A FEW MONTHS PRIOR TO JUNE, VEHICLE ELECTRONICS WERE FLICKERING AND KEY FOBS WERE NOT WORKING ALL THE TIME. THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE BATTERY IN KEY FOB (REPLACED) BUT THAT DIDN'T WORK SO I REPLACED CAR BATTERY. STILL HAVING ISSUES TOOK CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY COULDN'T FIND ANY ISSUES. A FEW WEEKS WENT BY AND ON MY WAY TO WORK, CAR JUST SHUT OFF ON THE HIGHWAY, I HAD TO GET OVER TWO LANES OF TRAFFIC WITH DEAD CAR. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO DEALERSHIP. THEY FOUND BURNT POWER CABLE AND FUSE BOX. $1800 LATER CAR WAS REPAIRED AND THERE HAS BEEN NO ELECTRICAL ISSUES SINCE. I HEARD FROM ANOTHER DEALERSHIP THAT THE REPAIR IS SOMETHING THAT STARTED HAPPENING LATELY. YESTERDAY 19 FEB 2013 THE RECALL NOTICE CAME OUT ON NEWS, I HOPE I AM REIMBURSED FOR REPAIRS. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD STALL SPORADICALLY. THE COOLANT WARNING LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE AFTER THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER BUT WAS INFORMED THAT THERE WERE NO FAILURES FOUND WITHIN THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
WHILE ACCELERATING ON A HIGHWAY, THE CAR LOST POWER AND STARTED TO SHAKE. I HAD TO PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER WHILE DECELERATING WHILE CARS AROUND ME WERE HONKING AND DRIVING AROUND TO PASS ME. I WAS LUCKY NOT TO HAVE BEEN IN A COLLISION. THE "ENGINE MALFUNCTION" LIGHT AND "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT TURNED ON. AFTER COMING TO A STOP ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, I TURNED OFF THE CAR FOR A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED IT - IT DROVE FINE BUT THE "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT STAYED ON. IT HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES SINCE. *TR
PASSENGER AND REAR DOORS WILL NOT UNLOCK EVEN FROM THE INSIDE. KEY FOB, INTERIOR UNLOCK BUTTON AND MANUAL DOOR HANDLES WILL NOT UNLOCK THE DOORS MAKING PASSENGERS HAVE TO EXIT THROUGH THE DRIVERS DOOR OR WINDOWS. *TR
CAR DIED OUT OF NO WHERE WHO NOT START WOULD NOT JUMP START HAD TO HAVE IT TOWED FOR BIG MONEY ON A FLAT BED WITH SKATES. I WAS HOURS AWAY FROM HOME. STEERING COLUMN AND A NEW BATTERY OVER $1600. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55 MPH THE VEHICLE WOULD SUDDENLY STALL WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. A FEW DAYS LATER THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER AND THEY ADVISED HIM THAT THERE WAS A LOOSE CONNECTION IN THE FUEL TANK. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED AGAIN BY CONNECTING THE TANK IN PLACE. THE VEHICLE SUDDENLY STALLED A THIRD TIME AND IT WAS TOWED TO THE SAME DEALER WHO ADVISED HIM THAT THE FUEL GAUGE WASN'T WORKING AND HE DIDN'T HAVE ANY GASOLINE IN THE TANK. THE FUEL GAUGE WAS REPAIRED. THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN AND THE CONTACT WAS WAITING TO FOR THE DIAGNOSIS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 50,000.
RED STEERING WHEEL WITH PADLOCK IN THE DASH. DOESN'T GO AWAY AT ALL. COST SEVERAL THOUSAND TO FIX. CAR WON'T START SOMETIMES OTHERS IT WILL BUT STEERING WHEEL DOESN'T LOCK. SEARCHED ONLINE AND TONS OF OTHER 2006-2007 BMW OWNERS HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM, ONCE THEY FOUND OUT THE PROBLEM THEY STARTED KEEPING ALL THE PARTS ION STOCK. I EVEN SPOKE TO A DEALERSHIP THAT SAYS THEY HAVE 2 CARS A WEEK FOR THIS; ABSOLUTELY INSANE FOR ONE DEALERSHIP. ITS A WELL KNOWN DEFAULT BUT NOT RECALL HAS BEEN ISSUED. IF THE STEERING WHEEL WAS TO LOCK WHILE SOMEONE WAS DRIVING IT COULD BE FATAL. *TR
DRIVERS SIDE DOOR WILL NOT UNLOCK FROM INSIDE. PULLING ON HANDLE WILL NOT UNLOCK THE DOOR NOR WILL THE UNLOCK BUTTON FOR ALL LOCKS ON CAR. IN ADDITION THE REMOTE KEY FOB WILL NOT LOCK OR UNLOCK THE DOOR. RANDOM OCCURRENCE. WORKED PERFECTLY FINE IN THE MORNING AND THEN MALFUNCTIONED LATER ON IN THE DAY. SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD. WHAT IF THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. I CAN NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR. *TR
THE BMW 3 SERIES (MINE INCLUDED) IDENTIFIED BY CHASSIS DESIGNATIONS E90, E91, E92, AND E93 (ALL US MODELS) HAVE A KNOWN DEFECT REGARDING AUTOMATIC EXTERIOR MIRROR MOVEMENT WHEN UNLOCKING THE VEHICLE DOORS USING THE KEY FOB. THE MIRROR MOVEMENT OCCURS REGARDLESS OF WHICH KEY FOB IS PRESENTED TO UNLOCK DOORS. A SINGLE KEYFOB UNLOCK PROCESS CAN TRIGGER INNUMERABLE EXTERIOR MIRROR POSITIONS. THE UNSUSPECTING DRIVER WHO DOES NOT CHECK BOTH HIS/HER DRIVER AND PASSENGER SIDE MIRRORS PRIOR TO DRIVING THE VEHICLE WILL BE REQUIRED TO SET THE PROPER MIRROR POSITIONS WHILE DRIVING OR LEAVE THEM MALADJUSTED UNTIL THE NEXT STOP, IMPAIRING THEIR ABILITY TO SEE VEHICLES ADJACENT OR ONCOMING VEHICLES FROM THE REAR, INCLUDING EMERGENCY VEHICLES. BMW HAS ISSUED A SERVICE BULLETIN REGARDING THIS DEFECT. HOWEVER, ONLY CARS WITH EXISTING MANUFACTURER WARRANTIES ARE REPAIRED IF THIS ISSUE OCCURS. REF BMW SI B51 36 08 THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN LINKED TO CORROSION OF MIRROR MOTOR ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS. IT IS ALSO PLAUSIBLE THAT ALL ELECTRICAL ADJUSTMENT OF THE EXTERIOR MIRRORS WOULD BE RENDERED AN IMPOSSIBILITY IF THE PROBLEM ESCALATES. *TR
ELECTRIC DOOR LOCKS FAILED ON ALL FOUR DOORS. COULD NOT UNLOCK ANY PASSENGER DOOR UNTIL FUSE INSIDE GLOVE BOX WAS REPLACED. DRIVER COULD EXIT THE DRIVERS DOOR BY MANUALLY LIFTING DOOR HANDLE. NO APPARENT MEANS TO OPEN ANY PASSENGER DOORS (OR GAS DOOR COVER) UNTIL THE FUSE WAS REPLACED. HAD THERE HAVE BEEN A FRONT SEAT PASSENGER, THAT OCCUPANT WOULD HAVE TO CLIMB OVER CONSOLE AND EXIT THE DRIVERS DOOR TO EVEN ALLOW ACCESS TO THE FUSE PANEL. THIS IS THE SECOND OCCURRENCE IN THIS VEHICLE AND BASED ON MY ONLINE RESEARCH, IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE. IF THIS PROBLEM WERE TO OCCUR AND THEN AN ACCIDENT HAPPENED, IT WOULD BE A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE NONE OF THE PASSENGERS COULD EXIT RAPIDLY. *TR
BMW STEERING WHEEL LOCK CANT START VEHICLE LEAVES YOU STRANDED. HAD DEALER REPLACED ALREADY ONCE IN PAST PROBLEM PERSISTS. *TR
2007 BMW 328XI. THE DOORS WILL NOT OPEN UTILIZING REMOTE NOR OPEN/CLOSE LOCK BUTTON IN THE CAR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE BECAUSE ONLY THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR CAN OPEN EVEN FROM THE INSIDE. *TR
BMW 335I INTERIOR DOORS WERE LOCKED DUE TO ELECTRICAL/MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION/FAILURE OF THE DOOR LOCK SYSTEM. I HAD TO UNROLL THE WINDOWS AND CRAWL OUT AND PULL MY KIDS OUT OF THE BACK SEATS THROUGH THE WINDOWS. IF THIS WERE AN ACCIDENT, THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN SEVERE INJURIES AND MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO QUICKLY GET OUT OF THE CAR. ONLINE FORUMS INDICATE THIS IS A SERIAL PROBLEM AND SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO MANUFACTURER RECALL FOR THIS ISSUE. *TR
HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP FAILING RESULTING IN MY VEHICLE TO SHUT OFF AND NOT START. I'M VERY AFRAID THIS COULD HAPPEN WHILE PASSING A VEHICLE ON THE HIGHWAY OR WHILE ON A VACATION TRIP WITH FAMILY. *TR
STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP UNEXPECTED AND CAR WILL NOT START. HAVE BEEN REPLACED ONCE BEFORE. THIS IS THE SECOND INCIDENT SINCE 12/28/09. CAR HAS TO BE TOWED FROM LOCATIONS. *TR
I WAS DRIVING ON LOCAL. ALL OF SUDDEN, THERE WAS NO RESPONSE WHEN STEPPING ON THE GAS. I HAD TO PULL OVER THE SHOULDER AND STOP THE VEHICLE. I TRIED TO RESTART THE CAR. IT DIDN'T SUCCEED. I HAD TO ASK FOR TOWING TO THE MECHANIC. AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE A FUEL PUMP FUSE PROBLEM. MY CAR WAS JUST OUT OF WARRANTY SINCE I BOUGHT IT IN DEC 2006. SO I HAD TO PAY IT MYSELF FOR THE REPAIR ($600) *JS
RED STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING LIGHT CAME ON ONE DAY. I NEVER HAD AN ISSUE WITH MY CAR STARTING EVEN WITH THE WARNING LIGHT ON. I HAD MY CAR CHECKED OUT AND IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO REPLACE THE WHOLE STEERING WHEEL COLUMN. NOT BECAUSE IT WAS BAD, BUT BECAUSE THE SENSOR WAS BAD AND THE ONLY WAY TO FIX IT WAS REPLACING THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN. TOTAL COST WAS OVER $700. MY CAR WAS 3 MONTHS AND 5,000 MILES OUT OF WARRANTY. AFTER RESEARCHING ON THE INTERNET I FOUND THAT THE STEERING COLUMN WARNING LIGHT SENSOR IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM. HOPEFULLY ENOUGH PEOPLE COMPLAIN AND BMW RECALLS THIS PART THAT IS OBVIOUSLY DEFECTIVE. *TR
THE RECALL ANNOUNCED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES TODAY (HTTP://WHEELS.BLOGS.NYTIMES.COM/2012/03/26/BMW-RECALLS-NEARLY-1-3-MILLION-VEHICLES-WORLDWIDE-FOR-BATTERY-CABLE-FLAW/?NL=AUTOMOBILES&EMC=EDIT_WS_20120327) ANNOUNCING A RECALL OF 6-SERIES AND 5-SERIES BMWS ALSO POTENTIALLY AFFECTED 2007 3-SERIES BMWS AS WELL. AT ABOUT 31000 MILES, I BEGAN EXPERIENCING FLICKERING HEADLIGHTS. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED AS A LOOSE BATTERY CONNECTION. THE BATTERY HAD NEVER BEEN CHANGED/REMOVED, SO IT SHOULD NOT HAVE HAD A CONNECTION ISSUE. JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW SO IF 3-SERIES COMPLAINTS ARE COMMON YOU OPEN UP THE INVESTIGATION TO EXPLORE THE ISSUE IN 3-SERIES DESIGNS.... I WAS LUCKY, CAUGHT IT BEFORE DAMAGE/FIRE OCCURRED. *TR
2007 BMW 335XI FLOOR MATS ARE NOT ANCHORED OR ATTACHED TO FLOOR IN ANY WAY. FLOOR MATS CONSTANTLY SLIDE BACK AND FORTH, AS THEY ARE SMOOTH ON THE BOTTOMS. THE DRIVERS SIDE MAT WILL OFTEN CAUSE CLUTCH PEDAL NOT TO RELEASE WHEN SHIFTING, AS THE MAT OBSTRUCTS THE PEDAL FROM RELEASING. THIS ISSUE WAS REPORTED TO LOCAL DEALERSHIPS AND I WAS TOLD THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WOULD BE DONE. *TR
RED STEERING WHEEL AND PADLOCK WARNING INDICATOR LIGHT IS ON - STEERING WHEEL WILL NOT LOCK. THE MOST COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS FAULT CAN CAUSE A "NO START" CONDITION. THE "NO START" CONDITION CAN ARISE AND THE STEERING WHEEL COULD LOCK WHILE DRIVING. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328I. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A LEFT TURN, THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND WAS ABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO STATED THAT THE PISTON VALVE AREA TIMING SYSTEM WAS DEFECTIVE. THE DEALER REPROGRAMMED THE ENGINE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 80,000.
THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NHTSA HAS LEARNED OF THROUGH SEVERAL COMPLAINTS. WHY HASN'T ANYTHING BEEN DONE? MY 2007 BMW 328XI DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS HAVE FAILED AT 52,660 MILES: THE KEY FOB WILL NOT UNLOCK THE DOORS (THE DOOR HANDLES WILL LIGHT UP). I HAVE TO USE THE VALET KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR, BUT ONLY THE DRIVER AND REAR PASSENGER DOORS WILL UNLOCK. EACH OF THESE DOORS (DRIVER AND REAR PASSENGER) CAN ONLY BE UNLOCKED FROM THE INSIDE BY PULLING ON THE HANDLE. THE OTHER TWO DOORS CANNOT BE UNLOCKED AT ALL. THIS ISSUE IS OBVIOUSLY A SAFETY CONCERN: SUPPOSE I WERE IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE ONLY WAY OUT OF THE CAR WAS ONE OF THE TWO DOORS WHICH ARE NOT UNLOCKABLE? *TR
2007 BMW 328XI. LOCKING SYSTEM FAILED. UNABLE TO UNLOCK PASSENGER DOORS EITHER WITH THE KEY OR BY PULLING THE DOOR HANDLE FROM THE INSIDE. ONLY THE DRIVER DOOR WAS ABLE TO OPEN FROM THE INSIDE. THIS PRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT SAFETY ISSUE. I HAD TO HAVE MY WIFE AND KIDS CRAWL OUT THE WINDOWS ON CHRISTMAS EVE IN THE CHURCH PARKING LOT SO THAT WE COULD ATTEND CHURCH. BMW NEEDS TO ISSUE A RECALL AND HAVE THIS PROBLEM FIXED PROPERLY. *TR
MY AUTOMATIC DOOR LOCKS FAILED IN OCTOBER 2010. A FUSE WAS REPLACED. THEN THEY FAILED AGAIN IN DECEMBER 2010. BOTH TIMES I WAS OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. I USED THE MANUAL KEY IN THE KEY FOB TO OPEN THE DRIVER'S DOOR. IF I HAD BEEN INSIDE OF THE CAR WHEN IT HAPPENED, THE ONLY WAY OUT WOULD HAVE BEEN THROUGH THE WINDOWS. WHEN THE LOCKS FAILED, ALL DOORS WERE FROZEN CLOSED AND THE INTERIOR OVERRIDE DID NOT WORK. THIS COULD BE SERIOUS IF THERE WAS A NEED TO QUICKLY EXIT THE CAR. ESPECIALLY IF IT INVOLVED PETS, CHILDREN, THE ELDERLY. *TR
COULDN'T UNLOCK DRIVERS DOOR FROM THE INSIDE, HAD TO OPEN THE WINDOWS AND USE THE KEY TO UNLOCK THE DOOR FROM THE OUTSIDE ON MY 2007 BMW 335XI. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 328XI. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH AND ATTEMPTING TO MAKE A RIGHT HAND TURN, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME STUCK, CAUSING HIM TO HIT A WALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHO FILED A REPORT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER CONDUCTED AN INVESTIGATION WHICH WAS INCONCLUSIVE. THEY WERE UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE UNKNOWN. A POLICE REPORT WAS AVAILABLE. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE MOTORWAY AND CLEANED MY WINDSCREEN WHEN A PIECE OF MY VEHICLE FELL OFF AND BECAME POTENTIALLY A DANGEROUS PROJECTILE. THE FAILURE IS DUE TO THE SCREEN WASH JET COVER AND JET ATTACHED TO IT COMING SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE. BMW STATE THAT THIS CAN COME OFF DUE TO ICE FORMING ON THE WASHER JETS, SO CAN OCCUR AT ANY TIME WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE BELOW FREEZING. THE CONSEQUENCES ARE THE COVER AND JET BECOME SEPARATED FROM THE VEHICLE POTENTIALLY CAUSING OTHER VEHICLES TO SWERVE, ITEM ACTS AS A PROJECTILE SO COULD DAMAGE/CRACK A WINDSCREEN OR POTENTIALLY BURST A TIRE IF CONTACT IS MADE. TO CORRECT THE FAILURE THE PART NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. OLD PART IS NOT AVAILABLE DUE TO COMING OFF VEHICLE WHILST ON THE MOTORWAY. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 BMW 335I. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH AND ACCELERATING THE CONTACT FELT A VIBRATION IN THE FRONT END OF THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS A VOLUNTARY RECALL FOR THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND A SOFTWARE UPDATE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN INTO THE DEALER FOR THE RECALL REPAIRS AND TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE OF THE VIBRATION. THE TECHNICIANS STATED THAT THE LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND SPARK PLUGS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIRS WERE NOT MADE BY THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE A LOW PRESSURE FUEL PUMP AND SPARK PLUGS WERE REPLACED. AFTER THE REPAIRS WERE MADE THE CONTACT CONTINUED TO EXPERIENCE THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN STATED THAT THE FUEL INJECTOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE HAD AN AFTER MARKET WARRANTY AND THEY WOULD HAVE THE VEHICLE INSPECTED BY ONE OF THEIR INSPECTORS. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 70,000.
THE SIDE MIRROR DEFECT OR NOT WORKING AUTOMATICALLY FOLD FORWARD AT ANYTIME. THE SPRING NOT SEAT IN PLACE, IT ON TOP RAIL DISK SUSPENTION AND MAY POP OUT SIDE PLACE. THE SPRING MAY NOT FIT.

MY WIFE AND I HAVE A 2007 BMW 328I. IN 2010, WE GOT IN THE VEHICLE AND THERE WAS A STEERING WHEEL LOCK WARNING ON THE DASH. WE TOOK IT TO GET LOOKED AT AND THEY STATED IT WAS A "FAULT CODE". WE HAD THE EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE IN 2012 AND 2014 WITH THE SAME RESULT, "FAULT CODE". WE NOW HAVE THIS ICON WARNING AGAIN. THIS TIME WE ARE TOLD THAT THE WHOLE STEERING COLUMN WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED ($1200). ACCORDING TO MANY REFERENCES, THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND BMW IS AWARE OF IT. ALSO, ACCORDING TO SEVERAL REFERENCES, THERE IS NO WARNING OR PREDICTION WHEN THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK WILL FAIL IN THE LOCKED POSITION. IF YOU ARE FIRST GETTING INTO THE VEHICLE AND THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK HAS FAILED IN THE LOCKED POSITION, IT WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO START THE ENGINE. THE QUESTION THAT I HAVE IS WHETHER THE STEERING WHEEL LOCK CAN FAIL IN THE LOCKED POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING DRIVEN. APPARENTLY, THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN RAISED BY NUMEROUS PEOPLE. I HAVE ASKED THIS QUESTION TO THE DEALERSHIP AS WELL AS SEVERAL BMW WEBSITES. THE RESULTS ARE, THEY DON'T KNOW OR THE ANSWERS HAVE BEEN INCONSISTENT AND OFTEN CONTRADICTORY. I JUST PURCHASED A 2007 USED BMW 328XI WITH ~45K MILES. ONE WEEK TO THE DATE OF PURCHASE, THE TIRE PRESSURE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON IN THE CAR. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP (STILL UNDER WARRANTY FOR 5K MORE MILES) AND THEY TOLD ME I HAD A CRACKED RIM, "LIKELY DUE TO IMPACT." ABOUT ONE MONTH LATER, FUEL SYSTEM FAILED ON INTERSTATE CAUSING VEHICLE TO LOOSE POWER IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC WITH HIGH RISK OF ACCIDENT AND INJURY. CAR TOWED TO DEALER FOR ANALYSIS AND REPLACEMENT OF FUEL PUMP, KEPT FOR MORE THAN A WEEK. ONE MONTH LATER, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURRED AGAIN. RESEARCHED RECALLS AND COMPLAINTS REVEALED A LONG HISTORY OF CONSUMER COMPLAINTS DESCRIBING MY EXACT CIRCUMSTANCES. PROCEEDING WITH VERY COSTLY REPAIR BUT APPREHENSIVE ABOUT RESULT, SAFETY AND DEPENDABILITY OF VEHICLE. MY VEHICLE IS 2007 MODEL BMW 335I COUPE. I WAS ON THE FREEWAY 405 GOING APPROXIMATELY 70 MILES PER HOUR. THEN SUDDENLY AN ENGINE WARNING LIGHT "ENGINE MALFUNCTION" SIGN COMES UP WHICH LOWERS THE RPM AND THE SPEED OUTPUT OF THE ENGINE TO AROUND 30~ 40. I HAVE TO QUICKLY MERGE THE VEHICLE FROM THE INNER LANES TO THE RIGHT GOING ONTO THE CURB SINCE THERE WAS NO CURB ON THE INNER LANES. AFTER APPROXIMATELY 3 MINUTES AS I SLOWLY GUIDED MY VEHICLE TO THE SIDE, THE ENGINE SHUTS OFF ON ITS OWN WITH STUTTERING SOUND AND ENGINE CRANKING. I RESTARTED THE ENGINE SEVERAL TIMES TO NO AVAIL. I WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS THE SUDDEN SLOW DOWN AND ENGINE SHUT OFF MIGHT HAPPEN WHEN I AM IN THE MIDDLE OF THE FREEWAY AND THE CARS BEHIND OR NEXT TO ME MIGHT EASILY HIT ME WITH TYPICAL FREEWAY SPEED OF 70 MPH. I CALLED THE TWO TRUCK AND HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A BMW CENTER. THEY INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND BELIEVED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP IS BAD AND WILL REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP FOR ME. IT APPEARS TO BE THAT THIS VERY SAME ISSUE APPEARED QUITE OFTEN TO A NUMBER OF 335I OR OTHER BMW MODELS USING THE SAME ENGINE, IN PARTICULAR TO THE 07 AND 08 MODELS. MORE OVER, A LOT OF THE CAR OWNERS HAVE THE SAME ISSUE HAPPENED TO THEM EVEN AFTER THEIR FUEL PUMP REPLACED ONCE OR EVEN TWICE. IT SEEMS LIKE THERE IS NO ABSOLUTE FIX FOR SUCH ISSUE AND IT POSES AS A TREMENDOUS DANGER FOR BMW DRIVERS WITH THIS SPECIFIC ENGINE SINCE YOU CANNOT BE CERTAIN WHEN HE PROBLEM WILL RE-OCCUR. I HAVE HAD MY 3RD HIGH PRESSURE FUEL PUMP (HPFP) FAIL IN THE 3.5 YEARS THAT I HAVE OWNED MY CAR. ALL THREE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY, BUT IT SEEMS TO BE A DESIGN FLAW SINCE THIS IS A RECURRING PROBLEM IN MY MODEL. ALMOST EVERYONE PEOPLE IN MY CAR CLUB WITH A 2007 OR 2008 MODEL YEAR 335I HAS HAD THEIR HPFP REPLACED AT LEAST ONCE. THE CAR BREAKS DOWN WITHOUT WARNING AND GENERALLY WHEN COMES TO A COMPLETE STOP. UPON FAILURE, THE ENGINE WARNS OF MALFUNCTIONS AND CONTINUE TO DRIVE IN A "LIMP" MODE, OFTEN STALLING WHEN COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP...SHUDDERING DURING THE DRIVE UNTIL I AM ABLE TO BRING TO A DEALERSHIP. I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE THAT ALL THREE FAILURE HAVE OCCURRED DURING LOW SPEEDS AND STALLING OCCURRING AT STOP LIGHTS AND NOT DURING HIGH SPEED OPERATION. IF IT WASN'T FOR MY BMW ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE, I WOULD HAVE BEEN STRANDED ON ONE OF THE THREE OCCASIONS. BMW KNOWS THERE IS A REAL PROBLEM BUT REFUSES TO RECALL. THEY HAVE ISSUED DEALER SERVICE BULLETINS AND HAVE INCREASED THE WARRANTY ON THE HPFP REPLACEMENTS FOR 100,000 MILES. HOWEVER, A 100,000 MILE WARRANTY DOES NOT FIX REPLACING THE HPFP EVERY FEW MONTHS (MY 2ND IN 4 MONTHS). BMW MUST ISSUE A RECALL AS THIS IS DANGEROUS AND UNPREDICTABLE, ESPECIALLY SINCE THIS THEIR IS NO SYMPTOMS FOR THE IMPENDING MALFUNCTION AND THERE IS NO USER ERROR. *TR

AGAIN, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE KEY WAS NOT ABLE TO BE EJECTED. THE SAME BMW DEALERSHIP WAS UNABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM, BUT THEY SAID THEY INSTALLED SOFTWARE UPDATES. IN SEPT 2010 I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND AT A LOW SPEED WHEN THE CAR LOST ALL STEERING CONTROL, THE ACCELERATOR DID NOTHING WHEN I PUSHED DOWN ON IT. I HAD TO PUSH THE CAR OUT OF THE ROAD. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WAS STILL ON, AND THE KEY WOULD NOT EJECT ITSELF. MINUTES LATER, I WAS ABLE TO GET THE KEY OUT, AND AFTER I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WENT OFF. (I HAVE PHOTOS OF IT ON). THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DIFFERENT BMW DEALERSHIP--BUT ONCE AGAIN, THEY WERE UNABLE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THEY TESTED THE FUEL--THE FUEL WAS FINE. THEY TOLD ME THEY HAD INCENTIVE TO FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE CAR SO THAT THEY COULD BE PAID. I HAVE CONTACTED BMW N. AMERICA SEVERAL TIMES, BUT TO NO AVAIL. AT ONE POINT, I ASKED WHAT IT WOULD TAKE FOR THEM TO FIX THE CAR-- PERSONAL INJURY? PROPERTY DAMAGE? THE BMW REP SAID NO--BUT AGREED THAT I'D JUST HAVE TO WAIT IT OUT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. AFTER SENDING A LETTER TO BMW N. AMERICA THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP SAID I WOULD NEED A LOCAL DEALER TO CONSENT TO HAVING AN ENGINEER LOOK AT MY CAR. THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
