This page combines three types of NHTSA data: recall campaigns (official manufacturer or government actions), owner complaints (unverified consumer reports), and crash test ratings (where available). A vehicle with many complaints is not necessarily less reliable — complaint volume correlates with sales volume and vehicle age. Recalls indicate identified defects, not overall quality. To compare this model year with others, use the year navigation in the sidebar or return to the model overview page.
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, 6-SERIES, AND MODEL YEAR 2002-2008 7-SERIES VEHICLES. A CHECK VALVE OF THE BRAKE VACUUM PUMP MAY LEAK A SMALL AMOUNT OF LUBRICATING OIL. OVER TIME THIS COULD RESULT IN CONTAMINATION OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER.
Remedy Status
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL REPAIR THE VEHICLES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 24, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 5-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2004-2010 6-SERIES, MODEL YEAR 2006-2010 M5, AND MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 M6 VEHICLES. THE INSULATED BULKHEAD CONNECTOR FOR THE POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ATTACHED TO THE TRUNK FLOOR PANEL, WHICH CAN LEAD TO A LOOSENING OF THE BOLT CONNECTION. AS IT LOOSENS, AN INCREASE IN ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE AT THIS CABLE CONNECTION IS POSSIBLE AND COULD CAUSE THE CABLE CONNECTION TO OVERHEAT.
Remedy Status
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND SECURE THE BATTERY BOLT CABLE CONNECTION AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 30, 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW CUSTOMER RELATIONS AND SERVICES AT 1-800-525-7417.
The contact owns a 2010 BMW 650I. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and then lost motive power, with the engine malfunction message displayed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the VANOS system had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.
Valve stem seal issue. Car burns excessive oil. More than a quart every several 100 miles. The issue seems to be consistent across this engine model number N62. My vin number is [XXX] and as a multiple BMW owner, I think BMW should recall and fix all BMWs with these issues that are appear to be a manufacturing defect. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 2010 650I BMW THE RECALL NUMBER IS 10V4466000 FOR THE BRAKE VACUMM PUMP LEAKING OIL AND UPON SPEAKING WITH SOMEONE AT THE BMW 800 NUMBER THEY INDICATED THAT THIS ISSUE WAS VIN NUMBER SPECIFIC. MY ARGUMENT AGAINST THIS ISSUE IS THAT IF IT WAS A VIN SPECIFIC ISSUE BUT OTHER VEHICLES IN THAT SAME YEAR ARE AFFECTED THEN WHY WOULD THIS NOT BE AN ISSUE THAT IS ACCEPTED BY THE DEALERSHIP ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE VEHICLE HAS LESS THAN 100,000 MILES AND IS LESS THAN A YEAR OLD. THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE ENGINE DAMAGE WHICH CAN CAUSE A DANGEROUS DRIVING SITUATION.
WARNING LIGHT "PASSENGER RESTRAINING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION". VERY SERIOUS FAILURE AND DIRECT IMPACT TO PASSENGER SAFETY. SANTA MONICA BMW REFUSED TO EVEN LOOK AT IT WITHOUT CHARGING $330 DIAGNOSTIC FEE. REFUSED TO REPAIR. REFUSED TO WORK WITH 3RD PARTY EXTENDED WARRANTY INSURER. *TR
SUFFERED SUDDEN ENGINE STALL IN AN EXPRESSWAY WITH NO APPARENT EXPLANATION OR REASON LAST MONTH. THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME THIS OCCURRED. THE FIRST TIME WAS APPROXIMATELY SEVERAL MONTHS EARLIER AND AFTER LIMPING TO A SAFE PLACE AND TURNING THE MOTOR OFF, RESTING FOR A WHILE, IT RESTARTED. I HAD THE VEHICLE SERVICED DURING ITS ANNUAL OIL CHANGE AND THE DEALER INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE SUFFERED AN ENGINE MISFIRE IN TWO PISTONS, ALLEGEDLY DUE TO TWO FAULTY COILS. ABOUT A MONTH LATER I SUFFERED THE SECOND INCIDENT IN AN EXPRESSWAY BUT IN HEAVIER TRAFFIC. THE MOTOR WAS VIOLENTLY SHAKING AND IT COULD NOT ACCELERATE SO I WAS UNABLE TO CHANGE LANES OR REACH THE ROADSIDE SAFETY LANE. THE VEHICLE BARELY LIMPED AT ABOUT 25 MPH. AFTER MANAGING TO GET OFF THE ROAD I TURNED THE MOTOR OFF AND AFTER WAITING A WHILE WHEN I TURNED IT BACK ON IT WORKED ADEQUATELY. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AGAIN WHO INFORMED THAT IT HAD SUFFERED ANOTHER ENGINE MISFIRE BUT IN TWO OTHER PISTONS, ALSO ALLEGEDLY DUE TO TWO OTHER FAULTY COILS. I HAVE BEEN A BMW OWNER FOR 20 YEARS AND NEVER SUFFERED ANYTHING SIMILAR. THE EXPLANATION GIVEN IS HIGHLY SUSPECT. THIS SUDDEN AND UNEXPLAINED ENGINE MISFIRE AND STALL IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND MUST BE INVESTIGATED. *JS
