NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 BMW X5. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
My family and I were traveling from Maryland to Florida, with a planned stop in Atlanta. We were driving our 2013 BMW X5 x Drive 35i and were traveling southbound on [XXX] through Greenville, South Carolina when the incident occurred. While driving at highway speed, my husband suddenly noticed multiple error messages appearing on the vehicle’s display screen - air bag malfunction, 4x4 malfunction, stabilization, etc. He immediately began pulling the vehicle over. Within moments, he observed smoke and visible flames coming from the rear driver’s-side area of the vehicle. He urgently shouted for me and our daughter to get out of the car. What followed happened extremely fast, within approximately 15 seconds. I yelled for my daughter to unbuckle and run. In a state of panic, I grabbed our dog, and as we tried to exit the vehicle, the fire spread rapidly and aggressively. Thick, black smoke engulfed the area and we fled on foot, coughing and struggling to breathe from the smoke. By the time we reached a safe distance, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Thankfully, we were able to escape without physical injury, but the incident was terrifying and could very easily have resulted in serious injury or loss of life. The vehicle was completely destroyed, along with all of our personal belongings - cell phones, laptops, clothing, luggage, etc. We have since checked for recalls associated with the vehicle’s VIN and were told none were listed. However, a vehicle should not spontaneously catch fire while being operated normally on a highway. The sudden onset, rapid spread of the fire, and lack of warning raise serious concerns about a potential defect, whether electrical, fuel-related, or otherwise. We believe this incident was preventable and that there may have been a failure in design, manufacturing, or warning. We had the insurance company and BMW inspect the vehicle, but the fire destroyed the car entirely, and a cause "could not be determined." The EGR system in my 2013 BMW x5d has failed. There is a recall notice for the EGR system on the 2014 BMW x5d with the same engine and exhaust system related to a fire warning. It would seem to make sense to include the my car in the recall under the circumstances.
The componet that failed is the cars electric system in the rear. Battery gets so hot its melted a 2nd orange box on top of the battery. Burned a hole right through. Attempted to start the vehicle, now it's throwing big sparks in the rear battery compartment. ABS warnings, brake warnings, it leaks. It will not start again! We have no transportation. Noone seems to be very concerned about the matter. Atleast 7 open, very dangerous recalls on this vehicle. How come someone has to die from the companies failure to fix what they know is wrong? This vehicle is paid for, owned by a Middle/lower class hard working single mom. I've seen to many cases of people who aren't financially threatening get delt a ball full of crap. All walks of life pay really good money for bmws cars. How about bmw returns the favor and keeps their word. My car is a death trap according to bmw. What do we do if the company won't cooperate
The primary component that has malfunctioned is the engine's valve stem seals, which are available for inspection upon request. This defect has led to excessive oil consumption, which has now escalated to a critical safety issue. The vehicle is emitting a huge amount of thick smoke from the exhaust with a strong smell of burnt oil, and multiple engine warning lights are illuminated. I have stopped driving the vehicle, as the excessive smoke creates a significant visibility hazard for myself and others, and the underlying issue presents a risk of sudden engine failure. The problem has not been formally confirmed by a dealer, as the General Manager at BMW of Rockville dismissed the repair as not "worth fixing." It is important to note that BMW has been aware of this N63 engine issue and created a Customer Care Package (CCP) to address it, yet I was never notified, despite regular service at authorized centers. The vehicle has not been inspected for this specific safety concern by the manufacturer or others. The initial symptom was excessive oil consumption, which has been ongoing for some time and has now worsened to the current safety-critical state.
Component or system that failed/malfunctioned N63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 engine – excessive oil consumption (1 quart every 300–400 miles) caused by failed valve-stem seals and leaking turbocharger coolant feed/return lines. Parts are still on the vehicle and available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Sudden loss of engine oil can lead to catastrophic engine failure, bearing damage, or fire. Leaking coolant onto hot turbochargers creates risk and sudden coolant loss/overheating while driving. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer/independent service center? Yes – confirmed by Paul Miller BMW Wayne, NJ on June 30, 2025 (invoice #524818). Codes: EN79 (engine oil leak diagnosis), CS001 (turbo coolant lines leaking), DE001 (changeover valve cracked/coolant leak). Dealer quoted $12,487 to repair. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance, or others? Inspected by Paul Miller BMW (authorized BMW dealer) on June 30, 2025. No police or insurance involvement. Warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure? Low engine oil warning lamp repeatedly illuminates Visible coolant "steam" around hood and under vehicle after parking. Strong coolant smell from engine bay. Symptoms began approximately 18-24 months ago and have steadily worsened. Additional notes (optional but helpful) Called BMW corporate, refused (said no information) to perform known Customer Care Package B001314 (March 2025 supersession) despite documented symptoms and no mileage limitation in the bulletin. Vehicle is available for immediate NHTSA or BMW inspection.
Check engine light indicated on the dash, immediately took it to an nearby auto mechanic Tuffy in Fort Myers Florida, off of Daniel's parkway. The said the diagnostic said it was valve cover and gasket replacement. Got a second opinion at Apex Auto in Tire in Fort Myers. Had them install a new valve cover and gasket cover. Check engine light was still visible. Probing a further diagnostic. They indicated that this vehicle should be fixed under recall 23V-707. And would suggest a local BMW dealership to perform that service. The mechanic said this was a known problem, this engine is a N55 and under the model list as E70 X5. I retrieved the vehicle and spoke with BMW Fort Myers which indicated that there not an open recall that they will not do a recall claim. because of the symptoms of the vehicle smoking and rattle I'm afraid of a potential engine compartment fire from a broken bolt.
My 2013 X5 is not on the recall list, but it is experiencing the same issue described in the recall for the 2013 X5 ( see below). Recently, I began receiving a message on my dashboard indicating the alert related to the parking brake. Two weeks ago, when I started the vehicle, I was unable to shift into any gear, and also the parking brake malfunction appeared on my dashboard. Please refer to the pictures below, which show the active alert related to the brake and gear issue. I kindly request that my vehicle be added to the recall list so that this critical safety issue can be addressed. I can only imagine the potential consequences if this malfunction had occurred while driving. Fortunately, the car was parked at the time, and no one was injured. __________________________________________ A recall affecting the 2013 BMW X5 xDrive50i, including potential brake issues, is related to a faulty "Integrated Brake System" which may not function properly, potentially leading to extended braking distances or loss of vehicle control; check with BMW or your local dealer to see if your specific vehicle is affected by this recall and to schedule a repair. Key points about the recall: Problem: The integrated brake system may not function according to specifications, potentially causing extended braking distances or loss of control. Affected vehicles: Multiple BMW models, including the 2013 X5 xDrive50i
I noticed smoke comes from engine compartment while I was driving. It has been going on for a few months and I found out the BMW Water Pump Electrical Connector related recall (No 24V-608) for Year 2012-2018 including X5. 'What could happen' in their recall is exactly what I'm experiencing but my VIN number is not part of their recall even though the year and model matches. I called BMW and they said it goes by specific VIN and didn't provide details of why my car is not included. I don't feel safe driving and would like it to be checked by BMW if it is related with the recall. They couldn't help at this point and refer me to NHTSA.
After driving for an hour I noticed smoke coming from under the hood of the car, I opened the hood to and noticed the smoke coming from under the plastic cover which covers the turbo and catalytic converter In That area. After removing the cover I saw a bright flame coming from under the hood.
2013 X5 Xdrive35i overheating temperature icon appears drive moderately to red hot temperature icon but doesn’t overflow. Possible water pump and electrical issues. Smell something burning.
I had been getting battery discharge warnings off and on. I went to fill my car up with gas yesterday, and after I filled it up, the car wouldn't start. After having it towed to my house, my husband and I were looking at it this morning. We discovered that the battery charge distribution box had melted and even burned a hole in the cover.
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle was sluggish. No warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for routine maintenance and to address the vehicle driving sluggish. The mechanic diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the valve-tronic camshaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. There was an existing for similar vehicles; however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
While driving locally at a 20-25 mph speed my vehicle shuttered violently and a huge thunk was heard which sounded as if the engine had dropped out. I immediately pulled over to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle underneath and under hood but nothing was detected by me. Thankfully I was on a local street with grass side and not highway driving at greater speed and without location to safely park. No warning lights had flashed prior, and no warning lights came on when I restarted vehicle. I limped the vehicle a short distance to a auto repair shop for diagnosis. It was reported to me the front drive shaft had broken out and fallen down into the skid plate. It was given to me and I still have the shaft which is broken at the front fork with one fork missing. I had the 2013 BMW X5 taken to the local BMW dealer and was told this vehicle is not covered by the NHTSA Recall 17V138000 for this model BMW due to my VIN being excluded. The vehicle is 12 years old but has only 114,000 miles. I cannot understand how such a major safety component failure for a maker and model can exclude certain VIN vehicles and that major safety component actuall fail in that excluded vehicle. At this point BMW is denying any responsibility for this issue. I feel as if I could have been killed, and possibly killed others, if this had happened in a higher speed and higher traffic situation.
Driving at approximately 60 mph, suddenly - a lot of vibration and an incredibly loud bang. We were able to continue driving. On investigation, confirmed that there had been a catastrophic failure of the front drive-shaft. On further investigation, this is a known issue with this make & model and there was a recall [XXX]: Replace Front Driveshaft in 2017. This recall literature describes everything in the document as to what actually happened. I called BMW of Westchester where I purchased car on [XXX] and left message, they did not return my call/message. I then proceed to call BMW USA (1-800-831-1117) on [XXX] and as to how come car had not been called and concern with potential gap in their system. They explained that this recall only applied to cars produced on April-22, 2013 and my car had been produced on [XXX]. Apparently, they changed the front driveshaft part. However - as you can see, this seems to be too much of a coincidence. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The EGR Cooler went bad when my car's mileage is at 113,254. BMW have an active recall for EGR cooler [XXX] . However, it only covers 2014-2017 BMW X5 xDrive35d. I have a 2013 BMW X5 xDrive35d, which has the same N57T engine as the 2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d model. The engine light was on. I brought it to the BMW of Fairfax dealership to check. They told me that it is unsafe to drive the car if the EGR Cooler is not replaced. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
There is an open recall on BMW X5D and other BMW diesel models due to a fire hazard, the recall warns of an EGR code warning on the vehicle. My 2013 BMW X5D 3.5 has that warning code, however BMW claims that there isn’t a recall on it. My VIN is [XXX], and for the last 5 or 6 years I was told by the guy who was my rep at the dealership there was a possible recall, but BMW was having issues keeping up with demand for the parts. Now I have this warning, the dealership is denying the warranty. Yet I’m still at risk. INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
1) The power steering completely failed without any warning as a result of the serpentine belt failing catastrophically. 2) The failure happened in rush hour traffic right as the light turned green to turn left on an extremely busy intersection. I couldn’t turn the wheel and was a few inches from a head on collision with several large trucks which were also turning to the opposite direction. 3) The service center explained that this issue is the most common that they see on bmws with the same engine. They alleged that BMW used a faulty power steering bolt that would leak fluid onto the belt, eventually leading to catastrophic engine failure due to the shredded belt being sucked into the crankshaft seal. 4) Yes. 5) The steering was heavy but the bmw dealer assured me the vehicle was in excellent shape just a few weeks prior to this incident.
During the past raining season, car battery compartment flooded creating a fire/electrical hazard during operation and addition total malfunction of instruments, lighting, warning systems in general, airbags, rendering the vehicle useless. The issue is well documented online by various owners, BMW stop assisting owners of vehicles that have the same issue of flooding. Please assist with any possible help to resolve the problem(s) of the vehicle 2013 BMW X5
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated while driving 45 MPH, the front drive shaft failed to operate as designed, rendering the vehicle undrivable. The contact stated that during the failure, the driveshaft detached, and caused damage to the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer, and the front drive shaft and hydraulic steering lines were replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V138000 (Power Train). The failure mileage was 160,000.
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated that while pulling into his garage, he smelled an abnormal odor. Additionally, he noticed smoke coming from the tail pipes. The contact referenced the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V119000 (Engine and Engine Cooling). The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000.
Vehicle died while driving, luckily it happened when pulling in to a store versus on the busy highway that we had just been traveling on, would not restart. BMW Roanoke determined it to be a failed diesel injection pump. If this had occurred on the highway it could have been a very dangerous situation. I had found that previous and later models of this vehicle have been recalled for this issue, but not the 2013 model. Which seems odd since the 2013 uses the same or a very similar diesel injection pump. The repair cost is more the vehicle value.
I have been trying to have my car repaired last year. I have expressed to BMW USA that none of their certified dealers want to touch a diesel and/or work on one that another dealership had done poor work on. They have asked me to continue reaching out to this dealership even though I have mentioned I do not feel comfortable about it as I have slipped thru the cracks multiple times with them which they wont admit to. They are understaffed and have employees that are broken from being overworked, are constantly rude, careless, forgetting things and will never admit to error even when you show them mistakes that have even been documented in writing that are a liability. Their mechanics do rushed inspections and the last 2 times I have brought my car in to be scanned they completely disregard all concerns brought up prior. NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE ON A CAR WORKED BY CENTURY WEST BMW and/or A DIESEL. BMW USA is aware of this and its in their favor as its allowed this matter to drag on past my warranty period in their favor. BMW USA is aware there are odometer stamps that confirm codes appeared within coverage yet neglect to acknowledge it from me and only will from a dealer that is a mess, cannot find all my records which I have expressed I have copies of diagnostic scans yet they wont take my word or documents. These delays have resulted not only in exhausting and upsetting me but also further wear and damages to my car with every day this drags on which I pray everyday my car does not break down. This is my only car, I am not in the position to buy a new car or pay for a 5k+ repair and/or anymore emission repairs due to faulty diesel parts, repairs or emission technology which has resulted in many lawsuits against BMW. Its saddening to have to go thru this considering I have been loyal to the brand for many years, this is my second time purchasing a BMW and hoping these experiences wont make it my last. I need help at this time instead of being brushed off.
When the engine cooling system fails (which is common) the vehicle shuts down wherever it is....the occupants of the vehicle are in high traffic areas and are subject to being injured and/or killed as a result of the vehicle being undrivable at the time. It is VITAL that BMW be held responsible for the cooling system(s) optimal operation regardless of the age or mileage of the vehicle due to the safety of occupants when there is a major or catastrophic failure. If this agency does it's due diligence, it will find a mulitude of such failures
The doors locked and does not open even from the inside trapping passengers inside the car. Door locks click into place and the doors can't be opened from the inside. Pull the handle and the lock will pop up, but the door won't open. Release the handle and the lock snaps back down into its "locked" state (it drops back down as if it has a spring on it). trapping people inside is extremely dangerous in case of an emergency. The only way is to break the windows and crawl from the window but not everyone can do that depending on their age and weight.
The Drive Shaft was replaced as part of a recall in 2017 and the damage from that drive shaft has caused an issue in the transfer case resulting in humming and other periodic noises and vibrations. The dealer asked for $5300 to replace the Transfer Case and I have stopped driving it as it could lead to an accident. Mechanics have said this is VERY COMMON in those cars with this recall. https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/2017/RCRIT-17V138-1965.pdf I have reached out to BMW USA who said to reach out to you as they will not honor the repair unless a BMW certified mechanic states that it is related OR NHTSA agrees it is a safety issue. The car has 65000 miles on it.
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) passive reservoir failure. The SCR passive reservoir was replaced; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and diagnosed with EGR module failure. The contact was informed that the EGR module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The failure mileage was 104,370.
The EGR Cooler has gone bad and I have been driving around with carbon monoxide in my car causing extreme headaches and nausea. I did not know that was the problem and it took 2 visits to the dealer to figure it out. The EGR cooler was dirty and blocked before we purchased the vehicle and there have been a couple other indicators that this was an issue. Also the car did NOT have an engine light on to show there were any issues. I could have passed out if I wasn't driving with the windows open for the last couple months! I took to an other mechanic before taking it to the dealer which told me to take to the dealer because they thought there was a major issue. There may be other issues with the manifold that haven't been exposed yet either. There are other vehicles made during this time that had a recall but not my 2013 X5 d35! There are many others out on sites complaining of the same issues. Seems like this make and year got MISSED and could have caused major health issues and/or death!
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. The odor of smoke was present inside the cabin of the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer was contacted regarding the failure. The manufacturer was not yet contacted. The failure mileage was 65,000.
The contact owns a 2013 BMW X5. The contact stated that after starting the vehicle, the parking brake warning light illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the parking brake needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided the contact with a case number. The approximate failure mileage was 49,000.
Rod bearings, got rod knock. When is bmw going to fix this? This is my second N55 engine to dies from this problem, first one being my 3 series. They should be held accountable for this problem.
I own a 2013 BMW X5 with the soft-close door feature. On June 2, 2021, I was making a right-hand turn when the driver's door flew all the way open without warning. The door then slammed shut as I finished the turn, injuring my left wrist. It was determined that the soft-close door latch mechanism is failing and needs replaced. The soft-close latch does not consistently secure the driver's door. No warning was given by the vehicle to indicate the door is open or not latched properly. I informed BMWNA of the issue and they declined to offer any assistance with the repair, estimated to cost $900.
After driving, sometimes while driving the engine smokes
CAR HAS ONLY 37,777 MILES AND THE MOTOR/ENGINE IS LOUD KNOCKING. ALWAYS ON TIME THE MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN SUPPLIED BY THE BMW DEALER SINCE CAR WAS NEW. I HEARD THAT THIS PROBLEM IS AFFECTING SIMILAR VEHICLES. CAR IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY.
As I was exiting a public Starbucks parking lot near my home with my foot on the brake slowly releasing it (as I had a car in front and behind me) my 2013 BWM X5 accelerated on it's own. I quickly glanced at the pedals thinking I might have stepped on the accelerator instead of the brake, but no. My foot was on the brake. I stomped on the brake as hard as I could while the vehicle was jerking and stalling. The car in front of me exited the parking lot and luckily I didn't crash into it. This kept going for about a minute it was as if I had been stepping on the accelerator and brake at the same time. I tried turning off the vehicle, but nothing happened. Finally, after about a minute (or maybe a little more) the engine turned off and the car stopped moving. There was an ATM the right of me with a few people making line. They offered to help me push the vehicle out of the way as I was blocking a very tight parking lot exit, but I was unable to put the car on neutral, drive or anything. I was in shock and very scared of what had just happened. I had my car towed to the nearest auto repair shop where I explained the situation the the auto repair people. I was advised to call BWM as the repair shop was unwilling to give me a diagnosis due to the nature of the incident. I called BMW of North America, reported the incident and after about 2 weeks BWM had my vehicle towed to BMW of San Diego where an investigation was going to be done. After 3-4 weeks I received the results. Since the engine did not start they could not find the cause of what made the vehicle accelerate on it's own in such a way. They did have other irrelevant findings like an after market oil filter and debris in the oil. The final report was that the engine had to be replaced. I asked for an estimate from BMW and they came back with $20,993.50 (which is more than what I paid for the car). Even if I was to replace the engine, I don't trust the car anymore. BMW of San Diego is holding my car as a courtesy.
AFTER THE PASSENGER WOULD VACATE THE CAR THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT ALARM WOULD COME ON AND STAY ON TILL I WOULD TAKE ACTION BY HITTING THE SEAT WITH MY PALM. I TRIED THREE TIMES IN HAVING THE DEALERSHIP TO REPAIR THE SEAT PAD SENSOR WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THEY SAID THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE IT. AFTER THE WARRANT EXPIRED I RETURNED IT THE DEALERSHIP AND THEN THEY SAID IT WAS A DEFECTIVE SEAT PAD SENSOR. (UGH)
AFTER DROPPING OFF MY BMW X5M FOR SERVICE AT A BMW DEALERSHIP ON 01/27/2021, (THEY HAD THE VEHICLE FOR TWO DAYS), BMW CALLED US, TO INFORM US THAT THE VEHICLE WAS READY TO BE PICKED UP. MY WIFE DROVE THE CAR DIRECTLY HOME, WITHOUT STOPPING, (20 MILES), PARKED THE VEHICLE IN OUR GARAGE, TURNED THE CAR OFF, AND TEN MINUTES LATER, THE ENGINE CAUGHT ON FIRE AND BURNED THROUGHOUT AND ALSO BURNING HALF OUR GARAGE. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY AND NOT IN MOTION AND COMPLETELY TURNED OFF.
I HAVE TO ADD COOLANT, I HAVE CHECKED WITH DEALER AND SAID PRESSURE TANK IS LEAKING, REPLACE THE TANK , STILL PROBLEM IS THERE, I TOLD THEM WHEN I TURN ON HEAT, MY EYES ARE BURNING TOO, THEY ASK ME TO REPLACE THE TANK, SO I DID, COOLANT STILL LEAK, SO DIAGNOSIS IS NOT WRIGHT. EYES BURNING WAS HAPPENING SINCE LONG TIME, BUT I NOTICE IN DECEMBER, I WAS GOING TO EYE DOCTOR,
ENGINE FAILED BECAUSE THE CRANKSHAFT GOT SO HOT IT FUSED THE CRANKSHAFT AND THE BEARINGS CAUSING THE COMPLETE FAILURE AND REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINE. BMW HAS HAD NUMEROUS CLAIMS OF ENGINE FAILURES IN THE X5 BUT THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE ONLY HAD 84K MILES AND THEN WITHOUT WARNING, NO OIL LEAKS, NO HOT ENGINE RED LIGHTS, NOTHING AT ALL TO SPEAK OF IN THE MIDDLE OF TRAVEL, THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUT OFF AND I HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING TO GET TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE BMW DEALERSHIP IN BAY SHORE NY HAD THE VEHICLE FOR THREE WEEKS AND REALLY DIDN'T OPEN THE ENGINE UP TO FIND THE CAUSE. AFTER BMWUSA SAID THEY WOULD DO NOTHING TO RESOLVE THEIR LATENT DEFECT IN THE ENGINE OBVIOUSLY METAL PARTS WHICH WE CAME TO THE CONCLUSION WERE INFERIOR, I HAD THE ENGINE TAKEN OUT BY A CERTIFIED TRAINED A MECHANIC. HE STATED HE HAS NEVER SEE A MELTDOWN OF PARTS WHICH WELDED TOGETHER FROM THE EXTREME HEAT OF THE ENGINE. NO LEAK WERE DETECTED FOR EITHER COOLANT OR OIL YET THE ENGINE SEIZED SIMPLY FOR THE FACT, THE METAL USED INTERNALLY IS INFERIOR. FOR THE PRICE YOU PAID FOR THE "ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE", BMWUSA NEEDS TO STEP UP AND BE HONEST ABOVE THE PROBLEMS THAT HAVE PLAGUED THEIR ENGINES AND THEIR COOLING SYSTEM. I HAVE SPEND OVER $15,000 TO GET THIS VEHICLE REPAIRED AND BMWUSA SHOULD REIMBURSE ME BECAUSE OF IT'S KNOWN HISTORY. I HAVE OWNED BMWS SINCE 1992 AND THE VEHICLES LASTED PASSED 175K MILES. TO HAVE A MAJOR ENGINE FAIL AT 84K SPEAKS VOLUMES TO THE LACK OF INTEGRITY FOR THE ENGINE. BMW IS USING STEEL AND METAL THAT HAVE SIGNIFICANT STRENGTH PROBLEMS AS DOCUMENTED BY ALL THE COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ ABOVE. TO HAVE THE ENGINE SEIZED LIKE THIS IS THE MIDDLE OF TRAFFIC ENDANGERED ME AND MY PASSENGERS AND TOTALLY UNCONSCIONABLE.*DT*AS
SPURIOUS "PASSENGER NOT WEARING SEATBELT" ALERT WHEN THERE IS NO PASSENGER. DIAGNOSED AS "PASSENGER SEAT MAT SENSOR FAULTY" WITH A REPLACEMENT COST OF $2,498.87. SHOULD BE COVERED BY A RECALL AS THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. APPARENTLY SIMILAR ISSUE LED TO A RECALL IN OLDER BMW VEHICLES.
PASSENGER SEAT SENSOR FOR AIRBAG HAS FAILED. WAS TOLD NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR ANY RECALL, ESTIMATE OF $2,200. WAS TOLD THAT SAFETY SYSTEM IS NOW COMPROMISED FOR PASSENGER.
PASSENGER SEAT - SEAT/AIRBAG OCCUPANCY SENSOR FAILED. THE AIRBAG AND SEATBELT LIGHT REMAINS LIT. BMW SAID NOT COVERED UNDER ANY WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE. ESTIMATED COST TO REPAIR - $3,000. APPARENTLY AIRBAG AND SEATBELT WILL NOT ENGAGE IF SENSOR IS NOT WORKING
Car was purchased in July of 2017. Extended warranty was purchased. Dealership says they do not have that in their records. A letter was sent to our address regarding extended coverage, but had another person's name on it. Regardless, the engine developed excessive oil leaks, and led to complete engine failure. Dealer says it would be several thousand dollars to look at it. Research indicates that this model vehicle had excessive oil leaks, but we were not apprised of this, or any of the recalls when purchased. Also, the seals were not holding oil. Dealer sold the car without disclosing of any of these defects. Further, I believe there may have been a recall on the engine, but BMW tells us that this engine is not in the recall. Additional research conforms that this is a standard practice for BMW. I can be reached any time at [XXX], or [XXX]. TL* THE CONTACTS WIFE OWNS A 2013 BMW X5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH, A LOUD CLUNKING NOISE WAS HEARD COMING FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND DISCOVERED OIL WAS EMERGING FROM UNDER THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC, THEY DETERMINED THAT THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT BOLTS FAILED AND THE OIL TANK WAS PUNCTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. A DEALER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,971.
THE CARE WAS OFF OVERNIGHT IN THE GARAGE UNLOCKED. IN THE AM, IN THE GARAGE, THERE WAS A SMELL OF BURNT ELECTRONICS. NOTICED SOMETHING ON THE BEHIND THE DRIVER'S DOOR HANDLE AND THE SAME THING DRIPPED DOWN THE DOOR AND SOME ON THE FLOOR. LOOKING CLOSER AT IT, IT APPEARS THAT SOMETHING OVERHEATED IN THE DOOR HANDLE AND MELTED A HOLE IN THE BACKSIDE OF THE HANDLE WHICH CAUSED SOME MELTED MATERIAL, PLASTIC OR RUBBER TO SPRAY ON THE DOOR PANEL AND DRIP DOWN THE DOOR. I CHECKED THE FUSE THAT CORRESPONDS TO THE DOOR HANDLE, SPECIFICALLY THE COMFORT ACCESS FEATURE AND FOUND THE FUSE TO BE BLOWN. THIS ALL HAPPENED OVERNIGHT WITH THE CAR NOT RUNNING OR OTHERWISE OCCUPIED. I AM CONCERNED THAT THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A FIRE AND SUSPECT THAT THE FUSE DOING IT'S JOB PREVENTED A FIRE FROM OCCURING.
MY X-5 STARTED PRODUCING SMOKE FROM UNDER THE HOOD WHILE DRIVING AND WHILE STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT. WHEN I REACHED HOME, I DIDN'T SEE THE SMOKE ANYMORE, BUT IT SMELLED LIKE SOMETHING WAS BURNING. A FEW DAYS LATER, THE OIL AT MINIMAL LEVEL WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK MY TRUCK INTO THE GALLERIA BMW DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VALVE GASKET COVER WAS BROKEN AND THAT OIL WAS LEAKING OUT, CAUSINGTHE BURNING SMELL. MY LAST OIL CHANGE SERVICE WAS LESS THAN 6 MONTHS PRIOR TO HAVING THIS ISSUE, AT THE SAME DEALERSHIP. THE SERVICE REP, STATED THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE WITH OTHER OLDER MODEL BMWS AND MY TRUCK BEING A 2013 WAS OLD AND ALSO SUSCEPTIBLE TO HAVING THIS SAME PROBLEM. I THINK THIS IS AN EXTREME SAFETY ISSUE WITH BMWS, AND IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED ASAP!
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 BMW X5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 75 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD A LOUD BANG AND NOTICED THAT THE DRIVESHAFT DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MERGE TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TOWED TO A DEALER (UNKNOWN DEALER INFORMATION). IT WAS UNKNOWN IF THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED OR DIAGNOSED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2013 BMW X5. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO TOM BUSH BMW JACKSONVILLE (9875 ATLANTIC BLVD, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32225, (904) 371-4790) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, SWIRL FLAP, AND AIR COOLER NEEDED TO BE REPLACED; HOWEVER, THE CONTACT DECLINED THE REPAIRS. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND DID NOT ASSIST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
WHEN WE ACCELERATE, THE VEHICLE SHUDDERS/HESITATES TO THE POINT WHERE IT FEELS INCREDIBLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE. WHEN WE TOOK THE X5 TO THE MECHANIC, THE MECHANIC SAID THAT IT WAS ODD THAT THERE WOULD BE A TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM AT SUCH LOW MILEAGE ON THE X5, WHICH WAS AT 67000 MILES AT THE TIME. WHEN I RESEARCHED ONLINE IF THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR OUR MAKE/MODEL, I LEARNED THAT THERE WERE MANY OTHER OWNERS WHO EXPERIENCED THE SAME KIND OF PROBLEM -- MANY, IN FACT, DEMANDED THAT BMW OR THE NHTSA RECALL THE VEHICLE FOR THIS PROBLEM (HTTP://WWW.CARPROBLEMZOO.COM/BMW/X5/TRANSFER-CASE-PROBLEMS.PHP). I, ALONG WITH OTHER OWNERS FOR THIS MAKE/MODEL, BELIEVE THAT THIS TRANSFER CASE PROBLEM IS SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO WARRANT A RECALL AS THE VEHICLE FEELS VERY UNSAFE TO DRIVE.
