MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT SMELLS VERY STRONGLY OF GAS. IT HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. *TR
ON 9/13/2012 MY NIECE WAS DRIVING HER 2006 CHEVY COBALT. IT WAS A CLEAR NIGHT WITH LIGHT TRAFFIC. ALL OF A SUDDEN HER CAR VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. SHE DIED OF BLUNT FORCE TRAUMA TO THE HEAD. THERE WERE NO BRAKE MARKS AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY WHICH YOU WOULD HAVE EXPECTED WITH SUCH A VIOLENT COLLISION. *TR
THE PLASTIC SUPPLY AND RETURN PORT ON THE MODULAR RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY IS CRACK, CAUSING FUEL TO LEAK. THIS IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS CURRENT NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID 09V419000. HOWEVER, GM TOLD ME THAT MY VIN IS NO COVERED UNDER THIS RECALL. THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXTENDED TO THE REST OF THE COUNTRY, INSTEAD JUST CERTAIN STATES. LUCKILY, I CAUGHT THIS ISSUE BEFORE A CAR FIRE OCCURRED. *TR
MY CAR STARTED TO SMELL LIKE GASOLINE. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE FUEL CAP, BUT WHEN I HAD SOME REPAIRS DONE THAT WERE UNRELATED TO THE FUEL SYSTEM, THE MECHANIC NOTICED FUEL LEAKING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP HOUSING BY A SMALL FITTING. THE PLASTIC FITTING HAD CRACKED WHERE THE HOSE ATTACHED TO THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP. I TOOK THE BROKEN PUMP TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND WAS TOLD THAT MY VIN WAS NOT COVERED BY THE RECALL. HOWEVER, THEY DID INFORM ME THAT IF I STILL HAD LESS THAN 160,000 MILES, THEY WOULD HAVE REPLACED IT. I THINK THIS IS UNSAFE REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT OF MILES A CAR HAS. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THERE COULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS FUEL FUMES WERE EMITTED INTO THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE FUEL MODULE CRACKED AND CAUSED THE FUEL TO LEAK. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 129,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER FOR REPAIR BUT AFTER CONTACTING THE MANUFACTURER HE WAS INFORMED HIS MILEAGE WAS TOO HIGH AND THE RECALL WOULD NOT BE HONORED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 214,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET COBALT. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE KEY BECAME STUCK IN THE IGNITION. IN ADDITION, THE GEAR SHIFTER COULD NOT BE SHIFTED OUT FROM PARK. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 103,000. THE VIN WAS UNAVAILABLE.
STARTED SMELLING AN ODOR OF GAS, VERY STRONG. STARTED MAKING ME NAUSEATED AND GAVE ME A HEADACHE. BY THE TIME I MADE IT HOME I NOTICE THAT MY CAR USED A LOT OF GAS. MY BROTHER LOOKED AT IT AND SAYS THE GAS IS LEAKING AND IT IS ON TOP OF THE GAS TANK. *TR

THERE WAS A RECALL UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 09V419000 (FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP) THAT MAY HAVE BEEN RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 95,000.

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC. THE TECHNICIAN REPLACED THAT THE R&R SOLENOID KEY RELEASE, SOLENOID KEY LOCK AND SHIFTER ASSEMBLY. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN RECALL NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V04700 (AIR BAGS, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) AND NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V171000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 64,927.
THE THROTTLE BODY BECOMES EXTREMELY 'GUNKED UP,' CAUSING THE ENGINE TO SHUT OFF IF THE RPMS DROP TOO FAST. IT HAPPENS MOST OFTEN WHEN COMING UP TO STOP LIGHTS. HOWEVER, THE MOST DANGEROUS TIME (WHICH CAUSED ME TO GET REAR ENDED DUE TO NOT BEING ABLE TO IMMEDIATELY SPEED UP) IS WHEN I SWITCH LANES ON THE HIGHWAY. I LET MY CAR SLOW DOWN BY REMOVING MY FOOT FROM THE PEDAL, SWITCH LANES, AND WHEN I PUT MY FOOT ON THE PEDAL, I DON'T SPEED UP. WHY?? BECAUSE THE ENGINE SHUT OFF WHEN I FIRST REMOVED MY FOOT FROM THE PEDAL AND LET THE RPMS DROP! *TR
SINCE THIS VEHICLE REACHED 60000MI I HAVE REPLACED THE CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS TWICE. WHEN THESE BUSHINGS GO BAD THEY CAUSE STEERING ISSUES, BRAKING ISSUES AND HANDLING ISSUES. THESE BUSHINGS ARE POORLY ENGINEERED AND I THINK THAT ALL VEHICLES WITH THIS CONTROL ARM DESIGN SHOULD BE COVERED UNDER A RECALL. I HAVE A 2006 CHEVY HHR WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. THESE BUSHINGS ARE MOUNTED HORIZONTALLY AND ARE SUPPOSED TO FLEX HORIZONTALLY WITH A VERTICAL BOLT THROUGH THEM. IMPOSSIBLE TO DO EFFICIENTLY. I WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED BY ANY NUMBER OF ACCIDENTS THAT COULD BE STEMMED FROM THIS. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING WHERE THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE FUEL PUMP WAS LEAKING FUEL. CAR EMITS STRONG GAS AND FUEL ODOR WHILE DRIVING AS WELL AS PARKED. HAS BEEN CONFIRMED TO HAVE A GAS LEAK FROM DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP THAT DEALERSHIPS ARE REFUSING TO HONOR IN A RECALL ON SIMILAR YEAR MAKE AND MODEL VEHICLES. DEALERSHIPS ARE AWARE OF SITUATION ON OTHER COBALTS. *TR
I NOTICED THE CAR EMITTING A GAS SMELL WHICH CONSISTENTLY GOT WORSE OVER THE WEEK. I TOOK IT IN TO HAVE IT CHECKED AND DISCOVERED THAT THE ENTIRE FUEL PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE PART OF IT WAS LEAKING GAS. THE MECHANIC EXPLAINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP IS ABOVE THE GAS TANK, AND THEY HAD TO TAKE IT ALL APART TO EVEN LOOK AT IT. I DISCOVERED THAT A RECALL WAS IN PLACE (GM RECALL NO. 090226), BUT ONLY IN CERTAIN STATES (NOT MINE). I'M NO MECHANIC, BUT THE ACTUAL MECHANIC SAID THAT THE RECALL DESCRIPTION MATCHED THE PROBLEM THIS CAR IS FACING. HE ALSO MENTIONED THAT BECAUSE HE HAD TO TAKE IT ALL APART THIS PROBLEM WAS PROBABLY NOT FROM EVERYDAY WEAR AND TEAR. I HADN'T NOTICED ANY LEAKS UNTIL AFTER I GOT IT CHECKED, AND NOW IT IS LEAKING ALL OVER THE PLACE. I AM CURIOUS AS TO WHY THE RECALL IS ONLY IN CERTAIN STATES. IS THE WEATHER A FACTOR? DID ONLY CERTAIN CARS GET THIS FAULTY PART? IF IT IS KNOWN THAT THE PART IS SUBPAR, LET'S GET ALL STATES ON BOARD. *TR
NHTSA, I'M RESPONDING TO AN ARTICLE THAT I READ ON CNN REGARDING FUEL PUMP PRESSURE LINE FOR 2007 CHEVY COBALT. MY VEHICLE IS A 2006 CHEVY COBALT THAT ON 08/28/2012 HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP PRESSURE LINE THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING RECALLED BY GMC FOR 2007 TO 2009 CHEVY COBALT. I WOULD LIKE FOR THE 2006 CHEVY COBALT BE PLACED ON RECALL LIST SO I CAN BE REFUNDED THE 695 DOLLARS I HAD TO PAY FOR MY FUEL PUMP PRESSURE LINE TO BE REPLACED. I' M SURE THERE ARE MORE 2006 CHEVY COBALT OWNERS THAT HAVE EXPERIENCE THE SAME FUEL PUMP PROBLEM. *TR

DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 65 MPH MY FUEL GAUGE CRASHED. DROPPING TO EMPTY FROM HALF FULL AND STOPPING MY VEHICLE IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO CHECK THE ENGINE FOR FUEL. NOTHING FOUND. GOT ON MY HANDS AND KNEES AND CHECKED UNDER THE CAR TO FIND FUEL SHOWERING OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF MY FUEL TANK. I CALLED MY LOCAL CHEVROLET AND GAVE THEM MY VIN NUMBER ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT YES THERE IS A RECALL IN EFFECT FOR THIS PROBLEM BUT ITS ONLY AVAILABLE TO BE FIXED FOR FREE IN 2 STATES. ARIZONA AND NEVADA. *TR
WE NOTICED A STRONG FUEL ODOR COMING FROM THE CAR. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION WE DISCOVERED A PUDDLE OF FUEL UNDER THE CAR. WE RESEARCHED RECALLS AND OF COURSE WE WERE TOLD THEY WERE FOR CERTAIN STATES. WE CONTACTED GM AND WAS ABLE TO GET THEM TO PAY TO HAVE THE VEHICLE LOOKED AT TO SEE WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS DUE TO IT BEING A SAFETY ISSUE! DEALER FOUND THE METAL LINES PART OF THE FUEL PUMP MODULE ARE LEAKING FUEL. IT WAS NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP MODULE. OUR DEALER OFFERED TO PAY 50% OF THE COST. WE STILL HAVE AN OPEN INVESTIGATION WITH GM TO SEE IF THEY WILL BE COVERING THE COST OF THE REPAIR AND REFUND US OUR MONEY. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE. IT IS A DEFECTIVE PART! NO WAY SHOULD A CAR WITH LESS THAN 41,000 MILES SHOULD HAVE A FUEL LEAK. JUST HOPE YOU DECIDE TO RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT OR DIES!! *TR
WHILE DRIVING MY 2006 CHEVY COBALT WHEN I LOST POWER STEERING WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO CONTROL MY CAR AROUND SHARP TURNS DUE TO THE FACT THAT I WAS NOT EXPECTING THE POWER STEERING TO JUST GO OUT ON ME LIKE THAT. THIS TYPE OF PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAPPENS WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE ALREADY HAD MY POWER STEERING FIXED ONCE DUE TO A PAST RECALL AND HERE I AM AGAIN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SAME THING AGAIN! *TR

THE PLASTIC SUPPLY ON THE MODULAR RESERVOIR ASSEMBLY HAS CRACKED ON MY 2006 COBALT. FUEL IS LEAKING FROM THE AREA. THE CRACK IS CAUSING GAS TO LEAK TO THE GROUND. MY MECHANIC HAS SAID THIS COULD LEAD TO MY VEHICLE CATCHING ON FIRE. IT APPEARS THAT COBALTS IN OTHER AREAS OF THE COUNTRY HAVE BEEN RECALLED FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. I'M WONDERING WHY ALL COBALTS HAVE NOT BEEN RECALLED AS I HAVE HEARD/SEEN MANY OTHER '06 COBALT OWNERS IN OTHERS STATES ARE HAVING THE SAME ISSUES. *TR

I STARTED NOTICING A SMELL OF FUEL FROM MY VEHICLE BUT DID NOT SEE A LEAK. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC WHO NOTICED A LEAK, THEY WERE THEN ABLE TO VERIFY THAT THE PLASTIC FUEL LINE PIECE WAS BROKEN WHICH MEANS THE FUEL PUMP NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. I WENT ONLINE AND NOTICED A RECALL ON THE 2006 CHEVY COBALT BECAUSE OF FUEL PUMP ISSUES. IN A GM RECALL BULLETIN I LOCATED ONLINE DATED JAN. 2010 BULLETIN # 09226, STATED THAT THE VEHICLES AFFECTED HAD VIN # WITH THE LAST 8 DIGITS BETWEEN 67600011 AND 67887442. MY VEHICLE'S VIN NUMBER FALLS BETWEEN THOSE TWO NUMBERS BUT ACCORDING TO A CHEVROLET CUSTOMER SERVICE AGENT, WHO ACKNOWLEDGED THE RECALL ON THE FAULTY PART, MY VIN # IS NOT VALID FOR THE RECALL. I TOOK IT TO MY LOCAL MECHANIC TO GET FIXED BECAUSE IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE IF NOTHING ELSE. I AM WRITING YOU BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT CHEVROLET SHOULD BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR ESPECIALLY BECAUSE THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE FUEL PUMPS ON THE 2006 CHEVROLET COBALTS. I NOTICED THAT MY CAR, INSIDE AND OUT, HAD A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL. SINCE MY DAUGHTER DRIVES THE CAR I IMMEDIATELY TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC. I WAS TOLD THERE IS A RECALL ON 2006 COBALTS FOR THIS ISSUE. HOWEVER SINCE I'M NOT IN A SOUTHERN STATE, WITH HIGH TEMPERATURES, MY CAR IS NOT COVERED. THIS MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE TO ME SINCE MARYLAND HAS BEEN EXTREMELY HOT ALL SUMMER. THE VIN NUMBER FOR MY CAR MATCHES THE RECALL NOTICE JUST NOT THE STATE. I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO FIND THE MONEY FOR REPAIR SINCE MY CHILD'S SAFETY IS AT RISK. I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY IN NORTH CAROLINA ON VACATION AT 65-70 MPH WHEN THE IGNITION KICKED OFF LUCKILY I ACTED QUICKLY AND RESTARTED THE CAR THERE HAVE BEEN A FEW OTHER INSTANCES WHEN THE IGNITION HAS JUST SHUT OFF WITH OUT WARNING. MY CAR STARTED SMELLING LIKE GASOLINE, AND I COULDN'T FIGURE OUT WHY. THE SMELL WAS INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CAR. THIS DIDN'T START TILL THE TEMPERATURE HERE IN VA WAS OVER 100 DEGREES. I WAS TOLD COULD OF BEEN THAT MY GAS CAP WAS NOT VENTING PROPERLY. THE GAS SMELL BECAME SO INTENSE OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE CAR EVEN AFTER I REPLACED THE GAS CAP. I HAVE RECEIVED PRICES OF 650.00 TO OVER 1000.00 TO HAVE THE DEFECTIVE FUEL PUMP REPLACED (ALL ONE UNIT) ACCORDING TO THE REPAIR SHOPS. LUCKILY WE CAUGHT THE PROBLEM EARLY AND FUEL HAD NOT BEEN LEAKING REALLY BAD AND WE HAD THE PROBLEM FIXED. DUE TO THE NEWEST RECALLS ON THE COBALT I DECIDED TO LOOK INTO PREVIOUS RECALLS ON THE CAR AND SAW THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM IN 2009 ON THE COBALT BUT ONLY FOR CARS REGISTERED/BOUGHT IN 5 STATES(ILLINOIS NOT BEING ONE). WE FIND THAT TO BE EXTREMELY UNACCEPTABLE AND DANGEROUS. ALL THE COBALT MODEL YEARS HAVE A RECALL ON A FAULTY FUEL PUMP PROBLEM BUT ONLY FOR CARS BOUGHT AND REGISTERED IN 5 STATES THAT'S JUST CRAZY. THERE HAS BEEN RECALLS ON THE CHEVY COBALT IN OTHER STATES FOR THE FUEL PUMP. DUE TO HEAT THE FUEL PUMP CRACKS AND LEAKS FUEL WHICH COULD CAUSE FIRE OR EXPLOSION. WE LIVE IN WEST VIRGINIA AND HAVE HAD HIGH TEMPERATURES AND OUR CARS FUEL PUMP CRACKED CAUSING CAR TO STALL AND GAS LEAKING AROUND AREA. BECAUSE WE DON'T LIVE IN ONE OF THE STATES THAT IT WAS RECALLED IN THEY WILL NOT FIX OUR CAR. IT IS A DEFECTIVE PART THAT CAN CAUSE INJURY OR DEATH AND TO MY UNDERSTANDING THE ONES THEY RECALL THEY FIX WITH THE SAME PLASTIC THAT WILL CRACK AGAIN.
