NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V165000 (Visibility) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the windshield wipers failed to operate as needed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the windshield wiper module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000. VIN tool confirms parts not available.
On October 3rd 2021 I had changed the oil on my car as normal maintenance. On October 30th I had the oil checked again as preventative maintenance since my war was acting up. On November 1, 2021 My car would not start. After examination by my mechanic. He started the the engine was not working anymore. I had replaced the timing chain and silonoids replaced on the engine within one year prior to the engine being inoperable. There needs to be a recall on this engine. I almost ended up in a major auto accident when it stalled out and died.
driving in a rain storm wipers just quit back worked front wipers quit.
Steering wheel was vibrating as well as car. Thought I needed an alignment. Mechanic pointed out it was my tires. Said side wall was about to split open. Bulge in tires
My steering wheel was vibrating as well as my car. I thought i needed an alignment. Mechanic said it was my tire. There is a bulge in the side wall and tire is about to split. Tire size 225/65R17 DTR1DEX
While driving the vehicle at about 30 miles an hour it stalled. Engine just shut off, but restarted. Then at the next stop light it stalled out again, but restarted. I was about 2 miles from a place I could pull over, when I did pull over, the car would not start again. Had to have it towed to a repair shop, where I was told that I needed a whole new engine. The check engine light never came on, in fact no lights every came on to indicate an issue of any kind. I got my oil changes regularly. This is not safe vehicle. Two different repair shops have looked at the vehicle. Both are in agreement that there is no compression left in the engine. Both repair shops have told me that they have repaired at least 8-15 Chevy's with this same issue. After investigating this issue, it seems to be KNOWN one. Not sure why Chevy isn't standing by their product.
Windshield wipers stopped working while driving. Read online that this happens to a lot of Equinox’s.
2014 Chevy Equinox- Consumer is requesting reimbursement for parts and repair in connection to the Safety Recall # N212352530. Recall letter and repair & parts invoice attached.
In summer of 2021, the car was making a noise when driving, then it started lurching forward when stopped at a light or stop sign with foot on pedal. Took it to dealer and they said the timing belt needed to be replaced, which I had them replace. A few months later, same thing was happening so I took it back and was told that the problem now was that the engine was burning oil and I needed to check the oil every 1000 miles. I have since driven it less than 4000 miles and have had to put 3 quarts of oil in car. I understand that GM issued letters to 2013 Equinox owners about this problem but not 2014 owners. Based on reading the complaints in this website, I think its safe to say that its a problem with the 2014 models as well.
My 2014 Equinox is going through engine oil so frequently. I have to put at least a quart in every time I fuel up. My oil light that indicates when I am low on oil never comes on. It never warns me that I am low and I first figured it out after my engine started to make a clicking noise when I had my engine oil changed only 3 weeks before that and I had no oil left in my vehicles engine. It does not leak the oil as I never have a puddle under my car. It does not burn it out the exhaust. This is a huge issue and safety concern as it can potentially damage my engine causing more money worth of damage than the vehicle itself is worth and leaving me stranded on the side of the road and without a vehicle is not okay, especially with children potentially being stranded. If my car were to break down due to this issue then I am a sitting duck on the side of the Highway/freeway for other cars to potentially hit me.
Driving west on I-40 near Knoxville, TN during a heavy rain shower & windshield wipers stopped working. I was in the left lane, no shoulder to pull into. I put on my hazard lights & was able to get across the two lanes of traffic, visibility lousy, & pull onto the right shoulder to wait out the shower. Onstar provided the location & directions to the nearest Advanced Auto. Wipers couldn't be fixed, fuse & relay were good. Luckily the store manages suggested RainX & helped apply it. I continued my trip home to Chesapeake, Virginia & ran into rain again around Yorktown. Tense driving from then on. Took car to repair shop appointment on Thursday, 8/5, & they said the transmission of the wiper assembly was bad. $466.53 to fix. There is a recall for wipers on the 2013 & 2015 Equinox, why not expand it to include 2014? Original GM dealership where I bought the car is no longer in business so had to go to an independent repair shop. Unable to resize receipt & attach.
While I was driving in heavy rain my windshield wipers popped and stopped working, later I found that the windshield wiper motor had fail. I've never had this happen to any vehicle I've owned.
The Contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated while driving in inclement weather at approximately 50-55 mph, the windshield wipers failed to perform as designed. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have a diagnostic test performed. The contact was informed that the windshield wiper motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. the manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 129,000.
My engine light has come on twice. The car feel like it wants to shut off. When I turn the car off it shakes.
It was pouring down rain and I was driving 70 mph on the 4 lane & the next thing I knew the windshield wiper blades went all the way over on the driver's side. Freaked me out. Finally got pulled over on a safe area.My husband got out & checked the windshield wipers they will move manually but not if you turn them on from in the car. This is terrible and actually can be DEADLY.
2014 Chevy Equinox 2LT Sunday afternoon: Driving down rd w heavy traffic AND construction zone with my 11yr old and her BFF. All of a sudden tropical storm unleashed HEAVY rain. I turn on wipers and within a few minutes BOOM...wipers hyperextend and stop working. I cannot see 2 ft in front of me w 2 children in car. Long story short, I was lucky and did NOT KILL OR INJURE anyone. I pull over and can hear wiper motor is running so I turn off and reposition wipers on windshield (my driver side wiper was extended beyond windshield and passenger was half across driver side). Turn on wipers and NOTHING...NO WIPERS but continue to hear wiper motor. I begin searching online and see this is a KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE and I had NOT been notified. I contacted the dealership Monday morning as soon as they open. 4 Dealerships cannot service KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE for 7 calendar days and im told not a recall on my VIN. I contact GM and was informed this is a KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE. Chevy Equinox Owners SHOULD HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED BY MAIL DECEMBER 2019!!!! I asked why I had NOT been notified and GM REP states its the DMV responsibility and I needed to update my info w DMV. I informed rep same address since 2006 and received all registrations via mail at the address since I purchased vehicle. I am MORTIFIED I and all others are NOT being notified. I was lucky and everyone safe. However, what if we were not so lucky? Please any/all search : N192266180 Front Wiper Transmission Arm Linkage Failure. This is PDF that I received via live chat w GM. Please read in its entirety. Problem must be confirmed by Diagnostic testing or else will NOT be covered. Just left dealership with repairs made free of charge. However, thats another hassle as they attempted to blow me off. Per attorney, I had taken my vehicle to 2 private owned mechanics and had diagnostic reports in hand. GM DELAYED MY REPAIRS FOR 10 DAYS KNOWING IT IS A CONFIRMED SAFETY HAZARD. MEMO is marked URGENT Distribute IMMEDIATELY on 12/17/19
While operating 2014 Chevy Equinox owned by my wife's deceased father and now owned by his widow and my wife's mother, while approaching a stop light in the rain with the wipers on high do to the rain volume, The wipers suddenly stopped functioning and never started again. Fortunately my spouse was able to get it of the road safely and remained stranded for about an hour until the rain subsided. She was traveling with her 75 year old mother ( Owner of the vehicle mentioned) whom isn't in the greatest of health and two small children. Had she been traveling on the interstate even at a reduced speed to match the condition, all could have been catastrophic and we would be talking at this point through my lawyer. After researching several forums, this seems to be a systemic issue and yet there still is not a recall to hold the auto manufacture accountable for this problem. Although they have recognized it in the 2013 models. How many people have to die before action is taken?
anti steering fluid leaking
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph in the rain with the front windshield wipers activated, the driver’s and passenger’s side wipers suddenly stopped operating causing a visibility hazard to the driver. After stopping to examine the vehicle, the windshield wiper motor could be heard operating although the wiper blades were inoperable. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 117,000. The VIN was not available. Consumer stated dealer covered the linkage arm break under their warranty coverage.

My 2014 equinox is burning oil to the extent of 7 or more quarts a week. My specific vin isn’t covered in the Plugged PCV Orifice in Intake Manifold recall. I am filing a complaint as this is a safety issue and is a recall on same models and years with different vins.

ENGINES ARE BURNING TO MUCH OIL CAUSING THE ENGINE TO NEED TO BE REPLACED
WIPERS FAILED DURING A RAINSTORM CAUSING VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE ON MAJOR HIGHWAY. LOST COMPLETE VISIBILITY.
WHILE DRIVING 52 MPH, SUDDENLY THE CAR STARTED ACCELERATING ON IT'S OWN, QUICKLY. IT DID STOP WHEN I HIT BRAKES.
VEHICLE HAS 55000 MILES AND CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON. IN SCANNING THE CAR I WAS TOLD THAT P0010 THE INTAKE POSITIONS ACTUATOR CIRCUIT AND P0013 EXHAUST CAMSHAFT POSITION ACTUATOR CIRCUIT NEEDED TO BE SERVICED TO THE TUNE OF BETWEEN 1200.00 AND 1500.00 DOLLARS WHICH IS NORMAL FOR THESE CARS I. THINK THIS IS BS I HAVE OIL CHANGED EVERY 2000 MILES OR 3 MONTHS WITH CASTROL DEXOS 5W30 AND LUCAS OIL STABILIZER. SOUNDS LIKE THIS SHOULD BE COVERED BY YHE MANUFACTURER.
I STAR HEARING AS QUICK NOISE IN THE ENGINE AND AFTER A DAY THE ENGEEN IS NO LONGER GOOD ,I I'M PAYING A MECHANIC TO REPLACE ENGINE
MY CAR HAS THE SAME PROBLEM AS BULLETIN 14882 STATES. ON A DAY IT WAS 0 DEGREES MY CAR STARTED SMOKING AND THE ENGINE STARTED RATTLING. I PULLED OFF THE HIGHWAY AND SAW OIL COMING OUT BETWEEN THE MOTOR AND TRANSMISSION. BULLETIN 14882 STATES THAT 2010 THRU 2014 EQUINOX CARS WITH THE 2.4 ECOTEC HAVE THIS PROBLEM DUE TO FROZEN PCV VALVE AND THE MOTOR BUILDING UP PRESSURE BLOWING OUT THE REAR MAIN SEAL. MY CAR HAS 80,000 MILES ON IT. THE BULLETIN STATES THAT CARS UNDER 10 YERS OLD OR UNDER 120,000 MILES IS TO BE COVERED. CHEVEROLET SAYS MY VIN IS NOT IN THIS RECALL. I WAS ON THE HIGHWAY 10 MINUTES AFTER LEAVING MY HOUSE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. THE CAR IS NOT ABLE TO BE DRIVEN AND HAD TO BE TOWED.
WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE, STARTED HEARING KNOCKING SOUND AND WITHIN MINUTES A LOUD BANG AND THE CAR CAME TO A HALT. GOT OUT AND CHECKED UNDER THE HOOD AND ALL THE OIL IN THE VEHICLE DRAINED ONTO THE GROUND.
WINDSHIELD WIPERS STOPPED DURING A REALLY BAD STORM!!!! COULD'VE RESULTED IN FATALITIES!!!! NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY THERE HASN'T BEEN A RECALL FOR ALL YEARS AFFECTED BY THIS AS I SEE THEY RECALLED YEAR 2013. THE WORSE PART IS THAT THERE WILL HAVE TO BE A FATALITY BEFORE THEY RECALL A PART THAT IS OBVIOUSLY PROBLEMATIC FOR SO MANY OTHERS!!!!!
WHILE DRIVING DOWN A RURAL ROAD IN COLD TEMPS MY ENGINE STARTED TO LEAK OIL AFTER HEARING A POP AND CAUSING MY ENGINE TO LEAK ALL THE OIL OUT OF IT
I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND THE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIGHT FLASHED, FOLLOWED BY THE OIL LIGHT AND THEN IT STARTED ALARMING, I PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND HAD MY VEHICLE TOWED. THIS HAPPENED ON ONE OF THE FRIGID CHICAGO DAYS. IT WAS DIAGNOSED PVC VALVE FROZE WHICH CAUSED VACUUM PRESSURE THAT CAUSED REAR MAIN SEAL TO HAVE MAJOR OIL LEAK. MY ENGINE WAS RUINED.
DRIVING IN INCLEMENT WEATHER ON A MAJOR US HIGHWAY(RT.93) AT 65MPH MY WIPERS SUDDENLY STOPPED WORKING FORCING ME TO NAVIGATE TO THE BREAKDOWN LANE .MY VISION WAS PRACTICALLY ZERO DUE TO THE LACK OF WIPERS
TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY THE CAR MADE A CLANGING SOUND, THEN I LOOKED AT MY DASH AND IT SAID THE MOTOR WAS SLOWING DOWN. SO II GOT TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY AND STOPPED. CALLED THE WRECKER AND WHEN IT WAS BEING PUT ON THE TRUCK WAS WHEN I SAW THE OIL UNDER IT. WHILE WAITING FOR HELP I CONTACTED THE ONSTAR SYSTEM THEY RAN A DIO FOR MY TROUBLE, BUT IT ONLY CAME BACK AS "HAVE IT SERVICES SOON". THE DEALER SAID THE PVC HAD STUCK AND BLEW THE MOTOR, IT WOULD COST 7000.00+ TO REPLACE THE MOTOR. AND WOULD NOT BUY IT AGAINST A NEW CAR PURCHASE.
The contact owned a 2014 Chevrolet equinox. The contact stated that while driving and turning into her driveway, the check engine warning light illuminated an abnormal sound was heard coming from the vehicle. The contact turned off the vehicle. The following day, the contact’s mother inspected the vehicle and noticed that there was no oil in the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the timing chain had a fracture and the engine needed to be replaced. The local dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The vehicle was not drivable. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 169,000.
ENGINE WAS BURNING OIL AT AN ALARMING RATE, WAS STARTING TO STALL WHENEVER THE VEHICLE CAME TO A STOP WHILE IN DRIVE, AND WAS LOUDER THAN NORMAL. SENT VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS INFORMED THE PVC MANIFOLD NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. WAS ALSO TOLD THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE. THE TOTAL COST WAS $812.00 WITH PARTS AND LABOR TO REPLACE. THE CAR HAS UNDER 100K MILES AND APPARENTLY GM WILL NOT COVER THE COST IN ANYWAY. WAS ALSO TOLD THIS ISSUE COULD HAVE CAUSED MY ENGINE TO BLOW IF NOT CAUGHT IN ENOUGH TIME.
I HAVE REPLACED THE BATTERY. CAR RUNS GOOD BUT EVERY FEW WEEKS THE CAR WILL NOT START EVEN AFTER I HAVE BEEN DRIVING IT DAILY. SOMETHING DRAWS ON THE BATTERY. ALWAYS AFRAID TO GO SOMEWHERE AND IT WILL ALL OF A SUDDEN NOT START. EVERYTHING ELSE ON CAR CHECKS OUT. THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT ELECTRICALLY DRAWING. I SEE MANY PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM
CHEVROLET EQUINOX HAS AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF OIL CONSUMPTION. EVERY 1,500 MILES OR LOWER IT HAS TO BE REPLACED WITH MORE OIL, AT LEAST A 1 QUART TO 2 BECAUSE IT GETS SO LOW SO FAST.
2.4L 4CYL. MOTOR RAN OUT OF OIL, NO OIL ON DIP STICK. NO LOW OIL LIGHT OR PRESSURE NOTIFICATION AND UNDER RECOMMENDED MILEAGE FOR OIL CHANGE. PCV TUBE TO AIR INTAKE FILLED WITH MILKY OIL. REFLECTS ISSUE FOR 2010-2013 MODELS. THE ISSUE WAS FOUND AFTER STALLING AT STOP LIGHT ON BUSY STATE ROAD.
THE VEHICLE WILL STALL WHENEVER STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT OR STOP SIGN AND IN DRIVE. HAVE TO PUT IT IN NEUTRAL TO KEEP RPM AT NORMAL LEVEL, OTHERWISE IT WILL GO DOWN TO 500 RPM OR SHUT OFF. VEHICLE RATTLES AND SHAKES WHEN DRIVING. CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY, REPLACED O2 SENSOR, HAD THE ENGINE REBUILT 6 MONTHS AGO BECAUSE OF A RECALL. THIS IS HIGHLY UNSAFE, UNRELIABLE AND ABSOLUTELY NOT OK FOR A CAR WITH 87,000 MILES. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL BECAUSE IT IS OBVIOUS FROM READING THROUGH DIFFERENT FORUMS ON THE INTERNET THAT A LOT OF OTHER PEOPLE HAVE THE SAME EXACT ISSUE AT DIFFERENT MILEAGES.
SAME PROBLEM AS BULLETIN 14882 DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY NO WARNING LIGHT ENGINE STARTED RATTLING CAR SMOKE LOST POWER CAR DIED OIL EVERYWHERE PCV VALVE FROZE DUE TO EXCESSION ENGINE OIL BURNING AND BLEW THE ENGINE $2300 DOLLARS LATER SUPPOSEDLY FIXED MY CAR HAS NOT BEEN RT SINCE FILED COMPLAINT WITH CHEVY I WAS TOLD MY VIN NOT NOT PART OF THE SERVICE BULLETIN I HAVE READ THE SAME ISSSUE OVER AND OVER I CAR IS BACK IN THE SHOP TODAY 3.24.21 STILL HAVING ISSUES WILL NEVER BUY CHEVY AGAIN
2014 MODEL YEAR CHEVY EQUINOX. MY CAR WAS PRODUCED IN 9-2013, AND HAS HAD CONTINUOUS HIGH OIL CONSUMPTION SINCE PURCHASE. EVERY FEW WEEKS IT IS MAKING A LOUD NOISE AFTER START UP, AND I AM HAVING TO ADD OIL (3 QTS YESTERDAY OF THE 5W-30 DEXRON OIL AS LISTED ON THE CAP).
WHILE DRIVING DURING A RAIN/SNOW EVENT, THE DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER STOPPED WORKING. THE DRIVER SIDE WIPER WAS SUSPENDED WHILE THE PASSENGER SIDE CONTINUED TO MOVE. AS VISIBILITY DECREASED MY 17-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER HAD TO PULL OVER AND CALL FOR ASSISTANCE. SHE COULD NO LONGER SEE OUT THE DRIVER SIDE WINDSHIELD.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the rear main seal had blown on three separate occasions. The failure occurred each time at start-up. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and the rear main seal was replaced twice, however, on the third failure there were additional damages done to the vehicle, and the contact was informed that the engine and transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was unknown.
PCV VALVE FAILED; ALLOWED PRESSURE BUILD UP IN CRANK CASE WHICH THEN BLEW THE REAR MAIN SEAL. $1,600 BILL FOR THIS. A LOOK ONLINE SHOWS THIS HAPPENS REPEATEDLY ON THIS VEHICLE, BUT NO RECALL ISSUED BY MANUFACTURER AND NO COMPENSATION FOR THE REPAIRS
DRIVING ON FREEWAY IN POURING RAIN IN THE DARK. WHEN WIPERS STOPED MID STROKE. THIS HAPPENED TODAY 12/16/2020. I PULLED THE VEHICLE OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY AND HAD TO BE TOWED. I WILL DIAGNOSE LATER. LUCKILY NO ACCIDENT. NOT GOOD TO HAVE WIPERS STOP WORKING
WHEN I PURCHASED THIS CAR THIS CAR NEW I NOTICED THAT THE STEERING WAS VERY EASY TO TURN. I HAD A DISCUSSION WITH A MANAGEMENT PERSON AT THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS NOT SATISFIED. I THEN WROTE A LETTER TO YOUR PRESIDENT AND I DON'T REMEMBER GETTING A REPLY. THE PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING IS THAT IT TURNS WAY TOO EASILY AND DOES SO AT ALL SPEEDS. I HAVE ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS RUN OFF THE ROAD BECAUSE OF THE LIGHT STEERING. I DID SO AGAIN TODAY AND WAS ABLE TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING, BUT I DID HAVE A PROBLEM WITH A BUBBLE IN MY RIGHT REAR TIRE WHICH WILL TAKE ME TIME AND MONEY TO HAVE FIXED. I HAVE HAD A NUMBER OF CARS BUT NONE HAVE HAD THIS TYPE OF STEERING PROBLEM. NOW I AM AWARE THAT MOST CHEVROLET/S HAD THIS TYPE OF STEERING IN 2014 AND ALTHOUGH IT MAY NOT BE A DIRECT DESIGN PROBLEM, IT CERTAINLY MAKES THE CAR MORE DIFFICULT TO DRIVE, ESPECIALLY AT HIGH SPEEDS .I WISH THAT THE CARE WOULDN'T DO THIS, AND I KNOW IT IS A LITTLE LATE TO ASK YOU TO MAKE THE CA AS EASY TO DRIVE AS THE OTHER 59 VEHICLES THAT I HAVE OWNED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2014 CHEVROLET EQUINOX. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 30 MPH, THE CONTACT NOTICED A TRAIL OF OIL IN HER REARVIEW MIRROR. ADDITIONALLY, THERE WAS OIL ON THE DRIVEWAY PAVEMENT OF HER RESIDENCE. NO WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO SHAKOPEE CHEVROLET INC (1206 1ST AVE E, SHAKOPEE, MN 55379, (952) 955-6285) TO BE DIAGNOSED. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE PCV MANIFOLD FAILED AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE REPAIR WAS STILL PENDING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VIN WAS NOT UNDER RECALL. THE CONTACT MENTIONED MANUFACTURER COMMUNICATION NUMBER: 14882 (ENGINE) AS A POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 83,000.
