I HAVE HAD QUIT A FEW OF INCIDENTS WITH MY VEHICLE. I BOUGHT IT USED. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKS UP AND WHEN IT DOES THAT THE DASH DISPLAY SAYS POWER STEERING. I DON'T KNOW IF ITS A RECALL OR NOT BUT I FEEL LIKE IT NEEDS TO BE. A LOCAL TOWING COMPANY OWNER IS A CLOSE FRIEND AND HE HAS RECENTLY TOWED ON A HHR THAT FLIPPED BECAUSE THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED AND THE LADY GOT SCARED AND OVER CORRECTED AND FLIPPED. I BELIEVE IT NEEDS TO BE LABELED AS A RECALL. *TR
THIS IS AN ONGOING SAFETY PROBLEM THAT CHEVY/GM DOESN'T CARE TO WORRY ABOUT. MY CARS STEERING WHEEL SHAKES WHEN I AM DRIVING. SOMETIMES TO THE POINT OF THE CAR TO BE UNCONTROLLABLE IN ADDITION TO THIS THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT GOES ON ALONG WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT. I HAVE BROUGHT THIS IN TO THE DEALER EVERY TWO MONTHS AND HAVE BEEN TOLD A COMBINATION OF WHAT THE DEALERS MECHANICS FEEL THE PROBLEM IS. I HAVE HAD STEERING COLUMNS REPLACED, CAM SHAFT SOLENOIDS, BUSHINGS, ROTORS. THE LIST GOES ON. NOTHING HAS FIXED THE ISSUE. TODAY BRINGING BACK TO THE DEALER I AM NOW TOLD THAT I AM LUCKY TO BE ALIVE AS BOTH CONTROL ARMS IN THE FRONT ARE SECONDS FROM BREAKING ALONG WITH THE LINKS THAT KEEP THE CAR STABLE.. THE MECHANIC SHARED THAT HAD I HIT A POTHOLE I WOULD HAVE DIED AS THE CAR WOULD HAVE SPUN OUT OF CONTROL AND IMPOSSIBLE TO RECOVER AS I WOULD HAVE NO WAY TO CONTROL THE STEERING WHEEL. NOW HAVING TWO KIDS, AND THIS BEING AN ONGOING PROBLEM ONE WOULD THINK THAT CHEVY/GM WOULD PAY FOR THE REPLACEMENT OF THEIR FAULTY PART. I CANT AFFORD A NEW CAR, AND I CAN NO LONGER AFFORD TO PAY FOR GM'S MISTAKES. MY CAR IS PAID OFF AND NOW I DON'T FEEL SAFE DRIVING IT. TO "FIX IT" AND I SAY THIS LOOSELY IT WILL COST 1,800 OUT OF MY POCKET. *TR
I WENT TO MOVE THE CAR IN MY DRIVEWAY, WHEN I NOTICED ON ODOR OF GASOLINE. I DIDN'T OBSERVE ANY GASOLINE, AND STARTED THE CAR. IT TOOK LONGER THAN USUAL TO START, AS IF IT TOOK A WHILE FOR GASOLINE TO GET TO THE ENGINE. AFTER MOVING IT, I NOTICED GASOLINE DRIPPING FROM UNDER THE CAR, JUST IN FRONT OF THE DRIVER'S SIDE REAR TIRE. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO A CHEVROLET DEALER. THE DEALER INSPECTED THE CAR AND TOLD ME THAT THE FUEL LINES WERE CORRODED, LEAKING, AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I WAS THEN TOLD THE NEW FUEL LINES WERE ON BACK ORDER, AND IT MAY BE SEVERAL DAYS BEFORE THEY COULD GET THEM. THE CAR SAT AT THE DEALERSHIP, WAITING FOR THE PARTS. IT TOOK FOUR WEEKS. WHY WOULD THE FUEL LINES ON A 2006 AUTOMOBILE BE CORRODED? IS IT THE ALCOHOL IN GASOLINE? WHY WERE FUEL LINES ON BACK ORDER, AND TAKE FOUR WEEKS TO GET? IS GENERAL MOTORS HAVING TROUBLE KEEPING UP WITH DEMAND BECAUSE SO MANY ARE CORRODING? *TR
POWER STEERING WENT INOP WHILE DRIVING, MADE STEERING VERY HARD. COULD HAVE CAUSED AN ACCIDENT IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE TURNING. *TR
WHILE I WAS DRIVING UP A SMALL HILL I HEARD THE WARNING DINGS AND SUDDENLY THE POWER STEERING MESSAGE SHOWED UP AND I NO LONGER HAD CONTROL OF THE STEERING. I WAS ABLE TO GET OFF THE ROAD. I TURNED OFF THE CAR AND WAITED A MINUTE, TURNED IT BACK ON AND ALL WAS WELL AGAIN. AFTER RESEARCHING ON ABOUTAUTOMOBILES.COM I FIND 112 SIMILAR INCIDENTS ALL HAPPENING AT THE 70-80,000 MILE MARK. MY CONCERN IS THAT THERE SHOULD BE A WARNING TO ALL USED CAR HHR PURCHASES. IF THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT ON THE HAIRPIN TURNS IN MY COMMUNITY YOU ARE AS GOOD AS DEAD AT ALMOST ANY SPEED. PLUS THERE WOULD BE NO PROOF IT WAS THE STEERING BECAUSE IT CORRECTS ITSELF AFTER THE CAR IS TURNED OFF. IT WOULD APPEAR AS A "LOST CONTROL" INCIDENT ONLY. I WILL BE TAKING MY CAR TO THE GM DEALER IN SULLIVAN MO (WEST BROTHERS) ASAP FOR SERVICING. *TR
I WAS TRAVELING DOWN TYRONE BLVD. IN SAINT PETERSBURG FLORIDA...AS I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION OF TYRONE AND 9TH ATTEMPTING A LEFT HAND TURN, THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. THE POWER STEERING FAILED AND I CAME WITH IN INCHES OF HITTING A POWER POLE. THIS NOT ONLY COULD HAVE CAUSED INJURY TO ME BUT TO OTHERS AS I HAD TO STOP SUDDENLY ABORTING THE TURN. WHEN I FINALLY MADE IT HOME...10 MILES AWAY...I WENT ON THE INTERNET ONLY TO FIND MANY SIMILAR AND JUST AS DISTURBING INCIDENTS ON THIS MATTER. ONE I FIND EXTREMELY DISTURBING IS THAT IN CANADA, THIS SITUATION HAS BEEN RECALLED, BUT IN THE US, THE COBALT HAS BEEN RECALLED BUT NOT THE HHR. THE POWER STEERING MODULES ARE EXACTLY THE SAME....PART NUMBERS EVERYTHING....SO I GUESS WHAT I WANT TO KNOW IS , WHY HASN'T THIS PROBLEM BEEN ADDRESSED IN CONCERN TO THE HHR? SHAME ON GMC AS THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. IS IT GOING TO TAKE SOMEONE GETTING KILLED? THIS PROBLEM NEED TO BE RESOLVED.....YESTERDAY. *TR
THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT ON MY CAR A LITTLE OVER A YEAR AGO. CHEVY IS AWARE OF THIS. THEY HAVE MANY OTHER COMPLAINTS OF THIS SAME NATURE. THEY ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE ISSUE WAS THE POWER STEERING MODULE, WHICH IS THE SAME ISSUE THE HAVE WITH THE COBALT OR VOLT. THEY RECALLED THESE OTHER VEHICLES; AND A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE CHEVY HHR'S WERE RECALLED FOR THIS ISSUE BUT MY PARTICULAR YEAR WAS NOT INCLUDED, FOR SOME REASON. THIS IS NOT FAIR. THE IDENTICAL ISSUE IS HAPPENING WITH ALL YEARS OF THE HHR, BUT THE RECALL DIDN'T REFLECT THIS. I PAID ALMOST $300 TO HAVE THIS ISSUE FIXED, SINCE CHEVY WASN'T DOING ANYTHING TO CORRECT THIS. I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHY THIS YEAR VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I'VE ASKED THIS EXACT QUESTION TO CHEVY MULTIPLE TIMES, BUT THEY HAVE YET TO PROVIDE AN ANSWER. *TR
WHILE DRIVING, MY WIFE SAID THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON AND POWER STEERING WENT OUT. I WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO TURN WHICH NEARLY CAUSED A HEAD ON COLLISION. THIS IS AN UN-SAFE STEERING MOTOR USED IN THIS AUTOMOBILE AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED ASAP BEFORE SOMEBODY GETS KILLED! THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME AS WELL AND HAS HAPPENED ON AT LEAST A DOZEN DIFFERENT DATES. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY GOING 70 MPH AND ALL THE ALARMS, INDICATING LIGHTS CAME ON AND THEN THE CARE LOSS POWER. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET HHR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WATER WAS LEAKING INTO THE VEHICLE FROM THE WINDSHIELD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DIAGNOSED THAT THE COMPUTER BOARD HAD BECOME WET. THE TECHNICIAN WAS NOT ABLE TO SPECIFICALLY DETERMINE THE FAILURE THAT ALLOWED THE WATER TO ENTER THE VEHICLE HOWEVER, THERE WERE REPAIRS MADE TO THE COMPUTER BOARD. THE MANUFACTURE WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 37,000 AND THE CURRENT WAS 50,000.
RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING FAILURE. VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
I DON'T KNOW IF ITS AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM TC LIGHT GOES ON AND ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON, CAR JUMPS ALITTLE THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR A WHILE, THIS CAR IS ONLY 49000 MILES I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW AND PAID IT OFF LIKE A MERCEDES BENZ SINCE MY CREDIT WAS SCREWED UP AND NOW I AM HAVING PROBLEM AM RETIRED AND WIFE NOT WORKING PLEASE HELP US OUT I NEED MY CAR TO GET AROUND, I DIDN'T THINK I WAS GOING TO HAVE ANY PROBLEMS FOR 10 YRS ........................................... *TR
MY WIFE HAD A COBALT AND THE POWER STEERING WAS GOING OUT. EVENTUALLY THERE WAS A RECALL. MY HHR IS DOING THE EXACT SAME THING NOW.THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AND IT LISTS "POWER STEERING" ACROSS THE DASH. I TOOK IT TO THE MECHANIC AND THEY STATED IT WILL HAVE TO BE FIXED AT THE DEALER. GM HAS YET TO ISSUE A RECALL ON THE HHR'S BUT MANY CONSUMERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE SAME ISSUES. I HOPE BY FILING THIS COMPLAINT I CAN BE PART OF THE SOLUTION TO GET GM TO ISSUE THIS PENDING RECALL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET HHR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE POWER STEERING WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE POWER STEERING FAILED. THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT STEERING BECAME EXTREMELY HARD TO MANEUVER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE BUT DID NOT OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED ON ANY RECALLS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 103,000.
I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE STEERING UNTIL I DRIVE A FEW MILES. AFTER I DRIVE MY 2006 CHEVY HHR A FEW MILES THE POWER STEERING LIGHT COMES ON & MY ELECTRIC POWER STEERING COMPLETELY STOPS..THE CAR IS VERY HARD TO STEER AND ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PARK..WHEN I NEED TO PARK I HAVE TO TURN MY CAR OFF & THEN START IT BACK UP. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH ON THIS PROBLEM AND HAVE FOUND THAT MY HHR IS NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE POWER STEERING AND THERE WERE ALSO OTHER CHEVY MAKES & MODELS.WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND THERE WAS A RECALL ON THEM..WILL YOU PLEASE HAVE A RECALL ON THE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING ON THE 2006 CHEVY HHR SO WE CAN BE SAFE ON THE ROAD...[XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
HAD POWER STEERING ISSUE DID SOME RESEARCH TURNS OUT TO BE OVER HEAT.. CHECK COOLANT LEVELS. MY COOLANT TEMP. OVER 200 ADDED COOLANT NOW AROUND 190 STEERING WORKS FINE. *JB

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 71,000.
JUST TURNING INTO DRIVEWAY AND POWER STEERING WENT OUT. WARNING LIGHT CAME ON AND CHIMED. COULD BARELY TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. GLAD IT DID NOT HAPPEN ON HIGHWAY WITH GRANDKIDS IN CAR EARLIER IN WEEK WHILE DRIVING CROSS-COUNTRY DOING UP TO 75 MPH. SCARY ENOUGH WITH LITTLE CONTROL ON MY OWN PROPERTY BECAUSE I ABOUT MISSED THE DRIVEWAY AND HIT CURB! RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM AM KEENLY AWARE THAT THIS IS COMMON AMONG HHR OWNERS. WHY NO RECALL? IF I HAD KNOWN ABOUT THIS I WOULD HAVE NEVER PUT MY FAMILY AT RISK IN THIS VEHICLE BY DRIVING CROSS COUNTRY ON VACATIONS. STEERING, BRAKES AND EXCESSIVE ACCELERATION MECHANICAL ISSUES ARE PARAMOUNT TO SAFETY ON THE ROADWAYS! *TR
MY SON WAS DRIVING MY CAR ON THE PARKWAY AT ABOUT 55 MPH. HE SAID THERE WAS A BEEPING SOUND, THE DRIVER INFORMATION CENTER SHOWED POWER STEERING. AT THAT TIME HE NOTICED HE HAD NO POWER STEERING. HE DROVE OFF THE EXIT AND PULLED INTO A GAS STATION. HE SHUT OFF THE ENGINE, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED THE CAR. HE THEN HAD POWER STEERING AGAIN. HE RELATED THE INCIDENT TO ME AND TOLD ME THAT ALTHOUGH THE POWER STEERING WAS OUT HE COULD STILL STEER THE CAR. I WAS ON LONG ISLAND AFTER A DEATH IN THE FAMILY AND COULD NOT HAVE IT CHECKED OUT RIGHT AWAY. A FEW DAYS LATER I WAS DRIVING THE CAR AND THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME. I AM A SIXTY YEAR OLD WOMAN AND NOT AS STRONG AS MY SON. I WAS ABLE TO TURN THE CORNER AND THEN PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WHERE I TURNED THE CAR OFF WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND DROVE TO MY DESTINATION, WHICH WAS ABOUT A MILE. I SPOKE TO MY HUSBAND WHO WORKS FOR A CHEVROLET DEALER, WHO THEN SPOKE TO THE MECHANIC WHO TAKES CARE OF MY CAR. HE LOOKED IT UP AND FOUND A TSB ON THIS PROBLEM. A FEW DAYS LATER I DROVE MY MOM TO A STORE WHICH WAS ABOUT 15 OR 20 MILES AWAY. WE WERE JUST ABOUT THERE WHEN THE STEERING WENT OUT AGAIN. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE INTO THE PARKING LOT, BUT PARKING WAS VERY DIFFICULT. I ALSO HAD TO DRIVE THE CAR 20 MILES BACK TO MY MOMS HOUSE. WE WERE TOLD THAT THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT I DISAGREE. IT MAY NOT BE HARD FOR A MAN TO STEER THE VEHICLE WITH NO POWER STEERING, BUT FROM A WOMANS POINT OF VIEW, IT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS VEHICLE IN CANADA AND ON COBALTS AND PONTIAC G4S AND G6S IN THE USA. THE CAR WAS FIXED TODAY, BUT BECAUSE I WAS AWAY FROM MY USUAL MECHANIC(AT THE DEALERSHIP WHERE MY HUSBAND WORKS), IT COST ME ALMOST $400.00 TO HAVE IT FIXED. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN DECIDING WHAT IS A SAFETY ISSUE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 CHEVROLET HHR. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE STEERING FAILED. THE POWER STEERING LIGHT ILLUMINATED BEFORE THE FAILURE OCCURRED AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS HARD TO TURN. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN TURNED OFF FOR A MOMENT TO HAVE THE STEERING RETURN TO NORMAL FUNCTION. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 74,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 74,300.
SOME PORTION OF THE SHIFTER MECHANISM FAILED. IT ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO SHIFT GEARS AT WILL, WITH OR WITHOUT A KEY AND WITH OR WITHOUT THE ENGINE RUNNING. IT ALSO ALLOWS THE VEHICLE TO BE PUT INTO GEAR WITHOUT DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL. THE VEHICLE CAN 'BUMP' FROM 'PARK' INTO ANY GEAR AND FROM ANY GEAR TO ANY OTHER GEAR, INCLUDING "REVERSE". WHILE DRIVING, ONE BUMP CAUSED IT TO SHIFT INTO 'NEUTRAL'. ANOTHER CAUSED A DOWNSHIFT. ONE CAN LEAVE TURN OFF THE IGNITION & LEAVE THE CAR WITHOUT PUTTING IT SECURELY INTO 'PARK'. I AM NOT POSITIVE, BUT I BELIEVE I COULD ALSO MAKE THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK WHILE THE IGNITION WAS ON. I TRIED THIS WHILE ATTEMPTING TO REMOVE THE KEY. I DID NTO WANT TO TRY AGAIN, FEARING I WOULD MAKE THE SITUATION WORSE. ADDITIONALLY, THE KEY IS NOW RETAINED IN THE IGNITION AND CAN NOT BE REMOVED. THE CAR CAN BE MORE EASILY STOLEN. (ON MINE, I FOUND OUT HOW TO FORCE THE KEY OUT OF THE IGNITION. BUT THE GEAR SHIFTER CAN STILL BUMP AROUND.) THE MENTIONED CRASH WAS FROM EXITING THE CAR EITHER WITHOUT IT BEING SECURELY IN 'PARK' OR FROM HAVING IT FALLOUT OF 'PARK'. IT ROLLED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE. I ENTERED "0 MPH" BECAUSE I WASN'T THERE TO SEE THE CAR ROLL. IT WAS ON A SMALL ENOUGH INCLINE THAT NO DAMAGE WAS DONE OTHER THAN SCRATCHES. *TR
STARTING BACK IN AUGUST, NOW PRETTY MUCH EVERY TIME WE DRIVE THE CAR, THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT. IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE WHEEL, SEEMINGLY HARDER THAN IF WE HAD NO POWER STEERING AT ALL. WHILE DRIVING STRAIGHT THIS IS NOT REALLY A SAFETY ISSUE, BUT IF THE POWER STEERING WERE OUT AND WE NEEDED TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT, IT WOULD BE NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. YOU USED TO BE ABLE TO TURN THE CAR OFF, WAIT 30 SECONDS-1 MINUTE, AND TURN THE CAR BACK ON, AND IT WOULD BE FINE THE REST OF THE TRIP. NOW, YOU CAN TURN IT OFF/BACK ON, BUT THE POWER STEERING GOES OUT AGAIN IN JUST A FEW MINUTES. FROM WHAT I HAVE SEEN ONLINE, THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE CHEVY COBALT (WHICH HAS THE SAME STEERING SETUP) AND IN CANADA. *TR
I DROVE MY VEHICLE TO NEW JERSEY FOR VACATION BUT CAME BACK TO VIRGINIA WITHIN TWO DAYS. UPON MY ARRIVAL IN VIRGINIA, I REPACKED MY BAGS AND HEADED TO CHARLOTTE, NC. ALL THE DRIVING THAT I WAS DOING WAS HIGHWAY DRIVING. TO NEW JERSEY I DROVE I-81 NORTH AND I-78 EAST. TO CHARLOTTE, NC I DROVE 220 SOUTH AND I-85 SOUTH. AFTER I GOT OFF ON I-85 SOUTH TO GO BACK TO THE HOTEL ON THE WAY UP THE HILL TOWARDS THE HOTEL THE CAR STOPPED MOVING FORWARD. IT WOULD REV UP WHEN PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR BUT WOULD NOT MOVE FORWARD. THE CAR HOWEVER WOULD SHIFT GEARS AND GO IN REVERSE. I PARKED THE CAR IN A PARKING LOT AND HAD CALLED MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP.THE DEALERSHIP DETERMINED THAT THE TRANSMISSION FAILED BUT COULD NOT GIVE ME A DETERMINATION AS TO WHY IT FAILED. HAD THE TRANSMISSION FAILED AS I WAS SPEEDING DOWN I-85 SOUTH THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. ADDITIONALLY, THIS MORNING (AUGUST 22ND , 2012) THE CAR WOULD NOT START. THE LIGHTS INSIDE THE CAR WOULD COME ON SUCH AS THE GAUGE LIGHTS, RADIO, ETC BUT THE ENGINE WOULD NOT TURN OVER. I HAD THE CAR TOWED TO THE MIDPOINT CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE STARTER WAS BAD AND THUS HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE ONLY INDICATION THAT THERE WAS AT LEAST SOME POWER WAS THE INDICATOR LIGHT ON MY CAR CHARGER. I CONTACTED MY INSURANCE COMPANY AND RECEIVED A JUMP START FROM A LOCAL TOW SERVICE AND THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN RUNNING SMOOTHLY EVER SINCE. THIS HAS OCCURRED TWICE IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS BUT THERE IS NO INDICATION AS TO WHAT MAY BE DRAINING THE BATTERY'S POWER. I HAVE HAD THE BATTERY CHECKED TWICE AND ON THESE TWO OCCASIONS AND IS DEEMED TO STILL BE GOOD. *TR
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE POWER STEERING SUDDENLY WENT OUT AGAIN; THIS TIME CAUSING ME TO BACK INTO A SMALL POLE. NOW I HAVE A GAPING HOLE IN MY BUMPER. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. NOW I SEE THEY MAY HAVE ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE, BUT IN CANADA (HOWEVER, I'VE YET TO FIND THAT NOTICE). ALSO, THEY CONSTANTLY HAVING ISSUES WITH STEERING ON OTHER CHEVY/GM VEHICLES. SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE, BEFORE SOMEONE REALLY GETS HURT. THE VEHICLE'S POWER STEERING SYSTEM STOPPED WORKING ABRUPTLY WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE VEHICLE WAS OCCUPIED BY A MOTHER AND TWO SMALL CHILDREN AT THE TIME. THE STEERING SYSTEM CAN ONLY BE RESET BY TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF AND THEN BACK ON. IT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES SINCE THE INITIAL INCIDENT. TODAY, JULY 23, 2012, THE STEERING SYSTEM ABRUPTLY STOPPED WORKING EIGHT TIMES IN APPROXIMATELY A TWENTY MINUTE TIME SPAN. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY PROBLEM THAT APPARENTLY GM IS AWARE OF. I TOOK MY 2006 HHR TO THE DEALERSHIP AND WAS TOLD MY CAR WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. MY CAR HAS EXHIBITED THE SAME PROBLEMS AS THOSE DESCRIBED, BUT I WAS TOLD THE DEALERSHIP WOULD NOT LOOK AT MY VEHICLE. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY MY HHR IS NOT PART OF THE RECALL WHILE OTHERS ARE. AFTER TRAVELING BACK AND FORTH FROM ONE COUNTY TO ANOTHER (APPROX 130 MILES ROUNDTRIP) AS I EXITED THE FWY THE CAR WAS DRIVING NORMAL EXCEPT FOR I WAS ON EMPTY AT THIS POINT. I CAME TO A COMPLETE STOP WHEN LIGHT TURNED GREEN I BEGAN TO ACCELERATE. UPON ACCELERATION AT APPROX. 10-15MPH THE CAR MADE A HARD JERKING MOTION AS THOUGH IT WAS HAVING A HARD TIME SHIFTING GEARS HOWEVER MY 06 HHR IS AN AUTOMATIC. AT THIS POINT I ALSO NOTICED THAT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAD NOW ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. I TOOK THE CAR STRAIGHT HOME AND DID NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE AGAIN FOR 3-4 DAYS. THEN ONE DAY I DROVE IT APPROX 15 MILES ALL WAS GOOD. I WENT SHOPPING UPON LEAVING THE CAR STILL APPEARED TO BE NORMAL. THEN WHILE ON THE FWY APPROX 70MPH I NOTICED THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON AGAIN AS WELL AS THE T/C LIGHT (TRACTION CONTROL) THE CAR CONTINUED TO DRIVE "NORMAL" BUT ONCE I CAME TO A STOP ON THE OFFRAMP AND BEGAN TO ACCELERATE THE JERKING MOTION HAPPENED AGAIN. I'VE NOTICED THAT ON A FEW OCCASIONS THIS HAPPENS ONCE THE GAS IS ON EMPTY. I ALSO NOTICED ON ONE OCCASION THAT ONCE I HAD PUT A LITTLE OVER HALF A TANK OF GAS IN AS WELL AS A BOTTLE OF FUEL INJECTOR CLEANER THAT THE INDICATOR LIGHTS SHUT OFF AS WELL AS THE JERKING HAD DISAPPEARS. WE HAVE HAD THE TRANSMISSION FLUSHED AND STILL THE PROBLEM PERSISTS. ASIDE FROM THAT WHEN YOU TRY TO REMOTE START THE ENGINE ONCE THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON THE REMOTE START NO LONGER WORKS. YOU HEAR THE ELECTRICAL ALL COME ON BUT THAT'S IT. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN THE OTHER NIGHT I ATTEMPT TO EXIT MY CAR AND THE DRIVER DOOR HANDLE SNAPPED RIGHT OFF. MY HUSBAND CONTACTED THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP REQUESTING PRICE FOR THE PART AND WAS TOLD $300+. I JUST FOUND THE PIECE FOR $63.00 ONLINE. ..UNBELIEVABLE! BUT THE HANDLE BROKE SO EASILY. I DIDN'T PULL HARD. IF I HAD THE DOOR WOULD'VE AT LEAST POPPED OPEN A LIL. BUT IT DIDN'T BUDGE. *TR

FOR ABOUT A MONTH MY KEY KEPT GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION BUT I COULD ALWAYS GET IT OUT MYSELF. I WOULD SHIFT FROM "PARK" TO "DRIVE" AND THEN BACK TO "PARK" TO REMOVE IT. FINALLY ONE DAY I COULD NOT REMOVE IT. I BROUGHT IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAD TO HAVE A PART IN THE SHIFTER REPLACED TO FIX THE PROBLEM. APPARENTLY THE "CAR" COULD NO LONGER RECOGNIZE IT WAS IN PARK AND SAFE TO REMOVE THE KEYS. THE COST WAS $250.00 AND NOW THE KEY STILL STICKS. IT SEEMS LIKE THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM AND CHEVY SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR IT. *JB

HAD A NEW KEY CUT TO REPLACE A LOST KEY. SHORTLY AFTER I RETRIEVED THE VEHICLE, KEY I WAS USING GOT STUCK IN THE IGNITION. I GOT IT OUT ONCE BUT I WAS NOT ABLE TO DO SO THE NEXT TIME I DROVE THE VEHICLE. APPARENTLY, THERE IS A KNOWN ISSUE WITH THE KEYS GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITIONS OF THE HHR'S. FORTUNATELY, MY CAR WAS NOT RUNNING AT THE TIME THE KEY GOT STUCK IN THE IGNITION AS I HAVE DISCOVERED SEVERAL OTHER HAS IN MY RESEARCH. TWO EMPLOYEES I SPOKE WITH AT BACHMAN AUTO GROUP (STEVE AND TONY) INFORMED ME THEY ALREADY KNEW ABOUT THE KEY GETTING STUCK IN THE IGNITION OF THE HHR'S. IF THIS IS A KNOWN ISSUE, HOW...CAN THERE NOT BE A RECALL ON THIS TO HAVE THEM REPAIRED. I CONTACTED GM CORPORATE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND FROM THE SOUND OF THINGS I AM GOING TO LIABLE TO PAY FOR THE REPAIRS EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW THESE VEHICLES HAD A HISTORY OF THE IGNITION LOCKING UP WHEN THE KEY IS STILL IN THE IGNITION. AS I WAS DRIVING HOME ON I-40, I LOST POWER STEERING, THE POWER STEERING LIGHT CAME ON, AND THE STEERING WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO CONTROL, AND TURNING WAS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO MANEUVER SAFELY. I FOUND OUT ALSO THAT THE CHEVY COBALT (WHICH ALSO HAS THE SAME STEERING COLUMN) HAS A RECALL ON IT BUT NOT THE CHEVY HHR. I WAS DRIVING IN OUR LOCAL ZOO PARKING LOT. WITH PEOPLE CROSSING AND MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT. A MESSAGE CAME UP ON THE CONSOLE SAYING "POWER STEERING". THIS VEHICLE WAS BEING TOWED BEHIND A MOTORHOME. WHEN WE ARRIVED AT OUR DESTINATION THE BATTERY WAS DEAD. THE BATTERY IS LOCATED IN THE REAR HATCH SECTION. WE WERE ABLE TO MANUALLY UNLOCK THE DRIVER DOOR WITH A KEY. THERE IS NO KEY LOCK ON THE OUTSIDE TO THE HATCH SECTION TO ACCESS THE BATTERY TO CHARGE IT. I CLIMBED INSIDE THE CAR AND GOT INTO THE BACK HATCH AREA TO LOCATE A MANUAL LOCK (THERE WAS NONE ),. I WAS TRAPPED, AND THEN HAD TO GET BACK TO THE FRONT TO GET OUT THE DRIVER'S DOOR. WHILE DRIVING ON I-55 THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT AND MADE THE CAR ALMOST LUNGE INTO A GUARD RAIL. THE PROBLEM PERSISTED INTERMITTENTLY MAKING THE VEHICLE DANGEROUS TO HANDLE AT SLOW SPEEDS. RESEARCH ON THIS ISSUE TURNED UP MASSIVE REPORTS OF THE POWER STEERING MOTOR FAILING. THIS HAS RESULTED IN A RECALL IN CANADA ON THE HHRS. IN THE US THE CHEVROLET COBALT HAD THE SAME ISSUE AND WAS RECALLED. THE HHR AND COBALT USE THE SAME POWER STEERING MOTOR. I WAS DRIVING MY VEHICLE ON THE 401 ON RAMP (GOING 35KM/HR) IT WAS A RAINY DAY. I RANDOMLY AND ALL OF A SUDDEN LOST POWER, INCLUDING MY POWER STEERING. NO LIGHTS, NO WARNINGS, JUST GONE. I COULDN'T TURN THE WHEEL TO CONTINUE WITH THE CURVED ON RAMP. I'M NOT THAT STRONG AND WITHOUT POWER STEERING I COULDN'T DO IT AS WELL. AS I WASN'T ABLE TO DO MUCH I HIT THE BREAK AFTER I WAS ALREADY MID AIR FROM HITTING THE CURB AND GOING STRAIGHT. I LANDED PERPENDICULAR ON THE 401. TAKING UP ALL OF LANE 1 AND PART OF LANE 2. LUCKY TRAFFIC STOPPED BEFORE HITTING MY CAR. THIS WAS TERRIFYING. NO WARNING BUT NO POWER AND WHACK GOODBYE POWER STEERING. *TR
