TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, THE CONTACT SMELLED A BURNING ODOR AND NOTICED SMOKE UNDER THE HOOD WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE OVERHEATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE HEAD GASKET NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V701000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE KEY EMITTED FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH. THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO PLACE THE KEY BACK; HOWEVER, THE IGNITION WAS NOT RECOGNIZING THE KEY. IN ADDITION, THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE STALLED. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS, THE VEHICLE WAS ABLE TO RESTART. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE STARTING MECHANISM FAILED. AS A RESULT, THE STARTER WAS REPLACED BUT THE FAILURE PERSISTED. THE MECHANIC THEN INFORMED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH FAILED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 160,883.

THE DOORS WOULD NOT UNLOCK AND TRAPPED THE DRIVER INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT INDICATED THAT A SECURITY SENSOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. IN ADDITION, WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS SHUT OFF, ALL THE INTERIOR AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS REMAINED ILLUMINATED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURES WAS NOT DIAGNOSED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 40 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME DIFFICULT TO MANEUVER AS THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT DISCOVERED THAT THE IGNITION KEY HAD MOVED INTO THE ACCESSORY POSITION. THE CONTACT PULLED OVER AND NOTICED SMOKE EMITTING FROM THE HOOD OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERMIX OF COOLANT AND OIL IN THE ENGINE, AND THE HEAD GASKET AND RADIATOR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT RECEIVED A NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V701000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING) HOWEVER, THE PART FOR THE RECALL WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE DEALER TOLD THE CONTACT THAT THE RECALL REMEDY WOULD NOT FIX THE SPECIFIC FAILURE OF THE HEAD GASKET. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN. MY 2000 CHEVY IMPALA HAS REAR END NOISES WHEN DRIVING OVER SLIGHT ROAD BUMPS. MY MECHANIC INSPECTED CAR REAR END AND FOUND BOTH REAR STRUT TOWERS BADLY RUSTED, ESPECIALLY IN TRUNK, WITH NOT MUCH SUPPORT FOR STRUT MOUNTS. I WAS TOLD THE REAR END WILL EVENTUALLY COLLAPSE AND CAR WILL NOT BE DRIVABLE. CURRENTLY, THERE IS VERY LITTLE ROOM BEFORE STRUT MOUNTS WILL TOUCH BOTH REAR TIRES DUE TO RUSTED STRUT TOWERS, A DEFINITE SAFETY CONCERN. WHAT I READ ELSEWHERE IS THAT ON THE FIRST 2000 NEW YEAR W-BODY DESIGN, THERE IS OVERLAPPING SHEET METAL AT THE TOP OF THE TOWERS, THAT GM DID NOT SEAL. SO IT'S A HUGE MOISTURE TRAP, CAUSING RUST TO OCCUR. LATER YEARS GM PUT IN PLASTIC SHIELDS IN THE WHEEL WELLS. AND WHETHER THEY PUT A SEALER IN WHERE THE METAL PANELS OVERLAP WASN'T MENTIONED. THIS 15 YEAR OLD CAR HAS VERY LITTLE OVERALL BODY RUST, BELOW AVERAGE MILES, MECHANICALLY RUNS GREAT AND HAS MANY MORE MILES TO GO. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THIS GM OBVIOUS DESIGN FLAW NOW HAS TO COST ME TO REPAIR IF I WANT TO CONTINUE DRIVING MY CAR. VERBAL ESTIMATES QUOTED ARE ACTUALLY MORE THAN KELLY BLUE BOOK VALUE OF THE CAR. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL CHEVY OWNER STARTING WITH MY FIRST 1963 CHEVY BISCAYNE. THIS IS MY FIRST MAJOR COMPLAINT ABOUT GM BECAUSE THIS IS NOT DUE TO MY ABUSE OR NEGLIGENCE. HOWEVER, DUE TO THE LACK OF FORESIGHT TO THIS DESIGN FLAW, GM SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE.

THE CONTACT PUT THE FIRE OUT USING A FIRE EXTINGUISHER AND NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. I WENT TO START MY 2000 CHEVY IMPALA AFTER SITTING FOR 2 DAYS IN THE COLD. IT WOULD NOT START. WE OPENED THE ENGINE TO CHARGE THE BATTERY. I TRIED TO START THE CAR ONE MORE TIME AND IT SOUNDED LIKE A BOMB WENT OFF. PARTS FLEW EVERYWHERE HITTING EVERYONE AROUND THE CAR. WHEN WE CHECKED THE ENGINE WE NOTICED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD EXPLODED. THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED BY A CERTIFIED MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FRACTURED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CAR SAID ENGINE POWER REDUCED. STARTING DISABLED AND CUT OFF. LOSING ALL CONTROL OF BRAKES STEERING AND ACCELERATION. AT THIS POINT I REARENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE. *TR
WENT TO START CAR AND INTAKE BLEW UP, CAUSING A LARGE FIRE AND PIECES OF THE BURNING PLASTIC HIT MY SON WHICH WAS STANDING BY CAR. THE HOOD WAS UP AT THE TIME AND WE DID GET THE FIRE OUT. IT APPEARS THIS WAS A FUEL REGULATOR ISSUE AND I DO NOT SHOW IT AS BEING DUE FOR MY CAR. IT MUST OF BEEN DONE ALREADY BUT THIS ISSUE STILL HAPPENS. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE IN THE DRIVEWAY, THERE WAS A LOUD BOOM AND THE ENGINE CAUGHT FIRE. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO EXTINGUISH THE FLAMES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED AND REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 162,000.
PULLING OUT OF THE DEALERSHIP LOCATED ON A BUSY STREET AND THE TRANSMISSION WOULDN'T ENGAGE. IT WAS JUST SURGING AND I ALMOST CAUSED A MAJOR ACCIDENT. READING ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS REGARDING THIS SAME PROBLEM REALLY DISTURBS ME. MY SON IN LAW WORKS FOR GM. I ONLY OWN CHEVYS BUT TO THINK THAT YOU WOULD ALLOW THIS OBVIOUS PROBLEM TO GO ON PUTTING MANY PEOPLES LIVES AT RISK MAKES ME RETHINK MY DECISION. WAS DRIVING CAR HEARD LOUD BOOM SOUND UNDER HOOD THEN SMOKE AND FIRE CAME FROM UNDER HOOD. I PUT FIRE OUT BUT DON'T KNOW IF CAR WILL START SCARED TO TRY. SOMETIMES WHEN CAR IS PLACED IN PARK THE KEY WILL NOT TURN TO OFF IT JUST STAYS IN ACC YOU HAVE TO PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE AGAIN AND THEN TRY TO PLACE IT IN PARK AGAIN. ANOTHER PROBLEM I AM HAVING NOW IS THE KEY WILL NOT TURN WHEN PLACED IN IGNITION AND THE BRAKE PEDAL CAN NOT BE PUSHED AND THE CAR CAN NOT MOVE OUT OF PARK SO MY CAR IS STUCK ON A LOT. *TR
THE VEHICLE ACCELERATED BY ITSELF AS I WAS TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE ENGINE REVVING SO LOUDLY A PERSON STOPPED AND OBSERVED THE COLLISION AS THE IMPALA CRASHED INTO A PARKED VEHICLE DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF IT ON THE OTHER SIDE. I WENT TO START MY CAR, WHICH HAD BEEN PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY FOR A COUPLE DAYS, AND WHEN I TURNED THE KEY I HEARD A LOUD POP AND INSTANTLY SAW SMOKE COMING FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE CAR WON'T START SECURITY LIGHT FLASHES. I USUALLY HAVE TO LEAVE IT IN THE ON POSITION FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES THEN BACK TO ACCESSORY FOR TEN SECONDS THEN TO ON POSITION FOR TWO SECONDS THEN MOSTLY IT WILL START OTHER TIMES IT CAN TAKE UP TO FOUR ATTEMPTS. I WAS HEADING TO WORK I SLOWED TO TURN RIGHT ON TO THE ON RAMP OF THE INTERSTATE, AS I BEGAN MY TURN I LOST ALL POWER THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF, LIGHTS WENT DEAD AND THE BRAKES WENT OUT. I MADE IT TO THE CURB AND VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESTART.VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED HOME. I HAVE CHECKED ALL THAT COULD HAVE CAUSED THE ISSUE AND HAVE NARROWED IT DOWN TO THE IGNITION SWITCH, BATTERY HAS BEEN REPLACED EVEN THOUGH IT CHECKED FINE. STARTER IS BRAND NEW. MASS AIR SENSOR CHECKS OK AND CAM AND CRANK SENSORS CHECK OK. I WAS LUCKY IF I HAD BEEN ON THE INTERSTATE I WOULD HAVE HAD NO CHANCE TO RECOVER FROM THIS FAILURE. EVEN THOUGH THIS VEHICLE IS 14 YEARS OLD THIS TYPE OF FAILURE SHOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. I HAVE NEVER CARRIED MORE THAN THE IGNITION KEY AND KEY FOB ON THE KEY RING AS BOTH MY WIFE AND I USE THE VEHICLE. *TR
FOLLOW-UP ON COMPLAINT# 10650094. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM,AND TRIED TO GET ASSISTANCE FROM GM WITH NO RESULTS OTHER THAT THE RUN-AROUND. I HAVE EXPLAINED THAT THE RECALL OF THIS VEHICLE AND REPAIR THAT IS SUGGESTED IS NOT THE ISSUE. THE IGNITION IS A 2 PART SWITCH AND THE MECHANICAL PART OF THE SWITCH IS ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IN MY CASE IS THAT THE ELECTRICAL PART OF THE SWITCH IS WHAT CONTROLS THE POWER, BRAKES, AIRBAG, AND ALL OTHER FUNCTIONS. YOU NEED TO LOOK AT THE ENTIRE SWITCH ASSEMBLY. ENTERED MY PARKED CAR ON A SLOPING DRIVEWAY AND STARTED THE ENGINE TO PULL AWAY. I HIT THE BRAKE PEDAL TO PUT THE CAR IN GEAR AND THE BRAKE PEDAL GAVE UNDER THE PRESSURE OF MY FOOT AND WENT TO THE FLOORBOARD. NO BRAKES, CAR ROLLED INTO STREET AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITH VERY LITTLE STOPPING ABILITY. THANK GOODNESS I ONLY HAD TO GO A SHORT DISTANCE TO MY HOUSE WITH NO STOPPING REQUIRED IN THE 6 MILE TRIP. AS IT TURNS OUT THE REAR BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED AWAY AND BLEW OUT UNDER NORMAL USE AND DUMPED THE FLUID. *TR

WHILE ENTERING A RESIDENTIAL DRIVEWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE CONTACT TURNED THE STEERING WHEEL TO THE RIGHT AND HEARD AN ABNORMAL CLICKING SOUND COMING FROM THE STEERING COLUMN. IMMEDIATELY, THE KEYS FELL FROM THE IGNITION SWITCH AND ONTO THE FLOORBOARD. THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES BECAME INOPERABLE AND THE VEHICLE DID NOT STOP UNTIL IT STRUCK A BED OF ROCKS, WHICH PREVENTED THE VEHICLE FROM CRASHING INTO THE HOUSE. THE IGNITION SWITCH SEIZED AND PREVENTED THE KEY FROM BEING INSERTED INTO THE IGNITION TO START THE VEHICLE. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AT THE CONTACT'S EXPENSE OF $300, INCLUDING PARTS AND LABOR, AND AN ADDITIONAL $12 FOR A NEW SET OF KEYS FOR THE REPLACEMENT IGNITION SWITCH. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
APPLIED BRAKES WHILE APPROACHING A STOP SIGN, THE BRAKE PEDAL SUNK ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR HOLDING NO PRESSURE WHICH CAUSE ME TO ROLL THROUGH A STOP SIGN AND INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC. SHOP BRAKE LINES WHERE CORRODED INSIDE OUT AND ALL NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR

CORRODED THROUGH BRAKE LINE! I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 65 MPH AND APPLIED THE BRAKES MILDLY. MY FOOT FELT NORMAL BRAKE RESISTANCE FOR AN INSTANT AND THEN THE BRAKE PEDAL SUDDENLY WENT TO THE FLOOR. FORTUNATELY, AS MY SLOWING WAS NOT CRITICAL AT THAT MOMENT, THE FAILED BRAKING DID NOT RESULT IN A DISASTER. DURING MY DIAGNOSIS OF THE PROBLEM, ON APPLYING THE BRAKES MUCH BRAKE FLUID LEAKED ON THE GROUND BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER, BUT NOT INVOLVING THE MASTER CYLINDER. CLOSER INSPECTION I DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINE CROSSING THE FIREWALL TO THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL (ABOUT 12 INCHES BELOW THE MASTER CYLINDER AND A FEW INCHES TOWARD THE PASSENGER SIDE) WAS ASSEMBLED SUCH THAT IT IS EMBEDDED IN FELT (WHICH APPARENTLY PROVIDES SOUND DEADENING FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT) UP AGAINST THE FIREWALL FOR ABOUT 6 INCHES. THIS FELT HOLDS WATER AND REMAINS WET ALMOST CONTINUOUSLY IN THE NORTH CAROLINA ENVIRONMENT. THERE IS EXTENSIVE RUST ON THE BRAKE LINE IN THIS AREA - AND IT IS RUSTED THROUGH, WITH BRAKE FLUID SQUIRTING OUT WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THIS IS VERY STUPID AND DANGEROUS DESIGN PATH FOR THIS BRAKE LINE - IT SHOULD BE INSTALLED SUCH THAT IT DOES NOT CONTACT THE FELT. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IT WAS ASSEMBLED THIS WAY (THE LINE IS NOT FLEXIBLE AT THIS POINT) - FIRMLY FORCED UP AGAINST THE FELT ON THE FIREWALL AND HELD IN THIS POSITION BY FASTENERS - NOT DUE TO ANY MOVEMENT OF THE LINE AFTER ASSEMBLY. THIS UNNECESSARY FAILURE DUE TO STUPID DESIGN MAY WELL HAVE RESULTED IN A SERIOUS OR EVEN FATAL ACCIDENT, VERY POSSIBLY INVOLVING A PEDESTRIAN AND/OR ONE OR MORE AUTOMOBILES. ACCESS TO REPLACE THIS LINE WILL REQUIRE THE CAR TO BE ON A LIFT, WHICH I AM UNABLE TO PROVIDE, SUCH THAT I WILL HAVE TO PAY GOOD MONEY TO HAVE IT FIXED. I PULLED OVER AND KEPT CLICKING THE LIGHTS LEVER AND IT WOULD GO FROM NO LIGHTS TO BRIGHT LIGHTS WITH EACH CLICK. I GOT THE LOW BEAM TO FINALLY COME BACK ON AFTER SEVERAL BACK AND FORTH CLICKS. THE POLICE STOPPED ME THAT NIGHT BECAUSE I HAD TO USE MY RIGHT HAND TO CLICK THE LIGHTS, WHICH IS ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CAR, WHICH CAUSED ME TO WEAVE A LITTLE.
