TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE FAILED TO START ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT. THE CONTACT HAD TO WIGGLE THE KEY IN ORDER TO START THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE VEHICLE WAS INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 14V400000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM); HOWEVER, THE PART NEEDED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE WAS UNAVAILABLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNAVAILABLE.
MY WIFE WENT TO START THE CAR TO MOVE IT OUT OF THE WAY AND THE ENGINE EXPLODED BURST INTO FLAMES, INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS BLOWN INTO PIECES. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 IMPALA WITH APPROXIMATELY 161,000 MILES ON IT. THE CAR IS USED AND I AM THE 2ND OWNER. I WENT TO HAVE MY NORMAL OIL CHANGE AS I HAD NOTICED THE LOW ENGINE OIL PRESSURE LIGHT HAD COME ON. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING OUT OF OIL FREQUENTLY, BUT I DIDN'T SEE ANY OIL LEAKS. THE PRINT OUT AFTER THE OIL CHANGE STATED MULTIPLE OIL LEAKS. BUT THERE WAS NEVER ANY OIL ON THE GROUND. THE CAR HAD BEEN RUNNING VERY ROUGH AND WAS STARING TO RUN WARMER THAN USUAL. NOT HOT, BUT PAST THE MIDDLE LINE ON THE TEMP GAUGE. AND I HAD NOTICED A BURNING SMELL AFTER DRIVING, BUT NEVER SAW ANY SMOKE. THIS ALL STARTED IN APRIL 2014 AND HAS BEEN ONGOING. I'VE TAKEN THE CAR TO A REPAIR SHOP AND NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON. NOW JULY 5,2014 I WENT TO TURN LEFT AND THE STEERING WHEEL WAS EXTREMELY HARD TO TURN. I HAD TO PUT A LOT OF MUSCLE INTO TURNING THE WHEEL. I CHECKED THE POWER STEERING FLUID AND SAW IT WAS LOW SO I TOPPED IT OFF. PROBLEM SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED RIGHT? WRONG. IT GOT WORSE. I TOOK IT TO A DIFFERENT REPAIR SHOP AND WAS TOLD IT WAS THE TENSIONER PULLEY. O'ER $100 LATER, THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE. WHEN I TURN LEFT THE WHEEL STAYS STUCK AND I HAVE TO JERK IT BACK STRAIGHT. THUS IS A SAFETY HAZARD AS I TRANSPORT MY FAMILY IN THIS VEHICLE. SINCE THESE PROBLEMS STARED THE CAR EATS A LOT OF GAS. GOING 5 MILES SHOULD NOT USE ALMOST A QUARTER TANK OF GAS AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON AND STAYS ON AT RANDOM TIMES, DURING THESES TIMES THE CAR EATS A LOT IF GAS. WHEN THE LIGHT IS NOT ON GAS MILEAGE IS OK. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. *TR
I HAVE A 2000 CHEVY IMPALA THAT I JUST BOUGHT, WHEN I'M DRIVING IT HAS A BURNING SMELL TO IT AND IT DROPPING OILFROM SOME WHERE. AND IT RUNS HOT, I HAVE TO TURN THE HEAT ON SO THE TEMPERATURE GAUGE WILL GO DOWN. *TR

THE CONTACT MENTIONED THAT THE ABS WARNING ILLUMINATED AND SECONDS AFTER NOTICING THE SMOKE, FLAMES STARTED TO EMIT FROM UNDER THE HOOD. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS CONTACTED WHO VERIFIED THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 108,000.
VEHICLE SHUTS OFF WHILE DRIVING... EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE!! THIS HAS HAPPENED ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. *TR
I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK AND MY CAR JUST SHUT OFF OUT OF NO WHERE AT A INTERSECTION, I WAS SCARED I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. THE CAR BEHIND ME ALMOST HIT ME BECAUSE OF IT. I TRIED STARTING MY CAR BACK UP AND IT WOULDN'T ROLL OVER OR MAKE A SOUND AND MY BRAKES WERE LIKE LOCKED UP . BUT ALL MY DASH LIGHTS WERE ON AND MY AIR BAG LIGHT KEPT BLINKING AND MY RADIO WAS WORKING. AFTER ABOUT 6 TIMES TRYING TO START MY CAR IT FINALLY STARTED UP AND THE AIR BAG LIGHT WENT OFF FOR LIKE 2 MINUTES AND CAME BACK ON AND MY TURN SIGNAL STOPPED WORKING AND STARTED MAKING A BUZZING SOUND . TIL THIS DAY IF THAT AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON MY CAR WONT START AND SOMETIMES I CAN PUT IT IN NEUTRAL AND IT WILL START . EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE MY CAR WILL ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN AND WHEN I PUT IT IN PARK IT SOUNDS LIKE MY CAR IS JUST GOING TO BLOW UP BECAUSE IT SOUNDS LIKE MY FOOT IS ON THE GAS . I TOOK MY CAR TO ADVANCED AUTO AND GOT A FREE TESTING ON IT AND MY STARTER IS GOOD AND SO IS MY BATTERY I RECENTLY GOT A NEW ONE . SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT COULD BE . BUT I HAVE NOTICED THAT ALOT OF OLDER IMPALAS HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM BECAUSE I HAVE GOOGLED AND SEARCHED ONLINE . *TR
I HAVE HAD THIS CAR SINCE IT WAS NEW. IN 2008 IT DIED ON MY WIFE,LUCKILY SHE WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT SHE HAS NEVER DROVE IT SINCE. I HAVE SPENT ABOUT A $1000 BUCKS TRYING TO FIND OUT WHAT IS GOING ON. IT WILL START UP AFTER YOU GET STOPPED AND PUT IT IN PARK. I HAVE TOOK IT TO THE CHEVY DEALER AND LEFT IT WITH THEM AND IT NEVER ACTS UP SO THEY ARE NOT ANY HELP. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT IS GOING TO DIE ON YOU SO YOU MUST ALWAYS DRIVE IN THE RIGHT LANE SO YOU CAN PULL OVER. YOU LOOSE POWER STEERING AND POWER BRAKES. I HAVE CALLED GM AND ASK THEM ABOUT IT BUT THEY JUST SAY THERE IS NOT A RECALL ON MY CAR.AFTER WATCHING TV ABOUT ALL THE GM CARS THAT ARE DYEING I THINK MY CAR IS DOING THE SAME THING. PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD WIPER FUNCTIONS FAILED WHILE DRIVING CAUSING VISIBILITY HAZARD. POSSIBLE MOTOR FAILURE. *TR
ON 2/24/14 AT APPROXIMATELY 2:50 PM, I PROPERLY ATTACHED A SET OF BATTERY JUMPER CABLES FROM MY TRUCK TO THIS CAR TO START IT FROM A DEAD BATTERY SITUATION. WHEN THE OWNER ATTEMPTED TO CRANK THE CAR, THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DURING THE CRANKING, RESULTING IN AN EXPLOSION AND SMALL FIRE. THE OWNER IMMEDIATELY SWITCHED THE CAR OFF, AND EXITED THE VEHICLE, AND I IMMEDIATELY CLOSED THE HOOD SO THAT THE FIRE WOULD NOT SPREAD, CALLED THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND REMOVED THE VEHICLES AROUND IT. THE FIRE DEPT. RESPONDED WITHIN 5 MIN., AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE WITH WATER. THE FIRE DEPT. AND POLICE INSPECTED THE CAR, AND LEFT AFTER IT WAS DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE WAS PROPERLY EXTINGUISHED, AND THERE WAS NO FURTHER RISK OF THE FIRE RE-STARTING. THE FIRE DAMAGE WAS CONFINED TO THE ENTIRE UNDER-HOOD AREA OF THE CAR. WHEN THE EXPLOSION HAPPENED, THE ENGINE COVER AND OIL FILLER CAP WAS BLOWN APPROXIMATELY 5 FT. FROM THE CAR, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS BLOWN OPEN, AND THE FIRE WAS BURNING INSIDE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD. WE ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE CAR INTO THE PARKING SPACE, BUT IT WOULD NOT MOVE. IT SEEMED THE ENGINE HAD SEIZED, PROBABLY AS A RESULT OF THE FIRE. THE CAR HAS SINCE BEEN TOWED TO OUR MECHANIC. THE CAR'S OWNER WAS INSIDE OF THE CAR, ATTEMPTING TO START IT VIA THE IGNITION KEY. I ASKED HER IF THERE WERE ANY PRIOR ISSUES WITH THE CAR, AND SHE TOLD ME THAT AT THE TIME, OTHER THAN A FLAT TIRE AND DEAD BATTERY, THE A/C WAS INOPERATIVE, AND NOT BEING USED. APPROXIMATELY 2-3 YEARS AGO, THE CAR WAS BROUGHT TO A LOCAL DEALER, AND A RECALL ISSUE WAS PERFORMED ON IT. SHE DID NOT REMEMBER WHAT SERVICE AND RECALL REPAIRS WERE DONE ON THE CAR. PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, THE CAR HAD NOT BEEN OPERATED FOR APPROXIMATELY 2 WEEKS. I AM THE PERSON MOST ABLE TO GIVE THE DETAILS OF THE INCIDENT. THE OWNER OF THE CAR (SISTER) HAS AUTHORIZED ME TO ACT ON HER BEHALF IN THIS MATTER. *TR
WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP THE CAR, THE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. SINCE THE CAR WAS GOING ONLY 5-10 MPH, I WAS ABLE TO STOP WITHOUT HITTING ANYTHING. WHEN I CHECKED THE BRAKES, I FOUND THAT THE RIGHT REAR BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH, APPROXIMATELY 4 INCHES TO THE REAR OF THE FUEL FILTER. I HAD BOTH REAR BRAKE LINES REPLACED, FOR THE OTHER WAS RUSTY. *TR
LOUD NOISE FROM STEERING COLUMN WHINING NOISE HEARD THROUGHOUT TURNING MOTION REQUIRES MORE EFFORT FROM DRIVER TO STEER VEHICLE ON TURNS. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2000 CHEVROLET IMPALA. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE THE KEY WAS IN THE START POSITION IT COULD BE REMOVED AND ALL OF THE WARNING LIGHTS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION CORE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 50,000.
ON 1/8/14 AT APPROX. 8:00 AM, I ATTEMPTED TO START MY CAR, I HEARD A LOUD POP OR BANG AND SMELLED SMOKE, I QUICKLY GOT OUT OF THE CAR AND NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE HOOD. I POPPED THE HOOD AND LUCKILY MY NEIGHBOR AND BOYFRIEND HAD COME OUTSIDE AT THIS POINT AND PUT THE "FIRE" THAT HAD STARTED UNDER THE HOOD, OUT WITH SNOW. BASICALLY, I ATTEMPTED TO CRANK THE CAR, THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD DURING THE CRANKING, RESULTING IN AN EXPLOSION AND SMALL FIRE. I CONTACTED GM DIRECTLY ASKING IF THERE WAS A POSSIBLE RECALL THAT WAS SIMILAR TO THE SITUATION THAT HAD OCCURRED. AFTER A SHORT INVESTIGATION, THE CLAIMS REPRESENTATIVE DENIED MY CLAIM STATING THAT MY CAR WAS PROBABLY JUST OLD. IT WAS NOT UNTIL I HEARD ABOUT THE COBALT RECALLS, DID I DECIDE TO DO MORE INVESTIGATIONS. *TR
WHILE ATTEMPTING TO START THE CAR FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, THE CAR STARTED AND RAN FOR ABOUT 15 SECONDS, THEN EXPLODED BUSTING A HOLE THROUGH THE UPPER MANIFOLD INTAKE. *TR

THE CONTACT RECENTLY RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 15V701000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 198,000.
CAR WAS PARKED IN A PARKING GARAGE AND BURST INTO FLAMES. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 250,000.
MY STEERING LOCKS UP WHEN WHEN TURNING MOSTLY LEFT BUT HAS DONE IT WHILE TURNING RIGHT ALSO. WHY IS THERE NOT A RECALL FOR THIS SAFETY ISSUE? *TR
I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING THIS ISSUE FOR OVER 1 YEAR, BUT MY IMPALAS ENGINE WILL JUST STOP RUNNING WHILE IN TRAVEL UP TO 65 MPH CAUSING PROBLEMS WITH INABILITY TO STEER, OR BRAKE WHILE IN TRAFFIC. NUMEROUS REPORTS IN ONLINE SEARCHES HAVE INDICATED THAT THERE ARE MANY IMPALA OWNERS THAT ARE EXPERIENCING THE EXACT SAME ISSUES, BUT ACCORDING TO THEM GM IS NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT THE ISSUE AND THOSE SAME OWNERS ARE ONLY PAYING HIGH SERVICE FEES AT GM DEALERSHIPS WITH THE PROBLEM NEVER BEING FIXED. I SUSPECT THAT IN THE FUTURE MY IMPALA WILL BE INVOLVED IN A COLLISION DUE TO THIS PROBLEM, BUT I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO DRIVE IT AS IT IS. *TR

A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED BACK, NECK AND SHOULDER INJURIES WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CAR HAS A PROBLEM WITH THE PASSLOCK/BCM SYSTEM. I HAVE TRIED NUMEROUS TIMES TO FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE CAR. THE BCM NEEDS REPLACEMENT IT IS A VERY KNOWN AND COMMON PROBLEM THAT GM IS WELL AWARE OF. THE PASSLOCK SYSTEM IN THE IGNITION CYLINDER WILL EITHER GO BAD OR SHORT OUT AND THEN THE BCM WILL SEE IT AS THE CAR IS BEING STOLEN AND THEN SHUT DOWN THE FUEL INJECTIONS AND THE STARTER PREVENTING THE CAR FROM BEING STARTED. I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF DOING THE RELEARN OF THE BCM/IGNITION SO THAT I CAN START MY [XXX] CAR. THE NEEDS TO BE A MAJOR RECALL ON THE CHEVY LINE WITH THE PASS LOCK II SYSTEM INSTALLED IN IT!!!!!! *JS INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
SAW RECENT GM RECALL FOR CHEVY COBALT, SATURNS, ETC. REGARDING ENGINE DYING UNEXPECTEDLY WHILE DRIVING ON THE ROAD (BAD IGNITION SWITCH). MY IMPALA HAS THE SAME SYMPTOM AND IF YOU SEARCH THE INTERNET FOR "WHY DOES IMPALA DIE WHILE DRIVING" IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL. MY IMPALA WILL BE RUNNING SMOOTH, SPEED FROM 30 TO 60, BUT SLOWING DOWN FOR ANY REASON, SOMETIMES THE ENGINE JUST DIES. THIS IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS WHEN SLOWING DOWN FOR A TURN. ALL OF A SUDDEN NO POWER STEERING AND LIMITED BRAKES. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION, I DON'T WANT TO DRIVE THE CAR. THERE IS NO INDICATION LIKE ROUGH ENGINE OR THE CAR STUMBLING FROM LACK OF GAS, IT JUST QUIETLY DIES. IF THIS IGNITION SWITCH IS THE CAUSE, THIS RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED TO INCLUDE IMPALA'S AT LEAST. I CALLED THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND THEY BASICALLY SAID, WELL IT'S A 14 YEAR OLD CAR. NOT THE POINT! MY OLDER CARS DON'T DO THIS. SEARCH THE INTERNET, PEOPLE HAVE TRIED MANY THINGS BUT THE PROBLEM SEEMS TO PERSIST. CHEVROLET HAS TO KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS. *TR
I AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE STEERING OF MY IMPALA WITH LOW MILEAGE. SEVERAL YEARS AGO I WAS NOTIFIED OF A RECALL INVOLVED IN THE IMPALA'S STEERING AND A PART WAS REPLACED AND DURING THAT TIME DEALER ALSO CHANGED OUT THE RACK AND PINION. I BARELY GOT MY VEHICLE HOME ON THURSDAY AND COULD HAVE BEEN IN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT IF I HAD NOT DRIVEN CAUTIOUSLY FOR THE FEW YARDS I HAD TO GO. MY STEERING WAS GONE BUT SOME HOW I GOT MY CAR PARKED SAFELY AT MY APARTMENT AND THE TOW COMPANY HAD TO TOW IT LATER. MY MECHANIC JUST TOLD ME THAT THE RACK AND PINION HAVE FAILED AND THEY WERE JUST REPLACED A FEW YEARS AGO AND SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE SO WITH THE LITTLE MILEAGE MY VEHICLE HAS. THE RACK HAD CAUSED ALL THE FLUID TO LEAK OUT. HOW CAN THAT BE IF IT WAS GOOD MANUFACTURE PARTS THAT WERE PUT IN THE STEERING. HIT A POT HOLE ON THE HIGHWAY. KEY FELL OUT OF THE IGNITION, WAS ABLE TO RETRIEVE THE KEY OFF THE FLOOR AND RESTART THE CAR WHILE DRIVING. I THINK THAT MY KNEE MAY HAVE HIT THE KEY KNOCKING IT INTO THE ACCESSORIES POSITION RESULTING IN THE KEY FALLING OUT OF THE IGNITION. AFTER RESEARCH ONLINE, I FOUND THE FOLLOWING: "THE 3.8-LITER V6 MAY LEAK COOLANT INTO THE ENGINE FROM THE INTAKE MANIFOLD.
