NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
There is a current recall on Chevy impalas with the trans mod control system but my vin number is not apart of the recall but my car is doing everything that recalls states. The recall number is 14V614000. The recall date 10-01-2014. My vehicle is 2014 and I have only had it for 2 years.
Air bags did not deploy in an automotive collision.
My car has had a the side detection modules fail every 1 to 2 years since I've owned the car new in 2014. The dealership has repaired it for free every time now for at least 5 times. Now that the car is not under warranty they refuse to fix it for free. This is a problem with the design and engineering of the car and it is very costly to fix. The problem will continue to occur since the manufacturer refuses to find a permanent solution to the issue. It is related to the placement of the unit and it is affected by the environment and corrodes.
The right turn signal bulb keeps blowing. Break lights were stuck on. I got pulled over because the blinker wasn't working and parking light wouldn't go off. The officer was nice because I had just got the car and didn't give me a ticket, just a warning. Blinker on passenger side won't work with lights on and fuses for that side keeps blowing
Side detection system failures. Repaired side detection systems 2 times ( 2017/2018 and again in 2020) both times GM reimbursed for repairs under technical bulletin. Repairs were supposed to be using “redesigned” parts to prevent issue from reoccurring. Side detection system requires service again in February 2023. That is 3 times this failure has occurred in 8 years of owning this car. I have been told not too drive this vehicle with this issue as more serious issues can happen - dashboard failure, engine issues, etc. which can cause serious issues while driving. Even though GM extended the warranty for this, it doesn’t seem fair that I have to continue to pay repairs for a defective system ….. especially when I cannot drive for safety reasons. If this were just cosmetic, not that bad an issue. But this is a safety concern.
Had a new catalyst converter installed new up steam down steam 02 sensor and it say Catalytic converter system is below threshold bank one had numerous parts put on and the engine light won’t stay off I don’t have a lot of money to keep fixing it the light goe out for a couple days come back on
Electrical wiring problems. Parking light wouldn't go off and clicking noise under dash in front seat
I have a 2014 Chevy Impala LTZ, owned it for 9 years. Just started with issues within the last 6months and it just seems to be getting worst everyday. While making a left turn, not even driving 5mph my power steering fails and the drivers side tires seem to lock up as if the car would be hydro planing. Once it happens the dashboard Alerts come on such as Stabilitrac, Traction Control, ABS, Service Break Assistance, Power Steering, and I lost control of the car in the middle of the road!! Brought the car to the shop they change the wheel bearings. We also changed the brakes in March of this year, we had a front and back realignment plus new tires within the last 6 months. The dealer we got it from is no longer in business, as I did buy it used. I called the Chevrolet 800 number for recalls but no luck finding anything. After searching year/make/model I found similar issues to other "2014 Chevy" within the last couple of years. This is a serious issue and it can become dangerous while driving with my family in the car. I can't afford another vehicle as this car is my reliable vehicle.
Gages are going up and down. All lights keep coming on and appears to dying while driving. Turns dignals do not work when this is happening. My car has been with dealer (2298 Crain Hwy. Waldorf, MD 20601) for two weeks. As of Jan 3, 2023. They are offering to replace the chassis however not following the notified recall. Insisting that I pay...
I was driving in a snowstorm and all of the sudden the ABS, Stabilitrak, and power steering went out. I'm frustrated that this is the 2nd electrical safety issue that I have experienced. Both of which have been reported by several drivers and still no recalls!
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while his wife was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle experienced a loss of power steering assist with the EPS, stability track, and several unknown warning lights illuminated. Additionally, the steering wheel was stiff while making turns. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V450000 (Steering). The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.
This car has exactly the same issues as reported in 15V465000 but Chevrolet refuses to acknowledge that this VIN should have been in their recall. The AOS systems in this Impala is improperly calibrated. My child in the front seat could be seriously injured. Chevrolet themselves verified this 2014 Impala has front vented-heated passenger seats. They still refuse to help in any way. This car does not turn the front passenger airbag on and off when it detects (or fails to detect) an adult occupant in that seat.
passenger airbag lights stays on even when its no one in the seat, also the blind side warning does not work with the already know defective sensors. need fix to ensure my safety of me and my family
Car turned off while driving and lost Al power
When getting of the exit from the high way my steering wheel locked up. We were going about 40-50 getting into a slow speed from the highway. I struggled with turning the wheel just to get off of the ramp. And then a sign came up saying service power steering drive with care. It’s showing that my vehicle doesn’t have a recall for this. But this is absolutely not safe at all. I had my 2 infants and 7 year old in the vehicle.
Electrical issues, radio volume disappears for a short period of time, turn signal audible noise disappears at same time radio volume stops, power sterring assist stops working for short time, sterring issue repaired in 2016 but doing again, ac cooling stops working for short time period, off and on, seems to be some type of electrical issue with the vehicle, purchased new in 2014, only 32,000 mile on car at present, every time taken to dealer will not reproduce the problem, called GM states recall 14515 is not part of my car, i question that in that this recall is for electrical issues. can not seem to get any furthur with anyone on this issue
When pulling up to a stoplight the car would often downshift, surge with power, and nearly overpower the brakes. The car started losing oil from its rear main seal. When I finally had the seal replaced the repair shop found that pieces of the thrust bearing were laying in the oil pan. The engine and transmission had to be removed from the vehicle in order to replace the thrust bearing. They showed me a box full of parts, but I did not keep any.
Due to a poor electrical ground connection to the power steering control module, the vehicle has been losing power steering assist during start up and while driving; this requires much greater effort for me to steer the vehicle even at low speeds, and is increasing the risk of a crash for me and my family.
Was driving when the service power steering message came on no code to be read on it unable to drive or turn.
The message can on in the car "side detection system " when I cut the car off and got back in, it was gone off. Later that night I got back in the car to go somewhere and the car wouldn't start. And every time I try starting it want.
POWER STEERING ISSUE.. WAS A RECALL WITH THIS MODEL VEHICLE BACK IN 2014.. CAR HAS ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING AND ITS AFFECTING MY STEERING ON MY CAR
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated while driving 55 MPH, the vehicle lost power steering assist without warning. The contact used excessive force to steer the vehicle to the side of the highway. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed her that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V450000 (Steering) prior to her owning the vehicle. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was unknown. The VIN was not available.
I have taken it in on several occasions and been told there is no active code. My transmission control module constantly looses communication. Through my research I have found numerous accounts of this part failing and GM not repairing it, nor issuing a safety recall. I took the vehicle in and was told it was a common failure. The failure of this part has put myself and my children in danger, the computer failure causes the car to randomly shift gears while driving jerk violently and completely shut off at times. Currently it is stuck in 1 gear. I am a single parent, I am scared to travel with my children in the car, anywhere including school and medical appointments. This issue happens while driving the vehicle at all speeds including highway speeds. The last time I took it in the dealer stated, the vehicle was not safe to drive they notified my warranty company, which took 2 weeks to look at the vehicle at which time I was told that the fault code was not active but only in the history of the computer and they refused to repair it. Being that this is a known issue by GM I believe a safety recall should be issue before someone is hurt or killed, if they havent been already. The service advisor informed me that they were instructed to clear the codes from my OBD let the car sit and see if the issue returned. This issue has affected multiple GM vehicles yet they refuse to make the repair necessary to make the vehicle safe. questions; 1)TCM fails, yes it is available for inspection. 2) vehicle randomly shifts through gears including park, at all speeds. causing car to jerk violently, shut off or get stuck in 1 gear. It has shut off while traveling at 75 MPH on the high with my children in the car on multiple occasions. 3)yes at covert chevy in hutto, tx. even the service department was scared to drive it. 4) I dont know what the dealer inspected. 5)yes service stabilitrack and power steering and check engine light with code U0101
Driving at night my car headlights/instrument panel shut off on their own. I couldn’t see had to slam my brakes and pull over. Nothing I tried would turn them on. After almost a minute each time they just came back on theirselves. After googling this seems to be a known problem with Chevy impalas but no solution. This is highly dangerous. There were no warning lights that came on or anything. I was able to still drive the car, turn it on and off, etc but they wouldn’t come on until they did on their own. Thank goodness no one was behind me or something in front of me cause I was on a none lighted 55 mph road
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while reversing, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure reoccurred increasingly while driving the following day. The message "Service Power Steering" was displayed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the steering position sensor was recalibrated; however, the failure persisted. The dealer diagnosed that the steering gear needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as an unknown recall repair had previously been completed on the vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated while driving approximately 55 MPH, the steering wheel became firm. The power steering assist warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 167,000.
Cross traffic sensors have failed at less than 80K miles but over the covered 6 year coverage. Renders the sensors inoperable and blocks other information the cluster.

Bad wiring harnesses causing brakes and antilock brakes to throw codes and fail. Abs and stable track fail and also cause car to suddenly go to low engine power mode while driving down highway. Replaced nearly every brake component plus vehicle computers and abs modules. Vehicle now throwing new codes serious at random. Main pcm computer replaced twice. Abs, brake booster, abs modular, master cylinder, 4 calipers, hoses, abs module and abs valve assembly all these components replaced twice at least. Vehicle was not a flood car.
Side detection module malfunction. Causing electrical issues and error codes. When happening Headlights Turn on and off without control. Huge safety problem when driving at night!
The air bags from the passenger is not ON. The button on top turns on when a passenger sits .
While driving on straight paved road, service steering system light came on and lost power steering assist. Was able to get home with a lot of effort.
Side Detection Modules failed due to water intrusion. Verified by Lynch Chevrolet Mukwonago Wi Service Dept. No warnings. Just system failed Chevy will not replace under previous service bulletin. Want me to pay for full replacement.
51,000 miles. System has failed three times. first two covered by Warranty. Not under warranty now. There are numerous complaints about this problem. It will now cost me up to two thousand to repair. car is at risk of fire, failure to start and other major electrical problems. Dealer wants $140 to diagnose, I am afraid to drive this car.
While driving, I lost steering. My stabilitrac sensor came in. I had OnStar run a diagnostic in the car and they confirmed it was the stabilitrac.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle in the driveway the message "power steering failure" had suddenly displayed and the steering wheel became very difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the steering rack had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the VIN was not included in the NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V450000 (Steering). The contact indicated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 170,000.
Started getting service side detection system warnings. Learned there has been a problem with this blind spot system. GM fixed it until Jan 2020 they say expired and my mileage was too high v problem just started last week of Feb 2022. 134k miles on it. Everything ran great but there are warnings from 2 years ago of dangerous repercussions from this defect. They won’t fix it and we can’t afford to have them fix it. I never got any notice of the problem from GM.
Multiple electric concerns...airbag light, park assist, inop camera, and losing communication with BCM(?) Found multiple communication codes for a variety of different modules. Found main source to be from the "side detection modules". Found fuse 62 blown underhood. Inspected side detection modules and found "a lot of corrosion" on both modules and connectors. Needs side detection kit. I purchased the used impala on 12/19/2020 with 63,897 miles. The first time this issue was a concern was on 07/02/2022 at Merit chevrolet (MN). Mileage was at 83144 at that time. Diagnosis ... recommend both rear side detection modules and harness? According to Special coverage adjustment #N172097060 it is known to be subject to "water intrusion"? This problem affects the whole electrical system which includes airbag function. Why does this safety concern have a limited coverage time? According to the "Special Coverage" document, there was an 80000 mile timeline? This appears to be an ongoing issue with this year, make, and model and my feeling is that a "special coverage" is denying the safety problem and putting it on the consumer?
My blind spot light on my side mirror was flickering, and now it just stays on. I read online that the sensor in the bumper can overheat, causing a fire, but Chevrolet doesn't have a recall on it. I ended up shutting off the blind spot sensor option on my car. I utilize the sensors, especially on the highway when I travel. There hasn't been a warning light go on as of yet.
I've gotten my stabiltrac serviced and it came back on
The electronic parking brake fails to disengage entirely from the rear brake pads causing them to become welded together. This results in extreme heat, excess brake dust, poor acceleration, and caliper / brake line (air) issues.
Power steering

Yes, morries forest lake chevrolet and cadilac.forest lake. mn... no it has not been inspected by anyone but the dealer...There were no warning lights untill 51,000 miles or 8 months ago
While driving the car electrical system will lose all power and reset. This happens often.
The service power steering came in on the dash, also along with service stabiltrak and the abs light heard these are common and play together , mainly the service power steering which caused the vehicle to be become almost impossible to steer I heard there where recalls on this same situation as it is a huge safety concern . It makes it very dangerous in highway or roads as it is very hard to steer
While driving 45 mph, my car jerked and several lights came on in my dashboard including the light with the little wrench . In my dashboard, it displayed the message to check stabili track and steering power system and to drive with care. My car then started loosing power to accelerate. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership the next day and they stated that they cleared the codes but didn’t tell me what the codes were and they kept my vehicle for 5 days and said they couldn’t get the vehicle to act up. Now this issue has happened again and a message in my dashboard is saying to check the power steering and drive with care. I had no warning signs prior to this issue.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that while driving at 50 MPH, the “Service Power Steering” message was displayed. The contact stated that he was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist because the VIN was not included in any recalls. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V450000 (Steering) because the VIN was not included in the recall. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving and the steering was difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000.
When I’m driving and slow down my key will turn itself off making the car itself shut off
Vehicle is available for inspection upon request. Brake booster not regulating properly. This is causing the vehicle to not stop at a timely manner and a need to push brake all the way down for vehicle to eventually stop which is unsafe when driving. This has been confirmed by independent service center which has recommended to search for recall. No warnings or messages prior to issue.
