WHILE PULLING IN THE DRIVEWAY, I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND HAD VERY LITTLE BRAKING. I HAD TO APPLY EMERGENCY BRAKE TO KEEP FROM HITTING GARAGE. INSPECTION REVEALED THE FRONT BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED THROUGH AND WAS LEAKING. *TR

TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 15 MPH, THE ANTI-BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED PERIODICALLY. AS OF APRIL 2, 2010, THE ABS LIGHT WOULD NOT TURN OFF. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALERSHIP WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE APPROXIMATELY 84,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD PICKUP. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE BRAKING FROM SPEEDS OF 5 MPH, A VEHICLE CRASHED INTO THE REAR OF HIS VEHICLE, CAUSING HIS VEHICLE TO CRASH INTO THE VEHICLE AHEAD OF HIM. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED BUT DID NOT ENGAGE AND THE FRONT AND REAR OF HIS VEHICLE SUSTAINED SUBSTANTIAL BODY DAMAGE. THE DEALER WOULD NOT PROVIDE ANY ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 130,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 134,000.

2001 CHEVY SILVERADO. ODOMETER 56K. 3/20/10 TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE. BRAKES, CALIPERS, FRONT TO REAR BRAKE LINES REPLACED. RUSTED LINES. 7/24/10 FOUR MONTHS AFTER, REPEATED BRAKE FAILURE. TOTALLY BLEW REAR BRAKES. CURRENTLY AT DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. AVOIDED A COLLISION. EXPENSIVE, AND POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS. NEEDS A SAFETY RECALL ON THIS DEFECT. *TR
SILVERADO BRAKING IS SOFT AND SOMETIMES APPEARS TO BE ENGAGE WITH FRONT END TRANSFER, THAT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE, IT COULD BE FAULTY SENSOR THAT ACTIVATES THE ABS SYSTEM. NOT SURE... *TR
THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING DOWN A RAMP TO HIGHWAY 41. POWER BRAKES AND STEERING DID NOT WORK AS THE ENGINE WAS DEAD. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE CRANKED REPEATEDLY TO GET IT TO RESTART. THIS WAS THE FIRST INCIDENT THAT I REMEMBER, BUT IT HAPPENED AGAIN MANY TIMES OVER THE YEARS WITHOUT WARNING. FINALLY THIS YEAR AFTER SOME RESEARCH I FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY CRANK POSITION SENSOR. I LEARNED THERE WAS A RECALL (NHTSA - EA06016) FOR THIS BUT GM SAID MY VEHICLE WAS NOT COVERED BY IT EVEN THOUGH IT WAS THE SAME PROBLEM IDENTIFIED IN THE RECALL. I HAVE READ REPORTS OF OTHERS THAT HAD THE SAME FAILURE BUT GM HAS REFUSED TO FIX SAYING THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. I BELIEVE THE RECALL SHOULD BE EXPANDED AS THIS IS A SERIOUS PROBLEM THAT COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WAS REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN SOLVED. I HAVE THE OLD SENSOR IF NEEDED FOR TESTING.
I HAVE A 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICKUP WITH ANTILOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THE ABS COMPUTER MODULE HAS FAILED TWICE SINCE I HAVE HAD IT. YOU CAN TELL IT IS NOT WORKING WHEN THE SYSTEM CONTINUALLY PUMPS THE BRAKES EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE IS TURNED OFF. THE MODULE COSTS $800-$1000 AND I CANNOT AFFORD TO REPLACE IT AGAIN. I CALLED CHEVROLET TO REPORT THE PROBLEM AND TOOK IT UP THEIR CHAIN OF COMPLAINTS AS FAR AS I COULD GET ANYONE TO LISTEN TO ME. THE BEST THEY WOULD OFFER AS A RESOLUTION WAS A COUPON FOR $500 OFF A NEW PICKUP TRUCK. I PULLED THE MODULE TO STOP THE CONTINUOUS PUMPING. AND MY DASHBOARD BRAKE WARNING LIGHT AND THE ABS WARNING LIGHTS STAY ON CONTINUALLY. MY BRAKES STILL FUNCTION, BUT THE ABS SAFETY SYSTEM DOES NOT AID THEM. I REPORTED THIS PROBLEM TO NTSB THE FIRST TIME THE MODULE FAILED AND GOT NO REPLY AND THIS IS THE SECOND MODULE TO FAIL ON THIS TRUCK. MY MECHANIC SAY HE DOES NOT UNDERSTAND WHY THERE HAS NOT BEEN A RECALL BECAUSE HE HAS SEEN THIS MANY TIMES ON 2001 SILVERADO. IT IS A SAFETY CONCERN BECAUSE ABS WON'T FUNCTION WITHOUT THE MODULE WORKING PROPERLY. *TR
2001 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 HD 50,000 MILES HYDRAULIC BRAKE LINES ARE EXCESSIVELY RUSTED AND HAVE FAILED I AM NOW IN THE PROCESS OF HAVING TO REPLACE ALL BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER TO THE WHEELS. BRAKE LINES BROKE WHEN COMING TO A STOP. FRAME IS ALSO EXCESSIVELY RUSTED. IN NOVEMBER 2009 ALL ALLISON TRANSMISSION LINE WERE RUSTED THROUGH AND ALSO NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AS WELL AS THE COOLER COIL. *TR
ABS FAILURE. I TURNED IN MY 01 1500 SILVERADO (94K MILES)BACK IN 07 FOR THE INITIAL BRAKE RECALL. THE DEALERSHIP CLEANED THE SENSOR AND I HAVEN'T HAD A PROBLEM TILL MARCH 2010. THE ABS IS NONE STOP NOW,IT WAS NOT A GRADUAL GROWING PROBLEM MY BRAKES JUST STOPPED WORKING. IF IM GOING ABOUT 10-20MPH AND DO NOT SLAM ON THE BRAKES THE ABS SETS OFF AND THE TRUCK JUST SLIDES TILL I PUMP THE BRAKES AND GET VEHICLE TO STOP. I HAVE USED A FEW CANS OF BRAKE CLEANER ON THE FRONT BRAKES AND IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR A WEEK OR TWO BUT THERE NEEDS TO BE A PERMANENT SOLUTION. *TR
2001 SILVERADO BRAKE LINES COMPLETELY RUSTED-BRAKES WENT TO FLOOR. LOOKED UP CHEVY TRUCK BRAKES ONLINE AND FOUND AN ASTONISHING AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED! BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO RUST THROUGH ON 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500HD LED TO LOSS OF BRAKING AND NEARLY AN ACCIDENT. THE RESULTING LOSS OF THE VEHICLE FOR SEVERAL DAYS WHILE THE BRAKE LINES HAD TO BE COMPLETELY REPLACED AT A COST OF APPROXIMATELY $2000. *TR
BRAKE LINES FAILED ON MY 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO. MY SON WAS DRIVING, BUT WAS ABLE TO STOP OK WITH THE BRAKE PEDAL TO THE FLOOR. I HAD TO HAVE ALL THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED AS THEY WERE RUSTED TOO BADLY TO REPAIR. THIS COST ME A LOT OF MONEY AND THANKFULLY NO ONE WAS INJURED. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED AND THE BATTERY WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE CONTACT STATED THAT AFTER 10 TO 15 SECONDS THE VEHICLE WOULD START AND PERFORM AS IF THE FAILURE NEVER OCCURRED. THE VEHICLE ALSO STALLED AT A COMPLETE STOP AND AT TIMES THE VEHICLE FAILED TO RESTART. THE DEALER WAS CONTACTED AND STATED THAT HIS VIN WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER: 07V521000, ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING. THE FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED BY A MECHANIC STATING THAT IT WAS THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR THAT WAS FAULTY. NO REPAIRS WERE MADE WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 56000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61900.
I HAVE A 2001 CHEVROLET 2500 SERIES TRUCK WITH AN 8.1 LITER ENGINE. I HAVE EXPERIENCED SEVERAL ENGINE STALLS WHILE DRIVING. AFTER A FEW MINUTES THE ENGINE WOULD RESTART. SINCE THE VEHICLE IS OFF WARRANTY AND I DO NOT HAVE A LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER I HAD AN INDEPENDENT AUTO REPAIR SHOP ATTEMPT TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. THE COMPUTER WAS NOT PRODUCING CODES AND DIAGNOSIS WAS NOT POSSIBLE. AFTER SEVERAL ATTEMPTS OVER A FEW WEEKS A CODE WAS FINALLY PICKED UP INDICATING A "CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR FAILURE" WHICH IS OCCURRING INTERMITTENTLY. I THEN DISCOVERED THAT GM HAD RECALLED MANY VEHICLES DUE TO THIS PROBLEM AND REPLACED THE SENSOR AS RECENTLY AS LAST YEAR. I CONTACTED GM ONLY TO FIND THAT EVEN THOUGH THE SYMPTOMS OF MY VEHICLE ARE IDENTICAL TO THOSE RECALLED, MY VIN # IS A FEW OUT OF THE RECALL SEQUENCE BUT GM MAY CONSIDER REPLACING MY SENSOR IF I GET A DIAGNOSIS AT A GM DEALERSHIP. HEREIN LIES MY PROBLEM. DUE TO THE INTERMITTENT NATURE OF THE FAILURE, DIAGNOSIS IS DIFFICULT. IT IT DOES NOT OCCUR WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP I MUST DRIVE IT UNTIL ANOTHER TIME. I LIVE 35 MILES FROM THE DEALERSHIP AND TRAVEL EVEN FURTHER FROM THERE OFTEN. WHEN THE ENGINE STALLS I LOSE STEERING AND BRAKES. I AM RELUCTANT TO CONTINUE DRIVING BACK AND FORTH TO THE DEALERSHIP HOPING IT DOES NOT STALL IN TRAFFIC AS IT HAS IN THE PAST BUT STALLS AT A POINT THAT PRODUCES A CODE FOR THE DEALERSHIP. I HAVE A CODE DIAGNOSIS FROM AN INDEPENDENT SHOP AND I JUST WANT THIS SAFETY ISSUE RESOLVED JUST LIKE GM DID WITH THOUSANDS OF OTHER 2001 CHEVROLET 2500 TRUCKS UNDER RECALL #06083. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHENEVER THE CONTACT WOULD APPLY THE BRAKES AT A LOW SPEED THE ABS WHEEL SENSOR WOULD ACTIVATE INCREASING THE STOPPING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THE CONTACT HAD THE FRONT ABS WHEEL SENSOR REPLACED. THERE WERE NO PRIOR WARNINGS. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 90,000.
IN 2005 A RECALL WAS ISSUED FOR CERTAIN MODELS OF THE CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THIS RECALL WAS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ABS SPEED SENSORS. AT SLOW SPEEDS THE ABS SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE CAUSING EXTENDED STOPPING PERIODS. THIS PROBLEM OCCURS EACH AND EVERY TIME THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED. THE CONSEQUENCES ARE AN UNWANTED INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE WHICH CAN LEAD TO TRAGEDY. TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM DEALERS WERE INSTRUCTED TO REMOVE THE WHEEL SPEED SENSORS, CLEAN THE MOUNTING SURFACE, AND RE-INSTALL. NO PARTS WERE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. IN THIS CASE THE RECALL PROCESS WAS PERFORMED AT APPROXIMATELY 65,000 MILES AND THE PROBLEM RE-OCCURRED AT APPROXIMATELY 89,000 MILES. GENERAL MOTORS WAS CONTACTED AND UNWILLING TO ASSIST IN ANY WAY. THIS PROBLEM WAS NOT FIXED PROPERLY DURING THE RECALL. THE SOLUTION WAS ONLY A TEMPORARY FIX AND THE PROBLEM CONTINUES TO RE-OCCUR ENDANGERING THE SAFETY OF ALL MOTORISTS. *TR
SUDDEN LOSS OF BRAKES ON 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500. ALL BRAKE LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED, FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM A GROUP OF LINES TO THE HCU. REMOVED ALL RUSTED BRAKE LINES AND BRAKE COMPONENTS. REPLACED 5 BRAKE LINES, CALIPER, BRAKE HOSE, & FLUID. COST = $ 1369.21. *TR

ON JANUARY 9TH I WAS DRIVING ON ROUTE 601, MILE MARKER 19,@ 45 MPH WHEN MY TIRE SEPARATED AND DISINTEGRATED WITH ONLY 25,000 MILES ON THEM. THE TIRE DAMAGED THE WHEEL WELL AND TRUCK BODY. TIRE: P265/75R16 114T M+S LONG TRAIL T/A, SKU# 4121-786, BFGOODRICH. I SPUN AROUND 180 DEGREES AND FORTUNATELY MY WIFE AND I WERE SAFE WITH ONLY MINER DISCOMFORT IN NECK AND BACK AREAS. *TR

WHEN THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO STOP THE VEHICLE, IT FAILED TO STOP. THE DEALER ADVISED THE CONTACT THAT A RELATED RECALL WAS STATE SPECIFIC. THE CHEVROLET MANUFACTURER ALSO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 84,000.
FUEL GAUGE INSIDE FOR THIS TRUCK CONTINUES TO GO TO 0 THEN JUMPS ALL OVER / GOES BACK TO HALF FULL THEN RETURNS TO THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF GAS IN THE TANK ALL THE TIME. *TR
BRAKES FAILED AND COST REPAIRS OF $2,000.00. FAILURE BY EXCESSIVE RUST. I PURCHASED MY 2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD 3/4 TON SILVERADO NEW 9/2001 FROM QUILGY'S CHEVROLET IN BALLY, PA. IT HAS BEEN GARAGED EVERYDAY AND HAS ONLY 2,700 MILES. *TR
CHEVY 2001 2500HD - I HAVE JUST OVER 25,000 MILES ON IT. AT 16,000 MILES I HAD TO REPLACE ALL THE ROTORS, ETC. BECAUSE OF RUST AND PITTING. THIS PAST SATURDAY, I RETURNED FROM A SHORT ERRAND AND I NOTICED SOMETHING DRIPPING FROM THE UNDERCARRIAGE IN MY DRIVEWAY. I CRAWLED UNDER AND NOTICE HOW PITTED AND CORRODED THE BRAKE LINES WERE. IT APPEARED THAT BRAKE FLUID WAS OOZING FROM THE LINES. LATER, I PUSHED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL TO SEE HOW BAD THE LINES WOULD BLEED AGAIN AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR - I COULD FEEL THE PRESSURE RELEASE - LIKE SOMETHING RUPTURED IN THE BRAKE SYSTEM. FORTUNATELY, I WAS IN MY DRIVEWAY AND NOT DRIVING AT THE TIME. *TR

ON A SATURDAY 11/21/2009 I WAS DRIVING MY 201 CHEVROLET SILVERADO {59,021 MILES} DOWN A DIRT INCLINE WHICH LEADS TO A POND.WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES ,THERE WERE NO BRAKES AT ALL, AND I KEEP GOING WHILE MY FOOT WAS HOLDING THE BRAKES DOWN , UNTIL MY TRUCK'S FRONT TIRES WERE IN THE PONDS WATER. AS I ENTERED THE WATER THE BRAKES FINALLY TOOK HOLD AND I STOPPED. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL CLEAR DAY WITHOUT ANY ICE OR SNOW. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IT HAS HAPPENED~ THE FIRST WAS ABOUT 11/2003 I WAS HAVING BRAKE PROBLEMS {THE BRAKES WOULD CHATTER WHEN APPLIED}SO I BROUGHT THE TRUCK TO A CHEVROLET DEALER TO CK. THE BRAKES THIS WAS ON 12/01/2003. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT CALLED A FEW DAYS LATER AND SAID THE MECHANIC HAD A ACCIDENT WITH THE TRUCK, HE WAS BRING IT INTO THE GARAGE AND HE HAD GONE RIGHT THROUGH THE CLOSED GARAGE DOORS BECAUSE OF A BRAKE FAILURE. THE DEALER AT THIS POINT CALLED GENERAL MOTORS AND REPORTED THE PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKES {NOT STOPPING & GOING THROUGH THE CLOSED DOORS}DAMAGE WAS DONE AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE BUG DEFLECTOR,BUMPER CAP , FRONT GRILL & REPAIRED AND PAINTED THE HOOD. THEY ALSO REPLACED THE ~WHEEL SENSORS ~TELLING US THAT THIS WAS THE PROBLEM. WE HAD NO USE OF THE TRUCK FOR ABOUT 6WK. THE TRUCK WAS RETURNED TO US WITHOUT CHARGE. WERE AFRAID TO DRIVE THIS TRUCK NOW FEARING SOMEONE WILL BE INJURED OR KILLED BECAUSE WE ARE NEVER SURE WHEN THIS BRAKE FAILURE WILL HAPPEN AGAIN. WE HAVE CALLED GM THEY MADE AN APPOINTMENT WITH A CHEVROLET DEALER BUT THEY REFUSED TO PAY FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST TO CONFIRM THE BRAKE FAILURE . *TR

ABS ACTIVATES AT LOW SPEED, 5-10MPH, ON DRY PAVEMENT. THIS EXTENDS THE STOPPING DISTANCE. HAPPENS MORE THAN 50% OF THE TIME WHEN STOPPING. SAME CONDITION AS DESCRIBED IN CAMPAIGN NUMBER 05V379000. *TR

THE VEHICLE RESTARTED AND RESUMED NORMAL OPERATION. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENT. THE VEHICLE IS IN THE PROCESS OF BEING TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2001 CHEVROLET PICKUP C1500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 2 MPH INTO A PARKING LOT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM FAILED TO OPERATE NORMALLY. THE CONTACT HAD DIFFICULTY STOPPING THE VEHICLE WHEN THE BRAKES WERE APPLIED. THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO OVERRIDE THE ABS BY APPLYING EXTREME FORCE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE ONTO A CURB. THE CONTACT WAS FORCED TO SHUT THE ENGINE OFF TO RESET THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. THE FAILURE OCCURRED ON TWO OCCASIONS PRIOR TO BEING DIAGNOSED BY THE DEALER. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR WAS CORRODED AND CHARGED HIM $200 TO CLEAN IT; HOWEVER, THE FAILURE COULD RECUR IF THE WHEEL SENSORS BECOME CORRODED. THE VEHICLE IS CURRENTLY OPERATING NORMALLY. THE FIRST FAILURE OCCURRED ON OCTOBER 17TH AND 18TH OF 2009. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 69,000.
2001 CHEVY SILVERADO K2500 BRAKE FAILURE. DRIVING HOME ON A COUNTRY BLACKTOP ROAD, ROAD WET FROM RAIN BUT VISIBILITY GOOD. APPROACHING A 45 MPH CURVE I APPLIED THE BRAKES. THE PEDAL WAS SOFT AND WENT TO THE FLOOR QUICKLY. THE TRUCK FRONT TIRES HAD NO BRAKES AND THE REARS LOCKED UP. THE TRUCK WENT INTO A 360 SPIN AND OFF THE ROAD AT APPROX. 50 MPH. THE TRUCK WENT DOWN AN EMBANKMENT AND INTO A SWAMPY AREA. UPON INSPECTION THE BRAKE LINES TO THE FRONT WHEELS HAD BLOWN OUT AND WERE EXTREMELY CORRODED. THE TIRE DEALER THAT THE CONTACT PURCHASED THE TIRES FROM CONFIRMED THAT THERE WERE NO EXISTING RECALLS. THE CONTACT HAS NOT NOTIFIED THE MANUFACTURER AND THE VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. BESIDE THE FACT THAT ONE WOULD THINK A 9 YEAR OLD TRUCK'S BRAKE LINE WOULD BE THE LAST THING TO WORRY ABOUT, THE ROCKER PANELS THAT WILL COST 5-6 THOUSAND TO FIX ACCORDING TO MACO HAVE ALSO FAILED AND HAVE RUSTED AWAY TO NEAR NOTHING. MY 2001 CHEVY WITH THE 8100 ENGINE WOULD STALL AT SPEED AND ALSO AT IDLE. THE AT-SPEED STALL WOULD RESTART ON ITS OWN WITHIN 3 OR 4 SECONDS. THERE WERE NO SES INDICATORS BEING SHOWN. THE SECOND ENGINE FAILURE OCCURRED ON MY WAY HOME. I WAS A TRAVELING ALONG STATE ROUTE 35 WHICH IS A DIVIDED HIGHWAY BUT HAS A GREAT DEAL OF TRAFFIC ON IT. THIS HIGHWAY ALSO HAS SEVERAL STOP LIGHTS IN THE AREA OF BEAVERCREEK OHIO. I HAD STOPPED AT A RED LIGHT AND WHEN I STARTED TO ACCELERATE THE ENGINE SUDDENLY DIED. TRAFFIC BEHIND ME HAD STARTED TO ACCELERATE BUT SUDDENLY HAD TO TAKE EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID HITTING MY STALLED VEHICLE. THE GROUP OF TRAFFIC THAT WAS BEHIND ME WAS ABLE TO GET AROUND ME LEAVING ME SITTING DEAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY WITH MY 4-WAY FLASHERS ON. FURTHER TRAFFIC WAS NOT PAYING ATTENTION AND ALMOST REAR ENDED ME WHILE I WAS STALLED. I PUSHED THIS 6,700 LBS. 4X4 TRUCK OFF THE HIGHWAY MYSELF TO THE SHOULDER AND WAS NEARLY HIT A COUPLE OF TIME DURING THE PROCESS. AFTER A VERY LONG COOL DOWN PERIOD, THE ENGINE FINALLY RESTARTED. THIS TIME THERE WAS AN SES INDICATOR AND I PROCEEDED TO DRIVE TO AUTOZONE WHERE THEY SAID IT WAS THE 'CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR' FAILURE. OUR 2001 CHEVY K2500 HD WAS PARKED, W/PARK BRAKE ON, AT THE TOP OF A MNT. PLATEAU WHEN IT ROLLED OFF THE TOP W/A 5 YR OLD BOY IN THE BED OF THE TRUCK, GOING 500 YDS BEFORE COMING TO A STOP. I FIRST RECEIVED RECALL NOTICE FOR ABS BRAKE SYSTEM ON 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO IN 2005. IMMEDIATELY TOOK VEHICLE TO DEALERSHIP ON 11/1/05 AND HAD BRAKES "FIXED", WHICH WAS SIMPLY CLEANING THE ABS SPEED SENSOR. MILEAGE WAS 61,911. THEN ON 9/11/09 MY WIFE WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPACE AT OUR SUPERMARKET AT LOW SPEED (3-4 MILES PER HOUR). BRAKES FAILED AND TRUCK CONTINUED FORWARD AND STRUCK THE FRONT OF A PARKED VEHICLE, WHICH IN TURN WAS PUSHED BACKWARD HITTING A WOMAN PUTTING GROCERIES IN HER TRUNK. THE WOMAN WAS KNOCKED TO THE GROUND AND MAY HAVE BEEN INJURED. TOOK TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY AND THEY AGAIN "FIXED" BRAKES. THIS TIME IT WAS AT MY EXPENSE OF $447. MILEAGE WAS 100,670. I THEN BEGAN TO SEARCH THE INTERNET AND FOUND THIS IS A COMMON FAILURE MODE WITH GM TRUCKS THAT HAVE THE 8.1 L ENGINE FROM THIS PERIOD AND THAT A SAFETY RECALL (07V521000) WAS DONE ON CERTAIN VIN NUMBERS TO REPLACE A DEFECTIVE OEM CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR. WHAT WAS DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE;, AT THIS TIME NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO CORRECT THE FAILURE AND THE TRUCK IS NOT BEING USED. I STARTED THE TRUCK, PUT IT INTO DRIVE AND PROCEEDED TO THE END OF MY ALLEY. I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH WENT DOWN MORE THEN NORMAL AND THE TRUCK DID NOT STOP UNTIL I APPLIED MORE PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL WHICH CAUSED THE REAR WHEELS TO SKID AND STOP THE TRUCK, I CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY REVERSED THE TRUCK BACK INTO THE DRIVE WAY AND PARKED IT. THERE WAS A WET SPOT IN THE ALLEY THAT UPON INSPECTION WAS BRAKE FLUID. LOOKING UNDER THE TRUCK THERE WAS BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM A RUSTED THRU BRAKE LINE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE TRUCK UNDER ABOUT WHERE YOUR LEFT FOOT WOULD BE WHILE SITTING IN THE TRUCK. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO THE CHEVY DEALER TO BE REPAIRED. THE SERVICE ADVISOR TOLD ME BRAKE LINE FAILURE IS NOT UNCOMMON IN THE VINTAGE TRUCK. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TOLD ME MINE WAS THE 3RD TUCK HE TOWED TODAY WITH THE SAME CONDITION. I DO NOT WANT THIS INCIDENT REPORT TO REFLECT BADLY ON THE DEALERSHIP WHO HAS ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. BURSTING BRAKE LINES ON THE HIGHWAY CAUSES ME GREAT CONCERN.
