I HAD A COOLER ON MY TAILGATE, WHEN I WENT TO CLIMB INTO MY BED BY STEPPING ON THE TAILGATE, BOTH CABLES SUPPORTING THE TAILGATE SNAPPED, SENDING ME AND THE COOLER ONTO THE GROUND. *CB
RELATED: PE03057 I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING PREMATURE BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR FAILURES WITH MY 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. I HAVE THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, BUT HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM WITH DRAGGING EMERGENCY BRAKE SHOES THAT IS DESCRIBED IN THE ABOVE REFERENCED NHSTA ACTION NUMBER. I'M ABOUT TO REPLACE THE ENTIRE REAR BRAKE SYSTEM FOR THE SECOND TIME. THE DEALER SAID THERE WAS NOTHING UNUSUAL ABOUT THIS. I BEG TO DIFFER. PLEASE TAKE THIS INTO CONSIDERATION FOR FURTHER ACTION. I HAVE A 2001 CHEVROLET C3500 PICKUP, I AM A TRAILER PULLER FOR FEMA WHILE WORKING IN CA, AND DRIVING DOWN A STEEP MOUNTAIN SIDE WHEN I APPLIED MY BRAKES, MY POWER STEERING WENT OUT ALSO MY POWER BRAKES BECAME REAL HARD . LATER I CALLED MY DEALERSHIP TALKED WITH A TECHNICIAN, I WAS INFORMED THAT THEY WERE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH POWER STEERING PUMPS, I REMOVED MINE, FOUND HALF BROKEN, AFTER REPLACING POWER STEERING PUMP, STEERING AND BRAKES RETURNED TO NORMAL. *LA

THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE CALIPER WAS STICKING USING ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE BRAKE PAD. AS A RESULT A GRINDING NOISE WAS PRODUCED. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
POOR BREAKING. PREMATURE DETERIORATING OF BRAKE ROTORS (40,000 MILES.) THE SURFACE OF THE ROTORS WHERE THE PADS MAKE CONTACT APPEARED TO FLAKE AWAY, LEAVING A SMALLER CONTACT WITH THE PADS. HAVE PICTURES OF ROTORS AND THE ROTORS FOR INSPECTION.*AK

ACCELERATOR STICKING IN THE UP POSITION
WHEN LOADING THE TRUCK TAILGATE STRAPS BROKE. AS A RESULT, CONSUMER FELL TO THE GROUND, AND SUSTAINED NECK AND BACK INJURIES. *AK
SUPPORT CABLES FOR MY TAILGATE BOTH BROKEN WITHEN 3 YEARS OF PURCHASE OF VEHICLE. I BLAMED MY SON OF LETTING IT DROP BUT AFTER READING A ARTICLE IN THE GRAND RAPIDS PRESS I REALIZE IT IS A MAJOR DEFECT AND G.M. OWES ME REPLACMENT PARTS AND A APOLOGY. *AK
WHILE COMING TO A STOP ON A HILL THE CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKES HOWEVER THEY DID NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. WHEN BACKING OUT STEERING WHEEL DID NOT MOVE. THE CONSUMER HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALER FOR ANALYSIS. THE DEALER DETERMINED THAT THE SHAFT IN THE POWER STEERING PUMP SNAPPED AND CAUSED THE BRAKES AND STEERING TO FAIL. THE DEALER REPLACED THE POWER BOOSTER, POWER STEERING PUMP AND SERPENTINE BELT. *AK *NM
2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD PICKUP HAD A COMPLETE POWER BRAKE AND POWER STEERING FAILURE ALMOST RESULTING IN A CRASH AS I WAS ALMOST NOT ABLE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. LUCKILY NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF ME. MECHANIC STATES THAT PUMP SHAFT HAD A BREAK IN IT. I'VE STILL GOT THE PART IF THAT WOULD HELP WITH YOUR INVESTIGATION. LUCKILY I WAS NOT TOWING MY 10,000 POUND RV TRAILER AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE OR I MAY NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTROL THE VEHICLE. *AK
WHEN THE CONSUMER APPLIED THE BRAKE THE PEDAL WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR AND THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER WHERE THE TECHNICIAN DETERMINED THAT THE STEERING BELT FAILED. PLEASE PROVIDE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *NM
ALTERNATOR DOES NOT CHARGE AFTER STARTUP ON DAYS WHEN OUTSIDE TEMP.<30 DEG F. TAKES UP TO 90SEC. DEPENDING ON TEMP. TO START CHARGING... I AM AFRAID IT WON'T CHARGE ONE OF THESE TIMES, AND LEAVE ME STRANDED. DEALER SAYS THIS IS NORMAL FOR NEW VEHICLES, ALTHOUGH I OR OTHER MECHANICS I'VE BROUGHT IT TO HAVE EVER HEARD OF THIS. I AM THE SECOND OWNER OF THIS VEHICLE (40K MI) AND MY WARRANTY IS UP IN 1000 MI.SO I WOULD LIKE THIS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF NOW, BEFORE SOMETHING HAPPENS, BUT CHEVROLET DEALER WON'T ACKNOWLEGE THE PROBLEM. ALTHOUGH THEY DID REPLACE ONE OF THE BATTERIES WHEN MY MECHANIC FOUND IT TO BE BAD. I HAD TO BRING IT BACK TWICE TO THE DEALER BEFORE THEY ADMITTED ONE OF THE BATTERIES WAS LEAKING, CORRODED, TESTED BAD , AND REPLACED IT, THOUGHT THAT MIGHT SOLVE THE CHARGING PROBLEM BUT DID NOT.
BATTERY FAILED AND LEAKED ACID AT TERMINAL. ACID LEAKED ONTO WIND SHIELD WASHER PUMP. BATTERY AND PUMP HAD TO BE REPLACED.
LEFT HAND TAILGATE STRAP BROKE WHILE TAILGATE WAS IN A LOWERED POSITION AND I WAS SITTING ON TAILAGTE. STRAP DID NOT SEPARATE INTO TWO PIECES, BUT A NOTICEABLE "FOLD" NOW EXISTS IN STRAP AND AT THIS LOCATION IT FEELS LIKE THE STRAP HAS BROKEN. UPON STRAP FAILURE, LEFT HAND LOWER TAILGATE ATTACH POINT BENT DUE TO LOAD BEING PLACED UPON THIS STRUCTURE.*AK
SUBJECT: COMPLAINT: (ABS PRODUCT FAILURE -- ANTI-LOCKED BRAKE SYSTEM) ON 2001 CHEVY SUBURBAN - PURCHASED ON MAY, 2003, [XXX] E-MAILED TO: SALES@SMITHCHEVROLET.COM MY HUSBAND AND I PURCHASED A 2001 CHEVY SUBURBAN FROM SMITH CHEVROLET ABOUT EIGHT MONTHS (MAY 22, 2003). I AM ALSO AWARE THAT THE BRAKE BOOSTER WERE WORKED BEFORE WE PURCHASED THIS CAR. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE INVOLVED IN A CAR ACCIDENT ON DECEMBER 14, 2003. HE WAS MAKING A LEFT TURN ON A TWO-TURNING LANE, WHEN ABRUPTLY THE PERSON ON THE SECOND TURNING DECIDED THAT SHE WAS GOING TO CROSSED ONTO OUR TURNING LANE ABRUPTLY. MY HUSBAND ACTED FAST AND MADE A QUICK BRAKE STOP BUT HIS ANTI-LOCK BRAKES WHEELS LOCKED. THE CAR WOULD NOT STOP BUT WAS HEADING TOWARDS THE DIRECTION OF A CONCRETE COLUMN UNDERNEATH THE BRIDGE LOCATED AT STARLIGHT TERRACE. HE TRIED TO TURN THE WHEELS TO THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION, BUT IT WOULDN'T TURN BECAUSE THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM LOCKED ON HIS CAR. THERE WAS ONE LONG STRETCH OF SKIT MARKS ON THE STREET RIGHT-OF-WAY. THE POLICE OFFICER WANTED TO KNOW WHAT LANE WE WERE TURNING FROM WHEN I TOLD HIM THAT YOU COULD TELL JUST BY LOOKING AT THE SKIT MARK ON THE STREET. I WAS TOLD THAT THERE SHOULD HAVE NOT BEEN ANY SKIT MARKS ON THE STREET ESPECIALLY WHEN ONE HAS ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM. ALLSTATE TOOKK POSSESSION OF THE CAR THIS PAST WEEK. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH THE POWER STEERING AND BRAKES FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE MECHANIC CHECK THE PROBLEMS. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION. *JB
WHILE GETTING ROUTINE MAINTENANCE ON MY 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO, I ASKED THE DEALER TO CHECK THE BRAKES. I WAS INFORMED THAT THE REAR BRAKE ROTORS WERE SO CORRODED, THAT THEY HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE TRUCK ONLY HAS 27,000 MILES. I INFORMED GENERAL MOTORS, AND WAS TOLD THAT THIS WAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. I KNOW OF TWO OTHER PEOPLE THAT HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM. GMC ATTITUDE IS "TOO BAD". MY COMPLAINT IS WOULD THIS NOT BE A SAFETY PROBLEM? IF I HAD NOT CAUGHT MINE IN TIME, MY BRAKES COULD HAVE FAILED ME AT A CRITICAL TIME. OWNER WAS OPENING TAILGATE WHEN THE TAILGATE STARTED TO SLIP AND BOTH CABLES SNAPPED - NO INJURY OR TAILGATE SEPARATION OCCURRED. ODI ENGINEERING CONTACTED THE OWNER WHO PROVIDED THE ABOVE SUMMARY: THIS UPDATED INFORMATION DIFFERED FROM THE ORIGINAL INFORMATION WHICH WAS RECORDED IN ERROR. *AK

WHILE PROCEEDING TO ENTER THE HIGHWAY DRIVER ACCELERATED AND WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE STALLED REPEATEDLY. CONSUMER HAD TO PULL OFF THE EXIT RAMP. *AK ENGINE PINGING SINCE PURCHASE OF VEHICLE BUT WAS TOLD THIS WAS NORMAL. HOWEVER WHEN DRIVING 30-40 MPH ENGINE WILL PING LOUDLY THEN STALL. *TT
PARKING BRAKE WILL NOT HOLD VEHICLE ON AN INCLINE AND BARELY WORKS WHEN VEHICLE IS LEVEL. WITH THE PARKING BRAKE ON AND THE VEHICLE LEVEL THE TRUCK CAN BE MOVED FORWARD OR REVERSE WITH THE ENGINE AT IDLE SPEED WHEN PLACED IN GEAR. THE PARKING BRAKE IS USELESS ON EVEN THE SLIGHTEST INCLINE AND THE TRUCK WILL ROLL FREELY IN FORWARD OR REVERSE. *JB

THE ABS LIGHT CAME ON AND REMAINED ON AND THE ABS MOTOR CONTINUED TO RUN EVEN WHEN THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN VEHICLE TO THREE DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. *JB
I RECENTLY CAME TO A STOP SIGN AND COULD NOT STOP THE TRUCK. AS I CROSSED THE INTERSECTION I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO DIE! FORTUNATLY, THE DRIVER FROM THE OTHER VEHICLE WAS ALERT AND AVOIDED WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN A SERIOUS SITUATION. THE ABS STARTED TO PULSE UNDER DRY CONDITIONS WHEN THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN TO LESS THAN 5MPH, BUT CONTINUED TO ROLL FOR ANOTHER 20-30 FEET BEFORE IT CAME TO A STOP. ABS SHOULD BE A SAFETY FEATURE - NOT AN UNRELIABLE DEVICE THAT CAN GET SOMEONE KILLED. MY TRUCK IS OVER 36,000 MILES SO IT IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. I AM TOLD THAT IT WILL COST SOMEWHERE BETWEEN $500 -$1000 TO FIX, BUT THERE WAS NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WOULD NOT HAPPEN AGAIN. AT THIS TIME I HAVE PULLED THE ABS 60A FUSE AND I FEEL MUCH SAFER WITHOUT THE GM ABS SYSTEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS GM PROBLEM AND I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT THERE ISN'T A FIX, RECALL, OR CONSUMER NOTIFICATION. I WON'T BELIEVE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPEN, SINCE THE SERVICE MANAGERS ARE FAMILIAR WITH THIS PROBLEM. AFTER PULLING THE ABS FUSE, I DON'T LIKE THE ABS AND BRAKE INDICATORS LITE UP ON MY INSTRUMENT PANEL. I WOULD LIKE TO DISABLE THE ABS, SO THAT THE LIGHTS NO LONGER LIGHT UP ON MY PANEL. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE SEND ME INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO DISABLE THE ABS PROPERLY.*AK

THE LEFT TAILGATE CABLE ON MY 2001 CHEVEROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD BROKE A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO. FORTUNATELY THE RIGHT HELD AND NO SERIOUS INJURY OCURRED. HOWEVER BOTH HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF RUST INSIDE THE PROTECTIVE SLEEVES HAD EATEN AWAY THE METAL. THIS PROBLEM IS CONCEALED BY THE PROTECTIVE COVER OVER THE STEEL CABLE.*AK
2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD TAIL GATE CABLE. RIGHT SIDE TAILGATE CABLE BROKE AND TAILGATE FELL OFF WHILE DRIVING. DAMAGING TAILGATE AND SIDE OF TRUCK. REMANING CABLE CAUSED TAILGATE TO SWING OUT PAST THE LEFT SIDE OF TRUCK. LUCKALY THERE WERE NO ONCOMING VEHICLES.

A 2001 CHEVY SILVERADO WAS STRUCK ON THE SIDE AND SENT INTO A TREE AT BETWEEN 30-35 MPH. THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT FRONT END DAMAGE AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *LA
MY POWER STEERING PUMP FAILED, RESULTING IN SIGNIFICANT REDUCTION IN BRAKING AND STEERING FUNCTION. THIS IS OF SPECIAL CONCERN TO ME AS I FREQUENTLY TOW A 10,000 POUND FIFTH-WHEEL TRAILER. THE FAILURE OCCURRED IN OCTOBER OF 2003 AND THE PUMP WAS REPLACED BY THE DEALER UNDER WARRANTY. *NM
ENGINE 6.0L HAS PISTON SLAP, BURNS OIL QT/700 MILES, ROUGH IDLE. *AK
2001 CHEVROLET 2500HD. 8.1 LITER MOTOR, ALLISON TRANSMISSION. THE TRUCK HAS MULTIPLE PROBLEMS THAT THE DEALER IS REFUSING TO ACKNOWLEDGE AND FIX. *LA -HARD STARTING WHEN HOT. WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN AND PARKED FOR 10 MINUTES, IT WILL NOT START. ENGINE TURNS OVER, BUT DOES NOT FIRE. AFTER AN ADDITIONAL 2-3 MINUTE WAIT, IT WILL EVENTUALLY START. THIS HAPPENS ON A REGULAR BASIS. DEALER HAD THE TRUCK FOR 1 WEEK AND CLAIMS HE CAN NOT REPRODUCE THE PROBLEM. THEY SUGGESTED REPLACING PARTS WITH NO GARANTEE OF THE FIX. -EXHAUST FAILING. THE EXHAUST WAS REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY DUE TO LOOSE BAFFLES. IT IS FAILING AGAIN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. DEALER AGAIN CLAIMS THE NOISE IS NORMAL. -EXCESSIVE OIL CONSUMPTION. I HAD IT IN FOR THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALER CHANGED THE OIL AND HAD ME COME IN EVERY 500 MILES TO CHECK THE OIL LEVEL. IT USED 1 1/2 QUARTS IN 3,000 MILES. THIS IS NORMAL TO USE THIS MUCH OIL. HOW EVER I TOW A TRAILER AND PLOW SNOW WITH THIS VEHICLE. DURING THESE TIMES OF TOWING AND PLOWING, THE TRUCK USES 3-4 QUARTS OF OIL IN 3,000 MILES. THERE ARE NO OBVIOUS LEAKS. THE DEALER AGAIN CLAIMS THERE IS NO PROBLEM. THIS VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED WITH THE LARGE MOTOR AND HEAVY DUTY TRANSMISSION SPECIFICALLY FOR THE TYPE OF WORK I EXPECT IT TO DO.
EXPERIENCED TIRE BELT SEPARATION AND BLOW OUT WHILE TRAVELING. THE TIRE FAILED WITHOUT WARNING CAUSING DAMAGE TO THE VEHICLE OF $2200.00 AND REQUIRED REPLACEMENT OF THE TIRE. THE TIRE HAD 27000 MILES OF USE AT THE TIME OF THE FAILURE. THE TIRE INVOLVED WAS FIRESTONE STEELTEX RADIAL, LOAD RANGE E - M/S #08426 LT245/75R16 120/116R, DA432T D20D DOT VNII BIC 5000, MADE IN CANADA 31055 UR BMD5326-2. *LA
BOTH TAILGATE STRAPS ON MY 2001 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD BROKE SIMULTANEOUSLY WHEN I DROPPED THE TAILGATE AS I WAS OPENING IT.
TAILGATE CABLE WAS RUSTING. CONSUMER IS CONCERNED THAT THE TAILGATE WILL COLLAPSE. *AK *TS *NLM
FIRST INCIDENT OF THE FUEL SENSOR FAILING (LOW FUEL LIGHT AND FUEL GAUGE INDICATOR FALSE) WAS AT 45,500 MILES WHICH WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY THE FIRST TIME. 2ND TIME FAILED ON 02/16/2009 AT 133,697 MILES WHICH COSTS ME 754.67. 3RD TIME WHICH IS CURRENTLY STARTING TO ACT UP AGAIN AT 174,500 MILES, AND WILL PROBABLY COST ME ANOTHER 754.67!! FIRST OF ALL I CAN UNDERSTAND ONCE ON A VEHICLE BUT 3 TIMES IS RIDICULOUS, NOT TO MENTION THE EXPENSE! CHEVROLET SHOULD HAVE HAD SOME TYPE OF RECALL ON THIS OR LEAST FIGURE OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THIS. NO DOUBT THIS IS A DEFECT WITH THIS PART AND VERY EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR. I'M ABOUT TO GET RID OF THIS VEHICLE DUE TO THIS PROBLEM WHICH WILL STILL COST ME MONEY IN THE END WITH TRADE-IN OR SELLING IT MYSELF SO I WILL PROBABLY HAVE REPAIR IT FOR THE 3RD TIME. I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS PROBLEM AND IT SEEMS A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE. I HAVE LOST FAITH IN GM AND WILL PROBABLY NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER ONE. THIS ISSUE COULD BE DANGEROUS IF PEOPLE DO NOT CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. NOT EVERYONE HAS 750.00 LAYING AROUND AND GM SHOULD FIX FOR FREE ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAPPENS A 2ND, 3RD TIME!
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IT FAILED TO SHIFT GEARS. CONSUMER WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, AND PULLED OVER. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR INSPECTION, AND MECHANIC DETERMINED THAT THE CABLE ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, AND REPLACED IT. *AK CONSUMER STILL HAVING TROUBLE WITH TRANSMISSION. *TC
