I WAS TRAVELING ON A CROSS COUNTRY TRIP TOWING A 35 FOOT CAMPER. I WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I USED THE CAMPER BRAKES TO COME TO A STOP.I TOOK THE TRUCK TO A NEARBY GARAGE[IN NEW MEXICO] WHERE THEY INSPECTED THE BRAKE LINES AND DISCOVERED THEY WERE SEVERELY RUSTED ONE HAD RUSTED COMPLETELY THRU. NO WARNING LIGHT EVER CAME ON AT ANY TIME DURING THE 3 THOUSAND MILES I DROVE ON THAT TRIP. *TR
BRAKE LINE FAILURE DUE TO INFERIOR, UNSAFE MATERIALS, SUBJECT TO CORROSION, USED TO MANUFACTURE BRAKE LINES. BRAKE LINE SUDDENLY BURST, LUCKILY AT VERY SLOW SPEED, WHILE LEAVING A PARKING PLACE. GM DEALER "REPAIRED" BRAKE LINES IMMEDIATELY, INDICATING THAT THE BREACH WAS AT A SINGLE CORRODED SPOT IN THE LINE. APPROXIMATELY 1 YEAR LATER, BRAKE LINE, AGAIN,SUDDENLY BURST, AGAIN, LUCKILY AT VERY SLOW SPEED IN A FARM FIELD. SAME GM DEALER REPLACED ALL BRAKE LINES, INDICATING THAT ALL BRAKE LINES WERE COMPLETELY CORRODED. BRAKES AND STEERING ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEMS ON A VEHICLE; ONE CANNOT KILL/INJURE ONE'S SELF IF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT RUN, WILL NOT START OR LOOKS TERRIBLE. THESE ESSENTIAL SAFETY SYSTEMS SHOULD BE CONSTRUCTED OF NONCORROSIVE MATERIALS, FOR PENNIES IN EXTRA COST TO GM. GM HAS RESPONDED PUBLICLY THAT THIS IS A WEAR AND TEAR ISSUE AND THESE VEHICLE ARE SIMPLY "TOO OLD". THIS IS A LAME EXCUSE FOR SUCH AN IMPORTANT SAFETY SYSTEM! PLEASE ASK GM WHY THIS PROBLEM IS NOT PRESENT WITH ALL MAKES AND MODELS OF VEHICLES OF A SIMILAR AGE. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO1500. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 5 MPH, THE CONTACT DEPRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL HOWEVER THE PEDAL ABNORMALLY DROPPED TO THE FLOORBOARD.THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO STOP THE VEHICLE WITHOUT INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE CONTACT INSPECTED THE VEHICLE AND DISCOVERED THAT THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY CORRODED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 26,000.
I HAD APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP, AND THE ABS WAS GOING ON AND OFF AND I ENDED UP GOING THRU THE INTERSECTION, LUCKILY NO ONE ELSE WAS IN THE INTERSECTION, I FOUND OUT THERE WAS A RECALL ON IT IN 2005 AND THE WORK WAS DONE ON 1/23/2007, I CALLED CHEVROLET TO FIND OUT THAT THE RECALL WAS DONE THEY "CLEANED" IT AND HEY LOOK 5 YEARS LATER IT DOES THE SAME THING AND GM WONT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. LOOKS LIKE CLEANING REALLY DIDN'T DO THE JOB. *TR
I WAS ON MY WAY TO THE AUTOPARTS STORE FOR AN OIL FILTER FOR MY OTHER VEHICLE WHEN I CAME UPON A LIGHT AT A BUSY INTERSECTION. AS THE LIGHT CHANGED TO YELLOW I HIT MY BRAKES AND THE PEDAL WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I WAS DOING NO MORE THAN 30 AT THIS TIME. THERE WAS NO WAY THAT I COULD STOP, I DRIFTED THROUGH THE INTERSECTION AND WAS ABLE TO DRIFT TO SAFETY. I WAS LUCKY - ANOTHER CAR WAS ALSO ABOUT TO TURN LEFT IN FRONT OF ME AS I WAS DRIFTING THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, HE STOPPED SO AN ACCIDENT WAS AVOIDED. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED AND HAD TO HAVE ALL BRAKE LINES REPLACED. ALL WERE RUSTED AND PITTED. PAID NEARLY $900.00 TO HAVE STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES INSTALLED. THESE (STAINLESS STEEL BRAKE LINES) SHOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED BY GM AT THE FACTORY. MANUFACTURERS ALL USE STAINLESS STEEL FOR EXHAUST, WHY NOT FOR BRAKE LINES - SEEMS A BIT MORE IMPORTANT TO USE STAINLESS BRAKE LINES. WHAT IS THE COST DIFFERENTIAL BETWEEN CHEAP STEEL AND STAINLESS - A FEW EXTRA DOLLARS SPENT IN MANUFACTURING COULD SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE. *TR
ON AUGUST 3, 2012 I WAS DRIVING MY 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500. AT SOME POINT WHEN I PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE VERY BOTTOM AND BRAKES DID NOT WORK AT ALL. THE SITUATION WAS VERY SERIOUS, SINCE I WAS DRIVING ON THE BUSY HIGHWAY, STATE ROUTE 287 IN NJ. FORTUNATELY, I WAS ABLE TO SLOW DOWN THE VEHICLE WITHOUT AN ACCIDENT. BECAUSE I USE THIS VEHICLE FOR WORK, I TOOK IT TO THE AUTO SHOP AND HAD IT FIXED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. AT THE SHOP I FOUND OUT THAT THE VEHICLE IS COMPLETELY RUSTED UNDERNEATH AND ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES BROKE BECAUSE OF IT. THEY HAD TO REPLACE 40 FEET OF BRAKE LINES AND REFILL THE BRAKE FLUID THAT WAS LOST AS A RESULT OF THE BROKEN LINES. I WAS ALSO INFORMED BY THE MECHANIC THAT NOT ONLY THE BRAKE LINES, BUT FUEL LINES ARE RUSTED TOO. ALL OF THAT HAS TO BE REPLACED. MOREOVER, THE VEHICLE?S SPRINGS AND CHASSIS ARE RUSTED TOO. I WAS TOLD THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDS A SPECIAL PROTECTIVE COATING UNDERNEATH TO AVOID THAT IT FALLS APART. AT THIS TIME I'M TALKING TO GMC COMPANY REGARDING MY ISSUE, WHICH DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEY WILL COVER MY EXPENSES OR REPAIR THE VEHICLE ON RECALL BASIS. I'VE BEEN TOLD THAT THEY WILL DO THE INVESTIGATION, AND WILL CONTACT ME SOON. I FEEL RESPONSIBLE TO REPORT SUCH AN UNFORTUNATE SITUATION, SO IT WILL BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER, IN ORDER FOR OTHERS TO AVOID ANY ACCIDENTS OR DEATHS. *TR
DRIVING 45 MPH. NEEDED TO APPLY BRAKES. NO BRAKE AT ALL. I WAS ABLE TO DOWN SHIFT AND THANK GOD I WAS GOIN UP A SLIGHT GRADE AND NO ONE WAS INFRONT OR CLOSE BEHIND. I WAS ABLE TO VEER OFF ROAD AND GET IT SLOWED IN TIME TO TURN INTO THE PARKING LOT OF THE DEALER WHEWRE I HAD PURCHASED MY TRUCK 10+ YEARS AGO. THEY SAID ALL BRAKES LINES MUST BE REPLACED. EXCESSIVE RUST ON ALL. I LOOKED AT THE LINE TO THE LEFT REAR WHEEL AFTER THEY REMOVED IT. IT FELL APART IN THE MECHANICS HAND. HOW IT HAD STOPPED ME IS UNKNOWN. BRAKE LINES DO NOT DO THIS. I'VE WORKED ON VEHICLES FOR 40 YEARS. HARD BRAKES LINES DO NOT RUST LIKE THIS. THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE IS CORRODED. NOT JUST THE TOP SAY, FROM SALT. THE ENTIRE LINE. I WAS NOT ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK WITH ANY REMAINING BRAKE. PHYSICS STOPPED MY TRUCK. FEET BEFORE PLOWING INTO A MAJOR INTERSECTION. I'D LOVE TO BUY ANOTHER GM PRODUCT. NOT SURE I HAVE THE FAITH THAT GM WANTS ME TO. THANKS GM. HOW CAN YOU BAILOUT OF THIS MESS? RECALL IT. I SPENT GOOD MONEY ON A CHEVY BECAUSE A CHEVY WILL LAST AS LONG AS YOUR WILLING TO CARE FOR IT PROPERLY. NOW I'M SPENDING IN EXCESS OF $800 TO FIX YOUR "LOW BIDDER" VENDORS MISTAKE. WHOMEVER MADE THE BRAKE LINES SHOULD BE BAILING ME OUT. MAKE IT RIGHT GM. JUST MAKE IT RIGHT. *TR
WITH ENGINE ON AND GOING AT APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, AN 'ABS SYSTEM' WARNING LIGHT CAME OFF ALONG WITH A CONTINUOUS MOTOR TYPE SOUND. I PARKED THE CAR ON SIDE ROAD AND LOUD 'MOTOR' TYPE NOISE CONTINUED COMING UNDERNEATH THE CAR. I DROVE THE CAR BACK HOME AND ABS SYSTEM LIGHT ON WITH CONTINUOUS SOUND DID NOT STOP. TURNED ENGINE OFF AND THE SOUND DID NOT STOP. AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS, THE SOUND DID NOT STOP AND HAD TO DISCONNECT CAR BATTERY. TOOK CAR INTO CAR DEALERSHIP AND RIGHT AWAY BEFORE CAR WAS FORMALLY TESTED/DIAGNOSED, THE SERVICE ADVISOR STATED HE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT THE ISSUE WAS. THE CAR WAS DIAGNOSED AND SERVICE ADVISOR CONFIRMED THE CAR HAD A 'KNOWN' PROBLEM RELATED TO ABCM (ABS CONTROL MODULE). ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY RELATED PROBLEM. THIS IS THE REASON WHY I AM SUBMITTING THIS SAFETY COMPLAINT. ACCORDING TO THE SERVICE ADVISOR, DAMAGED ABCM COMPUTER CAN SEND AN INCORRECT SIGNAL AND THE BREAKS CAN CLOSE WHEN THE CAR IS RUNNING. I CONTACTED CHEVROLET CORPORATE AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION (SERVICE REQ # 71-1092953268). I WAS INFORMED THERE ARE NO RECALLS FOR THIS TYPE OF PROBLEMS. I DID A QUICK SEARCH IN THE INTERNET AND FOUND THAT MANY CONSUMERS ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE SAME PROBLEM. ALSO NOTED THAT THE PROBLEM DOES NOT SEEM TO BE RELATED ONLY TO 2002 CHEVY TRUCKS, BUT OTHER CAR MODELS AND YEARS. IF THE CARDEALER SERVICE MANAGER IS CORRECT AND THIS IS A SAFETY RELATED PROBLEM, THEN THIS ISSUE COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INCIDENTS. CAN NHTSA PLEASE LOOK INTO THIS PROBLEM AND CONFIRM IF THIS IS A POTENTIAL SAFETY PROBLEM? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING, THE ENGINE BEGAN MAKING A CLICKING NOISE. THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT ONE EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLT WAS BROKEN. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO ADVISED THAT TWO EXHAUST MANIFOLD BOLTS WERE FRACTURED. THE CONTACT STATED THAT IF THE VEHICLE CONTINUED TO BE DRIVEN, THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER WOULD BE DAMAGED. THE FAILURE RECURRED BECAUSE THE BOLTS WERE DEFECTIVE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,000.
I WAS DRIVING WHEN I WENT TO STOP AND THE PEDAL WAS SOFT. THE TRUCK STILL STOPPED BUT THE PEDAL DIDN'T FEEL RIGHT. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO MY IN-LAWS HOUSE,ABOUT 2 MILES. WHEN I GOT OUT I SAW BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE BRAKE LINES RUNNING ALONG THE FRAME ON THE DRIVERS SIDE. THEY ARE THE LINES THAT GO TO THE ABS MODULE. WHEN I INSPECTED FURTHER, ALL 4 LINES WERE EITHER LEAKING OR ABOUT TO. THAT IS WHEN I NOTICED BOTH ROCKER PANELS, JUST UNDER THE DOORS, WERE RUSTED AND THE PASSENGER SIDE RUSTED THROUGH. THE DOORS ARE NOT RUSTED AND THERE IS VERY LITTLE RUST ON THE TRUCK EVEN WHERE THE PAINT HAS FLAKED OFF. *TR
TOTAL BRAKE FAILURE DUE TO BRAKELINES RUSTED OUT, HAD TO REPLACE ALL BRAKELINES. POWERPLANT COMPANY TRUCK. *TR
SLOWING DOWN TO PARK, PUSHED BRAKES, PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. BARELY STOPPED BEFORE PINNING SOMEONE BETWEEN MY VEHICLE AND ANOTHER TRUCK. REAR BRAKE LINE BURST BELOW DRIVER SEAT, BRAKE FLUID PUDDLE UNDER TRUCK. UPON INSPECTION, ALL 4 BRAKE LINES RUNNING ALONG THE FRAME TOTALLY RUSTED, ABOUT TO BURST. NEED TO REPLACE ALL LINES ON WHOLE TRUCK. ON THE FLATBED TOWTRUCK, NOTICED THE DRIVER REAR LEAF SPRING WHERE IT WRAPS AROUND THE BUSHING WAS MISSING THE TOP HALF. THIS IS WHERE FORCE IS TRANSMITTED FROM AXLE TO FRAME (BACK IS A HANGER / PIVOT). THE WHOLE REAR AXLE COULD HAVE TORN OFF. NOTICED WHERE IT HAD CRACKED AND HAD RUSTED 1/2 THROUGH BEFORE FALLING OFF, LIKELY SOMETIME RECENTLY. *TR
WHILE PARKING, BRAKE LINES BURST, ALMOST PINNED A PERSON BETWEEN MY TRACK AND THEIR PARKED CAR - PROBABLY WOULD,HAVE ONLY BROKE LEGS/HIPS. UPON INSPECTION, ALL BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. ALL BRAKE LINES IN THE ENTIRE TRUCK NEEDED TO BE REPLACED (USED STAINLESS STEEL). UPON INVESTIGATION, SAW THIS HAPPENED TO MILLIONS OF OTHER CHEVY TRACKS, SOME INVOLVING CRASHES. *TR
I WENT TO STOP AT STREET LIGHT AND THE BRAKE WENT TO THE FLOOR NO BRAKES AT ALL. LATER FOUND BRAKES LINES RUSTED THREW. ALL TRANSMISSION LINES ALSO RUST THREW. PRICE TO HAVE FIXED OVER $2000.00 *TR
I WAS DRIVING DOWN LOCAL ROAD, WHEN THERE WAS A THREE CAR ACCIDENT WAY AHEAD. I SOWED RIGHT DOWN, MAY 25-30 MPH AS WE CAME UP ON IT, REALIZING AS I WENT TO SLOW DOWN MORE, MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. I MADE IT HOME AND PARKED. MY BOYFRIEND LOOKED AT IT NEXT MORNING, I HAD NO BRAKE FLUID LEFT, ONE OF THE LINES WAS SO CORRODED THE FLUID LEAKED ALL OVER THE DRIVEWAY. I HAD RECENTLY HAD MY BRAKES DONE AND INSPECTION WITHIN THE PAST MONTH. I BOUGHT THE TRUCK BRAND NEW, AND HAVE HAD A LOT OF ISSUES WITH IT. INCLUDING ABS THAT WAS PREVIOUSLY RECALLED, AND NEVER WORKED AFTER IT WAS REPLACED, WHICH I DID COMPLAIN ABOUT, HE INTERIOR SET MATERIAL NEEDED REPLACING, THE TAIL GATE CABLES AND HINGES ARE BROKE, THE DEALER SAYS THERE IS NO RECALL ON THEM. A SENSOR WENT IN GAS TANK, THE DRIVERS SIDE MIRROR FELL OFF, THE WINDOW CABLE ON DRIVERS SIDE HAS BEEN REPLACED TWICE, PASSENGER SIDE ONCE, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. LIKE I SAID, I BOUGHT IT BRAND NEW OFF THE LOT, TRADED IN OLDER CHEVY SILVERADO, PAID CASH WITH GM DISCOUNT. I LOVE MY TRUCK, BUT THINK IT HAS HAD WAY TOO MANY PROBLEMS. I HAVE DEFINITELY READ A LOT OF COMPLAINTS ON THE CORRODED GAS LINES AMONG OTHER ISSUES AND WOULD HOPE CHEVY WOULD STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS. *TR
I HAD COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WITH NO WARNING , BRAKE LINE IS RUSTED. AND HAD TO USE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO STOP.WAS A NIGHTMARE. *TR
HAD TO MAKE A PANIC STOP AT A SPEED OF 50 MPH....NOT A FULL BRAKING PANIC STOP BUT A MINOR PANIC STOP WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. DROVE 3 MILES TO HOME (VERY CAREFULLY) ......SERVICE GARAGE SAID I HAD BLOWN A BRAKE LINE DUE TO RUST, AND ALL LINES WERE COMPLETELY RUSTED. COST TO REPLACE ALL LINES, $950.00. *TR
REAR ENDED A LADY AND HER BABY YESTERDAY AFTER HITTING THE BRAKES ONLY TO FIND THEM GO TO THE FLOOR AND HAD NO BRAKES. BRAKE LINES ARE EXCESSIVELY RUSTED AND ONE BURST. AFTER TALKING TO ALOT OF PEOPLE THIS SEEMS TO BE VERY COMMON ON EARLY 2000 GM TRUCKS. JUST LOOKED AT MY WIVES 2002 YUKON AND ITS WORSE THAN MY TRUCK. *TR
FUEL LINES RUSTED OUT. BRAKE LINES RUSTED OUT EARLIER. TAILGATE, WHEEL WHEELS,CAB, ETC ALL RUSTED THRO. WHEELS HUBS SO RUSTED, THEY HAD TO BE CUT OUT WITH A TOUCH. IT'S SO RUSTED OUT, I FEEL IT'S ALMOST UNSAFE. FUEL LINES SO RUSTED OUT, THEY WERE DRIPPING GAS. *TR
BRAKE LINES ROTTING OUT UNDER MY DRIVERS DOOR ON MY 2002 SILVERADO ,NEVER SAW SO MUCH RUST IN MY LIFE AND I LIVE IN A FAIRLY WARM CLIMATE,DEALER WANTING 1500.00 TO REPLACE ,THERE AREA LOT OF OTHER OWNERS COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ,,,SOMEONE WILL GET KILLED BECAUSE OF THIS.... *JS
EXPERIENCED COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE WITHOUT ANY WARNING LIGHTS DUE TO RUSTED BRAKE LINES.THE PLACEMENT OF THE ANTILOCK BRAKE CONTROLLER THREE FEET BEHIND THE DRIVERS SIDE TIRE AT THE TOP OF FRAME AND NO APPARENT CORROSION PROTECTION SEEMS TO HAVE CAUSED THIS TO HAPPEN. *TR
BRAKE LINES WERE CORRODED AND RUPTURED LEAVING THE VEHICLE WITHOUT BRAKES. VEHICLE LEFT THE ROAD AND ENDED UP IN THE DITCH NARROWLY MISSING TREES. BY SHEAR LUCK THIS FAILURE DID NOT INVOLVE BRAKING IN TOWN OR TO SLOW DOWN IN TRAFFIC. *TR
THE TRUCK IS PRIMARILY USED FOR TOWING TRAILERS. ONCE IN 2012 WHEN TOWING A 10K LBS TRAVEL TRAILER A REAR BRAKE LINE THAT APPEARED SOLID DEVELOPED A HOLE AND RELEASED ANY HYDRAULIC PRESSURE. THE TRUCK WAS SAFELY STOPPED AND REPAIRED. AUGUST OF 2013 WHILE TOWING PWCS ON A TRAILER ANOTHER LINE THAT APPEARED TO BE SOLID BRAKE LINE DEVELOPED A HOLE AND LEAKED OUT THE BREAK FLUID. TRUCK WAS SAFELY STOPPED AND IS AWAITING REPAIRS. THE TRUCK APPEARS TO HAVE AN ABNORMAL AMOUNT OF RUST ON THE BRAKE LINES BRAKE COMPONENTS FRAME AND SUSPENSION COMPONENTS FOR THE AGE OF TRUCK. FRONT AND REAR BRAKES WERE REPLACED 3 TIMES DUE TO RUST ALSO. BODY OF THE TRUCK HAS NO RUST OR DAMAGE TO IT. *TR
I WAS DRIVING 60MPH WHEN CONSTRUCTION CONES BROUGHT TRAFFIC TO ONE LANE. AS I BEGAN TO APPLY MY BRAKES, I COULD FEEL MY FOOT GOING TO THE FLOOR AND I WAS NOT SLOWING AT ALL. I TRIED THE EMERGNCY BRAKE, AND ALSO NO BRAKING OCCURED. I MANAGED TO DRIVE ONTO THE MEDIUM, AND LUCKILY WAS ABLE TO AVOID ALL THE "CONSTRUCTION JUNK" THAT LITTERED THAT AREA. AFTER A VERY LONG TIME, I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY MANEUVER TO A SAFE STOP. WHEN I SPOKE WITH THE MECHANIC, HE TOLD ME THERE WERE NO BRAKE LINES. *TT
THE VEHICLE WILL NOT START DUE TO A PROBLEM WITH SECURITY SYSTEM OR PASS LOCK.I SOMETIMES HAVE TO WAIT UP TO 2 HOURS BEFORE THE VEHICLE WILL START. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO PARK, THE BRAKE PEDAL WIGGLED AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT STOP. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY REPEATED PRESSURE TO THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER TO STOP THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER AND THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL ASSOCIATED WITH NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTI LOCK). THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
THANK GOODNESS I JUST GOT OFF A MAJOR ROADWAY IN TOWN. MY 16 YEAR OLD SON WAS DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WE GOT HOME AND I HAD TO RUN BACK OUT. I WAS DRIVING AT THE TIME. PULLED OUT OF MY CUL-DE-SAC AND WENT TO APPLY THE BRAKES AT THE STOP SIGN AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. LUCKY NO CARS OR CHILDREN WERE IN MY PATH. ALL LINES ARE RUSTED OUT. HAD TWO SECTIONS (FRONT) WITH MAJOR ROT THAT WERE LEAKING. NO INDICATOR LIGHTS OR SIGNS PRIOR TO MALFUNCTION. BOUGHT NEW LINES FROM LOCAL AUTO PARTS STORE AND HAVE BEEN REPLACING A LITTLE AT A TIME. ENTIRE UNDERSIDE OF TRUCK LOOKS LIKE ITS 50 YEARS OLD!!!! WILL SEE WHAT ROTS OUT NEXT. *TR

WHILE DRIVING, THE VEHICLE OPERATOR EXPERIENCED COMPLETE BRAKE FAILURE--VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO NEAREST CHEVROLET DEALER AND IS NOW AWAITING "NEW " BRAKE LINE INSTALLATION. I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT THE ENTIRE BRAKING SYSTEM HAS CORRODED AND WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. *JB

I AM THE ORIGINAL OWNER OF THIS 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 15 MPH AND AS I STARTED BRAKING THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. ONCE THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR THE TRUCK STARTED TO BRAKE. I WAS ABLE TO SLOWLY MAKE IT HOME AS I WAS ONLY A HALF MILE AWAY. WHEN I GOT HOME I INSPECTED THE UNDER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND FOUND THE MAIN REAR BRAKE LINE HAD RUSTED AND WAS SPILLING BRAKE FLUID NEAR THE DRIVER REAR SHOCK. AFTER INSPECTING ALL THE STEEL TUBE BRAKE LINES THEY ALL WILL NEED REPLACING AS ALL ARE RUSTED VERY BADLY. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AND TRIED TO APPLY THE BRAKES. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT COMPLETELY TO THE FLOOR AND I HAD NO BRAKES. I APPLIED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE TO GET THE VEHICLE STOPPED. I FOUND THE MAIN BRAKE LINE GOING TO THE REAR AXLE HAD BLOWN. AFTER FURTHER INVESTIGATION, I FOUND EVERY ONE OF THE BRAKE LINES COMING OFF OF THE ABS BLOCK TO BE COMPLETELY DETERIORATED/RUSTED. EVERY BRAKE LINE ON THE VEHICLE WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IT WAS ALSO NOTED THAT THE FUEL LINES ARE NOT RUSTED. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A DIFFERENCE IN THE METAL USED AT THE TIME. ALSO SHOULD BE NOTED, THAT THERE WAS NO INDICATION OR WARNING FROM THE VEHICLE WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I BRAKE RESERVOIR WAS NOT COMPLETELY DRAINED WHEN THE LINE BLEW. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WOULD ACTIVATE ERRONEOUSLY WHILE DRIVING 10-15 MPH, INCREASING THE BRAKING DISTANCE OF THE VEHICLE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALER FOR A DIAGNOSTIC TEST. THE TEST RESULTS SHOWED A FAULTY ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SENSOR. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BUT THE FAILURE WOULD RECUR WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS. THE CONTACT STATED THE VEHICLE WAS PREVIOUSLY REPAIRED UNDER NHTSA CAMPAIGN I.D. NUMBER 05V379000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK) BUT THE REPAIR DID NOT REMEDY THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 48,000.
WAS APPROACHING A RED LIGHT AT APPROX 30 MILES PER HOUR WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL SIMPLY "POPPED" AND WENT ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR. I WAS ABLE TO MUSCLE IT TO A STOP BETWEEN THE VERY LITTLE BRAKING LEFT, DOWNSHIFTING AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. MECHANIC DETERMINED ALL BRAKE LINES RUSTED AND LEAKING. *TR
THE HOLDING CLIP FOR THE OIL PUMP INSIDE OF TRANSFER CASE BROKE WHICH ALLOWED THE OIL PUMP TO SHAKE INSIDE OF CASE AND CONSEQUENTLY RUBBED A HOLE THRU T CASE WHICH EFFECTIVELY EMPTIED ALL THE LUBRICATING OIL FROM T CASE RUINING MOST OF THE PARTS INSIDE. *TR

WHILE BACKING MY TRUCK OUT OF THE GARAGE I LOST MY BRAKES DUE TO PEDAL GOING TO FLOOR AND LOOSING BRAKE FLUID. I WAS ABLE TO GET IT TO STOP WITH EMERGENCY BRAKE. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I NOTICED ALL BRAKE LINES THAT ROUTE ON OUTSIDE OF FRAME BETWEEN MASTER CYLINDER AND ABS MODULE WERE RUSTED BADLY AND WERE WET WITH BRAKE FLUID. *TR
THE ORIGINAL FACTORY BRAKE LINES RUSTED THROUGH IN VARIOUS PLACES. THE MAIN LINE TO THE REAR RUNS CONCEALED FROM VIEW AND RUSTED, THE LINES GOING INTO THE ABS MODULE ARE LOCATED IN AN AREA THAT DEVELOPS CORROSION TOO. MY BRAKE PEDAL FELT WEEK AND WENT TO THE FLOOR AS THE RESULT OF THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE, LUCKILY NO ONE WAS INJURED . THE BRAKE LINE FAILURE COST ME A WEEKEND TRIP THAT I HAD TO USE THE TRUCK FOR, AT LEAST A $2,000 LOSS PLUS THE EXPENDITURE FOR THE REPAIRS. *TR
BRAKES FAILED DUE TO RUST / CORROSION. THESE BRAKE LINES SHOULD BE MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL. THEY ARE MADE FROM LOW GRADE STEEL. IT AMAZES ME THAT SOMETHING AS CRITICAL AS BRAKES WOULD BE CHOSEN AS A WAY TO LOWER COSTS ESPECIALLY WHEN THE COMPANY WHICH MADE THE TRUCK WAS BAILED OUT BY THE SAME TAX PAYERS WHOSE LIVES THEY PUT AT RISK. NEXT TRUCK WILL BE A TOYOTA. *TR
WHILE TURNING LEFT INTO A PARKING SPACE, THE BRAKE PEDDLE WAS HARD AND WOULD NOT GO DOWN. AFTER PUMPING THE BRAKES, THE PEDDLE WENT DOWN AND THE TRUCK STOPPED. THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES. EACH TIME, WHILE TURNING LEFT AND GOING SLOWER THAN 10 MPH. I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE AND THERE IS A RECALL FOR "SALT BELT" STATES. TENNESSEE IS NOT CONSIDERED ONE, EVEN THOUGH THE ROADS ARE SALTED SEVERAL TIMES PER WINTER SEASON. *TR

TRUCK IS PARKED IN DRIVEWAY DUE TO EXPENSE TO REPLACE ALL 4 TOTALLY RUSTED OUT BRAKE LINES. *TR

I WAS QUITE FORTUNATE TO HAVE BEEN LEAVING A PARKING SPOT AND HAD JUST LEFT "PARK" SHIFTED INTO DRIVE AND APPLIED THE BRAKE BECAUSE A PEDESTRIAN STEPPED OUT. AT THAT TIME THE PEDAL HIT THE FLOOR, I STEERED THE TRUCK IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION FROM THE PERSON, HEADED FOR A PART OF THE LOT WHERE THERE WERE NO CARS, APPLIED THE PARKING BRAKE, IT DID'NT WORK EITHER, SO I PUT IT INTO PARK. ALL THIS AND I HADNT APPLIED THE GAS TO THE VEHICLE. ONLY MOMENTS BEFORE I PARKED, I HAD BEEN TRAVELING ON THE EXPRESSWAY AT 70 MPH. WHEN I GOT OUT OF THE TRUCK, ALL THE BRAKE FLUID WAS ON THE GROUND. UPON CLOSER INVESTIGATION, WE NOTICED THE BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED OUT COMPLETELY. WE FEEL LUCKY THAT NO ONE WAS INJURED OR KILLED. I OWN A 2002 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 ON WHICH I HAVE FOUR MICHELIN LTX M/S 245/75-16 TIRES. AFTER 18 MONTHS AND 10,000 MILES THE SIDEWALLS BEGAN TO CRACK. I HAVE MICHELIN TIRES ON ALL FOUR OF MY VEHICLES AND HAVE NEVER HAD ONE CRACK EVEN ON 6 YEAR OLD TIRES. I CALLED MICHELIN, BUT THEY SAY THAT IS NORMAL WEATHERING. NOW THEY ARE CRACKING TO THE POINT THAT THE TREAD COULD EASILY SEPARATE. MY TIRE DEALER IS GOING TO REPLACE THEM, BUT MICHELIN WILL NOT REIMBURSE THEM AS MICHELIN DENIES THERE IS A PROBLEM. I SEE FROM ONLINE BLOGS THAT SIDEWALL CRACKS IN THIS TIRE ARE APPEARING ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND MICHELIN IS STONEWALLING IT. STEERING SHAFT MAKES NOISES ON TURNS AND BUMPY ROADS. *TR
MY CHEVROLET SILVERADO PICKUP (1500 4X4) HAS EXPERIENCED THREE MAJOR BRAKE FAILURES. THE FIRST FAILURE WAS WHILE DRIVING AND APPROACHING A STOP SIGN. WHEN I ATTEMPTED TO BRAKE, MY FOOT WENT TO THE FLOOR. AFTER PUMPING A FEW TIMES, THE TRUCK SLOWED BUT WITH LITTLE STOPPING POWER. THE VEHICLE WAS IMMEDIATELY TOWED AND BRAKE FLUID WAS ACTIVELY DRIPPING FROM THE LINES. THE SECOND FAILURE WAS ABOUT A YEAR LATER WHILE DRIVING AT LOW SPEEDS (<5 MPH) WHILE PARKING. AGAIN, MY FOOT WENT TO THE FLOOR BEFORE THE ABS SYSTEM ACTIVATED (COMPLETELY DRY CONDITIONS) WITH ESSENTIALLY NO STOPPING POWER (ABS ACTIVATION BUT NO BRAKING POWER). THIS RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT AS THE TRUCK DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH ROOM TO EFFECTIVELY STOP (THANK GOODNESS THE CAR IN THE PARKING SPACE IN FRONT OF MY WAS UNOCCUPIED). AFTER BEING REPAIRED BY THE DEALER (TWICE), THE PROBLEM JUST OCCURRED AGAIN (APPROX. 2 YEARS LATER). *TR
DURING BRAKING FROM 35MPH TO MAKE A RIGHT TURN MY BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. THE TRUCK DID NOT SLOW DOWN ENOUGH TO MAKE THE TURN, I DROVE DOWN A BLOCK TO THE NEXT INTERSECTION AND USED MY PARKING BRAKE TO COMPLETE MY STOP. I PARKED THE TRUCK AND IMMEDIATELY NOTICED FLUID FROM THE BRAKE LINE LEAKING OUT ON GROUND IN THE AREA JUST BELOW WHERE THE DRIVERS FEET ARE. THE LINE IS A RIGID STEEL LINE IN A GROUP WITH 3 OTHERS THAT RUN FROM THE ABS CONTROL UNIT FORWARD AND ALL OF THESE STEEL LINES ARE SEVERELY CORRODED PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OUTSIDE OF THE FRAME WHERE THE LINE HAS RUPTURED. MY TRUCK IS A CHEVROLET 1500 Z71 WITH 126,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN WELL MAINTAINED SINCE I HAVE OWNED IT. I FEEL THAT THIS ISSUE IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY OTHERS WITH RUSTED AND RUPTURED BRAKES ON THEIR CHEVY TRUCKS. OTHER PEOPLE WERE NOT AS FORTUNATE AS ME BECAUSE MY SON AND I MADE IT HOME AND WE WERE UNHARMED. I FEEL THAT IT IS IMPERATIVE EVERYONE WHO OWNS A CHEVY TRUCK OF SIMILAR MODEL YEAR BE ALERTED AND WARNED OF THIS POTENTIALLY DEADLY AND DANGEROUS BRAKE PROBLEM. *TR
