WAS BACKING INTO MY DRIVE AND THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. COULDN'T STOP AND BACKED RIGHT INTO MY 5TH WHEEL TRAVEL TRAILER. THE BRAKE LINE WERE SO CORRODED IT WAS UNBELIEVABLE. TOOK THE TRUCK TO BELLE TIRE AND HAD THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED WHICH COST NEARLY $700. THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL PEOPLE COULD GET SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. *TR
I WAS ON THE INTERSTATE DRIVING ABOUT 60 TO 70 MPH WHEN ALL OF A SUDDEN MY TRUCK SWITCHED TO FWD LOW ALL ON ITS OWN. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF ON THE SHOULDER . I WAS ABLE TO PUT THE VEHICLE BACK IN 2WD. LATER THE SERVICE 4WD LIGHT CAME ON. I ALSO HAVE OCCASIONS WHEN ALL OF THE DASH LIGHTS WILL COME ON AND ALL THE GAUGES DROP AND NOW MY ABS LIGHT FLASHES AND THE WARNING BELL RINGS AS I DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD. *TR
APPROACHING A 3 WAY STOP INTERSECTION, UPON DEPRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL IN ORDER TO STOP AT THE INTERSECTION, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. NO WARNING LAMPS OF ANY SORT WERE ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE BRAKE PEDAL GOING TO THE FLOOR. PUMPING OF THE PEDAL DID NOT PRODUCE ANY RESISTANCE. AFTER COUPLE MINUTES THE "SERVICE BRAKES" WARNING CAME ON. I WAS ABLE TO BRING THE TRUCK TO A STOP BY SLOWING DOWN. HAD TO HAVE THE TRUCK TOWED TO A FIRESTONE SERVICE CENTER THE TECHNICIAN, THE SERVICE CONSULTANT, AND I ALL OBSERVED THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES, THEY WERE ALL BADLY CORRODED, ONE OF THE LINES HAD DEVELOPED A PIN HOLE LEAD RESULTING IN THE BRAKE FAILURE. I HAVE OWNED MANY VEHICLES FAR OLDER AND WITH FAR MORE MILEAGE AND HAVE NEVER HAD TO REPLACE THE STEEL BRAKE LINES. I BELIEVE THE DESIGN IS FLAWED (THE ROUTING AND PLACEMENT OF LINES AND MODULE) OR THE BRAKE LINE MATERIAL (STEEL, INSTEAD OF STAINLESS STEEL) IS INSUFFICIENT. *TR
BRAKE LINES ARE COMPLETELY RUSTED OUT AND LEAKING. ONE WAS REPLACED LAST YEAR. FRAME HAS BEEN RUSTY SINCE TRUCK WAS NEW. VEHICLE HAS ONLY 63000 MILES. MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN HIGHWAY. *TR
WHILE DRIVING ON A MAIN CITY STREET WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC THE CARS AHEAD OF ME STARTED TO BRAKE. I STARTED TO APPLY MY BRAKES LIGHTLY WHEN THE PEDAL WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR, I WENT FOR THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AND PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I WAS ABLE TO STOP THE TRUCK. AFTER INSPECTION THE MAIN BRAKE LINE TO THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE WAS RUSTED AND RUPTURED ! ALL OF THE OTHER BRAKE LINES ON THE VEHICLE ARE IN JUST AS BAD SHAPE AND NEED TO BE REPLACED ALSO. *TR
COASTING TO A STOP SIGN. PRESSED BRAKES AND PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR. ENGAGED EMERGENCY BRAKE JUST BEFORE REAR END COLLISION WITH VEHICLE AT STOP. A PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID REMAINED AFTER A TOW HOME. *TR
HAD JUST DRIVEN 30 MILES ON BACKROADS TO MY PARENTS HOUSE TO PICKUP AN ENCLOSED RACE TRAILER (FULLY LOADED) AND WAS BACKING UP TO HOOKUP, HAD GOTTEN OUT TO CHECK LINEUP AND WHEN I GOT BACK IN TO BACKUP FURTHER THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND GOT A "SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM" WARNING ON THE GAUGES. UPON INVESTIGATION I FOUND ONE OF THE FRONT BRAKE LINES THAT RUN ON TOP OF THE FRAME RAIL IN THE ENGINE BAY THAT RUNS ON THE DRIVERS SIDE NEXT TO THE ENGINE HAD BURST AND THE LINES WERE RUSTED. I WOULD HATE TO WONDER WHAT WOULD OF HAPPENED IF THIS HAPPENED WHILE I WAS PULLING TRAILER ON COUNTRY BACKROADS AS I WAS GETTING READY TO DO......GM REALLY NEEDS TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. *TR
THIS IS THE SECOND TIME THE BRAKE LINES HAVE FAILED ON THIS VEHICLE AND A REPORT ISSUED TO NHTSA. THIS TIME, MY SON WAS DRIVING AND APPLIED THE BRAKES TO STOP AT A STOP SIGN. THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. HE WENT THROUGH THE STOP SIGN, CRASHED INTO A MEDIAN THAT SLOWED HIM DOWN, AND ENDED UP ON TOP OF THE MEDIAN. THANK GOODNESS THE TRUCK WAS EMPTY AND NO ONE WAS USING THE RIGHT-OF-WAY AT THE INTERSECTION. INSPECTION SHOWED YET ANOTHER CORRODED BRAKE LINE. THIS BRAKE LINE WAS OEM. THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED AFTER THE PREVIOUS INCIDENT LOOK FINE AND ARE NOT CORRODED. IT APPEARS THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES NEED TO BE REPLACED TO CORRECT THIS SAFETY DEFECT. *TR THE CONSUMER STATED HE EXPERIENCED HYDRAULIC BRAKE FAILURE AT 51,848 MILES DUE TO CORRODED BRAKE LINES. THE LINES BURST IN AN AREA THAT WAS WEAKENED BY CORROSION AND FAILED UNDER NORMAL USAGE AND BRAKE LINE PRESSURE. THERE WAS NO INDICATION THAT FAILURE WAS EMINENT. THE DEALER REPLACED THE RUSTED BRAKE LINES FROM THE MASTER CYLINDER. UPDATED 04/03/13
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO C1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT HE TRIED TO STOP THE VEHICLE AND THE BRAKE WENT ALL THE WAY TO FLOOR. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO INSPECTED THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE ENTIRE BRAKE LINE NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED WHO OFFERED NO ASSISTANCE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 69,974. UPDATED 05/10/13*LJ THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE LINES RUSTED CAUSING BRAKE FLUIDS TO LEAK OUT. STEPPED ON BRAKE PEDAL AND IT WENT DOWN TO THE FLOOR. MECHANIC LOOKED AT VEHICLE AND ADVISED THAT ALL BRAKE LINES WERE ROTTED OUT AND LEAKED BRAKE FLUID. ALL LINES NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
BRAKE LINES COMPLETELY ROTTED BEYOND REPAIR, SO BAD THAT THEY CANNOT BE REMOVED FROM THE ABS UNIT, WHICH SHOULD NOT BE UNDERNEATH THE TRUCK, SO VULNERABLE TO CORROSION FROM SALT. THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN STAINLESS LINES, OR ROUTED DIFFERENTLY. SAME WITH THE FUEL LINES. I WAS A DIE HARD CHEVY GUY, BUT THIS IS RIDICULOUS. SOOO MANY PEOPLE HAVE ISSUES WITH THIS, GM NEEDS TO STEP UP. I CAN'T WAIT TO SELL THIS TRUCK AND BUY AN ANTIQUE. *TR
MY SON [XXX] WANTED A 4X4 TRUCK SO THIS GUY [XXX] SAID HIS WAS FOR SALE HE COULD TEST DRIVE IT,WELL THE 4X4 DID NOT WORK ON THE TRUCK THE MINUTE MY SON SHIFTED IT IN TO 4 WHEEL DRIVE THE TIRE ROD AND SOMETHING ELSE,SO MY DAUGHTERS FATHER [XXX] WORKS ON VEHICLES AND SALES THEM TOO. WELL I ASKED [XXX] TO HELP GET MY SONS TRUCK BACK FROM [XXX] AND FIX NICKS TRUCK SO WE COULD HAVE A VEHICLE BECAUSE WE WERE SHARING ONE VEHICLE. NICK WANTED AND [XXX] WANTED FINALLY [XXX] FIXED [XXX] TRUCK AND WHEN WE GOT MY SON TRUCK BACK IT WAS MAKING A NOISE,SO [XXX] SAID HE THINKS ITS THE FUEL PUMP NO BIG DEAL,I SAID OK. HE GAVE ME AND ESTIMATE TO FIX NICKS TRUCK OF 2000.00, WELL SOMEONE AT [XXX]"S WAS RIPPING ME OFF IT WAS ONLY 600.00 R AROUND THAT AMOUNT. WELL ME AND MY HUSBAND WERE GOING THROUGH A BAD DIVORCE HE HAD JUST SIGN OVER THE TITLE AND REGISTRATION TO ME,AND IT WAS LEFT IN GLOVE BOX MY FAULT,BUT HE FORGED THE DOCUMENTS PLUS CASH A 500.00 CHECK THAT I STOPPED PAYMENT ON. I MADE TO POLICE REPORTS PLUS THERE'S 2 911 CALLS WHERE WE R CHASING HIM BUT THE SPEED WAS GETTING OUT OF HAND I TOLD MY SON TO BACK OFF,WE PAID 1500.00 FOR THE TRUCK OUR LIFE IS WORTH MORE. I GOT THE COMPLAINT NUMBERS COPS DID NOTHING. WENT TO DMV HE TRIED TWICE THERE TO SWITCH IT THEY TURNED HIM DOWN,SO HE WENT TO A TITLE COMPANY IN LAFAYETTE,LA ON JOHNSTON STREET AND GOT IT DONE. PLUS I PAID MY INSURANCE FOR SIX MONTHS AHEAD, I REPORTED IT TO PROGRESSIVE THEY WERE MAILING MY REFUND CHECK,HE STOLE THAT AND APPLIED IT BACK I THINK HE R SOMEONE GOT IN A WRECK AND TRIED TO CLAIM A INSURANCE CLAIM. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DECELERATING AND DESCENDING A HILL AT AN UNKNOWN SPEED, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND STOPPING DISTANCE WAS INCREASED. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A LOCAL MECHANIC FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THE MECHANIC STATED ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES HAD EXCESSIVE RUST AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE CONTACT DID NOT CALL THE MANUFACTURER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 101,000.
I WAS DRIVING AROUND 45MPH AND WHEN COMING TO A STOP THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR. I DID NOT HAVE TOTAL LOSS OF BRAKES, HOWEVER, IF THIS WAS AN EMERGENCY BRAKING CONDITION, I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP SAFELY. THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKE LINE RUSTED AND FLUID CAME OUT. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS ENGINEERING FAILURE. BRAKE LINES SHOULD NOT BE MADE OUT OF MATERIAL THAT CAN RUST. *TR
2003 CHEVY SILVERADO, PURCHASED NEW WITH 92K MILES ON THE CLOCK NOW. WHILE STARTING OUT FROM MY DRIVEWAY, I STOPPED FOR ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR WITH NO PRESSURE RESISTANCE. I RETURNED TO THE GARAGE AND SAW BRAKE FLUID DRIPPING FROM THE LEFT FRONT. A QUICK EXAMINATION SHOWED THAT A STEEL BRAKE LINE BURST OBVIOUSLY DUE TO MASSIVE RUST. THIS IS A SERIOUS, UNEXPECTED AND A CRITICAL DESIGN FAILURE. THIS TRUCK HAS NEVER SEEN SNOW/SALT AND THE STEEL BRAKE LINES ALONG THE UNDERBODY ARE LIKE-NEW (EVEN THOUGH THIS WOULD BE THE AREA THAT CORROSION WOULD BE EXPECTED!). I AM NO LONGER YOUNG AND HAVE DRIVEN MANY VEHICLES WITH OVER A HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES ON MOST OF THEM. I HAVE NEVER HAD A STEEL BRAKE LINE BURST. TO SEE HUNDREDS OF SIMILAR COMPLAINTS JUST ON THIS DATABASE IS CLEAR EVIDENCE OF A SAFETY ISSUE THAT HAS --- TO DATE --- BEEN IGNORED. IF NOT A RECALL, AT LEAST PROVIDE NOTICE TO OWNERS THAT THERE EXISTS A POTENTIALLY FATAL FLAW IN THE MATERIALS USED IN THE BRAKE SYSTEMS OF THESE VEHICLES. SINCE I'M STILL ON THE ORIGINAL FRONT BRAKE PADS, I THINK IT'S SAFE TO SAY I AM A GENTLE DRIVER AND HAVE NOT ABUSED THE BRAKES. THANKS. *TR
DRIVING DOWN 2 LANE ROAD AT APPROXIMATELY 40 IN A 45 MPH ZONE. TRAFFIC LIGHT TURNED YELLOW AT THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT. DECIDED TO PANIC STOP, PRESSED THE PEDAL HARD, IMMEDIATELY THE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKE WARNING CAME ON. TRUCK DID NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT BRAKING TO STOP AND I HAD TO PLOW THROUGH THE INTERSECTION, THANK GOD I MADE IT THROUGH SAFELY. FROM THIS POINT UNTIL I REACHED HOME, VERY LITTLE BRAKING WAS POSSIBLE, VERY UNSAFE. UPON INSPECTION, THE REAR LINE HAD BURST, REQUIRING $200 IN REPAIRS. A FEW MONTHS EARLIER THE GAS LINE RUSTED THROUGH ALSO, COSTING ANOTHER $200. *TR
OVERHEATED CONNECTOR IN DASH, POSSIBLY LOOSE AT ASSEMBLY. ORIGIN BEHIND INSTRUMENT PANEL, DRIVER SIDE OF DASH. *TR
APPLIED BRAKES TO SLOW DOWN TO MAKE A TURN ONTO ANOTHER ROAD, LOST COMPLETE BRAKE PRESSURE TO LATER FIND STEEL BRAKE LINE ALONG DRIVER'S SIDE FRAME RAIL HAD BURST AND IT WAS NOT THAT CORRODED. I WOULD HAVE HATED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS OCCURS AT A HIGHER SPEED OR EVEN WORSE WHILE TOWING A TRAILER. VEHICLE WENT FROM FULL BRAKES TO AN ALMOST TOTAL LOSS. EVEN THOUGH BRAKES STILL FUNCTION, IT WOULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME AFTER MORITZ CHEVROLET IN FORT WORTH, TEXAS REPLACED A PASSENGERS DOOR MODULE. WHILE DRIVING 5-10 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED DURING LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS AND THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. AFTER I RESTARTED THE TRUCK, THE STEERING WHEEL WENT BACK TO NORMAL. I ALMOST HIT A CURB AFTER MAKING A RIGHT TURN. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY TRUCK, BECAUSE I COULD HAVE BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT IF I WERE GOING ANY FASTER. *TR
WHILE INSPECTING FLUID LEVELS, I NOTICED THE BRAKE LINES WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. I CONTINUED TO INSPECT THE LINES TO THE REAR OF THE TRUCK, THEY TOO WERE SEVERELY RUSTED. WHILE DOING AN ONLINE SEARCH I DISCOVERED MANY OWNERS HAD THE SAME ISSUE. SO NOW I HAD A DECISION TO MAKE, CONTINUE DRIVING THE TRUCK UNTIL THERE WAS A FAILURE OR ARRANGE FOR REPAIRS, INCURRING AN EXPENSE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF GM HAD INSTALLED BETTER QUALITY LINES. TRUCK IS NOW AT A LOCAL GM DEALER BEING REPAIRED. GM NEEDS TO STEP UP AND MAKE THINGS RIGHT !!!! *TR
VEHICLE WAS IN 4 WHEEL DRIVE, WHEN THE WHOLE TRUCK SHUTTERED, I LOST THE DRIVE CAPABILITIES OF THE TRUCK THEN STOPPED AND LOOKED UNDERNEATH VEHICLE TO FIND FLUID COMING OUT OF THE TRANSFER CASE. IN MY CASE THIS HAPPENED ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET, IF IT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED ON HIGHWAY IT COULD HAVE RESULTED IN A VERY BAD ACCIDENT. PLEASE CONTACT ME ON A POSSIBLE RECALL FOR THE TRANSFER CASE. DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND TRUCK JUST STARTS STALLING OUT. GOT IT TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHO SAYS THERE IS RUST IN THE TANK AND THE FUEL FILTER IS FULL OF IT. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS I WAS BARELY ABLE TO GET OFF OF THE ROAD. THESE TRUCKS NEED TO BE RECALLED FOR THE FUEL TANKS. I'VE HAD VEHICLES THAT HAVE NEVER HAD PROBLEMS LIKE THIS WITH THE RUST. THEY AT LEAST NEED TO BE CHECKED OUT. *TR
FORWARD DRIVER'S SIDE BRAKE LINE BROKE RESULTING IN IMMEDIATE LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID AND ALL VEHICLE BRAKING. FORTUNATELY NO ONE WAS IN FRONT OF VEHICLE. PULLED OFF OF ROAD. CAR TOWED. *TR
VEHICLE RESIDES IN "SALT BELT" STATE BUT RARELY DRIVEN IN THE WINTER MONTHS; MAINLY TO LEAVE FOR A 2-MONTH TRIP SOUTH. THANKS TO GOD THAT MY WIFE, OTHERS AND I ESCAPED SERIOUS INJURY. JUST PRIOR TO THIS INCIDENT, VEHICLE WAS AT DEALER FOR REGULAR SERVICE/CHECK. PREVIOUS BRAKE WORK AT 47K MILES IN 02/2010 PADS ON ONE WHEEL COMPLETELY GONE AND PADS ON OTHER WERE WORN TO 1/16? THICK. FRONT PADS AT 85% AT THAT TIME. TECHNICIAN BLAMED ?ROAD SALT?. FILED A COMPLAINT WITH GM BUT ONLY GOT A REMINDER THAT VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. CURRENT INCIDENT OCCURRED 01/11/13 APPROX. 11 MI FROM NASHVILLE, TN. WHILE ON THE FREEWAY, TRAFFIC AHEAD BEGAN SLOWING DOWN FAST. I BEGAN APPLYING THE BRAKES AND WHEN I PUSHED DOWN HARDER TO STOP AS TRAFFIC STOPPED, I HEARD A "SOUND" LIKE A LOW THUMP AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT STRAIGHT TO THE FLOOR. I MANAGED TO WHIP THE TRUCK AROUND THE BACK OF THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME ONTO THE SHOULDER AND AVOID COLLISION, AND FINALLY CAME TO A STOP. I WAS ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT I HAD SOME BRAKING POWER REMAINING, AND WE SLOWLY CONTINUED IN TO NASHVILLE. LOCATED A DEALER WHO INSPECTED THE BRAKES AND SAID FRONT BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY GONE/BRAKE LINE WAS SHOT. IT WAS FRIDAY AFTERNOON, SO IN ADDITION TO THE $2100 IN REPAIRS, WE INCURRED MEAL AND LODGING EXPENSES FOR 3 DAYS/NIGHTS (APPROX. $600), BEFORE THE REPAIR COULD BE COMPLETED ON MONDAY. AGAIN WAS TOLD THAT BRAKE DETERIORATION WAS DUE TO ROAD SALT. I DISAGREE WITH THIS FIRST, VEHICLE IS RARELY DRIVEN IN THE WINTER AND SECOND, I'VE NEVER HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH ANY OTHER VEHICLE IN ALL THE YEARS I'VE LIVED IN "SALT BELT" STATES. I BELIEVE THERE IS AN INHERENT DESIGN DEFICIENCY WITH THE BRAKES IN THIS VEHICLE. I HAVE THE PARTS IF NEEDED FOR INSPECTION. I CAN BE REACHED BY PHONE AT # LISTED IN COMPLAINT THRU 03/15/13. THIS IS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO, REGULAR CAB, 5.3L V-8. IT HAS ABOUT 164500 HIGHWAY MILES. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN WELL CARED FOR. THE BRAKE LINES ROTTED OUT, AND ALMOST CAUSED ME TO HIT OTHER VEHICLES...WITHOUT WARNING. GM WILL NOT OFFER ANY HELP, ALTHOUGH THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM BASED ON RESEARCH AND JUST HEARING OTHERS TELL OF THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM. THEY SHOULD RECALL ALL OF THE VEHICLES THAT HAVE THIS PROBLEM; AND REIMBURSE THOSE WHO HAVE SUFFERED FINANCIAL HARDSHIP REPAIRING AN OBVIOUS FLAW THAT IS A HUGE SAFETY HAZARD. *TR

HAD HOOKED TRUCK TO A CAR TRAILER AND STEPPED ON BRAKES TO PUT TRUCK IN DRIVE AND BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO FLOOR, THERE WAS NO BRAKES AT ALL. UPON EXAMINING I FOUND THAT THREE BRAKE LINES HAD FAILED. THE TRUCK WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL GARAGE AND THEY FOUND THAT ALL BRAKE LINES AND ALSO THE FUEL LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED.
WHILE SLOWING DOWN JUST PRIOR TO COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE WARNING LIGHT/SIGNAL CAME ON. UPON INSPECTION OF THE VEHICLE, BRAKE FLUID WAS SEEN BELOW AND TO THE FRONT OF THE DRIVERS SIDE FLOORBOARD. WHEN TRYING TO MOVE THE VEHICLE AT LOW SPEED (IDLE) TO A SAFE LOCATION, I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO BRAKES. CHEVY'S CLAIM THAT THE "OTHER HALF" OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM WOULD FUNCTION WITH INCREASED STOPPING DISTANCES IS NOT TRUE IN MY CASE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRABLE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND WAS TOWED TO THE LOCAL CHEVY DEALERSHIP IN CORPUS CHRISTI TEXAS (ALLEN SAMUELS CHEVROLET, 361-884-5234). UPON DIAGNOSIS, VICTOR LANDA (SERVICE ADVISOR) INFORMED ME THAT THE BRAKE LINE FAILED DUE TO RUST/CORROSION. FURTHERMORE, HE STATED THAT THIS A PRETTY COMMON PROBLEM DUE TO THE SALTY ENVIRONMENT (GULF COAST OF TEXAS) AND THAT HE HAS A MECHANIC THAT IS GETTING REALLY GOOD AT MAKING REPLACEMENT LINES. UPON INSPECTION, [XXX] INDICATED THAT ALL THE BRAKE LINES ON MY VEHICLE SHOWED EXCESSIVE CORROSION AND SUGGESTED REPLACING THEM ALL FOR SAFETY ALONG WITH THE "CONTROL VALVE". ALL THE LINES WERE CONSTRUCTED BY THE MECHANIC AT A COST OF REPAIR EXCEEDING $1800.00. THE VEHICLE HAS ONLY BEEN ON THE BEACH LESS THAN 8 TIMES TOTAL IN ITS LIFE AND HAS BEEN THOROUGHLY WASHED AFTER EACH VISIT. IT APPEARS, BASED ON INTERNET RESEARCH AND DISCUSSIONS WITH STAFF AT ALLEN SAMUELS CHEVROLET, THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM. SO COMMON THAT THE NHTSA HAS OPENED AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS ON THE PREMATURE BRAKE LINE FAILURE. I HOPE THAT THIS ISSUE IS RESOLVED BY ISSUING A RECALL SO THAT UNDUE REPAIR COSTS ARE NOT PASSED ON TO THE CONSUMER FOR "FAULTY" BRAKE EQUIPMENT. CHECKED THE UNDERCARRIAGE AND FOUND A MAJOR BRAKE FLUID LEAK FROM THE REAR DRIVER SIDE BRAKE LINE. ALSO DISCOVERED THAT ALL OF THE BRAKE LINES WERE RUSTED AND CORRODED. BRAKE LINES, GAS LINE, TRANSMISSION FLUID LINES ALL RUSTED/CORRODED BEGINNING AT UNDER 50,000 MILES. * HAD NEAR ACCIDENTS AS THE BRAKE LINES BLEW WHILE DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AND WAS DECELERATING IN AN ATTEMPT TO COME TO A STOP..PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR, I CONTINUED ON (FOOT OFF THE GAS) UNTIL THE TRUCK SLOWED DOWN ENOUGH ON IT'S OWN, SHIFTED INTO LOW GEAR & WAS ABLE TO COME TO A STOP AND GET TOWED. * SHORTLY AFTER BRAKE LINE INCIDENT, THE SAME THING WITH THE GAS LINE, RUSTED/CORRODED AND LEAKED GASOLINE WHEN IGNITION WAS ON AND PUMP WAS RUNNING... TOWED * A FEW ,MONTHS LATER, I WAS PARKING THE TRUCK AND FLUID STARTED SPEWING FROM UNDER THE TRUCK - AFTER CLOSE EXAMINATION I DETERMINED IT WAS TRANSMISSION FLUID, THE LINES HAD RUSTED/CORRODED - AGAIN,TOWED. * REAR BUMPER ROTTED OUT COMPLETELY BEFORE HITTING 35,000 MILES- I HAD IT REPLACED, NOW THE WHEELS AND SIDE QUARTER PANELS AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN ARE ALSO ROTTING OUT. * CURRENTLY THE DASH LIGHTS/PANEL WILL INTERMITTENTLY BEGIN TO FLASH - THE WHOLE DASH GOES BLANK, LIGHTS OFF, THEN THEY COME BACK ON, WHILE DRIVING! **MY MECHANIC RECENTLY TOLD ME AFTER STATE INSPECTION, THAT THE FRAME IS THE NEXT THING TO GO, IT IS RUSTING OUT MORE THAN EXPECTED FOR A VEHICLE OF IT'S AGE/LOW MILEAGE. UPON INSPECTION FOUND RESERVOIR EMPTY AND FLUID LEAKING FROM RUPTURED RUSTED LINE ON LEFT SIDE OF VEHICLE AT DRIVERS DOOR. INSPECTION FOUND MANY AREAS OF THE LINES BADLY RUSTED. *TR
I WAS DRIVING MY 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO ON A RURAL BUT RESIDENTIAL ROAD WITH A STEEP DECLINE AT ABOUT 35 MPH. I ATTEMPTED TO SLOW DOWN BUT WHEN I STEPPED ON THE BRAKE PEDAL IT WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE SERVICE BRAKES LIGHT CAME ON. IT FELT LIKE THERE WAS AIR IN THE BRAKE LINES SO I ATTEMPTED PUMPING THE BRAKES HOPING TO PREVENT ANY MORE ACCELERATION DOWN THE HILL AND THAT IS ABOUT ALL I GOT. I COULD NOT STOP AND HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO RIDE IT OUT UNTIL I CROSSED THE BRIDGE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL AND STARTED UP THE OTHER SIDE.WHEN MY TRUCK FINALY CAME TO A STOP I QUIKLY PUT IT IN PARK TO PREVENT IT FROM ROLLING BACKWARDS DOWN THE HILL. I POPPED THE HOOD AND GOT OUT. I CHECKED THE BRAKE FLUID AND IT WAS ALMOST FULL SO I DIDN'T KNOW HOW AIR COULD GET IN THE BRAKE LINES.UNFORTUNATELY IT WAS SNOWING OUT SO I COULDN'T TELL IF I HAD A LEAK. ONCE HOME I WAS ABLE TO HAVE MY WIFE PRESS ON THE BRAKES WHILE LYING UNDER THE TRUCK AND I FOUND THAT THE BRAKE LINE SUPPLYING THE REAR BRAKES WAS RUSTED OUT AND HAD A SEVERE LEAK. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED A FEW MINUTES LATER I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A STATE HIGHWAY DOING 45 TO 50 MPH WITH OTHER VEHICLES. WHY ISN'T CHEVY/GM BEING MADE TO FIX THESE PROBLEMS ? *TR

WHILE BACKING OUT OF DRIVEWAY THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. UPON INVESTIGATION A RUPTURED BRAKE LINE WAS FOUND. ALL THE LINES WERE VERY RUSTY. TWO SECTIONS WERE REPLACED TO GET THE VEHICLE ON THE ROAD AGAIN AND MOST OF THE REST WILL NEED REPLACED BEFORE THE VEHICLE CAN BE TRUST WORTHY. I WAS PULLING A TRAILER FULL OF FIREWOOD OUT OF A PASTURE AND THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE SERVICE BRAKE SYSTEM LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH. AFTER NOTICING A GAS LEAK, I ASKED MY FATHER TO DRIVE MY TRUCK TO THE DEALERSHIP FOR REPAIR. WHEN HE PUT THE TRUCK INTO REVERSE HE HAD NO BRAKES AND HAD TO USE THE EMERGENCY BRAKE BEFORE ROLLING INTO MY MOTHER'S CAR BEHIND HIM. UPON INSPECTION BY THE DEALERSHIP, ALL OF MY BRAKE LINES AND GAS LINES WERE BADLY RUSTED AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. UPON RESEARCH I FOUND THIS PROBLEM QUITE WIDESPREAD AND EXPENSIVE, NOT TO MENTION THE CRITICAL SAFETY ISSUES INVOLVED. I DO WANT TO KNOW THAT CHEVROLET/GM IS CONCERNED ABOUT OUR SAFETY AND IS ADDRESSING THIS PROBLEM.
