JUST 100 MILES AFTER PCM WAS REPLACED , OUT OF WARRANTY, ENGINE WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. SINCE UNABLE TO GET TO DEALERSHIP FAST ENOUGH I DID SOME RESEARCH IN MY MANUAL, WHICH STATED THAT IF I SHUT DOWN VEHICLE AND LIGHT GOES OFF THEN PROBABLY NOTHING MAJOR TO WORRY ABOUT. INTERMITTENTLY THE LIGHT HAS CAME ON, THEN GONE OFF FOR THE PAST 4000 MILES. SO WITH MY OIL CHANGE, HAD DEALERSHIP RUN TEST ON DIAGNOSTICS, FOUND BAD CATALYTIC CONVERTER. COST OF REPAIR, $ 862. WELL, I DON'T HAVE THAT KIND OF MONEY JUST FLOATING AROUND. THEREFORE, I COULDN'T GET IT DONE THIS TIME AROUND. SO I DON'T HAVE THAT FIXED. I WAS TOLD GM GIVES UP TO 80,000 WARRANTY ON THE PCM MODULE AND THE CATALYTIC CONVERTER. STRANGE HOW THE LIGHT CAME ON JUST 100 MILES OVER THE LAST WORK DONE. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING TO ME AND MY TRUCK? *AK
TRUCK DIED. LOST DASHBOARD FUNCTIONS, NO ENGINE CRANK, PCM FAILURE. HAD TO HAVE TOWED FROM SIDE OF EXPRESSWAY TO DEALERSHIP FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. FOUND OUT PCM WAS BAD ,AND HAD TO REPLACED. RARITY, BUT COINCIDENTAL WHEN IT HAPPENED JUST 217 MILES OVER THE 80,000 MILE GM WARRANTY TIME FRAME. IT WAS ALMOST A $800 BILL THAT I HAD TO FORK OUT SINCE THERE WAS NO MORE WARRANTY.*AK
THE CENTER REAR SEATBELT RETRACTOR WILL NO LONGER RETRACT ON MY 2003 CHEVROLET HD PICKUP TRUCK. THIS SEATBELT WAS USED BY MY CHILD. LUCKILY WE WERE PARKED WHEN WE DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM AND HAD TO MOVE HER TO THE OUTBOARD POSITION. WE PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE NEW. WHILE HAVING IT CHECKED AT THE DEALERSHIP, THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL ADVISED THAT ANOTHER OWNER CAME IN WITH THE SAME PROBLEM AND AFTER JERKING ON THE SEATBELT SEVERAL TIMES, THE RETRACTOR BEGAN WORKING AGAIN. I HAVE ORDERED A NEW SEATBELT RETRACTOR FOR THE REAR CENTER POSITION, BUT WANTED TO REPORT THIS DEFECT. *JB
WE HAVE A 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO WITH 58,000 MILES. THERE IS A LOUD CLUNKING SOUND COMING FROM THE STEERING SHAFT. WHEN I ASKED ABOUT IT I WAS TOLD IT COULD BE GREASED BUT THE NOISE WOULD RETURN. MY SON IS AN AUTO SALESMAN AND HAS TALKED TO OTHER PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM OR HAVE HAD THE STEERING SHAFT REPLACED. SHOULD NOT THE DEALER OR GM IN PARTICULAR BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS REPAIR. *TR
2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD SPEEDOMETER DOESN'T RETURN TO ZERO WHEN STOPPED. REGISTERS INACCURATE READINGS AS MUCH AS 60 MPH OFF. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. IN 2007, A PROFESSIONAL TECHNICIAN INFERRED THAT THE ROTORS MAY POTENTIALLY FAIL. ONE YEAR LATER, THE CONTACT NOTICED THAT WHEN TRYING TO STOP THE VEHICLE, THE BRAKE SYSTEM PERFORMED HORRIBLY. AFTER CAREFULLY INSPECTING THE VEHICLE, HE NOTICED THAT THERE WAS EXCESSIVE RUST ON THE BRAKE ROTORS. HE IS IN THE PROCESS OF REPLACING THE ROTORS HIMSELF. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT HAVE NOT CONCLUDED THAT THE COMPONENT WAS DEFECTIVE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 73,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 75,000.
TOOK 2003 SILVERADO IN TO DEALERSHIP TO HAVE COMPUTER UPDATED, EVER SINCE THEN I HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE SPEEDOMETER. IT IS ERRATIC, AND DISPLAYS SPEEDS MUCH HIGHER THAN ACTUAL SPEED. I AM ABLE TO TURN IGNITION ON AND OFF TO GET IT TO RESET BACK TO ZERO, BUT THAT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY WHEN TRAVELING DOWN THE FREEWAY.*AK
SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE STICKS AND GIVES INACURATE SPEED. CAN CAUSE ACCIDENT DUE TO WRONG SPEED. I PERSONALLY FIND MYSELF LOKKING IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR TO TRY TO KEEP THE PROPER SPEED. VEY DANGEROUS FOR MY FAMILY. *AK
THE DASH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL ON MY 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO WENT OUT. NONE OF MY GAUGES A FUNCTIONAL. NOT EVEN THE GAS GAUGE. I'M AFRAID IF I RUN OUT OF GAS IN HEAVY TRAFFIC, THERE COULD BE A SERIOUS INJURY. I GOT A LETTER FROM GM, THEY SAY ITS A KNOWN PROBLEM, BUT WONT RECALL THE PART. THEY ONLY FIX IT FOR YOU IF YOU ARE UNDER 70,000. MINE WENT OUT AT 70,000 SO THEY WILL NOT RECALL OR REPAIR. IF ITS A KNOWN PROBLEM, IT SHOULD BE RECALLED. THE TRANSMISSION/DRIVE LINE SHIFTS HARD AND SEEMS TO BE IN A BIND DURING SHIFTING OPERATIONS. THERE ARE LOUD BANGING NOISES COMING FROM THE DRIVELINE/AXLES. THERE ALSO NOW SEEMS TO BE FLUID LEAKAGE FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT AXLE HOUSING. I CHECKED THE FLUID LEVEL AND HAD TO ADD ONE PINT OF AXLE OIL TO THE AXLE UNIT. *TR
TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO WITH 11830 FAILURE MILEAGE AT 65 MPH THE SPEEDOMETER READ 120 MPH. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER, WHO DETERMINED THAT THERE WAS AN INTERNAL FAILURE OF THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN REPAIRED. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 12,000.*AK UPDATE *4/23/07TR
ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER, READS ANYWHERE FROM 35 MPH TO OVER 120 MPH AT ALL TIMES. *JB

SPEEDOMETER READING IS ERRATIC AT BEST. PROBLEM IS GETTING WORSE. NEEDLE STARTS OFF AT BETWEEN 20-60 MPH. RETURNS TO ZERO SOMETIMES. SOMETIMES IT MOVES. SOMETIMES IT IS JUST STUCK. HAVE HEARD FROM NUMEROUS OTHER PEOPLE EXPERIENCING SIMILAR PROBLEMS. *JB
AT 74,500 MILES A RUMBLING NOISE INITIALLY OCCURRED AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND ONLY INTERMITTENTLY. AFTER ABOUT 3 WEEKS THE RUMBLE OCCURRED MOST OF THE TIME AND WAS MOST NOTICED AROUND 45 MPH. THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL WAS FOUND TO WORN AND REPLACED AT 75,500 MILES. *JB
STEERING COLUMN SHAFT IS POORLY DESIGNED, AND DEGRADES QUICKLY. MAINTENANCE MUST BE DONE FREQUENTLY BY AN EXPERIENCED TECHNICIAN, THUS MAKING IT VERY EXPENSIVE. LUBRICATING THE SHAFT ONLY WORKS TEMPORARILY. THE SHAFT REQUIRED REPLACEMENT BEFORE 70,000 MILES. *TR

I HAVE A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 HD WITH A SPEEDOMETER THAT WORKS ERRATICALLY. IT SEEMS THAT THE SPEEDOMETER SELECTS A RANDOM "OFFSET" BETWEEN 0-65 MPH AND THEN OPERATES LINEARLY WITH THAT OFFSET UNTIL AT SOME RANDOM TIME IT CHOOSES A NEW OFFSET. FOR EXAMPLE, THE SPEEDOMETER MAY SAY 50 MPH WHEN I'M STOPPED, THEN 110 MPH WHEN I'M DOING 60 MPH (VERIFIED BY PORTABLE GPS). THEN THE NEXT TIME I DRIVE THE TRUCK THE OFFSET HAS CHANGED TO 20 MPH. OR WHILE I'M DRIVING THE OFFSET MAY CHANGE. I'VE DISCOVERED VIA THE INTERNET THAT NUMEROUS SILVERADO OWNERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM AND DEALERS WANT ABOUT $500 TO REPAIR. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS I CANNOT BE CERTAIN AT WHAT SPEED I'M DRIVING.*JB

SPEEDOMETER FAILS TO FUNCTION - WILL BE TRAVELING DOWN THE ROAD AND IT RANGES FROM 0-120 MPH WHEN I ESTIMATE I AM ACTUALLY TRAVELING 35 MPH(ESTIMATED OBVIOUSLY). HAS HAPPENED ON 3 OCCASIONS AND IN NOW NON-FUNCTIONING. DEALERSHIP RECOMMENDS REPLACING INSTRUMENT CLUSTER - AND ADMITS TO A RASH OF THESE REPLACEMENTS ON THESE TRUCKS. *NM
DURING NORMAL HIGHWAY AND OR CITY DRIVING, THE SPEEDOMETER WILL REGISTER A RATE OF SPEED HIGHER THEN ACTUAL. THIS SPEED HAS BEEN RECORDED AS ANYWHERE FROM 5 TO 50 MPH HIGH. WHEN THE SPEEDOMETER IS READING HIGH, UPON STOPPING, THE SPEEDOMETER WILL REMAIN AT THE AMOUNT OF SPEED THAT IT IS REGISTERING HIGH. FOR EXAMPLE, IF TRAVELING AT 30 MPH AND THE SPEEDOMETER READS 50 MPH, WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED, THE SPEEDOMETER WILL STILL READ 20 MPH. ONCE THIS PROBLEM STARTS, IT IS VERY CONSISTENT ON ITS REGULARITY. A SIMPLE SOLUTION IS TO REPEATEDLY TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND RESTART IT. THE SPEEDOMETER WILL DROP 5 MPH WITH EACH CYCLE UNTIL IT REACHES 0 MPH. HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM WILL LIKELY REOCCUR ON THE TRIP THAT I AM ABOUT TO MAKE. MY COWORKER IS HAVING THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM IN A VERY SIMILAR VEHICLE. UPON CONTACTING THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT MY LOCAL DEALERSHIP, I WAS TOLD THIS PROBLEM HAD BEEN SEEN ON OTHER OCCASIONS AND THE SOLUTION IS TO REPLACE THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AT AN APPROXIMATE COST OF $600.00. *JB
SPEEDOMETER STOPPED WORKING AT 53000 MILES. APPARENTLY, ALL INTERNAL PARTS. MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE SAME SITUATION. THIS TYPE OF PART SHOULD NOT FAIL UNTIL 300,000 + MILES OR 25 YEARS! MOST PEOPLE ARE QUOTED (AND PAID) $500 - $1,000 TO REPAIR THE PROBLEM. I'VE GOT A CALL IN TO GM DEALER, BUT HAVEN'T HEARD BACK YET. *JB
I CURRENTLY OWN A 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO AND MY SPEEDOMETER AND TACHOMETER CURRENTLY DO NOT WORK. I CONTACTED THE DEALER AND THEY MENTIONED THAT IT IS COMMON BUT THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT PANEL NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. ($500) I ASKED WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM AND WAS TOLD THAT A PLASTIC GEAR WEARS OUT. AFTER SEARCHING THE INTERNET THERE IS A LOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS PROBLEM. *JB
REPORT CONCERNING 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO. HAD TRUCK FAILURE ON LOCAL FREEWAY. HAD VEHICLE TOWED TO MECHANIC. APPARENTLY OUT OF GAS. HOWEVER GAS GAGE READ 1/2 TANK. HUGE SAFETY ISSUE. SHORTLY THEREAFTER SPEEDOMETER BEGAN MALFUNCTIONING, REGISTERING IN ACCURATE SPEEDS AND WHEN VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF SPEEDOMETER WOULD STOP ANYWHERE FROM 10-20 MPH. STARTER BEGAN GIVING US PROBLEMS AS WELL. COULD THIS ALL BE RELATED? *NM
THE SPEEDOMETER IN MY 2003 SILVERADO HD CREWCAB 4X4 HAS BROKE. THE INDICATOR (NEEDLE) IS NOW ON THE EXTREME RIGHT OF THE GAUGE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THIS ISSUE IS COMMON AND THE STEPPER MOTOR WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. TO DO THIS THE ENTIRE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED. *NM
WHILE DRIVING OVER 55 MPH THE SPEEDOMETER STICKS AND JUMPS UP AND DOWN. FINALLY STOPS WORKING AND NEEDLE POINTS DOWN. NO WAY OF JUDGING SPEED. HAD IT REPROGRAMMED AT COST OF 10.00, DIDN'T FIX PROBLEM. HAD A GAGE CLUSTER ORDER AND INSTALLED AT COST OF 300.00. THIS IS CLEARLY A DEFECT IN CLUSTER IN A LOT OF TRUCKS AND SHOULD BE REPAIRED AT NO COST TO OWNER. MY TRUCK HAD 30,650 MILES ON IT WHEN THIS HAPPENED. *NM

I FILED THE FORMAL REQUEST BELOW TO CHEVROLET / GM REGARDING A DEFECTIVE SPEEDOMETER IN MY 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THIS IS A WELL KNOWN AND A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM, AND I BELIEVE IT TO BE A SEVERE NATIONWIDE SAFETY ISSUE WHICH NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED TO AVOID POSSIBLE INJURY OR DEATH. GENERAL MOTORS WILL NOT REPAIR THE PROBLEM. SOME INFORMATION IS REMOVED TO MEET THE WORD LIMIT OF THIS COMPLAINT FORM. GM SERVICE REQUEST: 71-482347989 SILVERADO SAFETY HAZARD - A PROBLEM I AM EXPERIENCING WITH MY WIFE'S 2003 SILVERADO 2500 HD IS EXTENSIVE AND DANGEROUS. THE SPEEDOMETER IS OFTEN STUCK AT RANDOM SPEEDS WHEN AT REST, AND WHEN IN MOTION IS UNRELIABLE. INFORMATION THAT I HAVE REVIEWED ON SEVERAL SITES INDICATES THAT THERE IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE STEPPER MOTORS IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER THAT HANDLE ALL GAUGES ON THIS VEHICLE, AND THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL TSBS THAT ARE RELATED TO THIS PROBLEM IN SEVERAL GM VEHICLES. NHTSA ALSO HAS SEVERAL DOZEN, IF NOT HUNDREDS OF REPORTS OF THIS PROBLEM. THERE ARE ALSO SEVERAL PETITIONS IN PROGRESS TO DEMAND RECALLS AND / OR MEDIA INVESTIGATIONS. ALTHOUGH MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THIS APPEARS TO BE A DEFECT WORTHY OF A RECALL. WE SPECIFICALLY TRADED UP TO THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE WIFE HAULS A HORSE TRAILER WITH TWO OR THREE HORSES THROUGH MOUNTAINOUS TERRAIN TO HORSE EVENTS FOR HER, MY DAUGHTER, AND MY DAUGHTER'S FRIENDS. THE SAFETY IMPLICATIONS OF UNRELIABLE GAUGES ARE MANY-FOLD, WHETHER IT IS GATHERING TOO MUCH DOWNHILL SPEED BECAUSE OF AN INCORRECT SPEEDOMETER, RUNNING OUT OF GAS WHILE TOWING A LOADED HORSE TRAILER DOWN A STEEP SLOPE BECAUSE OF AN INCORRECT GAUGE, OVERHEATING THE TRANSMISSION OR ENGINE BECAUSE OF AN INCORRECT TEMPERATURE READING, ETC. THERE ARE SEVERAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION DOCUMENTING THIS ISSUE. TL*- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING THE 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO WITH 25000 FAILURE MILEAGE AT 5 MPH, AND SLOWING DOWN TO STOP THE ANTI- LOCK BRAKES STARTED TO PULSATE/JERK. THE CONTACT PRESSED HARD ON THE BRAKE PEDAL, THEN THE VEHICLE FINALLY STOPPED. THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN TAKEN TO A DEALER, AND THE VEHICLE HAD NOT BEEN REPAIRED AS OF 3/8/07. MY 03 CHEVY SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER IS ACTING ERRATICALLY. IT HAS BECOME STUCK AT 60 MPH WHEN AT A FULL STAND STILL STOP. THE PROBLEM HAS NOT GONE AWAY AND IS CAUSING ME MUCH CONCERN WHEN TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY. *JB

I HAVE A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. THE SPEEDOMETER WILL GO ALL THE WAY TO 120 MPH AND STICK THERE. SOMETIMES IT WILL FALL BACK TO AROUND 80 BUT IT WILL NOT READ CORRECTLY. AFTER STARTING THE VEHICLE ABOUT 10-15 TIMES IT WILL RESET TO 0 AND THE DO IT AGAIN. *TR
I HAVE A 2003 CHEV. 2500 4X4 EST. CAB LONG BOX. IT HAS 18000 MILES ON IT. I HAD TO REPLACE THE REAR BRAKES AND ROTORS AT 18000 MILES. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR A TRUCK OF THIS TYPE. (HEAVY DUTY). I ALSO HAD A DIM BRAKE LIGHT ON THE DASH, WHICH I HAD CHECKED OUT AT THE DEALER. THEY SAID IT WAS IN THE DASH BOARD AND WOULD COST 400.00+ TO FIX. THE DEALER ALSO SAID THE STEERING WAS LOOSE AND THIS WAS CAUSED BY THE FACTORY WHEN INSTALLED, 250.00+ TO FIX. WHAT KIND OF PRODUCT ARE THEY MAKING? *NM
SPEEDOMETER STICKS AT VARIOUS READINGS AND IS RARELY ACCURATE. I HAVE ALREADY RECEIVED ONE TICKET ($140). I AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE SAFETY FACTORS INVOLVED WITH THIS PROBLEM AND THINK GM SHOULD BE FORCED TO DO A RECALL. ALSO TODAY, MY WINDSHIELD WIPERS WOULD NOT TURN OFF. (HAD TO PULL THE FUSE) I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE FOUND THAT NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN ISSUED ABOUT BOTH OF THESE PROBLEMS. SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT THIS. I HAVE DOCUMENTED ALL OF THIS AND KEPT COPIES OF ALL COMPLAINTS AND EMAILS. JUST TO HAVE SOMETHING TO FALL BACK ON WHEN MY WIPERS GO OUT AND I GET INTO AN ACCIDENT. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE. I CAN ASSURE YOU THAT MY NEXT TRUCK WON'T BE "MADE IN AMERICA" I CONTACTED DEALER AND THEY ASSURED ME THEY COULD REPAIR IT FOR UNDER 1000.00 WOW, WHAT A BARGAIN CONSIDERING IT SHOULD BE A RECALL. TL* THE CONTACTS OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500 HD. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SMOKE WAS EMITTING OUT OF THE CENTER OF THE AIR VENT DUCT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER. THE TECHNICIAN WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 68,403 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 150,000.
