2003 CHEVY SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER NOT WORKING. STICKS. SOMETIMES WORKS. DEALER SAID $500 TO FIX. KNOW 3 OTHER 03-04 SILVERADO OWNERS WITH SAME PROBLEM. *NM
SPEEDOMETER IS ALL MESSED UP IT HAS INACCURATE READINGS MOST OF THE TIME AND DOESN'T WORK AT ALL THE REST OF THE TIME. THE DEALER CLAIMS NO RESPONSIBILITY AND IS ASKING $500.00 TO FIX. MY DAUGHTER RECENTLY NOTIFIED ME THAT A LOCAL NEWS STATION HAD MANY CONSUMERS COMPLAINING OF THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND THAT SOME OF THEM HAD RECEIVED SPEEDING TICKETS WHEN THEIR SPEEDOMETER FAILED. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT GM NEEDS TO ADDRESS. *JB
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE INSTRUMENT PANEL GAUGES DISPLAYED INACCURATE READINGS. THE DEALER STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE THAT THE FAILURE MAY OCCUR IN SOME 2003-2004 CADILLAC, CHEVROLET, AND GMC VEHICLES. HOWEVER, BECAUSE HIS VEHICLE WAS OVER 70,000 MILES, HE WOULD HAVE TO REPAIR IT AT HIS OWN EXPENSE. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. HE FILED A FORMAL COMPLAINT WITH THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 81,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 55-60 MPH HE NOTICED THAT THE SPEEDOMETER WAS NO LONGER WORKING AND DISPLAYED ZERO. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHO WAS DIAGNOSING THE FAILURE WHEN THE COMPLAINT WAS FILED. THE INSTRUMENT PANEL WAS REPLACED IN 2007. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CALLED AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO TO ASSIST WITH THE REPAIR COST. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 140,000. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 150,000. ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER READINGS. DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AT 55 MPH WITH CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED. POSTED SPEED LIMIT INCREASED TO 65. USED THE CRUISE CONTROL TO INCREMENT MY SPEED. SPEED INCREASED, SPEEDOMETER READING DID NOT INCREASE, BUT KEPT GETTING LOWER. STAYED WITH SPEED OF TRAFFIC BUT SPEEDOMETER READING SLOWLY FELL TO 35 MPH. STOPPED, SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE AND WAITED 5 MINUTES. UPON RESTART, SPEEDOMETER APPEARED TO BE FUNCTIONING CORRECTLY. GOT BACK ON THE INTERSTATE AND UP TO 65 MPH. WHEN I DECELERATED WHILE EXITING THE INTERSTATE, THE SPEEDOMETER REMAINED AT 65 MPH. PARKED IN MY DRIVEWAY, THE SPEEDOMETER READS 65 MPH. WHEN DRIVEN, SPEEDOMETER INCREASES IMMEDIATELY FROM 65 MPH AND HIGHER. *NM
I HAVE A 2003 CHEVY SILVERADO 1500 HD WITH APPROX 55,000 MILES ON IT. WITHOUT NOTICE THE SPEEDOMETER FAILED TO WORK (NEEDLE IS FIXED BETWEEN 60-120 MPH). AFTER RESEARCHING THIS PROBLEM ON THE INTERNET, I DISCOVERED THAT MANY COMPLAINTS HAVE BEEN LEVIED (IN AT LEAST AN INFORMAL SETTING). *NM
STEERING WHEEL KNOCK CAUSE BY INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT. THE SHAFT WAS REPLACED AT 18,013 MILES AND FAILED AGAIN AT 31,000 MILES. GM HAS KNOW ABOUT THIS FLAW SINCE 1999 AND HAS NO KNOWN PERMANENT REPAIR. *JB
TL* - THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO. WHILE DRIVING THE SPEEDOMETER WILL GIVE FAULTY READINGS. AT ONE POINT, CONTACT WAS DRIVING 25 MPH AND THE SPEEDOMETER READ 120 MPH. IN ORDER TO GET THE VEHICLE TO STOP GIVING FAULTY READINGS CONTACT HAS TO STOP THE VEHICLE, SHUT IT OFF AND RESTART THE VEHICLE, THIS PROCEDURE ONLY FIXED THE PROBLEM TEMPORARILY. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY STATED THAT THEY COULD'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. *AK

03 CHEV. SILVERADO 57,000 MILES, PURCHASED NEW BY MYSELF.BROUGHT TO DEALER DUE TO BRAKE WEAR INDICATOR NOISE @ 32,000 MILES. HAD TO HAVE ALL FOUR ROTORS AND EIGHT PADS REPLACED DUE TO EXTREME RUST . TOO BAD TO TURN DOWN . I WAS TOLD THAT WAS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THAT TRUCK .$900.00 REPAIR. AT 52,000 MILES ABS SENSORS STARTED MALFUNCTIONING AT LOW SPEEDS , AGAIN RUST CAUSING SENSORS TO LIFT FROM HUB AND MISREAD INDICATOR, $600.00 REPAIR. 57,000 MILES RUST AGAIN STRIKES , ALL BRAKE LINES ON VEHICLE ARE RUSTED SO BADLY THEY ARE FLAKING AWAY MATERIAL AND PRODUCED A MAJOR BRAKE LINE LEAK WHERE THE LINES CROSS THE FRAME ABOVE THE FUEL FILTER. CAN'T WAIT TO GET THE BILL ON THIS AS ALL THE FITTINGS ARE BADLY RUSTED AS WELL. AMAZING THAT THERE IS NO CARRYOVER IN PARTS FROM 02 TO 03 YET THE SAME PROBLEMS EXIST REPEATEDLY. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 1500. WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE, VOLTAGE GAUGE, AND SPEEDOMETER FAILED. THE VIN WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 93,000 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 83,000.
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500 HD. WHEN DRIVING IN REVERSE OR MAKING LEFT AND RIGHT TURNS AT VARIOUS SPEEDS, THE STEERING WHEEL MAKES A LOUD CRACKLING NOISE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTO GARAGE. THE FAILURE WAS DIAGNOSED AS THE LOWER STEERING COLUMN SHAFT AND THE COLUMN FLEX COUPLING, IN WHICH THE MECHANIC REPLACED BOTH. THE MANUFACTURER STATED THAT THEY WERE AWARE OF THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 46,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 61,804. UPDATED 06/25/08 *BF

ONE DAY GAUGE CLUSTER ABRUPTLY STOPPED WORKING WHILE I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY. AND SPEEDOMETER SHOWED A READING OF 0.0 MPH. *AK

2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO 2500HD 4X4 PICK-UP TRUCK WITH ERRATIC SPEEDOMETER READINGS. SPEEDOMETER WILL READ 20-70 MPH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STOPPED, AND WILL EITHER READ 120 MPH OR 0 MPH AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ABSOLUTELY A SAFETY PROBLEM, AS THE SPEEDOMETER IS UNRELIABLE. *NM

WHILE DRIVING 70 MPH THE SPEEDOMETER DISPLAYED BETWEEN 120 AND 140 MPH, AND DIDN'T CHANGE WHEN THE CONTACT IS DECREASING SPEED OR DRIVING THE ACTUAL SPEED. THE SPEEDOMETER RAPIDLY CHANGES SPEED AND DIDN'T REGISTER THE CORRECT SPEED. THE CONTACT CALLED THE MANUFACTURER TO FILE A COMPLAINT, AND WAS ADVISED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THEY COULD DO SINCE THERE WERE NO RELATED RECALLS. THE FAILURE OCCURRED PERIODICALLY FOR 2 WEEKS. SPEEDOMETER ON 2003 SILVERADO FAILED WHILE DRIVING TO WORK. GLANCED DOWN AT THE INSTRUMENT PANEL AND NOTICED THAT I WAS TRAVELING 120 MPH IN A SCHOOL ZONE!!!!....OBVIOUSLY AN ERROR. THE SPEEDO NEEDLE IS GITTERY AND THE INSTRUMENT PANEL FLICKERS. I'M GRAVELY CONCERNED THAT I NO LONGER KNOW HOW FAST/SLOW I'M DRIVING. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AND MUST BE ADDRESSED/RESOLVED. *NM

SPEEDOMETER IS READING 20 OR 40 OR 120 OR 70 NO MATTER IF YOU ARE SITTING STILL, GOING 50. IT DOES NOT MATTER THE SPEEDOMETER IS ALL OVER THE PLACE. *NM
I HAVE A 2003 CHEVROLET P/U AND THE SPEEDOMETER WORKS VERY ERRATICALLY. IT USUALLY REGISTERS A MUCH FASTER SPEED THAN I AN TRAVELING. WHEN I AM STOPPED IT WILL SHOW A SPEED OF FORTY OR FIFTY MPH. THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO COME AND GO. IT IS VERY UNSAFE TO NOT KNOW YOUR SPEED. I KNOW MANY OTHER GM AND CHEVROLET VEHICLES OF THIS YEAR EXPERIENCE THE SAME PROBLEM. *NM

THE REAR BRAKES ARE PREMATURELY WEARING OUT AND HAVE BEEN REPLACED THREE TIMES WITH LESS THAN 40,000 MILES. MY ABS SENSORS HAD TO BE REPLACED ALSO. CHEVROLET IS OBVIOUSLY AWARE OF THE DESIGN FLAWS OF THESE TYPE OF VEHICLES, BASED ON THE NUMBER OF ONLINE COMPLAINTS I HAVE READ REGARDING THE DISC BRAKE SYSTEM OF 2002-2004 PICKUP TRUCKS. CHEVROLET WENT BACK TO DRUM BRAKES ON THE REAR FOR 06 DUE TO THE PROBLEMS, BUT THEY WILL NOT RECALL OR WARRANTY ANY OF THE PROBLEMS. *JB

DT: THE CONTACT STATED AFTER STARTING THE ENGINE, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE ALERTED. THE DEALER DISCOVERED A MOUSE HAD STRIPPED THROUGH THE INSULATION AND CHEWED THROUGH THE WIRES UNDER THE FUSE BOX. UPDATED 01/10/07. *JB
MY CHEVROLET 2500HD BEGAN MAKING NOISE FROM THE FRONT END AT 67,500 MILES. THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL BEARING ASSEMBLY FAILED, THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT INVOLVED. THE WORN ASSEMBLY IS AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION. ACCORDING TO THE REPAIR SHOP THIS A QUITE COMMON FAILURE IN THE 2500HD. HAD THIS BEEN A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, THE RESULTS VERY WELL COULD HAVE BEEN INSURMOUNTABLE. THE ASSEMBLY CONTAINS NON GREASE SEALED BEARINGS THAT SHOULD NOT FAIL AT THIS RATE. *JB

I HAVE LOOKED ON THE INTERNET AND HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE WITH THE SAME ISSUE WITH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER PANEL. I THINK GM SHOULD HAVE A FULL RECALL. WHOLE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY GOING 70 MPH, MY SPEEDOMETER STUCK AT 70, THEN STARTED GOING UP UNTIL IT TOPPED OUT. I PANICKED AND PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. WHEN I SHUT THE TRUCK OFF THE SPEEDOMETER STOPPED GOING DOWN AT 65 MPH. I HAD TO START AND STOP THE ENGINE REPEATEDLY AND THE SPEEDOMETER WENT DOWN IN 5 MPH INTERVALS. I'VE HEARD FROM SEVERAL PEOPLE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND IT COST THEM BETWEEN $350 AND $450. I CANNOT AFFORD THIS SO WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN I HAVE TO PULL OFF TO THE SIDE OFF THE ROAD AND START AND STOP THE CAR UNTIL IT RESETS. *JB
IT WAS FIRST IN WINTER OF 2006 THAT IT FIRST HAPPEN, THE SPEEDOMETER SHOWED THAT I WAS GOING 20 MPH WHEN I STOPPED THE TRUCK, BUT IT RESET ITSELF WHEN I WENT AND STARTED IT THE NEXT TIME, AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS STRANGE I HAD ABOUT 60K ON THE TRUCK. IN THE SUMMER OF 2007 GOT LETTER SAYING THAT IF INTERMENT PANEL GAUGES BECOME INOPERATIVE TO BRING IT IN, AS LONG AS THE MILEAGE IS LESS THAT 70K, I CHECKED AND MINE WAS 77K SO DIDN?T BRING IT IN. THIS MALFUNCTION DIDN?T HAPPEN AGAIN TILL THE WINTER OF 2007 WHEN IT HAPPENED ABOUT A DOZEN TIME, THIS TIME TOOK IT IN TO SEE IF THEY WOULD REPLACE IT, BUT THEY SAID IT WAS OVER THE LIMIT, (70K) AND IT WOULD COST ME $550 TO REPLACE. I BELIEVE THAT IT IS A DANGER FOR GM TO HAVE VEHICLE BEING DRIVEN ON THE HIGHWAY THAT ARE NOT OPERATING SAFELY. *RED. *TR
2003 CHEVY SILVERADO, 56,8000 MILES. SPEEDOMETER WAS TACKING AT 50 MPH. IS NOW WORKING BACKWARDS FROM 140 MPH GOING ONLY AS FAR AS 80 MPH. CALLED DEALER, SAID NO RECALL. SAID IT WOULD COST $600 TO REPLACE "BUNDLE". JUST WENT THROUGH MANY OF THE SAME COMPLAINTS AND I BELIEVE GM SHOULD STEP UP! *NM

THE SPEEDOMETER ON MY 03 CHEVROLET SILVERADO RANDOMLY STICKS. RIGHT NOW IT IS STUCK AT 80 MPH AND THE TRUCK IS STATIONARY AND IS NOT EVEN STARTED. THIS CAUSES MY SPEED TO DISPLAY WRONG AND I MUST USE SIMPLE ARITHMETIC TO FIGURE OUT HOW FAST I'M GOING. HOWEVER, AT THIS POINT, I CAN ONLY USE THAT ARITHMETIC TO DETERMINE UP TO 40 MPH AS MY SPEEDOMETER ONLY MEASURES UP TO 120. AFTER THAT, I DON'T KNOW HOW FAST I'M GOING. THIS IS THE FOURTH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED -- IT SEEMS TO EVENTUALLY FIX ITSELF ONLY TO HAPPEN AGAIN. IN CHECKING INTERNET CHAT ROOMS, THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON OCCURRENCE FOR CHEVY/GM VEHICLES IN THAT PRODUCTION YEAR. WHY HAS THIS BEEN ALLOWED TO CONTINUE WITHOUT A RECALL? MY CAR IS DUE FOR INSPECTION. I CAN ONLY HOPE THAT I GET THE SPEEDOMETER BACK TO 0 TO HAVE THIS INSPECTION DONE AS I DON'T HAVE TIME TO GET THE REPAIR DONE NOR DO I FEEL I SHOULD HAVE TO SPEND A DIME ON SOMETHING THAT IS OBVIOUSLY A MANUFACTURING PROBLEM. I JUST NOTICED THE SIDEWALLS OF FIRESTONE STEELTEX TIRES ( SIZE LT245/75R16 AT LOAD RANGE E) CRACKING IN A UNIFORM CIRCLE ABOUT 2 INCHES IN FROM THE EDGE OF THE TREAD. IT LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE CRACKING ALONG A SEAM IN THE SIDEWALL OF SOME SORT. I REVIEWED THE WARRANTY AND IT STATES THAT DRY ROT CRACKS ARE COVERED FOR 4 YEARS FROM THE DATE OF PURCHASE OR IF NO PROOF OF PURCHASE EXISTS, 4 YEARS FROM THE MANUFACTURED DATE THE TIRES CAME AS ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT ON A BRAND NEW 2003 SILVERADO 2500 PICK UP TRUCK THAT I PURCHASED ON APRIL 5, 2003. I AM ASSUMING THAT DATE QUALIFIES AS THE DATE OF MY PURCHASE OF THE TIRES. I HAD THE LOCAL FIRESTONE DEALER IN HAYSVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA LOOK AT THEM AND HIS POSITION IS THAT SINCE THE TIRES WERE MANUFACTURED BETWEEN 20000 AND 2002, THE WARRANTY NO LONGER APPLIES. THESE PEOPLE ARE SELLING TIRES THAT ARE UNSAFE AND PRONE TO SIDEWALL FAILURE AND THEN WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *NM
SPEEDOMETER IS NOT WORKING CORRECT IT WILL GO 75 TO 80 AND THEN STICK. SOMETIMES IT WILL GO OFF THE METER AND NOT GO DOWN . HAVE TO CYCLE THE KEY SWITCH TO MAKE IT RESET. LAST FOR SOMETIME THEN DOES IT ALL AGAIN. IT READS WRONG BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN CHECKED BY RADAR BY A FRIEND IN THE POLICE DEPT. THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY GM. THERE ARE JUST TO MANY PEOPLE HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I HAVE A 2003 SILVERADO MILEAGE 85,000 BEEN LIVING WITH THIS FOR 8 MONTHS. STILL NO RECALL. GM MUST HAVE A REAL PROBLEM THEY DON'T WANT TO FACE. *JB
TL *- THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE MAKING A RIGHT TURN HE HEARD A CRACKING NOISE IN HIS VEHICLE. WHILE CHECKING HIS VEHICLE HE NOTICED A LOT OF GREASE COMING OUT OF THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL. THE SAME DAY THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A MECHANIC (NOT A DEALERSHIP) AND THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS WITH HIS LOWER BALL JOINT. THAT OPINION, HE THEN CONTACTED THE MANUFACTURE AND THEY ADVISED HIM TO TAKE THE VEHICLE TO A CERTIFIED DEALER AND GET A DIAGNOSIS ON VEHICLE. WHEN HE TOOK IT TO HIS LOCAL DEALERSHIP ON 12-02-06 THEY STATED THAT THE RIGHT FRONT AXLE JOINT WAS DAMAGE. AS WELL AS THIS PROBLEM THE CONTACT EXPERIENCE A PROBLEM WITH THE SPEEDOMETER ON 11-26-06. THE SPEEDOMETER WAS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, THE SPEEDOMETER DOES NOT MOVE WHEN ACCELERATING. THE CONTACT HAS ALSO STATED THAT HE HAS A COPY OF THE DIAGNOSIS.

DEALER INDICATED "YELLOW" WIRE BROKEN ON SOME VEHICLES OTHERS HAVE TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE SENSOR. DANGER IS ON LOOSE OF POWER IN TRAFFIC, INSTEAD OF A MESSAGE TO CHECK THE ENGINE. *NM
2003 CHEVROLET SILVERADO SPEEDOMETER VERY ERRATIC WILL BE SITTING STILL AND WILL SHOW 60 70 OR 80 MPH AND WILL GO TO MAX WHEN DOING AROUND 30 OR 35 ... THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE NOT KNOWING YOUR SPEED. MY VEHICLE ONLY HAS 37,000 MILES TO DATE. *NM
VEHICLE WAS IDLING POORLY, IT HAD A ROUGH IDLE THAT WOULD SHAKE THE VEHICLE. THIS CAME AND WENT, IT WAS NOT A CONSTANT PROBLEM BUT SLOWLY GREW WORSE. IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT 4 OF THE EIGHT CYLINDERS, ONE ENTIRE BANK, WAS MISFIRING. THE TROUBLE WAS CAUSED BY A FAULTY OXYGEN SENSOR THAT WAS DUMPING 50% MORE FUEL THAN NEEDED INTO THESE CYLINDERS. THE SENSOR WAS REPLACED AS WAS THE SPARK PLUGS WHICH HAD BECOME FOULED. *NM

2003 CHEVROLET Z-71 EXT. CAB, 4.8 LITER, AUTO TRANS. LS MODEL. JUST TURNED 50,000 MILES ON 11-13-2006 AND SPEEDOMETER IS ERRATIC AND INACCURATE! UNACCEPTABLE AND UNSAFE. I HAVE READ OVER 200 OF THE SAME CASES WITH THE SAME TYPE OF VEHICLE. SPEEDOMETER READS 100 WHEN TRAVELING AT 60 MPH. WHEN IN PARK SPEEDOMETER READS OVER 35 MPH. THIS SAFETY ISSUE NEEDS TO BE RECALLED! *NM
I OWN A 2003 CHEVROLET 1500HD 4X4. IT HAS HEATED SEATS WHICH TEND TO COME ON BY ITS SELF AND WILL NOT TURN OFF. THE SEATS GET EXTREMELY HOT. SINCE THIS PROBLEM OCCURRED, I'M NOW GETTING A SERVICE 4 WHEEL DRIVE LIGHT, BUT THE 4X4 SEEMS OK. I THINK THE SHORT IN THE SEATS IS EFFECTING OTHER PARTS ON MY TRUCK. *JB
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THE UPPER BALL JOINT WAS REPLACED IN JUNE OF 2006 AND ON 11/9/2006 THE BALL JOINT FRACTURED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS TRAVELING 35 MPH. THE SERVICE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED.
DT*: THE CONTACT STATED THERE WAS A RATTLING NOISE IN THE VEHICLE. THE SERVICE DEALER PREVIOUSLY GREASED THE INTERMEDIATE STEERING SHAFT TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE. AFTER THE SERVICE, THE RATTLING SOUND RETURNED. AFTER THE SECOND INCIDENT, THE SERVICE DEALER STATED THE STEERING SHAFT WILL NEED TO BE GREASED EVERY 10000 MILES TO KEEP THE RATTLING SOUND AWAY. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERN OVER LONG TERM DAMAGE TO THE STEERING SHAFT DUE TO THIS PROBLEM.
