NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
I believe my 2014 silverado has a recall for the vacuum brake pump. I just purchased the truck a month ago And I noticed when I take off in drive or reverse and hit the brake pedal it doesn’t want to move and becomes stiff. It has almost caused me to have 2 accidents now. After doing research and looking things up I have come to know there as a recall on these trucks for the vacuum brake pump and I don’t think this truck has ever been fixed for it. I would like to get this fixed before it causes an accident.
started it this morning with remote start (not after market) to warm it up and when i went out there the cab was full of smoke and the back window was glowing red with flames emerging. I extinguished fire and turned it off and the back window shattered.
My vehicle's headlamps are so dull I can't see at night. I contacted GM and they offered to replace them if I would pay half the cost , which I was going to do , but I had a heart attack and surgery & was in intensive care for almost a month. When I became able to come home , after I missed my appointment due to this situation , I contacted GM and they said they were not going to help me because I didn't have it done in time. My vehicle is always parked in a garage and well kept. The headlamps are VERY dull and dangerous to drive at night. I would like Gm to replace them as I believe this is a manufacture's defect. I was a GM Dealer for several years and don't believe this is their usual practice , giving them the benefit of the doubt. These are dangerous as I can't see at night and oncoming traffic can't see me either clearly. Please help me. This is DANGEROUS!
Friday November 26th after having hit a deer, my truck quit entirely. Transmission Would Shudder, and Rattle, then not engage, causing engine to Die during several attempts. I had to have the truck towed 3 times just to get it to where I could have the issue diagnosed. Gateway Transmission quoted $4200 minimum on repairs including Torque Convertor, Drive Shaft (replace w Steel not orig. alum). The repairs are completed, which now totaled $ 6,374.84 paid out of pocket. I have been without a vehicle for 60 Days. The Transmission Coolant Lines also had to be replaced. No GM notification has been received. Multiple Complaints found re same issue. I AM DEAF Phone included is a voice contact family member.
Remoted started truck to defrost windows, driver side backglass made a loud bang sound and shattered.
In the last few weeks I have been losing power steering and yesterday when I was on the road from school with my children I completely lost control of the steering wheel that did not let me turn
I was buckling my seatbelt and the cable connecting the lap belt end to the seat base broke. The failure was at the top end of the cable where the cable is swedged into a bracket. From my inspection of the cable, it looked like a fatigue type failure of the cable at the point the flexure was stopped by the end connection.
The transmission is throwing codes for selanoids and I've gone online and seems there's millions out there with the same problem in these chevrolet vehicles.
Truck has rough breaking at low speeds. It’s due to the break pump recall on this make, year and model. The break pump also makes a clicking sound when engine is running. Common in these trucks.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 MPH, he experienced an intermittent power steering failure. The contact stated he was driving and suddenly lost the ability to turn the steering wheel. The contact stated that after waiting a short time he restarted the vehicle and the power steering functionality was restored. The contact stated that he contacted the dealer and scheduled a future appointment for a diagnostic check. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 12,120.
I purchased vehicle new 12/2013 and have had the vehicle to Chevy dealer after purchase due to hard downshifts and banging in transmission on shifting. Dealer claimed condition was a normal condition and would do nothing to remedy. This shifting condition stayed the same until the following event. 10/19/2021 driving northbound on I75 in Michigan at 75mph vehicle starts jerking and banging and starts losing speed. Tachometer is bouncing up and down between 1800-2300 rpm, transmission temp was 270 degrees. Vehicle is having transmission failure. I put transmission in manual mode and used 4th gear at 45 mph to limp into my destination. It was pitch dark, raining and very hard to see and I was concerned of being rear ended if I pulled off the side of the road and waited for a wrecker. The next day I drove the vehicle to a transmission shop, again using M4 to limp in as my brother in law followed behind with his emergency flashers on to alert others of a slow moving vehicle. The independent transmission shop inspected my vehicle and determined the torque converter failed and contaiminated the transmission, lines and cooler with metal shavings. They also commented they see several of these vehicles for the same problem, it's common issue they said. Mileage at failure was 124780. They rebuilt the transmission, replaced the torque converter and flushed the lines and cooler at a cost of 2755.00. GM should be held responsible to reimburse owners of these vehicles as they knew of these transmission issues and placed the occupants of vehicle at risk of injury or death if this issue caused a collision. I have attached documented complaint at GM when vehicle was new of clunking and banging in transmission and their answer was its a normal condition.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 20 MPH and turning to the left, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The contact stated she observed the "low power for steering" warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled safely off the road. The contact drove the vehicle to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed and no issues were found. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred. The contact researched and thought the failure was related to NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V414000 (Steering). The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
Trailer brake control. Trailer brake module. Trailer wiring. All having issues warning comes up to check trailer brake wiring when there is no trailer connected.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving at 10 MPH and making a turn, the vehicle inadvertently lost power steering and stopped on the side of the road by a curb. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated the failure had been reoccurring while driving, almost causing the vehicle to crash into another vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who did not diagnose the vehicle and advised the contact that his VIN was not included in the recall for NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V414000 (STEERING). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 82,100.
While driving on I-70 between Cincinnati OH and Louisville KY at night, I switched high beams and the instrument panel, headlights, flickered off and on as the truck momentarily lurched. I stopped at gas station and shut truck off and when I tried to restart there was a complete loss of power. Under the hood I wiggled the blue connector to this box located on top of the battery (I think it is some kind of fusible link with two harnesses and other wires coming off of it. I then tried the key FOD and remote started the truck. I was able to get home that night but every time I would use passing lights the lurching and momentary power loss would occur. When I used the turn signal to turn on my street I lost all power and almost hit another car due to loss of steering and brakes - I wiggled the blue connector again on that fusible link box and was able to secure the vehicle. As I look at google and GM truck links I am seeing a large population of complaints on this issue that include possible grounding issues where a rubber grommet is being employed between the grounding strap and body, grounding wire in contact with passenger side header, and a number of other electrical issues. GM seems to be aware of the issue since they have a number of service bulletins addressing the issues (they instruct technicians not to change parts unless the issue is replicated) and I am concerned at the large number of these GM's possibly affected and the spread of year models noted.
Brake vacuum pump is failing creating an unsafe condition while braking when the vehicle is in a low RPM range. I had a close call while backing down a sloping driveway at my home in which it was almost impossible to stop the vehicle. The pedal provided a lot of resistance but the vehicles braking power was greatly reduced. Ultimately I had to use all my strength on the pedal for the vehicle to stop. After continual issues, I am in the process of getting the vehicle repaired. Thank goodness this didn’t occur while backing a boat into the water. I have not been able to use a boat for fear of ending up in the lake.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact purchased the vehicle at the local dealer and while test driving the vehicle, she noticed the air bag warning light was illuminated. The contact took the vehicle back to local dealer, where it was diagnosed with needing an unknown component to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired but was pending repairs. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 112,000.
The steering locks up completely when driving. This could cause a major and even fatal crash. The steering locks up without any warning then the message appears to service power steering. My wife a d child we’re in the truck when this happened randomly. They are extremely lucky they were not hit by anyone.
The truck wouldn’t start, after jumping the battery and commencing our drive the truck would intermittently hit breaks with foot lightly on accelerator. Engine power is reduced showed on screen. Trailer break system warning. Upon doing research online, it it a failure due to the trailer wiring harness. (Example of error off of YouTube https://youtu.be/G2oJTytqIsk ) Dealership has told us they cannot fix it under warranty although it is a faulty part from the factory. Truck is completely undrivable/unsafe to operate and we are having to pay for rental car. 56000 miles and they are not honoring power train warranty.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while his wife was driving making a turn, the vehicle loss power steering functionality. The electronic control steering module message was displayed. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 MPH, the steering wheel seized while turning left and right. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where the contact was informed that the electronic control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 76,000.
I was driving and my truck just lost all power and my steering wheel locked up as I was turning. Lights turned off. This lasted for about 3 to 5 seconds. Then it turned back on. Then later in the day it happened in a drive through as I was leaving except it would not start back up. This should not be happening especially for a truck with only 53000 miles.
My vehicle started displaying a stabilitrak warning, gauge lights dimming, hard steering, and the ac turning off when I would push the brake pedal while driving. 15 miles later, while making a left hand turn, my vehicle shut off completely which caused a loss of power steering. I was able to avoid an accident as the vehicle did restart. Prior to this incident, I have taken the vehicle in twice to Chevrolet dealerships to diagnose this issue. Both times they stated they could not duplicate the issue so nothing was done. This seems to be a common issue for many 2014 Chevrolet Silverado owners.
Make a left turn and lose all power the truck just dies in may or may not start right back up
The vehicle has experienced dash and screen flickering while driving. When stopped and making turns the engine shuts off and the steering is locked. The whole dash goes blank. The engine is not able to restart or click. Anit-theft warning comes on for no reason. I feel there is a safety issue when driving this vehicle but no recalls have been placed. I don't feel safe driving my babies in the car.
I have a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 4x4 which the "O2 Sensors" are going out and causes my truck to run rich and lose horsepower. My truck does burn more fumes from the exhaust causing bad pollution in the air. Can type of action this be considered as a recall.
Electronic power steering suddenly fails as low speeds, low speed turning, and backing up. Often occurs after dash lights flicker and stabilitrak warning comes up on dash monitor. Causes dangerous situations in parking lots trying to navigate around other cars. This is the second occurrence since purchasing the vehicle. I had it fixed once through a software fix. The problem has returned a year and a half later.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle came with a spare tire that was not the appropriate size for the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. Upon investigation, the contact associated the failure with NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V578000 (Tires) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 51,000.
My vehicle lost the ability to apply brakes or slow down, the vehicle had a rock hard peddle at low speed. There was no illuminated light on the dashboard no warning! I barely avoided a collision and scraped my truck driving off the road to try and stop it. The issue is worst at lower RPM!
Multiple GM vehicles have an error with the traction control system that they cannot diagnose and continuously dismiss to cover their mistakes. Many makes and models report warnings to Service Stabilitrak and Service Breaks along with numerous other warnings. After the warning, drivers are experiencing power failure, locking steering wheels, wrecks, exponential costs for investigations, and temporary fixes. GM will not release any information on investigations into this matter. GM Technicians can not adequately diagnose the issue and will say there is a grounding problem, Traction Control module needs to be reset, replace the battery, and many other bogus repairs to temporarily fix the problem. How many people will have to experience these mechanical errors that can cause serious wrecks or fatalities before NHTSA or GM will investigate? All GM owners should be absolutely disappointed and disgusted with the response from the safety measures put in place to "protect us."
Service Sabilitrack warning will appear and not that the vehicle will have limited steering capabilities. Then while driving 75 miles an hour on the highway merging lanes the steering wheel locked completely and unable to move it at all. Not an issue with power steering but an actual locking of the wheel. Happened multiple other times in parking lots. Was addressed and fixed by Chevrolet dealership, but now issue is back after the truck failed a state inspection and the tech reset the computer.
Vehicle losses electric power steering specially at low speeds tends to jump to the right side or locks the steering wheel possibly accident if it continues. There are recalls on most trucks like mine but it seems that my truck is not in the list and it should be this is a real safety issue I believe that I report it to you before.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was restarted however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that there was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to a local dealer nor independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 48,500.
My 2014 Chevy Silverado crew cab 1500 has started to vibrate. It’s like it comes and goes sometime. I was driving down the highway and something didn’t feel right so I thought it was the road surface that was making my truck feel that way. I then was driving on a newly resurfaced road an it was feeling the same like I had a flat tire. The tires were ok. It had this vibration.
The code service 4wd come up and it locks the 4wd up can’t be driving took to shop put on computer and 200 miles later did it again
My 2014 Silverado had a hose leak in 2018. Three years later I have the exact same issue. It’s a refrigerant leak. It has not been inspected this time around because it’s clear that this will be an ongoing expensive problem that I cannot afford. It’s in the 100’s out here and even hotter in a vehicle. My family and are getting sick from heat exhaustion I need immediate relief, please.
Towing 16ft stock trailer with 2 calves- Turning Left onto another 2 lane road which was downhill, Engine shut off during turn, power steering went out, had truck brakes pressed to floor, trailer brakes didn't react. Took everything I had to turn the steering wheel to keep from going off embankment on both sides of road. Finally got stopped when road flattened out. Thank goodness no oncoming vehicle!!! Message on dash to roll up drivers side window. Truck restarted! Truck only has 60100 miles. What is going on with this truck? I could have injured myself or someone else? Thank you in advance for allowing me to voice what happened today 6/28/21
PAINT PEELING OFF CAB.
Brake padel still rock hard at low speeds even after the so called fix for this issue that GM did for the previous recall
Brakes seem to sputter/skip when applying when traveling above 40 mph. I had an inspection done with Brake Masters. They inspected brake pads, rotors and performed a road test. They stated Brakes pads and rotors were still good about another year left. They did say brakes sputtered at about 40 mph and over. They thought it could be issue with brake vacuum system Thanks
Started leaking gas from the back side of the motor.
Transmission Light comes on to say cut engine off, if not done quickly, just dies. It can cut off at any time. I just purchased truck and took it to the chevrolet dealer they told me this year make and model has had a lot of transmission issues that the torque converter fails inside the transmission and they want 6000.00 to fix it, I have not had the truck 60 days
At low speed the power brakes no longer work. The brake pedal has to be pushed to the floor in order to stop. The pedal does not return to its original position and remains soft/spongy and pushed in. Almost caused an accident when this was first discovered.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated while entering their vehicle after a rainstorm, they noticed water leaking into the interior of the rear section of the vehicle. A puddle of water was on the floor. The contact stated the water seems to be seeping into the interior from the third rear brake light sealing from the outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacture was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the driver’s side front seat belt tensioner cable failed to operate as designed and detached. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the NHTSA campaign number: 16V209000 (Seat Belts). The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure listed in the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 72,000.
problem first started about 6 weeks ago. slowing down making a turn my truck would shut down without any warning. once turning left in a four lane highway. once turning into Mc Donalds jumping curb and several other times. took into dealership for a recall told them about problem. they put analizer on it showing nothing. it has shut down several times since and a light on my truck finanally came on saying it was the trucks thief deterrent system. i will be taking this into my dealership again this morning but feel you should be aware of this problem as all control of truck was loss when turning into oncoming traffic.
My 2014 chevy silverado when backing down boat ramp break pedal will go all the way to the floor. I almost lost my whole truck an boat. This just started . I have little over 33 thousand miles on truck.
When stopping at slow speeds in stop and go traffic my abs would kick on and the power breaks would not work and I would need to press the break pedal very hard to stop. Only seems to happen in stop and go traffic at slow speeds but it's super scarey.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the brakes failed to engage properly when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact stated there was no warning light illuminated. The contact related the failure to an unknown recall. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer and repaired under the unknown recall however, the failure occurred 4 months later. The vehicle was then taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed with the brake assist pump needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 165,000.
