NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
There is an open recall but my truck is not listed. I was driving around today and my front brakes are not fully releasing. Brakes are hot and do not feel comfortable driving with this issue.Call my local dealership and GM customer service and both say I am out of luck. The recall is a faulty vacuum pump and or an update of the electronic brake control module software. This also happened a few weeks ago in occasion but today was all day. Thanks.
My truck only has 72,000 miles on it, yet the lifters in the engine are failing/ malfunctioning. While in drive, it has a hard time shifting into higher gears causing the engine to continue revving but not picking up more speed. A quick google search shows this to be a common issue. GM was made aware of the problem but did not offer much help in resolving the matter. GM specifically stated the NHTSA needs to say it is a safety issue before they will do anything about it.
The vehicle has experienced persistent engine performance issues that have not been resolved through standard repairs. Initial diagnostics indicated knock sensor faults, which were replaced at significant cost. However, the issue persisted and additional codes related to air fuel imbalance (P219B) appeared. The vehicle continues to exhibit reduced power, hesitation, and inconsistent acceleration while driving. This creates a safety concern, particularly when merging into traffic or attempting to accelerate in situations requiring reliable engine response. The dealership has quoted a minimum repair cost exceeding $7,000, with the possibility of increasing to $10,000 depending on further findings once the engine is opened. Due to the high cost and uncertainty of repair, the vehicle may remain in operation with an unresolved defect. Research indicates that similar issues have been reported by other owners of this vehicle generation, suggesting a potential broader defect that may impact vehicle safety. This issue affects the vehicle’s ability to deliver consistent power and safe acceleration. Given the relatively low mileage and the severity of the repair required, this may represent a defect that warrants further investigation. The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While the contact was operating the vehicle, the vehicle came to a stop at a stop sign. While attempting to accelerate, the vehicle stalled and failed to move. The contact stated that the transmission failed to operate properly, and the vehicle was unable to shift into gear. The contact stated that the vehicle shut off with the check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was unable to be restarted or moved from the roadway. An independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle at the residence and determined that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.
I was driving in the rain 3 nights ago when my Chevy Silverado unexpectedly started shaking very bad , jerking while trying to brake, surging forward and total loss of acceleration. My dash lights were blinking and I was scared ,I had no idea what was going on. Since our family are loyal Jba customers( we own 2 silverados) and payed for the extended warranty and certified warranty I drove straight there and explained what happened. I was scared and crying, just diagnosed with Vulva Cancer stage lllC. Well the truck has been in the shop at jba diagnosed with bad Cam shift rod and lifts. They want $10,300.00 for repair. Even though we've been with them so long and had every maintenance done through them they weren't helpful in helping. Can someone help me? I need to be able to get to John's Hopkins for my cancer treatments. I've looked up this issue and it looks VERY common. Please, help me. Jba had me sign a document so the dates can be verified.
Odometer Fraud. The contact purchased a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 on January 16, 2026. The contact stated that while an independent mechanic was attempting to repair the engine, it was discovered that there was a mileage discrepancy with the vehicle. The vehicle was a private sale. The contact called the private dealer and requested the money back that was paid to purchase the vehicle, and the dealer declined the request. The contact called the State Attorney General's Office and was referred to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. At the time of the purchase, the mileage was approximately 182,000; it was later discovered that the correct mileage was 192,393.
One of the factory solder joints on the air conditioning condenser failed causing the refrigerant to leak out of the air conditioning system rendering the air conditioning notn functional. This is a safety issue because without functioning air conditioning the windshield defogger is ineffective and visibility is drastically reduced. This is a known issue with 2017 through 2018 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks. The problem has not been diagnosed by a dealer as I confirmed the diagnosis myself. There were no warning lights when the failure occurred. The only indication of the failure was the loss of effectiveness of the windshield defogger. This failure first occurred on 3/6/26 with 58,485 miles on the vehicle. I am the only one who has inspected the vehicle and it is available for third party inspection upon request.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and running, the transmission remained in neutral(N). There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that while attempting to move the gear shifter, the transmission remained in neutral(N). The vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure recurred. The contact was able to drive the vehicle after several attempts. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed and determined that the transmission had failed and needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,200.
Rear power sliding window shattered after remote vehicle ignition was started in cold weather last month. It blew outward. There was a recall for this issue, but my Vin # was not included despite it being a 2017 Chevy Silverado. the recall number is: N192265660 Why was my Vin # not included? I am working to now get repaired by Chevy dealership. But questioning its exclusion from recall.
Driving down the road, and suddenly driver side of rear windshield exploded. GM has publicly acknowledged faulty circuit/glass in prior (expired) campaign in US (N192265660) and apparently there is a full recall in Canada for this problem, 2014-2018 Silverado 1500 with power sliding rear windshield. Chevrolet/GM told me they would not offer any assistance in repair. Repair cost is $948 at local glass shop. Will upload receipt after repair. Of course, this could have caused a major incident on the highway, from losing control of vehicle, heart attack, ,glass could go flying...However, my dog and I maintained our cool and there were no injuries. No one has inspected this. The glass will be replaced in two days. Dealership wasn't interested in helping. There were no warning lamps at all. I bought vehicle in 2021, after N192265660 "expired", and thusly had no knowledge of nor opportunity to fix the issue, as GM never notified me of it.
While driving the vehicle the passenger side of my rear window shattered due to the rear defroster circuit overheating. I brought the vehicle into my local Chevrolet Cerified dealership to examine - they stated that my vin number is not included in the wide spread recall affecting over 150k vehicles having the same exact issue. I did call GM and she told me how the recall could only be specific to vehicles manufactured at certain locations, or many other factors could lead to my truck not being covered. My vehicle has the power sliding center window - I have researched and have seen a ton of vehicles with this same rear window have the exact same issue as I did. Even the same side breaks. I don't understand how mine is not covered under the recall so many others are. This currently has not been fixed - I am concerned that the same issue will occur even after getting it fixed. I feel it should be not only covered under the recall, but the faulty part causing the issue should be replaced just as it has been with all the covered vehicles. I am asking for this to be reviewed further and expanding the vehicles covered under this recall. It is a very unsafe problem that can cause fire and injury. I don't know how bad this could have been if someone were sitting in the back seat when this happened.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact heard a loud pop and looked in the rearview mirror and became aware that the rear glass had shattered. The contact stated that the temperature was below freezing and that the rear windshield defroster was activated during the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000.
approximately, on or about [XXX], while driving our Chev Silverado, VIN as noted [XXX] ) started to experience transmission issues when i started from a stop sign and it started hesitating upon acceleration, jerking (gears not meshing correctly every time i had to stop). This included delayed engagement of gears, roughing shifting, slight slipping of gears, at times i could smell a burning like smell, (No leaks noticed on transmission anywhere and no warning lights coming on to warn about Transmission problems). On Jan 23rd, 2026, i took it to B&F automotive had mechanic check fluid level and do drive test with me. Fluid found to be good. I could hear a slight sound like high pitch sound at times, only last few seconds randomly). Mechanic suggested i put some fuel system cleaner in and 90 Octane to hopefully clear the system. dealer also suggested this just as a suggestion though they found no apparent issues during prior service oil change I just had dealer do a 27-point inspection with oil change and they did not notice issues. Since purchase of truck in 2019, from dealer, all services have been done only by dealer (Woodland Motors). we had bought extending service warranty with vehicle. According to dealer, it just expired Dec 2025. I currently have appointment to have dealer inspect it on Monday Jan 25th, 2026, at 1pm concerning our complaint of drive train issues. Current mileage is approx. 63, 060 miles. on advise of mechanic, i called dealer right away and set the above appoint. I explained to dealer rep that this will cause me financial hardship as i am [XXX]. i do maintain a maintenance file with all service records since purchase. The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked with the defroster activated, there was smoke coming from the rear window, followed by a loud noise. The contact stated that upon turning around, the contact noticed that the driver's side rear window had shattered. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
1. The vehicle's transmission does not operate consistently and safely. 2. At times, the transmission will not engage, and this has placed my family in very dangerous situations when changing lanes. 3. At red lights, at times, the transmission will not engage to drive. 4. When slowing in traffic at times , the transmission will not adjust to the slower speed, although the operator is applying the brakes. Then, without warning, the transmission will engage the higher speed, almost launching the vehicle forward suddenly, potentially into another vehicle or person, depending on the situation.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal metal-on-metal sound coming from the engine. No warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended while depressing the accelerator pedal, and the engine sounded rough. The vehicle was taken to two different independent mechanics, who diagnosed that the Active Fuel Management (AFM) and Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) were impacting the lifters, which impacted the camshaft, and scraped the cylinder walls, causing the engine to fail. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, who confirmed the engine failure. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The vehicle was towed to the residence and no longer driven. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.
While driving on Highway 35 in Austin, Texas, my vehicle's transmission unexpectedly failed, which placed myself and my passengers in a precarious situation. The vehicle became inoperable on the side of the highway, necessitating that my passengers and I manually push it while traffic was actively flowing. This mechanical issue occurred without any prior indication. Through my subsequent research, I have observed that this particular problem appears to be a recurring concern with this model of vehicle.
Our 2017 High Country 1500 Chevy Silverado is garage-kept and has very low mileage (73k). But it has the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, which just caused lifter failure, thus causing catastrophic engine damage. In research, we discovered newer models with the AFM have been recalled for this exact problem. Unfortunately, our model truck with the AFM has not been recalled, despite the fact that the problem and damage are the same.
The brakes stop functioning at slow speeds such as parking and backing , this has been an ongoing issue for many years, mostly once in a while, but lately almost every single time I drive it , I believe it’s an ECBM Issue
I bought the vehicle with 14000 miles.had oil changed at dealership ever ,5000 miles.I drive 10 miles a day.at 55000 miles the lifters are ticking like a time bomb.It makes me sick that a vehicle with no more miles than this is in this shape.Gm should stand behind there junk motors with this afm.
At 54,900K miles my truck started to experience a tapping sound from the engine. I took it to a shop and was told that the Auto Fuel Management system can cause problems with the lifters. I tried to use my 200,000/10 year Warranty, but the warranty company refused because I went over 6 months on my oil change. The cost of repairs was over $6,900 and the push rods were bent, one lifter was broke off, the cam was damaged from the lifters and a piece on the timing chain was broke. Chevy knows there's a problem with the 5.3L Engine and refuses to fix it. No warning light ever came on. This problem first appeared in December of 2025 around 54,900 miles. I have since had the vehicle repaired and I kept all the parts. Chevy should recall this engine instead of letting their customers pay the repair costs for a flawed design caused by their AFM System. I was told to stop driving my vehicle because if I continued to drive it with the tapping sound it could cause the engine to blow up. I also have an After Market Warranty which would not cover the repair because Chevy issued a Technical Service Bulletin about the problem, Bulletin No.: 19-NA-219.
Nothing yet. Between doing research and general observation the DOD/AFM is a known issue for these motors. The engine will randomly loose a valve and cause the engine to shut down causing for a major Saftey concern if traveling or towing
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 10 MPH through a drive-thru, the brake pedal was depressed but was firm. The contact pumped the brake pedal, and the vehicle slowly responded and nearly rear-ended another vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a fee would be charged for a diagnostic test. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V645000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the recall repair was previously performed in November 2019. The contact stated that the recall repair had failed to correct the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.
Trailer brake warning
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH with the defroster activated, the contact observed a burning odor, and the rear window shattered. The contact steered to the side of the road and inspected the vehicle. The contact stated that while standing outside of the vehicle, a burned mark was seen on the bottom left side of the outer glass. The contact stated that on the opposite side of the burn mark, there was another mark on the inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 138,000.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the accelerator pedal was depressed, and the vehicle hesitated before jolting into the next gear. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle occasionally lost automotive power while depressing the accelerator pedal. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who was able to retrieve DTC: P0452; and recommended that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the same mechanic and was advised that the fuel pump had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 180,000.
Bought the truck brand new, after 20,000 miles started vibrating. Took it to the dealership said it was the transmission shutters. They changed the fluid. At 50,000 miles did it again, they said GM came out with a thicker fluid, but it in there. Was fine for a while. At around 135,000 miles getting the vibration again. Also, at 140,000 miles cylinder 8 misfiring. Took it in and they tore it apart and said cylinder 4 and 8 lifter failure. Damage to cam and bent rods. Had to replace all lifters, cam and rods. Cost over $10,500, but had BG warranty used that additive every oil change so BG covered $4,000. I went by the oil life indicator on the truck to determine when I needed to change it, but apparently for engine for life you have to change it more frequently at 6,000 miles, so they wouldn’t cover that part.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 25-35 MPH from a complete stop at a traffic light, the RPMs increased to 4,000 before the transmission shifted into gear. The contact was able to drive the vehicle. The contact immediately pulled into a relative's driveway and parked the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a certified mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the torque converter had failed. The torque converter was scheduled to be replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and informed the contact that recalls were issued by the NHTSA. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000. The VIN was not available.
The rear window of my 2017 Chevy Silverado exploded. I had the rear defrosters on, and they malfunctioned. I thought I smelled something hot before this happened. I am surprised this didn't cause a fire. I have researched this issue, and it appears to be an ongoing problem with the 2014 - 2019 Silverado and Sierra trucks. In fact, Canada has a recall on this issue, but the U.S. does not. Why is that?
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 30-35 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but was firm. The contact shifted into neutral. The brakes became inoperable. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact of NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V645000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The mechanic determined that the failure was related to the vacuum pump. The vehicle was repaired. The local dealer was contacted, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 91,995.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while attempting to latch the front driver’s side seat belt securely, the pretensioner fractured off the seat. The vehicle was taken back to the local dealer; however, the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. In addition, the contact and another independent mechanic performed the repairs out of pocket. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,500.
Low speed loss of brakes
Loud tapping sound appears to be coming from Lifters and/or camshaft lobes from cylinder 2. Preliminary diagnosis was done by independent service center. Estimated cost to repair could be as much as $10,000. Vehicle odometer reads 72,108 miles. Vehicle started this problem early November 2025.
After starting the vehicle. I heard a hissing noise coming from the rear of the cabin. I looked in the rear view mirror and saw a large amount smoke rising from the box where the rear defroster power connects to the window. I immediately shut the vehicle off, got out and walked around the passenger side of the vehicle. As I approached the passenger rear door, the rear passenger window exploded with a Loud pop, shooting glass across the bed of the truck. I know there is currently a recall for this issue in Canada.
When driving all gauges go to zero, truck doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, warning lights come on (service 4WD, service stabilitrak, service traction control, reduced power steering, service traction control, service trailer brake system ). When NOT driving if these issues show on the dash when parked and the car doesn’t illuminate which gear it’s in, it does not crank over, does not start, there is no clicking noise either like if it was a bad starter. All the dash lights, gauges, radio goes black as if I turn the vehicle off instead of on. This has been happening since around 2020-2021 in Colorado. It was in a shop for over a month with no resolution. In Idaho in 2022-2024 in a shop for a month with no resolution, and now CA in 2025. No mechanic shop can figure out what is wrong, no “certified GM” shop or “certified GM engineer/technician can tell me what’s wrong. I have had the following replaced already and still having issues. Body Control Module (BCM), the Transfer Case control Module (TCCM), and the Brake Control Module (BCM).
Upon reversing the vehicle and apply the brake, as if in a parking lot or driveway, if pushing the brake pedal more than twice the pedal becomes hard and the vehicle becomes hard to stop without and excessive amount of force being applied to the brake pedal. If depressing the brake pedal more than 3 times, it is almost impossible to stop the vehicle with it coasting several feet. Checked for a recall, there is no recall, but there is a service bulletin that pertains to this issue concerning the brake assist vacuum pump booster, N182202780-01 and N192268490, for the 2014-2018 Chevy Silverado. An update to the electronic brake control module was completed on 2019-09-23, but such calibration seems to not be enough to resolve the issue.
The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado. The contact stated that while driving 10-15 MPH, the driver and passenger side air bags deployed independently. A dealer and an independent mechanic were contacted. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The contact sustained injuries to the head and neck. No medical attention was required. No police report was filed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, and they informed him that he would have to wait two to three weeks before getting the diagnosis. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.
Transmission went out while driving the vehicle and left it stuck in the middle of the intersection we had to push it though traffic. It had no forward movement. Would only drive in reverse. No warning or anything just made a clunk and wouldn't move any further.
I hit a deer going 60mph and the side airbags in the pillars attempted to deploy but did not appear to fully inflate, not only that but my steering wheel airbag did not deploy at all/no other airbags deployed.
See attached document for complaint.
Issue is based off of this service bulletin, but GM has failed to call a recall on this for coverage. I was driving my daughter to softball practice. Every few minutes there would be a "stabilitrak" message showing on the driving information area. Then in slower speeds my dashboard screen would blank out and then go back to CarPlay. Then once I approached a parking lot at slower speeds my vehicle lost total power and shut down. Then had to switching the gear to park, then turn off the ignition key, then wait a few seconds and turn the key on to start the truck. It started as normal and was able to park in the parking space. Very scary and this is a very serious issue, I could have been in an accident with my daughter. This has to be addressed, I can't be the only one having this issue.
The lifter collapsed causing it to scar the cam shaft due to afm/dod
The transmission started to shutter at 94,000 miles. Gwatney Chevrolet quoted $7,500 for a new transmission replacement. Had an in independent shop quote $4,670 for a reman transmission. I have only towed 2,000 lbs at a time in the past. This is the 1st time towing a 6,000lbs camper. It was only driven 800 miles with the camper in tow. The vehicle only has less than 95,000 miles and my transmission is shuttering and has metal shavings in the fluid. Needing a replacement at this time frame and mileage is ridiculous.
Transmission failure, I had to have the transmission replaced and no longer have it for inspection. I was on a one lane highway in Franconia NH with guardrails on each side, and no phone reception. Traffic was trying to get by me including tractor trailers, we were horrified and couldn't get out. these 6L80 transmission in the Chevy Silverado, come to find out, have been failing for a long time. 2 of my friends lost there's also, all of us were between 100k-115K miles. The transmission shop I went to, and others I called said they can't believe there was never a recall, they get many of them. Zero warning, just quit. I take exception care of my vehicles regarding maintenance, always early, these are to expensive to repair when your on a retired budget.
Hard jerking while driving clunks while driving shifts rough really bad when driving changes gears its an automatic stalls at lights runs rough jumps forward has no power at times brakes fail when stopping lunges when breaking Dealership and manufacture know about this Its been to dealership over 9 times same problem
I am having the exact transmission issue for this truck that has been recalled, but when I call to get it serviced, I am told "there isn't any unrepaired recalls. This issue is persistent and unresolved. Please look into this and potentially recall the transmission issue. This truck has constant shifting troubles form 1st to 2nd with shuddering.
I was driving to work last Monday when my truck entered a lymph mode. It would only let me go 40mph, when I was on a road that allowed others to go 60-70mph. I had traffic behind me as well. As I made it closer to work, the truck would only rev up. It left me sitting in a median with traffic going past me. Thankfully, I was not hit. I had to cut the truck off, wait several minutes, then start it back up to limp it to a safe spot where I could have it towed. I had it towed to a transmission shop. Please note* I have done the regular transmission maintenance on this vehicle as well. This shop done a diagnostic test on it ($95 +tax). It was a complete transmission failure. They told me this was due to the torque converter. General Motors, GM, programmed the transmission torque converter to kick on in 2nd gear which causes it to overheat practically everytime it drives. The same transmission shop said they rebuild 3-4 of the 6L80 transmissions a week. I have a 2017 chevy silverado with a 6 speed transmission, the 6L80..... This is an issue that GM should be held liable for. The transmission rebuild will be $4500-4800 + tax. Thank you to whomever reads this. I could really use help. My email is [XXX] . Phone number is [XXX] . I can provide rebuild cost and receipts when needed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
I have lost my brakes when reversing, however I have good brakes when driving forward. The transmission is also slipping and the torque converter in the transmission is becoming very worn ALREADY. I do not tow anything with this vehicle, and I only have 73,411 miles on this truck.
Electronic brakes lock up during driving. No power going to rear wheels.
High pressure fuel pump going bad and causes loss of power which is making my brake booster not getting enough vacuum causing me to loose braking. Common issue in these trucks and gm knows it
