2002 DODGE DURANGO DRIVER SIDE SEAT CAME OFF THE TRACK. CUSTOMER STATES THAT THE DEALER SAID THAT THE REPAIR WOULD NOT BE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY. CONSUMER STATED THAT THE SEAT BROKE AWAY FROM THE TRACK AND WAS NOT HIT BY ANOTHER VEHICLE. *KB
ON ROUTINE MAINTENANCE OF THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL (IE. FLUID) FOUND CLIP HAD BROKEN AND ATTACHED TO MAGNET IN HOUSING. CALLED LOCAL DEALER TO INQUIRE AS TO A RECALL, WAS TOLD THIS WAS A RECURRING PROBLEM WITH THIS VEHICLE, BUT NO RECALL AND MANUFACTURER WOULD NOT PAY TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. *TR
VEHICLE HAS JUST OVER 74,000 MILES AND A VERY SLIGHT SHUDDER AND VIBRATION FROM FRONT WHEELS EVOLVED INTO HARD VIBRATION AT SPEEDS OVER 35 MPH. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A REPAIR FACILITY WHERE I WAS TOLD THAT BOTH FRONT HUBS AND BEARINGS HAD TO BE REPLACED BECAUSE OF WEAR, AND THE TIE ROD ENDS ON BOTH SIDES WERE WORN BEYOND REPAIR AND HAD TO BE REPLACED. THE COST OF REPAIR TO MY VEHICLE IS APPROXIMATELY $1024.00. *TR
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE VEERED TO THE RIGHT AND CRASHED INTO THE GUARD RAIL. THE CONTACT SUSTAINED LEG AND ARM INJURIES. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE UPPER BALL JOINTS AND TIE RODS FAILED AND CAUSED THE CRASH. THE DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE UNABLE TO EXPLAIN WHY THIS OCCURRED AND STATED THAT NO RECALLS WERE AVAILABLE. IN 2005, THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED UNDER RECALL NUMBER 04V596000 (SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT), IN WHICH THE TIE RODS AND BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED. THE VEHICLE HAD 46,000 MILES AT THAT TIME. THE FAILURE AND CURRENT MILEAGES WERE 69,000.
I HEARD A CLUNKING NOISE FROM FRONT OF VEHICLE WHEN BRAKING OR TURNING. WHEN I TOOK IT FOR SERVICE, I WAS TOLD THE RIGHT FRONT STEERING CONTROL ARM WAS BROKEN AND CATASTROPHIC CONSEQUENCES WERE IMMINENT IF I DROVE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY THE DODGE DEALER. I WAS LATER ADVISED THAT NHTSA CAMPAIGN 04V596000 WAS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FAILURE. *TR
I BOUGHT 4 NEW PIRELLI P400 TOURING TIRES AT A DISCOUNT TIRE STORE IN VENTURA COUNTY CALIF ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS AGO. ABOUT 1 YEAR AGO ONE OF THE TIRES HAD A TREAD SEPARATION. I JUST GOT BACK FROM THE TIRE DEALER AND ONE MORE OF THE 4 TIRES HAS A TREAD SEPARATION. I HAVE BEEN DRIVING 35 YEARS AND HAVE NEVER HAD A SINGLE ONE BEFORE. IS THIS BAD LUCK OR ARE THESE BAD TIRES. *AK

ATTEMPTING SEVERAL TIME , COMPLAINING ABOUT THE WIRES GETTING TOO HOT . I HAVE REPLACED IT MY SELF ONCE , THIS LAST TIME IT TOO WAS GETTING HOT AND YOU CAN SMELL THE WIRES MELTING . THIS COULD BE A FIRE HAZARD . THIS IS HAPPENING IN MANY OF THE DURANGOS , DIFFERENT YEARS.
TRANSMISSION WILL NOT STAY ENGAGED IN PARK. PARKING WILL NOT ENGAGE AND THE ONLY WAY TO KEEP VEHICLE FROM ROLLING IS TO APPLY THE PARKING BRAKE. *TR

WHEN SHE MAKES A TURN, THE STEERING WHEEL FAILS TO RETURN AUTOMATICALLY AND SHE MUST PULL HARD TO GET IT BACK IN POSITION. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE IS A RECALL ON HER VEHICLE, HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT HER VEHICLE WAS EXCLUDED. THE ENGINE SIZE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT AND FAILURE MILEAGES WERE 117,000.
FRONT LEFT BRAKE CALIPER LOCKED DURING RUSH HOUR LEAVING WASHINGTON, DC ON A FRIDAY EVENING. THE DURANGO HAD 79,000 MILES ON IT. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED FROM A DEALER'S LOT IN AUGUST 2006. ALL MAINTENANCE HAS BEEN KEPT UP ON THE VEHICLE. WE HAD TO REPLACE BOTH CALIPERS IN THE FRONT. ALSO, REPLACE BOTH BRAKE PADS AND SHOES. THE BRAKE SHOES WERE BRAND NEW. THEY WERE PLACED ON THE DURANGO A MONTH PRIOR.*AK

I OWN A 2002 DODGE INTREPID, FIRST OFF I HAVE ALWAYS KEPT UP ON MAINTENANCE. I FINANCED THE CAR ABOUT 2 YEARS AGO. ALL OF A SUDDEN ABOUT 3 MONTHS AGO I NOTICED THE OIL LIGHT ON, ME THINKING I MAY BE LOW ON OIL I SIMPLY TOOK IT TO GET SERVICED JUST BECAUSE OF THE OIL LIGHT. THAT DIDN'T HELP THE CAR OIL LIGHT REMAINED. ABOUT A WEEK AFTER THAT I HEARD A STRANGE KNOCKING NOISE AND THEN BOOM IN THE MIDDLE OF A INTERSECTION AS I WAS ABOUT TO TURN LEFT IT DIED ! TOOK IT TO A DODGE DEALER IN MY AREA TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT I ENDED UP PAYING OVER $1500 AND HAD THE CAR STALL ON ME VARIOUS TIMES AFTER IT WAS SUPPOSEDLY FIXED! FINALLY TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC FOR A THIRD OPINION, BY THEN THE CAR WAS NOT RUNNING. I WAS TOLD THE ENGINE WAS BAD. THE DODGE DEALERSHIP SHOULD HAVE BEEN HONEST AND TOLD ME THE CAR WAS NOT OPERABLE. TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING 55-60 MPH, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ILLUMINATED THEN THE VEHICLE SHOOK THEN SHUT OFF. IN ADDITION, SHE NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ENGINE. THE MECHANIC STATED THAT THE POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH CAUSED THE FAILURE AND THEY REPLACED THE SWITCH. APPROXIMATELY FIVE MONTHS LATER THE FAILURE OCCURRED AGAIN. THE MECHANIC WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WA 68,000 AND CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 89,800. UPDATED 03/10/08. *LJ
TL*THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE OIL PUMP FAILED WITHOUT WARNING. THE OIL PRESSURE DROPPED AND THE MOTOR LOCKED. THE DEALER REBUILT THE TRANSMISSION, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER NUMEROUS TIMES, BUT THEY COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE WAS OIL LEAKAGE IN COLD WEATHER. WHEN THE ENGINE HEATED UP, THERE WAS SLUDGE BECAUSE THE LEAKER STOPPED THE STRAINER. THE PURCHASE DATE WAS UNKNOWN. THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 112,300 AND FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 91,053.
AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. *NM
CENTRAL TIMER MODULE FAILED UNEXPECTEDLY AT NIGHT, CAUSING HEADLIGHTS, TAILLIGHTS, SECURITY INDICATOR AND HORN TO ACTIVATE INTERMITTENTLY WHILE DRIVING. VEHICLE UNSAFE TO OPERATE IN THIS CONDITION. OUT OF WARRANTY, DEALER CHARGES $421.00 TO FIX. THIS FOLLOWS SEVERAL IN-WARRANTY ELECTRICAL REPAIRS - REMOTE LOCKING MECHANISM, REAR AXLE SPEED SENSOR AND POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE. DEFECT COULD EASILY CAUSE A WRECK AND POSES A SAFETY HAZARD. *JB
DODGE DURANGO JUST STOPS RUNNING AT RANDOM TIMES. THIS OCCURS AT SPEEDS OF 10-60 MPH OR EVEN WHEN THE CAR IS BEING STARTED. THE ODOMETER BLINKS AND READS NO BUS. THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS OF THIS ON DODGE INTERNET FORUMS. THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE AND/OR CRANKSHAFT SENSORS END UP BEING REPLACED, BUT THE PROBLEM IS HARD TO DIAGNOSE AND DANGEROUS BECAUSE IT OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING AND WHILE DRIVING. WITH SO MANY REPORTS ON 1999-2002 DODGE DURANGOS HAVING THIS PROBLEM (SEARCH DURANGO PCM "NO BUS") SOMETHING MUST BE DEFECTIVE. MY DURANGO BEGAN DOING THIS ABOUT A MONTH AGO AND THE DEALER DOESN'T SEE ANYTHING WRONG. I WAS MILDLY INJURED DURING ONE OF THE FAILURES, WHEN MY DURANGO 'SHUT OFF' WHILE I WAS COMING DOWN A HIGHWAY RAMP AND I BUMPED MY HEAD AGAINST THE DRIVER SIDE WINDOW WHILE TRYING TO STABILIZE THE CAR, WHICH SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING HAD NO POWERTRAIN CONTROL. *JB
REAR LEAF SPRING (DRIVER'S SIDE) BROKE OFF FROM THE SHACKLE CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO WANDER TO THE RIGHT! *JB
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM FAILURES HAVE RESULTED IN TURN SIGNALS NOT WORKING ON FOUR DIFFERENT OCCASIONS OVER THE COURSE OF 5 YEARS. THE WIRING HARNESS UNDER DASH HAS BEEN REPAIRED UNDER WARRANTY, REPLACED NOT UNDER WARRANTY, AND REPAIRED AGAIN NOT UNDER WARRANTY. 4TH FAILURE HAS NOT YET BEEN ADDRESSED. RIGHT TURN SIGNAL DOES NOT FUNCTION. FLASHER, BULBS AND FUSES ARE WORKING. OVER $1,600 INVESTED IN TURN SIGNAL PROBLEMS. *JB
HAVE HAD NUMEROUS TREAD BREAKAGES, THE TIRE TREAD IS FINE, DEALER STATED ALL TIRES ARE DRY ROTTED. *JB
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2002 DODGE DURANGO. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE GEARS FAILED TO SHIFT INTO PARK AND THAT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO REMOVE THE KEY. IN ADDITION, THE GEARS SHIFTED INDEPENDENTLY AND THE KEY WAS ABLE TO BE REMOVED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS STILL IN MOTION. THE CONTACT HAD TO APPLY THE EMERGENCY BRAKE AT TIMES TO PREVENT A FAILURE. THE DEALER REPLACED THE GEAR SHIFT CABLE AND AN S BRACKET, BUT THE FAILURE CONTINUED RANDOMLY. THE MANUFACTURER EXCLUDED THE VEHICLE FROM NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 07V555000 (POWER TRAIN). THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 24,347.
ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE FAILURE CAUSING HEADLIGHTS TO FLICKER ON AND OFF. WAS ADVISED BY THE DEALER THAT TOTAL FAILURE COULD RESULT. ALSO ADVISED THAT 700 OF THESE ITEMS ARE CURRENTLY ON BACK ORDER. I HAVE BEEN WAITING SINCE JULY FOR THIS PART. IT WOULD SEEM TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE. *JB
2002 DODGE DURANGO...WHEN VEHICLE GETS HOT...MAINLY IN SUMMER DRIVING CONDITIONS...IT WILL GO TO A VERY LOW IDLE..ALMOST TO THE POINT OF STALLING...HAVE FOUND OUT THROUGH VEHICLE REPAIRMAN THAT THE MANIFOLD HEAT SENSOR IS TOO CLOSE TO THE ACTUAL MANIFOLD AND THUS IT DOES ITS JOB...SLOWS THE ENGINE IDLE DOWN...IN OTHER WORDS THINKS THE ENGINE IS HOTTER THAN IT REALLY IS...THERE IS A AFTERMARKET KIT..COST 300 DOLLARS OR SO TO CORRECT THIS...CHRYSLER CORP WILL NOT REPAIR THIS...IT IS A DESIGN DEFECT AND SHOULD BE TAKEN CARE OF BY CHRYSLER...NOT BY THE VEHICLE OWNER...
I HAVE HAD TO HAVE THE VACUUM HOSES REPLACED IN MY 2002 DODGE DURANGO 4 TIMES SINCE BUYING IT IN JULY OF 2003. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON EVERY TIME. I HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT HAS WORKED ON IT, BUT THEY DON'T SEEM TO CARE. I HAD ONE OF THE MECHANICS SAY THEY HAVE SEEN THE PROBLEM BEFORE WHEN I HAD HIM SHOW ME WHERE THE HOSES WERE LOCATED. THE HOSES WERE CRACKED AND LOOKED LIKE THEY HAD BEEN ON THE CAR FOR 10 YEARS OR MORE, BUT IN ACTUALLITY IT HAD ONLY BEEN MONTHS. EVERYTIME, I HAVE HAD TO PAY $75 TO HAVE THE HOSE REPLACED EVEN THOUGH I HAD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. MY DURANGO IS NOW OUT OF WARRANTY AND THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AGAIN. I WENT TO A PARTS STORE TO HAVE THEM HOOK UP TO THE COMPUTER TO GET THE ERROR CODE--VACUUM LEAK AGAIN. WHEN THE PARTS STORE GUY LOOKED UNDER THE HOOD TO GET THE RIGHT LENGTH OF HOSE TO GIVE ME(GOING TO CHANGE IT MYSELF AND NOT PAY TO HAVE IT FIXED), HE SAID IT HAD NOT EVEN BEEN REPLACED WITH VACUUM HOSE. INSTEAD, ONE WAS REPLACED WITH FUEL LINE HOSE AND THE OTHER REPLACED WITH TRANMISSION HOSE. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM THAT I HAVE HAD AND IT DOESN'T SEEM TO MATTER TO THEM. IT ISN'T A SERIOUS PROBLEM, BUT IS STILL A PROBLEM. IF THE HOSE IS DEGRADING THAT QUICKLY, IT MUST BE SUBMITTED TO HIGH TEMPERATURES WHICH COULD LEAD TO A BIG PROBLEM. *NM

WE HAD AN APPOINTMENT TO REPLACE THE TIRES ON OUR 2002 DODGE DURANGO, 2X4 SXT. THE FIRESTONE MECHANIC CAME INTO THE WAITING ROOM AND INFORMED US THAT THE PASSENGER SIDE UPPER BALL JOINT WAS VERY BAD AND THE DRIVERS SIDE SHOWED SIGNS OF WEAR. THIS VEHICLE HAS 43500 MILES ON IT. THERE IS A RECALL ON THE 4X4 MODELS OF THE DURANGO, BUT NOT THE 2X4 MODELS. WHILE THEIR WAS NO INJURIES OR DEATHS INVOLVED, THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DEADLY PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED FOR ALL THE DURANGOS. *NM

THE CONTACT FOUND THAT THE NUT HOLING THE HUB ON THE FRONT DRIVER SIDE WAS LOOSE. THE DEALER HAS BEEN ALERTED. UPDATED 07/28/06. *JB

MY 2002 DODGE DURANGO PURCHASE NEW IN FEB. 2002, AND HAD DRIVEN FOR ABOUT 3 1/2 YEARS THE PASSENGER WINDOWS FAIL TO WORK. THE MASTER CONTROL IS THE ONLY WAY THAT I CAN OPEN THE WINDOWS. NOW ON OCCASION THE WINDOW WILL INTERMITTENTLY OPEN AND CLOSE USING THE INDIVIDUAL SWITCHES BUT IT IS VERY SELDOM HAVE TALKED TO SEVERAL OTHER OWNERS OF THESE DURANGOS AND THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM, WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THIS IS A MANUFACTURE DEFECT OR IS IT POSSIBLE THAT JUST SUDDENLY ALL MY PASSENGER WINDOW BROKE AT THE SAME TIME. OTHER THAN THAT I HAVE BEEN VERY SATISFIED WITH THE SERVICE OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE HAD IT SINCE I PURCHASED IT IN 2002 AND IT HAS ONLY 35,000 MILES ON IT. DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE BACKING OUT OF A DRIVE WAY AT 5 MPH, THE STEERING WAS TOO HARD TO OPERATE. NO WARNING LIGHTS WERE ILLUMINATED PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. THE VEHICLE WAS ALREADY SUBJECT TO A NHTSA RECALL #04V596000 REPAIR WHERE THE UPPER BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED. THE CONTACT NOTICED THERE WERE NO GREASERS TO MAINTAIN THE BALL JOINT LUBRICATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP WHO DETERMINED THE BALL JOINT SHOULD BE REPLACED AGAIN TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED WHO COINCIDED WITH THE DEALERSHIP. THE CONTACT EXPRESSED CONCERN BECAUSE THE VEHICLE HAD LESS THAN 50,000 MILES SINCE THE RECALL WAS PERFORMED AND ANOTHER REPLACEMENT WOULD NOT GUARANTEE THE BALL JOINT'S ENDURANCE.
I HAVE A 2002 DODGE DURANGO. IT HAS REAR ANTILOCK BRAKES. I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS CLOSE CALLS IN HARD STOP SITUATIONS WHERE THE WHEELS LOCK UP AND THE VEHICLE SLIDES FORWARD. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO A BRAKE SPECIALIST WHO AGREED AFTER A TEST RIDE THERE WAS A SERIOUS PROBLEM BUT SAID I NEEDED TO GET THE DEALER INVOLVED. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL DODGE DEALERS OVER A PERIOD OF ABOUT FOUR YEARS. THEY HAVE MADE SEVERAL RECOMMENDATIONS TO WHICH I HAD THE SERVICE DONE AND IT MADE NO DIFFERENCE. NOW THEY KEEP TELLING ME THERE IS NOTHING WRONG. I GOT DODGE REGIONAL INVOLVED LAST YEAR. THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE IT BACK TO THE DEALER AND HAVE THEM CHECK IT OUT. THE DEALER SAID THAT THE ABS WAS ENGAGING EARLY BUT DID NOTHING TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM. I RECENTLY REACHED DODGE REGIONAL AGAIN. HE SAYS HE TALKED TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALERSHIP WHO TOLD HIM THEY RECOMMENDED THE ROTORS BE REPLACES AND I REFUSED. I TOLD HIM THAT WAS A LIE THAT I HAD THE ROTORS AND PADS REPLACED. DODGE REGIONAL SAID THERE WAS NOTHING HE COULD DO TO HELP. HE SAID THE SERVICE MANAGER RECOMMENDED I BRING THE CAR IN FOR INSPECTION AGAIN AT ANOTHER $90. I TOLD HIM I REFUSE TO KEEP PAYING THESE FEES TO HAVE THEM TELL ME THERE'S NOTHING WRONG. I THEN PUT IN A CALL TO THE SERVICE MANAGER AT THE DEALER AND LEFT HIM A DETAILED MESSAGE ASKING HIM TO PLEASE RETURN MY CALL. HE NEVER RETURNED MY CALL. I HAVE ATTEMPTED TO REACH DODGE REGIONAL FOR THE LAST FEW DAYS AND HIS PHONE JUST RINGS WITH NO VOICEMAIL PICKING UP. I AM OUT OF IDEAS AND PATIENCE. I LOVE MY VEHICLE BUT IT IS A SEVERE HAZARD. IT SEEMS AS THOUGH ONCE AGAIN NOTHING WILL HAPPEN UNTIL SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SERIOUSLY INJURED BEFORE ANYTHING GETS DONE. I HAVE PLENTY OF DOCUMENTATION WITH MY COMPLAINTS TO THE DEALERS AS BACKUP. I HAVE A 2002 DODGE DURANGO AND I AM EXPERIENCING THE FOLLOWING PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS AND PARKING LIGHTS GO OFF AND ON WHILE DRIVING AT NIGHT. THIS ALSO OCCURS WHILE PARKED AND THE HEADLIGHTS ARE ON. STARTED ABOUT 3 DAYS AGO AND HAS GOTTEN WORSE. THE LIGHTS STAY OFF LONGER AND IT IS HAPPENING MORE FREQUENT. ALL INSIDE LIGHTS FLICKER AS WELL. I HAVE LOOKED ON THE FORUMS AND HAVE FOUND THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH THE 1999 - 2003 MODEL YEARS AND IN FACT, DODGE HAS A RECALL FOR THE 2003 YEAR FOR THE CENTRAL TIMER MODULE. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEEDS TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED AND FIXED. *JB
NO SPECIFIC EVENTS LEAD UP TO THIS FAILURE. THIS IS SIMPLY A DEFECTIVE, POORLY MANUFACTURER'S PART. I WAS LUCKY TO AVOID A SERIOUS INCIDENT IN THIS CASE, OTHERS MAY NOT BE. THE MAIN LEAF OF THE REAR LEAF SPRINGS BREAK AT THE FRONT EYE WHICH IS WHERE IT MOUNTS TO THE FRAME. IF THIS HAPPENS, THE REAR END IS FREE TO MOVE BACK AND FORTH AS MUCH AS THE SHACKLE WILL LET IT, EFFECTIVELY ALLOWING YOUR REAR AXLE TO STEER THE REAR OF YOUR VEHICLE WHEREVER IT MAY CHOOSE (READ: VERY DANGEROUS.) I REPLACED THE LEAF SPRING WITH THE ISSUE (THE DRIVER'S SIDE) WITH A DODGE OEM PART ($175 FOR THE PART, 1.9 LABOR HOURS ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP IF I WERE TO HAVE THEM REPLACE IT.) I'M A VERY COMPETENT MECHANIC, SO THE LABOR HOUR INQUIRY WAS JUST FOR MY RECORDS. UPON COMPLETING THE CORRECTION TO THE SIDE WITH THE FAILURE, AND DURING THE TEST DRIVE, I EXPERIENCED LITERALLY AN IDENTICAL FAILURE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE. AGAIN, I WAS LUCKY TO BE DRIVING SLOW AND PAYING ATTENTION ENOUGH TO NOTICE THE ISSUE BEFORE IT TURNED INTO A SERIOUS INCIDENT. I HAVE BOTH DEFECTIVE LEAF SPRINGS IN MY POSSESSION. THEY ARE BOTH OFF OF THE SAME VEHICLE, A 2002 DODGE DURANGO WITH JUST 60,000 MILES. THIS VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN USED TO TOW, HAUL, OR COMPLETE ANY OTHER STRENUOUS ACTIVITY. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE, WHEN JUST ONE BREAKS, THE REAR END HAS ENOUGH MOVEMENT TO STEER INTO THE CAR NEXT TO YOU. 2002 DODGE DURANGO SLT 2WD: BALL JOINTS WERE REPLACED AFTER RECALL WAS ISSUED, HOWEVER ABOUT 6 MONTHS AFTER THEY WERE REPLACED, THE EXACT SAME NOISES BEGAN OCCURRING AGAIN. TOOK CAR TO DEALER WITH THE COMPLAINT AND THEY DENIED THE NEW BALL JOINTS WERE WORN. UPON GETTING NEW FRONT TIRES INSTALLED AT SEARS (ABOUT 3 MONTHS AFTER THE DEALERSHIP INSPECTED THE JOINTS) THEY INSPECTED THE CAR WITHOUT BEING ASKED (IT IS PART OF THEIR SERVICE) AND ON THE REPORT THEY ISSUED, IT SAID THE BALL JOINTS WERE INDEED WORN. THE RECALL NOTICES I HAVE READ ABOUT THE REPLACEMENT OF THE ORIGINAL BALL JOINTS STATE THAT IF THE JOINTS FAIL YOU CAN LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, SO OBVIOUSLY I AM IN FEAR THAT MY CAR CAN FAIL AT ANY GIVEN TIME. I WAS DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT 55 MPH, 6 CAR LENGTHS BEHIND A VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME STOPPED ABRUPTLY (A DISABLE VEHICLE WAS IN THE LANE) AND WHEN I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKES, THE VEHICLE KEPT ROLLING AS IF NO BRAKES WERE APPLIED. MY FOOT WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. THERE WERE NO VIBRATIONS FROM THE ABS AS WELL AS NO LOWERING OF THE FRONT END, TYPICAL FROM BRAKING. I ENDED UP COLLIDING INTO THE VEHICLE AT ABOUT 30 MPH AND THE AIR BAGS DID NOT DEPLOY. I HAD PREVIOUSLY COMPLAINED SEVERAL TIMES TO MY DEALER THAT THE BRAKES WERE FAULTY IN A PANIC SITUATION. THE DEALERS DIAGNOSIS LOCATED THE FAILURE TO THE AIR BAG SENSOR ELECTRICAL WIRES. NO CODES WERE DISPLAYED REGARDING THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE GARAGE, BECAUSE THE FRONT TIRES FELT UNSTABLE WHILE DRIVING. THE TIRE MECHANIC STATED THE FRONT HUB CAP CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO FEEL UNSTABLE WHILE DRIVING. THE VEHICLE WASN'T REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WILL BE CONTACTED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 21,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 73,000.
WE WERE DRIVING APPROX. 70MPH ON INTERSTATE 20 IN GEORGIA NEAR GREENSBORO EXIT. THE TREAD SEPARATED FROM OUR LEFT REAR TIRE AND SENT US OUT OF CONTROL ON THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. THIS WAS AT 5:30 P.M. ON FRIDAY AUGUST 19, 2005 IN BUSY TRAFFIC.WE WERE HEADED ACROSS THE MEDIAN WHEN MY HUSBAND JERKED THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT AND WE HIT THE GUARD RAIL ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. I HAVE 45,000 MILES ON MY DODGE DURANGO. EVER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR NEW I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO KEEP THE VEHICLE ALIGNED. I HAVE GONE THROUGH SEVERAL SETS OF NEW TIRES. THEN I TOOK MY CAR TO FIRESTONE TO GET IT ALIGNED AND THEY TOLD ME MY UPPER CONTROL ARM ON THE RIGHT SIDE WAS SHOT AND IT WAS NOT HOLDING THE ALIGNMENT. SO NO I HAVE TO HAVE THIS REPLACED. ANTI-LOCK BRAKES - HAVE TO EXTEND STOPPING DISTANCE MORE THAN ANY OTHER CAR EVER OWNED. ANTI-LOCK ACTIVATES VERY EASY, BUT DOES NOT CAUSE DURANGO TO SLOW DOWN QUICKLY. DEALERSHIP SAID MASTER CYLINDER HAS INTERNAL LEAK AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACES - COST IS OVER $500. DURANGO ONLY HAS 60,000 MILES ON IT.
