MY 2004 DODGE DURANGO 5.7L AWD IS ENGAGING IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AT HIGH SPEEDS ON ITS OWN ON THE INTERSTATE. IT MADE A VERY LOUD GRINDING AND CLUNKING NOISE, THE SERVICE 4WD LIGHT WILL COME ON AND THEN TURN OFF AND THEN THE 4WD LO LIGHT WILL COME ON AND TURN OFF. I WAS FORCED TO PULL OFF THE ROAD AND IT FELT LIKE THE CAR WAS STUCK IN FOUR WHEEL DRIVE AND WILL NOT COME OUT. I TRIED TO PUT IT IN GEAR WHILE JUST SITTING STILL AND IT JUST MAKES THAT GRINDING NOISE. I HAD TO HAVE THE CAR TOWED AS I AM AFRAID THAT DRIVING IT WOULD CAUSE MYSELF OR OTHERS PHYSICAL HARM. PLEASE CONSIDER LOOKING INTO THIS MATTER BECAUSE AS I AM READING ON SEVERAL DODGE FORUMS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM AND CAN BE VERY SERIOUS TO DRIVERS AND OTHERS. I HAVE READ THAT THERE ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSFER CASE IN 2004 AND 2005 DODGE DURANGO. A BIG COMPANY SUCH AS DODGE SHOULD INVESTIGATE THE NEED FOR A POSSIBLE RECALL SINCE THESE PROBLEMS ARE BEING ADDRESSED ON DODGE FORUMS. AS FAR AS GETTING IT FIXED OR TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET IT FIXED IS THE NEXT PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNED A 2004 DODGE DURANGO. WHILE DRIVING 10 MPH, SMOKE BEGAN TO ENTER THE VEHICLE FROM THE DASHBOARD. WITHIN MINUTES, THE ENTIRE VEHICLE WAS ENGULFED IN FLAMES. THE FIRE DEPARTMENT EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. A FIRE REPORT WAS FILED. NO INJURIES WERE SUSTAINED. THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS NOT DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 135,000. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED.

THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBERS: 07V092000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM) AND 15V313000 (AIR BAGS) AND STATED THAT THE PART NEEDED FOR THE REPAIR WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE MANUFACTURER EXCEEDED A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME FOR THE RECALL REPAIR. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THE CONTACT HAD NOT EXPERIENCED A FAILURE. PARTS DISTRIBUTION DISCONNECT.
JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE TWO MONTHS AGO FROM DEALER IN NJ. WE HAD A HARD RAIN ABOUT A MONTH AGO, AND THE DURANGO WOULDN'T START IMMEDIATELY. I TURNED IT OVER AGAIN A FEW HOURS LATER AND IT STARTED WITH A HARD RUMBLE, BUT IT STARTED UP. IT DROVE FINE FOR ABOUT A MONTH, AND JUST AS THE WIFE AND I WERE LEAVING A GAS STATION, WE DROVE ABOUT FIFTY FEET AND HEARD A LOUD BANG. SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE, AND THE DURANGO WAS MAKING A NOISE LIKE METAL WAS ROLLING AROUND IN THE ENGINE. I STOPPED THE CAR, PULLING OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. I LOOKED UNDER THE DURANGO AND SAW OIL DRIPPING OUT FROM THE ENGINE. I GOT UNDER THE CAR TO INSPECT IT A LITTLE FURTHER AND SAW A DIME SIZE HOLE IN THE ENGINE BLOCK. I GOT THE CAR TOWED BACK TO MY HOME AS IT WAS SATURDAY AND THE MECHANIC WAS NOT OPEN. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER TOLD ME THAT THIS WAS THE THIRD DURANGO HE PICKED UP THAT DAY. NOT SAYING THAT ALL OF THE OTHER CARS WERE TOWED BECAUSE A BLOWN ENGINE, BUT YOU GET THE IDEA. DEALER WOULDN'T WARRANTY VEHICLE BECAUSE OF MILEAGE. I COULDN'T GET ANYONE TO WARRANTY THE DURANGO BECAUSE OF THE MILEAGE BEING OVER 150000. NOW IM TOLD I WILL HAVE TO BUY A REMANNED/NEW ENGINE FOR THIS CLUNKER. I WILL BE MAKING A COMPLAINT TO THE MANUFACTURER. I KNOW IT MAY NOT GO ANYWHERE. I HAVE READ ALL OF THE COMPLAINTS HERE AND ON THE INTERNET, FORUMS, ETC. ALL THE RESULT OF BLOWN ENGINES DUE TO "HYDRO-LOCKING", AND THE WIPER COWL DEFECT WERE WATER WOULD GET INTO THE ENGINE DURING HEAVY RAINS OR CAR WASHES. I HOPE OUR GOVERNMENT WOULD INTERVENE ON BEHALF OF ITS CITIZENS AND FORCE CHRYSLER TO ISSUE A RECALL OR AT LEAST BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A DEFECT THAT THEY CREATED, BUT I WON'T HOLD MY BREATH. MY DURANGO CURRENTLY HAS 160131 MILES ON IT, AND I GUESS IT'S GONNA STAY THAT WAY NOW BECAUSE IT CAN'T MOVE, AND I STILL OWE MONEY ON A SUV THAT I CANNOT DRIVE. NHTSA DO THE RIGHT THING.

IT WAS A RAINY DAY ON FRIDAY OCT. 2, 2015. THAT MORNING MY VEHICLE STARTED FINE, IT WASN'T UNTIL I CAME OUT OF WORK THAT EVENING WHEN I WENT TO START IT THE ENGINE MADE A LOUD SOUND AND IT WOULDN'T START. I TRIED A FEW TIMES UNTIL SUDDENLY IT TURNED ON AND IT WAS MAKING A KNOCKING NOISE. I THEN CALLED MY MECHANIC AND EXPLAINED THE SITUATION AND HE TOLD ME TO BRING IT TO THE SHOP SO THEY CAN PUT IT ON A LIFT TO TAKE A LOOK UNDERNEATH. AS I DROVE AWAY THE SOUND WAS UNBEARABLE AND THE FASTER I DROVE THE LOUDER IT GOT, SUDDENLY I HEARD A LOUD EXPLOSION AND THE VEHICLE STOPPED. IT FELT LIKE THE ENGINE FELL OUT, THERE WAS A LOT OF SMOKE AND OIL EVERYWHERE. I GOT THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE MY MECHANICS SHOP FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSING WHEN THEY TOLD ME THE ENGINE BLEW OUT. THE NEXT DAY I GOT A CALL AFTER THEY TOOK THE ENGINE APART AND TOLD ME THE BLOCK HAD A HOLE BECAUSE THE PISTON BLEW THROUGH IT. THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST MORE MONEY TO REBUILD MY ORIGINAL ENGINE THAN BUYING A USED ONE, I OPTED OUT ON THE USED ONE. AS I WAS HOME I WENT ONLINE AND DID SOME RESEARCH WHEN I COME TO FIND OUT THAT MANY PEOPLE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HAPPEN TO THEM WITH THE SAME VEHICLE ON A RAINY DAY OR WHEN THEY TOOK THEIR CAR THROUGH A CAR WASH. SO AS I DID MORE RESEARCH IT TURNS OUT THE WIPER COWL WHICH AT SOME POINT CHRYSLER CAME OUT WITH AN UPGRADE TENDS TO LEAK WATER ON TOP OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHICH IS ANOTHER BAD DESIGN, THEN SUCKS IN WATER INTO THE ENGINE EVENTUALLY CAUSING IT TO HYDRO LOCK. I BOUGHT MY VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN 2004 AND NOW I'M DISAPPOINTED THEY NEVER ISSUED A RECALL TO FIX THIS PROBLEM. I JUST PAID OVER $4000 TO REPAIR IT AND GOD KNOWS HOW LONG UNTIL THIS USED ENGINE GOES OUT WITH THE SAME PROBLEM. I FILED A COMPLAINT WITH DODGE AND SPOKE TO SOMEONE YESTERDAY FOR THEM TO TELL ME THAT MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY . PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS MATTER.

BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE 3 MONTHS AGO WITH JUST 52000 MILES AND RUNNING IN GOOD CONDITION. DURING THE WEEKEND OF 25TH OF SEPTEMBER 2015 IT RAINED AND UPON TRYING TO TURN ON THE VEHICLE TO GO TO WORK ON MONDAY AS USUAL, THE MOTOR/ENGINE WAS HYDROLOCKED. WATER HAD SEEPED INTO THE CYLINDERS AND THE MOTOR SUFFERED FAILURE AND BROKE RODS. I HAD INSTALLED THE NEWLY REDESIGNED COWL VENT GRILLE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO PREVENT THIS ,BUT IT DIDN'T WORK. DODGE COMPANY IS VERY WELL AWARE OF THEIR BAD ENGINEERING BUT WON'T RECALL THE VEHICLES AND PROTECT THEIR CUSTOMERS. I JUST LOST OVER 9000.00 DOLLARS IN INVESTMENT, INCLUDING TAXES FOR 700.00 + GETTING THE VEHICLE REGISTRATION, INSPECTED, TAGS, ETC. THE VEHICLE WASN'T IN MOTION WHEN THIS HAPPENED. IT WAS PARKED. NOT EVEN THEIR REDESIGNED COWL VENT GRILLE PREVENTS HYDROLOCK, WATER FROM LEAKING INTO THE INTAKE MANIFOLD, FROM HAPPENING.

THE DRIVER SUSTAINED MINOR CUTS AND BRUISES ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE UPPER BODY THAT REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. A POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THE VEHICLE WAS DESTROYED. SERVICE 4WD LITE CAME ON, TRUCK STARTED JERKING AND BINDING ON TURNS. CYCLED SWITCH THRU AWD, 4LOCK AND 4 LO, SEEMED TO BE OK FOR AWHILE THEN LOCKED IN 4LOCK AND STAYED THERE UNTIL DRIVEN A MILE DOWN A BUMPY DIRT ROAD. REPAIR SHOP SERVICED TRANSFER CASE BUT NOW ITS STUCK IN 4LOCK, THEY SUSPECT SHIFT MOTOR BUT NONE ARE AVAILABLE. INTERNET COMPLAINTS SEEM TO POINT TO ELECTRICAL ISSUE, TEMPORARY FIX IS TO UNPLUG SHIFT MOTOR IF YOU CAN GET IT INTO AWD BUT DODGE NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A PERMANENT FIX FOR THIS.
I HAVE HAD THIS SUV FOR JUST A FEW MONTHS THE DAY I MAD MY FIRST PAYMENT IT WENT INTO THE SHOP TO BE FIXED. AT FIRST IT WAS APPARENTLY MY #5 PISTON SHOT THRU THE BLOCK WITH ONLY 120,000 MILE ON IT. THAN AFTER SPENDING THE $3,700 TO GET THAT FIXED IT WAS STILL SMOKING AND HAVING ISSUES. NEXT THING I KNOW IT IS NOW THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WHITCH WAS ANOTHER $700.00 AND IT WAS 84 IN BACK ORDER WHEN I SEEN THAT I PULLED IT UP ONLINE WERE I READ THAT THOUSANS AND THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE HAD THIS SAME PROBLEM WITH THE FIRST YEAR OF THE HEMI MOTOR IN THE DURANGO. I HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN AND I SUPPORT MY KIDS AND HUSBAND DUE TO HIS SPINE SURGERYS. I FEEL IF THERE HAS BEEN THIS MANY PARTS GO BAD THAT IT SHOULD HAVE A RECALL WITH IT. I CANT AFFORD TO KEEP PUTTING MONEY IN SOMETHING THAT IS STILL NOT GOING TO DRIVE PROPERLY WITH MY CHILDREN IN IT. IT HAS SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING THE SUV. IT IS NOT SAFE FOR MY KIDS TO BE IN IM AFRAID THEY WILL BE HURT OR KILLED IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN. DODGE NEEDS TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND HAVE THISS RECALLED AS SOON AS THEY CAN. RECEIVED RECALL, REF AIRBAG PROBLEM, CALLED CROSSWROADS DODGE, 4510 WHITEHILL BLVD, PRINCE GEORGE, VA ON SEPT. 8,201, WAS TOLD THAT THE DEALERSHIP DID NOT HAVE REPAIR PARTS BUT WOULD PLACE MY NAME ON LIST TO BE CONTACTED WHEN PARTS COME IN. CALLED BACK ON NOV 30, 2015, WAS AGAIN TOLD THAT PARTS HAVE NOT COME IN, AND THERE IS A LIST OF 300 OTHER CUSTOMERS WAITING TO BE CALLED, BUT I WOULD BE NOTIFIED WHEN PARTS COME IN. AS OF TODAY DEC 15, 2015, HAVE NOT RECEIVED CALL FROM DEALERSHIP.

AFTER HEAVY RAINS THE ENGINE WOULD RUN ROUGH AND THEN SMOOTH OUT. THEN DURING ONE HEAVY RAIN I TRIED TO START THE VEHICLE AND HEARD A LOUD KNOCKING. I BROUGHT IT TO THE SHOP AND THEY DETERMINED THAT IT HAD HYDROLOCKED DUE TO WATER GETTING INTO THE INTAKE GASKET FROM THE COWL. AFTER TWO MONTHS OF AGRUING WITH THE WARRANTY COMPANY AND THE DEALER, THE WARRANTY COMPANY COVERED ALL BUT 1000 DOLLARS OF THE ENGINE REPLACEMENT BUT THE COWL IS NOT REPLACED. I FEAR THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN AGAIN.

DRIVERS SIDE AIR BAG WARNING LIGHT IS ILLUMINATING OFF AND ON. DUE TO THE SERIOUS NATURE OF THE RECALL AND INABILITY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED I WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICHLE. HOW LONG DO WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR A RESOLVEMENT?
AUG 21 @ 1030AM. MY FIANC, OUR DAUGHTER AND I WERE ABOUT TO LEAVE OUR HOME. I WENT TO THE CAR AND STRAPPED OUR DAUGHTER INTO HER CAR SEAT WHILE MY FIANC HAD BAGS AT THE FRONT OF OUR APARTMENT BUILDING. TURNED ON THE CAR IT STRUGGLED TO TURN OVER, WENT CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK. I TURNED IT OFF. CALLED MY FIANC TO COME UP TO OUR PARKING SPOT TO HAVE A LOOK. HE COULDN'T SEE ANYTHING IMMEDIATELY. CALLED A TOW BUT IN THE MEANTIME A FRIEND WHO KNOWS A BIT ABOUT CARS CAME BY, LOOKED UNDER THE CAR AND FOUND PIECES OF THE ENGINE AS WELL AS LEAKING ENGINE OIL UNDER THE CAR. THE DISCUSSION WAS THAT IT HAD BLOWN A ROD AND THE ENGINE WAS DONE. AT THIS POINT IN TIME I CAN'T AFFORD TO GET IT WORKED ON, SO IT IS STILL SITTING IN THE SAME PLACE. THE DESCRIPTION IS SO SIMILAR TO OTHER REPORTS OF A ROD GOING THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK. LUCKILY WE WEREN'T ON THE ROAD DRIVING WHEN IT HAPPENED AND EVERYONE IS SAFE. FOR A PROBLEM LIKE THIS THAT IS OBVIOUSLY RECURRING DUE TO THE ENGINES BEING DEFECTIVE HOW CAN DODGE NOT STILL BE RESPONSIBLE.
THIS COMPLAIN INVOLVE SEVERAL ISSUES THAT CONSTANTLY HAPPENS. THE FIRST ISSUE IS THAT THE INTERIOR LIGHTS AND INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHTS ILLUMINATED INTERMITTENTLY AND I CAN HEAR A BUZZING SOUND WHEN IT DOES THIS. THE SECOND IS THAT THE BATTERY DIES AND I HAVE TO JUMP START OR CHARGE IT MANUALLY MOST DAYS. THIRD, EVERY DAY I HAVE TO POUR COOLANT INTO MY RADIATOR BECAUSE THERE IS A LEAK SOMEWHERE EITHER THE WATER PUMP OR RADIATOR. FOURTH, WHEN IT RAINS, WATER GETS INSIDE VIA THE DOOR SEAMS. AFTER AN OVERNIGHT RAINSTORM, VEHICLE WAS STARTED AND DRIVEN APPROXIMATELY 1/4 MILE WHEN THE ENGINE THREW A ROD THROUGH THE ENGINE BLOCK. WE HAD HAD ISSUES PRIOR TO THIS OF THE VEHICLE NOT STARTING AFTER A RAIN EVENT. IT WOULD START AFTER DRYING OUT. THOUGHT IT WAS THE STARTER AND HAD THE STARTER REPLACED TWICE. I JUST REPLACED THE ENGINE WITH A USED ENGINE THAT WITH PARTS AND LABOR COST ME $4,800. I SEE THAT THIS IS A SOMEWHAT COMMON ISSUE WITH THIS VEHICLE AND WANTED TO BE ON RECORD.

WE HAVE NOW CHECKED WITH THREE DODGE DEALERS IN THE GREATER SAN ANTONIO AREA TO GET THIS SAFETY RECALL HANDLED. EVERY DEALER HAS INDICATED THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS IN STOCK, CHRYSLER HAS NOT RELEASED THE PARTS AND/OR CHRYSLER WILL NOT ALLOW THE DEALERS TO SPECIAL ORDER THE PARTS. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. THEREFORE, I AM FILING A COMPLAINT AT THIS TIME. DEALERSHIP BODY SHOT PERSONNEL NOTED THAT 'THESE DURANGO'S AND DAKOTAS ALL RUST OUT BAD - AND IT HAPPENS FAST'. VERY TELLING. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN FULLY MAINTAINED THROUGHOUT OWNERSHIP AND HAS BEEN GARAGED CONTINUALLY. WE DO LIVE IN THE 'RUST-BELT' AREA - BUT WE ARE IN NO WAY PLEASED WITH THE CONDITION OF THIS VEHICLE. TO DATE - THE RUST IS EXPANDING TO MOST LOWER BODY PARTS EXPOSED TO WEATHER AND THE SPEED AT WHICH ITS - LITERALLY - DISINTEGRATING IS RIDICULOUS. THE REPAIR NOW WILL COST NEARLY $6000 AND WE SIMPLY DO NOT FEEL IT IS WORTH DOING.
