FORD IS RECALLING CERTAIN REPLACEMENT FUEL TANKS THAT COULD BE INSTALLED INTO MODEL YEAR 2004 THROUGH 2008 E-150, E-250, AND E-350 VANS AND WAGONS. THE AFFECTED FUEL TANKS HAVE AN EXTRA OBDII SENSOR HOLE ON THE TOP OF THE TANK THAT MAY NOT BE PROPERLY SEALED AND MAY LEAK FUEL.
Remedy Status

CERTAIN AFTERMARKET FUEL FILTERS SOLD UNDER THE PUROLATOR BRAND NAME, P/N F65277, SHIPPED FROM JANUARY 16 THROUGH JUNE 2, 2006, FOR USE ON THE ABOVE LISTED PASSENGER VEHICLES. DUE TO INCORRECT DESIGN, THE QUICK CONNECTORS MAY NOT FULLY SEAT WITH THE TUBE INTERFACE, EVEN THOUGH THE PERSON MAKING THE CONNECTION MAY BELIEVE THAT THE QUICK CONNECTOR IS FULLY ATTACHED.

DUE TO TIME, TEMPERATURE, AND/OR VIBRATION, THE FUSE MAY LOOSEN IN THE FUSE HOLDER RESULTING IN HIGH RESISTANCE AND ARCING.

The contact owned a 2005 Ford E-350. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 MPH he smelled a burning odor and saw that the vehicle was trailing a large white cloud. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact pulled over and as soon as he exited the vehicle it had become engulfed in flames. The contact stated that the flames came from under the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle burned, the contact stated the fire department was not able to locate his vehicle and later the police had called him and left a voice message advising him that the vehicle had been towed to an impound lot. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The contact had researched online and related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 11E047000 (Fuel System, Gasoline). The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.
ONLY 87000 MILES AND THE FUEL TANK IS SHEDDING SILVER PAINT FLAKES, INTO THE FUEL SYSTEM.. HAVE NOW REPLACED ALL THE FILTERS TWICE, PUMP ONCE.. AND THE TANK PRE FILTER HAS TO BE CLOGGED AS NO FUEL WILL EVEN COME OUT.. HAD BEEN A VERY GOOD TRUCK, BUT THIS ENGINEERING CAUSES THE VAN TO JUST DIE!! ON THE ROAD. THIS IS APPARENTLY A COMMON PROBLEM AND ONE THAT FORD AND THEIR ENGINEERS ARE NOT BEING RESPONSIBLE FOR.. REALLY... PAINT INSIDE AT FUEL TANK? WTF ARE THEY THINKING...

UPON INSPECTION, THE CONTACT DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL INJECTION CONTROL MODULE WIRE HARNESS FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 05V270000 (ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 90,000.

WHILE DRIVE ON HIGHWAY,VEHICLE BEGAN TO LOSE POWER WHEN I ENCOUNTERED A HILL. IT BOGGED DOWN AND STRUGGLED TO MAKE IT TO TOP OF HILL AND LOST SPEED DOWN TO 30 MPH OR LESS AND THEN DIED. IT WOULD NOT START RIGHT AWAY, BUT AFTER LETTING IT SIT FOR 15 MINUTES, IT STARTED AND HAD REGAINED POWER AND I DROVE IT TILL I GOT TO THE NEST HILL AND DID THE SAME THING SEVERAL TIMES TILL I MADE IT HOME 3 HOURS LATER FOR A 10 MILE TRIP. I CHECKED ONLINE ON THE VEHICLE FOR FORD OWNERS FORUM AND SAW THAT SEVERAL PEOPLE ENCOUNTERED THIS PROBLEM BEFORE AND DESCRIBED IT AS BOGGING DOWN AND LOSING POWER. SOME ONE SUGGESTED CHANGING THE EGR VALVE WHICH I HAD DONE, AND THE FUEL FILTERS AS WELL AS AIR FILTER. WHEN I REMOVED THE BOTTOM FUEL FILTER UNDER THE VAN, I CAPTURED THE FUEL IN THE FILTER AND LINE AND IT HAD WHAT LOOKED LIKE SILVER PAINT. I KEPT THE SAMPLE AND IT IS SOFT AND PLIABLE. I ASSUMED IT WAS A PROTECTIVE COATING LINING THE FUEL TANK. I DON'T BELIEVE THIS SHOULD BE HAPPENING,BECAUSE IT COULD DO DAMAGE TO THE INJECTORS AND OTHER THINGS. *TR
THIS BUS IS OWNED BY FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF GRANT, AL. ABOUT ONE YEAR AGO WE STARTED HAVING TIMES WHEN THE BUS WOULD CRANK BUT NOT START. OUR MECHANIC HAS CHECKED IT FOUR DIFFERENT TLIMES, HOWEVER, EVERY TIME EXCEPT THIS TIME (5TH TIME) IT STARTED WHEN HE WENT TO CHECK IT. THIS TIME WE WERE TAKING OUR SENIORS ON A TRIP, BUT WHEN WE WENT TO CRANK IT, IT CRANKED BUT WOULD NOT START. WE HAD IT TOWED TO WOODY ANDERSON FORD IN HUNTSVILLE, AL. I SPOKE WITH THE TRUCK SERVICE MANAGER TODAY AND HE TOLD ME THE ENGINE WIRING HARNESS WAS BAD. THIS BUS ONLY HAS 30,000 MILES ON IT. IT HAS BEEN AT WOODY ANDERSON FORD 4 DAYS. I KNOW RECALLS ARE BASED ON THE VIN NUMBER PRIMARILY. THIS IS A LIKE NEW BUS AND ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE FUEL INJECTORS, TURBO CHARGER, AND A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT SENSORS. ANYONE WITH ANY COMMON SENSE KNOWS THAT IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR AN ENGINE WIRING HARNESS TO GO BAD. FORD MOTOR COMPANY NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND RESPONSIBLE FOR REPLACING AN ENGINE COMPONENT THAT SHOULD LAST AS LONG AS YOU OWN THE VEHICLE. THERE IS A RECALL ON SOME VEHICLES WITH A 6.0L DIESEL ENGINE WITH PROBLEMS LIKE OURS, IT IS RECALL # 05S34. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SAID IT WOULD COST $3000.00 TO REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. DRIVING UPHILL ON I-70 EASTBOUND BY SILVERTHORNE, CO THE ENGINE SIMPLY QUIT. LIMPED TO SIDE OF HIGHWAY AND TRIED TO RESTART - NOTHING. BATTERIES ARE NEW, ETC JUST NO TURNING OVER OF THE ENGINE. THOUGHTS ARE A BAD FICM, WHICH THERE IS SUPPOSEDLY A RECALL BUT FORD DENIED THAT WHEN I CALLED THIS MORNING. HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A SHOP IN ARVADA, CO FOR DIAGNOSIS AND REPAIRS. SOUNDS LIKE THE EGR SYSTEM IS ABOUT TO GO, THE FICM IS SHOT AND WIRING HARNESS FOR COMPUTER IS GONE - ALL THINGS FORD IS AWARE OF BUT ADAMANTLY REFUSES TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 158,000.

GOODRICH COMMERCIAL T/A TIRES HE PURCHASED SOME TIME AGO. THE CONSUMER WENT TO A TIRE SERVICE CENTER, TO HAVE THE TIRES CHECKED. THE MANAGER INFORMED THE CONSUMER, THAT ONE OF THE FOUR TIRES WERE IN THE RECALL GROUP. THE MANAGER STATED IN ORDER FOR THE RECALL TO BE HONORED, THE CONSUMER HAD TO PURCHASE AT LEAST TWO TIRES. IN ADDITION, HE COULD GET ANOTHER BRAND OF TIRES AND RECEIVE CREDIT FOR THE VALUE OF THE COMMERCIAL T/A TIRES AGAINST THE PURCHASE. THE CONSUMER STATED WHEN HE DROPPED THE VAN OFF, HE ASKED THAT THE USED TIRES BE PLACED IN THE VEHICLE, SO HE COULD VERIFY IF THE TIRES FELL UNDER THE RECALL. THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. THE CONSUMER STATED THE REPAIR CENTER'S IDEA OF HONORING THE RECALL, WAS TO CHARGE HIM FOR ONE TIRE AT THE NEW COMMERCIAL T/A PRICE. THE MANAGER STATED THE CONSUMER DID NOT GET THE CREDIT FOR THE ONE TIRE, BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE TO BUY THE EXACT SAME TIRE.
I HAD AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLE HAVING A SUDDEN MISS FROM THE ENGINE WHILE ON THE FREEWAY. SATURDAY THE SPARKPLUGS AND ONE COIL PACK WAS REPLACED. THE VEHICLE WAS NEXT DRIVEN ON SUNDAY EVENING WHERE APPROX. 1/2 MILE FROM THE HOME THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF WITHOUT ANY POWER TO THE STEERING AND BRAKES. INSTRUMENTS LIGHTS WERE STILL WORKING BUT DROPPED TO THE OFF POSITION. I OPENED THE HOOD AND SMELLED ELECTRICAL FUMES, NOT BEING ABLE TO SEE WHAT WAS WRONG, I DISCONNECTED THE BATTERY WITH A PAIR OF CHANNELOCKS. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED HOME AND I BEGAN TO INVESTIGATE THE ISSUE. I FOUND THAT THE PCM/ECM HAD BEEN RENDERED PERMANENTLY NONFUNCTIONAL CAUSING THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. THE WIRING HAD A 1.5" BY 2" & 3/4" DEEP BURNT/MELTED AREA ON A ROUGHLY 2" ROUND HARNESS. I FURTHER FOUND THAT THE MAIN WIRING HARNESS FROM THE PCM/ECM IN THE FACTORY INSTALLED POSITION HAD BEEN RUBBING FOR SOME TIME ON AN EXHAUST COMPONENT WRAPPED WITH FIBERGLASS. THE PLASTIC WRAPPING AND METAL WRAPPING WAS OBVIOUSLY BREACHED AND EXPOSED THE WIRING TO BE GROUNDED TO THE EXHAUST COMPONENT AND ALSO WAS THE FIBERGLASS ON THE EXHAUST COMPONENT HAD WORN OFF EXPOSING BARE HEATED METAL. THE EXCESSIVE HEAT HELPED TO MELT INTO THE WIRING AND NO FUSES WERE BLOWN. THE PROTECTION HAD BEEN INADEQUATE TO PROVIDE A SAFE OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE. THE ENGINE IS A 5.4L GASOLINE WHICH THE SEALED FUEL SOURCE IS APPROX. 1 FT. AWAY. I THINK ANY OF THE E-SERIES VANS THAT YEAR NEED TO BE INSPECTED BECAUSE OF STALLING AND FIRE ISSUES. I AM A 6'2 230 LB PERSON AND HAD DIFFICULTY SLOWING THE VEHICLE ON A VACANT STREET, STEERING WASN'T AS BAD BUT REQUIRED ADEQUATE FORCE. I DO HAVE PHOTOS OF THE HARNESS AND EXHAUST COMPONENT. THE ECM/PCM IS ROUGHLY $1200.00 AND THE WIRING HARNESS IS AROUND $670.00 BEFORE ANY LABOR OR TECHNICAL COSTS. I WILL INSPECT ALL THE OTHER WIRE LOCATIONS FOR OTHER ISSUES. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER WHO ADVISED THAT THE FUEL TANK LINER HAD DETERIORATED. THE TECHNICIAN ALSO INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE FUEL TANK, FUEL PUMP AND INJECTORS WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE FUEL FILTERS WOULD REQUIRE REPLACEMENT. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE PROBLEM. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 82,867.

THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE AS IT COASTED OFF THE RAMP AND ONTO A SECOND HIGHWAY WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS MANEUVERED TO THE SHOULDER. THE CONTACT WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE YET IT CONTINUED TO STALL REPEATEDLY. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL MECHANIC WHERE THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED THAT THE INJECTION PUMP AND INJECTION CONTROL SENSOR WAS DEFECTIVE AND WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. IN ADDITION, THE MECHANIC ADVISED THAT THE HIGH PRESSURE OIL PUMP WAS DAMAGED AND THE HOUSING WHICH WOULD ALSO NEED REPLACING. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND ADVISED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN ANY RECALLS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 67,294 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 67,310.

CONSUMER STATES WHILE PULLING INTO A PARKING LOT AND APPLYING THE BRAKES, THE VAN'S BRAKES FAILED TO OPERATE CAUSING A COLLISION *TGW THE CONSUMER STATED THE VACUUM PUMP ATTACHED TO THE ENGINE FAILED. *JB THE CONSUMER STATED THE BRAKE, WAS A MAJOR COMPONENT THAT FAILED AND THERE WAS NO WARNING OF A FAILURE. MY MECHANIC DESCRIBED AND CONFIRMED THE SYMPTOMS IN NHTSA #10022243, WHERE THE LINING OF THE FUEL TANK IS SEPARATING FROM THE TANK AND CLOGGING THE FUEL FILTER AND FUEL PUMP. THIS CAUSES LOSS OF POWER PRIMARILY ON THE FREEWAY. IT CONSISTENTLY GETS WORSE WHERE IT HAPPENS EVERY FEW MINUTES. THE REPAIRS OTHERS HAVE MADE HAVE BEEN TO GET A NEW TANK OR BOIL OUT AND RE-COAT THE DEFECTIVE TANK. I PLAN TO BOIL IT OUT AS THAT IS THE ONLY OPTION I CAN AFFORD. *TR
