NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 Ford Edge. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact’s daughter owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, his daughter had to apply added pressure to the brake pedal to coast the vehicle to a stop. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the vacuum pump and brake booster had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was notified of the failure and the contact was provided an estimate for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the VIN was not included in Customer Satisfaction Program Number: 13N02. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.
Started with a "spongy" pedal feel that included a noticeable effect on braking performance. Great force was necessary in order to stop the vehicle. Occurred and worsened quickly and felt incredibly unsafe - like my breaks would give out at any minute. Break booster was replaced at Ford dealership, but not covered under "Customer Satisfaction Program" extended warranty #13N02. I was six months over the cut-off date. Not Happy.
The brakes failed to function with no warning whatsoever! The pedal immediately went to the floor with no result. This would have cause an accident had we not been on an empty road with no traffic. The vehicle is available for inspection. The is a HUGE risk to the safety of my family and other drivers and pedestrians who might be struck by a vehicle that cannot stop. This can definitely result in severe injuries or death. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the problem could not be duplicated, even though they tried by slowly driving the vehicle for 2 days. For precautions sake, the rotors and pads were replaced and the brake system components checked and fluid bled. We then took the vehicle back and drove it for about a week in various traffic situations without incident. Today, the same failure occurred. By shear grace of God, we were on a road with no traffic again! I have now been reading all the reports on this NHTSA site and am extremely concerned that NHTSA has not forced a recall. This is clearly a repetitive and frequent issue. with Ford Edge vehicles! DO SOMETHING NOW BEFORE SOMEONE DIES OR IS SERIOUSLY INJURED. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This first appeared April, 2023.
I took very good care of my car's engine and while driving on the highway the engine block cracked open immediately shutting the car down, almost causing a crash and spilling oil all over the road for no apparent reason. There were no issues with the engine and no check engine lights were on.
2013 Ford edge sport water pump defect leaking into the engine causing it to stop in traffic which was dangerous because oil and antifreeze mixed together now it want run.
We began experiencing a "hissing" noise when the brake pedal was depressed. Additionally, the pedal feels stiff, and occasionally the brakes will not engage at all without significant pressure being applied to the brake pedal. We took the vehicle to a Ford dealership, they ran diagnostics, and they confirmed that the brake booster is failing. We discovered that this was a known issue with 2013 Ford Edge vehicles. Ford has a Customer Satisfaction Program (13N02) that was published in its TSB (SB-10054925-6246). This CSP recommends that the brake booster be repaired and extends warranty coverage of the part for certain "2010-2013 model year Edge and MKX vehicles built at the Oakville Assembly Plant from May 3, 2010 through March 28, 2013." I have been told by Ford Motor Company that my vehicle is not covered under this CSP because its VIN was not identified as being affected and, while it was made at Oakville, it was made in November of 2013. Therefore, according to Ford, they are not liable to cover the part replacement despite the fact that the issue we're having is the same issue that Ford has identified in other vehicles of the same make, model year, and built at the same assembly plant.
All 4 door ajar sensor are not showing that the doors are close which does not allow you to lock ,which also cause the battery to be drained due to the interior lights remaining powerd as if the doors are open !!!!! This is a personal saftey issue for children and adults ,and a theft issue due to locks not locking !!!!!!!!!!! 500.00 dollars a door is insane for a stupid design !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ford needs to fix this at their expense irregardless of age or miles or number of owners for these vehicles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET IT FIXED !!!!
On April 7th my seat belt receiver (where the seat belt clicks into) broke. It broke with just normal wear and tear, my car has 83K+ miles. The seatbelt would not fully engage and the seatbelt light was coming on every two minutes while driving. I called Downtown Ford (Sacramento) and they said that because my car was outside their 60,000 mile or five year warranty that this part was not covered. I paid to have the part replaced which cost $95.81 for the part and $221 an hour for labor. The total was $324.19
The Brake Booster continually fails on this vehicle. It is part of a much larger issue that Ford has acknowledged. On more than 30 occasions the brake booster has failed causing the brakes to fail. The latest happened today (03/30/23) when I had to brake hard to avoid a near head-to-head collision. This time, when the brakes failed I had to swerve into oncoming traffic, then back into my lane after passing the vehicle that came into our lane from a cross street. We were going UNDER the speed limit, which is 45MPH at that intersection. I was finally able to stop after using the manual shifting option to downshift and slow the car enough that the brakes would actually work. The pedal went to the floor when I had to hit the brakes hard to try and avoid the oncoming vehicle. When I contacted Ford I was asking about: Extended warranty coverage on brake booster Campaign# 13N02 I was told by Ford that this vehicle is not covered under this campaign, even though it states that the vehicle must be no more than 10 years old (it is a 2013 vehicle, AND sold as a 2013 vehicle by description from Ford Motor Company) and it is under the 150,000 mile limit. There are a LOT of people that are facing this issue as well, ergo the campaign from Ford. THEY recognize that this is an issue - this should be a recall, not some sort of campaign that Ford is using to try and avoid one. The three of us nearly lost our live THIS time when the brakes failed. How many people WILL die before this actually becomes a recall? The same should be said of the Ford Campaign #19N09 - Door latch failure. The door could come open while driving under this campaign. These should be recalls that Ford MUST fix. Please do not let my Granddaughter get into a crash because of this. She is our ward because of Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Scoliosis and other issues that she faces in life. Isn't that enough for her to deal with? What is this was YOUR Granddaughter? Would it be a recall then?
5 times in the past 2 years I lost the brakes. Each time the car was going at low speed coming up on a stop sign or traffic light, probably 10-15 mph, and hit a pothole with brakes lightly applied. The ABS kicked in on each of those occasions. The car could still be braked, but the pedal immediately went to the floor and stopping distances were increased. The first 4 times it happened, the brakes returned to normal operation after the car sat overnight. After the 4th time I learned that there was a 10-year brake booster extended warranty, so I had that done and all was fine. On the 5th time, just recently, I was again approaching a light in a construction zone at very slow speed, with the brakes lightly applied. I hit a shallow trench that had been dug in the pavement, and the ABS kicked in and the pedal went to the floor. I still had braking power, but it seemed worse than the other 4 times. Unlike those times, the situation did not resolve after the car sat overnight. Brake fluid was filled to the "fill line" and there did not appear to be air in the lines, and there was no leakage of fluid anywhere. I brought the car to the Ford dealer and was told it was an HCU (hydraulic control unit) failure. I searched online and was appalled to see how many people have had the exact same issue, and some reported serious accidents and injuries. Ford says there is a "national backorder" on the HCU, and they have no estimated ship date. In short, my otherwise perfectly good car has become worthless because Ford can't supply the part and it is too dangerous to drive, and I can't trade it in with this defect. I'm fortunate that there was no accident, but I believe this is a very serious safety issue that seems to have been known by Ford for some time. I'm sure you've had similar complaints, and the extent of the problem will become clear with a 5 minute online search. I sincerely believe this is a safety issue that deserves a recall. Thank you.
Car started shaking when I started to slow down at a red light and then loss power in the road. This continued to happen. Finally engine light came on I took it to get scanned came back 02 sensor. I will take it back to the dealer on Tuesday. My car just shutting off with two kids in the backseat going down the road is not okay and a huge safety issue.
I have filed a complaint several Times regarding my car. After several times (3) times of getting my fuel valve replaced it is having issues again. This probably has given me incorrect gas milage and has lost power on me going down the road mid drive with 2 kids in the back seat almost causing an accident. This is unacceptable and as soon as something happens there will be a lawsuit. I have replaced this part 3-4 times now and still getting codes and having my car just randomly loose power and shut off. Something needs to be done about the purge valve malfunctioning system on these cars before someone like myself and kids get extremely hurt.

On my way to work early morning dark outside the water pump which is timing chain driving failed fluid poured out causing smoke and hard to see out the windshield causing me to have to pull to the side of the road not able to safely see, dark road no traffic 30 miles away from home mechanic told me 3000.00 $ to fix the problem ford should of never built a vehicle like this knowingly that the water pump was not accessible you have to tear the whole engine down, i owe more on the car then what it's worth and to fix the vehicle it would even cost me more then what it is worth. Now I'm making payments on a car that I can not drive
Passenger Seatbelt locks when pulling out to buckle and rear seatbelt behind driver seat will not lock in the seat belt lock.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the dashboard was cracked nearby the passenger's side air bag compartment. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the dashboard needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 178,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while approaching a red traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The vehicle failed to come to an immediate stop and instead coasted at a low speed. The contact turned off the vehicle and the vehicle come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who replaced the rotors and brake pads. The contact stated that after the repairs the brakes started to lock-up. The service stabili-trac, stability failure, and other warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was returned to the certified mechanic who replaced the brake booster and brake master cylinder. The failure persisted. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 195,582.
2013 FORD EDGE-Consumer had already taken vehicle for tune up 2 months after purchase. Consumer heard bad thumping noise from back of vehicle. Consumer took it to a mechanic and was told about Recall # 14V393000- Power Train: Axle Assembly. Axle Shaft. Consumer mentioned the 15 yr. rule. Consumer replaced power train, new brake shoes, and rotors. Dealership where vehicle was purchased never informed consumer before the purchase of the recall. Consumer states others have reported similar experience from same dealer. Retail installment contract attached.
Upon occasion brakes go all the way to the floor and require pumping to get them to work. This does not happen on a regular basis but if the car is not driven eg overnight brake failure will happen 50% of the time. Once pumped up then everything will be ok. Except if we are are on a long trip with few stops or need to break, then the problem will re-occur. No leakage that we could find. The Ford dealer that we bought the EDGE, - new and always had it serviced could find no fault. A week or so ago I took it to another dealer. The Ford service manager, drove it around for 30-40 minutes, I was with him. A minor failure did occur. They kept it for additional days and determined front calibers was most likely the problem. I believe that our EDGE VIN number should be included with the rest of t;he 2013 Edge break problems and that Ford should pay for the repair.0
The backup camera works when it feels like it and the monitor glitches when it is working as well as things appear upside down and blurred when in reverse. The camera stays on for a minute after gear is placed in drive. The radio goes in and out. The screen freezes up after disconnecting a hands free call. The brakes feel like they’re locking up when pressed and makes a clunking sound.
- Component/system malfunctioning: Brake system (Master Cylinder) randomly loses pressure from the master cylinder causing the brake pedal to collapse to the floor causing severe safety concerns with little to no brakes without warning. Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. - Our Safety and the safety of others is at risk due to brakes not working properly at all times due to a known issue with this vehicle models master cylinder. - The problem has been addressed and confirmed by service tech. No external brake system leakage and the TSB is to replace the master cylinder at owners cost. No warranty or recall!!! - There have been NO warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the intermittent failure.
Brakes go all the way to the floor with zero resistance. Very scary. Hard to stop. Like hydraulic system is gone
Backfiring and brakes don’t work.
I have a 2013 ford edge and I was driving at 40=45 mph and when I came up to a light the brake peddle went to the floor and was very hard to stop. The result was me having to leave the road to the right to avoid a collision. I took it to ford who stated it needed a brake booster and said my vehicle doesn't qualify for an extended warranty on the booster. Car had 88k miles at time of incident.prior to the incident no lights or signs. After this I hear a loud hissing noise from under dash.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while attempting to depress the brake pedal, the brake pedal made a hissing sound and went to the floorboard and then became firm. The braking distance was extended. The contact had to pump the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the failure was related to NHTSA ID Number: 10054925000 (Service Brakes). The failure mileage was unknown.
I took my car in for routine oil change and was told that my car had needed the PTU transfer case unit fixed. They told me it was leaking and it would soon stop my car from operating. I looked into this and found the same recall was done for other vehicles but not mine! I am sure my vehicle was missed during this recall because the exact same is happening to my car!!!! This is NHTSA Campaign ID 14V002000. This recall was done on 01/06/2014. There are also other recalls I believe my vehicle is eligible for that my vehicle was not recalled. This process should be a priority to get correct and it is embarrassing I am having to go through this. I hope someone is able to remedy this as I believe this is a manufacturer defect, that I deserve to have compensated for.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the pedal became "spongy" and made an abnormal sound. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where the mechanic related the failure to Technical Service Bulletin: 13N02 (Brake Booster). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 211,500.
Brake pedal was slow to engage, had to push almost to the floor board. Car only has 60,000 miles. Repair shop stated it needed a new master cylinder. After replacing, still no good brake pressure due to inability to properly bleed the brake lines. After the 2nd master cylinder was installed, we were told the pressure regulator for the hydraulic brake lines was also bad. The repair shop stated through research, they have found that the Ford Edge has chronic problems with this issue. This is a costly repair, well over $2,000. Not to mention extremely dangerous to have almost zero brake pedal response.
My 2013 ford edge (SE, 3.5L) the brake suddenly went down with absolutely no warning or lights indicating a problem. Press very hard and almost down to the floor to stop my car. Very dangerous! I thus sent the car to ford dealership (Dean Seller Ford, Troy MI), was told the brake booster is down and have to fix it immediately because I cannot drive without the trustable brake. Finally cost me $904 out of door. I then found there is a recall (Bulletin 13N02) that recalls exactly the same issue of brake booster on ford edge cars from 2007 to 2015, it also extends the warranty of booster to 10 years and 150k miles. My 2013 ford edge only have 79000 miles why my car is not covered under that? This could be a very serious safety issue due to the problem of the brake!!
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the door ajar message was displayed. The contact stated that the front and rear driver’s side doors were unsecured. During the failure, the car alarm activated, and the interior dome light remained illuminated. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The local dealer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 88,000.
I took my vehicle to Ford for the brake booster that was issued by Ford. Nothing worked. My brakes would literally go soft and almost to the floor while stopping. It was extremely dangerous and scary. I saw a 2016 recall that replaced the ABS module but my car apparently wasn’t tagged to it. Finally had to foot the $1500 bill to have the ABS module replaced which seemed to have fixed the issue. Thousands have complained of this same issue so I’m not sure why a recent recall hadn’t been issued by Ford.
Due to the door latch issue and my interior light staying on I am unable to see at night when driving. It has caused issues with my battery and I have had to replace it a few times. Why isn't Ford recalling this?
Brake pedal unexpectedly goes to the floor and brakes fail to stop the vehicle. Problem is intermittent and unpredictable. After having master cylinder and brake booster replaced at owner's expense, brakes failed completely at 113k miles. Dealer now says the Hydraulic Control Unit must be replaced. This is a dangerous issue and should be investigated. We are extremely lucky that nobody was hurt when brakes failed.
Driver door closed sensor malfunctioning. Can’t get to go off so not sure if door is actually closed or not
To whom it may concern, I urgently report a critical safety issue with my 2013 Ford Edge that poses significant risks to driver and passenger safety. The door locking mechanism has malfunctioned, making it unresponsive to any switches inside or outside the vehicle. This prevents access or swift exit during emergencies, jeopardizing lives. Despite the door being securely closed, a false warning light indicates that the door is ajar. Opening the door from inside has become difficult due to a faulty interior handle, and the auto-locking system engages immediately upon manual opening, hindering quick exit. This issue has been reported on forums, and it appears that some dealerships are aware of the problem; however, the fix is reported to be costly. Such safety concerns demand immediate attention to avoid potential accidents and injuries. I request a thorough inspection of the malfunctioning component and urge for an urgent resolution. I also call for Ford's comprehensive investigation and prompt action to ensure driver safety. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. Please take immediate action to rectify this safety concern and safeguard lives on the road. Sincerely, [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
Brakes became soft and pedal then went down to the floor while driving. I was able to pump the brakes back up and I took it to the Ford dealer and they could not find an issue they said the brakes were fine.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and depressed to the floorboard. The contact stated that the brake pedal was making an abnormal hissing sound while depressed. There were no warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, who informed him the VIN was not under recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was not covered under Warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.
The driver side passenger "door ajar" sensor stays on constantly and is unsafe because we aren't sure if the door is truly open or not? We are scared to have passengers sit on that side of the vehicle for fear of the door flying open and causing injury by falling out or other injury because the sensor does not tell us accurately as to whether the door is truly closed all the way or not. It also drains the battery over time due to constantly being on. This problem has been going on for 2 years. We had it looked at by a mechanic. We were told they can replace the sensor, but it would likely go out again because this is a manufacturer defect, and a well known problem for Ford Edges as well as other Ford models, but they refuse to issue a recall. This is EXTREMELY UNSAFE. The other safety concern I have is the need for a recall on our VIN SPECIFIC rear view camera. The screen went blank and then, when it came back on, the image is flipped upside down and has vertical lines across the screen making it extremely difficult to see. This is a crucial component to safety. This happened approximately 1 year ago. This is EXTREMELY UNSAFE as we can back over and KILL someone if we don't go super slow and intensely observe the camera while in reverse. This is even more dangerous in poorly lit places. There were no warnings or sensors indicating a problem with the camera. It just went blank and then PERMANENTLY flipped the image upside down.
BRAKE PEDAL GO TO THE FLOOR BAD ABS ASSEMBLY
Brake pedal sinked all the way down to the floor
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving 50 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed, and there was an abnormal grinding sound coming from the vehicle, and the vehicle failed to respond. The brake failure and general warning lights were illuminated. The contact stated that the brakes eventually responded. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed the vehicle; however, the independent mechanic refused to repair the vehicle. The independent mechanic informed the contact the failure should be covered under recall. The independent mechanic stated that he would be liable if the brakes failed again, and the contact was involved in a crash. The vehicle was then taken to a dealer, where it was diagnosed with brake booster failure. The vehicle received repair for a bent push rod, motor craft, motor, brake fluid, and the upper intake was replaced. After the repair, the failure recurred two more times, and the vehicle was repaired two more times. The vehicle was pending further repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 164,301.
The contact called on behalf of a customer who owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who noticed that there was an abnormal hissing noise detected when the brake pedal was depressed. While driving, the vehicle was hesitating. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The mechanic informed the consumer that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The local dealer was contacted but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 105,607.
Total brake failure, no warning lights, no messages. No issues the day before, then total brake failure the next day. Fluid levels were within margin and no leaks. We replaced the master cylinder, this did not fix the problem. Then we replaced the ABS pump module and it helped but the mechanic shop could not bleed the brake system correctly so we took it to a Ford Dealership and they were able to bleed the brake system correctly and now we have brakes. We have a total of $2300.00 into this fix which was excessive. No recalls for brakes issues for this vehicle from Ford.
The brake pedal goes to the floor before the brakes engage even a little bit. Almost rear-ended another vehicle due to the brake failure. Took it to the repair shop 3 times for repair. They bled the brakes several times which helped for a day and the problem returned each time. This has the potential to cause a severe accident if it is not resolved. Internet articles I've read and my personal experience indicate that replacing the master cylinder, brake booster or bleeding the brakes does not solve the problem. What is my option for a next step?
In July 2022, brakes gave out twice, pedal going all the way to the floor; hard to stop. Then it mysteriously went away. Happened again in November 2022. Found out Ford issued an extended warranty (13N02) on a faulty brake booster. Took it to Galpin Ford. They replaced the booster under this warranty. Yesterday, 12/12/22, we had a bit of snow, wife drove the car, almost crashed as brake failure yet again! Took it back to Galping Ford who says 'they cannot find anything wrong'. That's BS! This Edge has less than 70,000 miles and is driven by a middle age female (not being aggressively driven). We bought this vehicle used from Galpin Ford and they DID NOT inform us of this problem. Now we have a dangerous car to drive; I can't sell it or I'm liable! There is NO recourse for us owners and we are paying the price (both financially and with our lives) because NHSTA has failed to issue a recall. Get these cars fixed or off the road! Owners should not have to bear this financial burden.
When braking the brakes go all the way down to the floor and I do not stop immediately. I was driving home from work Fri 12/9 after dark and had to swerve to keep from hitting an animal in the road because my brakes did not brake as I expected. If was very unnerving.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while shifting to park(P), the message “Shift to Park” was displayed. The contact had to park and turn off and restart the vehicle and press the button on the gear shifter several times before the message would cease to appear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the gear shifter had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
9/15/2022 paid $875.90 for brake booster, two weeks later, ABS module going out, according to Moyer Ford, as of 12/01/2022, I’ve called Ford Complaint and they fail to add my vin number, says only nhtsa can do that. As of today, 12/01/2022, Moyer ford is telling me abs modules are on back order with no ETA. Ford knows this is major brake issue but not addressing it! Now when abs part does come in, that’s another $800 out of my pocket, total of $1700 that Ford is ignoring and don’t even have the parts to fix! Major concern!
including hard or stiff power brakes that are difficult to press down and increased stopping distance. This may be due to a failing vacuum pump or hydraulic pressure pump. You may also find that your brake pedal is positioned higher than usual. As a result, you may have to lift your foot higher to press on the brake pedal, apply more force, or
My issue is that there is a door ajar alarm that I brought my vehicle into the dealer to fix. With this alarm you are unable to lock your doors while inside the vehicle. Someone tried to steal our vehicle from us with us inside, just walked up and opened the door. The attempt was unsuccessful and we got away but it had me thinking that if we had small children in our vehicle, they could easily open the door and fall out. The dealer said this is a known issue and it would cost over $500 to fix but recommended NOT fixing it because it would just happen again, it's a bad part/design they said. I did call Ford Motor Company and they advised me to report this to you so I'm reporting this before someone gets killed from this known issue.
