NHTSA Owner Complaint Log
This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2013 Ford Edge. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 40 MPH, the brake pedal was hard to depress causing an increased stopping time. The contact stated no warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or independent mechanic for diagnoses or repairs. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The dealer advised the contact to call the manufacturer for assistance. The contact stated he had received a letter from the manufacturer several years ago extending the warranty for the brake booster. The contact stated that the warranty was 10/years or 150,000 miles from the date of being put in service. The contact stated that the vehicle was beyond 10 years by less than 30 days and inquired of the manufacturer to extend the warranty and cover the repairs. The contact stated that he called the manufacturer however, the call was transferred to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 133,000.
Brake pedal goes to floor and gives feeling it won't stop. Have taken car to Ford dealership 3 times and they replaced master cylinder, brake booster. It would only last a couple weeks then brake to floor again. Took it to another mechanic who had it for 2 weeks. He said he tried everything and can't fix it. The parking brake light won't go off along with the traction light and abs light. This Ford model is a money pit. Plastic pieces for wiper wash in hood disintegrated, door ajar is a constant frustration, and blue Ford emblem faded to ugly. The brake problem has been going on for 4 months now.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact then stood on the brake pedal. The brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard and the vehicle stopped abruptly. There was no warning light illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring increasingly while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake booster had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under an extended warranty due to the mileage. The failure mileage was approximately 177,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while attempting to start the vehicle, the contact became aware that the rearview camera displayed a blank screen or an upside-down image. An independent mechanic was contacted. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 25V270000 (BACK OVER PREVENTION); however, the VIN or the model year was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 193,000.
The sunroof rails guides broke and its not being hold by the rail guides. The broken pieces are just floating free. Feels like if i take highway the paranomic glass will swing open and cause an accident. Im really concern for my family or any passanger. I believe its a default from ford for not being well engeneeeed.
The vehicle is not going into second gear. A pull onto a 40 mph road means a quick start but then the vehicle won't shift gears so needs to be pulled over quickly to not be in the way of coming traffic. It was inspected by family automatician but wrench light had turned off and stopped problem. Then happened again the next morning followed by wrench light later in the day. Not inspected, yet.
The adaptive cruise won’t work, traction control, abs brake warning lights stay on. Ford won’t assist or assume in the responsibility.
Hard brake pedal on trying to stop. Takes a lot of pressure on brake pedal to stop.
My 2013 ford edge has the sunroof rails broken . i think because they are made out of plastic. So the only thing holding the front of the glass is some wires to prevent it from the glass from catching air and catching air borne which will shatter the glass. Im really scare to take the freeway.
Oct 2021 spongy brakes all the way to the floor. Master cylinder replaced. February 2022 happened again despite no warning or indication. Now the HCU needs to be replaced.
After start of vehicle and engaging vehicle by shifting to drive and pressing the gas paddle, the vehicle would not move. While pressing the gas peddle again, vehicle revs but, does not drive or move, rocks but stays in place. Makes noises underneath car. I was at a red light when this happened and also left in the middle of the road while driving.
Stability control system keeps coming on
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH, there was a smell of burned rubber, and upon inspection, the contact noticed fire coming from the rear windshield wiper. The contact pulled over and fire marshals extinguished the fire. A police report was not taken and no one was injured. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer and was awaiting diagnosis. The manufacturer was informed of failure and told the contact to call NHTSA. The failure mileage was 188,013.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that the brake pressure would fail causing the contact to have to excessively depress the brake pedal before the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle's timing before coming to a complete stop had also increased. The failure occurred intermittently when on an incline, however, the occurrence had increased. The dealer stated the failure related to a service bulletin regarding the replacement of the brake booster failed however the vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure however confirmed that the VIN was not included in the service bulletin. The failure mileage was 84,900.
The contact's daughter owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while his daughter was at a complete stop, the brake pedal was depressed but felt spongy and failed to respond. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact’s daughter continued to depress the brake pedal until the brakes responded. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the whistling sound inside the cab was caused by the vacuum booster and the master cylinder failure. The vehicle was then taken to the dealer who advised that the vacuum booster would be replaced under an unknown recall; however, the master cylinder replacement would be an out-of-pocket expense. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 MPH and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the brake pedal went to the floorboard which resulted in no brake functionality. The contact was able to pull into his driveway and stop the vehicle. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer who informed the contact that the HCU valve needed to be replaced however, the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,700.
Brake booster went out twice and had to be replaced both times ( Jan 2022 and Jan 2023). Now I have HCU failure and lost braking. ( Dec. 2024). I also had a drive Shaft failure for inspection ( Oct. 2024). My car has 60,000 miles on it. I contacted Ford Corporation and my Ford dealership and my Vin is not part of the recalls for any of these issues. However my model year and manufacturer location were part of a recall for all three of these systems. My car has been serviced by a Ford authorized dealer each time. My braking system continues to be unreliable and scary to drive.
The Brakes on my 2013 Ford Edge failed resulting in an accident with my 17 year old son on 1-11-22. The pedal was pressed all the way down, and only the emergency break stopped the vehicle. When pressing it brake, it was as if there were no brakes whatsoever. We had a total brake job done on 8-6-2021. on 9-19-21 the car would hardly come to a complete stop, same issue that my son encountered. The pedal would go all the way down and the pedal would hiss during this time. We had the brake booster replaced. So in a span of 1 month and an half we spent $1,600.25 only for the issue to occur again to put my sons life and others at Risk. I have been doing some research and this is a common issue with this particular vehicle. Ford did do an partial recall of this apparently, but our vehicle was not part of this. There are many instances of the Ford Edge having this exact same problem that Ford does not seem to want to address. This car is unsafe. We will be selling this back to the dealership as we are not comfortable to drive it. There are many parts to the brake system that can cause this from the Power Booster, the ABS injector and the Master Brake Cylinder. There are many instances where this is a very intermittent problem. The issue occurs, and then the mechanics can't find anything wrong. there are hundreds of testimonies online for this vehicle and the issues that it has.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal fuel odor detected. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed with a cracked fuel tank. The fuel tank was replaced. Prior to the failure, the canister purge valve was replaced twice. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 71,974.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 MPH and slowing for a traffic signal, she heard a hissing sound coming under the driver's side floorboard nearby the steering column. The contact stated that she continued to depress the brake pedal to stop the vehicle; however, the brake pedal went down to the floorboard with an abnormal squealing sound. Additionally, the contact stated that the engine stalled. The contact stated that the low oil pressure warning light was illuminated. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 120,500.
Sunroof will not close. Nothing is obstructing its ability to close. After taking it on to the dealership, they informed me 7 out of 10 Edges have this problem. This is not something I as the consumer has done.
Rear backup camera failure. Sometimes it is upside down, sometimes it is right side up and sometimes it is blank and sometimes show only black screen with verticals lines.
Brakes started with a hissing noise, now they are super hard to push, I have to push them to the floor to get my car to stop. I'm scared to even drive my car as it takes a lot to get it to brake and god forbid if someone or thing jumps out in front of me I won't be able to stop quickly. Was told its the brake booster and its a known issue with the edge, so I dont understand why they haven't had a recall! I would have never bought this vehicle if I would have known i wouldn't be able to safely brake!
When driving at normal speed (30MPH) break pedal is very soft and goes to floor before stopping the car. Same problem occurred in August 2021. Hampton Ford dealer replaced the booster system which solved the problem temporarily. Problem returned on 12/27/21. Very dangerous. The ABS light has not come on. Dealer has no appointments until 1/18/22.
Traction control. Stabiltrak, and ABS system all randomly failed at 69,000 miles. They were intermittently going in and out for two days now come on every time. The car does not even have 100,000 miles. I have replaced the transmission and have countless electrical issues. The blend door actuators are all faulty. Known common issue that will cost a thousand to fix. Master brake cylinder has been replaced and still having faulty petal issues that is no longer covered. The panoramic roof does not work and it is a known issue almost every edge has. And now sever safety issues with the ABS system and traction control. There is no excuse for this poor manufacturing and no recalls to fix them. There were absolutely zero warning signs or check engine lights that came on prior to any of these systems happening. The transmission never through a code at all until after it locked up. The ABS system went out while driving down the road on a rainy day causing me to loose control and luckily I was able to get it into the ditch instead of into oncoming traffic. It put my life and my friends lives in danger. Ford should be sued for this and made to recall every single edge or other vehicle with these components. I have no fixed the issue yet because I wanted to submit this issue to the NHTSA and have it available to be inspected if they wanted. This vehicle is extremely unsafe and has had issues non stop. The transmission went out also while driving on the highway and just locked up causing me to almost get hit from the rear. And the replacement transmission is already having issues again with less than 15,000 miles on it. This
While travelling at around 50 MPH, I had to quickly apply the brake pedal due to oncoming stopped traffic. The brake pedal went to the floor and vehicle would not slow down. I continuously pumped the pedal and had to abruptly switch lanes to avoid rear-end collision with the car in front of me. Then after abruptly changing lanes a truck almost hit me. I pumped the brakes until the vehicle slowly stopped. This is not the first time it has happened, and I doubt it will be the last. This problem seems to occur when I have to suddenly come to a stop.
In June 2021 my brake pedal was going to the floor. There was no brake fluid leaking. I took it for diagnostics and was informed (1) the master cylinder needed to be replaced. While it was in the shop they said they had to replace the (2) master cylinder again because the one they received was defective. (3)Then in December after driving approx 2500 mi the pedal went to the floor again. I drove the vehicle (scared out of my mind) 15 miles back to Goodyear. I parked in their open lot instead of pulling up to the front because I was afraid I'd run into the parking curb. I got a call from Goodyear that they were unable to duplicate the problem! It was constant when I was driving to their shop and when I parked it. If they had come out and driven it when I got there they would have definitely confirmed there was NO brake pedal! I worry every time I drive my car and I'm afraid to carry any passengers.
Continue to experience the soft brake pedal / loss of brakes / pedal to the floor without warning. Warning Collision lights continue to flash off and on. Has been checked by Ford several times and none can figure out the issue.
I was told once that body control module wàs bad then I call to get it replaced and they said it wasn't bad. Windshield wipers go when they want then sometimes they won't work at all. Windows will roll down when rolling up or roll up when rolling down. Radio has been delayed. Sometimes definitely not eco boost. Pushes slower than my grandma's 1999 Buick. Brake boost was replaced in July ànd now again I have no breaks whatsoever I have to drive with the emergency brake
Passenger side door latch will not engage
While turning the vehicle to the left at slow speed the right ball joint failed (passenger side) including axel damage. The front passenger wheel turned freely to the right with the driver side wheel remaining straight. A sensation of front end falling apart was felt from the driver's seat. There were no symptoms of suspension failure prior to this event. No vibration at speed, no clunking, no unusual tire wear or pulling left or right issues. The car has 119542 miles at the time of failure. The vehicle was purchased used just prior to this at a Honda Dealer with a extended warranty purchased at time of sale. Vehicle was serviced just prior to this failure with a water pump replaced under extended warranty.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while reversing out of the driveway, the brake pedal was depressed but went to the floorboard and hesitated to respond, causing a 10-feet stopping distance delay. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that the failure had been reoccurring while driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact they could not repair the vehicle under Customer Satisfaction Program: 13N02 for the brake booster warranty extension because the VIN was not included. The vehicle was taken to Barbee's Freeway Ford (4471 E Evans Ave, Denver, CO 80222) who confirmed the information from the first dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.
Driving along with 115,000 miles experienced excessive brake pedal travel when trying to stop. Scared the crap out of me. Braking did work at the bottom of the pedal as it was almost at the floor. Did some online research and many at experiencing this issue. It is sticky valves in the HCU. A condition that has caused recalls in other ford vehicles. I paid $1,600 to the ford dealer to replace the HCU. This needs a recall. It will kill someone
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal to stop the vehicle, the pedal extended to the floor and the braking distance was extended. Additionally, the brake pedal felt spongy when pressed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who was unable to duplicate the failure. The mechanic indicated that a hissing sound was present while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was not repaired. The local dealer and manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.
The brake booster failed, just as is outlined in Ford's Customer Satisfaction Program #13N02, NHTSA #10054925. Ford claims my vehicle was built outside of the dates covered in the CSP and therefore, does not qualify for the warranty extension of the CSP. The booster failure I experienced is identical to that described in the CSP, so it seems obvious that there are more vehicles affected than Ford claims.
Well driving under normal operating conditions at the posted speed limit of 45 mph I was cut off and apply the brakes rapidly to avoid a collision, at that moment the brake pedal lost its firmness and depressed slowly to the floor with limited breaking ability. After the incident I pulled to the shoulder and noticed that the brake pedal continue to sink to the floor with little to no resistance even after placing in park, shutting down and restarting the vehicle. This condition still persists after break bleeding and checking the entire brake system, my safety was in jeopardy due to the fact that I had limited braking ability and the pedal continue to sink to the floor with no resistance. This has not been evaluated by a dealership or independent mechanic as of this writing and the problem has not been reproduced also there’s been no reports to my insurance, police, the manufacture or any other parties and there were no warning lights, diagnostic trouble codes, or any other Indication as to there being a faulty system or failed ABS pump, master cylinder or hydroboost
The wrench light comes on sporadically causing decreased speeds which entails causes accidents.
i went to stop and the vehile did not stop but continued to roll. I tried stopping a second time the vehile break pedal went to the group. I then had the car towed in to the shop.
my car would not stop when i tried to stop. I tried stopping a second time and the brake pedal went to the floor. i have another replaced the brake booster 2 years ago and now they are saying it is the hcu unit. my car was under recall for booster but mine was not covered as it was made in nov i understand the recall was for 2013 made before May. I had the same problem.
The brake booster apparently is an issue with Ford Edge vehicles. Mine is a 2013 Ford Edge SE and I can barely stop my vehicle. I have to slam in the brakes really hard to get it to stop safely. The other issue since I’ve bought the vehicle is that when I accelerate, I smell engine fumes inside the cabin. Last, when the temperature drops suddenly, or if it’s really hot outside, my “Door is open” alarm stays on for the driver side door. Doesn’t matter how hard you close it.
Bakes Booster and Cylinder has to be replaced. When hitting brake pedal doesn't stop car immediatedly and goes very low. Have to step on brake several times for car to start. There seems to be a lot of complaints against 2013 Ford Edge for brake problems.
The brake booster has failed now for the 3rd time in 12 months. Brakes still work but pedal goes almost to floor. Brake booster previously replaced, at our expense, by local Ford dealership in January 2021. Three months later brake booster failed again. Took back to dealership and they found no fault. In October brake booster failed again and has not regained proper function to date. Any questions answered below refer to the most recent malfunction.
While turning into a driveway and applying the brake pedal, the pedal traveled to the floorboard, felt spongey and made a hissing sound. The vehicle is currently at the mechanics and was informed that it was not the master cylinder and is now looking to replace the brake booster. No service lights came on; there was no warning at all.
When my check engine light came on I took my 2013 Ford Edge to my regular mechanic. I was having problems with the brakes causing the car to stall when stopped with my foot on the brake. It was also difficult to stop since the brake pedal would not engage & when it did it went to the floor. It was the brake booster which I paid $966 to have repaired. I later learned that this was under a Ford recall 13N02 for 2010-2013 Edge however my vehicle was not covered because apparently it wasn't built in the Oakville plant!! I feel this should be covered regardless of where my vehicle was built since the issue involves the exact problem described in Ford's "customer satisfaction program 13N02"
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving 30 MPH, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle. The vehicle began to roll forward and veered off the road. In a panic, the contact exited the vehicle from the driver's side door. She stated that the driver’s side rear tire rolled over her right leg however, she suffered no injuries. A police report was not filed. The contact called a relative to assist her and the relative was able to restart the vehicle and drove to an independent mechanic. The independent mechanic diagnosed the vehicle with a defective timing chain which resulted in engine failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and requested pictures of the engine to start an investigation. The vehicle had yet to be repaired. The failure mileage was 165,000
The brake pedal is going all the way to floor and struggles to stop the car. With no brakes could cause a major accident. Don't trust driving the car. Has not yet been taken to mechanic or dealer. Research recalls and issues and sounds like this has been a major safety issue that Ford Motor Co. has tried to avoid with some Edges built in that year. Again, no one has inspected the vehicle yet but has ALL symptoms of the posted recall. There was no warning lights.
The contact owns a 2013 Ford Edge. The contact stated while driving at 5 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed and made an abnormal hissing sound, and felt soft. The contact also stated the brake pedal hesitated to respond, causing a 5-10 feet stopping distance delay. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake booster needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that the vehicle could not be repaired under an unknown customer satisfaction program due to the manufacture on date. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 105,000.
Brake pedal intermittently goes to the floor when attempting to stop. The brake booster was replaced by dealership under wgat they called a recall but received vehicle back with the same issue. Dealership is now stating Hydraulic Control Unit is the issue noting repair cost 1,700.
Brake failure of the power brake booster, I was coming to stop and the brake pedal went to the floor and the vehicle went through a busy intersection narrowly missing another vehicle. I am the original owner of the vehicle. I contacted Ford customer care and explained to them what had happened,I was told Ford is not doing anything for customers who experienced this failure at this time.
I had to make an emergency stop and my brake pedal went down to the floor. I am being told that the ABS Module and Hydraulic Control Unit need to be replaced at a cost of $2,550.
