FORD ESCAPE HYBRID 2009 [XXX] RECALL NUMBER 14S05 FORD WON'T FIX THE DEFECT. IT WILL CAUSE CRASH ON HIGHWAY. IT TOOK IT TO FORD DEALER IN FREMONT, CA. THE DEALER REFUSE TO FIX IT. EVERYDAY I USE, I WORRY IT WILL CRASH BECAUSE IT ALMOST CRASH COUPLE TIMES IN THE LAST COUPLE YEARS, UNTIL RECENTLY I FOUND OUT THE RECALL. POWER STEERING JUST STOPPED WORKING. THIS MAKE IT VERY HARD TO STEER. MUCH HARDER THAN CARS THAT DIDN'T HAVE POWER STEERING IN THE OLDER DAYS. POWER STEERING STOPPED AS IT WAS BEING DRIVEN TO THE GARAGE.
MY VEHICLE HAS ERRATIC STEERING ISSUES. THE ELECTRIC STEERING CAUSED MY VEHICLE TO LITERALLY DRIVE RIGHT OFF THE ROAD INTO A TREE. THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKES BACK AND FORTH WHILE SITTING STILL AND CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO DRIFT ALL OVER THE ROAD AT ANY GIVEN TIME WITHOUT WARNING. IT IS A KNOWN ISSUE, BUT FORD IS MAKING ME PAY TO FIX THE VEHICLE BY REPLACING THE ENTIRE STEERING COLUMN OF THE VEHICLE TO INCLUDE ELECTRONICS. EVEN THE FORD SERVICE MANAGER SAYS IN ALL HIS YEARS HE HAS NEVER SEEN AN ENTIRE COLUMN FAIL. HOWEVER, AFTER A QUICK GOOGLE SEARCH, THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE FOR FORD AND THEY ARE WELL AWARE OF THE PROBLEM. THIS ISSUE WILL CAUSE SOMEONE TO DIE. IT HAS ALREADY CAUSED ME TO GET IN AN ACCIDENT BY MAKING THE STEERING RANDOMLY JERK CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE OFF THE ROAD.
INITIALLY THE "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" WARNING WOULD POP UP ON MY DASH AND GO AWAY, THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF A COUPLE WEEKS BEFORE IT STOPPED SHOWING UP AND I DIDN'T NOTICE ANY PROBLEMS. ABOUT A MONTH LATER I NOTICED EXTREME SHAKING OF MY STEERING WHEEL, BOTH WHILE IN MOTION AND IN PARK WITH THE VEHICLE STILL RUNNING. AFTER A FEW WEEKS OF THE STEERING WHEEL SHAKING, ONE EVENING THE "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" WARNING CAME ON AND STAYED ON. THE FOLLOWING MORNING WHEN I STARTED MY CAR THE LIGHT WAS STILL ON AND THERE WAS NO POWER STEERING.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 45 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL LOST POWER. AS THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO TURN THE VEHICLE, IT CRASHED INTO A LIGHT POLE. THE POWER ASSIST INDICATOR ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING ASSIST TORQUE SENSOR FAILED AND THE STEERING COLUMN NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 83,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH, THE STEERING WHEEL BECAME INOPERABLE WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,100.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 60 MPH THE VEHICLE LOST STEERING POWER WITHOUT WARNING. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO STATED THAT THERE WAS A RECALL ON THE FAILURE; HOWEVER, THE DEALER STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE DEALER DIAGNOSED AND REPLACED THE STEERING TORQUE SENSOR IN THE STEERING COLUMN. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. WHILE DRIVING UNKNOWN SPEEDS, THE BATTERY INDICATOR ILLUMINATED AND THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER GAUGES FLICKERED ON AND OFF. ALSO, THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILED AND THE CONTACT WAS UNABLE TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. IN ADDITION, THE RADIO AND HEATER WERE STUCK IN THE ON POSITION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL DEALER (BILL MARSH FORD, 408 W MILE RD NW, KALKASKA, MI 49646) WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE WRONG BATTERY WAS INSTALLED IN THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE ISSUE AND OPENED CASE NUMBER: CAS- 13337258. THE CONTACT WAS REFERRED TO NHTSA. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN.
STEERING WHEEL LOCKS WHILE IN MOTION WITH A MESSAGE OF POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT , VERY POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS, ON A CITY STREET
A QUICK ALARM SOUNDED THEN A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING WHILE DRIVING ON A QUIET ROAD, THEN POWER STEERING QUICKLY CAME BACK...HAPPENED TWICE MORE IN A 4 MILE STRETCH. THE POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT WARNING CAME ON THE SCREEN. AFTER TURNING OFF ENGINE AND STARTING AGAIN IN DRIVE, THE POWER STEERING NEVER WORKED AND MADE THE AUTOMOBILE IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. WHEN RESEARCHED, IT WAS NOTED THAT THIS IS AN ISSUE WITH MANY MANY FORD ESCAPES (2009 MODELS AND MORE, RECALL #14S05) YET I DID NOT RECEIVE A NOTICE AND MY LOCAL DEALER JUST TOLD ME THAT OUR PARTICULAR AUTO WAS NOT RECALLED WHEN MATCHED WITH OUR VIN.
THIS IS AN ADDENDUM TO A PREVIOUS COMPLAINT. RECALL ON STEERING WAS PERFORMED BY DEALER IN 8/2014 BY SIMPLY RESETTING COMPUTER, NOT REPLACING STEERING COLUMN OR IT'S COMPONENTS SO FAILURE WAS REALLY NOT ADDRESSED PROPERLY. NOW FORD REFUSES TO DO THE REPAIR AT THEIR COST AS THEY STATED THAT THE RECALL WAS COMPLETE. CAR HAS COMPLETE POWER STEERING FAILURE WITH POWER STEERING ASSIST FAULT" ON THE SCREEN. CAR IS VERY UNSAFE TO OPERATE.
THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WHILE I WAS DRIVING. LUCKILY, I WAS DRIVING STRAIGHT AND NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF A TURN. THE POWER STEERING WILL RESET SOMETIMES WHEN I TURN THE CAR ON AND OFF. IF THE POWER STEERING IS WORKING WHEN I FIRST GET IN THE CAR IT WILL GUARANTEED FAIL WITHIN 20-30 MINUTES OF DRIVING. I'VE DONE RESEARCH AND FOUND THERE ARE MULTIPLE POWER STEERING RECALLS AND CLASS-ACTION LAWSUITS AGAINST FORD FOR THESE ISSUES AND EXPECT THEM TO APPLY THIS RECALL TO MY VEHICLE. BEFORE THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL WOULD SHAKE AT ANY SPEED ABOVE 65 MPH AND IT CONTINUES TO DO SO.
I PURCHASED THIS CAR IN FEBRUARY 2017 AND ONE WEEK LATER, I WAS PULLING INTO A PARKING SPOT AND THE POWER STEERING FAILURE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE POWER STEERING CEASED TO WORK. THE CAR HAD 116,000 MILES ON IT. I COULDN'T DRIVE THE CAR AND MY HUSBAND HAD TO COME AND DRIVE THE CAR HOME. AFTER LOOKING ON LINE, WE DISCOVERED THE POWER STEERING RECALL 14S05 THAT EXISTED. AFTER MORE RESEARCH WE FOUND THIS CAR DID HAVE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE IN 2014 SO FORD SAYS IT HAS SATISFIED THAT RECALL AND WILL NOT FIX THIS. WE HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THE TORQUE SENSOR REPLACED. SINCE THE SOFTWARE UPDATE ONLY WARNS OF THE PROBLEM EXISTING AND DOESN'T FIX THE FAULTY PART(S), I THINK IT IS ABSOLUTELY UNCONSCIONABLE FOR THE NHTSA TO ALLOW FORD TO SAY THEY SATISFIED THE RECALL WITHOUT FIXING THE FAULTY PART(S). THIS MAKES CONSUMERS THINK THE NHTSA REALLY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT OUR SAFETY. THE ONLY WAY FOR THE NHTSA TO FIX THIS IS TO STRONGLY ENCOURAGE OR DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO ISSUE ANOTHER RECALL TO ACTUALLY FIX THIS INJUSTICE. FORD, WE AS MANY OTHERS, HAVE PURCHASED NUMEROUS FORDS TO BUY AMERICAN AND TRUSTED YOU WOULD DO WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS!! THIS MAKES ALL OF US NOT WANT TO BUY FORD ANY MORE. DO THE RIGHT THING AND ISSUE ANOTHER RECALL, OR OPEN THE PREVIOUS RECALL TO FIX OUR CARS OR REIMBURSE US FOR THE MONEY WE HAD TO SPEND TO FIX THE FAULTY PARTS YOU PUT IN OUR CARS!!!!
LOST ALL POWER STEERING ON INTERSTATE AT HIGH RATE OF SPEED.
POWER STEERING WENT OUT.
THE STEERING WHEEL BINDS UPON ENGINE START. WHEN I TURN IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON IT BINDS AND GOES INTO MANUAL MODE AND IT'S HARD TO STEER. IF I TURN IT OFF AND TURN IT BACK ON, HALF THE TIME IT FIXES ITSELF AND HALF THE TIME IT DOESN'T. IT MAKES IT REALLY UNSAFE TO DRIVE BECAUSE THE WHEEL IS REALLY HARD TO TURN. I HAVE TROUBLE STEERING AND CANNOT CONTROL THE VEHICLE THE WAY I NEED TO. WE CONTACTED FORD TO SEE IF THERE WAS A RECALL BUT WE WERE TOLD THERE WASN'T. I BELIEVE THERE SHOULD BE A RECALL FOR THIS BECAUSE IT IS DANGEROUS AND NOT SAFE TO DRIVE.
IT WAS A HEAVY RAINY NIGHT WHEN WINDSHIELD WIPERS STARTED ACTING UP WITH THEIR RHYTHM MAKING IT HARD TO SEE THROUGH A SLIGHTLY BLURRED WINDSHIELD THEN WINDSHIELD & SUNROOF STARTS LEAKING WATER ALL OVER ME,INSIDE THE FRONT LIGHT SWITCH,DOWN INTO FLOOR BOARDS PLUS ALL IN THE SEATS !! IF THAT WASN'T ENOUGH I WAS SLOWING DOWN TO GO AROUND A FEW CURVES WHEN BRAKES ACTED LIKE THEY DIDN'T WANT ME TO STOP SCARY. KEY IS HARD & STICKY FEELING TO TURN IN IGNITION CYLINDER THEREFORE MAKING THE IGNITION SWITCH NOT BEING ABLE TO CATCH ANY VOLTAGE AT ALL TO START THE ENGINE..AFTER A MILLION TRIES IT'LL FINALLY START.. IT STILL LEAKS,VERY HARD TO START & REPLACING BRAKES AGAIN...
MY FORD'S VIN# [XXX]. MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE THE POWER STEERING FAILED ON MY WAY TO WORK. I STOPPED AT A LIGHT AND THE POWER STEERING FAILED. IT SEEMS TO FAIL AFTER DRIVING A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MILES. THE STEERING WHEEL BECOMES HARD TO TURN AND YOU NEED TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND BACK ON TO RESUME POWER STEERING. I CALLED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE AND THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING FOR ME. WHEN I ACCELERATE MY WHEEL FEELS LIKE IT'S SLIPPING AND GRINDING AND WHEN I APPLY THE BRAKES HARD THEY SEEM TO NOT WANT TO STOP KEEPING MY ABS ON I FEEL THE GRINDING AND BRAKE ISSUE COMING FROM THE FRONT WHEEL. WHEN I STEP ON THE GAS THE FRONT WHEEL HOPS AND DOESN'T GET TRACTION WANTS TO CONSTANTLY SLIP AND WHEN I STOP IN SNOW THE BRAKES LOCK UP IN FRONT AND ABS STAYS ON FOR A BIT MIGHT BE GEAR DRIVE OR BEARING IT'S GETTING BAD. THIS HAPPENS WHEN I HAVE TO GIVE A LOT OF GAS TO GO AND THE ABS WHEN I NEED TO REALLY STOP. THIS STARTED A COUPLE MONTHS AFTER I FINANCED IT THROUGH GENTHE CHEVROLET BUT I WORK MANY HOURS AND IT HAS TO BE FIXED BEFORE I END UP STRANDED OR IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I FIRST TEST DROVE IT IT WAS ACTING UP I TOLD THE SALESMAN DAVE TESKA HE TOLD ME IT WAS FIXED BUT HE MUST OF DOPED IT LIKE THE INTERIOR IT LOOKED NEW WHEN I BOUGHT IT NOW IT HAS STAIN SPOTS AND LOOKS DIRTY I FOUND OUT IT WAS A FORD FABRIC PROBLEM AND THEY CAN'T DO ANYTHING. I'LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER VEHICLE AGAIN FROM GENTHE.

ONCE RESTARTED, THE VEHICLE RETURNED TO NORMAL. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AT 800-678-7986 AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE NEEDED TO BE TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 100,000.

THE STEERING WHEEL ON OUR 2009 FORD ESCAPE STARTED SHAKING CONSTANTLY AND THERE'S A WARNING SHOWING "POWER STEERING ASSIST FAILURE." WE TOOK IT TO OUR LOCAL FORD DEALER. THEY DETERMINED IT WAS AN ISSUE COVERED UNDER A RECALL AND WE SCHEDULED A SERVICE APPOINTMENT FOR REPAIR. WHEN WE TOOK IT IN FOR THE APPOINTMENT, THEY THEN TOLD US IT WASN'T A RECALL AND WE WOULD HAVE TO PAY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. WE DIDN'T CONTINUE WITH THE REPAIR AT THAT TIME. WE RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM AND FOUND THERE WAS A RECALL ISSUED ON 05/29/14, NHTSA CAMPAIGN #14V284000, FORD RECALL #14S05. WE OWNED THE VEHICLE AT THAT TIME OF THE RECALL AND WERE NEVER NOTIFIED. I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE REGARDING THE ISSUE, BUT THE ONLY RESOLUTION THEY OFFERED WAS THAT WE WOULD HAVE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE WITH OUR FORD DEALER, WHICH WON'T FIX THE PROBLEM UNDER RECALL. WE TOOK THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP AND ASKED THEM TO CONDUCT A DIAGNOSTIC CHECK ON IT WITHOUT TELLING THEM THE BACKGROUND. THEY PERFORMED THE CHECK AND DETERMINED IT WAS THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM AND RECALL WE WERE ALREADY AWARE OF. THEY PROVIDED US WITH THE RECALL DOCUMENTATION AND ADVISED US TO GO TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND THEY SHOULD REPAIR THE PROBLEM DUE TO THE PREVIOUS RECALL. COULD SOMEONE PLEASE PROVIDE US ASSISTANCE OR ADVICE IN GETTING OUR VEHICLE REPAIRED UNDER THIS RECALL? WE'RE FEARFUL OF DRIVING THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE POTENTIAL LOSS OF STEERING LOSS AND DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW FORD IS REFUSING TO REPAIR A CLEARLY OBVIOUS RECALL ISSUE. THANK YOU. *TR

EVENTUALLY, THE POWER STEERING MALFUNCTIONED AND MADE THE STEERING WHEEL VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN IN EITHER DIRECTION. THE FAILURE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER AND MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 205,500. *TT THE CONSUMER STATED THE TORQUE SENSOR WAS REPLACED BUT DID NOT RESOLVE THE ISSUE. THE STEERING BOX WAS REPLACED, RESOLVING THE ISSUE. *TR
THERE HAS BEEN MULTIPLE ISSUES WITH THIS FORD ESCAPE XLT. THE ABS LIGHT CONTINUES TO COME ON. THE WHEEL OF THE CAR LOCKS WHEN YOU TRY TOO TURN WHEN DRIVING WHEEL. IT IS VERY DANGEROUS. THE SENSORS EVEN THOUGH WE REPLACED THEM KEEP BLOWING WHICH CAUSING THE TRUCK TO DECLINE IN SPEED WHILE DRIVING IN TRAFFIC. WE HAD TO TURN IT ONTO TO THE GRASS TO AVOID ACCIDENTS. CONSTANT ENGINE ISSUES AFTER WE HAD IT FIXED MULTIPLE TIMES. WE ARE IN A FINANCIAL NEGATIVE BECAUSE OF THIS TRUCK. THE TIRE SENSORS KEEP GOING ALSO. THESE ISSUES ARE HAPPENING AFTER WE HAVE GOTTEN THIS TRUCK FIXED MULTIPLE TIMES AND MORE DANGEROUSLY WHILE WE ARE DRIVING IT. THE BRAKES, STEERING WHEEL, TRANSMISSION AN THE ENGINE ARE ALL FAULTY. WE HAVE PUT THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS INTO THE THIS VEHICLE. THIS IS OUR TRANSPORTATION TO WORK AND WE ARE BEHIND WITH THE NOTES. EVEN WHEN THE VEHICLE IS STATIONARY THERE IS A GRINDING, ALMOST LIKE THE WHEELS WANT TO FALL OFF. WE NEED THIS FIXED WE NEED HELP!!!!!

THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TURNED OFF AND RESTARTED. THE STEERING WHEEL SHOOK LEFT TO RIGHT ON ITS OWN. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN BACK TO THE HOUSE WITH THE STEERING ABILITY VERY LOOSE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER TWO DAYS LATER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE POWER STEERING AND TIPM FAILED AND NEEDED REPLACEMENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 135,000.
THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THE POWER STEERING 14S05 JULY 2014. WHICH I BROUGHT MY CAR IN FOR AND THEY REPROGRAMED THE COMPUTER. ONE TIME THE POWER STEERING FAILED BUT RESTARTING CAR MADE IT WORK. LAST WEEK MY POWER STEERING FAILED THIS WAS 2 YEARS AFTER THE REPROGRAMING. I BROUGHT IT TO FORD LIVERMORE, CA AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE TORQUE SENSOR WAS THE PROBLEM WHICH WAS NOT FIXED DURING THE RECALL WHEN I BROUGHT IT IN. ANYWAY JUST WANTED TO SAY FORD DID NOT FIX MY POWER STEERING PROBLEM AND IS A SAFETY ISSUE. VEHICLE WAS AT A STOP LIGHT RESTARTED CAR AND POWER STEERING CAME BACK. DROVE HOME PARKED IN GARAGE AND NEXT TIME STARTED CAR POWER STEERING WAS OUT

WE WERE IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT ON AN INTERSTATE HIGHWAY. BRIDGE WAS ICY, AND TRAFFIC WAS STOPPED. WE SLID ON THE ICE AND REAR ENDED THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. WE WERE THEN REAR-ENDED AND DRIVEN MUCH HARDER IN TO THE CAR IN FRONT OF US. NO AIRBAG DEPLOYED IN OUR CAR.

14S05. I WAS DRIVING THE 2009 FORD ESCAPE ON THE HIGHWAY AT APPROX. 70MPH. THE STEERING WILL STOPPED CONTROLLING THE VEHICLE CORRECTLY AND THEN THE STEERING WENT COMPLETELY OUT. I ALMOST CRASHED, PULLED ONTO THE SHOULDER OF THE HIGHWAY, GATHERED MYSELF, CUT ON THE HAZARD LIGHTS AND CUT THE AUTO OFF. AFTER A MINUTE, I STARTED THE AUTO UP AGAIN AND MOVED FORWARD TO SEE IF THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTED. THE POWER STEERING WAS BACK IN BUT IT WAS VERY VERY LOOSE. WHEN I GOT IT HOME I INFORMED MY MOTHER THAT IT NEEDED TO BE LOOKED AT. SHE CALLED THE FORD HOTLINE AND THEY TOLD HER THAT THE RECALL ON HER VEHICLE WAS CLOSED BUT IF THE STEERING WENT OUT, THAT IT WAS COVERED BY THE RECALL. SHE TOOK IT TO THE DEALER THAT FORD TOLD HER TOO AND THEY SAID THEY WOULD REPAIR IT. SHE LEFT THE VEHICLE OVER NIGHT TO BE FIXED BUT THE NEXT DAY THEY TOLD HER THAT IT WASN'T A RECALL AND THAT SHE HAD TO PAY $89 FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC TEST THAT SHE DIDN'T KNOW SHE HAD TO PAY. RETURNED TO GARAGE AND FOUND OUT NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS WITH MANUFACTURING PROBLEM FROM 2008 TILL 2014. HAD TO ORDER AND REPLACE ANOTHER NEW SEAL, BUSHINGS, HALF SHAFT AXEL. WAS TOLD THERE WAS A POSSIBLE FIRE IF NOT FIXED IN TIME. THIS LEAKED WHILE SITTING IN GARAGE AND GOT WORSE AS DRIVEN.
THE VEHICLE IS LOSING POWER STEERING SUDDENLY WHILE IN THE MIDST OF LEFT HAND TURNS. THE CAR SUDDENLY BEEPS, NO WARNING LIGHT APPEARS, AND FOR 1-2 SECONDS THE STEERING WHEEL FEELS COMPLETELY LOCKED UP. APPARENTLY THIS IS DUE TO A FAILING TORQUE SENSOR, AS THE DEALERSHIP REPORTS THAT IT IS SHOWING CODE B2278. THE FAULTY TORQUE SENSOR IS A KNOWN SAFETY ISSUE WITH FORD ESCAPES, PART OF RECALL 14S05. BUT, RATHER THAN FIX THE PROBLEM (FROM WHAT I CAN TELL THEY FREELY ACKNOWLEDGE THE ORIGINAL TORQUE SENSORS WERE DEFECTIVE, AND THE NEW PARTS ARE OF AN IMPROVED, MORE DURABLE, AND SAFER DESIGN), FORD IS ONLY ISSUING A SOFTWARE UPDATE. APPARENTLY I HAD THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE COMPLETED IN 2014, AND YET HERE I AM WITH THE SAME MECHANICAL SAFETY ISSUE TWO YEARS LATER. THE SOFTWARE UPDATE, AS FAR AS MY RESEARCH REVEALS, DOES NOTHING TO ACTUALLY IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF THE VEHICLE, IT JUST MAKES THE CAR BEEP WHEN IT LOSES POWER STEERING. THERE ARE APPARENTLY 740,878 VEHICLES AFFECTED BY THIS ISSUE, WHICH MEANS NEARLY A MILLION UNSAFE FORD ESCAPES AND MERCURY MARINERS ARE DRIVING AROUND THE COUNTRY WITH DEFECTIVE STEERING CONTROLS THAT COULD FAIL AT ANY POINT MID-TURN. THERE WAS A RECALL FOR THIS MODEL OF THE 2009 FORD ESCAPE FOR A STEERING ISSUE. THEY DID NOT HONOUR THE RECALL, EVEN THOUGH THE DEALER EXPLAINED HOW DANGEROUS OF A PROBLEM THIS LACK OF ELECTRIC STEERING WAS CAUSING. I HAD TO PAY FOR AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR OUT OF MY OWN POCKET. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE ELECTRONIC STEERING ASSIST WOULD STOP FUNCTIONING WHILE THE CAR WAS IN MOTION, THIS CAUSED HEAVY VIBRATIONS OF THE STEERING WHEEL AND A LACK OF POWER STEERING.
2008-2011 FORD ESCAPE POWER STEERING RECALL 14S05 I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER FROM FORD MOTOR COMPANY CONCERNING A RECALL ON THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ON MY 2009 FORD ESCAPE. I SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT WITH WINNER FORD OF CHERRY HILL, NJ FOR THIS SERVICE, SINCE IT WAS THE CLOSEST DEALER AT THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO RETURN VEHICLE FOR SERVICE. THE DEALERSHIP PERFORMED THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE CITING THAT NO PROBLEMS WERE FOUND. AS OF NOVEMBER 28TH 2016, MY STEERING SYSTEM HAS BEGUN TO EXHIBIT PROBLEMS FROM THIS RECALL, THE STEERING WHEEL WHILE BOTH IDLE AND DRIVING SHAKES AND VIBRATES WHICH CAUSES THE VEHICLE TO SWERVE AND MAKES PARKING DIFFICULT. I CONTACTED FORD CUSTOMER CARE REGARDING THIS, HOWEVER I WAS INFORMED THAT SINCE THE RECALL WORK OF UPDATING SOFTWARE WAS PERFORMED, THAT THEY CONSIDERED THE ISSUE WITH MY VEHICLE RESOLVED AND NO ADDITIONAL SERVICE WOULD BE PERFORMED UNDER THE 14S05 RECALL, HOWEVER AT MY OWN COSTS COULD HAVE THE VEHICLE RE-EVALUATED AT A DEALERSHIP AND AT MY OWN COST HAVE THE PROPER SERVICE PERFORMED TO REMEDY ANY ISSUED THEY MAY FIND.
