I WAS DRIVING THE 2009 FORD ESCAPE AT APPROXIMATELY 35 MPH, WHEN THE VEHICLE STARTED TO FLUTTER. I WATCHED THE RPMS GO UP AND DOWN. I PRESS THE GAS PEDAL TO KEEP IT FROM DYING OR TURNING OFF, BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. IT KEPT FLUTTERING AND SLOWING DOWN THEN IT TURNED OFF. WHILE THIS WAS HAPPENING THE ORANGE WRENCH SHAPED WARNING LIGHT CAME ON. THE CAR TURNED BACK ON BUT CONTINUES TO DO THIS. I CANT DRIVE IT 2 MILES WITH OUT IT HAPPENING. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER. THEY SAID IT WAS A PART CALLED THE THROTTLE BODY. THEY SAID ITS ON NATIONAL BACK ORDER. AND I WONT HAVE MY VEHICLE FOR ABOUT A MONTH. WOW. NOT .GOOD. RESEARCH DONE SHOWS THOUSANDS OF THE VEHICLES HAD THE SAME PROBLEM FROM 2009 TO 2012 MODELS. *TR
EVEN PRIOR TO THE DATE INDICATED THE CAR WOULD SPUTTER AND LOOSE POWER DRIVING ALONG BUT WOULD RETURN TO NORMAL WITH NO CODES THROWN THIS HAPPENED 3 OR 4 TIMES ? APPROX. ON DATE INDICATED WHILE DRIVING ON THE PARKWAY AT APPROX 50 MPH THE VEHICLE LOST ALL POWER BUT WAS STILL RUNNING AND WOULD NOT RESPOND TO GAS BEING PRESSED DOWN OR UP ? CAR WAS IN THE SPEED LANE WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC AND ALMOST CAUSED A ACCIDENT TRYING TO PULL VEHICLE OFF THE HIGHWAY ! NO CODES OR ANYTHING WERE FOUND ? THIS HAS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES SENSE WITH ON BEING TODAY ON THE BRONX RIVER PARKWAY , I THINK THIS IS AN ACCIDENT WAITING TO HAPPEN,PLEASE HELP! *TR
VEHICLE THROTTLE STUCK OPEN AT 45 MPH. *TR
A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT A 2009 FORD ESCAPE FROM A USED DEALERSHIP, I BEGAN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE SUV. FIRST THE BATTERY DIED, LEAVING ME, MY BOYFRIEND AND HIS 3 YEAR OLD NEPHEW STRANDED IN MALIBU UNTIL 10PM. THE NEXT DAY, WE REPLACED THE BATTERY AT AN AUTO ZONE. AS WE STARTED TO DRIVE HOME, MY CAR SURGES AND STALLS. I TURN THE CAR OFF AND ON AGAIN AND CONTINUE TO DRIVE BUT IN ABOUT 20 FEET, THE CAR SURGES TO A STOP AGAIN AND THE "WRENCH LIGHT" TURNED ON INDICATING A THROTTLE CONTROL/POWERTRAIN PROBLEM. I HAVE MY CAR TOWED TO THE NEAREST BODY SHOP AND THE NEXT DAY THEY TELL ME THEY CANT FIX MY CAR AND THAT I NEEDED TO GET IT TOWED TO A FORD DEALER. I CONTACT THE PRIVATELY OWNED DEALERSHIP WHERE I BOUGHT MY CAR (WHICH IS 40 MINS AWAY FROM MY HOME) AND THEY TELL ME THEY WILL GET SOMEONE TO TOW MY VEHICLE TO THEM. A COUPLE DAYS LATER THEY TELL ME ITS A THROTTLE BODY ISSUE AND THAT I NEEDED TO GET IT REPLACED. AFTER THEY GAVE ME A QUOTE ON HOW MUCH REPAIRS WOULD COST, I TOLD THEM I COULDN'T AFFORD IT SO THEY TRIED CLEANING THE THROTTLE BODY. AFTER THEY CLEANED IT, THEY SAID MY CAR WAS OPERABLE AGAIN BUT I WOULD NEED TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AS SOON AS I COULD. SINCE THEN I HAVE DRIVEN MY CAR ALMOST 300 MILES WITH NO PROBLEMS BUT I AM STILL WEARY THAT MY CAR WILL STALL ON ME AGAIN SO I WILL DEFINITELY HAVE THE PART REPLACED ONCE I HAVE THE MONEY TO DO SO. FOR A WEEK WHILE MY CAR WAS IN THE SHOP(S) I DID A LOT OF RESEARCHING ON MY MAKE AND MODEL SUV AND I HAVE READ MANY COMPLAINTS OF PEOPLE WITH A SIMILAR ISSUE. WHAT I DON'T UNDERSTAND IS WHY THE GOVERNMENT HASN'T ISSUED A RECALL YET. ANYWAY, I'M JUST THANKFUL I WASN'T ON THE FREEWAY OR A BUSY STREET WHEN MY ESCAPE DECIDED TO CRAP OUT ON ME. I COULD HAVE BEEN IN A WAY WORSE OF A SITUATION. *TR
ELECTRIC POWER STEERING REPEATEDLY FAILS; USUALLY WHEN FIRST STARTING VEHICLE, BUT ONCE WHILE DRIVING AT APPROXIMATELY 30MPH. LOCAL FORD DEALER WAS FINALLY ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY HAD TO BE REPLACED TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRICAL POWER STEERING SYSTEM; APPROXIMATELY A $1500 REPAIR BILL. *TR
I WAS DRIVING AND CAME TO A STOP SIGN, TURNED LEFT AND PRESSED THE GAS AND MY CAR WOULDN'T GO, ALL LIGHTS AND GAUGES WERE NORMAL BUT THE GAS PEDAL ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR WOULDN'T MAKE THE CAR GO SO I COASTED OFF TO THE SHOULDER AND ALMOST MADE IT OUT OF THE ROAD. I TRIED CALLING SEVERAL TOW TRUCK COMPANY'S FOR ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND DIDN'T GET AN ANSWER. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINS, I TRIED CRANKING THE CAR. ALL PARTS RAN NORMAL, ALL GAUGES NORMAL, SO I DROVE IT TO WORK AND THEN CALLED THE FORD DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY TOLD ME THAT IS WAS THE THROTTLE BODY. *TR
MY WIFE WAS DRIVING IN OUR NEIGHBOR AT 25 MPH WHEN THE STEERING WENT OUT. SHE WAS ABLE TO GET HOME AND PARK SINCE SHE WAS CLOSE BY. THE STEERING WAS VERY HARD TO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT. THIS MORNING WHEN WE STARTED THE CAR TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALER THE STEERING WAS WORKING. THE CAR IS CURRENTLY AT THE DEALER FOR TESTING. THE TEMPERATURE WAS 80 DEGREES SO CLEARLY COLD WAS NOT A FACTOR. THANK GOODNESS THIS DID NOT HAPPEN ON THE FREEWAY IN TRAFFIC. *TR
I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM A CAMPING TRIP YESTERDAY AND MY VEHICLE SUDDENLY STOPPED MOVING WHILE I WAS ON THE FREEWAY. I PULLED OVER QUICKLY. THE ENGINE WAS STILL RUNNING, BUT KEPT JERKING FORWARD WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE. I TURNED OFF MY VEHICLE AND RESTARTED IT. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE FOR ABOUT A MILE UNTIL I GOT UP TO 50 MPH AND THEN IT DID THE SAME THING. I HAD IT TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY SAID THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER. THE COST TO REPAIR IT IS $325. THE VEHICLE IS ONLY AT 74,000 MILES AND I HAVE HAD ISSUES WITH THE TRANSMISSION SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE 2 YEARS AGO. THE PART NEEDED IS ON BACK ORDER WHICH LEADS ME TO BELIEVE FORD NEEDS TO DO A RECALL. I DO NOT FEEL SAFE IN MY VEHICLE AND WILL NEVER BUY A FORD VEHICLE AGAIN. *TR
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK AND HAD DRIVEN ABOUT 3.5 MILES WHEN I WAS TURNING LEFT GOING ABOUT 10-15 MPH. MY CAR SUDDENLY LOST ACCELERATION AND THE WRENCH ILLUMINATED. I PANIC BECAUSE I WAS ON A STREET WHERE THERE WAS NO AREA TO PULL OFF THE ROAD. I LOOKED IN THE REARVIEW MIRROR TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE WERE NO OTHER CARS BEHIND ME AND PUT ON MY HAZARD LIGHTS AND TURNED OFF THE ENGINE. AFTER ABOUT 30 SECONDS I TURNED THE ENGINE OVER AND IT SPUTTERED TO LIFE, BUT THEN THE WRENCH WARNING LIGHT ILLUMINATED AGAIN AND I COULD NOT ACCELERATE. CARS WERE COMING BEHIND ME AND I TRIED MY BEST TO GIVE THEM ROOM TO DRIVE BY, WHICH WAS HARD AS THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE STREET WAS BUMPER TO BUMPER WITH PARKED CARS. AFTER THE CARS PASSED ME, I TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AGAIN AND WAITED ABOUT 30-45 SECONDS AND THE ENGINE CAME TO LIFE AND I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE HOME WITHOUT ANOTHER INCIDENT. *TR
WHILE DRIVING AT A SET SPEED OF 55 MILE PER HOUR I EXPERIENCED A JERK IN THE POWER TRAIN. THE ENGINE CAUTION LIGHT ILLUMINATED WITH A NOTABLE COMPLETE LOSS OF THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN SPEED. THE CRUISE CONTROL DISENGAGED THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FAILED TO PROVIDE ANY INPUT. I HAD TO IMMEDIATELY MOVE THE FAR RIGHT OUT OF TRAFFIC. THERE WAS NO SHOULDER TO SLOW DOWN ON. I HAD TO PLACE THE CAR IN NEUTRAL IN THE ROUGH AND SLOWLY APPLY BREAK UNTIL I STOPPED THE VEHICLE. I LEFT THE CAR RUNNING AND APPLIED AXEL KERATIN PEDAL. NO RESPONSE. I THEN PLACED THE TRANSMISSION PARK. SHUT OFF THE ENGINE. ON THE FIRST ATTEMPT THE CAR STARTED BUT THE ENGINE CRANKED FOR ABOUT 5 SECONDS BEFORE STATING. I PLACED THE TRANSMISSION IN DRIVE AND WHEN IT WAS SAFE TO RENTER TRAFFIC HEADING TOWARD MY DESTINATION. A FEW MILES LATER THE SAME THING OCCURRED THIS TIME THE CAR HAD ANOTHER LIGHT ILLUMINATE ALONG WITH THE ENGINE LIGHT. AN OPEN ENDED WRENCH. *TR
I WAS LEAVING OUR LOCAL STORE AND TURNED ONTO THE ACCESS ROAD TO HAVE MY CAR START SHAKING AND WON'T GO FASTER THAN ABOUT 4 MPH. RIGHT AFTER, THE POWERTRAIN SYMBOL CAME ON FOLLOWED THE ENGINE LIGHT. WITH MY HAZARD LIGHTS ON I CREPT INTO THE CLOSEST PARKING LOT AND TURNED OFF THE CAR, WAITED A FEW MINUTES AND THEN STARTED IT AGAIN. WHEN TURNED BACK ON THE LIGHTS WERE ALL GONE, SO I ASSUMED IT WAS A FLUKE. UNTIL I STARTED DRIVING AND AS SOON AS I TURNED EVERYTHING TURNED BACK ON AND THE SHAKING HAPPENED AGAIN. I HAD TO HAVE MY VEHICLE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME THE IT WAS THE THROTTLE AND THAT THE PART WAS ON BACK ORDER BECAUSE OF SO MANY OF THE ESCAPES BREAKING IN THE SAME PART. NOW ITS THE SIT AND WAIT GAME FOR WEEKS! *TR
DRIVING IN TOWN AND IT JUST HAD NOTHING... PUSHED ON ACCELERATOR AND IT WOULD NOT DO ANYTHING. CAR DID NOT STALL OUT, SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS GOING TO BUT DIDN'T. STILL HAD ALL POWER JUST WOULD NOT MOVE WHEN GIVING IT GAS. ***TOOK TO MECHANIC ERROR NUMBER SHOWS BAD THROTTLE BODY PART*** *TR
WHILE TRAVELING AT 45 MPH ON A BUSY ROAD, THE ENGINE STOPPED RESPONDING TO THE ACCELERATOR AND BEGAN DECELERATING. THE THROTTLE/POWER-TRAIN WARNING LIGHT WAS ACTIVATED. I HAD TO PULL OVER THE THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO AVOID BEING HIT BY OTHER TRAFFIC. THE CAR BEGAN JERKING FORWARD AS THOUGH IT WAS TRYING TO ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE FOR A MINUTE AND ONCE I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE WARNING LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED. THE NEXT DAY (6/23/2013) I DROVE TO MY CLOSEST FORD DEALER AND THEY DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. THE SERVICE ADVISOR INFORMED ME THAT THE PART WAS CURRENTLY BACKORDERED AND THAT THEY HAD 15 OTHER FORD VEHICLES CURRENTLY WAITING FOR INVENTORY TO ARRIVE. THE COST OF REPAIR IS $473. THE MECHANIC CLEANED OUT THE CARBON FROM MY THROTTLE BODY AS A TEMPORARY FIX UNTIL THE PART ARRIVED. TWO DAYS LATER (6/25/2013), AS I WAS DRIVING 55 MPH, THE SAME PROBLEM OCCURED AND I WAS FORCED TO PULL OVER AND RESTART MY VEHICLE. WHILE DRIVING BACK TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP THE NEXT MORNING TO GET A RENTAL CAR, MY CAR STOPPED RESPONDING AS I WAS CROSSING TRAIN TRACKS (AND I WAS ABLE TO RESTART THE VEHICLE). NOW MY CAR IS CURRENLY SITTING AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP AND I AM PAYING AN ADDITIONAL $33 A DAY FOR A RENTAL CAR WHILE I WAIT FOR THE PART TO ARRIVE (ESTIMATED TO BE 10-13 DAYS). TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT SHE ATTEMPTED TO ACCELERATE BUT THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL FAILED TO RESPOND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHERE IT WAS FOUND THAT THE THROTTLE BODY HAD FAILED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT CONTACTED ABOUT THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 33,850.
DRIVING APPROX. 45 MPH THE ACCELERATION STOPS, NO CONNECTION WITH PEDAL, ENGINE IS STILL RUNNING BUT NO ACCELERATION. EVENTUALLY HAD TO COST TO A STOP, ENGINE RUNNING ROUGH. WRENCH ON DASH IS ON. STOP CAR AND SHUT ENGINE OFF. STARTED ENGINE, STARTS HARD BUT DOES START, WRENCH ON DASH IS OFF BUT SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT IS NOW ON. THIS SAME THING HAPPENS SEVERAL TIMES WITHIN A FEW MILES BEFORE I FINALLY GOT HOME. THIS SAME THING HAPPENED SEVERAL MONTH AGO BUT APPEARED TO CORRECT ITSELF. THIS TIME I TOOK IT TO A SERVICE GARAGE AND WAS TOLD THIS COULD BE THE THROTTLE BODY PROBLEM. THIS APPEARS FROM LOOKING ON LINE THAT IT IS A FORD PROBLEM THAT MANY OTHER PEOPLE HAVE ALSO AND COULD BE DANGEROUS. IT APPEARS THAT THIS IS GOING TO HAPPEN MORE AND MORE OFTEN AND SHOULD NOT BE DRIVEN IN THIS CONDITION. *TR
WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH, THE CAR STALLED. I COULD NOT DO ANYTHING EXCEPT COAST TO THE NEAREST PARKING LOT. I TURNED THE CAR OFF AND THE RESTARTED IT. EVERYTHING SEEMED TO BE FINE BUT LATER THAT NIGHT, THE SAME THING OCCURRED. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER, THEY SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY AND THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER. *TR
WHILE TRAVELING AT 60 MPH ON THE FREEWAY I SUDDENLY LOST POWER. THE CAR SLOWED TO 40MPH. THERE WAS NO RESPONSE TO PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR, AND THE ACCELERATOR BECAME SPONGY. THE THROTTLE/POWER-TRAIN WARNING LIGHT WAS ACTIVATED. I HAD TO PULL OVER TO THE SHOULDER OF THE ROAD TO AVOID BEING HIT BY OTHER TRAFFIC. WHEN I SHUT OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTARTED IT, THE WARNING LIGHT TURNED OFF. I FELT ENDANGERED AND IMMEDIATELY EXITED THE FREEWAY AND DROVE 30 MINUTES TO HOME AT UNDER 40MPH. THE NEXT DAY THE LOCAL FORD DEALER DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS A FAULTY THROTTLE BODY. HE STATED THAT IT WAS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH FORD ESCAPES, AND IT IS NOT COVERED BY WARRANTY. THE COST OF REPAIR IS $615. MY CAR IS WELL MAINTAINED WITH LESS THAN 32,000 MILES. THE POOR QUALITY OF THIS PART CONSTITUTES A DANGEROUS HAZARD. *TR
WHILE DRIVING TO WORK ON A RESIDENTIAL HIGHWAY WITHOUT WARNING THE VEHICLE ENGINE JUST SHUTDOWN. THE LIGHTS ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CAME ON AND MY WIFE WAS FORCED TO COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY. THIS ISSUE HAS OCCURRED 2 TIMES SINCE, ONCE IN AUGUST AND ONCE ON MARCH 17TH, 2014. THE CAR HAS HAD REGULAR SERVICING AND AT THE TIME OF THE FIRST INCIDENT THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE CLOSEST DEALERSHIP FOR A REVIEW WHICH WAS INCONCLUSIVE AS TO THE ROOT CAUSE. CHECK CODE TESTED ALL MODULES WITH ALL PASSING. NO LOW VOLTAGE CODES OR PCM CODES. BATTERY CHECKED AND ALL CONFIRMED TO BE OK. AS A POTENTIAL REMEDY THE PCM WAS FLASHED TO THE MOST CURRENT LEVEL. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 50 MPH, THE VEHICLE DECELERATED INDEPENDENTLY WITH THE ILLUMINATION OF THE WRENCH WARNING ICON. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FAILURE HAD OCCURRED SEVERAL TIMES PRIOR TO THE RECENT FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN THE DEALER, WHO DIAGNOSED THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 54,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 55,000. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD ESCAPE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING 40 MPH, THE VEHICLE STALLED. THE CONTACT HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO A DEALER, WHO PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC TEST BUT COULD NOT GENERATE ANY FAILURE CODES. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED AND THE CONTACT WAS NOT AWARE OF THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 84,902.
I'M DRIVING NORMALLY, AT A CONSTANT SPEED (40), AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, WRENCH LIGHT COMES ON, RPMS DO WEIRD THINGS, GAS PEDAL DOESN'T DO ANYTHING, PUTTING IT IN NEUTRAL IN A DRIFT DOWNSPEED DOES NOTHING, PARK DOES NOTHING. PUTTING IT IN PARK AND SHUTTING THE ENGINE, AND STARTING AGAIN MAKES THE LIGHT GO AWAY AND RUN FINE AGAIN. *TR
ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY CIRCUIT BOARD FAILED (FORD MECHANIC'S DIAGNOSIS) WHILE APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT. CAR HAD BEEN HAVING CONSTANT SPEED SURGES WHILE DRIVING IN 3-4 GEAR POWERBAND AND WAS SERVICED. EVERYTHING SEEMED FINE UNTIL A COUPLE OF WEEKS LATER WHEN THE THROTTLE BECAME UNRESPONSIVE. FORD IS REPLACING THE TB ASSEMBLY WITH WHAT I FEAR IS THE EXACT SAME PART; WEEK AND A HALF WAIT FOR THE PART, NO LONER CAR, NO WARRANTY COVERAGE. *TR
UPON TURNING LEFT THROUGH AN INTERSECTION FROM A RED LIGHT, I ACCELERATED TO REACH ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR. THEN THE VEHICLE STARTED SLOWING DOWN SLIGHTLY SO I PRESSED ON THE GAS SLIGHTLY BUT NOTHING HAPPENED. I THEN NOTICED THAT THE LIGHTS ON THE DASH WERE LIT (THERE IS A LIGHT THAT LOOKS LIKE A WRENCH). I TURNED THE RADIO OFF AND IT SEEMED THAT THE ENGINE WAS NOT RUNNING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL OVER, PLACE THE VEHICLE IN PARK, AND START THE ENGINE. IT SEEMED LIKE I HAD FULL CONTROL OVER STEERING AND BRAKING TO PULL OVER, BUT PERHAPS THAT WAS JUST THE SLOW RATE OF SPEED I WAS AT. NOW EVERYTHING APPEARS TO BE NORMAL NOW, HOWEVER I AM CONCERNED AS I GOOGLED THIS ISSUE AND THERE SEEMS TO BE MANY FOLKS INDICATING THE SAME PROBLEM, SUSPECTING SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE THROTTLE. THIS HAS HAPPENED TWICE TO ME. THE FIRST TIME ABOUT 6 MONTHS AGO, WITH THIS TIME BEING THE MOST RECENT. *TR
WE WERE DRIVING TO BILOXI MI TO THE VA CLINIC FROM PACE FL AND WHEN WE ARRIVED AT THE VA CLINIC ON SUNDAY TO GET OUR HOTEL OUR CAR STARTED HESITATING. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 25 MPH THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING. LUCKILY WE WERE NOT ON A HIGH TRAFFIC STREET SO WE WERE ABLE TO PULL OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, SHUT OFF THE VEHICLE, AND RESTART THE CAR SUCCESSFULLY. THE ESCAPE CONTINUED ON WITHOUT ISSUE BACK HOME TO LAWRENCE, KANSAS. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN AROUND LAWRENCE WITHOUT ANY ISSUE UNTIL FRIDAY, JUNE 21, 2013. ON THIS DATE MY WIFE HAD TO COMMUTE FROM LAWRENCE TO KANSAS CITY, KANSAS, FOR WORK-RELATED TRAINING. ON HER TRIP TO KANSAS CITY (KC) THE VEHICLE STALLED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEED (60+ MPH). SHE WAS SUCCESSFUL RESTARTING THE VEHICLE BUT IT STALLED ONCE AGAIN WHILE IN KC. SHE DROVE THE ESCAPE TO SHAWNEE MISSION FORD TO SEE IF DIAGNOSTICS COULD BE RUN ON THE VEHICLE, BUT THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH TIME LEFT IN THE DAY TO PERFORM THE FULL DIAGNOSTICS. A SERVICE TECHNICIAN TEST-DROVE THE VEHICLE AND WHILE DRIVING IT STALLED ONCE AGAIN. BECAUSE CARSEATS FOR OUR TWO CHILDREN WERE LOCATED IN THE ESCAPE, MY WIFE HAD TO DRIVE FROM KC BACK TO LAWRENCE SO OUR FAMILY WOULD HAVE THESE ITEMS ON HAND. WHILE DRIVING FROM KC TO LAWRENCE THE VEHICLE STALLED ONCE AGAIN AT HIGHWAY SPEED (60+ MPH). ONCE BACK IN LAWRENCE THE VEHICLE WAS DROPPED OFF AT LAIRD NOLLER FORD, AND ON SATURDAY, JUNE 22, 2013, IT WAS DETERMINED BY THEIR SERVICE STAFF THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS DEFECTIVE. THIS PART IS CURRENTLY ON NATIONAL BACKORDER, SO WE COULD BE WITHOUT OUR PRIMARY FAMILY VEHICLE FOR MORE THAN 3 WEEKS. THIS WILL RESULT IN HARDSHIP ON THE FAMILY AND COULD RESULT IN MAJOR FINANCIAL COSTS IF A RENTAL VEHICLE IS NEEDED FOR THE ENTIRE PERIOD WE ARE WITHOUT OUR PRIMARY FAMILY VEHICLE AND COULD HAVE RESULTED IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH AS A RESULT OF THIS DEFECT. *TR
ON 5 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS WHILE DRIVING ANYWHERE FROM STARTING FROM A STOP LIGHT TO TRAVELING UP TO 70 MPH ON A MAJOR INTERSTATE MY FORD ESCAPE HAS SUDDENLY LOST POWER. THE ENGINE DOES NOT LOCK UP, JUST ALL POWER IS LOST. I PRESS THE ACCELERATOR AND THERE IS NO REVVING OF ENGINE. I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GET THE CAR TO A STOP, BUT IT WILL START TO JERK AND STALL. FINALLY I TURN IT OFF, THEN RESTART IT BUT IT I HAVING DIFFICULTY IN STARTING. THUS FAR I HAVE SPENT $240 FOR A TOW AND HAVE HAD 3 MECHANICS INVESTIGATE, ONE HAD NO IDEA BUT HAD "HEARD ABOUT THROTTLE BODY PROBLEMS", A SECOND TOLD ME TO TAKE IT TO THE DEALERSHIP AND CHARGED ABOUT $40 TO CLEAN THE THROTTLE BODY. THE DEALERSHIP HAS TOLD ME ITS THE THROTTLE BODY AND WILL BE CHARGING ABOUT $365 TO REPLACE. *TR
THE CAR WAS RUNNING FINE, THEN SUDDENLY THE ENGINE SEEMED TO DIE AND THE GAS PEDAL STOPPED DOING ANYTHING. THE CAR THEN STARTED VIBRATING AND I HAD TO GET OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD BEFORE IT LOTS ITS VELOCITY. I RESTARTED THE CAR AND IT SEEMED FINE; THEN LATER IN THE DAY THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME ON 8 OCCASIONS IN RAPID SUCCESSION. IN ALL INSTANCES, I AM DRIVING ALONG AS USUAL, AND ALL OF A SUDDEN, MY ACCELERATOR BECOMES NON-RESPONSIVE. ONCE SHE WAS ON THE ROAD TRAVELING APPROXIMATELY 40 MPH THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN. HER FATHER WAS FOLLOWING HER, AND AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF WAITING, THEY WHERE ABLE TO RESTART AND CONTINUE THE DRIVE. HER FATHER DROVE THE CAR THE REST OF THE DISTANCE AND, THE PROBLEM HAPPENED AGAIN. FORTUNATELY IN ALL 3 SITUATIONS THEY WHERE ABLE TO PULL OVER AND OFF THE ROAD. CAR HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP SINCE THURSDAY OF LAST WEEK AWAITING FOR A NEW ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY WHICH APPARENTLY IS ON MAJOR BACK ORDER. ATTEMPTED TO CONTACT OUR FORD DEALER BUT WAS GREETED WITH LESS THEN FRIENDLY CUSTOMER SERVICE FROM THE SERVICE CENTER. CAR IS OUT OF WARRANTY, AND REPAIR IS GOING TO BE OVER $325 (QUOTED) IF OUR REPAIR SHOP CAN GET THE PART. MY WIFE AND MYSELF ARE VERY CONCERNED ABOUT THIS AS THE PROBLEM HAPPENED ONCE BEFORE SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, AND HAPPENED ON A VERY BUSY STREET, FORTUNATELY NO ONE REAR ENDED HER. HOWEVER, AFTER A FEW DAYS THE PROBLEM HAPPENED TWICE MORE, THIS TIME WITH THE ENGINE COMPLETELY SHUTTING OFF WHILE IDLING AT A STOP LIGHT AND WHILE DRIVING SLOWLY DOWN A NEIGHBORHOOD STREET. THE GARAGE DETERMINED THERE TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE THROTTLE BODY AND IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
I ACCELERATED FROM A STOPPED POSITION AND IN APPROXIMATELY 100 FEET THE ACCELERATOR STOP WORKING. THE ENGINE DID NOT DIE BUT THE VEHICLE WOULD ONLY IDLE AT A SLOW PACE. I STOPPED THE CAR, PUT IN PARK, TURNED OFF THE ENGINE AND THEN RESTARTED. THE ACCELERATOR WORKED AT THAT TIME AND I CONTINUED ONTO THE HIGHWAY WITH NO PROBLEM. I WAS TRAVELING AT 75 MPH FOR ABOUT 10 MILES WHEN THE ACCELERATOR STOPPED WORKING AGAIN AND THE VEHICLE SLOWED TO AN IDLE. I REPEATED THE SAME PROCESS AS BEFORE, STOP, PUT IN PARK, TURNED OFF ENGINE AND RESTARTED. THE ACCELERATOR WORKED AGAIN AND I CONTINUED ON 10 MILES AND MADE IT HOME. THE NEXT AVAILABLE DAY THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP. I EXPERIENCED (2) OF THE SAME SCENERIOS LISTED ABOVE ALONG MY 6 MILE ROUTE TO THE DEALERSHIP. AFTER (2) DAYS THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY WITH A $574 PRICE TAG TO REPAIR. THE SERVICE PERSON STATED THIS WAS NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY OR A RECALL ITEM. 0630HR REVERSED CAR FROM GARAGE REACHED ROAD 30FT ,THEN PLACED IN D ACCELERATED TO ABOUT 15MPH THEN SUDDEN LOST OF POWER AND DECELERATION SIMILAR TO APPLYING BRAKE DRIVE WENT INTO 'LIMP' MODE WITHOUT WARNING.A WRENCH SHOWED UP AS A FAULT WARNING ON THE DASH. THE THROTTLE CONTROL/POWERTRAIN WARNING LIGHT CAME. THE ESCAPE WOULDN'T ACCELERATE ON 6/4. I WAS ABLE TO GET TO A SPOT OUT OF THE DRIVING LANE AND TURN IT OFF. I RESTARTED AND DIDN'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS UNTIL THIS MORNING 6/6. IT HAPPENED WHILE MY SON WAS DRIVING TO SCHOOL. HE ALSO WAS ABLE TO STOP SAFELY. TURN OFF THE ESCAPE AND RESTART IT WITH NO PROBLEMS. CALLED THE DEALER. THEY WANT IT IN FOR SERVICE RIGHT AWAY. *TR
