BROKEN TOE LINK. FORD REFUSING TO RECOGNIZE IT AS A FAILURE UNDER FORD RECALL 19S17. THEY SAY IT WAS REPAIRED UNDER FORD RECALL 17S11. REAR DRIVER SIDE TOE LINK BROKE 7/25/20 WHEN GOING OVER A RAILROAD GRADE CROSSING. OEM REPLACEMENT PART PURCHASED FROM FORD DEALER BROKE 8/24/20 TURNING GENTLY TO THE LEFT. ATTACHED PICTURE IS THE ORIGINAL LINK THAT BROKE 7/25/20. REPLACEMENT PART BOUGHT THROUGH FORD DEALER BROKE IN APPROXIMATELY THE SAME AREA.
NOTICED PROBLEM WITH STEERING. WHEN I CHANGED LANES THE VEHICLE CONTINUED IN THAT DIRECTION UNTIL I CORRECTED IT. THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES WHILE DRIVING HOME FROM WORK SO I WENT STRAIGHT TO MATT BOWERS FORD IN METAIRIE. I WAS TOLD THE STEERING GEAR NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THE MODULE REPROGRAMMED AND AN ALIGNMENT. I'VE SEEN QUITE A FEW RECALLS CONCERNING THIS BUT WAS NOT TOLD THAT MY VHEICLE VIN WAS NOT AFFECTED. I NOW SEE MANY PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING OF THE SAME PROBLEMS. THIS SHOULD BE LOOKED AT CAREFULLY BEFORE SOMEONE GETS HURT.
ON AUGUST 20, 2020, MY VEHICLE HAD LAST BEEN DRIVEN AROUND 12 NOON. IT SAT IN THE DRIVEWAY WITH ALL OF US HOME. MY SON WENT TO GET IN THE VEHICLE AROUND 6:30 PM. SMOKE POURED OUT, THE SEAT WAS SMOLDERING AND FLAMES CAME UP. WE COULDN'T PUT THE FIRE OUT WITH EXTINGUISHER. FIRE DEPARTMENT PUT HOSE ON SEAT. FIREMEN STATED THEY SEE THIS OFTEN WITH HEATED/AIRCONDITIONED SEATS THAT MALFUNCTION AND BURN UP OR CAUSE FIRE. FIREMEN STATED THEY COULD TELL THE WAY IT LOOKED "LIKE ALL THE OTHER HEATED /AIR CONDITIONED SEATS THAT IGNITE THAT THEY SEE OFTEN". INSURANCE COMPANY SAYS CAR IS TOTALED SINCE HOSE WAS PUT ON IT. FORD WILL NOT WORK WITH ME. NO ONE LEFT ANYTHING BURNING IN THE SEAT OR SMOKED IN THE CAR. I BELIEVE THE CAR HEATED/AIR CONDITIONED SEAT MALFUNCTIONED AND FORD SHOULD HELP. I HAD PURCHASED BUMPER TO BUMPER WARRANTY FROM DEALERSHIP. WARRANTY COMPANY SAYS IF A CAR CATCHES FIRE, WARRANTY IS VOIDED, EVEN IF CAR MALFUNCTIONED CAUSING THE FIRE. INSURANCE COMPANY IS TRYING TO PAY AS LEAST AMOUNT AS POSSIBLE. THIS WAS A WELL CARED FOR, VERY NICE CAR. I BELIEVE IT MALFUNCTIONED. FORD MOTOR COMPANY SENT ME A LETTER SAYING THEY HAD THE DEALERSHIP TAKE PICTURES, AND THEY FEEL IT HAD SOMETHING LEFT BURNING ON THE SEAT. NO ONE LEFT ANYTHING BURNING ON THE SEAT. IN THE LETTER FORD MOTOR COMPANY SENT ME BY EMAIL, THEY STATE THEY INSPECTED THE CAR. THEY NEVER CAME TO SEE THE CAR IN PERSON. THEY ONLY HAD THE SERVICE STAFF TAKE PICTURES. THE CAR WAS SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY ALL AFTERNOON. I ALSO BACKED OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY IN MY SUBARU AT 5:00 PM AND DID NOT SMELL OR SEE SMOKE AS I LEFT.. THE PASSENGER SEAT THAT IGNITED ITSELF HAD A STACK OF BUSINESS PAPERS AND SOME SOCCER GEAR THAT COULD HAVE OVERHEATED IF THE SEAT WAS MALFUNCTIONING TOO. THE SEAT IGNITED BY ITSELF. AS A CONSUMER I DESERVE TO BE ASSISTED. I WOULD LIKE THE CAR REPAIRED OR REPLACED W/SIMILAR CAR.*DT CONSUMER STATED VEHICLE WAS TOTALED AND SETTLEMENT WAS OFFERED BY THE INSURANCE COMPANY. VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. *JB
STEERING WOULD LOCK UP AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO FORCE THE STEERING BACK TO DRIVE ABILITY. THE RACK AND PINION WAS WORN OUT, IN MY OPINION PREMATURELY. THIS HAPPENED WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION. THE FIRST TIME IT WAS NOTICE WAS ON HIGHWAY DRIVING IN A CONSTRUCTION ZONE. THE STEERING WOULD CATCH WHEN TURNING LEFT OR RIGHT AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO FORCE THE WHEEL TO STRAIGHTEN OUT THE VEHICLE.
THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION ON A STATE HIGHWAY WHEN THE FOLLOWING WARNING MESSAGES WERE DISPLAYED STEERING ASSIST FAULT SERVICE REQUIRED, HILL START ASSIST NOT AVAILABLE, SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC, TERRAIN MANAGEMENT SYSTEM FAULT. AT THIS POINT I HAD COMPLETE LOSS OF POWER STEERING. I WAS ABLE TO PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD SAFELY AND HAD TO HAVE TOWED. LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP DIAGNOSED THE PROBLEM AS POWER STEERING CONTROL MODULE.WHICH IS INTEGRAL WITH THE RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY.
I WAS TURNING INTO A GAS STATION AND THE POWER STEERING WENT OUT WITH NO PREVIOUS WARNINGS OR ISSUES.
STARTED HAVING ISSUES WITH THE STEERING AT 39,500 MILES. SOUNDED LIKE A POPPING OR CLUNK TYPE NOISE WHEN I TURNED THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. I TOOK IT TO FORD DEALERSHIP WHO INDICATED THE WHOLE STEERING ASSEMBLY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS CAR WAS BUILT AT THE CHICAGO PLANT LIKE ALL THE OTHER EXPLORERS THAT NEEDED THE STEERING ASSEMBLY REPLACED. FORD INDICATED THIS VIN WAS NOT PART OF RECALL.
I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM DROPPING MY DAUGHTER OFF AT DAYCARE AND I LOST THE POWER STEERING ON MY VEHICLE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION AND I WAS DRIVING A STEADY SPEED DOWN A STRAIGHT ROAD. MY DAUGHTER WAS NO LONGER IN THE CAR WITH ME AS THIS COULD HAVE RESULTED IN AN ACCIDENT BUT THANKFULLY SHE WAS NOT AND I WAS ABLE TO PULL OFF THE ROAD WITH A LOT OF EFFORT INVOLVED. MY CAR HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE FORD SHOP AND I HAD TO HAVE MY POWER STEERING CORE CHANGED. $2500. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 37,000 MILES AND IS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. QUITE FRUSTRATING, DISAPPOINTING AND EXPENSIVE. THERE NEEDS TO BE A RECALL WITH THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THIS HAS HAPPENED TOO.
WHILE DRIVING THE TRACTION CONTROL AND ABS LIGHTS COME ON. SYSTEM HAS STABILITY CONTROL WARNING. WHILE DRIVING THIS CAUSES BRAKES TO LOCK UP. MY WIFE ALMOST CRASHED DUE TO THE BRAKES LOCKING. ONCE YOU TURN OFF THE CAR IT WILL RESET AND EVERYTHING APPEARS NORMAL UNTIL IT HAPPENS AGAIN. UNFORTUNATELY THIS INCIDENT DOES NOT STORE ANY CODES IN THE SYSTEM. WE HAVE HAD THE 2016 EXPOLORER IN THE SHOP MULTIPLE TIMES AND THE DEALERSHIPS HAVE DONE NOTHING TO FIX THE ISSUE. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO CODES THEY ARE DOING NOTHING. THEY DO NOT RESEARCH THE ISSUE NOR HAVE THEY TRIED TO FIX ANYTHING. THERE ARE MULTIPLE COMPLAINTS ABOUT THIS AND A PROCEDURE NEEDS TO BE ESTABLISHED TO DIAGNOSE AND FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED BY FORD BEFORE SOMEONE DIES. MY WIFE WILL NO LONGER DRIVE THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE SHE FEEL UNSAFE.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE THE ENGINE COOLANT OVER TEMPERATURE MESSAGE WAS DISPLAYED ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DIAGNOSED THAT A FLUID LEAK WAS PRESENT BEHIND THE WATER PUMP. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE LOCAL DEALER MCGOVERN FORD LOCATED AT 1212 WESTFORD ST, LOWELL, MA 01851 AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NOT INCLUDED IN NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 16V183000 (ENGINE, ENGINE COOLING). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE HAD EXPERIENCED THE SAME FAILURE LISTED IN THE RECALL. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 99,000.
I INITIALLY HAD 'STEERING FAULT' ALERT A FEW MONTHS AGO. JUST TODAY A 'TERRAIN MAINTENANCE FAULT' ALERT CAME UP WITH A FEW ALERTS ICONS ON THE DASHBOARD. THE STEERING FROZE TO THE POINT I COULD ONLY MOVE THE STEERING WHEEL AN INCH WHILE MUSCLING IT TO A STOP. APPARENTLY, ACCORDING TO THE DEALERSHIP, THIS IS A KNOW ISSUE. THEY HAD ME RESTART THE SUV AND THAT TEMPORARILY SOLVED THE ISSUE, BUT IT COULD HAPPEN AGAIN AT ANYTIME. THE DEALERSHIP SAID, IF THE ISSUE ISN'T OCCURRING WHEN I BRING THE SUV IN THEY CAN'T SPECIFICALLY DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM, BUT MORE THAN LIKELY THE STEERING GEAR NEEDS TO BE REPLACE FOR ~$2K. AS I AM READING OTHERS, THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE THAT COULD PUT DRIVERS IN DANGER AND HAVE FOR OTHERS. I WAS IN MARSHFIELD, MA WHEN THIS HAPPENED, DRIVING 30 MPH APPROXIMATELY 2PM ON PLAIN STREET.
The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission became inoperable. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the torque convertor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was contacted and referred the contact to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.
PASSENGER SIDE WINDSHIELD TRIM MOLDING FLEW OFF WHILE DRIVING. DRIVER SIDE DOOR TRIM PANEL LOOSE.
49000 MILES, ELECTRONIC STEERING IS STARTING TO GO OUT. WHEN DRIVING MODERATE SPEEDS CAR MAKES LOUD AUDIBLE NOISES ESPECIALLY WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. RACK AND PINION WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. FORD TOLD ME IT WAS 100% SAFE TO DRIVE. TOOK TO INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO SAID THE EXACT OPPOSITE AND SHOULD BE REPLACED BEFORE IT GOES OUT HEAVEN FORBID AT HIGH SPEEDS.FAMILY OF 4 YOUNG KIDS, THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SAFE, FAMILY CAR. FORD IS PUTTING A LOT OF FAMILIES AT RISK NOT RECALLING THIS. THIS CAR ONLY HAS 49K MILES. THEY ARE LOSING LOTS OF RETURN CUSTOMERS BY NOT HANDLING A SAFETY ISSUE PROPERLY. I HOPE NO DEATHS HAVE TO HAPPEN TO BRING MORE SEVERITY TO THIS PRESSING ISSUE. IF YOU HEAR A CLICK WHEN STEERING, GET THE CAR INSPECTED ASAP! CLICKING OCCURS WHEN STATIONARY AND IS MORE INTENSE WHEN DRIVING. IT COULD GO OUT AT ANY MOMENT.
Driving highway speed, passenger side A pillar trim flew off of vehicle. Called Ford, they responded that no support was available for this incident. Self-repaired.
THIS CAR HAS EXTREMELY BAD SWAY IN THE REAR END, IT CANNOT BE DRIVEN OVER 40 MPH OR YOU WILL LOSE TOTAL CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE
THE RACK & PINION MOTOR FAILED ON THIS VEHICLE AFTER ONLY APPROXIMATELY 40,000 MILES. IN THIS INSTANCE IT DID NOT CAUSE AN ACCIDENT. HOWEVER, I UNDERSTAND THAT THESE MOTORS ARE FAILING AT A RELATIVELY HIGH RATE AND STEERING COULD LOCK UP IN THESE VEHICLES WHILE DRIVING.
WHEN I GO TO TURN, IT CONTINUES TO POP. THE TIE RODS HAVE BEEN REPLACED ALONG WITH RACK AND PINION BUT YOU COULD BE STOPPED AND APPLYING BRAKE AND TURN WHEEL AND IT POPS.
STEERING WAS GETTING DIFFICULT WHILE MAKING TURNS. TOOK IT TO A FORD DEALER AND WAS TOLD THE RACK & PINION NEED TO BE REPLACED FOR $2,560 AND IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. FORD IS NOT COVERING THIS ISSUE EVEN THOUGH IT IS A FAULTY PART ON THEIR END AND SHOULD BE THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.
THIS TRUCK HAS HAD ISSUES SINCE I BOUGHT IT LIKE 5 MONTHS AGO FROM CARMAX WITHIN THAT TIME I REALLY ONLY HAD IT A MONTH REST OF TIME IT HAS BEEN IN THE SHOP I BOUGHT WITH 26K MILES FROM CARMAX ALREADY HAD REBUILT ENGINE BREAKS ROADERS STILL HAVE ENGINE ISSUES NOW TODAY BELT BROKE AND NEEDS TO BE TOWED I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAVE DO MANY ISSUES WITH A NEW TRUCK NOT MENTION IF YOU DO NOT SHUT THE TRUNK HARD IT WILL DRAIN THE BATTERY SINCE IT KEEPS THE LIGHTS ON IN THE TRUCK ALREADY HAD TO REPLACE THE BATTERY. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN A LEMON SINCE DAY ONE AND SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN SOLD I FEEL THIS TRUCK IS NOT RELIABLE AND UNSAFE AT TIMES. NOT WORTH THE 26000 I PAID FOR IT. PLUS THE SENSORS GO OFF FOR NO REASON AND NOTHING IS AROUND.
THE FLUIDITY OF THE STEERING IS DETERIORATING. WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL RIGHT OR LEFT THERE IS A GRINDING SOUND OF METAL ON METAL. INTERMITTENTLY I HAVE TO WRESTLE WITH THE STEERING WHEEL WHEN ACCELERATING THROUGH A TURN WHICH IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN I HAVE AS I TYPICALLY AM TRAVELING WITH TWO YOUNG CHILDREN. THE PROBLEM HAS ARISEN IN THE PAST THREE MONTHS AND THE MECHANIC I UTILIZE, WHO DOES NOT REPAIR STEERING RACKS, REPORTED THAT THE COST OF ADDRESSING THE ISSUE COULD EXCEED $1000. THIS PROBLEM SHOULD NOT BE ASSOCIATED WITH A 2016 MODEL THAT JUST WENT OVER 50,000 MILES AND IS NOT SUBJECTED TO ROUGH, EXTENDED DRIVING BUT RATHER MOST DAYS ARE A 28 MILE ROUND TRIP FOR WORK.
OUR 2016 FORD EXPLORER WITH 44K MILES IS MAKING KNOCKING SOUNDS WHILE TURNING. THE SOUND WAS INTERMITTENT AT TIMES SO NOT ALL TURNS MADE THE KNOCKING SOUND.WE HAD IT LOOKED AT BY A MECHANIC AND HE SAID THE RACK AND PINION STEERING IS GOING OUT. HE EXPLAINED IN MORE DETAIL, BUT THE GIST OF IT IS A REPAIR COST OF $2K ON A VEHICLE THAT'S NOT PAID OFF AND EXTREME HAZARD TO DRIVE. THIS IS A CRITICAL CONCERN FOR MANY FORD EXPLORER OWNERS THAT HAVE REPORTED THE SAME ISSUE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE.
WHILE DRIVING AT 75 MPH THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED A LOSS OF POWER STEERING, THE WHEEL JERKED AND I ALMOST RAN OFF THE ROAD. THEN THE STEERING MADE GRINDING NOISES. THE DEALERSHIP WANTS $1500 FOR THE PART AND JUST AS MUCH OR MORE FOR THE LABOR, NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS APPROXIMATELY 77000 MILES ON IT.
I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY 65 IN HAM LAKE, MN SEVERAL WEEKS AGO WHEN I SUDDENLY LOST CONTROL OF THE STEERING. THE VEHICLE LUNGED TO THE LEFT TOWARDS THE DITCH. I WAS ABLE TO FISHTAIL IT BACK ONTO THE ROAD, ALMOST ROLLED THE VEHICLE AND BARELY KEPT IT UNDER CONTROL. I GOT OVER TO THE RIGHT SHOULDER AND CALL THE ANOKA COUNTY SHERIFF FOR ASSISTANCE. A DEPUTY ASSISTED BUT I DON'T BELIEVE A FORMAL POLICE REPORT WAS FILED. THIS WAS SUNDAY JULY 19TH. WE WERE ABLE TO GET TO LOCAL MECHANIC WHO LOOKED AT IT THE FOLLOW DAY AND DETERMINED THAT THE TOE CONTROL LINK HAD BROKEN. THEY REPAIRED IT WITH A NEW PART FROM THE LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP AND THE VEHICLE SEEMED FINE. LAST NIGHT THE NEW PART THAT THEY INSTALLED BROKE AS WELL. I LOOKED ONLINE AND SEE THAT THERE IS A RECALL FOR THIS EXACT PART, THE TOE CONTROL LINK ON 2011-2017 FORD EXPLORERS. I CHECKED THE VIN ON THE NTSB WEBSITE BUT IT INDICATES THAT OUR CAR IS NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL. WE HAD BROUGHT THE CAR INTO METROPOLITAN FORD IN EDEN PRAIRIE EARLIER IN THE YEAR FOR OTHER RECALL ISSUES. HAD THE RECALL BEEN COMPREHENSIVE, THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN CAUGHT AND FIXED. AT 65 MPH, MY DAUGHTER AND I SHOULD HAVE BOTH BEEN KILLED IN THE ORIGINAL INCIDENT. IT HAD BEEN SEVERAL WEEKS SINCE THE (NEAR) ACCIDENT AND WE ARE STILL SHAKEN UP BY IT. FORTUNATELY, LAST NIGHT'S INCIDENT WAS AT MUCH SLOWER SPEED. I AM FEARFUL THAT THERE ARE OTHER FAMILIES WHOSE LIVES IN DANGER AS WELL. I HAVE A PHOTO THAT I TOOK OF THE CURRENT (SECOND) BREAK THAT OCCURRED THAT IS ATTACHED.
STEERING FAULT LIGHT CAME ON TWICE IN TWO DAYS, BOTH INSTANCES HAPPENED AFTER TAKING OFF FROM A STOPLIGHT. TOOK THE VEHICLE IN THE DEALERSHIP WHERE THEY READ THE CODES AND IT CAME BACK THE STEERING ASSEMBLY WAS FAILING. THEY PROCEEDED TO TELL ME THAT THE STEERING COULD GO OUT ANY MINUTE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 57K MILES ON IT BUT OF COURSE ISN'T COVERED UNDER POWER TRAIN WARRANTY. AFTER GOOGLING THE ISSUE, IT SEEMS AS THOUGH THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM AND THE DEALERSHIP CONVENIENTLY HAD THE A STEERING ASSEMBLY IN STOCK. NOT SURE WHAT THE HOLD UP IS FOR FORD TO ISSUE A RECALL! THIS COULD KILL SOMEONE.
POWER STEERING WENT ON A 2016 FORD EXPLORER XLT WITH 57001 MILES ON IT. CHARGED FOR STEERING RACK/BOX REPLACEMENT PLUS OTHER ASTRONOMICAL FEES ASSOCIATED WITH IT OUT OF POCKET. THE VEHICLE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A FAMILY CAR. IT IS UNSAFE AND HASN'T BEEN THE SAME SINCE. CAR JUST GAVE OUT ON HIGHWAY WITH CHILDREN IN CAR. THE CAR STARTED TO ACTIVELY SWAY ALL OVER THE ROAD WITHOUT WARNING. NO CONTROL. HAD TO PULL OVER. CALLED FOR ASSISTANCE AND THAN RESTARTED THE CAR TO HAVE NO POWER STEERING WHAT SO EVER. IT WAS WORSE THAN TRYING TO DRIVE A HEAVY DUTY TRUCK. AS A FEMALE, I COULD NOT EVEN TURN THE STEERING WHEEL. NO CODES CAME UP PRIOR; UNTIL THE RESTART OF THE CAR. ???? DEALER TOOK WEEK TO GET IT IN PLUS A DAY FOR PART AND THOUSANDS OUT OF MY POCKET DURING A WORLD WIDE PANDEMIC. WITH MASSIVE AMOUNTS OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT THIS ISSUE WHY HASN'T IT BEEN RECALLED? THIS IS INCREDIBLY DANGEROUS.
I have a 2016 Ford Explorer that the water pump keeps failing. In September 2020, I had to pay nearly $1500 to replace the water pump because it was leaking coolant which made the engine to overheat. Now, since October/November of 2021, the coolant begin to leak again which cause the engine to overheat. I took it to the mechanic who confirmed it appears to be the water pump. This is the second time filing a complaint with NHTSA. The first complaint was in January 2022, but I hace yet to receive any response. This appears to be a constant issue and I don't have the funds to continue paying for Ford's defect. How can I get ford to rectify this issue and how to get reimbursement for the repair already completed.
I OWN A 2016 FORD EXPLORER WHICH HAS 78,146 MILES AND WHILE DRIVING THE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AND THE VEHICLE STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. I HAD TO PUT MY CAR IN NEUTRAL AND COAST TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD WITH MY CHILDREN IN THE CAR. I JUST PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE FROM EVERETT FORD IN BENTON, ARKANSAS LESS THAN A YEAR AGO AND HAVE HAD NORMAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE COMPLETED ACCORDING THE THE OWNERS MANUAL. AFTER HAVING A MECHANIC TAKE A LOOK IT IS A RESULT OF A FAULTY WATER PUMP IN WHICH I WAS QUOTED $2500-$3500 FOR A REPLACEMENT IN ADDITION THE ENGINE WOULD BE SEVERAL THOUSAND. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE WATER PUMP IS INSIDE THE ENGINE AND SO WHEN THE WATER PUMP FAILS IT DESTROYS THE ENGINE WITHOUT WARNING BY MIXING THE COOLANT WITH THE ENGINE OIL. AFTER LOOKING INTO THIS FURTHER THE DEALERSHIP AND THE MANUFACTURER WERE AWARE OF THIS MECHANICAL DEFECT AND THE THOUSANDS OF CUSTOMERS THAT WERE AFFECTED BUT CONTINUE TO ADVERTISE 'BUILT FORD TOUGH'TO DRIVE SALES AND DID NOT WARN CUSTOMERS OR MAKE THEM AWARE. THIS IS A SAFETY CONCERN FOR ALL OWNERS OF THE FORD DURATEC V6 ENGINE AND THERE SHOULD BE A FORCED RECALL BY THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY SAFETY ADMINISTRATION. DO NOT WAIT FOR THERE TO BE DEATHS FROM THIS MECHANICAL DEFECT BEFORE TAKING ACTION. FORD SHOULD TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. I'VE READ SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE WITH SAME PROBLEM, AND EVEN WITH PAST EXPLORERS WITH RECALLS. WHY HAS FORD NOT RECALLED THIS PROBLEM AS THEY DID WITH PAST EXPLORERS?? The contact owns a 2016 Ford Explorer. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering functionality and became difficult to steer. The contact also stated that the vehicle would start shaking abnormally whenever the brake pedal was depressed. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with the electronic steering gear needing to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred a year later. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 144,000.

THIS SERVICE BULLETIN REPLACES THE CONNECTORS FOR THE LEFT AND RIGHT SECOND ROW SEATING AIRBAG CONTROL AND RE-ROUTES HARNESS. VEHICLE HAS 45,319 MILES (BELOW THE 5YR/60,000 SRS WARRANTY) HOWEVER DEALER CLAIMS REPAIR IS OUT OF POCKET. DEALER ALSO STATED WHEN THE AIRBAG LIGHT IS ON NO AIRBAGS WILL DEPLOY IN EVENT OF ACCIDENT.
WHILE SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT MULTIPLE WARNING SENSORS WENT OFF AND WE LOST ALL POWER STEERING ONCE WE STARTED TO ACCELERATE THE CAR. WE TOOK THE CAR TO OUR MECHANIC WHO SAID THAT THE ENTIRE RACK AND PINION NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THIS CAR HAS 53K MILES ON IT. I HAVE TWO SMALL CHILDREN AND HAD THIS HAPPENED ON A BUSY ROAD, IT WOULD HAVE PUT ALL OF US IN EXTREME DANGER. THERE WAS NO PREVIOUS WARNINGS, IT JUST WENT.
WHILE OPERATING THE VEHICLE WE NOTICED OVERTIME A CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE AS WE DROVE DOWN THE ROAD MAKING TURNS AND BACKING UP OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. WE HAVE READ ABOUT INSTANCES OF PEOPLE EXPERIENCING A PROBLEM DRIVING AND TRYING TO STEER THE CAR AND IT LOCKING PREVENTING STEERING OF THE VEHICLE. THIS HAPPENED TEMPORARILY TO US SO I AM REPORTING IT AS IT CAN BE WORSE DOWN THE ROAD AS A SAFETY HAZARD TO US AND OTHER PEOPLE ON THE ROAD. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 40,000 MILES AND SHOULD NOT BE EXPERIENCING THESE TYPES OF ISSUES SO EARLY AND OWNERSHIP. WE DRIVE THE VEHICLE LESS THAN 10000 MILES PER YEAR.
THIS IS A POLICE VEHICLE AND WHILE RESPONDING TO AN EMERGENCY CALL, THE STEERING FAULTED WITH A STEERING FAULT WARNING ON THE DASH. THE STEERING WHEEL LOCKED WITH VERY LITTLE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE. THANKFULLY I WAS ABLE TO PLACE THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND SHUT DOWN AND RESTART THE VEHICLE AS I WAS ON A STRAIGHT AWAY! THIS RESET THE COMPUTER AND STEERING RETURNED. IT HAS HAPPENED AGAIN SINCE THIS OCCURRED, THIS IS GOING TO KILL SOMEONE!
WHEN TURNING RIGHT AT A SLOW SPEED, HEAVY KNOCKING/THUMPING NOISE AND STEERING WAS JERKY. VEHICLE HAS 33,400 MILES. HAD IT REPAIRED AT THE FORD DEALERSHIP YESTERDAY AND THEY REPLACED THE RACK AND PINION AT A COST OF $1800. SINCE I READ THIS SEEMS TO BE A COMMON PROBLEM I ASKED IF THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN RECALLED AND WAS INFORMED IT WAS NOT.
i have had NOTHING but issues with this vehicle and have made more calls to complain to ford with no help. as an example i complained for 2 years about this rattle and clunk in my transmission..finally i got the ford dealership in clarion, pa to believe me..here it was the torque converter..after 2 years of complaining and after i got it back...a week later..i get a recall notice from ford! but, the purpose of this is my tailgate...has a mind of it's own...it will open on it's own and close...i don't know how many times this has happened...thank God it hasn't happened while i am driving...i have had it to the garage...nothing can be found...yet i researched this issue and found others having similar experience!!!! i have called ford and of course...they refuse to acknowledge my concerns...i have been clunked on the head more than once loading groceries...hopefully you will be an agency that actually does something as opposed to those that talk tough...but do nothing! thank you.

THE GENTLEMAN AT THE GARAGE ALLUDED TO IT BEING A DEFECTIVE PART BUT FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. IT IS 100% ON ME TO GET REPAIRED. SATURDAY JUNE 20TH 2020 THE HILL ASSIST MESSAGE CAME ON AS DID THE ABS AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS CAME ON. THERE IS NO POWER STEERING AND BOTH AXLES ARE MAKING A CLICKING NOISE. I HAVE LEARNED THAT THIS IS THE RACK AND PINION ELECTRONIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM. EPAS UNIT HAS FAILED. LUCKILY IT WAS IN MY CUL DE SAC TURNING AROUND AND NOT ON THE FREEWAY. MY WIFE PREDOMINANTLY DRIVES THIS VEHICLE. THE STEERING IS VERY DIFFICULT TO MOVE. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAS 64,000 MILES ON IT. IS THIS A PRIVATE RECALL? CAR IS UNSAFE AND UN-DRIVABLE IN THIS CONDITION. ADVISED THE RACK AND PINION IS BAD AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED AT APPROX $2000.
OUR STEERING WHEEL LOCKED UP WHILE TURNING IN AN INTERSECTION. THERE WAS ALSO A KNOCKING NOISE WHEN WE WOULD TURN THE WHEEL TO THE RIGHT. WHEN WE TOOK IT TO THE FORD DEALER THEY SAID THAT THE STEERING GEAR HAD GONE BAD AND WAS MOST LIKELY CAUSED BY A LEAK IN THE POWER TRANSFER UNIT OF POWER TRANSFER FLUID. THE SERVICE TECHNICIAN INDICATED THAT THERE WAS NOTHING THAT WE DID AS DRIVERS TO CAUSE THE PTU TO LEAK. WE HAVE SEEN MANY REPORTS ABOUT THE STEERING GEAR PROBLEMS IN THE YEAR AND MODEL OF OUR VEHICLE. THE COST TO REPAIR THE STEERING GEAR AND THE LEAK WAS OVER $5000.00.

VEHICLE WAS RETURNED TO DEALER FOR REVIEW, DEALER CONFIRMED THE RACK AND PINION WAS FAILING AND WAS A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE. DEALER ALSO CONFIRMED THEY HAVE TO REPLACE MANY RACK AND PINIONS FOR EXPLORERS AND IT IS A PROBLEM BUT HEY CAN ONLY DO WHAT FORD INSTRUCTS. AFTER REVIEW ON THE NHTSA.GOV SITE, THERE ARE OVER 200 COMPLAINTS FOR THE SAME ISSUE WITH THE RACK AND PINION SYSTEM THAT OCCURS FROM 30K TO 60K MILES. THIS IS AN ISSUE THAT IS NOT BEING DEALT WITH BY THE MANUFACTURER AND NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED SINCE MOST OF THESE VEHICLES ARE NOW HITTING THIS MILEAGE RANGE. *TR
