LEAK IN ROOF DUE TO BODY WELD ISSUES. LEAK CAUSED RAIN TO ENTER. 3RD ROW SEATBELT WAS WET, AS WELL AS ELECTRICAL OUTLET IN TRUNK.
OUR EXPLORER HAS ROUGHLY 10K MILES ON IT AND WE PURCHASED IT JAN 2016. WHEN WE ACCELERATE RAPIDLY TO GET UP HILLS OR ON A FREEWAY, WE GET FLOODED WITH AN EXHAUST SMELL THROUGH THE AC VENTS. WE STARTED TO NOTICE THIS ON A FAMILY ROAD TRIP FEB 17, 2017 TO THE ZOO WITH OUR KIDS. THIS HAPPENED WITH OUR 2013 ALSO. THIS CAR IS WAY WORSE AND HAPPENS WITH RAPID ACCELERATION OF 3000-3500 RPM IN TOWN AS WELL. WHEN THIS HAPPENS, WE GET LIGHT HEADED AND MASSIVE INSTANT HEADACHES FROM THE SMELL. WE ARE NOTICING IT HAPPENING NOW IN CITY STREET DRIVING IF WE ARE TRYING TO GET UP A BIG HILL AS WELL AS WHEN WE ACCELERATE TO MERGE ONTO A HIGHWAY. THE SMELL IS GETTING WORSE EACH TIME IT HAPPENS. AS OF LAST WEEK, MY HUSBAND HAS NOTICED WHILE DRIVING NOT ONLY IS THE SMELL GETTING MORE INTENSE BUT IT ISN'T TAKING AS MUCH ACCELERATION FOR IT TO TRIGGER THE SMELL TO FLOOD THE CABIN. HE WAS DRIVING UP A HILL IN TOWN AND ONLY HAD THE RPM AT 2000 AND NOTICED THE SMELL. WE ARE HAVING ISSUES BEING ABLE TO DRIVE AROUND TOWN WITHOUT HAVING THE SMELL FLOOD OUR CABIN. WE HAD ISSUES WITH OUR 2013 DOING THE SAME THING BUT THE 2013 WAS ONLY ON THE HIGHWAY AND NOT AS INTENSE AS THIS CAR. WE ARE STARTING TO EXPERIENCE SYMPTOMS WHEN WE HAVE THIS SMELL COME OUT. WE HAVE TRIED TO TURN OFF AC BUT THAT MADE IT WORSE. WE HAVE THREE SMALL CHILDREN AND THIS IS OUR ONLY FAMILY CAR AND NOW WE ARE SCARED TO DRIVE IT!
EVERY TIME I ACCELERATE AND THE AIR CONDITIONER IS ON RECYCLED AIR, THERE IS A HEAVY ROTTEN EGG/SULFUR SMELL...LIKE EXHAUST. BELIEVE THAT THE EXHAUST (CARBON MONOXIDE) IS COMING INTO THE VEHICLE. I UNDERSTAND I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THIS PROBLEM. I PURCHASED THIS VEHICLE BRAND NEW IN MAY 2016, AND HAVE COMPLAINED TO THE DEALERSHIP, BUT THEY DON'T FIND A PROBLEM. IT HAS HAPPENED EVER SINCE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER IF THIS IS CAUSING ME TO HAVE A HARD TIME BREATHING AT TIMES. HOPING THIS WILL FALL UNDER A RECALL SOON AND IT CAN GET FIXED.
THERE IS AN EXHAUST SMELL PERMEATING THE CABIN IN CITY DRIVING CAUSING DIZZINESS AND THE CABIN GETS FLOODED WITH EXHAUST FUMES UNDER HEAVY ACCELERATION DUE TO MERGING INTO TRAFFIC ON INTERSTATE ON RAMPS OR WHILE PASSING IN ANY DRIVING CONDITION ALL CONTRIBUTING TO DIZZINESS, HEADACHES AND SOMETIMES NAUSEA. EVEN WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER ON AND THE RECIRCULATING AIR FEATURE ENGAGED. SEVERAL TIMES DURING MY DRIVE I NEED TO OPEN THE WINDOW TO AIR OUT MY VEHICLE TO AVOID BECOMING ILL. I'VE HAD IT TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES WITH NO RESOLUTION OF THIS ISSUE AND FORD'S REPLY IS SORRY BUT YOU EXPERIENCE NO MORE THAN WHAT IS ACCEPTABLE LEVELS OF EXHAUST FUMES. THIS IS THE FIRST VEHICLE I'VE OWNED THAT FLOODS THE CABIN WITH EXHAUST FUMES EVEN WITH THE A/C RECIRCULATING THE AIR. THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE SINCE I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE FEBRUARY 2017.
STRONG ODOR OF GAS/EXHAUST IN CAR DURING DRIVING AND AFTER START CONTINUES WHILE DRIVING. UPDATED 06/06/17*LJ *CN
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHILE THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL WAS DEPRESSED, THE CONTACT SMELLED A STRONG ODOR OF FUEL THROUGHOUT THE VEHICLE. THERE WERE NO WARNING INDICATORS ILLUMINATED. THE CONTACT CALLED DON GASGARTH'S CHARLOTTE COUNTY FORD AT (888) 313-9652 WHERE THE DEALER STATED THAT THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED AND THAT IT COULD ONLY BE MINIMIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 7,000.
WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON A CITY STREET I LOST POWER. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR. WHEN I PARKED THE VEHICLE IT WOULD NOT GO IN REVERSE. I HAD TO PUT THE VEHICLE IN NEUTRAL AND GET PUSHED OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO GEAR TO DRIVE HOME. THE VEHICLE HAD TO BE TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP. THE SECOND TIME THIS HAPPENED I WAS ON A 600+ MILE TRIP OUT OF STATE. I WAS DRIVING AT HIGH SPEED ON THE INTERSTATE. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO A DEALERSHIP WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION. THERE SERVICE DEPARTMENT COULD NOT FIT ME IN T LOOK AT IT. I DROVE THE VEHICLE DIRECTLY TO THE DEALERSHIP WHEN I RETURNED HOME. THE THIRD AND FOURTH TIME I WAS 150 MILES FROM HOME. I WAS DRIVING IN HEAVY TRAFFIC ON A 4 LANE HIGHWAY. THE ISSUE ALSO HAPPENED WHEN THE CAR WAS STATIONARY SITTING AT A STOP LIGHT THEN ATTEMPTED TO PROCEED INTO TRAFFIC. I HAVE HAD THE SAME ISSUE 4 TIMES WITHOUT THE "NONCONFORMITY" BEING RESOLVED. I HAVE TAKEN IT INTO THE DEALER 3 TIMES FOR SERVICE. THE VEHICLE HAS BEEN OUT OF SERVICE GREATER THAN 15 DAYS. CARFAX INDICATE THE ELECTRIC THROTTLE BODY WAS REPAIRED A MONTH BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. THAT INFORMATION WAS NOT DISCLOSED TO ME AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE BY THE DEALERSHIP.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS SPEEDS, CARBON MONOXIDE ENTERED INTO THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER VENTS ON MULTIPLE OCCASIONS. THE CONTACT SUFFERED HEADACHES AND FELT A TINGLING SENSATION IN HIS HEAD AFTER EXPOSURE. CORWIN FORD OF KENNEWICK, WASHINGTON WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE VEHICLE COULD NOT BE REPAIRED UNTIL SEPTEMBER 7, 2017. IN ADDITION, THE VEHICLE WAS INSPECTED AND IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT CARBON MONOXIDE LEAKED INTO THE VEHICLE FROM THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE UNDER THE BUMPER WHERE EXHAUST ENTERED FROM TWO OPENINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THERE WAS NO RECALL. THE MANUFACTURER OFFERED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER EQUIPPED WITH HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 TIRES, SIZE: 255/50/R20 (NA). WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED, THE CONTACT BECAME AWARE OF CHUNKS OF TIRE MISSING FROM THE TIRE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A TIRE FACILITY TO BE INSPECTED. THE CONTACT WAS NOT GIVEN A CAUSE FOR THE TIRE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE TIRE AND VEHICLE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 16,000.
2016 FORD EXPLORER PURCHASED JULY 2016. 9800 MILES. TOOK IT IN TO THE DEALER FOR AN OIL CHANGE AND TIRE ROTATION. THEY TOLD US THE TIRES WERE SHOT. HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 H452 255/50R20 105H BSW. THEY ASKED US IF THE CAR HAD EVER GOTTEN STUCK OR IF WE EVER DRIVE ON GRAVEL ROADS. THE CAR HAS NEVER BEEN STUCK BUT WE DO HAVE A GRAVEL DRIVEWAY. THEY OFFERED TO SELL US A NEW SET OF TIRES AND SEND THE OLD TIRES BACK TO HANKOOK FOR ANALYSIS. CALLED FORD CORPORATE AND OPENED A CASE CAS11650061. SAME RESPONSE - BUY A NEW SET OF TIRES AND WE'LL SEND THEM BACK TO HANKOOK FOR ANALYSIS. I FINALLY REVIEWED THE SPECIFICATIONS FOR THESE TIRES: "THE HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 TIRE IS AN ULTRA HIGH PERFORMANCE ALL-SEASON TIRE THAT IS DEVELOPED SPECIFICALLY FOR HIGH END SPORTS CARS AND MAXIMUM HANDLING." NOW I KNOW WHY I'VE BEEN FINDING PIECES OF RUBBER ON MY CONCRETE TURN-AROUND PAD. PARTS OF THE TREAD ARE PEELING OFF. SHAME ON ME FOR NOT DOING THE RESEARCH FIRST, AND SEEING THAT THESE TIRES ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR SERVICE ON A 4WD EXPLORER. SHAME ON FORD FOR SPECIFYING THIS TIRE FOR THIS VEHICLE. I'LL BE BUYING A NEW SET OF TIRES AT MY LOCAL TIRE SHOP. THESE TIRES WILL NOT BE HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 H452 255/50R20 105H BSW TIRES. THESE TIRES WILL BE SUITABLE FOR SERVICE ON A FORD EXPLORER. I CAN'T AFFORD TO BE BUYING A NEW SET OF TIRES EVERY 10K MILES.
WHEN DRIVING ON A HIGHWAY AT APPROXIMATELY 70MPH, I COMPLETELY LOST CONTROL OF MY VEHICLE FOR NO KNOWN REASON. I VEERED ACROSS 3 LANES OF TRAFFIC AND BACK ACROSS 2 MORE. CARS WERE SWERVING AROUND ME AND MIRACULOUSLY I WAS NOT IN AN ACCIDENT. I PULLED OVER TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD AND OTHER CARS TRAVELING BEHIND ME AT THE TIME DID TOO. WE COULDN'T SEE ANY REASON WHY THE CAR WASN'T WORKING PROPERLY SO AFTER CATCHING MY BREATH, I TRIED TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD. I COULD FEEL MY CAR INTERMITTENTLY "SLIPPING". IT FELT AS THOUGH IT WAS LOSING TRACTION AND I WAS LOSING CONTROL AND NOT ABLE TO STEER. I ULTIMATELY PULLED OVER AND CALLED A TOWTRUCK AS I KNEW MY VEHICLE WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. THE TOW TRUCK DRIVER SAW THAT MY REAR TIRES WERE COMPLETELY BALD ONLY ON THE INSIDE. MY CAR HAD 27,000MILES ON IT AT THE TIME. I REPLACED THE BACK 2 TIRES THAT DAY. AND THE FRONT 2 THE FOLLOWING DAY. 2 WEEKS LATER, MY CAR WAS NOT DRIVING PROPERLY AND I BROUGHT IT INTO A LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. THEY PERFORMED A DIAGNOSTIC. THEY TOLD ME MY REAR SUSPENSION WAS A MESS, THE UPPERCONTROL ARM NEEDED TO BE REPLACED, THE BUSHINGS ON MY BACK RIGHT WHEEL WERE LOSE AND HAD A LOT OF PLAY AND THAT NONE OF THIS WAS COVERED UNDER MY B2B WARRANTY BECAUSE THE RIGHT REAR TOW LINK WAS BENT AND THE WEDDINGS WERE LOSE. ALSO, THE TIRES I PUT ON 2 WEEKS AGO WERE STRIPPED BALD ON THE INSIDES AGAIN AND NEEDED TOMBS REPLACED. MY CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. FORD RECALLED 75,000 EXPLORES MADE IN 2014-15 DUE TO FAULTY REAR SUSPENSION FROM IMPROPER WELDING OF TOW LINKS. I BELIEVE MY CAR IS A DEMONSTRATION THAT THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING MANUFACTURER ISSUE WITH THESE VEHICLES AND I WANT TO PROPERLY REPORT IT SO THAT OTHER YOUNG MOTHERS DO NOT HAVE THE SAME DANGEROUS ENCOUNTER THAT I HAD.

THE REAR CARGO DOOR OPENS AND CLOSES UNEXPECTEDLY SOMETIMES WHEN WALKING PAST OR LEANING IN TO REMOVE CARGO. SEVERAL TIMES, IT HAS STRUCK ME ON THE HEAD WHILE LEANING IN AND OFTEN STRIKES MY BACK WHEN LEANING IN. FIRST OF ALL ITS A SECURITY PROBLEM BECAUSE OF NOT NOTICING IT OPENING. ITS DEFINITELY A SAFETY PROBLEM BECAUSE OF THE INADVERTENT CLOSING. THE DEALER HAS BEEN UNABLE TO PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE FIX. I HAVE REQUESTED DISABLING THE SYSTEM BUT WAS TOLD THEY ERE NOT ALLOWED TO DO THAT.
WE TOOK OUR 2016 EXPLORER LIMITED BACK TO THE SHOP FOR THE SECOND TIME AFTER SMELLING EXHAUST IN THE CABIN AGAIN WHILE IN OPERATION. DURING THE FIRST VISIT THE DEALER BEGAN DISCUSSING THE FORD REPAIR BULLETIN THAT CAME OUT 30 DAYS OR SO AGO THAT WAS TO FIX THE EXHAUST LEAK. HOWEVER, AFTER A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER WE RECEIVED A CALL THAT THE BULLETIN HE REFERENCED WAS SPECIFICALLY FOR 2011 THRU 2015". WE WERE TOLD THAT PER THE BULLETIN THE EXHAUST SYSTEM FROM THE ENGINE MANIFOLD TO THE TAIL PIPE GETS REPLACED, A FRESH AIR VENT NEAR THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE GETS "RE-ROUTED" AND THE BUMPER COMES OFF TO GAIN ACCESS TO SOME METAL SEAMS NEEDED TO BE FILLED. OUR SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE STATED HIS HANDS WERE TIED AND COULD NOT DO ANYTHING MORE THAN TAKE IT IN A CHECK IT OUT. THEY CALLED A FOUND THE EXHAUST OUTLETS WERE RECESSED TOO FAR INTO THE BUMPER AND RESET THEM TO THE ORIGINAL POSITION. WE PICKED IT UP MONDAY AND THEN DRIVING IT TUESDAY THIS WEEK A HORRIBLE SMELL CAME TOR THE CABIN AND TOOK MY BREATH AWAY. BLACK SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE EXHAUST PIPE. WE TOOK IT BACK TO THE DEALER YESTERDAY.
WHEN I ACCELERATE MY FORD EXPLORER THE EXHAUST FUMES ARE FILLING THE CABIN, WE ARE EXPERIENCING A ROTTEN EGG ODOR THAT BASICALLY MAKES YOU SICK. I HAVE TAKEN THE VEHICLE TO THE FORD DEALERSHIP 3 TIMES, THEY ATTEMPTED TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM BUT THEY WERE NOT SUCCESSFUL. WE CANNOT USE THE VEHICLE FOR LONG TRIPS LAST TIME WE TRY IT WAS VERY UNCOMFORTABLE, I GOT SICK WITH THE FUMES.
WHILE DRIVING THE CAR ON THE FREEWAY AND UNDER ACELLERATION THERE IS A HORRIBLE EXHAUST SMELL THAT MAKES MY KIDS AND MYSELF NAUTIOUS. IT ALSO GIVES ME CONSTANT HEADACHES. I DIDN'T REALIZE WHAT WAS HAPPENING UNTIL MY HUSBAND GOT IN THE CAR FOR THE FIRST TIME AND NOTICED THE EXHAUST SMELL
BAD SMELL IN CABIN, AFTER WATCHING REPORT ON CBS NEWS WORRIED ABOUT EXHAUST LEAK. HAVE TAKEN IT TO FORD DEALERSHIP AND WE ARE UNABLE TO FIND OR RECREATE THE PROBLEM BUT COME BACK HOME AND THE SMELL/ORDER IS STILL IN CAR. WE NOTICE THE SMELL IN CLOSED AREAS AND AFTER WE PARK THE CAR ON CITY DRIVING. WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF YOUR INVESTAGATION REGARDING THIS ISSUE
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THERE HAD BEEN EXTREMELY STRONG EXHAUST FUMES EMITTING ON THE INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE THAT HAD PROGRESSED. THE DEALER HAD REPLACED THE MUFFLER, PRESSURIZED THE CABIN, INSPECTED THE SEALS AROUND THE REAR OF THE EXHAUST BUT HAD BEEN UNABLE TO DETERMINE IF THE REPAIRS MAY PROVIDE A PERMANENT SOLUTION. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE AND THE CONTACT WAS WAITING TO DETERMINE THEIR SOLUTION TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS NOT AVAILABLE.
BEGINNING IN FEBRUARY 2017, MY 2016 FORD EXPLORER BEGAN TO SMELL LIKE SULFUR OR MOLD WHENEVER I START THE CAR. I SUSPECTED IT WAS AN AC COIL ISSUE, BUT THERE WAS NO PROBLEMS WITH THIS. I WOULD LIKE TO SUBMIT MY COMPLAINT AS PART OF THE ONGOING EXHAUST INVESTIGATION INTO THE FORD EXPLORERS CARBON MONOXIDE ISSUE.
WHEN I PLACE MY EXPLORER IN REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF A PARK, WHEN I AM ABOUT HALF WAY OUT OF THE PARK, THERE'S A LOUD "BUMP". I AUTOMATICALLY SLAM ON BRAKES BECAUSE I THINK I HAVE RAN OVER SOMEONE. RECENTLY, I PLACED MY EXPLORER IN DRIVE SO THAT I COULD PULL OUT OF THE GARAGE AND I HEARD THE LOUD "BUMP". I HAVE TAKEN MY EXPLORER TO THE DEALER SEVERAL TIMES AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS. I HAVE ALSO CONTACTED FORD AND THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS. FORD FINALLY OFFERED A 100K MILE WARRANTY BUT THAT DOESN'T SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING 65 MPH, A STRONG ODOR OF EXHAUST FUMES ENTERED THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO SEVERAL DEALERS INCLUDING EARNHARDT FORD (7300 WEST ORCHID LANE, CHANDLER, ARIZONA 85226 (480) 893-0000), BUT THE SOURCE OF THE FAILURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND REFERRED THE CONTACT TO SAN TAN FORD (1429 EAST MOTORPLEX LOOP, GILBERT, ARIZONA 85297) WHERE THE DEALER ATTEMPTED TO REPAIR THE VEHICLE, BUT COULD NOT FIND THE SOURCE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 7,500.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2016 FORD EXPLORER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ROOF RACK RAIL CLIPS FAILED. THE CLIPS CONSTANTLY DETACHED FROM THE RAILS WHEN DRIVING OR WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS AT A CAR WASH. THE ROOF RAIL CLIPS WERE REPLACED TWICE PER THE WARRANTY, BUT THE REPAIRS DID NOT CORRECT THE FAILURE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TWICE TO MONTROSE FORD OF FAIRLAWN (3960 MEDINA ROAD, FAIRLAWN, OHIO 44333, (330) 666-0711) FOR REPAIRS, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED AND THE ROOF RACK RAIL CLIPS CONTINUED TO DETACH WHEN DRIVING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS CONTACTED AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: CAS25022197K8H8N2. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 15,000.
THROTTLE BODY HAS FAILED TWICE. FIRST TIME AT 7275 ODOMETER; SECOND OCCURRED AT A BIT OVER 16,000 MILES. FAILURE OF THIS PART RESULTS IN NO THROTTLE RESPONSE TO THE ENGINE AND A MAXIMUM OF ABOUT 10MPH SPEED. LUCKILY, BOTH TIMES, I WAS NOT ON THE INTERSTATE OR OTHER HIGH SPEED HIGHWAY. BOTH INSTANCES WERE IN MOTION AT 35-45 MPH. THE ONLY WAY TO CLEAR THE PROBLEM IS TO SHUT THE ENGINE DOWN AND WAIT FOR 1-5 MINUTES; THEN BE PREPARED FOR NO THROTTLE RESPONSE WITHIN A FEW MILES.

WE MADE A 2 HOUR TRIP, AND AFTER BEING IN THE CAR THAT LONG, I HAD A BAD HEADACHE AND FELT NAUSEATED FROM THE FUMES. I AM THE MAIN DRIVER OF THE CAR AND IT IS MY SOLE SOURCE OF TRANSPORTATION. EVER SINCE WE PURCHASED THE CAR BACK IN JANUARY OF 2017, I STARTED GETTING BAD HEADACHES AND HAVE THEN ON A REGULAR BASIS. I'M STARTING TO THINK THEY ARE COMING FROM THIS CAR. WE ORIGINALLY THOUGHT THE SMELL WAS JUST THE NEW WEARING OR THE ENGINE BREAKING IN, BUT AFTER A FEW THOUSAND MILES IT WAS EVIDENT SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT. I KNOW ALL EXPLORERS DON'T HAVE THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I PREVIOUSLY HAD A 2013 EXPLORER AS A COMPANY VEHICLE IDENTICAL TO THIS ONE AND IT NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM. THE DEALERSHIP FINALLY TOLD ME TO COME GET THE VEHICLE BECAUSE THEY HAVE DONE EVERYTHING FORD TOLD THEM TO DO TO FIX IT. THEY SAID I WILL HAVE TO TAKE IT UP WITH FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE. I JUST GOT BACK MY VEHICLE FROM THE DEALERSHIPS SERVICE CENTER AND ACCORDING TO THEIR FINDING THEIR WAS AN ISSUE WITH THE VEHICLES STARTER. I DROVE HOME PARKED THE CAR IN THE GARAGE THEN TURNED OFF THE IGNITION. THE VEHICLE WOULD TURN OFF, SO I PUSHED THE START BUTTON AGAIN BUT STILL DID NOT TURN OFF THEN SECONDS LATER I SMELL SMOKE. I IMMEDIATELY BACKED UP TO HAVE THE CAR OUTSIDE THE GARAGE . I HIT THE START BUTTON AGAIN TO TURN OFF AND THIS TIME THE ENGINE SHUT DOWN. HEAVY SMOKE WAS COMING OUT OF THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT SO I JUST STOOD AT A DISTANCE . 10-30 MINUTES LATER AS THE SMOKE SUBSIDED I DECIDED TO POP THE HOOD OPEN AND STILL THERE'S SMOKE FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. THE CONTACT PURCHASED A CARBON DIOXIDE MONITOR THAT INDICATED THAT THE AIR CONDITIONING WAS RELEASING CARBON DIOXIDE. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER WHO WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT RESEARCHED AND FOUND THE ISSUE HAD OCCURRED IN MANY FORD EXPLORERS. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000.

THEY COULD NOT PINPOINT THE ISSUE BUT TOLD US OF SIMILAR ISSUE WITH EXHAUST ON 2012-2014 AND 15 MODELS BUT THAT FORD HAD NOT MENTIONED ANYTHING ABOUT 2016. PLANNED TO TAKE VEHICLE BACK A WEEK LATER BUT IT DID NOT REOCCUR SO WE DECIDED IT MUST HAVE BEEN BECAUSE IT WAS NEW AND SOMETHING BURNED OFF LIKE AN OIL. SINCE THAT TIME I HAVE NOTICED MAYBE 1 OR 2 TIMES WHERE THERE WAS A SLIGHT SMELL BUT NOTHING ALARMING. THE EXPLORER WAS PURCHASED IN NOV 2016. AT THE TIME OF TAKING TO FORD STORE, AROUND 3K MILES. THE TRANSMISSION DRAIN PLUGS WERE LOOSE. THE VEHICLE HAS 5064 MILES. I HAD BEEN NOTICING AN ODOR AND THOUGHT I HAD A COOLANT LEAK. BUT THE SMELL WAS NOT "SWEET" ENOUGH. I CRAWLED UNDER THE CAR AFTER A 700 MILE TRIP BECAUSE THE ORDER WAS VERY PREVALENT. I NOTICE TRANSMISSION FLUID ON ONE OF THE TRANSMISSION DRAIN PLUGS. THERE WAS A PLUME OF TRANSMISSION FLUID GOING FROM THE TRANSMISSION TO THE BACK OF THE CAR. SOME OF THE FLUID HAD CONTACTED THE EXHAUST COMPONENTS. I CHECK THE FLUID LEVEL ( FLAT SURFACE, ENGINE HOT AND RUNNING) AND THE FLUID DID NOT EVEN CONTACT THE DIP STICK. I THEN WENT TO SEE IF THE PLUG(S) WAS LOOSE. IT IS A 11MM. I WAS ABLE TO GET 2.5 TURNS ON THE PLUG USING JUST MY FINGERS. ON THE SECOND PLUG I WAS ABLE TO GET 1 FULL TURN WITH JUST MY FINGERS. THE 1ST PLUG ONLY HAD ABOUT 3 THREADS ENGAGED. I AM CONCERNED THAT IF OTHER VEHICLES HAVE THIS CONDITION, A FIRE OR COMPLETE LOSE OF TRANSMISSION FLUID COULD OCCUR. IF A PLUG FALLS OUT WHILE TRAVELING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS A SERIOUS ACCIDENT COULD OCCUR.

CALLED DEALERSHIP, WE WERE 260 MILES AWAY, THEY SAID IT WAS AN EASY FIX, WAS TOLD TO TURN OFF RECYCLE FOR OUR TRIP BACK. TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALERSHIP. THEY WERE AWARE OF THE PROBLEM AND USED TSB FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM. I TALKED TO THE FINANCE MANAGER AND HE SAID HE WAS IN THE PROCESS OF BACKING OUT A DEAL BECAUSE OF THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM AND WHEN ASKED IF THEY COULDN'T FIX IT WHAT WOULD HAPPEN? I WAS TOLD THEY'D HAVE TO GET US INTO SOMETHING ELSE. THE FIX WAS TO RE-CALIBRATED THE RECYCLE SWITCH TO TURN OFF UPON HEAVY ACCELERATION. THE PROBLEM IS WE LIVE IN ARIZONA, TO USE MAX AC, THE RECYCLE FEATURE HAS TO BE ON. TOOK VEHICLE BACK TO DEALERSHIP FOR THIS PROBLEM AND OTHER ITEMS NEEDING FIXED. WAS INFORMED BY DEALERSHIP SERVICE WRITER, HE HAD CONTACTED FORD TECH, CURRENTLY THERE'S NO FIX FOR THE KNOWN PROBLEM. PURCHASED A CO TESTER. ACCELERATING (65 TO 75MPH) UP STEEP INCLINES AND ON SOME LOWER INCLINES AT HIGHER SPEED AND PASSING, TESTED WITH METER AND HAD READINGS FROM 29PPM TO 112PPM. AT TIMES STAYING AT 34PPM. MY WIFE HAS TO TRAVEL 120 MILES ROUND TRIP, ON A WEEKLY BASIS, THAT INCLUDES THE INCLINES WHERE TEST RESULTS WERE PERFORMED. SHE PICKS UP OUR 3 GRANDCHILDREN FROM THERE AND ALSO TRANSPORTS HER 84 YEAR OLD MOTHER TO AND FROM THE HEART AND PULMONARY SPECIALIST AT THE HOSPITAL AT THAT LOCATION. MY WIFE ALSO HAS A HEART CONDITION. EXPOSURE TO THESE CARBON MONOXIDE FUMES ARE UNACCEPTABLE. I HAVE PHOTOS OF THE DETECTOR WITH VARIABLE READINGS. THERE SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY NO CARBON MONOXIDE COMING INTO THE CAB OF ANY VEHICLE FOR ANY LENGTH OF TIME. IT IS ESPECIALLY DANGEROUS TO MY FAMILIES HEALTH, EVEN IN SMALL AMOUNTS. FORD NEEDS TO BUY THIS HEALTH HAZARD BACK AND PERFORM A RECALL. WE ARE HEADED TO THE DEALERSHIP[ TOMORROW TO COMPLAIN ONCE AGAIN.
