TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS HIGH SPEEDS OR WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IDLING, THERE WAS A ROTTEN EGG ODOR ENTERING THROUGH THE VENTS OF THE VEHICLE. THE ODOR WAS PRESENT WHILE THE AIR CONDITIONER WAS IN USE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE FOUR OCCUPANTS IN THE VEHICLE EXPERIENCED BREATHING DIFFICULTY, LIGHT HEADACHES, NAUSEA, AND BLURRED VISION, WHICH REQUIRED MEDICAL ATTENTION. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO GRIECO FORD (3000 S FEDERAL HWY, DELRAY BEACH, FL 33483), BUT THE CAUSE OF THE FAILURE WAS UNDETERMINED. THE DEALER STATED THAT THE ODOR FAILURE WAS RELEVANT TO POLICE VEHICLES AND NOT NON-POLICE SUVS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 9,000.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 FORD EXPLORER. WHILE DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 30 MPH, THE CONTACT HEARD AN EXPLOSION COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE THEN STALLED WITHOUT WARNING. IN ADDITION, THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE CONTROL ARM DETACHED, WHICH CAUSED THE PASSENGER TIRE TO EXPLODE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A TOWING LOT. THE VEHICLE WAS LATER TAKEN TO PENSKE FORD COLLISION CENTER (8970 LA MESA BLVD, LA MESA, CA 91942, (619) 464-7777) WHERE IT WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOTIFIED AND STATED THAT THEY WERE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAILURE AND ADVISED THE CONTACT TO "WORK IT OUT THE BEST HE COULD". NO FURTHER ASSISTANCE WAS OFFERED. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 11,000.
IT HAS BEEN JUST OVER 1 YEAR DRIVING THIS VEHICLE, 8115 MILES CURRENTLY. A FEW DAYS AGO WHILE WALKING AROUND MY CAR, I NOTICED CHIPPING, CRACKING, & PEELING AWAY OF THE TREAD ON MY TIRES. IT DOES NOT LOOK NORMAL AND NOT TOO SURE IF IT IS SAFE TO CONTINUE TO DRIVE. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL FORD DEALER WHERE WE LEASED IT FROM AND THEY CLAIMED THAT IT IS NORMAL TIRE WEAR FOR HAWAII ROADS. I DONT THINK SO. I HAVE OWNED SEVERAL VEHICLES OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AND HAVE NEVER SEEN THIS BEFORE. THE VEHICLE HAS NEVER BEEN OFF-ROAD, PULLED A HEAVY LOAD, OR DRIVEN AGGRESSIVELY, AND IS IN IMMACULATE CONDITION OTHERWISE. THE VEHICLE WAS JUST IN FOR SERVICE JUST OVER 1 MONTH AGO SO I AM NOT SURE HOW THIS WAS NOT CAUGHT IN THE MULTI-POINT INSPECTION OR THE TIRE ROTATION THEY SUPPOSEDLY DID.
EXTREMELY SHARP METAL TABS STICK OUT NEARLY 1" FROM THE INBOARD SIDE OF BOTH DRIVER AND PASSENGER SEATS. TABS ARE INTENDED TO HOLD PLASTIC TABS ON SEAT COVERS HOWEVER BOTH OF MINE WERE NOT INSTALLED PROPERLY OR HAD COME OFF IN THE 6 MONTHS WE'D OWNED THE VEHICLE. THIS TAB CUT MY HAND WIDE OPEN AND CUT TENDONS WHILE REACHING FOR MY KEYS THAT HAD DROPPED. SURGERY WAS REQUIRED. A FRIEND WHO OWNS A 2016 EXPLORER CONFIRMED THESE SHARP TABS AS WELL. THIS SHARP METAL TAB IS LIKE A KNIFE AND I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THIS PROBLEM CORRECTED FLEETWIDE (FILING DOWN THE EDGES WOULD BE A VERY SIMPLE FIX) TO ENSURE OTHERS AREN'T MAIMED LIKE I WAS. IT'S NOT UNREASONABLE TO SEE HOW SOMEONE COULD CUT A WRIST WITH A RISK TO LIFE.
OUR FIRST ROAD TRIP IN THIS VEHICLE WAS NOVEMBER 23, 2017. WE DROVE ABOUT 300 MILES SOUTH TO GALVESTON, TX. ON THE WAY BACK HOME, I WAS DRIVING , WHEN WE GOT TO ABOUT HOUSTON, I TOLD MY HUSBAND I NEEDED TO PULL OVER AND LET HIM DRIVE, AS I DIDN'T FEEL GOOD AND FELT LIKE I WAS GOING TO PASS OUT. HE DROVE THE REST OF THE WAY BACK HOME. I WAS THINKING MAYBE I WAS GETTING SICK OR COMING DOWN WITH SOME KIND OF BUG. I JUST FELT ALWAYS DIZZY AND LIGHT HEADED. I STARTED TO GET A STRANGE FEELING MY HEAD, A STRANGE TIGHTNESS'I THEN GOT CONCERNED. I WENT TO MY DOCTOR ON DECEMBER 27 TO FIND OUT WHAT HE THOUGHT IT MAY BE. I JUST FELT SO WEIRD AND FUNNY. I CONTINUE TO GO THROUGHOUT JANUARY AND MY DOCTOR TELLING ME I NEEDED TO GET A MRI ON MY BRAIN BECAUSE I COULDN'T SHAKE WHATEVER I HAD. THE STRANGE FEELING OF DIZZINESS WAS ALWAYS THERE. I TOOK OFF MANY DAYS FROM WORK AS I WOULD START TO DRIVE INTO WORK ABOUT AN HOUR AWAY AND KEPT FEELING SO DIZZY THAT I COULDN'T DRIVE. I KEPT TELLING MY DOCTOR WHEN I WAS IN MY CAR DRIVING THAT I FELT THE WORSE. I THOUGHT PERHAPS IT WAS SOME KIND OF MOTION TYPE OF SICKNESS LIKE VERTIGO. HE TESTED ME FOR MANY THINGS LIKE THAT AND AFTER MY MRI CAME BACK FINE'I STILL WAS HAVING ISSUES. AFTER MANY TESTS, MEDICINES AND ALL AND NEVER FINDING ANYTHING THAT WOULD MAKE IT BETTER, I DIDN'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO. I JUST KNEW I HAD FELT WEIRD AND DIZZY SINCE OUR ROAD TRIP TO GALVESTON. I HAD NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT CARBON MONOXIDE UNTIL A FRIEND OF MINE AND I WAS TALKING ABOUT THIS WEIRD FEELING I KEPT HAVING. SHE TOLD ME THAT I NEEDED TO TAKE MY CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP AND HAVE IT TESTED. MYSELF AND MY FAMILY HAVE BEEN SMELLING A SMELL EVERY TIME I WOULD DRIVE. I TOOK MY CAR IN MAY 8TH, 2018 TO THE DEALERSHIP AND GUESS WHAT'..IT HAS A FORD CUSTOMER SERVICE PROGRAM 17N03 ON THE CARBON MONOXIDE! THEY SAY THEY WANT TO FIX THE ISSUE THAT REALLY ISN'T AN ISSUE?!
THERE'S EXHAUST FUME IN THE CABIN AFTER HARD ACCELERATION(RPM WAS AROUND 5000). AND MY FAMILY SUFFERED A SEVERE HEADACHE AFTER 90 MINUTES DRIVING INCLUDED MY 12 MONTHS OLD BABY. MY CAR HAS ALREADY BEEN REPAIRED TWICE IN FORD, BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN RESOLVED.
HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBEL 2 SIZE 255/50R20 105H DOT 5MNC 1A H 1916 THESE TIRES HAVE 16,940 MILES (13 MONTHS SINCE BOUGHT IT) ON THEM AND CAME OEM ON 2017 FORD EXPLORER. THE TIRE TREAD IS PEELING AND SHREDDING. PREMATURE WEAR. I TOOK IT TO FORD AND THEY SAID THAT A SERVICE MESSAGE (SSM 46905) RELATIVE TO 2015-2018 EXPLORER- HANKOOK TIRES- CHIPPING, CUTTING AND/OR UNUSUAL/ACCELERATED TREAD WEAR. THE MESSAGE STATES " SOME 2015-2018 EXPLORER VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH HANKOOK BRAND TIRES MAY EXHIBIT CHIPPING,CUTTING AND/OR UNUSUAL OR EVEN ACCELERATED TREAD WEAR.IF THE SIZE WALL IS MARKED AS:255/50R20 105H VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2CONTACT HANKOOK TECHNICAL SERVICES". THE DEALER DID AND HANKOOK KNOWS ABOUT THE ISSUE BUT ONLY OFFERED A 50% DISCOUNT ON NEW TIRES AS A CORRECTIVE MEASURE. SO BASICALLY THEY SOLD BAD TIRES AN THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PAY TO FIX THE PROBLEM.
I BOUGHT A 2017 FORD EXPLORER FOR MY DAUGHTER TO DRIVE BACK AND FORTH TO COLLEGE. SHE HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING DIZZINESS, HEADACHES AND NEARLY PASSED OUT AFTER DRIVING THE VEHICLE. WHEN I GET IN THE VEHICLE AND START IT UP, IT SMELLS LIKE EXHAUST INSIDE THE VEHICLE. THERE IS OBVIOUSLY A PROBLEM.
OUR 2017 FORD EXPLORER WAS INVOLVED IN A BAD ACCIDENT. WE WERE STRUCK ON THE DRIVER SIDE WHILE MAKING A LEFT TURN. THE STRIKE OCCURRED AT THE LEFT FRONT WHEEL BACK TO THE DRIVERS DOOR. TRAVELING RATE OF SPEED OF THE STRIKING VEHICLE WAS APPROX. 50MPH. THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER ADVISED THE CAR IS A TOTAL LOSS. MY CONCERN IS WHILE WE WALKED AWAY WITH MINIMAL INJURY, NOT ONE AIRBAG IN THE CAR WENT OFF. THE ADJUSTER ADVISED THAT AT THE VERY LEAST THE SIDE IMPACT BAGS SHOULD HAVE GONE OFF. WANTING TO GET ANOTHER EXPLORER BUT AM CONCERNED THAT THE SAFETY SYSTEM DOES NOT FUNCTION AS IT IS DESIGNED TO.
2017 FORD EXPLORER ECOBOOST WITH APPROXIMATELY 8800 MILES STARTED MAKING A WHINNING NOISE FROM THE TRANSMISSION. NOTICED MAKING RIGHT TURNS THE TRANSMISSION FELT LIKE IT WOULD DISENGAGE AND ABRUPTLY ENGAGE AS IF THROWN IN NEUTRAL THEN SLAMMED INTO DIRIVE. TAKING OFF FROM LIGHT WOULD DO SIMILAR ISSUE. IN A COUPLE OF EVENTS, VEHICLE WOULD NOT MOVE AND WAS IN TURNING LANE WITH TRAFFIC APPROACHING ALMOST CAUSING TO GET T BONED. EXPLORER HAS BEEN AT THE DEALER AND TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SERVICED TWICE WITH THE TRANSMISSION SKIPPING GEARS OR SHIFTING NORMAL UNTIL A STOP AND ENGAGES 5TH GEAR, STAYS STUCK IN 5TH GEAR.
I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT ON THE HIGHWAY TO MAKE A LEFT. ONCE LIGHT CHANGED, I STEPPED ON THE GAS AND THE CAR WOULDN'T MOVE. I THEN HEARD A LOUD "THUMP" AND THOUGHT I'D BEEN HIT FROM THE REAR. WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED WAS THE TRANSMISSION, SLAMMED INTO GEAR AND PROCEEDED TO MOVE AT ABOUT 2-3 MPH. IT NEVER REGAINED SPEED. AS I MADE MY TURN, I WAS STUCK ON ANOTHER MAJOR ROAD AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND I PLACED IN NEUTRAL AND HEARD THE LOUD "THUMP" AGAIN AS THE TRANS SHIFTED INTO NEUTRAL. ONCE THE TRAFFIC LIGHT CHANGED, I PUT THE VEHICLE BACK INTO "DRIVE" AND YET AGAIN, A LOUD "THUMP" AS IT SLAMMED INTO DRIVE. VEHICLE AGAIN PROCEEDED TO MOVE AT A SNAILS PACE, AT ABOUT 2-3 MPH. FINALLY ON THE DASH I GOT A "WRENCH" LIGHT AND THE ENGINE LIGHT COME ON AS WELL. I PULLED OVER ON A SIDE STREET AND TURNED THE VEHICLE OFF. I WAITED A FEW MINUTES, TURNED THE VEHICLE BACK ON AND WHEN I SHIFTED INTO REVERSE, NEUTRAL AND THEN DRIVE, THE TRANSMISSION SLAMMED INTO GEAR ON EACH OF THEM VERY HARD. I PROCEEDED TO TURN THE VEHICLE OFF AND CALL A TOW SERVICE TO HAVE THE VEHICLE DROPPED OFF AT THE DEALERSHIP. MIGHT I ADD THAT THIS IS A 2017 FORD EXPLORER WITH ONLY 1045 MILES....THIS IS A NEW VEHICLE!!!!!
CARBON MONOXIDE EMISSIONS IN AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM
ON 10/31/17 WHILE OUT WITH MY CHILDREN TRICK-OR-TREATING, THE LIFTGATE ON MY LEASED 2017 FORD EXPLORER BECAME "STUCK" IN AN UPRIGHT POSITION AND WOULD NOT CLOSE ELECTRONICALLY OR MANUALLY. MY FAMILY AND I HAD PULLED OVER AND PARKED IN A RESIDENTIAL AREA TO GET ITEMS OUT FROM THE REAR STORAGE AREA. I HAD OPENED THE HATCH WITH THE ELECTRONIC SWITCH AND THE DOOR STOPPED ABOUT 2/3 OF THE WAY UP. AS THIS HAD HAPPENED TO ME PREVIOUSLY, I FOLLOWED THE MANUAL DIRECTIONS TO SET THE LIFTGATE OPEN HEIGHT. WE FINISHED GETTING OUR ITEMS OUT OF THE VEHICLE AND PRESSED THE CONTROL BUTTON TO CLOSE. IT WAS AT THIS POINT THAT THE LIFTGATE--NOW AT MAXIMUM HEIGHT--SIMPLY MADE "WHIRRING" SOUNDS AND WOULD NOT CLOSE. DESPITE REFERENCING THE OWNER'S MANUAL, CALLING FORD ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE AND SCOURING THE INTERNET FOR POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS, ALL ATTEMPTS TO BYPASS THE ELECTRONIC SYSTEM/MOTOR AND MANUALLY CLOSE THE DOOR WERE UNSUCCESSFUL. I WAS FORCED TO DRIVE MY FAMILY HOME WITH THE REAR LIFTGATE PRECARIOUSLY LEFT WIDE OPEN. THE NEXT DAY I WAS ADVISED BY MY LEASING COMPANY TO HAVE A TOW TRUCK PICK THE VEHICLE FOR SAFETY REASONS. THE TOW DRIVER WAS SHOCKED AT THIS ODD MALFUNCTION AND EXPRESSED CONCERN TRANSPORTING THE VEHICLE AS ROAD BUMPS COULD POTENTIALLY CAUSE EXCESSIVE BOUNCING AND PERMANENT DAMAGE. WE DETACHED THE LIFT ARMS HOLDING UP THE REAR GATE SO AS TO CLOSE THE DOOR--ONLY TO FIND THAT THE REAR HATCH STILL WOULD NOT FULLY CLOSE. THE REPORT FROM THE FORD DEALERSHIP HERE IN PHOENIX WAS SIMPLY THAT THE "LIFTGATE WOULD NOT CLOSE MANUALLY DUE TO THE MOTOR BINDING." THEY SUBSEQUENTLY REPLACED THE MOTOR AND NOTED THE "SYSTEM IS NOW WORKING AS DESIGNED AT THIS TIME." I ASKED MY ADVISOR IF THERE WAS A MANUAL OVERRIDE FOR THIS AND HE SAID "NO." I BELIEVE THAT FORD SHOULD CONDUCT A SAFETY RECALL OF THESE LIFTGATE COMPONENTS AND ENGINEER A MANUAL OVERRIDE FOR WHEN THEY GO OUT.
HAVE THE CARBON MONOXIDE SMELL INSIDE MY SUV. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALERSHIP IN OCT. AND WAS TOLD PARTS WERE BACKORDERED TO DEC. FORD RUSHED IN PARTS AND REPLACED A LIST OF THINGS. THAT FIX FAILED AND STILL HAVE THE SAME ISSUE WITH NO ETA ON WHEN IT WILL BE LOOKED AT AGAIN. FORD REFUSES TO TAKE THE SUV IN AGAIN AND FORD REFUSES TO TALK ABOUT THIS ISSUE. I DO TRAVEL FOR PERSONAL USE AND HAVE HAD THE STRONG ODER INSIDE AND HAVE HAD BAD HEADACHES AND DROWSINESS. I GET THE ODER DRIVING, TAKING OFF FROM STOPS OR GETTING ON THE FREEWAY/INTERSTATE.
HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBEL 2 SIZE 255/50R20 DOT 5MNC 1A H 1216 THESE TIRES HAVE 12,200 MILES ON THEM AND CAME OEM ON 2017 FORD EXPLORER. THE TIRE TREAD IS PEELING AND SHREDDING. PREMATURE WEAR. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AS OTHERS ARE REPORTING THE SAME EXACT PROBLEM ON THE SAME VEHICLE.
THE SUBJECT VEHICLE HAS APPROXIMATELY 12,200 MILES ON OEM SUPPLIED HANKOOK VENTUS S1 NOBLE 2 TIRES. SIZE 255/50R20. TREAD IS PEELING OFF AND PREMATURE WEAR. 50K MILE RATED TIRE IS AT 5/32 @ APPROX. 12200 MILES WITH SCHEDULED ROTATION PERFORMED. FORD DEALER AND HANKOOK REP HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED HANKOOK IS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH THESE TIRES ON THIS VEHICLE. PLEASE INVESTIGATE THE SAFETY OF THESE TIRES. SEE ATTACHED PHOTO OF PEELED TREAD.
MY VEHICLE HAS ABOUT 19,000 MILES AND THE TIRES ARE ABOUT BALD. TOOK MY LOCAL DEALER AND THEY ARE TELLING ME THAT FORD WILL NOT ADDRESS THE ISSUE. THIS VEHICLE CANNOT GO THROUGH ANOTHER WINTER. MANY COMPLAINTS ON LINE ABOUT THIS SAME ISSUE WITH HANKOOK TIRES ON FORD EXPLORERS. HANKOOK OR FORD NEED TO STEP UP BEFORE MAJOR PROBLEMS OCCCUR. SHOULD NOT HAVE TO BE REPLACING TIRES THAT ARE RATED FOR 50,000 MILES WHEN THEY ARE UNDER 20,000. HAVE MAINTAINED THIS VEHICLE REGULARLY WITH CORRECT TIRE PRESSURE AND TIRE ROTATIONS. I HAVE BEEN ATTEMPTING TO RESOLVE THIS ISSUE WITH MY DEALER FOR SEVERAL MONTHS WHEN I NOTICED UNUSUALLY EXTENSIVE WEAR.
DRIVING DOWN A DIRT TRAIL FROM A MOUNTAIN OUTLOOK THE CARS ELECTRICAL SHUT OFF. WE HAD NO CONTROL OF BRAKES, OR ANYTHING BUT STEARING. NOT TO MENTION WE WERE PICKING UP MAJOR SPEED DOWN A MOUNTAIN, AND BOUNCING EVERYWHERE. WE HAD TO SWERVE BACK AND FORTH, HITTING BUSHES AND SEMI DRIVING UP THE SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN TO TRY AND SLOW DOWN. OUR WHOLE FAMILY WAS IN THE CAR, INCLUDING A TWO MONTH OLD AND A THREE YEAR OLD. THE ONLY WAY WE GOT IT TO WORK AGAIN WAS SLAMMING THE SHIFTER INTO NEUTRAL AND THEN PUSHING THE RESTART BUTTON, BUT IT WAS PROBABLY JUST OUR PRAYERS THAT GOT THE CAR TO TURN BACK ON AND GIVE US BRAKE CONTROL AGAIN. I'M AFRAID TO DRIVE MY CAR IN FEAR OF IT HAPPENING AGAIN.

EXHAUST CAN BE EASILY SMELLED WHEN ACCELERATING, POSSIBLY INDICATING A LEAK OF CARBON MONOXIDE INTO THE CABIN.
CAR SMELLS LIKE ROTTEN EGGS FROM THE OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE. I NOTICED A SLIGHT ODOR IN THE TRUNK AREA, BUT IT'S MOSTLY COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE VEHICLE.
EXHAUST IS ENTERING THE VEHICLE AND MAKING MYSELF AND MY 2.5 YEAR OLD SON SICK. I IMMEDIATELY GET A HEADACHE WHEN DRIVING AND FEEL NAUSEOUS, EXTREME FATIGUE, BODY AND MUSCLE ACHES, MEMORY ISSUES, CONFUSION, AND I'VE BEEN COUGHING UP BROWN MUCOUS WHICH IS LINKED TO THE INHALATION OF HAZARDOUS POLLUTION AND GASES. THESE SYMPTOMS LAST LONG AFTER I AM FINISHED DRIVING MY CAR AND HAVEN'T GONE AWAY FOR MORE THAN FOUR DAYS. MY SON IS HAVING THE SAME SYMPTOMS AND IT MAKES ME NERVOUS BECAUSE EXPOSURE TO THESE GASES WILL HINDER HIS NEURODEVELOPMENT. IT IS DIFFICULT TO SAY WHEN THE GAS IS ENTERING THE CAR, BUT I OPENED MY SUNROOF WHILE DRIVING THIS MORNING WITH THE WINDOWS UP AND THE A/C ON AND I COULD SMELL A NATURAL GAS SMELL AND I FELT THE EFFECTS OF INHALING THE GAS IMMEDIATELY. THE GAS WAS ESCAPING THROUGH THE SUNROOF AND RIGHT BY MY HEAD.
EXHAUST SMELL.....ROTTEN EGGS OR SULFER SMELL WHILE ACCELERATING WITH THE A/C ON IN RECIRCULATE SO I KNOW ITS NOT FROM OUTSIDE VEHICLES

EXHAUST FUME LEAKS INTO PASSENGER CABIN - PROBLEM SINCE PURCHASING THIS VEHICLE NEW THIS SPRING; ANYTIME WHEN ACCELERATING TO MERGE INTO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC WITH RECIRCULATING AC ON A BURNING OIL OR ACRID ODOR LEAKS INTO THE CABIN. IN AN ATTEMPT TO FIX THE PROBLEM THE LOCAL FORD DEALER 'RESEALED" THE UNDERCARRIAGE, HOWEVER THE PROBLEM PERSIST. ON A RECENT 400 MILE ROAD TRIP WITH RECIRCULATING AC ON PASSENGER AND DRIVER GOT VERY DROWSY, WINDOWS HAD TO BE OPENED, RECIRCULATING AC TURNED OFF AND STOPS MADE TO SHAKE OFF THE EFFECTS. MY PREVIOUS 2013 FORD EXPLORER HAD THE SAME EXHAUST PROBLEM BUT NEVER LIKE THIS. WHEN I PURCHASED THIS NEW MODEL I TOOK IT ON FAITH THE "PROBLEM" WOULDN'T AFFECT THE 2017S. THE NOISE SOUNDS LIKE IT IS COMING FROM THE FRONT PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE NOISE IS ALSO RANDOM AND DESPITE EFFORTS TO INTENTIALLY DUPLICATE NOISE, IT APPEARS TO HAPPEN RANDOMLY. I RENTED THE REFERENCED VEHICLE FROM ENTERPRISE RENTAL CAR FOR 1 WEEK. DROVE APPROXIMATELY 2000 MILES. THIS 2017 VEHICLE HAD APPROXIMATELY 20,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER WHEN I RENTED IT. I BELIEVE THAT THE ENGINE WAS THE 3.5 LITER VERSION. EVERY TIME I ACCELERATED HARD, SUCH AS ENTERING ON THE INTERSTATE, I COULD SUBSEQUENTLY SMELL A VERY STRONG EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR OF THE SUV. I ALSO NOTICED WHEN I RENTED THE VEHICLE THAT ALL THE WINDOWS AND SURFACES HAD A FILM ON THEM - PERHAPS RESIDUE FROM EXHAUST GASES. I AM A 54 YEAR OLD RETIRED ENGINEER AND HAVE OWNED AND RENTED OVER 25 VEHICLES IN MY LIFETIME AND FIND WHAT I EXPERIENCED WITH THE EXPLORER TO BE VERY UNUSUAL. I ALSO FOUND THAT I WAS SLEEPIER THAN NORMAL WHEN DRIVING PERHAPS DUE TO CO2 EXPOSURE. ALL OF MY PASSENGERS ALSO EXPERIENCED UNUSUAL SLEEPINESS. THE EXHAUST SMELL IN THE INTERIOR WAS UNDENIABLE. I FIND IT VERY DISTURBING THAT FORD IS TRYING TO EXPLAIN THIS AS A PROBLEM WITH ONLY THE POLICE INTERCEPTOR EXPLORERS DUE TO AFTER MARKET MODIFICATIONS. MY EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THIS IS A COMPLETELY FALSE AND MISLEADING EXPLANATION. I AM VERY PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE NHTSA IS DOING AN EA ON THE PROBLEM. FORD HAS IGNORED THIS PROBLEM FOR YEARS AND THE PROBLEM IS VERY REAL. THE DETECTOR IS A GLUI CIGARETTE-LIGHTER POWERED DEVICE W/ TWO USB PORTS (HTTPS://WWW.AMAZON.COM/GP/PRODUCT/B01G2YJ3ZU) AND HAS BEEN INSTALLED IN THE CENTER CONSOLE CIGARETTE LIGHTER (FACING THE SECOND ROW SEATS) SINCE MID MAY. NO OTHER TIME HAS THIS ALARM WENT OFF. AT THE TIME OF THE ALARM THE DETECTOR WAS PARTIALLY COVERED WITH SOME FABRIC FROM A BAG AND THE DETECTOR WAS WARM TO THE TOUCH. WE WERE CAMPING IN A PLACE WITH NO CELL SERVICE SO WE DID NOT GET A CHANCE TO CONTACT FORD/NHTSA. WE DROVE HOME W/ THE WINDOWS OPEN. AFTER COMING BACK HOME I TRIED INTENTIONALLY SETTING OFF THE CO ALARM WITH A CAN OF CO. AFTER WARMING UP THE DETECTOR BY LETTING THE CAR RUN I SPRAYED CO INTO THE DETECTOR BUT I WAS UNABLE TO GET THE ALARM TO GO OFF AGAIN. IT IS UNCLEAR TO ME WHETHER THIS WAS A FALSE ALARM FROM THE DETECTOR OR A LEGITIMATE ISSUE WITH C0 EMISSIONS IN THE VEHICLE. CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTED IN PASSENGER CABIN - AFTER READING STORIES ABOUT POSSIBLE PROBLEMS WITH CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) IN 2016 FORD EXPLORERS IN MID JULY 2017 I PURCHASED A KIDDE BATTERY POWERED CO DETECTOR AND INSTALLED IT IN THE REAR AREA OF THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. IT HAD NOT ALARMED UNTIL WE WERE TRAVELING FROM SENECA, SC TO INDIANAPOLIS, IN. WE WERE TOWING AN 8X5 ENCLOSED U-HAUL TRAILER AT NORMAL FREEWAY SPEEDS. TOW/HAUL WAS ENGAGED BECAUSE WE WERE TOWING AND THE ENGINE WAS GENERALLY RUNNING AT HIGHER RPM'S, ESPECIALLY GOING UP THE MOUNTAIN INCLINES. THE CO DETECTOR FIRST ALARMED WEST OF ASHVIILLE, NC. SUDDENLY THE HEADACHES AND DROWSINESS BOTH MY WIFE AND I WERE EXPERIENCING MADE SENSE. WE OPENED THE WINDOWS AND THE ALARM STOPPED AFTER A COUPLE MINUTES. AFTER THIS HAPPENED 3-4 TIMES I MOVED THE DETECTOR TO THE FRONT OF THE PASSENGER CABIN SO THAT I COULD MONITOR THE PART PER MILLION DISPLAY. WE FOUND THAT IT ONLY TOOK 15-20 MINUTES OF HIGHWAY DRIVING FOR THE DETECTOR TO DISPLAY 31PPM, THE DETECTORS MINIMUM CONCENTRATION DETECTION THRESHOLD. THE LEVEL WOULD THEN BUILD OVER TIME. DUE TO THE DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS OF CO ON THE HUMAN BODY I NEVER LET THE CONCENTRATION EXCEED 62PPM. I FOUND, HOWEVER, THAT THE PEAK CO CONCENTRATION DETECTED WAS 103PPM. I ASSUME THIS WAS REACHED WHILE THE DETECTOR WAS IN THE REAR OF THE CABIN, WHERE THE DISPLAY WAS NOT VISIBLE TO ME. THE SERVICE MANAGER AT LAKE KEOWEE FORD SUGGESTED THAT I RUN THE HVAC IN RECIRCULATE MODE. I TRIED MANY DIFFERENT HVAC MODES - RECIRCULATE, NORMAL/OUTSIDE AIR, REAR HVAC TURNED OFF - BUT THE RESULT WAS ALWAYS THE SAME, CO BEING DETECTED IN THE CABIN WITHIN 15-20 MINUTES. NEEDLESS TO SAY I AM NOT BUYING FORD'S CLAIM THAT THIS PROBLEM IS ONLY WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT VEHICLES WITH BODY PERFORATIONS FROM THE INSTALLATION OF AFTER MARKET EQUIPMENT. THE VEHICLE IS GOING INTO A CARMEL, IN FORD DEALER THIS AFTERNOON.

THE DEALER WAS ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE FAILURE, BUT STATED THAT NOTHING WAS MECHANICALLY WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 200.
