I HAD A PERSISTENT PROBLEM WITH MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. CAR WOULD LAUNCH WITH FOOT ON BRAKE. BROUGHT TO DEALER SEVERAL TIMES. NOW AT 65K MILES, THE TRANSMISSION HAS A NOISE (IN PARK AND NEUTRAL). THE TRANSMISSION SHOP HAS QUOTED $5200 FOR A NEW TRANSMISSION. IT DOES NOT SEEM RIGHT THAT A CAR COULD NOT EASILY REACH 100K THESE DAYS. I AM AN AEROSPACE ENGINEER AND WOULD BE EMBARRASSED IF MY PRODUCT FAILED AS OFTEN AS I HAVE READ ABOUT THIS CAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT VARIOUS SPEEDS THE VEHICLE LUNGE FORWARD. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER WHO WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 113,000.
VEHICLE IS LUNGING FORWARD WHILE IN PARK AND ALSO THE TRANSMISSION. THERE HAS NOT BEEN AN ACCIDENT INVOLVING THIS VEHICLE YET BUT THE WAY IT IS GOING IT IS A MATTER OF TIME. *TR
2006 FORD FREESTYLE. VEHICLE ACTS TO STALL AND THEN JUMPS FORWARD. BACKING OUT AND TURNING ON MY AC AND LUNGES FORWARD AND BACKWARDS. THOUGHT IT WAS A GAS ISSUE AND USED CLEANER FOR TANK AND STILL HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES RANDOMLY. WOULD SLOW AT A STOP LIGHT AND THEN JUMP FORWARD. PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL TO STOP IT FROM MOVING. NO MISHAPS. JUST CONCERNED WHAT WAS MAKING IT DO THIS. *TR
CAR WILL INTERMITTENTLY AND SUDDENLY SURGE FORWARD OR BACKWARD WHILE IN 0 SPEED CONDITION SUCH AS DURING PARALLEL PARKING AND MOVING THE SHIFT LEVER FROM D TO R OR R TO D. RPMS INCREASE DURING THE SURGE WITHOUT ANYTHING TOUCHING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.IT IS REQUIRED TO SLAM THE BRAKE PEDAL TO KEEP THE CAR FROM HITTING WHATEVER OR WHOEVER IS IN FRONT OR REAR OF THE VEHICLE. VERY SCARY AND DANGEROUS! THIS IS A "POPULAR" PROBLEM WITH 2005-2007 FREESTYLES AND IS NOW KNOWN TO BE CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY. REPLACEMENT COST IS ANYWHERE FROM $800-$1000 AT A FORD DEALERSHIP. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE THAT NEED TO RESULT IN A VEHICLE RECALL FOR REPAIR.
MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE'S ACCELERATOR PEDAL STUCK TO THE FLOOR ON 3 DIFFERENT OCCASIONS. AFTER SHIFTING TO NEUTRAL AND PULLING OVER, I FINALLY REALIZED THAT TAPPING THE PEDAL WOULD RELEASE IT. THE DEALER "COULD NOT DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM". SHORTLY AFTER THE ENGINE LIGHT WENT ON, THE "WRENCH" LIGHT CAME ON. WHEN THE LAST LIGHT WENT ON, THE CAR WOULD SURGE FORWARD ON ITS OWN. I HAVE READ NUMEROUS ACCOUNTS OF THIS PROBLEM AND IN THOSE CASES, THERE WAS NO SATISFACTION. IT IS VERY FRIGHTENING TO HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THE ACCELERATION OF YOUR VEHICLE ESPECIALLY WHEN 5 CHILDREN ARE WITH YOU. *TR
I HAVE A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE. OVER THE PAST 4-6 MONTHS I HAVE NOTICED THE CAR SURGING AND LURCHING FORWARD AFTER COMING TO A COMPLETE STOP WITH MY FOOT STILL COMPLETELY ON THE BRAKE. I HAVE ALMOST COLLIDED WITH VEHICLES IN FRONT OF ME AS WELL AS PEDESTRIANS IN THE CROSSWALK! THIS ALSO HAPPENS WHEN THE CAR IS IN REVERSE BACKING OUT OF THE DRIVEWAY AND STOPPING TO SHIFT INTO DRIVE. THE CAR WILL SURGE OR LURCH BACKWARDS AND IF YOU ARE NOT COVERING THE BRAKE WHILE IN DRIVE OR REVERSE, THE CAR WILL ACCELERATE WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GAS PEDAL. I TOOK THE VEHICLE TO FRONTIER FORD IN SAN JOSE, CA AND THE MECHANIC DIAGNOSED THIS PROBLEM AS A BAD THROTTLE BODY. FROM MY RESEARCH, THIS IS A WIDESPREAD PROBLEM WITH THIS MAKE & MODEL VEHICLE. I BELIEVE THIS PROBLEM MAY VERY WELL LEAD TO A SERIOUS TRAGEDY IF THIS COMMON PROBLEM IS NOT RECALLED. PLEASE HELP US OWNERS OF THESE CARS REMAIN SAFE AND NOT KILL SOMEONE BECAUSE OF THIS FAILURE! I HAVE ALWAYS OWNED FORDS HOWEVER THIS IS BY FAR THE SCARIEST FORD CAR EVER AND TO ME THE UNSAFEST!! I PURCHASED MY FORD FREESTYLE BACK IN OCTOBER 2010. EVER SINCE THEN MY CAR SEEMS TO HAVE A MIND OF ITS OWN. WHEN I AM COMPLETELY STOPPED MY CAR WILL AUTOMATICALLY LUNGE FORWARD AND EVEN STALL WHEN I AM TURNING MY WHEEL. A/C CONDENSER LEAKING. ESTIMATE $1330.30 ENGINE MOUNT FRONT RIGHT WORN. ESTIMATE $519.43 10 HOURS LABOR TO CHANGE SIX SPARK PLUG. $324.56 65K MILES 2006 FREESTYLE. *TR
WHILE IDLING IN PARK WITH A/C ON, PUT VEHICLE IN REVERSE OR DRIVE AND VEHICLE BEGAN TO QUICKLY ACCELERATE WITHOUT PRESSING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL. HAD TO QUICKLY PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL TO AVOID RUNNING INTO PEOPLE/VEHICLE. EVEN WITH BRAKE PEDAL BEING APPLIED, VEHICLE TENDS TO LURCH IN REVERSE OR DRIVE. THIS BEGAN OCCASIONALLY AT AROUND 70,000 MILES BUT NOW HAPPENS CONTINUALLY. FORD DEALER SAID IT IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THIS MODEL AND IS CAUSED BY A PART THAT IS ON BACK ORDER FOR MONTHS. VEHICLE IS UNSAFE TO OPERATE. *TR
THE CAR BEGAN TO JERK AND LURCH, AND ENGINE SPEED ABRUPTLY SLOWED AFTER ABOUT (3) HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING (FROM VERMONT TO NEW HAMPSHIRE). A TROUBLE LIGHT (WRENCH ICON) APPEARED. ENGINE RPMS FLUCTUATED, BUT VEHICLE WOULD NOT RESPOND TO THE GAS PEDAL. PULLED OVER, WAITED A FEW MINUTES, RESTARTED THE CAR. TROUBLE LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ON, AND THE VEHICLE WAS FINE AND NORMAL FOR THE REST OF THE RIDE HOME. BROUGHT CAR TO PORTSMOUTH FORD, WHO COULD NOT FIND ANY PROBLEM. SECOND INCIDENT, JANUARY 2011: HIGHWAY DRIVE BACK TO NEW HAMPSHIRE FROM CONNECTICUT. SAME PROBLEM. ABRUPT AND ALARMING DROP IN CAR SPEED. NO THROTTLE CONTROL. ERRATIC ENGINE RPM PERFORMANCE. ATTEMPTED TO PULL OFF INTERSTATE HIGHWAY TO A SAFE AREA. WAITED 5 MINUTES. RE-STARTED THE ENGINE. TROUBLE LIGHT GONE, ENGINE PERFORMED FINE, AND NO ISSUE THE REST OF THE TRIP. BROUGHT THE CAR FOR TRANSMISSION SERVICE TO VALVOLINE, THEN TO DOWLING FORD WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED. THIRD INCIDENT, MARCH 2011: AFTER (2) HOURS OF HIGHWAY DRIVING ABRUPT DROP IN ENGINE SPEED WHILE ATTEMPTING TO MERGE ON INTERSTATE 84. LOST THROTTLE CONTROL. NEAR COLLISION WITH A TRACTOR-TRAILER IN BAD WEATHER WHILE TRYING TO GET OUT OF THE WAY AND OFF THE HIGHWAY. FRIGHTENING EXPERIENCE. BROUGHT CAR TO BOB THOMAS FORD IN HAMDEN, CONNECTICUT FOR A TRANSMISSION PROGRAM UPDATE AND COMPLETE TRANSMISSION SERVICE. DEALER COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE. FOURTH INCIDENT, JUNE 24, 2011: AGAIN ON I-84 IN THE RAIN AFTER 2.5 HOURS OF HIGHWAY CRUISING. RADICAL LOSS OF ENGINE POWER AND VEHICLE SPEED. MY DAUGHTER BARELY AVOIDED A COLLISION ATTEMPTING TO MANEUVER OFF THE HIGHWAY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC WITH ERRATIC THROTTLE CONTROL. DAUGHTER CALLED ME IN A PANIC, CRYING. WAITED OFF THE HIGHWAY A FEW MINUTES, RE-STARTED, AND WAS FINE. CAR NO LONGER USED ON THE HIGHWAY, JUST LOCALLY. THE CONSUMER ALSO STATED THE ALTERNATOR FAILED. WHILE AT A STOP OR PUTTING THE CAR INTO GEAR, THE CAR WILL SUDDENLY SURGE FORWARD OR BACKWARDS DEPENDING ON PUTTING THE CAR INTO REVERSE OR DRIVE. THIS ALSO WILL OCCUR WHILE SITTING AT A STOP AND GETTING READY TO ACCELERATE. THE PROBLEM HAS BEEN RESEARCHED MANY TIMES, AND I COME BACK TO ONE CONCLUSION A BAD THROTTLE BODY MODULE. WE HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE NOT TO HAVE AN ACCIDENT YET, BUT WE ARE WAITING. THIS IS A FAIRLY REGULAR OCCURRENCE AND I AM LOOKING INTO REPLACING THE PART, BUT I KEEP SEEING POST EVERYWHERE SAYING THIS IS A BACK ORDER ITEM. *TR
MY FORD FREESTYLE SUDDENLY ACCELERATES WITHOUT PRESSING ON THE GAS. IT HAPPENS MOST OFTEN WHEN WE ARE STOPPED AND I LIFT MY FOOT OFF OF THE BRAKE, IT WILL SUDDENLY LUNGE FORWARD. IT WILL ALSO HAPPEN AT LOW SPEEDS, SUCH AS PULLING INTO OR OUT OF A PARKING SPOT. IT ALSO HAPPENS AT STOP SIGNS, DRIVE THRUS AND IN TRAFFIC. IT HAPPENS DURING EVERY DRIVE NOW, SOMETIMES NUMEROUS TIMES. I HAVE ALMOST HIT OTHER CARS AND TWICE HAVE ALMOST RUN OVER A PEDESTRIAN. THE PART THAT IS SUPPOSED TO FIX THIS PROBLEM SEEMS TO BE UNAVAILABLE. I HAVE THREE CHILDREN, THE OLDEST IS ONLY 5 AND I HAVE VERY REAL SAFETY CONCERNS FOR MY FAMILY AND OTHERS AROUND MY CAR. *TR

THE CONTACT WAS ADVISED BY A LOCAL MECHANIC THAT THE FAILURE COULD BE CAUSED BY A DEFECTIVE THROTTLE. THE VEHICLE WAS NEITHER DIAGNOSED FOR THE FAILURE NOR REPAIRED. THE VIN WAS NOT AVAILABLE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 96,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 100,000.
2006 FORD FREESTYLE TRANSMISSION AND THROTTLE CONTROL PROBLEMS. BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE USED WITH 99K MILES, DAYS AFTER BUYING MULTIPLE PROBLEMS APPEARED. FIRST THE THROTTLE BODY FAILED, VEHICLE WOULD ACCELERATE AND DECELERATE RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING AND IDLING IN GEAR. THE VEHICLE WAS AT DEALER FOR TWO WEEKS GETTING IT REPAIRED. THEY REPLACED THROTTLE BODY CONTROL TWICE BEFORE PROBLEM WAS ELIMINATED. SECOND THE CVT TRANSMISSION FAILED, WRENCH AND TRACTION CONTROL LIGHTS WOULD COME ON AND VEHICLE WOULD LOSE ALL DRIVE POWER, WOULD DO IT ABOUT EVERY 10 MILES EVENTUALLY BEFORE THE DEALER FINALLY AGREED THE TRANSMISSION WAS BAD. THEY REBUILT IT TWICE AND STILL HAD SAME PROBLEM, THEY TOOK IT TO A TRANSMISSION SHOP FINALLY TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. VEHICLE WAS IN THE SHOP OVER A MONTH FOR THIS. I DO NOT LOOK FORWARD TO FUTURE REPAIR COST KNOWING THAT THIS WILL CONTINUE TO BE A PROBLEM SINCE FORD NOR THE NHTSA WILL DO A [XXX]THING ABOUT IT. WHEN DRIVING, MY CAR LOSES POWER. SOMETIMES WHEN MOVING SLOWLY, I ENGAGE THE GAS PEDAL AND LOSE POWER. SOMETIMES WHEN I ENGAGE THE GAS TO MOVE FROM A STOPPED POSITION, MY CAR WILL START TO GO AND THEN LOSE POWER. THE CAR DOES NOT SHUT OFF, IT JUST WON'T MOVE, AND THEN SUDDENLY DOES. THE DEALER REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY, BUT THIS IS STILL HAPPENING. THEY SAID UNLESS THEY CAN GET THE PROBLEM TO HAPPEN WHEN THEY ARE DRIVING IT, THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO TO HELP FURTHER. THIS IS VERY SCARY AND I'M SURE IT'S A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THERE IS AN ACCIDENT. WHEN I PUT MY CAR IN REVERSE, SOMETIMES IT REVS UP BEFORE ACTUALLY MOVING. I HAVE HAD MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS VEHICLE, STARTING IN THE 20,000 MILES. BAD WINDOW MOTOR, BAD BRAKES, INTERMITTENT DASH BOARD CLEARANCE, AIR CONDITIONING MECHANISM LEAKING INTO CAR. THE DEALER DID REPLACE THE WINDOW MOTOR, BRAKES AND AIR CONDITIONING PROBLEM, BUT HAD NO EXPLANATION ON THE DASH LIGHTS RESETTING. MY PAINT IS BUBBLING UP ON THE HOOD OF MY CAR. FORD OFFERED TO FIX THIS FOR $850. THE BUBBLING STARTED AT 39,000 MILES. I DID NOT PAY THEM TO FIX THIS, AS I FEEL FORD SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS. WHEN FORD HAD MY CAR LAST, THEY REPLACED A SWAY BAR AND DID NOT TIGHTEN THE NUT, I THEN HAD THE ABS LIGHT COME ON AND THEY REPLACED THE WHEEL SPEED SENSOR AND TIGHTENED THE NUT. MY CAR CLUNKED SO BAD, I FEAR THAT THIS CAUSED ADDITIONAL SUSPENSION PROBLEMS. I'VE ALWAYS HAD NOISE IN THE FRONT END, ESPECIALLY ON A TIGHT TURN. THE GREASED THE FRONT END, BUT THAT DOES NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. TODAY, MY CAR ONLY HAS 45,000 MILES ON IT, BUT UNFORTUNATELY, MY WARRANTY IS UP AND I KNOW THAT ONE DAY WHEN I PUT MY FOOT ON THE GAS PEDAL, IT'S NOT GOING TO MOVE. I WAS TOLD BY A FORD SERVICE REP. THAT THE CVT TRANSMISSION CANNOT BE REPLACED, SO WHEN IT DOES FAIL, I'M OUT OF LUCK, THERE IS NO REPAIR FOR THIS. RECALL PLEASE
WHEN DRIVING THE CAR ON A SUNNY/OR TO MANY ERRANDS I WILL START SEEING THE AREA FOR THE RPM'S TO GO UP AND DOWN. AT THAT POINT I HAVE TO BASICALLY DRIVE WITH BOTH FEET. THE CAR WHEN PLACED ON EITHER DRIVE OR REVERSE WILL EXCELERATE ON IT'S ON, I THEREFORE HAVE TO BREAK QUICKLY SO AS TO NOT HIT A PEDESTRIAN OR AUTOMOBILE, WHICH IN TURN THE CAR WILL TURN OFF. IF IN TRAFFIC I MUST THROW IT ONTO NEUTRAL AND RESTART CAR. IT IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE

THE CONTACT STATED WHEN SHIFTING THE VEHICLE INTO EITHER DRIVE OR REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE FORWARD OR BACKWARDS FORCING THE CONTACT TO APPLY PRESSURE TO THE BRAKES AND AVOID A CRASH. THE WRENCH LIGHT WOULD ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INTERMITTENTLY. THE DEALER NOR THE MANUFACTURER WERE NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE CONTACT STATED WHILE HER FOOT WAS ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND SHE SHIFTED INTO PARK OR REVERSE THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGED FORWARD OR BACKWARDS WITHOUT ANY WARNINGS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE SUFFERS FROM PEELING PAINT ON THE ALUMINUM HOOD. THE PAINT ISSUE IS CONFINED TO THE 3 - 4 INCHES OF HOOD BACK FROM THE LEADING EDGE, THE LEADING EDGE, AND THE UNDERSIDE OF THE HOOD. SAME ISSUE AS ANY FORD PRODUCT WITH ALUMINUM HOODS/LIFTGATES. FORD WOULD NOT FIX THIS ISSUE UNDER WARRANTY EVEN THOUGH THEIR INTERNAL DOCUMENTS DATING BACK TO 2004 CONFIRM THE ISSUE
MY 2006 FORD FREESTYLE IS EXPERIENCING A SURGING/LURCHING AT IDLE. I'VE ALSO HAD LOSS OF POWER AND BEING FORCED TO DRIVE HOME IN LIMP MODE. THE REAL IRRITATION WAS WHEN THEY WERE TOLD OF THE LONG WAIT FOR THE PART AND THAT "THEY" THINK IT'S NOT A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE TO DISAGREE WHEN MY CAR WILL SHUT DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD BECAUSE I'M APPLYING THE BREAK IN TRAFFIC OR A STOP LIGHT. I AM CONCERNED FOR MY FAMILY'S SAFETY BECAUSE IF THIS PROBLEM GETS WORSE (EITHER IN FREQUENCY OR MAGNITUDE) SOME DAY MY CAR WILL DRIVE ITSELF INTO ANOTHER CAR, OR A PERSON. AND WHAT'S WORSE IS THAT I'M SURE THAT NO INSURANCE COMPANY WOULD BELIEVE THAT THE CAR JUST SURGED ON ITS OWN AND PLOWED INTO A PARKED CAR?BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE RIDICULOUS. THE DEALER DIDN'T WANT TO DO ANYTHING AT FIRST BECAUSE THEY PCM HAD NO STORED CODES AND THEY WEREN'T ABLE TO DUPLICATE THE PROBLEM THEMSELVES. ONCE THEY FINALLY FIGURED OUT THE PROBLEM I GOT A CALL FROM MY SERVICE ADVISOR WHO TOLD ME THAT THE THROTTLE BODY WAS MALFUNCTIONING AND THAT IT WOULD NEED TO BE REPLACED. *TR
WE HAD BEEN DRIVING FOR APPROX. 3 1/2 HOURS AND PULLED OVER TO A GAS STATION. WHEN I WENT TO DRIVE IT AGAIN, I PUT IT IN REVERSE TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPOT AND IT LUNGED. I PUT ON MY BRAKE FAST. . IT SCARED ME. IT HAD NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE. IT MADE IT THE REST OF THE TRIP. SINCE THEN, IT LUNGES EVERY NOW AND THEN.
I HAVE A 2006 FORD FREESTYLE THAT LURCHES OR SURGES WITHOUT ACCELERATION. I FIRST NOTICED IT WHEN REVERSING OUT OF PARKING SPACES. IT NOW OCCURS MUCH MORE FREQUENTLY. I THINK IT MAY HAPPEN MORE WHEN THE CAR HAS BEEN IDLING FOR A WHILE. LAST WEEKEND THE CAR HAD BEEN IDLING FOR A WHILE THEN WHEN I BACKED OUT OF THE PARKING SPACE AND HAD THE WHEEL TURNED AS FAR AS IT WOULD GO, THE CAR DIED. THEN THURSDAY WHEN TURNING AROUND - AGAIN WHEEL WAS COMPLETELY TURNED - CAR SURGED AND THEN DIED AGAIN. I RESTARTED IT AND THE CAR DID NOT RESPOND WELL TO ACCELERATION. THE RPM'S WENT UP BUT I COULD NOT ACCELERATE FAST AT ALL AND THE CAR HAD A HARD TIME RESPONDING. IT SEEMED TO EVEN OUT AFTER GETTING TO 40MPH, BUT GETTING THERE WAS DIFFICULT. THE YELLOW WRENCH LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH INDICATING A POWER TRAIN ISSUE. THE CAR CONTINUES TO LUNGE OR SURGE BACKWARD OR FORWARD WITHOUT ACCELERATING. IT IS VERY SCARY AND I AM VERY CONCERNED I WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP THE CAR ONE OF THESE TIMES AND MAY HIT SOMEONE OR SOMETHING. *TR

THE DEALER SAID IT WAS THE THROTTLE BODY AND REPLACED IT, WHICH WAS NOT COVERED ON THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PLAN. IT IS NOW HAPPENING AGAIN (SEPTEMBER OF 2012). I HAVE RESEARCHED THIS AND FOUND THAT MANY PEOPLE HAVE SAID THEY HAVE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM, SOME REPLACING THIS PART TWICE DURING THEIR OWNERSHIP OF THE VEHICLE. WRENCH LITE CAME ON SHOW A PROBLEM WITH TRANSMISSION. THE VEHICLE ONLY HAD 62,000 MILES. TOOK TO FORD DEALERSHIP WAS TOLD THE TRANSMISSION NEEDS TO BE REBUILD. WHICH WOULD COST $5,100. 2006 FORD FREESTYLE TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. MY CAR HAS 110K MILES AND I WAS INFORMED THAT I NEED AN NEW TRANSMISSION. I WAS DRIVING ON THE INTERSTATE AND MY CAR LOST POWER. 2006 FORD FREESTYLE SURGING - WHEN SLOWING DOWN, VEHICLE SURGED FORWARD WHILE PRESSING THE BRAKE. ALSO HAD AN INCIDENT WHERE IT SURGED FORWARD WHILE IN REVERSE. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO MY LOCAL FORD DEALER. THEY TRIED TO CHARGE ME $390 TO CLEAN THE MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR. I HAVE AN EXTENDED WARRANTY AND I QUESTIONED WHY I WOULD BE CHARGED THE FULL AMOUNT. AFTER MUCH DEBATE, THEY AGREED TO COVER UNDER MY WARRANTY BUT I HAD TO PAY THE $100 DEDUCTIBLE. THEY DID THE CLEANING, THEY DID NOT REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY AS I REQUESTED. 2006 FORD FREESTYLE LUNGES OR LURCHES WHEN IN REVERSE OR WHEN MOVING FORWARD AT SLOW SPEED. RPM'S JUMP AND BRAKES HAVE TO BE APPLIED TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. CAUSE SEEMS TO BE A MALFUNCTIONING THROTTLE BODY SENSOR. NORMALLY HAPPENS AFTER CAR HAS BEEN DRIVEN FOR A LONG TIME PERIOD AND DURING HOT SUMMER DRIVING CONDITIONS. PROBLEM STARTED OCCURING AFTER AROUND 50,000 MILES AND IS BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. WAS INFORMED THAT FORD HAD PART MANUFACTURED BY AN OUTSIDE VENDOR THAT HAS SINCE GONE OUT OF BUSINESS AND THAT THE PART HAS BEEN REDESIGNED BY ANOTHER VENDOR THAT ELIMINATES THE FALSE READINGS THAT CAUSE A SURGE IN RPMS. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE THAT WILL REQUIRE A RECALL TO AVOID FREESTYLES WITH THIS DEFECTIVE PART FROM LOSING CONTOL AND CAUSING POTENTIAL ACCIDENTS.
FOR THE PAST 4 OR 5 WEEKS, WHEN YOUR FOOT IS ON THE BRAKE, THE CAR WOULD REV-UP AND TRY TO TAKE OFF. ONCE HOME, I CLEANED THE THROTTLE BODY AND IT SEEMS TO HAVE HELPED THE ISSUE, ALTHOUGH IT STILL IS SURGING SOME. I FEEL THAT THIS MALFUNCTION WAS EXTREMELY PREMATURE. FORD SHOULD REIMBURSE CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE RECEIPTS TO PROVE THAT THEY COMPLETED WORK THAT WAS LATER A NHTSA ACTION.
