I AM FILLING OUT A FORM REGARDING THE INVESTIGATION OF THE FORD FREESTYLE'S 'LUNGING' PROBLEM. I HAD NOTICED THIS ISSUE BEGINNING A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO ON MY 2007 FREESTYLE LIMITED FWD WITH CVT. IT WOULD BE IDLING AND THEN AS I WOULD PUT THE CAR INTO GEAR WHETHER IT IS FORWARD OR REVERSE, IT WOULD REV WITHOUT MY DOING. I DO NOT USE MY AC MUCH AT ALL SO I DOUBT IT WAS ON WHEN THE REVVING HAPPENED BUT THIS PROBLEM HAPPENS ABOUT 2-3 TIMES A MONTH. LUCKILY, THE ISSUE HAS NOT CAUSED ANY ACCIDENTS, BUT IF THERE IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE TO RESOLVE THE ISSUE AT NO COST TO ME, I WOULD SURELY APPRECIATE IT. I TOOK MY CAR TO CAPITOL FORD IN RALEIGH, NC AND AFTER DESCRIBING MY PROBLEM, THEY TOLD ME I NEEDED TO SPEND $165 ON A THROTTLE BODY CLEANING. A SERVICE I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF IN MY LIFE, THOUGH THEY SAY IT IS SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE EVERY 30K MILES. I LOVE MY CAR AND WANT TO KEEP IT FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE, AND FORD HAS ALWAYS BEEN RELIABLE WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING ME INFORMED ABOUT THINGS NEEDING TO BE DONE TO KEEP IT RUNNING SMOOTHLY, BUT THEY HAVE NEVER BEFORE MENTIONED THE THROTTLE BODY CLEANING UNTIL AFTER I INQUIRED ABOUT THE RECALL INVESTIGATION AND THE ENGINE REVVING ISSUE. I AM WONDERING IF THIS IS THE CORPORATE LINE THEY ARE TELLING THEIR PEOPLE TO TELL US FREESTYLE OWNERS IN REGARDS TO SPENDING MONEY TO GET THIS PROBLEM FIXED BEFORE YOU GUYS MAKE IT A FREE FIX DUE TO A RECALL. I CERTAINLY HOPE THEY ARE NOT TRYING TO GET MONEY OUT OF UNSUSPECTING AND LOYAL OWNERS OF THEIR CARS THAT PUT THEIR FAMILY'S LIVES IN FORD'S HANDS EACH AND EVERY DAY. CAR LUNGES ACCELERATES FORWARD AND BACKWARDS WHILE DRIVING IN AND OUT OF DRIVEWAY OR PARKING SPACES. IT HAS HAPPENED NUMEROUS TIMES OVER THE LAST YEAR. *TR
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD FREESTYLE. WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS PARKED THE CONTACT ATTEMPTED TO PLACE THE VEHICLE AND IT SUDDENLY LUNGED FORWARD. THE FAILURE ALSO OCCURRED WHILE DRIVING IN REVERSE. THE FAILURE OCCURRED INTERMITTENTLY; HOWEVER, OVER TIME HAD BECOME PROGRESSIVELY WORSE AND MORE CONSISTENT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER FOR DIAGNOSTICS. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THERE WAS AN INVESTIGATION UNDER NHTSA ACTION NUMBER: PE11018 (VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL) THAT MAY BE RELATED TO THE FAILURE. THE APPROXIMATE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 65,000.
2007 FORD FREESTYLE LUNGED TWICE IN MAY, 2011 WHILE PULLING INTO PARKING SPOT. INCIDENT HAPPENED AT 55,000 MILES. SLAMMED ON BRAKES AND DID NOT HIT NEIGHBORING VEHICLES. EARLY IN JUNE 2011, HAD OUR AC REPLACED WHICH WAS NOT WORKING. IMMEDIATELY AFTER AC WAS WORKING AGAIN, CAR LUNGED, WRENCH LIGHT APPEARED AND VEHICLE STALLED DURING A LOW SPEED TURN. CAR PROCEEDED TO LUNGE AND SURGE REGULARLY WHEN IT WAS PUT IN REVERSE OR DRIVE. WITH FOOT FIRMLY ON BRAKE AND PUTTING THE CAR IN PARK, RPMS WOULD GO BETWEEN 3000 AND 5000. THEN CAR WOULD DIE. WITH EXPERIMENTING, CAR WOULD NOT DO IT WHEN AIR CONDITIONING WAS TURNED OFF. WE RESEARCHED INTERNET AND LEARNED ABOUT SURGING AND THROTTLE BODY PROBLEMS. HAD FUEL INDUCTION SERVICE PERFORMED AND HAVE NOT HAD RECURRENCE IN 90+ DAYS. DID NOT REPLACE THROTTLE BODY YET BUT SUSPECT IT WILL BE CLOGGED UP AGAIN WITH TIME AND MILEAGE. WE CAN'T PREDICT WHEN THE SURGING WILL HAPPEN. WE WILL NOT LET OUR TEENAGER DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. IT IS VERY UNSAFE AND NEEDS TO BE RECALLED FOR THIS REASON. *KB
WE OWN A 2007 FORD FREESTYLE. IT HAS ROUGHLY 51,000 MILES ON IT WHICH HAVE BEEN ALL CITY/HIGHWAY MILES. WE HAVE NEVER TOWED WITH THIS VEHICLE. WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH SURGING FOLLOWED BY LACK OF POWER FOR ABOUT A MONTH. TO GET POWER BACK, YOU MUST PUT THE GAS PEDAL TO THE FLOOR AND WAIT FOR IT THE POWER TO KICK BACK IN. WE TOOK OUR VEHICLE IN TO LITHIA FORD IN BOISE, ID WHERE WE RESIDE AND WHERE WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAVE HAD IT MAINTAINED. THEY INFORMED US THAT THE THROTTLE BODY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. OF COURSE, THIS IS NOT COVERED UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRANTY, EVEN THOUGH IT IS REQUIRED FOR THE VEHICLE TO DRIVE. THE ESTIMATED COST IS $954! I GUESS WE ARE LUCKY THAT IT HAS NOT FAILED ON US YET AS THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS FRIGHTENING STORIES ABOUT THIS TYPE OF FAILURE. WE WILL NEED TO HAVE IT REPLACED WITHIN THE WEEK AND WILL BE RETAINING THE OLD PART. HOWEVER, THIS APPEARS TO BE A SYSTEMIC ISSUE WITH FORD FREESTYLES AND CERTAINLY A SAFETY ISSUE. I HAVE OWNED A FORD ALL OF MY DRIVING LIFE AND, FOR THE FIRST TIME, AM REGRETTING BUYING THIS ONE. WE WOULD ASK THAT YOU TAKE NOTE OF THE OVERWHELMING NUMBER OF COMPLAINTS FROM OTHER FREESTYLE OWNERS, ESPECIALLY FOR THE 2007, AND IMMEDIATELY OPEN AN INVESTIGATION ON BEHALF OF US CONSUMERS. EVERY TIME I PUT MY VEHICLE IN DRIVE IT ACCELERATES AND I HAVE TO IMMEDIATELY BRAKE, ITS THE SAME AS GOING IN REVERSE WHICH IS ACTUALLY SCARY SINCE IT DID THIS TO ME IN A TIGHT SQUEEZED PARKING AREA AND I ALMOST HIT ANOTHER VEHICLE. *TR
MY CAR AFTER BEING IN PARK, WHEN PLACED INTO DRIVE LURCHED FORWARD. ONCE I STARTED THE ENGINE DID NOT SEEM TO GO QUITE RIGHT AND I HAD AN ORANGE WRENCH LIGHT APPEAR. I PULLED OVER AND TURNED OFF CAR AND THE LIGHT WAS OFF WHEN I RESTARTED IT AND IT ACTED FINE. I HAVE HAD 3 SUBSEQUENT SIMILAR INCIDENCES...THE LURCHES HAVE HAD ME COME CLOSE TO HITTING A CAR AND A PERSON. THE LIGHT ALWAYS GOES AWAY WHEN I TURN OFF THE CAR AND TURN IT RIGHT BACK ON. *TR
MY 2007 FORD FREESTYLE SEEMS TO LURCH FORWARD WHILE IDLING. IT HAS HAPPENED ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS WITH THE MOST RECENT OCCURRENCE ALSO INCLUDING THE ENGINE JUST SHUTTING OFF BY ITSELF. IT LURCHES UNCONTROLLABLY AND I'M AFRAID IT MAY HIT ANOTHER CAR IN FRONT OF ME. *TR
I HAVE TAKEN MY 2007 FORD FREESTYLE TO TWO SEPARATE DEALERS FOR SURGING. NEITHER DEALER ADMITTED HEARING OF THIS ISSUE BEFORE. THE CAR WILL SURGE URGE TO ALMOST 2000 RPMS AND THEN DIE BACK TO AROUND 500 RPMS AND STRUGGLE TO RUN. IT WILL REPEAT THIS UNTIL THE CAR IS SHUT OFF AND RESTARTED. IN THE 4 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP THIS HAS HAPPENED AT LEAST A DOZEN TIMES AS RECENTLY AS LAST FRIDAY. MY WIFE REFUSES TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE AS IT WILL DO THIS AT INTERSECTIONS AND SHE DOES NOT TRUST THE CAR TO BE ABLE TO ACCELERATE WHEN NEEDED. I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE HAVING THESE ISSUES ACCORDING TO THE DEALER SERVICE DEPARTMENT. *TR

THE CONSUMER REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE WHILE SITTING IN A DRIVE-THROUGH WINDOW. NEITHER VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED IN THE INCIDENT. THE CONTACT TOOK THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALER AND THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY. THE CONTACT WAS CONCERNED THAT THE FAILURE COULD BE A RECURRING PROBLEM. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS UNKNOWN AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 70,000. UPDATED 03/05/12*LJ
MY 2007 FORD FREESTYLE STARTED JUMPING OR LUNGING WHEN I WOULD BE PARKING. I WOULD HAVE MY FOOT FIRMLY ON THE BRAKE AND WAS ABOUT TO PUT THE GEAR IN PARK WHEN THE CAR WOULD JUST JUMP OR LUNGE FORWARD. I WOULD PUSH HARDER ON THE BRAKE AND IT WOULD STOP. FORTUNATELY, I DID NOT HIT A CAR OR WALL IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER THIS HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES OVER A THREE WEEK PERIOD, I TOOK THE CAR IN FOR SERVICE THIS WEEK AND THEY HAD TO REPLACE THE THROTTLE. IT COST ME $856.64 AT MY LOCAL FORD DEALERSHIP. *TR
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
OUR 2007 FORD FREESTYLE IS EXHIBITING VEHICLE LUNGING AND/OR ENGINE REVVING WHEN A FOOT IS NOT ON THE ACCELERATOR, AND OCCASIONALLY AT LOW SPEED WHEN IT IS.. THIS IS NOW OCCURRING DAILY, AND HAS WORSENED SINCE HAVING ONE REPAIR (REPLACED ENGINE/TRANSMISSION MOUNT) DONE LAST WEEK. *TR
THE REAR ROTORS AND PADS ON MY 2007 FORD FREESTYLE (FWD) WERE REPLACED FOR THE SECOND TIME AT 43,700 MILES, LESS THEN 15K MILES AFTER THE FIRST TIME. THE FIRST TIME THERE WAS NO CHARGE AT 28,900 MILES UNDER THE FORD PROGRAM 07N10. THE FRONT PADS WERE REPLACED AND THE ROTORS TURNED ONLY ONCE AT 43,700. THE FORD DEALERSHIP SERVICE AREA SAID THE REAR ROTORS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED JUST FROM NORMAL WEAR. I HEARD THAT THE FRONT BRAKES ARE THE STOPPING POWER OF MY FREESTYLE, IF THAT IS TRUE ONE WOULD THINK THAT THE FRONT ROTORS WOULD HAVE THE SAME AMOUNT OF WEAR, OR AM I INCORRECT? *TR
MY FORD FREESTYLE WOULD ACCELERATE ON ITS OWN. MAYBE 2-5 MPH AND YOU WOULD NEED TO BRAKE IMMEDIATELY (SCARY). I TOOK IT TO A FORD DISTRIBUTORSHIP (LOGANVILLE FORD, 3460 HIGHWAY 78, LOGANVILLE , GA 30052, 770 554-9994 TO GET THE ACCELERATION FIXED. A MR. JASON CORRELL SAID THAT HE WAS UNAWARE OF ANY ACCELERATION IN THE FORD FREESTYLE AND IT WAS MY PROBLEM NOT FORD'S I CALLED THE REGIONAL OFFICE OF FORD AND WAS TOLD THE SAME--NO KNOWN PROBLEMS. THEY SAID THEY WOULD FILE A REPORT, BUT WOULD NOT HELP ME ON THE REPAIR. ON MAY 26, 2010, I WENT BACK TO THE DEALER AND PAID $1,056.89 TO GET THE PROBLEM FIXED. THEY REPLACED THE THROTTLE BODY ASSY. THE CAR HAS WORKED FINE SINCE.

SURGES UP TO 2000 RPM WHEN SLOWLY TURNING INTO A PARKING SPACE, DRIVEWAY, ETC. BRAKES HAVE TO BE FORCEFULLY APPLIED TO AVOID THE VEHICLE SURGING FORWARD AND HITTING SOMETHING OR SOMEONE. *TR
MY FORD FREESTYLE SURGES IN DIRECTION THE TRANSMISSION IS IN. IF IN DRIVE IT WILL SURGE FORWARD, IF IN REVERSE IT WILL SURGE BACKWARDS. THIS OCCURS EVERY TIME I DRIVE THE VEHICLE. I'M AFRAID I AM GOING TO HIT A PEDESTRIAN WHILE TRYING TO BACK OUT OF A PARKING SPACE. I'M ALSO CONCERNED WHEN MY DAUGHTER USES THIS VEHICLE BECAUSE OF HER INEXPERIENCE. THIS PROBLEM WAS IDENTIFIED TO BE THE THROTTLE BODY AND IS MOST PREDOMINANT DURING WARM WEATHER OR WHEN THE VEHICLE IS THOROUGHLY WARMED UP. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OUR 2006 FORD FREESTYLE AND WAS WAITING FOR A REPLACEMENT THROTTLE BODY WHEN THE VEHICLE WAS TOTALED IN AN ACCIDENT. NOW HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM WITH OUR 2007 MODEL. *TR

THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO THE DEALER TO BE DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 60,000 AND THE CURRENT MILEAGE WAS 65,000.

WHEN IDLING, OR JUST BEGINNING TO GO FORWARD, CAR LUNGED/SURGED FORWARD. WHEN JUST BEGINNING TO GO IN REVERSE, CAR LUNGED/SURGED BACKWARD. LUNGES/SURGES INCREASED IN FREQUENCY AND SPEED. THE DEALERSHIP SERVICE DEPT. DETERMINED THAT THE ELECTRONIC THROTTLE BODY NEEDED TO BE REPLACED.
TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2007 FORD FREESTYLE. THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE VEHICLE WOULD LUNGE BACKWARD WHILE IN REVERSE, CAUSING THE VEHICLE TO STALL. THE VEHICLE WOULD ALSO LUNGE FORWARD WHILE IN DRIVE WITH THE AIR CONDITIONER TURNED ON. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT TAKEN TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER OR A MECHANIC TO HAVE THE FAILURE DIAGNOSED. SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE LAST FEW WEEKS, THE VEHICLE WILL JERK FORWARD WHEN PULLING INTO A PARKING PLACE OR JERK BACKWARD WHEN BACKING OUT OF PARKING PLACE. THE ENGINE WILL REV ON ITS OWN WITHOUT HAVING TO PUSH ON THE ACCELERATOR CAUSING THE JERKY FEELING. *TR
I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE CAR WANTING TO ACCELERATE FORWARD OR BACKWARDS. AT FIRST I THOUGHT I WAS IMAGING UNTIL WHILE AT WALMART WHEN I PUT THE IN REVERSE = CAR SURGED BACKWARDS WHILE FOOT ON THE BRAKE - ABOUT HIT A CHILD - WHEN PUT IN FORWARD GEAR = CAR SURGED - JERKED - HAD NO RPMS. AT TIME OF PURCHASE I DRILLED THE SALES MANAGER ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION AND STATED THAT I DID NOT WANT THE SAME PROBLEMS AS EXPERIENCED WITH MY WINDSTAR. AFTER READING OTHER ACCOUNTS HERE I ALSO RECOGNIZE THE LURCHING FORWARD. TRIED TO TRADE VEHICLE BUT COST OF REPAIR TAKES AWAY TRADE IN VALUE.
