This page lists owner-reported complaints filed with NHTSA for the 2009 Ford Fusion. Complaints are unverified consumer reports submitted to NHTSA and do not by themselves prove a defect or defect rate.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. The contact stated while driving approximately 15 mph when smoke coming from the engine compartment was noticed. The contact continued to drive until they heard a popping noise from the engine compartment then pulled over. The fire department was called and the fire was extinguished. A police report was filed and the contact sought medical care and sustained smoke inhalation. The vehicle was then towed to the contact's residence. The contact stated check engine warning light was illuminated. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
The hydralic control system has failed. In April,I did have the car taken to Serra Ford in Rochester to fix the recall 19S54 Brake Campaign. The HCU did pass the test on that date and a DOT 4 flush was completed. Last week the HCU fail and when I took it to the dealership, they said I would need pay $1700 for a replacement part that has shown to be a cause of the ABS failure. Therefore, Ford should pay for the cost of the replacement.
2009 FORD FUSION. CONSUMER WRITES IN REGARDS TO NHTSA SAFETY RECALL 19V-904. THE CONSUMER STATED THE DEALER WOULD NOT ANSWER OR RETURN CALLS SO THE RECALL REPAIR COULD BE SCHEDULED. *JS
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the brake pedal would depress to the floorboard without warning. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the contact was informed that the Hydraulic Electric Control Unit (HECU) had failed and needed to be replaced. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 92,000.
Vehicle was called in for the above recall on May 20, 2021. Upon arrival at dealership, we were informed that the part was not available. Part availability keeps getting pushed back month-to-month until now the projection is the end of August. The dealership kept our car for two months saying that it was unsafe to drive. Just this week they returned the car to us unrepaired saying that it is now safe to drive. That is inconsistent and illogical.
Got a ticket on June23rd the breaks were low and I couldn't come to complete stop checked the break fluid level and it was full. June 28th Breaks completely went out without no warning signs nothing while I was driving had to stop with the emergency brake.I had car towed to Sterling Ford June 29.I'm not the original owner so I had no idea about the recall and I purchased the car June 2nd in Gardena California where I'm from now stranded in Houston Texas.
This vehicle had a recall on the ABS Hydraulic Control Unit it was taken to the dealer Champion Ford in Erie, PA June 14, 2021 to have it taken care of where they flushed it and put new cap on but did not replace the Hydraulic Control Unit. Shortly after that ABS light went on on the dash and car sat for awhile ( I bought car recently from coworker). After we purchased light was still on so we took it back to Champion Ford in Erie, PA and they said the Hydraulic Control Unit is bad and needs replaced and that is back ordered and it will be $813 because Ford will not pay for the recall because it is not a reasonable time for subsequent failure. The car only has 1000 miles on it since it was in for recall in June 2021. I called Ford 800 number and they cannot tell me what a reasonable time is and how long the recall is good for. Any help I could get would be appreciated. I have a new 16 year old driver driving this car so this is an extreme safety issue. PLEASE HELP. Sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. The contact received a recall notification for NHTSA Campaign number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The part was not available for repair. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
The contact owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, without warning the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that there was an abnormal odor inside the cabin of the vehicle. The contact coasted the vehicle to the road shoulder. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to start-up. The contact left the vehicle on the shoulder to get assistance with towing. The vehicle was towed to the residence where an independent mechanic was contacted and came out to the residence. No dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was diagnosed and determined that the power train control unit and ignition coils failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not drivable. The manufacturer was notified of the failure however, no further assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximate 90,000.
The contact's granddaughter owns a 2009 Ford Fusion. The contact's granddaughter received two recall notifications for NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V904000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) and 21V158000 (Air Bags) however, the parts for the recall repairs were not yet available. The contact's granddaughter had taken the vehicle to a dealer where they confirmed that the parts were unavailable. After performing a check on the Hydraulic Control Unit, the unit passed inspection and the recall was removed from the Vin. The contact then stated that while her granddaughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The contact was uncertain if any warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel, or how her granddaughter was able to stop the vehicle. Due to the failure, her granddaughter had the vehicle towed back to the dealer where it remained in their possession. Recently, the contact's granddaughter received a call from the dealer where they stated that the vehicle had been repaired however, she was given a bill for the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure multiple times and she was informed that the Vin was not under recall regarding the brakes. The contact repeatedly informed the manufacturer that the vehicle had been placed under recall however, the recall designation was removed without the vehicle being repaired. The manufacturer then notified her that she needed to resolve the issue with the dealer. No further assistance was provided. The vehicle remained in the possession of the dealer. The failure mileage was 90,933.
On multiple occasions, while either having to slam on brakes to make a sudden stop OR when hitting a decent size bump in the road, the ABS go out. After about the third time it happened, I figured out how to properly pump my breaks to make a stop, but I live in a high traffic urban area. Constant stop and go which makes this very difficult. It is horrible that the recall was made 18 months ago, but a remedy has not been formed. I am contacted about 10 times a week about my airbag recall, but nothing about this. Every time it happens I am terrified, especially during rush hour with my child in the car. I will also note, that every time I try to take it to a shop to be looked at, it is working again, and no issue is ever found - but research shows different.
Ford issued a recall in 2020. They repeatedly refused to repair the defect, saying their corporate office had not authorized payment. More than a year later, they finally scheduled me for an appointment to fix the recall defect (brakes). In the meantime, a second recall (airbag) had been issued. At the recall repair appointment, they fixed the airbag recall issue. However, while working on the brake recall issue, they broke the calipers. They jerry-rigged it to function safely. They did not repair the damage they caused. They did not even fix the recall issue, despite having the parts on hand to do so. Now they say they don't have the parts to fix the damage they caused, and haven't fixed the original recall.

The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Vin tool confirms parts not available.
THE CONTACT OWNS A 2009 FORD FUSION. THE CONTACT RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V904000 (SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC). THE CONTACT STATED THAT THE ABS WARNING LIGHT WAS ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL DEALER WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED WITH THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT NEEDING TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALER INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT TO SERVICE THE RECALL, THE CONTACT HAD TO FIRST REPLACE THE HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT YET REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER HAD BEEN INFORMED OF THE FAILURE AND INFORMED THE CONTACT THAT THE VEHICLE WAS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. NO ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 85,000.
In December 2019, a recall was issued for the HCU of the ABS system that my 2009 Ford Fusion is included in. (Manufacturer Recall Number19S54 NHTSA Recall Number19V904). My local Ford dealer stated that parts weren't yet available when we called, and once the pandemic started, I figured it would take even longer for them to be available. At that time, I hadn't had any issues with the HCU or ABS. However, since the recall, I've had two incidents that have taken place, both of which were EXACTLY as described in this recall: -In January 2021, I was driving home from work, and as I was coming up to a yield sign and began pressing on the brake, I had to press my foot all the way to the floor for the car to even begin stopping. This happened out of nowhere, and from then on I experienced a low brake pedal-I couldn't stop without the brake pedal being extended all the way to the floor. I took it to my local Ford dealer and explained that it's exactly as the recall states. They repeatedly assured me that it wasn't the recall, but the master cylinder, and charged me over $500 to replace. I was surprised, as what I experienced was exactly in line with the recall. -The car drove ok for awhile after this repair, but in May 2021 (just a few weeks ago), I experienced the exact same situation again, and am currently awaiting another appointment, as I once again have low brake pedal and can't stop without extending it all the way to the floor. I can't drive my vehicle in this condition-it is completely unsafe for both myself and other motorists, as my ability to brake is again compromised. I hope that the Ford dealer was honest the first time around, as my issue is EXACTLY what was described with the HCU of the ABS system per the recall notice, and not the master cylinder. (Which would be impossible now, anyway, as they replaced it previously.) If the issue is now diagnosed as the HCU recall, how do I go about getting refunded for the unnecessary master cylinder repair?

BEGINNING IN 2017, MY 2009 FORD FUSION BEGAN EXPERIENCING DECREASED BRAKING FOLLOWING ENGAGEMENT OF THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM. ON 20DEC2019, FORD ISSUED RECALL 19S54/NHTSA RECALL 19V904. ON 04 MAY 2021, I DELIVERED THE VEHICLE TO SUNTRUP FORD WESTPORT AND REVIEWED THE WORK TO BE PERFORMED WITH SERVICE ADVISOR JL INCLUDING REPAIRS FOR RECALL 19-S54 AND OTHER SERVICES. I RECEIVED A CALL MR. JL WHO ADVISED THE REPAIRS FOR RECALL COULD NOT BE COMPLETED WITHOUT ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC WORK RELATING TO NOT BEING ABLE TO BLEED THE FRONT BRAKES. WHEN ASKED IF THERE WOULD BE CHARGE FOR THE DIAGNOSTIC WORK, I WAS ADVISED THAT IT WOULD BE AN $80 CHARGE FOR 30 MINUTES OF TECHNICIAN TIME BUT WAS ALSO TOLD ITS LIKELY THE BRAKE LINES COLLAPSED AND THERE MIGHT BE CALIPER ISSUE. I VERBALLY AUTHORIZED THE ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTIC WORK ON 05MAY2021. I RECEIVED A TEXT MESSAGE FROM MR. J.L. STATING TO COMPLETE RECALL 19-S54 I WOULD HAVE TO PAY $820 +TAX TO REPLACE THE BRAKE HOSES AND THAT THERE MAY STILL BE A CALIPER ISSUE THAT MAY NEED ADDRESSED AS WELL PRIOR TO PERFORMING THE RECALL WORK. I CALLED MR. JL BACK TO DECLINE THE WORK AND TO PREPARE THE CAR FOR PICK UP SO I COULD GET A 2ND OPINION. ON 06 MAY 2021, I DELIVERED THE VEHICLE TO AN INDEPENDENT REPAIR SHOP REQUESTING A 2ND OPINION SPECIFICALLY REQUESTING INSPECTION THE BRAKE HOSES AND CALIPERS AND TEST IF THE BRAKES WOULD BLEED BRAKE FLUID. THE TECHNICIAN ADVISED THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH BLEEDING ANY OF THE 4 BRAKES AND NO SIGNS OF CALIPERS STICKING. I CONTACTED A DIFFERENT ST. LOUIS AREA DEALERSHIP AND WAS ADVISED TO CONTACT THEM AGAIN IN APPROXIMATELY 1 MONTH AS THE PARTS ARE UNAVAILABLE. AS OF 08 MAY 2021, I AM STILL EXPERIENCING THE SAME ISSUES WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM AS FIRST EXPERIENCED IN 2017 AND NO REPAIRS HAVE BEEN COMPLETED TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.

RECALL FOR ABS WAS ISSUED BACK ON DEC 18, 2019. LAST UPDATE IS THERE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A FIX EXPECTED BY END OF FIRST QUARTER OF 2020. IT'S NOW THE END OF FIRST QUARTER OF 2021 (15 MONTHS LATER) AND THERE IS STILL NO INDICATION OF A REPAIR DATE. IN ADDITION THERE IS NOW A SAFETY RECALL REGARDING THE DRIVER AIRBAG AS WELL. I UNDERSTAND IT TAKES TIME TO IMPLEMENT A FIX, BUT IT SEEM AS IF THE MANUFACTURER IS NOT PUTTING ENOUGH PRIORITY ON GETTING THESE REPAIRS DONE IN A TIMELY MATTER. AT THIS RATE, WITH TWO ACTIVE SAFETY RECALLS, EITHER FIXES NEED TO BE EXPEDITED; OR AN ACCEPTABLE BUY-BACK PLAN THAT ENSURES OWNERS ARE COMPENSATED FOR THE FULL VEHICLE VALUE PLUS TIME AND RISK.

TAKATA AIRBAG IN MY 2009 FORD FUSION HAS BEEN REPORTED AS DEFECTIVE AND COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS HARM AND INJURY IF IN AN ACCIDENT. WHEN WILL THIS BE RECALLED AND RESOLVED? SEE ARTICLE POSTED BY CNN BUSINESS: HTTPS://WWW.CNN.COM/2021/01/22/BUSINESS/FORD-TAKATA-AIRBAG-RECALL/INDEX.HTML

I HAVE A CONCERN ABOUT RECALL (#19S54) ON A 2009 FORD FUSION ([XXX]) THAT WAS PURCHASED FROM RANDY MARION SAV-A-LOT IN HICKORY, NC ON 12/12/20. ON 01/01/21, TWENTY DAYS AFTER IT WAS PURCHASED, MY SON WAS DRIVING HOME ON THE INTERSTATE AND WHEN ATTEMPTING TO SLOW, THE BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND WOULD NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. THIS WAS AN EXTREMELY DANGEROUS SITUATION FOR NOT ONLY MY SON, BUT OTHER DRIVERS AS WELL. FORTUNATELY, HE WAS ABLE TO STOP AS HE PUMPED THE BRAKES AND USED THE EMERGENCY BRAKE. BECAUSE IT WAS UNSAFE TO DRIVE, WE HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE NEAREST FORD DEALERSHIP WHICH IS CLONINGER FORD IN HICKORY, NC. WE WERE TOLD THAT EVEN THOUGH THERE IS AN ACTIVE RECALL, ANY REPAIRS WOULD HAVE TO BE PAID FOR BY US BECAUSE A 'REMEDY WAS NOT YET MADE AVAILABLE BY FORD', HOWEVER, THEY WERE ABLE TO REMEDY THE SITUATION, PUT NEW PARTS ON IT & REPAIR THE BRAKES. FORD HAS NOT "RELEASED A BULLETIN". SO I HAD TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A RECALL. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR
I AM WRITING IN REGARDS TO THE MANUFACTURER RECALL: 19S54. HOW ARE THESE PARTS ONLY AVAILABLE IN THE 1ST QUARTER OF 2021? IT'S NOW IN THE WINTER MONTHS IN NORTHWEST OHIO AND I CAN'T EVEN BRAKE MY CAR SAFELY IN THE SNOW AND/OR ICE. I NEED TO DRIVE TO AND FROM WORK AND MAKE ANY OTHER TRIPS, BUT I CAN'T DO IT SAFELY!! WHAT CAN YOU DO TO FIX THIS ISSUE? CAN YOU REFUND ME MY BILL IF I TAKE THIS INTO A SHOP?
NHTSA RECALL NUMBER: 19V904. "PARTS ARE ANTICIPATED TO BEAVAILABLE LATE FIRST QUARTER 2020". FORD HAS NOT RECIEVED THE PARTS AND OR NOTIFIED ME. I JUST CHATTED WITH THEM ON LINE ABOUT THIS. ". THIS IS ALMOT 1 YEAR LATE TO GET THE PARTS. NO UPDATES TO NHSTA WEBSITE THAT EXPLAINS THE DIFFERENCE. AS A GENERAL SIDE NOTE. IT WOULD BE GOOD TO HAVE WITH THE RECALL NOTICE ANY INFORMATION THE CONSUMER CAN DO TO THEIR VEHICLE TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT OF HE RECALL ON THE VEHICLE IF POSSIBLE. EXAMPLES 1) WEEKLY CHECK OF BRAKE FLUID, 2) FUNCTION OF DEVICE BEING RECALLED IE TRUNK OR HOOD LATCH... THANKS FOR ALL YOU DO.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING OVER A YEAR TO GET THIS RECALL FIXED. FORD IS NOT TRYING TO GET ANYTHING DONE WITH THIS AND IT IS FOR BREAKS. SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET KILLED
I HAD THE ABS HCU FAIL. I WAS FORTUNATE THAT I HAD PLENTY OF ROOM IN FRONT OF ME TO STOP. I UNDERSTAND THERE IS A RECALL ON THIS. HOWEVER A YEAR LATER FORD STILL DOESNT HAVE TO PART. IS THIS TIMELY? WHAT IS REASONABLE TIME? WHAT AM I TO DO, BUT DRIVE A FAULTY BRAKE SYSTEM? FORDS SOLUTION IS I PAY TO FIX IT AND THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME WHAT THEY FEEL IS ADEQUATE. I AM A BIT CONFUSED. DO THEY HAVE THE PARTS? I HAVE THEIR REFUSAL LETTER TO FIX IT AND TEXT THAT THEY WILL REIMBURSE ME TO FIX IT.
MY DAUGHTER REAR ENDED ANOTHER VEHICLE AND PUSHED THAT VEHICLE INTO ANOTHER VEHICLE BECAUSE HER BRAKE PEDAL WENT ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR AND FAILED TO STOP HER VEHICLE. SHE REPEATEDLY MASHED THE BRAKE PEDAL WITH NO RESPONSE. THE AIR BAGS SHOULD HAVE DEPLOYED AND DID NOT. SHE WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 45-50 MPH ON THE HIGHWAY AND TRAFFIC STOPPED IN FRONT OF HER. SHE WAS DRIVING CAREFULLY BECAUSE IT WAS IN THE CITY AND HAD BEEN RAINING. SHE WAS NOT FOLLOWING TOO CLOSELY OR GOING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS. HER BRAKES FAILED. EVEN THOUGH FORD SAYS THIS VEHICLE IS STILL SAFE TO DRIVE UNTIL THE PARTS COME IN FOR THE RECALL, IT IS NOT. THIS IS A DANGEROUS VEHICLE TO DRIVE UNTIL FORD CAN DO THE ISSUED RECALL FOR THE HYDRAULIC BRAKE VALVE. THEY STILL DON'T HAVE THE PARTS AS OF THE DAY I'M TYPING THIS COMPLAINT. RECALL NUMBER 19V-904. I HAVE MADE STATE FARM AWARE AND THEY ARE PERFORMING INVESTIGATIONS. I HAVE HIRED AN ATTORNEY BECAUSE MY DAUGHTER IS NOT AT FAULT. I HAVE REPORTED THE INCIDENT TO FORD AND THEY WERE NOT HELPFUL. SHE WAS CITED IN THE ACCIDENT AND THERE ARE CLAIMS FOR INJURIES AND DAMAGES.*DT*JB*DT*JB*DT*JB*DT*DT - (RECALL RELATED INCIDENT) TS

THIS WAS RECALLED ALMOST 2 YEARS AGO AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE BY FORD! THE CAR MAINLY SITS IN FRONT OF MY HOUSE. I AM AFRAID TO USE IT. HOW CAN THEY NOT FIX A BRAKE RECALL (MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN) AND GET AWAY WITH IT? MOST RECENT INCIDENT WAS OCT 2020 BUT HAPPENED SEVERAL TIMES PRIOR.
MY HUSBAND WAS DRIVING AT ABOUT 35 MPH DOWN A TWO LANE ROAD IN THE RIGHT LANE AND HE WENT TO STOP AT A STOP LIGHT AND WHEN HE HIT THE BRAKE PETAL, IT VIBRATES 4 TIMES AND THEN THE PETAL WENT TO THE FLOOR AND THE BRAKES STOPPED WORKING AND HE COULD NOT SLOW DOWN OR STOP THE VEHICLE. SINCE THERE WAS A PEDESTRIAN TO HIS RIGHT ON THE SIDEWALK AND THE VEHICLE IN FRONT OF HIM WAS SMALLER THAN HIS CAR, HE CHOSE TO DRIVE IN THE MIDDLE THROUGH THE TWO LANES OF VEHICLES. HE ENDED UP HITTING 3 OTHER VEHICLES BEFORE OUR CAR STOPPED. AFTER HE GOT HOME, WE CHECKED TO SEE IF THERE WERE ANY RECALLS ON THE CAR SINCE WE WERE CONFUSED WHY THE BRAKES FAILED OUT OF NOWHERE SEEING AS WE HAD RECENTLY PUT BRAND NEW $80 BRAKES ON OUR CAR AND FOUND OUT THAT THERE HAD BEEN A RECALL ON THE ABS SYSTEM LAST JANUARY, BUT THERE IS NOT A REPLACEMENT PART YET AVAILABLE UNTIL NOVEMBER. I TRULY BELIEVE THAT THIS ACCIDENT WAS CAUSED DUE TO FAULTY PARTS THAT FORD MADE THIS VEHICLE WITH AND NOW MY CAR IS TOTALED AND I DID NOT HAVE COLLISION SO BECAUSE OF THE FAULTY ABS SYSTEM, I NOW HAVE NO CAR AND DAMAGED 3 OTHER PEOPLE'S CARS. THANK GOD THIS ACCIDENT WAS NOT FATAL AND NO ONE WAS INJURED TOO BADLY DUE TO THE UNSAFE ABS SYSTEM IN THE 2009 FORD FUSION.*DT*JB - (RECALL RELATED INCIDENT) TS
ABS SYSTEM UNRESPONSIVE,PARKING BRAKE WAS NEEDED JUST TO STOP CAR.
